{"id":8187,"date":"2015-10-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-10-12T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites-stage.familylife.com\/flministries\/ten-romantic-films-your-husband-wont-hate\/"},"modified":"2015-10-12T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-10-12T00:00:00","slug":"10-classic-romantic-films-your-husband-wont-hate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp-stage.familylife.com\/www\/articles\/topics\/marriage\/staying-married\/romance-and-sex\/10-classic-romantic-films-your-husband-wont-hate\/","title":{"rendered":"10 Classic Romantic Films Your Husband Won&#8217;t Hate"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\" fetchpriority=\"high\"><\/div><p>I suppose I\u2019m unusual among many men in that I enjoy watching romantic films with my wife.&nbsp;But I also love \u201cman movies\u201d\u2014thrillers, adventures, mysteries, war stories.&nbsp;I like action and explosions and intrigue and excitement.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some films that fall somewhere in the middle between chick flicks and man movies.&nbsp;In these movies you will find a strong theme of romance to please wives, and enough other elements to attract husbands.&nbsp;Hopefully you\u2019ll find some selections here to view as a couple.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve focused mostly on older films for two reasons. First, I\u2019ve found that many people don\u2019t watch movies made before 1980 or so, and as a result are missing out on most of the best films ever made.&nbsp;Second, older films (especially those made before 1960) are cleaner\u2014they aren\u2019t nearly as polluted by the sex, language, and violence so common in today\u2019s movies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:8px\"><em><strong>The African Queen<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Katherine Hepburn is a missionary thrown together with Humphrey Bogart, a rough riverboat captain, in a World War I adventure.&nbsp;This 1951 film will soon be released on DVD for the first time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:8px\"><em><strong>Casablanca<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A story about refugees stuck in Morocco during World War II, and the nightclub, Rick\u2019s, where everyone goes, and two lovers who meet again.&nbsp;An absolute classic with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergmann.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:8px\"><em><strong>Charade<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite mysteries, with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn trying to discover why her husband was killed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:8px\"><em><strong>It\u2019s a Wonderful Life<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>You might be surprised to find this on a list of romantic films, but one of the major themes of the film is the love story between Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed.&nbsp;It\u2019s so poignant, and so creative, that many people list this as their favorite romantic film ever.<br \/>\n<div class=\"fl-article-cta\"><div class=\"fl-article-cta-wrapper\"><a class='fl-article-cta-button' style='margin-top: 15px; visibility: visible; background-color: #f3bd48 !important;' target='_blank' href='https:\/\/wp-stage.familylife.com\/learn\/the-nearly-complete-guide-to-better-married-sex\/' data-color-override='false' data-hover-color-override='false' data-hover-text-color-override='#fff'><span>Can sex in Christian marriage be spectacular? See our online course!<i class='fa fas fa-long-arrow-right'><\/i><\/span> <\/a> <\/div> <\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:8px\"><em><strong>The Man From Snowy River<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A \u201ccoming of age\u201d story about a young man, Jim, who loses his father and must earn his way back to his life in the high country of Australia.&nbsp;Kirk Douglass plays two roles\u2014the rich rancher whose daughter falls for Jim, and the twin brother who has spent his life looking for gold.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:8px\"><em><strong>The Princess Bride<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an adventure, a romance, and a satiric look at fairy tales.&nbsp;Features a great cast with, among others, Mandy Patinkin, Cary Elwes, Wallace Shawn, Chris Sarandon, Christopher Guest, Robin Wright, Billy Crystal, and Andre the Giant!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:8px\"><em><strong>Roman Holiday<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In one of her first films, Audrey Hepburn is a princess who hates her life and escapes for one wonderful day in Rome with Gregory Peck, a reporter who recognizes her but doesn\u2019t let her know.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:8px\"><em><strong>Teacher\u2019s Pet<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Many people haven\u2019t heard of this 1958 romantic comedy.&nbsp;Clark Gable, in one of his final roles, plays a hard-nosed newspaper editor who hates journalism schools. Then he meets a journalism professor played by Doris Day.&nbsp;Gable poses as a student, and the drama begins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:8px\"><em><strong>What\u2019s Up, Doc?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the funniest movies I\u2019ve ever seen.&nbsp;This 1972 tribute to screwball comedies features a plot so screwball that I can\u2019t even summarize it.&nbsp;Stars Ryan O\u2019Neal and Barbra Streisand.<\/p>\n<p>And here are two bonus films &#8230; if your husband likes musicals, here are two classics:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:8px\"><em><strong>Seven Brides for Seven Brothers<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It begins when the oldest of seven brothers in the Oregon Territory rides into town determined to bring home a wife.&nbsp;This inspires his brothers to do the same.&nbsp;The barn-raising sequence is one of the best manly dance scenes you\u2019ll ever see.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:8px\"><em><strong>Singin\u2019 in the Rain<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Many critics consider this the best musical ever made.&nbsp;It\u2019s set in Hollywood in the late 1920s, when silent films gave way to \u201ctalkies.\u201d&nbsp;Starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O\u2019Connor, and Jean Hagen, this movie is funny, creative, and romantic.&nbsp;It\u2019s one of my favorite films of all time, and it contains my favorite sequence of all time:&nbsp;the \u201cSingin\u2019 in the Rain\u201d number with Gene Kelly.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><em>Copyright \u00a9 2010 by FamilyLife.&nbsp;
