She loved veggie pizza; I couldn\u2019t pick broccoli out of a lineup. Awkward, even for the server, who had to give us \u201ca few more minutes\u201d 17 times. Years later, we realized we\u2019d each experienced a silent \u201cuh-oh.\u201d It all worked out, thankfully\u2014these days we compromise with supreme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the early days of our marriage, we had more silent <em>uh-ohs<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul style=\"margin: 0 0 15px 1.5em\">\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 8px\">&#8220;Uh-oh. She doesn\u2019t think <em>Brooklyn 99<\/em> is funny.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 8px\">&#8220;Uh-oh. He snores.&#8221; I still maintain that I do NOT snore. (I totally do).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-stage.familylife.com\/www\/articles\/topics\/marriage\/staying-married\/communication\/emotional-intimacy-grasping-the-full-spectrum-of-feeling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">We\u2019re often desperate to forge a connection with our spouses<\/a>, scared to death our interests will diverge and our marriage will crumble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When monk\/wrestler Ignacio (Nacho Libre) meets the love of his life, he microwaves an instant connection by getting down to \u201cthe nitty-gritty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho is this Encarnaci\u00f3n?\u201d He asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She ticks off a list of favorite things (puppies, the color light tan, serving the Lord, and volleyball), to which Nacho exclaims, \u201cEverything you said are my favorite things, too!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well played, sir. To woo her, though, he believes he has to put on a show, burying his burning passion\u2014wrestling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We tend to think the deepest bonds between people are formed by shared interests, likes and dislikes. We worry if those passions change, we\u2019ll grow apart. As Christ followers, though, we have an unbreakable connection with our spouses: the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-spiritual-intimacy-god-at-the-center-of-marriage\" style=\"font-size: 30px;margin-bottom: 15px;line-height: 1.1em\">Spiritual intimacy: God at the center of marriage<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God is with His children. If you and your wife follow Jesus, the same Holy Spirit is with each of you (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ephesians+1%3A13&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ephesians 1:13<\/a>). God Himself has declared a husband and wife are \u201cone\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=matthew+19:4-6&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Matthew 19:4-6<\/a>), and the Holy Spirit is the crazy glue that sticks us together. Marriage, in fact, forms a triad relationship: you and your spouse connect with each other, individually with God, and together with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our relationship with Jesus, and the presence of the Holy Spirit with us, is the most significant part about us. It shapes everything. It lasts forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, spiritual intimacy forges the deepest, most significant bonds between wives and husbands, because our spiritual lives make up the core of who we are. Spiritual connections create stronger intimacy than shared vocations, hobbies, or senses of humor. Since our relationship with God can always grow, that means our marriages can, too. Unlimited growth potential, right here at our fingertips!<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-3-ways-to-grow-spiritual-intimacy-in-your-marriage\" style=\"font-size: 30px;margin-bottom: 15px;line-height: 1.1em\">3 ways to grow spiritual intimacy in your marriage<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your marriage is like ours, though, spiritual intimacy comes last on the shopping list. It\u2019s not something we\u2019re used to talking about. Plus, insecurities abound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve noticed when my wife asks basic questions about how I\u2019m doing with God, my defenses spring up like a gopher trap. If things between God and me haven\u2019t been good, I mentally accuse her of snooping\u2014<em>She<\/em><em>\u2019s only asking because she had to dust my Bible<\/em>. And nothing makes me sweat like her asking me to pray. <em>\u201cNow? Out loud? What if I pray something silly?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other times, I\u2019m feeling close to God and in a good place spiritually. But that spins other anxious wheels: <em>What if she isn\u2019t in such a good place. Will she feel judged? Am I just being cocky?<\/em> Or, <em>what if I share that all\u2019s well and then tomorrow things change?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s clear I\u2019m obsessed with controlling my wife\u2019s opinion of me. That obsession turns me into a performer, putting on an act to please the crowd. I deflect, pretend, or excuse, like a magician making her intimate question (presto!) disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Performance kills intimacy. When I put on an act, I lie. And if I can\u2019t be honest with my wife, our marriage can\u2019t grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can you relate? Here are three ways to create and strengthen the spiritual intimacy in your marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-1-get-real\" style=\"font-size: 24px;line-height: 28px;font-weight: 500;margin-bottom: 8px\">1. Get real.<\/h3>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are you able to be honest with God? To open up and talk to Him about what\u2019s really going on in your life? That&#8217;s the first obstacle to hurdle in your path to spiritual intimacy. Your spouse can be your greatest help, but do you feel safe communicating that to them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes we need a different form of communication to open up. A letter or text might be a better way to express difficult things. You can write it in an hour or over two weeks, look back over it to see if you\u2019re communicating clearly, and even ask a friend to give it a glance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might even \u201cprime the pump\u201d by expressing your fears and needs off the bat in a separate letter to lay the foundation for a helpful conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re still struggling, the way forward may be to <a href=\"https:\/\/wp-stage.familylife.com\/www\/articles\/topics\/marriage\/staying-married\/where-can-i-get-help-for-my-marriage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enlist a trusted friend, pastor, or counselor to help<\/a>. Tell them the struggle you\u2019re facing and ask for help to open up with God and with your spouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<div class=\"fl-article-cta\"><div class=\"fl-article-cta-wrapper\"><a class='fl-article-cta-button' style='margin-top: 15px; visibility: visible; background-color: #f3bd48 !important;' target='_blank' href='https:\/\/wp-stage.familylife.com\/www\/i-do-every-day\/' data-color-override='false' data-hover-color-override='false' data-hover-text-color-override='#fff'><span>365 devotions for your marriage on the days you feel like it (and ones you don\u2019t). <i class='fa fas '><\/i><\/span> <\/a> <\/div> <\/div><\/p>\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-listen-well\" style=\"font-size: 24px;line-height: 28px;font-weight: 500;margin-bottom: 8px\">2. Listen well.<\/h3>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes, when my wife shares how she\u2019s doing with God, I get into fix-it mode. Instead of listening and empathizing, I tell her how to solve her problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ugh. We create safe-sharing opportunities by committing to listening well without judgment or advice unless it\u2019s specifically requested. We can create that space by modeling that posture and politely asking for it. My wife reminds me of this by saying, \u201cBabe, can I process something with you?\u201d That language tips me off that it\u2019s not problem-solving time.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-3-connect-with-god-together\" style=\"font-size: 24px;line-height: 28px;font-weight: 500;margin-bottom: 8px\">3. Connect with God together.<\/h3>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you\u2019re ready to build intimacy with God and with your spouse, why not kill two birds with one stone and do it together by praying? Being honest with God and your spouse and asking Him to draw you closer together seems to me like pouring rocket fuel into your Honda\u2019s gas tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reading the Bible together can also be a great connector, but fair warning: For me, it was a bit of a learning curve. I began our marriage thinking I was supposed to lead my wife spiritually. That\u2019s true, but what does that really mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In year one, I thought it meant knowing the most and being the best. Instead of learning together, I was attempting to teach and impress. Needless to say, those early times reading the Bible together fell flat. Sara wanted a confidant, not a Bible study leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders in our lives aren\u2019t the ones who tell us all the answers or lord knowledge over us. They invest in us, care about us, and sacrifice for us. I usually have to take what I\u2019ve assumed about leading my wife and flip it on its head\u2014ask her advice, admit I don\u2019t know an answer, confess my shortcomings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s a crazy thought\u2014I should ask her what she desires of me in a leader! Only took me a shade under a decade to figure out.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-a-vision-of-flourishing\" style=\"font-size: 30px;margin-bottom: 15px;line-height: 1.1em\">A Vision of Flourishing<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prophet Ezekiel experienced some tough times. He saw the violent exile of the Israelites from the Promised Land because of their unfaithfulness. To encourage Ezekiel and His people, God shows him a beautiful vision in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ezekiel+47&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chapter 47<\/a>: a trickle of water that grows into a wide, tree-lined river. That vision of flourishing reveals God\u2019s plan for our relationship with Him, growing into eternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s God\u2019s dream for our marriage, too. As we knit our hearts to God more and more, we\u2019re drawn closer to Him and closer to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether we\u2019ve been married for a week or half a century, growth is possible. More intimacy awaits as we focus on our relationship with Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I know that in your marriage things might not be great right now\u2014you might be struggling, drifting apart. There\u2019s hope, though. Adversity has been the heat that forges intimacy for my wife and me. What if I pray something silly?<\\\/em><\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>Other times, I\\u2019m feeling close to God and in a good place spiritually. But that spins other anxious wheels: <em>What if she isn\\u2019t in such a good place. Will she feel judged? Am I just being cocky?<\\\/em> Or, <em>what if I share that all\\u2019s well and then tomorrow things change?<\\\/em><\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>It\\u2019s clear I\\u2019m obsessed with controlling my wife\\u2019s opinion of me. That obsession turns me into a performer, putting on an act to please the crowd. I deflect, pretend, or excuse, like a magician making her intimate question (presto!) disappear.<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>Performance kills intimacy. When I put on an act, I lie. And if I can\\u2019t be honest with my wife, our marriage can\\u2019t grow.<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>Can you relate? Here are three ways to create and strengthen the spiritual intimacy in your marriage.<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph -->\\n<h3 id=\\\"h-1-get-real\\\" style=\\\"font-size: 24px; line-height: 28px; font-weight: 500; margin-bottom: 8px;\\\">1. Get real.<\\\/h3>\\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>Are you able to be honest with God? To open up and talk to Him about what\\u2019s really going on in your life? That's the first obstacle to hurdle in your path to spiritual intimacy. Your spouse can be your greatest help, but do you feel safe communicating that to them?<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>Sometimes we need a different form of communication to open up. A letter or text might be a better way to express difficult things. You can write it in an hour or over two weeks, look back over it to see if you\\u2019re communicating clearly, and even ask a friend to give it a glance.<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>You might even \\u201cprime the pump\\u201d by expressing your fears and needs off the bat in a separate letter to lay the foundation for a helpful conversation.<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>If you\\u2019re still struggling, the way forward may be to <a href=\\\"https:\\\/\\\/www.familylife.com\\\/articles\\\/topics\\\/marriage\\\/staying-married\\\/where-can-i-get-help-for-my-marriage\\\/\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noreferrer noopener\\\">enlist a trusted friend, pastor, or counselor to help<\\\/a>. Listen well.<\\\/h3>\\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>Sometimes, when my wife shares how she\\u2019s doing with God, I get into fix-it mode. Instead of listening and empathizing, I tell her how to solve her problems.<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>Ugh. We create safe-sharing opportunities by committing to listening well without judgment or advice unless it\\u2019s specifically requested. We can create that space by modeling that posture and politely asking for it. My wife reminds me of this by saying, \\u201cBabe, can I process something with you?\\u201d That language tips me off that it\\u2019s not problem-solving time.<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph -->\\n<h3 id=\\\"h-3-connect-with-god-together\\\" style=\\\"font-size: 24px; line-height: 28px; font-weight: 500; margin-bottom: 8px;\\\">3. Connect with God together.<\\\/h3>\\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>Once you\\u2019re ready to build intimacy with God and with your spouse, why not kill two birds with one stone and do it together by praying? Being honest with God and your spouse and asking Him to draw you closer together seems to me like pouring rocket fuel into your Honda\\u2019s gas tank.<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>Reading the Bible together can also be a great connector, but fair warning: For me, it was a bit of a learning curve. I began our marriage thinking I was supposed to lead my wife spiritually. That\\u2019s true, but what does that really mean?<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>In year one, I thought it meant knowing the most and being the best. Instead of learning together, I was attempting to teach and impress. Needless to say, those early times reading the Bible together fell flat. Sara wanted a confidant, not a Bible study leader.<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>The leaders in our lives aren\\u2019t the ones who tell us all the answers or lord knowledge over us. They invest in us, care about us, and sacrifice for us. I usually have to take what I\\u2019ve assumed about leading my wife and flip it on its head\\u2014ask her advice, admit I don\\u2019t know an answer, confess my shortcomings.<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>Here\\u2019s a crazy thought\\u2014I should ask her what she desires of me in a leader! Only took me a shade under a decade to figure out.<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph -->\\n<h2 id=\\\"h-a-vision-of-flourishing\\\" style=\\\"font-size: 30px; margin-bottom: 15px; line-height: 1.1em;\\\">A Vision of Flourishing<\\\/h2>\\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>The prophet Ezekiel experienced some tough times. He saw the violent exile of the Israelites from the Promised Land because of their unfaithfulness. To encourage Ezekiel and His people, God shows him a beautiful vision in <a href=\\\"https:\\\/\\\/www.biblegateway.com\\\/passage\\\/?search=Ezekiel+47&amp;version=ESV\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noreferrer noopener\\\">chapter 47<\\\/a>: a trickle of water that grows into a wide, tree-lined river. That vision of flourishing reveals God\\u2019s plan for our relationship with Him, growing into eternity.<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>That\\u2019s God\\u2019s dream for our marriage, too. As we knit our hearts to God more and more, we\\u2019re drawn closer to Him and closer to each other.<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>Whether we\\u2019ve been married for a week or half a century, growth is possible. More intimacy awaits as we focus on our relationship with Jesus.<\\\/p>\\n<!-- \\\/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\\n<p>And I know that in your marriage things might not be great right now\\u2014you might be struggling, drifting apart. There\\u2019s hope, though. Adversity has been the heat that forges intimacy for my wife and me.
