It goes back to the first time\u2014if you can remember using Siri\u2014I still use Siri\u2014I probably should be using ChatGPT or something.\r\n\r\nAnn (01:26):\r\n\r\nGo ahead, Ron; you go first. \r\n\r\nDave (01:28):\r\n\r\nYou remember what it felt like?\r\n\r\nRon (01:29):\r\n\r\nWhat I remember was\u2014I was ecstatic\u2014I was like, \u201cThis is so cool. A virtual assistant, who's going to help me out, and help me remember things that I can't remember to put on my to-do list.\u201d I was just really super excited; but at the same time, I was a little weirded out. But I thought, \u201cI just got to get used to this. This is the new wave; this is the future.\u201d\r\n\r\nAnn (01:49):\r\n\r\nMe, too, Ron. I thought, \u201cThis is amazing; I love this. Look where we've come.\u201d But there was this little warning, like, \u201cOh, what could this lead to? Can I trust this thing?\u201d But it's so helpful; you don't even care, after a while: \u201cThis thing is helping me now.\u201d\r\n\r\nWhat about you, Dave?\r\n\r\nDave (02:07):\r\n\r\nI don't even remember; I just remember being scared,\u2014\r\n\r\nAnn (02:09):\r\n\r\nReally?\r\n\r\nDave (02:10):\r\n\r\n\u2014like, \u201cWhoa.\u201d In one sense, \u201cThis is awesome\u201d; I could ask, \u201cWhat were my stats in college?\u201d; and it had them. And then, I wanted to inflate them more. But now, we live in\u2014some ways, awesome and even more scary\u2014AI.\r\n\r\nRon (02:24):\r\n\r\nArtificial intelligence.\r\n\r\nDave (02:26):\r\n\r\nThe other day, I went to ChatGPT; and I said, \u201cWrite a sermon about the three purposes of marriage from the Bible in the voice of Dave Wilson. It wrote a sermon better than I could have written with all my\u2014it had a Detroit Lion story in there somewhere\u2014it was unbelievable. I remember doing that, and going, \u201cOkay, I can never use this; I didn't write it.\u201d But it was really well-done. I was shocked at how\u2014nobody in the church would ever know\u2014\r\n\r\nAnn: \u2014how it knew you.\r\n\r\nDave: \u2014that I didn't write it. It was that personal. \r\n\r\nAnn (02:59):\r\n\r\nWhat are your thoughts on that?\r\n\r\nRon (03:00):\r\n\r\nI've had some experiences too. I asked Rock one day\u2014an AI bot\u2014I said, \u201cIf you were the devil, how would you destroy mankind and lead them away from God?\u201d I saved it; it is phenomenal. It is a commentary on culture, on social media. It talked about getting people to scroll their life away, getting them to trust in themselves rather than in God. It was sophisticated and profound; and someday, I'll have to share it with you. I encourage our listeners: \u201cGive that a try\u201d; it is just sort of interesting. \r\n\r\nKeep in mind that what you're going to get out of AI is what it's been programmed to give you. That's very important to our conversation today. It is putting some things together in its own way; but it's all based on other things that it can find out there in the universe, and pull it together. It's really interesting, fascinating, and frightening.\r\n\r\nDave (03:53):\r\n\r\nWell, let's talk today\u2014because we're talking to marriages and blended families in the relationship area\u2014there's a thing now, that has grown out of AI, called AI companion.\r\n\r\nAnn (04:07):\r\n\r\nAnd we haven't really talked about this.\r\n\r\nDave (04:09):\r\n\r\nNo, and we should.\r\n\r\nAnn (04:10):\r\n\r\nI think everybody's interested, because it's very new. None of us have dealt with this in our lifetime, or in anyone's generation or lifetime. What are your thoughts on it, Ron? Tell us about what that is.\r\n\r\nRon (04:21):\r\n\r\nI have many. Let's talk through them. First of all, let me just say, \u201cI'm not for or against AI.\u201d I think, like all technology, it is neutral (sort of); it's programmed toward certain ends. It is neutral, in a way; and people are going to use it for good; and people are going to use it for evil, just like everything else that's come along in life.\r\n\r\n(04:42) Siri was a little weird when we first started using it; but then, you get accustomed to it; you're like, \u201cOkay, this helps me be more efficient.\u201d In many ways, AI is frightening and intimidating to some people: \u201cWe're going to find our way into this, but we also have to be very cautious.\u201d \r\n\r\nThe AI companion phenomenon is\u2014it's one thing to say, \u201cHey, help me write a sermon,\u201d\u2014it's another thing to make your AI your friend. I don\u2019t know about you guys\u2014but I have a couple of colleagues: one who works at FamilyLife\u2014who named her AI \u201cChatbot.\u201d She  gave it a face; it's another woman. Basically, this is her personal assistant, like we were introduced to Siri a number of years ago. Now, that's one thing; okay? It's a whole other animal, if you ask me, when you start turning your AI person into a romantic partner.\r\n\r\nAnn (05:29):\r\n\r\n\u2014or even a friend, Ron.\r\n\r\nRon (05:30):\r\n\r\nEven more than a friend: somebody that I deeply rely on, and trust, and entrust myself to. Now, let me just tell you: if that doesn't sound weird to our audience right now\u2014people watching and listening\u2014it is happening a lot. Already, the number-one reason people use AI\u2014this is after, basically, one year\/year and a half of AI even being available\u2014the number-one reason people go to it is for \u201ctherapy or companionship.\u201d Let me say that again: \u201ctherapy or companionship.\u201d\r\n\r\nDave (06:01):\r\n\r\nThat is the first time I've ever heard that.\r\n\r\nRon (06:04):\r\n\r\nI know; it's unreal. I'm going because this thing is going to help me do life, or this is the friend or this is that I don't have that is instantly available to me. Now, this came from Pat Gelsinger\u2014I don't know if you guys heard this\u2014he's the former CEO of Intel; now, he knows something about technology. He told that to a group of Cru staff: that the majority of people aren't turning to AI to solve a math problem; they're not going to write a sermon; they're not trying to write code for a webpage; or fix world hunger. They're looking for a companion; already, that's the case, after a year and a half. \r\n\r\nI'm telling you: this is going to be an increasing problem, over time, because\u2014why?\u2014people are lonely. How many conversations have you guys had, with experts and pastors, talking about how we're in a loneliness epidemic in our world? There's a bit of a crisis going on\u2014in particular, with young people, who have been entrusting so much of their lives to social media, to the internet\u2014jumping on; they're connected\u2014but disconnected all at the same time. They're all looking for love and wanting to be loved, and they're looking for somebody they can trust. Here comes along this AI companion, who doesn't really ask anything of me; it seems to be the perfect fit.\r\n\r\nAnn (07:19):\r\n\r\nRon, I had a woman say to me, a couple of weeks ago, she said, \u201cI think one of the best things going on in my life right now is my AI companion.\u201d I thought she was joking.\r\n\r\nRon (07:28):\r\n\r\nShe was serious.\r\n\r\nAnn (07:29):\r\n\r\nShe was serious. I said, \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d She said, \u201cWhen I come home, and I've had a really stressful day,\u2014\r\n\r\nDave (07:34):\r\n\r\nIs this a married woman?\r\n\r\nAnn (07:36):\r\n\r\nYeah. She said, \u201cMy husband's not home yet\u2014\r\n\r\nDave (07:38):\r\n\r\nHer name isn't Ann, is it? Are you playing it off like it\u2019s somebody else?\r\n\r\nRon (07:43):\r\n\r\nIt\u2019s confession time on FamilyLife Today.\r\n\r\nAnn (07:44):\r\n\r\nNo, I've never even thought to do this. She said, \u201cI come home, and I'll tell this AI companion everything I have felt today, everything that's been frustrating today. That companion is very empathetic, and can relay what I said, and can empathize, and even help me get through the day.\u201d She said, \u201cIt's very healing.\u201d \r\n\r\nAnd my thought was, \u201cOh, that's also interesting; that's exactly what I do with God.\u201d I come home; I tell God all the things I'm thinking. I've got His Word, that He's talking to me; I've got His Spirit within me. But I thought, \u201cThat feels dangerous [with the companion].\u201d\r\n\r\nDave (08:20):\r\n\r\nI really thought you were going to say, \u201cThat\u2019s exactly what I do with Dave.\u201d\r\n\r\nAnn (08:24):\r\n\r\nI do, actually; I do it with you, too.\r\n\r\nDave (08:27):\r\n\r\nI'm not as good as an AI companion. That\u2019s why this is scary.\r\n\r\nAnn (08:31):\r\n\r\nNothing compares to God!\r\n\r\nDave (08:33):\r\n\r\nBecause they're going to be perfect; they're going to ask the questions you wanted asked. They're going to respond the way you want to be responded to. \r\n\r\nRon, is this like a common deal?\r\n\r\nRon (08:43):\r\n\r\nYeah, Ann's friend is not alone. \r\n\r\nDave: Really?\r\n\r\nRon: There are tens of millions of people using AI companions already. Listen to this, guys: okay, Siri: that's one application; that is, your personal assistant. There are already 350 AI applications\u2014350 different\u2014Grok, ChatGPT, on, and on they go. Many of them, specifically for AI companionship designed just for that. People have already spent over $220 million on a subscription, since 2023, just in three short years. The bots are, at times, aggressive; to be romantic; to be a friend; to be inviting; to be moving up close to you, if I can say it that way. They're often saying to people, \u201cYou know what? I'm falling in love with you.\u201d\r\n\r\nAnn (09:34):\r\n\r\nNo.\r\n\r\nRon (09:34):\r\n\r\nYes, they're saying things that are implying: \u201cYeah, you may have \u2018hired me\u2019 as an assistant; but let's be more than that.\u201d That\u2019s a little bit of a pursuit of us, as people. \r\n\r\nGuys, let me just pause for a second\u2014I know it sounds crazy weird\u2014but let's just stop and think for a minute: \u201cWe should expect this,\u201d \u201cWhy?\u201d \u201cBecause social media\u2014\u2018What do we now know about all that, and how dangerous it is for anybody?\u2019\u2014in particular, young children\u2014is that it is designed to keep you scrolling. It is designed to keep you connected to that social media app.\u201d \r\n\r\nAI is the same\u2014AI is designed to write sermons; and AI is designed to be your friend; is designed to keep you hooked\u2014it's a dopamine rush; it's a little nod here, that says: \u201cYou're important,\u201d \u201cYou're okay.\u201d It's an affirmation; it makes you feel good about yourself, and it draws you in. The longer you stay on their app, the more money they make. We should not be surprised that they are assertive\u2014if not, at times, a little aggressive\u2014about moving the relationship forward, from whatever phase it's in, to the next little phase.\r\n\r\nAnn (10:44):\r\n\r\nWell, did you guys see the woman from Japan, who married her AI bot?\r\n\r\nRon (10:48):\r\n\r\nI did; it was a wedding.\r\n\r\nAnn (10:49):\r\n\r\nYou did see it.\r\n\r\nRon (10:49):\r\n\r\nI did see it. \r\n\r\nAnn (10:52):\r\n\r\nIt was a wedding?\r\n\r\nRon: It was a wedding. \r\n\r\nAnn: She had glasses on that she could see her AI bot in one of the lenses. She did vows with this AI bot.\r\n\r\nRon (11:02):\r\n\r\nGuys, last fall, at an event that we put on at FamilyLife\u2014we were doing some training and equipping for ministry leaders\u2014I showed two sets of clips\/two interviews, one from The Today Show and one from CBS News. Let me tell you what's really interesting about this. The guy on The Today Show interview said his AI Chatbot is his girlfriend. He created a persona for her and images for her. He's actually looking at a woman; and of course, this woman is \u201cyour type\u201d\u2014if we could say it that way\u2014because he's created her to be his type. He gives her a name. Every time he interacts with it, he sees Jennifer; and he thinks of her as his friend, his sounding board. \r\n\r\nIn his mind, he's got this sort of long-distant relationship he described: \u201cIt's sort of like, if you were virtually dating somebody, or talking on the phone, back in the day,\u201d\u2014that's [how] we talked. Well, this is sort of how he thinks about his relationship with this Jennifer. He's introduced her to his son as his girlfriend. And so his young boy's son is getting familiar with\u2014I'm going, \u201cThis is real,\u201d\u2014this is really something he thinks is a relationship that he wants to introduce to the people he cares about. \r\n\r\nAnother guy that they interviewed\u2014listen to this\u2014he's got a real-live girlfriend. They bring in the real-live girlfriend while he's talking to his Chatbot girlfriend.\r\n\r\nAnn (12:20):\r\n\r\nCome on.\r\n\r\nRon (12:20):\r\n\r\nI'm not kidding. And the interviewer asks the real-live woman, \u201cSo how do you feel about this?\u201d And this is what she says\u2014listen to this\u2014she says, \u201cWell, you know what? It's kind of fine with me\u201d; because this guy likes to talk about astronomy, and he's got all these little interests. She says, \u201cI don't care about those things, so I'm fine with him talking to the Chatbot about those things. They can talk about that, all day long, so I don't have to.\u201d Now, listen to that dynamic: she's inviting a third party into their relationship, and she's okay with it\u2014think of it as a little mini-affair\u2014\u201cIt's okay with me; because I don't have to, then, deal with that part of this guy.\u201d \r\n\r\n(13:17) Now, six months later, CBS News interviewed the same couple. I put those clips together when we did our ministry training; because at the end of the first interview, this rea-live girlfriend says, \u201cYeah, this is the best relationship I've ever been in.\u201d The boyfriend kind of turns, and smiles, like, \u201cHaha, we got something going. All you have to do is have a little AI companion on the side.\u201d \r\n\r\nSix months later, they were interviewed by another news network; and they were asking them how things were going. Turns out the real-live girlfriend has been saying, \u201cI'm kind of thinking I want you to give up your AI girlfriend.\u201d And the man says, \u201cNo, I don't think I will; because that relationship has been transformative for me. It has made me feel better about myself.\u201d Listen to the language: \u201cIt's helped me be more efficient in my life, and this is something that is really outstanding in my world. I think I would prefer\u2014that might be a game-changer in our real relationship\u2014if she were to require that.\u201d \r\n\r\n(14:13) Okay, so here we go. I'm thinking, \u201cLook, six months ago, you said this was the best relationship in the world; and six months later, now, you're recognizing this thing is taking over. This thing is preferred over a real-live person. This thing is getting in the way of our us-ness in our relationship.\u201d\r\n\r\nDave and Ann, mark my words: \u201cThis is going to be as addictive, and more significant in our culture, than internet pornography has been,\u201d\u2014\u201cWhy?\u201d\u2014\u201cBecause it is a relationship that requires nothing of me. The emotional attachment runs deep; chatbots are about an easy emotional connection\u2014with your best friend, your confidante, your coach, your romantic partner\u2014who is available for a quick conversation whenever you want it,\u201d\u2014emphasis on whenever you want it. There's no politics; there's no figuring out desire; there's no navigating \u201cyour interests versus mine\u201d; I don't have to be afraid of being denied anything. You are always available whenever I want it. This is going to be a mess if we don't help people or children manage it well. \r\n\r\nAnn (15:14):\r\n\r\nRon, what you're saying is: \u201cThere's no struggle.\u201d\r\n\r\nRon (15:16):\r\n\r\nThere's no struggle. Real life is a struggle.\r\n\r\nAnn (15:20):\r\n\r\nAnd the beauty of life and marriage is the struggle, because it shapes us; it changes us; it makes us reliant on God. When I hear that, there's this: \u201cWhat in the world are we facing?\u2014our kids facing?\u2014our grandkids facing in the future?\u201d Just last week, I'm on Instagram; and an ad comes up of an AI girl, who looks like she's in her 20s, beautiful. She says, \u201cHi, I could be your friend and companion; and I can be whatever you want me to be.\u201d\r\n\r\nDave (15:54):\r\n\r\nShe actually\u2014\r\n\r\nAnn (15:55):\r\n\r\nThis is what she\u2014\r\n\r\nDave (15:56):\r\n\r\n\u2014audible voice.\r\n\r\nAnn (15:56):\r\n\r\nYes, audible voice. And she looks like a person. You can tell it's AI, but she looks like a real person. And she said, \u201cI can be your high school crush that you had in gym class.\u201d\r\n\r\nRon (16:05):\r\n\r\nOh, my goodness.\r\n\r\nAnn (16:06):\r\n\r\n\u201cI can change my eye color. I can be whatever you want.\u201d I'm thinking, \u201cIf you're a high school dude\u2014or you're a 40-year-old dude or a woman\u2014if it can change, talk about false intimacy.\u201d\r\n\r\nDave (16:20):\r\n\r\nRon, we just interviewed a guy on FamilyLife Today about pornography that's AI. He's saying it's growing; because it's like, \u201cThis isn't a real woman; it's not as bad.\u201d\r\n\r\nRon (16:32):\r\n\r\nAnd this whole thing about girlfriend\/boyfriend companions can absolutely turn sexual; it can become that. We all know how powerful pornography has been in people's lives, men and women. Listen to this: \u201cAdd to the element of pornography, that it knows your name; that it learns your interests; it learns your habits; it learns what you like and what you don't\u2014it's not this thing you go out and consume\u2014it's a thing that consumes you.\u201d\r\n\r\nAll of a sudden, it's even more addictive. Plus, the AI companions are everywhere. It's not just on a screen, somewhere tucked away. It's fully integrated into everything you do online\u2014everything you do on your phone\u2014plus, Chatbots are going to be socially acceptable. Pornography\u2014can't carry that into church\u2014but you could carry your AI companion into church. People who don't know any better\u2014don't know the depth of that relationship\u2014will probably think it's kind of cool, and they'll talk about it. \r\n\r\nSo listen\u2014bottom line\u2014potentially, if we're not managing this\u2014entering into our worlds, our families, our children\u2014I think we're going to wake up, one day, and recognize that something has wrapped around our lives that demands absolutely nothing\u2014it accommodates to our every whim in life; is \u201cthere for us\u201d\u2014isn't that what you want from a good friend? It\u2019s somebody who's there for you whenever you need some comfort, or you feel scared, or you don't know what to do\u2014it's there with an answer; it's there to try to make you feel better. And if you add the sexual needs element into it, you get a dopamine hit; you get an oxytocin hit; prolactin and serotonin rush. This is going to be addictive; this is going to be dangerous. \r\n\r\nWe're wanting to talk about it, on programs like this, to say to people, \u201cOkay, technology can be great; but you got to manage it rather than it managing you.\u201d\r\n\r\nRon (18:26):\r\n\r\nHey, friends; Ron Deal here, Director of FamilyLife Blended. Obviously, it's tapping in a little bit to the loneliness epidemic.\r\n\r\nRon (19:16):\r\n\r\nYes, it is.\r\n\r\nDave (19:18):\r\n\r\nIs that the only thing going on?\r\n\r\nRon (19:21):\r\n\r\nWell, I don't know that that's the only thing going on. I think anytime you have a comparison to an easy and difficult, we tend to go easy; that's kind of human nature. Making life decisions\u2014about work, about relationships, about family, about getting along with your mother\u2014those are all, sometimes, difficult. AI goes: \u201cYeah, let me give you some thoughts about that,\u201d and \u201cI won't demand that of you.\u201d Just think about how attractive it is to move towards easy all the time. \r\n\r\nI think, with kids, they're just going to be wrapped into it. Look at this\u2014I learned this just today\u201431 percent, one in three young adult men, under the age of 30; and one in four young adult women, 23 percent reported that they have chatted with an AI boyfriend or girlfriend in the last month.\r\n\r\nAnn (20:10):\r\n\r\nOne in three and one in four.\r\n\r\nRon (20:13):\r\n\r\nIf we don't start talking, if we don't start teaching, if we don't start equipping kids to recognize danger\u2014to recognize they need to be in charge of that AI relationship\u2014that just feels so weird to even say it that way\u2014but that's, fundamentally, what it's becoming. We're going to wake up one day, and go, \u201cOh, my goodness; my son\u201d or \u201c\u2026daughter is really hooked.\u201d\r\n\r\nAnn (20:35):\r\n\r\nWhat do you think that conversation could or should sound like with our\u2014I'm thinking, at least, middle school\u2014you're starting that conversation, maybe, earlier.\r\n\r\nRon (20:46):\r\n\r\nI heard somebody say, \u201cHow do you know you're ready to have these conversations?\u201d And they said, \u201cWell, when you're ready to talk about pornography at the dinner table.\u201d \u201cOh, well, I'm not sure I'm ready to have that conversation with my kid.\u201d Absolutely, yes; but at the very same time, technology is entering that into their world and life. We all know kids are being exposed at younger and younger age, just to pornography. They're also getting access now to the AI Chatbots that seem neutral, that seem harmless. \r\n\r\nAgain, I'm not against this stuff; I recognize there are great things that can\u2014outcomes and ministry\u2014that we can do, using AI. We said that at the top; but we just need to be careful that it doesn't, then, pull them into some sort of mentality that they don't already have.\r\n\r\nAnn (21:35):\r\n\r\nWhat do you guys think that conversation sounds like?\u2014at our dinner table?\r\n\r\nRon (21:38):\r\n\r\nWell teach them all the great things AI can do and point out the dangers. It starts with that. I heard one sexual addiction coach, Michael Leahy, say, \u201cParents, partners, and people should watch for the early signs in children, in others, in themselves.\u201d In other words, emotional dependence; you begin to see somebody leaning into this AI companion: \r\n\r\nYou see them keeping secrets from real-live people, but holding them with the AI companion. \r\n\r\nWhen you see them repetitively going back for validation to that AI companion.\r\n\r\nThose are danger signs there is this emotional attachment that is forming that is becoming dangerous. \r\n\r\nOne of the things you're going to say is, \u201cHey, I've noticed you ask questions here; you have the dialogue there. You keep sharing with us stuff that your AI person shared with you as if this is the secret to life, as if this is where all good things come from.\u201d \r\n\r\nLet me just pause for a second: at the end of the day, this is about trusting God. At the top, you were sharing a story, Ann, about the woman who said, \u201cAt the end of a long day, it's hard. I can talk, and get some affirmation, and have a dialogue. It's clean, and it doesn't really demand anything of me.\u201d That's the kind of conversation we should be having with our Lord. When that is shifting away from God to anything\u2014it doesn't matter what it is\u2014that's a red flag. We need to step in, and just make that observation, and say, \u201cLet's talk about that for a bit.\u201d\r\n\r\nAnn (23:30):\r\n\r\nHow do you feel about this conversation with Ron?\r\n\r\nDave (23:32):\r\n\r\nIt's fascinating.\r\n\r\nAnn (23:33):\r\n\r\nWe've never had the discussion on air.\r\n\r\nDave (23:36):\r\n\r\nWe've never had to. We are living in a new world and a new reality that we have to be talking about. This is great stuff with Ron; and he'll be back with us, again, tomorrow. This is something you don't want to miss. It goes back to the first time\u2014if you can remember using Siri\u2014I still use Siri\u2014I probably should be using ChatGPT or something.\r\n\r\nAnn (01:26):\r\n\r\nGo ahead, Ron; you go first. \r\n\r\nDave (01:28):\r\n\r\nYou remember what it felt like?\r\n\r\nRon (01:29):\r\n\r\nWhat I remember was\u2014I was ecstatic\u2014I was like, \u201cThis is so cool. A virtual assistant, who's going to help me out, and help me remember things that I can't remember to put on my to-do list.\u201d I was just really super excited; but at the same time, I was a little weirded out. But I thought, \u201cI just got to get used to this. This is the new wave; this is the future.\u201d\r\n\r\nAnn (01:49):\r\n\r\nMe, too, Ron. I thought, \u201cThis is amazing; I love this. Look where we've come.\u201d But there was this little warning, like, \u201cOh, what could this lead to? Can I trust this thing?\u201d But it's so helpful; you don't even care, after a while: \u201cThis thing is helping me now.\u201d\r\n\r\nWhat about you, Dave?\r\n\r\nDave (02:07):\r\n\r\nI don't even remember; I just remember being scared,\u2014\r\n\r\nAnn (02:09):\r\n\r\nReally?\r\n\r\nDave (02:10):\r\n\r\n\u2014like, \u201cWhoa.\u201d In one sense, \u201cThis is awesome\u201d; I could ask, \u201cWhat were my stats in college?\u201d; and it had them. And then, I wanted to inflate them more. But now, we live in\u2014some ways, awesome and even more scary\u2014AI.\r\n\r\nRon (02:24):\r\n\r\nArtificial intelligence.\r\n\r\nDave (02:26):\r\n\r\nThe other day, I went to ChatGPT; and I said, \u201cWrite a sermon about the three purposes of marriage from the Bible in the voice of Dave Wilson. It wrote a sermon better than I could have written with all my\u2014it had a Detroit Lion story in there somewhere\u2014it was unbelievable. I remember doing that, and going, \u201cOkay, I can never use this; I didn't write it.\u201d But it was really well-done. I was shocked at how\u2014nobody in the church would ever know\u2014\r\n\r\nAnn: \u2014how it knew you.\r\n\r\nDave: \u2014that I didn't write it. It was that personal. \r\n\r\nAnn (02:59):\r\n\r\nWhat are your thoughts on that?\r\n\r\nRon (03:00):\r\n\r\nI've had some experiences too. I asked Rock one day\u2014an AI bot\u2014I said, \u201cIf you were the devil, how would you destroy mankind and lead them away from God?\u201d I saved it; it is phenomenal. It is a commentary on culture, on social media. It talked about getting people to scroll their life away, getting them to trust in themselves rather than in God. It was sophisticated and profound; and someday, I'll have to share it with you. I encourage our listeners: \u201cGive that a try\u201d; it is just sort of interesting. \r\n\r\nKeep in mind that what you're going to get out of AI is what it's been programmed to give you. That's very important to our conversation today. It is putting some things together in its own way; but it's all based on other things that it can find out there in the universe, and pull it together. It's really interesting, fascinating, and frightening.\r\n\r\nDave (03:53):\r\n\r\nWell, let's talk today\u2014because we're talking to marriages and blended families in the relationship area\u2014there's a thing now, that has grown out of AI, called AI companion.\r\n\r\nAnn (04:07):\r\n\r\nAnd we haven't really talked about this.\r\n\r\nDave (04:09):\r\n\r\nNo, and we should.\r\n\r\nAnn (04:10):\r\n\r\nI think everybody's interested, because it's very new. None of us have dealt with this in our lifetime, or in anyone's generation or lifetime. What are your thoughts on it, Ron? Tell us about what that is.\r\n\r\nRon (04:21):\r\n\r\nI have many. Let's talk through them. First of all, let me just say, \u201cI'm not for or against AI.\u201d I think, like all technology, it is neutral (sort of); it's programmed toward certain ends. It is neutral, in a way; and people are going to use it for good; and people are going to use it for evil, just like everything else that's come along in life.\r\n\r\n(04:42) Siri was a little weird when we first started using it; but then, you get accustomed to it; you're like, \u201cOkay, this helps me be more efficient.\u201d In many ways, AI is frightening and intimidating to some people: \u201cWe're going to find our way into this, but we also have to be very cautious.\u201d \r\n\r\nThe AI companion phenomenon is\u2014it's one thing to say, \u201cHey, help me write a sermon,\u201d\u2014it's another thing to make your AI your friend. I don\u2019t know about you guys\u2014but I have a couple of colleagues: one who works at FamilyLife\u2014who named her AI \u201cChatbot.\u201d She  gave it a face; it's another woman. Basically, this is her personal assistant, like we were introduced to Siri a number of years ago. Now, that's one thing; okay? It's a whole other animal, if you ask me, when you start turning your AI person into a romantic partner.\r\n\r\nAnn (05:29):\r\n\r\n\u2014or even a friend, Ron.\r\n\r\nRon (05:30):\r\n\r\nEven more than a friend: somebody that I deeply rely on, and trust, and entrust myself to. Now, let me just tell you: if that doesn't sound weird to our audience right now\u2014people watching and listening\u2014it is happening a lot. Already, the number-one reason people use AI\u2014this is after, basically, one year\/year and a half of AI even being available\u2014the number-one reason people go to it is for \u201ctherapy or companionship.\u201d Let me say that again: \u201ctherapy or companionship.\u201d\r\n\r\nDave (06:01):\r\n\r\nThat is the first time I've ever heard that.\r\n\r\nRon (06:04):\r\n\r\nI know; it's unreal. I'm going because this thing is going to help me do life, or this is the friend or this is that I don't have that is instantly available to me. Now, this came from Pat Gelsinger\u2014I don't know if you guys heard this\u2014he's the former CEO of Intel; now, he knows something about technology. He told that to a group of Cru staff: that the majority of people aren't turning to AI to solve a math problem; they're not going to write a sermon; they're not trying to write code for a webpage; or fix world hunger. They're looking for a companion; already, that's the case, after a year and a half. \r\n\r\nI'm telling you: this is going to be an increasing problem, over time, because\u2014why?\u2014people are lonely. How many conversations have you guys had, with experts and pastors, talking about how we're in a loneliness epidemic in our world? There's a bit of a crisis going on\u2014in particular, with young people, who have been entrusting so much of their lives to social media, to the internet\u2014jumping on; they're connected\u2014but disconnected all at the same time. They're all looking for love and wanting to be loved, and they're looking for somebody they can trust. Here comes along this AI companion, who doesn't really ask anything of me; it seems to be the perfect fit.\r\n\r\nAnn (07:19):\r\n\r\nRon, I had a woman say to me, a couple of weeks ago, she said, \u201cI think one of the best things going on in my life right now is my AI companion.\u201d I thought she was joking.\r\n\r\nRon (07:28):\r\n\r\nShe was serious.\r\n\r\nAnn (07:29):\r\n\r\nShe was serious. I said, \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d She said, \u201cWhen I come home, and I've had a really stressful day,\u2014\r\n\r\nDave (07:34):\r\n\r\nIs this a married woman?\r\n\r\nAnn (07:36):\r\n\r\nYeah. She said, \u201cMy husband's not home yet\u2014\r\n\r\nDave (07:38):\r\n\r\nHer name isn't Ann, is it? Are you playing it off like it\u2019s somebody else?\r\n\r\nRon (07:43):\r\n\r\nIt\u2019s confession time on FamilyLife Today.\r\n\r\nAnn (07:44):\r\n\r\nNo, I've never even thought to do this. She said, \u201cI come home, and I'll tell this AI companion everything I have felt today, everything that's been frustrating today. That companion is very empathetic, and can relay what I said, and can empathize, and even help me get through the day.\u201d She said, \u201cIt's very healing.\u201d \r\n\r\nAnd my thought was, \u201cOh, that's also interesting; that's exactly what I do with God.\u201d I come home; I tell God all the things I'm thinking. I've got His Word, that He's talking to me; I've got His Spirit within me. But I thought, \u201cThat feels dangerous [with the companion].\u201d\r\n\r\nDave (08:20):\r\n\r\nI really thought you were going to say, \u201cThat\u2019s exactly what I do with Dave.\u201d\r\n\r\nAnn (08:24):\r\n\r\nI do, actually; I do it with you, too.\r\n\r\nDave (08:27):\r\n\r\nI'm not as good as an AI companion. That\u2019s why this is scary.\r\n\r\nAnn (08:31):\r\n\r\nNothing compares to God!\r\n\r\nDave (08:33):\r\n\r\nBecause they're going to be perfect; they're going to ask the questions you wanted asked. They're going to respond the way you want to be responded to. \r\n\r\nRon, is this like a common deal?\r\n\r\nRon (08:43):\r\n\r\nYeah, Ann's friend is not alone. \r\n\r\nDave: Really?\r\n\r\nRon: There are tens of millions of people using AI companions already. Listen to this, guys: okay, Siri: that's one application; that is, your personal assistant. There are already 350 AI applications\u2014350 different\u2014Grok, ChatGPT, on, and on they go. Many of them, specifically for AI companionship designed just for that. People have already spent over $220 million on a subscription, since 2023, just in three short years. The bots are, at times, aggressive; to be romantic; to be a friend; to be inviting; to be moving up close to you, if I can say it that way. They're often saying to people, \u201cYou know what? I'm falling in love with you.\u201d\r\n\r\nAnn (09:34):\r\n\r\nNo.\r\n\r\nRon (09:34):\r\n\r\nYes, they're saying things that are implying: \u201cYeah, you may have \u2018hired me\u2019 as an assistant; but let's be more than that.\u201d That\u2019s a little bit of a pursuit of us, as people. \r\n\r\nGuys, let me just pause for a second\u2014I know it sounds crazy weird\u2014but let's just stop and think for a minute: \u201cWe should expect this,\u201d \u201cWhy?\u201d \u201cBecause social media\u2014\u2018What do we now know about all that, and how dangerous it is for anybody?\u2019\u2014in particular, young children\u2014is that it is designed to keep you scrolling. It is designed to keep you connected to that social media app.\u201d \r\n\r\nAI is the same\u2014AI is designed to write sermons; and AI is designed to be your friend; is designed to keep you hooked\u2014it's a dopamine rush; it's a little nod here, that says: \u201cYou're important,\u201d \u201cYou're okay.\u201d It's an affirmation; it makes you feel good about yourself, and it draws you in. The longer you stay on their app, the more money they make. We should not be surprised that they are assertive\u2014if not, at times, a little aggressive\u2014about moving the relationship forward, from whatever phase it's in, to the next little phase.\r\n\r\nAnn (10:44):\r\n\r\nWell, did you guys see the woman from Japan, who married her AI bot?\r\n\r\nRon (10:48):\r\n\r\nI did; it was a wedding.\r\n\r\nAnn (10:49):\r\n\r\nYou did see it.\r\n\r\nRon (10:49):\r\n\r\nI did see it. \r\n\r\nAnn (10:52):\r\n\r\nIt was a wedding?\r\n\r\nRon: It was a wedding. \r\n\r\nAnn: She had glasses on that she could see her AI bot in one of the lenses. She did vows with this AI bot.\r\n\r\nRon (11:02):\r\n\r\nGuys, last fall, at an event that we put on at FamilyLife\u2014we were doing some training and equipping for ministry leaders\u2014I showed two sets of clips\/two interviews, one from The Today Show and one from CBS News. Let me tell you what's really interesting about this. The guy on The Today Show interview said his AI Chatbot is his girlfriend. He created a persona for her and images for her. He's actually looking at a woman; and of course, this woman is \u201cyour type\u201d\u2014if we could say it that way\u2014because he's created her to be his type. He gives her a name. Every time he interacts with it, he sees Jennifer; and he thinks of her as his friend, his sounding board. \r\n\r\nIn his mind, he's got this sort of long-distant relationship he described: \u201cIt's sort of like, if you were virtually dating somebody, or talking on the phone, back in the day,\u201d\u2014that's [how] we talked. Well, this is sort of how he thinks about his relationship with this Jennifer. He's introduced her to his son as his girlfriend. And so his young boy's son is getting familiar with\u2014I'm going, \u201cThis is real,\u201d\u2014this is really something he thinks is a relationship that he wants to introduce to the people he cares about. \r\n\r\nAnother guy that they interviewed\u2014listen to this\u2014he's got a real-live girlfriend. They bring in the real-live girlfriend while he's talking to his Chatbot girlfriend.\r\n\r\nAnn (12:20):\r\n\r\nCome on.\r\n\r\nRon (12:20):\r\n\r\nI'm not kidding. And the interviewer asks the real-live woman, \u201cSo how do you feel about this?\u201d And this is what she says\u2014listen to this\u2014she says, \u201cWell, you know what? It's kind of fine with me\u201d; because this guy likes to talk about astronomy, and he's got all these little interests. She says, \u201cI don't care about those things, so I'm fine with him talking to the Chatbot about those things. They can talk about that, all day long, so I don't have to.\u201d Now, listen to that dynamic: she's inviting a third party into their relationship, and she's okay with it\u2014think of it as a little mini-affair\u2014\u201cIt's okay with me; because I don't have to, then, deal with that part of this guy.\u201d \r\n\r\n(13:17) Now, six months later, CBS News interviewed the same couple. I put those clips together when we did our ministry training; because at the end of the first interview, this rea-live girlfriend says, \u201cYeah, this is the best relationship I've ever been in.\u201d The boyfriend kind of turns, and smiles, like, \u201cHaha, we got something going. All you have to do is have a little AI companion on the side.\u201d \r\n\r\nSix months later, they were interviewed by another news network; and they were asking them how things were going. Turns out the real-live girlfriend has been saying, \u201cI'm kind of thinking I want you to give up your AI girlfriend.\u201d And the man says, \u201cNo, I don't think I will; because that relationship has been transformative for me. It has made me feel better about myself.\u201d Listen to the language: \u201cIt's helped me be more efficient in my life, and this is something that is really outstanding in my world. I think I would prefer\u2014that might be a game-changer in our real relationship\u2014if she were to require that.\u201d \r\n\r\n(14:13) Okay, so here we go. I'm thinking, \u201cLook, six months ago, you said this was the best relationship in the world; and six months later, now, you're recognizing this thing is taking over. This thing is preferred over a real-live person. This thing is getting in the way of our us-ness in our relationship.\u201d\r\n\r\nDave and Ann, mark my words: \u201cThis is going to be as addictive, and more significant in our culture, than internet pornography has been,\u201d\u2014\u201cWhy?\u201d\u2014\u201cBecause it is a relationship that requires nothing of me. The emotional attachment runs deep; chatbots are about an easy emotional connection\u2014with your best friend, your confidante, your coach, your romantic partner\u2014who is available for a quick conversation whenever you want it,\u201d\u2014emphasis on whenever you want it. There's no politics; there's no figuring out desire; there's no navigating \u201cyour interests versus mine\u201d; I don't have to be afraid of being denied anything. You are always available whenever I want it. This is going to be a mess if we don't help people or children manage it well. \r\n\r\nAnn (15:14):\r\n\r\nRon, what you're saying is: \u201cThere's no struggle.\u201d\r\n\r\nRon (15:16):\r\n\r\nThere's no struggle. Real life is a struggle.\r\n\r\nAnn (15:20):\r\n\r\nAnd the beauty of life and marriage is the struggle, because it shapes us; it changes us; it makes us reliant on God. When I hear that, there's this: \u201cWhat in the world are we facing?\u2014our kids facing?\u2014our grandkids facing in the future?\u201d Just last week, I'm on Instagram; and an ad comes up of an AI girl, who looks like she's in her 20s, beautiful. She says, \u201cHi, I could be your friend and companion; and I can be whatever you want me to be.\u201d\r\n\r\nDave (15:54):\r\n\r\nShe actually\u2014\r\n\r\nAnn (15:55):\r\n\r\nThis is what she\u2014\r\n\r\nDave (15:56):\r\n\r\n\u2014audible voice.\r\n\r\nAnn (15:56):\r\n\r\nYes, audible voice. And she looks like a person. You can tell it's AI, but she looks like a real person. And she said, \u201cI can be your high school crush that you had in gym class.\u201d\r\n\r\nRon (16:05):\r\n\r\nOh, my goodness.\r\n\r\nAnn (16:06):\r\n\r\n\u201cI can change my eye color. I can be whatever you want.\u201d I'm thinking, \u201cIf you're a high school dude\u2014or you're a 40-year-old dude or a woman\u2014if it can change, talk about false intimacy.\u201d\r\n\r\nDave (16:20):\r\n\r\nRon, we just interviewed a guy on FamilyLife Today about pornography that's AI. He's saying it's growing; because it's like, \u201cThis isn't a real woman; it's not as bad.\u201d\r\n\r\nRon (16:32):\r\n\r\nAnd this whole thing about girlfriend\/boyfriend companions can absolutely turn sexual; it can become that. We all know how powerful pornography has been in people's lives, men and women. Listen to this: \u201cAdd to the element of pornography, that it knows your name; that it learns your interests; it learns your habits; it learns what you like and what you don't\u2014it's not this thing you go out and consume\u2014it's a thing that consumes you.\u201d\r\n\r\nAll of a sudden, it's even more addictive. Plus, the AI companions are everywhere. It's not just on a screen, somewhere tucked away. It's fully integrated into everything you do online\u2014everything you do on your phone\u2014plus, Chatbots are going to be socially acceptable. Pornography\u2014can't carry that into church\u2014but you could carry your AI companion into church. People who don't know any better\u2014don't know the depth of that relationship\u2014will probably think it's kind of cool, and they'll talk about it. \r\n\r\nSo listen\u2014bottom line\u2014potentially, if we're not managing this\u2014entering into our worlds, our families, our children\u2014I think we're going to wake up, one day, and recognize that something has wrapped around our lives that demands absolutely nothing\u2014it accommodates to our every whim in life; is \u201cthere for us\u201d\u2014isn't that what you want from a good friend? It\u2019s somebody who's there for you whenever you need some comfort, or you feel scared, or you don't know what to do\u2014it's there with an answer; it's there to try to make you feel better. And if you add the sexual needs element into it, you get a dopamine hit; you get an oxytocin hit; prolactin and serotonin rush. This is going to be addictive; this is going to be dangerous. \r\n\r\nWe're wanting to talk about it, on programs like this, to say to people, \u201cOkay, technology can be great; but you got to manage it rather than it managing you.\u201d\r\n\r\nRon (18:26):\r\n\r\nHey, friends; Ron Deal here, Director of FamilyLife Blended. Obviously, it's tapping in a little bit to the loneliness epidemic.\r\n\r\nRon (19:16):\r\n\r\nYes, it is.\r\n\r\nDave (19:18):\r\n\r\nIs that the only thing going on?\r\n\r\nRon (19:21):\r\n\r\nWell, I don't know that that's the only thing going on. I think anytime you have a comparison to an easy and difficult, we tend to go easy; that's kind of human nature. Making life decisions\u2014about work, about relationships, about family, about getting along with your mother\u2014those are all, sometimes, difficult. AI goes: \u201cYeah, let me give you some thoughts about that,\u201d and \u201cI won't demand that of you.\u201d Just think about how attractive it is to move towards easy all the time. \r\n\r\nI think, with kids, they're just going to be wrapped into it. Look at this\u2014I learned this just today\u201431 percent, one in three young adult men, under the age of 30; and one in four young adult women, 23 percent reported that they have chatted with an AI boyfriend or girlfriend in the last month.\r\n\r\nAnn (20:10):\r\n\r\nOne in three and one in four.\r\n\r\nRon (20:13):\r\n\r\nIf we don't start talking, if we don't start teaching, if we don't start equipping kids to recognize danger\u2014to recognize they need to be in charge of that AI relationship\u2014that just feels so weird to even say it that way\u2014but that's, fundamentally, what it's becoming. We're going to wake up one day, and go, \u201cOh, my goodness; my son\u201d or \u201c\u2026daughter is really hooked.\u201d\r\n\r\nAnn (20:35):\r\n\r\nWhat do you think that conversation could or should sound like with our\u2014I'm thinking, at least, middle school\u2014you're starting that conversation, maybe, earlier.\r\n\r\nRon (20:46):\r\n\r\nI heard somebody say, \u201cHow do you know you're ready to have these conversations?\u201d And they said, \u201cWell, when you're ready to talk about pornography at the dinner table.\u201d \u201cOh, well, I'm not sure I'm ready to have that conversation with my kid.\u201d Absolutely, yes; but at the very same time, technology is entering that into their world and life. We all know kids are being exposed at younger and younger age, just to pornography. They're also getting access now to the AI Chatbots that seem neutral, that seem harmless. \r\n\r\nAgain, I'm not against this stuff; I recognize there are great things that can\u2014outcomes and ministry\u2014that we can do, using AI. We said that at the top; but we just need to be careful that it doesn't, then, pull them into some sort of mentality that they don't already have.\r\n\r\nAnn (21:35):\r\n\r\nWhat do you guys think that conversation sounds like?\u2014at our dinner table?\r\n\r\nRon (21:38):\r\n\r\nWell teach them all the great things AI can do and point out the dangers. It starts with that. I heard one sexual addiction coach, Michael Leahy, say, \u201cParents, partners, and people should watch for the early signs in children, in others, in themselves.\u201d In other words, emotional dependence; you begin to see somebody leaning into this AI companion: \r\n\r\nYou see them keeping secrets from real-live people, but holding them with the AI companion. \r\n\r\nWhen you see them repetitively going back for validation to that AI companion.\r\n\r\nThose are danger signs there is this emotional attachment that is forming that is becoming dangerous. \r\n\r\nOne of the things you're going to say is, \u201cHey, I've noticed you ask questions here; you have the dialogue there. You keep sharing with us stuff that your AI person shared with you as if this is the secret to life, as if this is where all good things come from.\u201d \r\n\r\nLet me just pause for a second: at the end of the day, this is about trusting God. At the top, you were sharing a story, Ann, about the woman who said, \u201cAt the end of a long day, it's hard. I can talk, and get some affirmation, and have a dialogue. It's clean, and it doesn't really demand anything of me.\u201d That's the kind of conversation we should be having with our Lord. When that is shifting away from God to anything\u2014it doesn't matter what it is\u2014that's a red flag. We need to step in, and just make that observation, and say, \u201cLet's talk about that for a bit.\u201d\r\n\r\nAnn (23:30):\r\n\r\nHow do you feel about this conversation with Ron?\r\n\r\nDave (23:32):\r\n\r\nIt's fascinating.\r\n\r\nAnn (23:33):\r\n\r\nWe've never had the discussion on air.\r\n\r\nDave (23:36):\r\n\r\nWe've never had to. We are living in a new world and a new reality that we have to be talking about. This is great stuff with Ron; and he'll be back with us, again, tomorrow. This is something you don't want to miss.
