I thought this was pretty significant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, I wish I could say I made the decision when COVID started. It took, I bet\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014a couple months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes, I think so too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> And the decision was\/when COVID started, I fell into a routine of waking up and grabbing my phone and reading the news.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> We would do it at night, too; because it was the beginning, like, \u201cWhat\u2019s happening?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> I mean, obviously, you want to know what\u2019s going on, and there was all kinds of news around the world about the disease\/about the pandemic. I found myself\u2014like the <em>first<\/em> thing\u2014I was still in bed; I would grab my phone, which probably should be somewhere else, but it was right there on my nightstand. I\u2019d go right to the <em>New York Times. <\/em>I would read the stats, and how it\u2019s an outbreak, and the latest from the CDC.<\/p>\n<p>All I know is I got fearful, and I got discouraged. It was, at least, a month\/maybe two\u2014I remember, one day, going\u2014\u201cThis is <em>not<\/em> a good practice; this is absolutely <em>terrible<\/em>!\u201d [Laughter] Not that I don\u2019t want to know the news;\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014that is important. \u201cI need to start with the Word.\u201d And I chose to put the Word before the news.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> I think a lot of us have heard this; but that saying is: \u201cWhat you behold, you become.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> And I think that\u2019s <em>so true<\/em>; because the more I behold something, I\u2019m shaped by that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve got with us Gretchen Saffles today, <em>again<\/em>. I\u2019m looking at you\u2014you\u2019re smiling\u2014you wrote a book called <em>The Well-Watered Woman. <\/em>In that book\u2014we read it\u2014you talk about this very thing; that\u2019s why we brought it up. You said, \u201cPutting the Word\u201d\u2014I think\u2014\u201cbefore the world\u201d?\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014is your phrase.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> \u201cWord before world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> So welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Thank you for having me. I\u2019m excited to talk about this, and I\u2019m <em>smiling<\/em> because I did the same thing in that season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> You did? I bet a lot of us did!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Oh, yes!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Because we wanted to know what was happening.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes; I mean, it became addictive to go, \u201cWhat\u2019s the next thing?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> \u201cWhat did they find out?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> And I found myself just in this cycle of fear, and defeat, and discouragement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> I know you didn\u2019t do it like me\u2014because we\u2019re empty-nesters\u2014and you\u2019ve got two little boys at home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> I know! [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> You\u2019ve got a ministry you\u2019re leading.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014that you founded: Well-Watered Women.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> You\u2019ve got a husband.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> I mean, anyway, you\u2019ve got all\u2014I mean, you probably didn\u2019t even get to sleep!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> I mean, I wake up; and nobody\u2019s there. I can grab my phone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Oh, yes! My husband and I said, \u201cWhy couldn\u2019t this have happened when we were newlyweds? We could have just had so much fun!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> That\u2019s true.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> But with young kids at home, you know, and everybody quarantined, whew! It was exhausting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> But yes, it\u2019s so easy. I mean, really, our phones are addictive\u2014it\u2019s like this automatic thing\u2014we reach for our phone, and we check it first thing without going to God\u2019s Word.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> It\u2019s <em>everything<\/em> we\u2019re searching and looking at.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> And it\u2019s <em>easy<\/em> to fall into the habit of doing that every day. I am <em>with you <\/em>on this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen: <\/strong>Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> This is my, \u201cUgh!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every time I\u2019m in the Bible, and Dave and I are driving, I\u2019m like, \u201cLet me read you this!\u201d Which is so interesting, because I remember being in my 30s\u2014and I went to a conference\/a women\u2019s conference\u2014and this older woman, who was probably in her 70s, said she\u2019d been reading the One-Year Bible every single year for 20 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Wow!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> And I was like, \u201cWhat?! How would you do <em>that<\/em>?\u201d I\u2019m always thinking, you know, \u201cWhat should I read in the Word today?\u201d But I heard her, and I thought, \u201cI\u2019m going to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> She\u2019s on year\u201416?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019m on year 16.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> That\u2019s incredible\u2014doing the One-Year Bible?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> I like it because: I\u2019ve got an Old Testament Scripture; I\u2019ve got a New Testament, Psalm and Proverb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> <em>Nothing<\/em> has changed my life, besides Jesus, quite as much as just being in the Word.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> It changes everything! It\u2019s <em>so<\/em> good!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> So talk about the \u201cWord before world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen<\/strong>: Yes! Well, one thing that I say a lot\u2014and I\u2019ve learned myself is\u2014\u201cThe more you taste Jesus in the Word, the rest of the world will lose its flavor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> <em>Yes<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> And so the more\u2014you were listening to that lady, going, \u201cHow?!\u201d\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> \u2014I had a mentor named Karen. She was just\/she loves the Lord <em>so much<\/em>! You just\/sitting in her presence, you were like, \u201cTell me about Jesus!\u201d [Laughter] But she was a woman of the Word! She, for all of her children and grandchildren, read a Bible specifically for them, writing prayers and notes in it, and would give it to them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wow!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> And I would go, \u201cHow have you read that many Bibles?\u201d She had a big family! But she <em>loved <\/em>the Word, and I saw that the <em>more<\/em> she tasted the goodness of God in His Word\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> \u2014not just in the passages that are comfortable\u2014that\u2019s what she desired! I have seen that in my own life.<\/p>\n<p>And this was not just\u2014you know, Dave, you were saying for a month or two you did this\u2014this was a <em>lot<\/em>\/a very long time for me\u2014that I would sleep with my phone next to me. I would go to bed, scrolling\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> \u2014you know, reading, checking email: \u201cIs there anything else I need to see before the day ends?\u201d And then, I wouldn\u2019t sleep great; or I would wake up in the middle of the night and \u201cOh, I can\u2019t sleep. I should just, you know, check it and see how everything\u2019s going.\u201d Then, I would wake up and I\u2019d do that.<\/p>\n<p>My whole day was thrown off kilter! I didn\u2019t have peace; I didn\u2019t have direction or discernment. You know, everything just felt like it was falling apart; and I felt like I was falling behind\u2014because, you know, the dawn of social media\u2014you\u2019re always seeing everyone\u2019s accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014and you\u2019re comparing yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> You\u2019re always! And it\u2019s just right in front of our faces, more than it\u2019s ever been. The more I filled my mind with that, the more it led me <em>away<\/em> from Jesus; it led me <em>away<\/em> from His Word.<\/p>\n<p>Then, I would come to the Word, and I would spend time with Him, and go, \u201cWhy?!\u201d \u201cWhy am I spending time on my phone?\u201d But just\/you know, I would see this <em>huge<\/em> difference. My husband could see it! People around us can see the difference when we have spent time with Jesus and when we <em>haven\u2019t<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I made a decision\u2014you know, one year\u2014I <em>love<\/em> reevaluating at the end of each year; I love that! Some people don\u2019t really care, but I just find it really helpful for me to look back and to look ahead. I had always been a fan of making resolutions; but that year, I realized, \u201cYou know, the only thing\u2014if I just did <em>one thing <\/em>this year; if I put God\u2019s Word first in my day\u2014if I didn\u2019t pick up my phone right away\u2014that would actually change everything. I don\u2019t even have to make resolutions for all of these other things that I want to change, because God\u2019s Word will inform and <em>transform<\/em> my life!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wrote that down: \u201cI want to put the Word before the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Okay; now, I\u2019m listening to you, thinking, \u201cYou have two. Especially, when you made that decision,\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014did you have any kids yet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> I did. Oh, yes! I was a young mom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> So they were <em>little<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Man, as young moms, it\u2019s the <em>hardest<\/em> thing to get in the Word\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014when you have your kids crawling all over you\u2014then, they need you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> You have to run to the bathroom and lock the door; right?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> No; they\u2019re in there with you!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> I was going to say: \u201cThey\u2019re knocking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Their little fingers are coming under, going, \u201cMommy! Are you done?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Did you see how you both just <em>jumped<\/em> on that? That\u2019s hilarious!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> So how did you do that as a young mom? You can give today at FamilyLifeToday.com or by calling 1-800-358-6329; that\u2019s 1-800-\u201cF\u201d as in family, \u201cL\u201d as in life, and then the word, \u201cTODAY.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alright, now back to Dave and Ann with Gretchen Saffles and how she finds time to read the Bible with young kids at home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> I had to let go of my expectations of what it would look like to be in the Word; because for me, I thought, \u201cIf it\u2019s not quiet\u2026\u201d;\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cIf it\u2019s not early\u2026\u201d;\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cIf I don\u2019t have my coffee, my journal\u2026\u201d\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026my chair\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Right! So it started to look like: \u201cOkay, my kid\u2014I woke up early\u2014but they\u2019re already awake!\u201d Somehow, they <em>know<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> They know!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> They know when I set my phone alarm early.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> I know.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> And they\u2019re just like, \u201cHi, Mommy. Hi; I\u2019m right here.\u201d I started to realize: \u201cI\u2019m just going to have to open it with them right here. There may be a cartoon playing, and I may only get five minutes in the Word right now; but five minutes with Jesus is better than no time with Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> God can <em>multiply<\/em> those minutes. He knows our seasons of life; He knew I was busy! I found other creative ways; because sometimes, that five minutes just wasn\u2019t enough. Praise the Lord, we have the audio Bible now! You know, we also have amazing podcasts, like this one, and things that we can pull up throughout the day that will <em>feed<\/em> our soul.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> And I think we have to understand\u2014I mean, I was thinking as you two ladies were talking\u2014I thought, \u201cIt\u2019s like this: \u2018We <em>all<\/em> know how to plug in our phone\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cevery night, every day\u2014whatever. We even have super chargers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cAnd I think we have to understand that that is our <em>soul<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cWell-watered woman\/well-watered man is: \u2018If I\u2019m not connecting with Jesus\u2019\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014nobody has a phone and doesn\u2019t plug it in every night or, at least, to get charged. You\u2019re like, \u201cI can\u2019t live without my phone being charged!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Oh, yes! If it\u2019s at one percent, you\u2019re freaking out!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> \u201cIf this <em>dies<\/em>, what\u2019s going to happen?!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> And that\u2019s our soul!\u2014that\u2019s our heart!\u2014it\u2019s like: \u201cWhen\u2019s the last time you plugged in?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes; absolutely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> That\u2019s good, Dave.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019ve gone a week: \u201cI\u2019m good!\u201d No, you can\u2019t go a week and be \u201cgood!\u201d Your battery is <em>dead<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> You\u2019re <em>dry<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> And everything you\u2019re trying to do in your marriage, in your life, and in your ministry\u2014you don\u2019t have the energy\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014you don\u2019t have the power. It\u2019s literally through the source of the <em>Word<\/em>, which Jesus is the Living Word and the written Word\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014anyway, it\u2019s a beautiful thing to hear you guys talk about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes! Speaking of batteries, I was joking with you guys earlier how I know <em>nothing<\/em> about sports\u2014[Laughter]\u2014it\u2019s embarrassing\u2014my lack of sports knowledge. The same is true about <em>cars<\/em>. When my husband and I were dating, I had this Ford Taurus\u2014old!\u2014I mean, I can\u2019t even tell you how old it was. It was embarrassing; when we traded it in, they were like, \u201cHere\u2019s $5 for your car; it\u2019s worth nothing!\u201d [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>I thought taking care of it is getting gas. And my boyfriend at the time\u2014who is now my husband\u2014he said, \u201cHave you taken your car in, you know, to get the oil changed?\u2014to get it checked?\u201d And I was like, \u201cWhat? [Laughter] Are you supposed to do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took it in for me. It was kind of driving, not-great; you know. But the car mechanic, when he picked it up, said, \u201cThe good news is your car is not going to die today. The bad news is, you drove it\u201d\u2014you know, he thought it was him\u2014\u201c10,000 miles past its needed oil change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> I mean, it was\u2014it really was\u2014on the brink of death! And do you know why I drove it that far? Because you\u2019re thinking, \u201cIsn\u2019t there a little light that comes on?\u201d; right?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> \u201cYou should see that there\u2019s something wrong.\u201d I had a Bible verse on my dashboard, and it <em>covered<\/em> it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> No way!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> You <em>never<\/em> saw!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> I had no clue! Absolutely no clue\u2014driving all over the place with this oil sign, saying, \u201cYou need to change your oil,\u201d\u2014and isn\u2019t that the same thing that can happen in our lives? We get <em>so<\/em> busy\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> That\u2019s hilarious!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> \u2014doing things that we forget to <em>be <\/em>with Jesus. We forget that soul care and soul maintenance that we actually need every day; because when we\u2019re pouring out, you get dry at the end of the day. I mean, you know, the rain comes on the earth; but then it dries up again. We need more rain for the plants to grow and, you know, for things to keep going. And the same is true for our soul. You can\u2019t just fill up on Sunday and think that that\u2019s going to keep your tank full the rest of the week.<\/p>\n<p>It's impossible, because you don\u2019t know what Monday holds! Monday may hold a diagnosis or news of something that <em>crushes <\/em>you. Well, that news from Sunday\u2014you still need good news today\u2014and God\u2019s Word does satisfy. You know, it says that: \u201cIn the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word <em>was <\/em>God.\u201d When we spend time in God\u2019s Word, we are literally reading the words of God!\u2014like the living and active words. No other news, no news article, no blog article, no Instagram<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> post will ever compare or be able to replace God\u2019s living and active Word.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> And it\u2019s hard to explain\u2014and I know we all know, based on this conversation\u2014it\u2019s hard to explain to somebody what time in the Word does to a follower of Christ\u2019s soul. There\u2019s something almost mysterious.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> It\u2019s like it\u2019s powerful, but it\u2019s beyond power; it\u2019s supernatural. And, again, it isn\u2019t like this vitamin\u2014and if I miss it, it\u2019s\u2026\u2014but there\u2019s something that God resets: He reminds you who He is. I always used to preach that: \u201cIt\u2019s not the size of your faith that matters; it\u2019s the size of your God!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because we\u2019re always like, \u201cI want more faith!\u201d Well, Jesus said you need mustard seed-sized faith\/small faith. But if you don\u2019t know who God is, then every time you open the Word\u2014here\u2019s what happens to me\u2014I read; and I\u2019m like, \u201cOh, my goodness; You\u2019re that great! You\u2019re that majestic! You\u2019re that holy! You\u2019re that big. I <em>forgot<\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> And so, it\u2019s like this supercharge in your life that I don\u2019t think you can understand until you do it. It\u2019s like, \u201cWhat just happened?\u201d Everything got reset. The news is still the news, but I\u2019m okay!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Why? God\u2019s Word reminded me who He is. He\u2019s with me. The God of all creation is literally in my life; I can make it today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> I think it would be really important\u2014and I think this is important for all of us to really analyze our soul\u2014you know, to think, \u201cHow are you doing right now? Do you feel dry? Do you feel broken? Do you feel defeated?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because, I mean, I love the words to the woman at the well when Jesus said, in John 4, to the woman at the well in Samaria: \u201cAnyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again.\u201d And I feel like that\u2019s the world\u2014when you drink it, you\u2019re always\u2014it\u2019s the It Theology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> It is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u201cBut those who drink the water I give will <em>never <\/em>be thirsty again.\u201d It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve used that before\u2014and I\u2019m sorry I\u2019m doing cleaning analogies here\u2014but I take a sponge; you know?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> And I cut it out into the shape of a heart. I remember standing on this stage with women. It [the sponge] was hard; it was crusty. You could take your finger on that sponge\u2014and I put it on the microphone\u2014it\u2019s like, \u201cThis is how our hearts become.\u201d And I would scratch like [scratching sound]; [Laughter] you know? It\u2019s like this hard\u2014you can\u2019t bend it!\u2014it\u2019s hard. And I think it\u2019s easy for us to get to that place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> And then, here\u2019s what we can do: we go to church on Sunday, and you put this little drop of water on this sponge. It creates a little soft spot, but it still needs to be <em>saturated<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> The more we\u2019re in God\u2019s Word, the more we desire God\u2019s Word, as you said, Gretchen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> The longer we\u2019re away, we start looking for other things to fill us; and we don\u2019t have the longing that we may have [had] to be in the Word.<\/p>\n<p>I think it\u2019s really good for us, as listeners, to think through: \u201cHow is my heart? Is it hard? Is it crunchy? Is it dry?\u201d\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014if you talk about it. Or when you\u2019re in the Word, and God starts to <em>saturate<\/em> it\u2014you can <em>squeeze <\/em>that sponge! The fruit of the Spirit starts pouring out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> And that living water starts pouring out. Things aren\u2019t perfect, but it gives you a new perspective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Right! And you\u2019re <em>never <\/em>too far off.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> He <em>always<\/em> has the invitation of: \u201cCome! Come!\u201d You think of Isaiah 55; He\u2019s saying, \u201cCome!\u201d\u2014you know, anybody!\u00a0 \u201cIf you\u2019ve got no bread, come and eat!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> \u201cNo money,\u201d\u2014\u201c[there\u2019s] no price,\u201d\u2014\u201cjust come!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, you think of Matthew 11, when Jesus says, \u201cCome, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you <em>rest.<\/em>\u201d This morning, I was reading in Revelation 22. I\u2019ve been really wanting to set my mind on the joy that is to come; that someday, there will be nothing accursed; there will be no pain, no hardship.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> But when you get to the end, it says, \u201cThe Spirit and the bride say, \u2018Come.\u2019\u201d This is the open invitation from God to us: even when we feel discouraged; even when we\u2019ve gone days, months\u2014maybe someone\u2019s listening\/they\u2019ve gone <em>years<\/em>\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> \u2014without opening the Word, and they feel too far off\/too far gone: \u201cI mean, how can I even open God\u2019s Word? <em>Where<\/em> do I open God\u2019s Word to?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> \u201cWill it still speak to <em>me<\/em>?\u201d Yes! He says, \u201cCome!\u201d And God meets us there: He meets us in our brokenness, in our need, in our thirst.<\/p>\n<p>And the thing is\u2014you know, you mentioned reading the One-Year Bible\u2014God\u2019s Word is living and active. It\u2019s not just passages that, you know, are just like: \u201cOh, I feel so good, walking away from that today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> It\u2019s also the passages, where you walk, away convicted and humbled,\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh, yes!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> \u2014and maybe even <em>uncomfortable<\/em>. I mean, there are days that I read Scripture, and I\u2019m going, \u201cUh, what? I\u2019m a little confused today.\u201d But still, God <em>speaks<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> He\u2019s still revealing Himself and the truth of His Word. He says, \u201cCome!\u201d No matter where you are\u2014even if your life is a <em>mess<\/em>; even if it\u2019s loud\u2014because we think that a \u201cquiet time\u201d has to be quiet and look a certain way. [Laughter] No! I mean, leave your Bible open when you\u2019re cooking dinner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> If you can\u2019t find time\/if your life is that busy, leave it open. You know, listen to it. There are so many spiritual disciplines that Jesus modeled for us in His life to show us that there are all these ways that: \u201cYou can commune with Me\u201d: you can turn on worship music in the car; you know, listen to these podcasts; meditate on Scripture. You know, you can be standing in line in the grocery store and meditating on this <em>miraculous<\/em> truth of God\u2019s Word. I mean, what a gift from God above!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> As I\u2019m listening to both of you talk, I also think everything we\u2019re talking about, in terms of plugging in a daily rhythm of the Word, is also true for our marriages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Right!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> I mean, think about it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh, yes!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> It\u2019s the same principle: if we\u2019re not connecting as a couple, communicating, <em>and<\/em>\u2014we wrote this in our <em>Vertical Marriage <\/em>book\u2014one of the ways to bring the vertical relationship with Christ into your marriage is just to pray together. I mean, I pray; she prays\u2014no, pray <em>together<\/em>\u2014it doesn\u2019t have to be a 20-minute prayer; it can be a 1-minute or a 5-minute prayer; but something happens when a couple, following Jesus, goes vertical <em>together<\/em>\u2014right?\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh, yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014or even opens the Word <em>together<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And again, there\u2019s maybe a husband, going, \u201cI don\u2019t even know what to do.\u201d Just open it up\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014almost <em>anywhere<\/em>. If you want somewhere to start, start in the book of Luke or the Gospel of John. Just read five verses about Jesus, and say, \u201cLet\u2019s talk about that.\u201d I bet you God will meet you right there in your marriage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Well, in the YouVersion app, there is even Scripture you can read together. You can have a Bible plan; you can read it together and comment on it. Those are just good strategies, especially if you\u2019re busy and you have kids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> But it\u2019s great for our kids to see that as well,\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014like, \u201cMom and Dad are praying together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I used to have a Bible in my car, in my bathroom, by the sink\u2014it\u2019s like all of the places I would stop\u2014and I would just try to get a verse in here or there, because it\u2019s feeding my soul.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> And I think, too, with our kids, to get them to realize: \u201cThis is God\u2019s Word, and He speaks to us through it!\u201d It\u2019s not some old, dusty book, lying up there, that we never open. Give them the significance: \u201cGod wants to talk to us through His Word!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even when we go to church\u2014this is bad; this is something I did\u2014we can become consumers at church. I remember\u2014and here we are; we <em>started<\/em> our church\u2014but I remember, when our kids were little, I would get in the car and say, \u201cWhat did you guys think today?\u201d Bad question!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen: <\/strong>Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann: <\/strong>Because now, \u201cOkay, let me give you my <em>opinion<\/em> on what happened at church today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Talk about a consumer mentality that I was building into my kids.<\/p>\n<p>I switched that as they got older; and I started saying, \u201cTell me what God said to you today through the Word. As the Word was preached, what did you feel like the Holy Spirit spoke to you?\u201d Because then it gets them used to: \u201cOh, God wants to speak to me?!\u201d\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014and \u201cThe Word was shared and God was speaking.\u201d It helps them to anticipate: \u201cOh, I need to hear! God\u2019s going to say something at church today through His Word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes! And then, it\u2019s not about <em>me<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> It\u2019s not about me and: \u201cWell, how did you <em>feel<\/em>? What did you <em>think<\/em>?\u201d No! It\u2019s about God\u2019s truth that <em>never<\/em> changes, but it <em>always<\/em> changes us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> And even if the pastor\u2019s <em>boring<\/em>\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014God\u2019s speaking today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> Yes; even if the worship is off.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Why would you say that, honey?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Not that you were ever [boring];\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh, whatever!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014you really <em>weren\u2019t<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave:<\/strong> All I would say is: \u201cToday, open the Word. It\u2019s that simple.\u201d I mean, we can talk about it all you want. We talk about prayer all the time; how about you pray today? How about\u2014you know what?\u2014\u201cWhatever day this is, this is the day I start a daily rhythm of opening the Word of God and watching.\u201d Get the Word in your life.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, don\u2019t put it on your dashboard and cover up your oil light.
