When you do that\u2014not <em>if<\/em>\u2014but now, that you\u2019ve taken the pledge\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014you\u2019ve taken the pledge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014you\u2019ve taken the pledge\u2014when you do that, write us and tell us what happened: perhaps with one of your children; perhaps with a friend, a neighbor\/a family member.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it was just last night: Barbara and I were praying together about one of our children. We just talked about that particular child and wondered about the child\u2019s salvation experience. They haven\u2019t given us any reason to think they\u2019re not really a Christian, but we began to think about how <em>vague<\/em> it has been; it hasn\u2019t really been articulated.<\/p>\n<p>I think what we\u2019re going to do this week, on the broadcast, is going to equip our listeners to have conversations like that. It\u2019s going to be good for Barbara and me, as well, to <em>revisit<\/em> the gospel\u2014and talk about how it relates to this particular child\u2019s life\u2014and help reaffirm or reestablish that commitment that this particular child has already made, I think.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> You hear a lot about parents seizing teachable moments with their children, and Easter is an <em>annual<\/em> teachable moment for families.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And if we\u2019re smart, as parents, we can seize those moments and use them as an opportunity to, again, reinforce the gospel\u2014help our children understand it\u2014because it isn\u2019t easy to grasp. There\u2019s a growing understanding of grace and forgiveness, and there\u2019s a growing understanding of what it means to go to heaven, and what death is, for young people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think what parents ought to do is use this annual time of celebration as a time to build biblical values into their children\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of young people today, Bob, who don\u2019t believe in eternal life, who don\u2019t have any hope that there\u2019s anything beyond the grave. You\u2019ve got to wonder [if their perspective would be different]\u2014if those kids grew up in homes, where the parents took the time to teach from the Scripture and to reinforce the message of Christianity, which is: there is forgiveness of sins and that God has reached down and redeemed us\u2014the helpless\/the hopeless\u2014and has given us the reality of eternal life if we will place our faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p>[Studio]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That is Dennis Rainey and Bob Lepine, giving us a pretty big charge!\u2014share Jesus with our children and, also, with a neighbor or a loved one, who doesn\u2019t know Him.<\/p>\n<p>How easily do we share what we love? I mean, just think about it! If you\u2019re thinking about sharing Jesus, you\u2019re like, \u201cOooh, that\u2019s just a little bit scary!\u201d But we share, all the time, things that we love. If you love fitness, then you are, online, sharing how many miles you ran this morning; or if you love a book, well, then, you gladly proclaim how it changed your life. So if we love Jesus, sharing Jesus should be easy; right?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe, it\u2019s not!\u2014maybe we get hung up somewhere. \u201cHow do we enter that conversation?\u201d\u2014I think that\u2019s probably the hardest part\u2014is: \u201cHow do we <em>enter<\/em> that conversation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, I want you to hear how Dennis Rainey talked with a group of elementary-aged children. I want you to pay special attention to how he asked <em>one simple question<\/em> to get their attention.<\/p>\n<p>[Audio Recording]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Does anybody here\u2014hold your hand up if you know the answer to this\u2014does anyone here know what happened on the first Easter?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jimmy:<\/strong> He rose from the dead!<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> Jesus died on the cross, and He rose again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; see this big book right here?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Children:<\/strong> Yes!<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> My brother has that!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He does? Does he like it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> Uh-huh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is called <em>The Beginner\u2019s Bible<\/em>. There\u2019s a story here, and I want you to see the picture. Do you see the picture, right over here, on this page right here?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Child 3:<\/strong> That\u2019s Jesus!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What\u2019s Jesus doing there?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Child 3:<\/strong> He\u2019s praying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> He\u2019s praying!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you know what He had done before He went to the garden to pray?<\/p>\n<p>He had come into Jerusalem, riding\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jimmy:<\/strong> \u2014a donkey!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014a donkey; that\u2019s right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> And they said, \u201cCrucify Him!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; He is praying, because it\u2019s getting ready to be a very sad day in His life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jimmy:<\/strong> And they waved palm branches and said, \u201cHosanna!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> Yes; and they took their shirt off and laid it on the ground.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you know what the surprise was that God had planned?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Child 3:<\/strong> Jesus would rose from the dead and rise from the dead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you mean He would come back, alive?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Children:<\/strong> Yes; yep!<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> \u2014from the dead!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jimmy:<\/strong> And they didn\u2019t even know that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> \u2014from the dead!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> He did, and they didn\u2019t even know that He was gonna rose from the dead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; well, this book says, \u201cAnd His friends would not be sad for long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, look at this next page: \u201cSurprise.\u201d What\u2019s the picture of there?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jimmy:<\/strong> I know!<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> I know!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What is it, Jimmy?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jimmy:<\/strong> The stone had been rolled!<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> The stone had been rolled! Jesus\u2019s body isn\u2019t there anymore. He\u2019s not there anymore! An angel\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Child 3:<\/strong> I can\u2019t see the pictures!<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> And they said: \u201cGood news! The Savior has rose from the dead!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[Studio]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That\u2019s so cute: hearing James Lepine and, also, John Lepine, from over 20 years ago, explaining the Easter story.<\/p>\n<p>Well, you know, I need a break right now; because obviously, the pollen has been flying in the air and I need to go\u2014well, sorry\u2014clear some sinuses. On the other side, we\u2019re going to fast-forward a couple of decades; and I\u2019m going to sit down with some <em>cuteness<\/em>. We\u2019re going to talk about the story of Easter with some young kids.<\/p>\n<p>[Radio Station Spot Break]<\/p>\n<p>Welcome back to <em>FamilyLife This Week<\/em>. I'm Michelle Hill. We are about two weeks away from Easter, and how do we share this Easter story with our kids so that they can retell it?<\/p>\n<p>You know, the story of Christ dying on the cross\u2014it\u2019s kind of heavy; isn\u2019t it?\u2014it really is! All that Christ went through that day\u2014we celebrate it, and we turn it into something glorious and pastel-y and eggy, and all of that\u2014but it really is something that is so heavy. When you take a look at that <em>entire<\/em> week, leading up to Jesus\u2019s resurrection, there are so many emotions that week. That can be hard for kids to understand.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down with some kids, a few days ago; and I used an egg carton, filled with a dozen plastic eggs. In each egg, there were symbols for the journey that Jesus went through His last week\u2014like a plastic donkey, and there\u2019s also a cross, and there are some coins. It\u2019s really quite easy\u2014it\u2019s a craft that you can do with your kids\u2014easy to put together\u2014you can google it online. I happened to use FamilyLife\u2019s Resurrection Eggs. These eggs are <em>great<\/em> tools in sharing the special story with kids.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I want you to pay special attention to what I call the kid-effect. Not only are they as cute as buttons, but here\u2019s the thing\u2014most adults\u2014I mean, come on\u2014I\u2019ve lost that child-like wonder; and I\u2019m sure you have, too\u2014you know, that, \u201cWow!\u201d when, all of a sudden, it\u2019s like they understand something, and they get it. I want you to listen to that as we open up these eggs, and we share the Easter story.<\/p>\n<p>[Audio Recording]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Look!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> Rainbow eggs?!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> I know! Okay; pick one egg.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> Dis one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> What is that?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> She already did this one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Well, what is that, Estelle?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s a cow!\u2014no; a horse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Well, look at it again. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> It\u2019s a donkey!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s a horse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s a donkey; isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> Yeah.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> What was the donkey used for?\u2014do you know?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> Yeah; milk!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> Oh, look at you!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Oh, what did you find?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> Money!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Money?!\u2014do you know what coins have to do with the Easter story?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know. Open up it!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Okay; what\u2019s inside of there?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> A hand!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Oh, what are the hands doing?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> Um, I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> I want my Daddy!! [Crying]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> Judas was a God-follower\u2014a fake follower, to be pacific\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> Estelle; Estelle\u2014Estelle!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> \u2014or a disciple.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> We get to celebrate Jesus raising from the\u2014the \u201cD-word!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> [Crying]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> I don\u2019t like to say, \u201cdead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> And then someone will have to call the ambulance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> Why did he want to kill Him?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> And when can we get that microphone down?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> We can\u2019t get that microphone down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> I hit her, and she cried.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> Oh, I know this one!! It\u2019s\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> I already did that one!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> It\u2019s like this thing, like\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> Mom, say it on the radio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> An evil person\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> Say something on the radio!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> The amblulance will bring us to heaven!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Is that\u2014is that what happens?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> Can I open this one?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Hey, look!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy: <\/strong>Where\u2019d this come from?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> When I do this with my hands, what does it look like?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> Praying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Praying! Who do we pray to?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> God!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Do you sin?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> Everyone sins!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Can you do this egg, Titus?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Titus:<\/strong> A cross!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Oh, a cross!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> That\u2019s what they put Jesus on!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> And that means He couldn\u2019t push up and get a breath.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Why did He die on the cross?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> Hey, here\u2019s a donkey!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> For <em>us<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> For <em>us<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> So we don\u2019t have to die.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> What is that?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> A rock!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s a rock.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> That\u2019s what they put\u2014a very big rock\u2014in front of His tomb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> You\u2019re so right!<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s in this egg? What is it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s empty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> Empty!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Ohh!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> He was alive again!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Ohhh! What do we celebrate on Easter Sunday?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> Jesus is risen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> He\u2019s <em>alive!!!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> He\u2019s <em>alive<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>[Studio]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> [Laughter] Okay; so sharing the gospel\u2014you know, the story of Jesus with children\u2014it\u2019s is so simple, and it\u2019s <em>so<\/em> fun! You know, it\u2019s the best legacy that you can leave your child. But what\u2019s the legacy that you leave your neighbor?<\/p>\n<p>Remember the resolutions, at the beginning of the show, that Bob was talking about? He was talking about\u2014that, number one, you want to share the gospel with your child; but, number two, you want to share it with someone else\u2014with your neighbor or someone else that you know. But how do you do that?<\/p>\n<p>I pulled Pastor Bob in; because after all, we\u2019re just a few weeks out from Easter. This is the perfect season to be thinking about how to evangelize and share Jesus with others. Here\u2019s my conversation with Bob Lepine.<\/p>\n<p>[Previous Conversation]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Today, on <em>FamilyLife This Week, <\/em>we\u2019ve been talking about how easy it is to share the gospel. We first started with how easy it is to share it with our kids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Now, I want to move on to adults. Just explain to us, in three minutes: \u201cWhat <em>is <\/em>the gospel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in three minutes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Sorry, Bob! We are on a time limit. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ll make this as simple as possible. I need to acknowledge that I\u2019m borrowing from something I heard John Piper talk about, more than a decade ago. He said: \u201cFirst of all, remember that the gospel is an historical event. This is not a philosophy or a moral code. This is an event that happened in time and space. The event is: Jesus came, lived a perfect life, died a substitutionary death, and then rose again from the dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First Corinthians 15\u2014Paul says: \u201cThis is the gospel I received\/you received\u2014you\u2019re standing in it. This is the gospel by which you\u2019re saved.\u201d And then he goes on to say: \u201cIt\u2019s that Jesus died and He was resurrected.\u201d So the gospel has to include the death and resurrection of Christ for it to be good news.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes; right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Apart from that, we don\u2019t have good news. But once we understand that Jesus died and was raised again, we have to understand the implications of that. There are implications in the heavens, because the battle between Satan and God was decided on the cross: Satan was defeated; death was defeated on the cross.<\/p>\n<p>And then, there are implications for us; because we\u2019re, now, given the opportunity to respond to that gospel and to believe in the work of Christ\u2014and to receive, as a result, the <em>benefits<\/em> that are ours as a result of the gospel\u2014forgiveness of sin, meaning and purpose in life, being transformed into the image of Christ.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I boil it down to three words, typically: \u201cBecause of the gospel, we have forgiveness; we have transformation; and we have hope\u2014three things we didn\u2019t have before\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Oh, that\u2019s good to remember!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cforgiveness, transformation, and hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And then, beyond that\u2014John Piper said\u2014\u201cI\u2019m afraid many Christians today, if you went to them and you said: \u2018You can live in heaven forever. There\u2019ll be no more sorrow, no more night; streets of gold. You\u2019ll be reunited with your loved ones. The only thing is: Jesus won\u2019t be there.\u2019\u201d He said, \u201cI\u2019m afraid many Christians would say, \u2018That\u2019s okay!\u2019\u2014that what we\u2019re longing for is something other than Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> He says: \u201cWe\u2019ve got to remember that, at the core, the gospel is Jesus. That\u2019s the good news! We are reconciled with our Creator, the God of the universe, through the work of His Son. That\u2019s the news we need to believe and embrace, and that\u2019s the news we need to share with others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> And it\u2019s not about\u2014I\u2019m just thinking of other things that I love: essential oils, or running, or food, or something like that\u2014I love to share that! But how many times do I share Jesus with my next-door neighbor?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s a good point. One of the reasons we\u2019re inhibited is because, sometimes, when you share the gospel, friends look at you like, \u201cDon\u2019t annoy me with this!\u201d; so we quiet down. Well, they killed Jesus when He shared the gospel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s true.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> So why should we expect that our friends are going to jump up and down and say, \u201cOh, tell me more!\u201d There will be some rejection.<\/p>\n<p>You and I were in a meeting, not long ago, with Ron Hutchcraft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Ron\u2019s a broadcaster; he\u2019s a graduate of Moody Bible Institute; he\u2019s an evangelist. I was getting ready to preach a sermon on how we will be persecuted if we share our faith with others. I asked Ron for advice. He said, \u201cTell people to pray\u201d\u2014what he calls\u2014\u201cthe three-open prayer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> \u201cThree-open prayer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I said, \u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The three-open prayer is something you pray every day: \u201cGod, would You open a door for me in a relationship with somebody I have, who\u2019s a non-Christian? Open a door.\u201d By that, \u201cWould You open a channel in our conversation, where I can just naturally and comfortably, say, \u2018Do you know what\u2019s made a difference in my life?\u2019\u2014where I can share my own story; where I can talk about my relationship with You in a comfortable way.\u201d \u201cLord, would You open a door?\u201d\u2014that\u2019s the first open.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The second open is: \u201cLord, would You open their heart?\u201d Because no matter how eloquently you share what you have to share, it takes God opening the heart of another person for the gospel to be understood and believed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>And then, the third open is: \u201cLord, would You open my mouth?\u201d because we might have an open door and an open heart; but until we open our mouth, the gospel has not been shared. You know, Paul says, \u201cFaith comes by hearing\u2014<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cand hearing by the Word of God\u201d\u2014so it\u2019s incumbent on us\u2014\u201cHow beautiful are the feet that bring the good news,\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cand then share that good news with others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a good resolution. [Laughter] I had forgotten my Easter resolution, from two decades ago; but it\u2019s a good resolution for 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> It is a good resolution!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> And what were those three opens again?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Would you pray that God:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>would give you an open door?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>that He would give you an open heart in the person you\u2019re sharing with?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>and then, would you pray that He would open your mouth to share?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[Studio]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That\u2019s Bob Lepine, sharing the gospel with us and, also, reminding us how easy it is to share the gospel with others.<\/p>\n<p>You know, if there was something Bob was saying in there that got you to thinking\u2014and you\u2019re just wondering about your own life and wanting to know Jesus more\u2014we have some information on our website. When you do that\u2014not <em>if<\/em>\u2014but now, that you\u2019ve taken the pledge\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014you\u2019ve taken the pledge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014you\u2019ve taken the pledge\u2014when you do that, write us and tell us what happened: perhaps with one of your children; perhaps with a friend, a neighbor\/a family member.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it was just last night: Barbara and I were praying together about one of our children. We just talked about that particular child and wondered about the child\u2019s salvation experience. They haven\u2019t given us any reason to think they\u2019re not really a Christian, but we began to think about how <em>vague<\/em> it has been; it hasn\u2019t really been articulated.<\/p>\n<p>I think what we\u2019re going to do this week, on the broadcast, is going to equip our listeners to have conversations like that. It\u2019s going to be good for Barbara and me, as well, to <em>revisit<\/em> the gospel\u2014and talk about how it relates to this particular child\u2019s life\u2014and help reaffirm or reestablish that commitment that this particular child has already made, I think.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> You hear a lot about parents seizing teachable moments with their children, and Easter is an <em>annual<\/em> teachable moment for families.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And if we\u2019re smart, as parents, we can seize those moments and use them as an opportunity to, again, reinforce the gospel\u2014help our children understand it\u2014because it isn\u2019t easy to grasp. There\u2019s a growing understanding of grace and forgiveness, and there\u2019s a growing understanding of what it means to go to heaven, and what death is, for young people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think what parents ought to do is use this annual time of celebration as a time to build biblical values into their children\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of young people today, Bob, who don\u2019t believe in eternal life, who don\u2019t have any hope that there\u2019s anything beyond the grave. You\u2019ve got to wonder [if their perspective would be different]\u2014if those kids grew up in homes, where the parents took the time to teach from the Scripture and to reinforce the message of Christianity, which is: there is forgiveness of sins and that God has reached down and redeemed us\u2014the helpless\/the hopeless\u2014and has given us the reality of eternal life if we will place our faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p>[Studio]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That is Dennis Rainey and Bob Lepine, giving us a pretty big charge!\u2014share Jesus with our children and, also, with a neighbor or a loved one, who doesn\u2019t know Him.<\/p>\n<p>How easily do we share what we love? I mean, just think about it! If you\u2019re thinking about sharing Jesus, you\u2019re like, \u201cOooh, that\u2019s just a little bit scary!\u201d But we share, all the time, things that we love. If you love fitness, then you are, online, sharing how many miles you ran this morning; or if you love a book, well, then, you gladly proclaim how it changed your life. So if we love Jesus, sharing Jesus should be easy; right?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe, it\u2019s not!\u2014maybe we get hung up somewhere. \u201cHow do we enter that conversation?\u201d\u2014I think that\u2019s probably the hardest part\u2014is: \u201cHow do we <em>enter<\/em> that conversation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, I want you to hear how Dennis Rainey talked with a group of elementary-aged children. Do you see the picture, right over here, on this page right here?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Child 3:<\/strong> That\u2019s Jesus!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What\u2019s Jesus doing there?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Child 3:<\/strong> He\u2019s praying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> He\u2019s praying!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you know what He had done before He went to the garden to pray?<\/p>\n<p>He had come into Jerusalem, riding\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jimmy:<\/strong> \u2014a donkey!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014a donkey; that\u2019s right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> And they said, \u201cCrucify Him!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; He is praying, because it\u2019s getting ready to be a very sad day in His life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jimmy:<\/strong> And they waved palm branches and said, \u201cHosanna!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> Yes; and they took their shirt off and laid it on the ground.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you know what the surprise was that God had planned?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Child 3:<\/strong> Jesus would rose from the dead and rise from the dead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you mean He would come back, alive?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Children:<\/strong> Yes; yep!<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> \u2014from the dead!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jimmy:<\/strong> And they didn\u2019t even know that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> \u2014from the dead!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> He did, and they didn\u2019t even know that He was gonna rose from the dead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; well, this book says, \u201cAnd His friends would not be sad for long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, look at this next page: \u201cSurprise.\u201d What\u2019s the picture of there?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jimmy:<\/strong> I know!<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> I know!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What is it, Jimmy?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jimmy:<\/strong> The stone had been rolled!<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> The stone had been rolled! Jesus\u2019s body isn\u2019t there anymore. He\u2019s not there anymore! An angel\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Child 3:<\/strong> I can\u2019t see the pictures!<\/p>\n<p><strong>John:<\/strong> And they said: \u201cGood news! The Savior has rose from the dead!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[Studio]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That\u2019s so cute: hearing James Lepine and, also, John Lepine, from over 20 years ago, explaining the Easter story.<\/p>\n<p>Well, you know, I need a break right now; because obviously, the pollen has been flying in the air and I need to go\u2014well, sorry\u2014clear some sinuses. On the other side, we\u2019re going to fast-forward a couple of decades; and I\u2019m going to sit down with some <em>cuteness<\/em>. We\u2019re going to talk about the story of Easter with some young kids.<\/p>\n<p>[Radio Station Spot Break]<\/p>\n<p>Welcome back to <em>FamilyLife This Week<\/em>. I'm Michelle Hill. We are about two weeks away from Easter, and how do we share this Easter story with our kids so that they can retell it?<\/p>\n<p>You know, the story of Christ dying on the cross\u2014it\u2019s kind of heavy; isn\u2019t it?\u2014it really is! All that Christ went through that day\u2014we celebrate it, and we turn it into something glorious and pastel-y and eggy, and all of that\u2014but it really is something that is so heavy. When you take a look at that <em>entire<\/em> week, leading up to Jesus\u2019s resurrection, there are so many emotions that week. That can be hard for kids to understand.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down with some kids, a few days ago; and I used an egg carton, filled with a dozen plastic eggs. In each egg, there were symbols for the journey that Jesus went through His last week\u2014like a plastic donkey, and there\u2019s also a cross, and there are some coins. It\u2019s really quite easy\u2014it\u2019s a craft that you can do with your kids\u2014easy to put together\u2014you can google it online. I happened to use FamilyLife\u2019s Resurrection Eggs. These eggs are <em>great<\/em> tools in sharing the special story with kids.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I want you to pay special attention to what I call the kid-effect. Not only are they as cute as buttons, but here\u2019s the thing\u2014most adults\u2014I mean, come on\u2014I\u2019ve lost that child-like wonder; and I\u2019m sure you have, too\u2014you know, that, \u201cWow!\u201d when, all of a sudden, it\u2019s like they understand something, and they get it. I want you to listen to that as we open up these eggs, and we share the Easter story.<\/p>\n<p>[Audio Recording]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Look!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> Rainbow eggs?!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> I know! Okay; pick one egg.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> Dis one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> What is that?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> She already did this one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Well, what is that, Estelle?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s a cow!\u2014no; a horse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Well, look at it again. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> It\u2019s a donkey!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s a horse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s a donkey; isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> Yeah.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> What was the donkey used for?\u2014do you know?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> Yeah; milk!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> Oh, look at you!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Oh, what did you find?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> Money!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Money?!\u2014do you know what coins have to do with the Easter story?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know. Open up it!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Okay; what\u2019s inside of there?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> A hand!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Oh, what are the hands doing?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> Um, I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> I want my Daddy!! [Crying]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> Judas was a God-follower\u2014a fake follower, to be pacific\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> Estelle; Estelle\u2014Estelle!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> \u2014or a disciple.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> We get to celebrate Jesus raising from the\u2014the \u201cD-word!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> [Crying]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> I don\u2019t like to say, \u201cdead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> And then someone will have to call the ambulance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> Why did he want to kill Him?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> And when can we get that microphone down?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> We can\u2019t get that microphone down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> I hit her, and she cried.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> Oh, I know this one!! It\u2019s\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> I already did that one!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> It\u2019s like this thing, like\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> Mom, say it on the radio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> An evil person\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> Say something on the radio!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> The amblulance will bring us to heaven!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Is that\u2014is that what happens?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> Can I open this one?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Hey, look!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy: <\/strong>Where\u2019d this come from?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> When I do this with my hands, what does it look like?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> Praying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Praying! Who do we pray to?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> God!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Do you sin?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> Everyone sins!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Can you do this egg, Titus?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Titus:<\/strong> A cross!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Oh, a cross!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> That\u2019s what they put Jesus on!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> And that means He couldn\u2019t push up and get a breath.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Why did He die on the cross?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> Hey, here\u2019s a donkey!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> For <em>us<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> For <em>us<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> So we don\u2019t have to die.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> What is that?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> A rock!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s a rock.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> That\u2019s what they put\u2014a very big rock\u2014in front of His tomb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> You\u2019re so right!<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s in this egg? What is it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s empty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> Empty!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Ohh!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> He was alive again!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Ohhh! What do we celebrate on Easter Sunday?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy:<\/strong> Jesus is risen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl:<\/strong> He\u2019s <em>alive!!!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> He\u2019s <em>alive<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>[Studio]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> [Laughter] Okay; so sharing the gospel\u2014you know, the story of Jesus with children\u2014it\u2019s is so simple, and it\u2019s <em>so<\/em> fun! You know, it\u2019s the best legacy that you can leave your child. But what\u2019s the legacy that you leave your neighbor?<\/p>\n<p>Remember the resolutions, at the beginning of the show, that Bob was talking about? He was talking about\u2014that, number one, you want to share the gospel with your child; but, number two, you want to share it with someone else\u2014with your neighbor or someone else that you know. But how do you do that?<\/p>\n<p>I pulled Pastor Bob in; because after all, we\u2019re just a few weeks out from Easter. This is the perfect season to be thinking about how to evangelize and share Jesus with others. Here\u2019s my conversation with Bob Lepine.<\/p>\n<p>[Previous Conversation]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Today, on <em>FamilyLife This Week, <\/em>we\u2019ve been talking about how easy it is to share the gospel. We first started with how easy it is to share it with our kids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Now, I want to move on to adults. Just explain to us, in three minutes: \u201cWhat <em>is <\/em>the gospel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in three minutes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Sorry, Bob! We are on a time limit. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ll make this as simple as possible. I need to acknowledge that I\u2019m borrowing from something I heard John Piper talk about, more than a decade ago. He said: \u201cFirst of all, remember that the gospel is an historical event. This is not a philosophy or a moral code. This is an event that happened in time and space. The event is: Jesus came, lived a perfect life, died a substitutionary death, and then rose again from the dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First Corinthians 15\u2014Paul says: \u201cThis is the gospel I received\/you received\u2014you\u2019re standing in it. This is the gospel by which you\u2019re saved.\u201d And then he goes on to say: \u201cIt\u2019s that Jesus died and He was resurrected.\u201d So the gospel has to include the death and resurrection of Christ for it to be good news.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes; right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Apart from that, we don\u2019t have good news. But once we understand that Jesus died and was raised again, we have to understand the implications of that. There are implications in the heavens, because the battle between Satan and God was decided on the cross: Satan was defeated; death was defeated on the cross.<\/p>\n<p>And then, there are implications for us; because we\u2019re, now, given the opportunity to respond to that gospel and to believe in the work of Christ\u2014and to receive, as a result, the <em>benefits<\/em> that are ours as a result of the gospel\u2014forgiveness of sin, meaning and purpose in life, being transformed into the image of Christ.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I boil it down to three words, typically: \u201cBecause of the gospel, we have forgiveness; we have transformation; and we have hope\u2014three things we didn\u2019t have before\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Oh, that\u2019s good to remember!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cforgiveness, transformation, and hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And then, beyond that\u2014John Piper said\u2014\u201cI\u2019m afraid many Christians today, if you went to them and you said: \u2018You can live in heaven forever. There\u2019ll be no more sorrow, no more night; streets of gold. You\u2019ll be reunited with your loved ones. The only thing is: Jesus won\u2019t be there.\u2019\u201d He said, \u201cI\u2019m afraid many Christians would say, \u2018That\u2019s okay!\u2019\u2014that what we\u2019re longing for is something other than Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> He says: \u201cWe\u2019ve got to remember that, at the core, the gospel is Jesus. That\u2019s the good news! We are reconciled with our Creator, the God of the universe, through the work of His Son. That\u2019s the news we need to believe and embrace, and that\u2019s the news we need to share with others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> And it\u2019s not about\u2014I\u2019m just thinking of other things that I love: essential oils, or running, or food, or something like that\u2014I love to share that! But how many times do I share Jesus with my next-door neighbor?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s a good point. One of the reasons we\u2019re inhibited is because, sometimes, when you share the gospel, friends look at you like, \u201cDon\u2019t annoy me with this!\u201d; so we quiet down. Well, they killed Jesus when He shared the gospel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s true.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> So why should we expect that our friends are going to jump up and down and say, \u201cOh, tell me more!\u201d There will be some rejection.<\/p>\n<p>You and I were in a meeting, not long ago, with Ron Hutchcraft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Ron\u2019s a broadcaster; he\u2019s a graduate of Moody Bible Institute; he\u2019s an evangelist. I was getting ready to preach a sermon on how we will be persecuted if we share our faith with others. I asked Ron for advice. He said, \u201cTell people to pray\u201d\u2014what he calls\u2014\u201cthe three-open prayer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> \u201cThree-open prayer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I said, \u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The three-open prayer is something you pray every day: \u201cGod, would You open a door for me in a relationship with somebody I have, who\u2019s a non-Christian? Open a door.\u201d By that, \u201cWould You open a channel in our conversation, where I can just naturally and comfortably, say, \u2018Do you know what\u2019s made a difference in my life?\u2019\u2014where I can share my own story; where I can talk about my relationship with You in a comfortable way.\u201d \u201cLord, would You open a door?\u201d\u2014that\u2019s the first open.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The second open is: \u201cLord, would You open their heart?\u201d Because no matter how eloquently you share what you have to share, it takes God opening the heart of another person for the gospel to be understood and believed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>And then, the third open is: \u201cLord, would You open my mouth?\u201d because we might have an open door and an open heart; but until we open our mouth, the gospel has not been shared. You know, Paul says, \u201cFaith comes by hearing\u2014<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cand hearing by the Word of God\u201d\u2014so it\u2019s incumbent on us\u2014\u201cHow beautiful are the feet that bring the good news,\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cand then share that good news with others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a good resolution. [Laughter] I had forgotten my Easter resolution, from two decades ago; but it\u2019s a good resolution for 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> It is a good resolution!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> And what were those three opens again?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Would you pray that God:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>would give you an open door?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>that He would give you an open heart in the person you\u2019re sharing with?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>and then, would you pray that He would open your mouth to share?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[Studio]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That\u2019s Bob Lepine, sharing the gospel with us and, also, reminding us how easy it is to share the gospel with others.<\/p>\n<p>You know, if there was something Bob was saying in there that got you to thinking\u2014and you\u2019re just wondering about your own life and wanting to know Jesus more\u2014we have some information on our website.
