A guy wearing jeans and sneakers walked out on the stage, and he made an announcement that changed the world. I\u2019m talking about Steve Jobs; he said, \u201cToday\u2019s the day we reinvent the phone.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd on that January 2007 day, he introduced this device that, all of a sudden\u2014<em>pre<\/em>-that-date, everything was: \u201cOkay, I\u2019ve got an entertainment device. I\u2019ve got a game console. I\u2019ve got social media plugged into a wall; and then, I\u2019ve got my phone,\u201d\u2014they had like four devices; all of a sudden, now, it was <em>one<\/em> device; and it was in their back pocket. By 2012\u2014in just <em>5 years<\/em>\u2014America crossed that 50 percent mark; and now, the <em>majority<\/em> of young people had social media in their pocket. It just changed communication; it changed entertainment; it changed <em>everything! <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd parenting, all of a sudden, got a lot more difficult as we\u2019re trying to navigate this world of: \u201cOkay, what\u2019s healthy with this? How can I become screen-wise?\u201d One of the best things to do is not just slap on a bunch of rules; but to connect with them, and talk with them, and engage them in meaningful conversation about these issues so that they, someday, can make these decisions on their own.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, where we want to help you pursue the relationships that matter most. And yet, just last week, we were talking about: \u201cWhat would it be like to be a parent <em>today<\/em>?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You talk about overwhelmed!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> We talk to so many parents, who are overwhelmed, and are looking for answers on: \u201cHow do I manage this screen time thing?\u201d \u201cHow do I manage phones?\u201d \u201cHow do I manage gaming?\u201d So many parents feel overwhelmed with the task, and they don\u2019t know where to turn.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes, and I think when we\u2019re overwhelmed, there\u2019s a tendency to either give up\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014or hyper-control. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And we\u2019ve done both! [Laughing] I think, often, my default has been to just throw up my hands and give up; and yours is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh, yes! I go into the rule mode, like, \u201c<em>We are never doing this again!\u201d <\/em>I think parents do waver one way or the other. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve talked to so many parents; especially, I know\/I\u2019m thinking of a family with seven kids. They\u2019re all in that teenage era.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Talk about overwhelmed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And all of their kids are wanting phones. They\u2019re trying to manage that; and they feel like, \u201cI can\u2019t even manage it anymore, so I hope they\u2019re managing it.\u201d And that\u2019s their answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And every parent\u2019s like us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> They\u2019re like, \u201cSomebody, please help us!\u201d [Laughter] And we\u2019ve got Jonathan McKee back with us today, who has\/you really <em>devoted <\/em>your life to helping parents\/helping kids understand the digital world we live in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst of all, I\u2019ll say, \u201cWelcome back to FamilyLife in Orlando, Florida.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTell us this: \u201cWhy did you get into this area?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019ve been in youth ministry for 30 years. And working with young people, this was one of those areas\u2014I mean, young people always love entertainment media; they always love communicating with each other\u2014man, I\u2019ll tell you, from when I first started working in youth ministry, it was pagers; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> It was like: \u201cYo, I\u2019m getting paged from my friend. Can I use your phone?\u201d \u201cI\u2019m getting paged; I need to use your phone\u201d; [Laughter] you know? And they pull up their green pager: \u201cSee, look! They put \u2018911.\u2019 That means it\u2019s important! I\u2019ve got to call.\u201d And they call: \u201cYo, what\u2019s up, girl?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then the cell phones came out. When cell phones first came out\u2014the first ones\u2014it wasn\u2019t texting; it was just all talking. They would sit there; and they had, you know, this cell phone that they could talk with each other. And those who didn\u2019t have a cell phone would be like, \u201cCan I borrow your cell phone so I can return this page?\u201d; you know? So that came out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut then, all of a sudden, when texting came out, oh, my goodness! Remember the parenting world then? At that time, I\u2019m working with teenagers; and parents are coming to me, and they\u2019re going, \u201cJonathan, what do I do? My kid just hit four thousand texts last month, and I got this bill for <em>this<\/em>!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Remember before\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> That was our era.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Remember that? That was <em>before <\/em>they had mastered the whole <em>free texting<\/em> and all of this. Parents were freaking out; and meanwhile, kids were like downloading on their little Mp3 players\u2014you know?\u2014songs and they\u2019re downloading inappropriate stuff. Parents were constantly coming to me with these questions: \u201cWhat should they download? What should they not download?\u201d \u201cYou seem to understand this a little more\u2026\u201d and stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just started kind of teaching it; because I was raising my kids, also, through it. I was going through the same stuff and, you know, failing miserably! Usually, my seminars were like, \u201cHere are seven things <em>not <\/em>to do; okay?\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cthat I\u2019ve already done.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u201cI learned this!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u201cHere are the things I\u2019ve done that will guarantee your kids will be messed up!\u201d; [Laughter] you know? And that just kind of grew to be always researching.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll tell you, the whole world changed in 2007\/January of 2007. Do you just say, \u2018No, you can\u2019t have that device in your back pocket?\u2014in your bedroom at night?\u2019\u201d I mean, these are the questions of parenting today. I\u2019m just trying to help, as best I can, to say: \u201cHey, here\u2019s what\u2019s research is showing\u2026\u201d \u201cHere\u2019s what a lot of parents are saying works\u2026\u201d And I constantly want to put tools in parents\u2019 hands that create conversations,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u2014because that\u2019s really what we\u2019re talking about today as we\u2019re trying to navigate this world of: \u201cOkay, what\u2019s healthy with this? And then, <em>A Teen\u2019s Guide to Face-to-Face Connections in a Screen-to-Screen World.<\/em> <em>Great<\/em> title, by the way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> There you go!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You know, how do we have real\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And you wrote that <em>with<\/em> your daughter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes, he wrote that one with Alyssa; and you\u2019ve got three kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut okay; so you know, we\u2019re handing this device to a child\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014with really very little mentoring, just like, \u201cOkay, here you go!\u201d\u2014and not understanding\/nobody\u2019s telling us: \u201cDo you know what you just handed to your son or daughter? It has the potential for amazing good\u201d\u2014right? There\u2019s all kinds of good\u2014\u201cbut evil.\u201d You even talk about the creepy dude, sitting in his basement, that may be reaching out to your kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTalk about some of those dangers; because we don\u2019t understand, as a parent, what we\u2019re handing them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> I think it is a perfect storm, because we\u2019re seeing all kinds of variables that we\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> seen before. The first is we\u2019re seeing that <em>never <\/em>have this many screens and social media been in our kids\u2019 back pockets. So it\u2019s right there with them all the time\u2014it\u2019s at school; it\u2019s at home; it\u2019s in the bathroom; it\u2019s in a field!\u2014it doesn\u2019t matter; they\u2019ve got it with them. They\u2019ve got social media right in their back pocket. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn addition to that, self-esteem has never been so low. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Where does that come from? Why is self-esteem so bad right now? What\u2019s happening?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> So that\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> segue to talk about the effect that social media\u2019s having on young people. I mean, it is, across the charts right now, crazy how\/I mean, anxiety\u2019s at an all-time high; depression\u2019s at an all-time high; suicides, more than ever before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, I found it amazing\u2014you say in your book, there\u2019s a correlation between 2012\u2014right?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes, absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014and the social media and our phones.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> All of this has gone up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> We\u2019ve seen suicides spike. We\u2019ve seen\/as a matter of fact, just before COVID, one in five adolescent girls experienced a major depressive episode at some point during 2018. That was an 84 percent increase during the past decade. I mean, that\u2019s no small number. A lot of people were scratching their heads about that. There are some experts, who are saying, \u201cHey, watch screen time! You\u2019ve got to watch screen time. They\u2019re having a screen in their pocket!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd there\u2019s so much debate that I\u2019ve got throw respect out there for two researchers, Dr. Jean Twenge and Dr. Jonathan Haidt. The two of them were like: \u201cOkay; obviously, there\u2019s so much research out there about screens and screen time. Let\u2019s find out what we all agree on.\u201d And this is fascinating! If you\u2019re in the research world especially, this is very fascinating; because basically, in short, you\u2019ve got all kind of parents going, \u201cHey! I need to start watching how much time my kids are video gaming\u201d; right? \u201cMy daughter\u2019s spending <em>so much <\/em>time watching Netflix<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> that she\u2019s watching entire <em>seasons <\/em>of shows in one day!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThese two researchers said, \u201cLet\u2019s see; is it affecting us?\u201d And that\u2019s the question they asked. Basically, they said, \u201cWhat do we agree on?\u201d And this is fascinating; the researchers came up with <em>two<\/em> things they absolutely agree on. The first thing they agree on was: hands down, we are in an unprecedented mental health crisis right now; it\u2019s worse than it\u2019s ever been before. That\u2019s one thing they all agreed on; you know? Well, one of the other things they couldn\u2019t agree on was, \u201cWell, what\u2019s the \u2018Why?\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGuess what? The second thing they agreed on was this: if you look at all of screen time, and try to cast some blame, the evidence is really weak and inconsistent. But if you narrow the study down to <em>just <\/em>social media, especially young girls, the data is <em>consistent <\/em>and very conclusive. The amount of social media time someone spends affects their mental health <em>big time<\/em>!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> When we talk about a child\u2019s self-esteem\u2014and a child with poor self-esteem is more vulnerable\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014to a predator\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014what does that look like? Walk us through some of the things we need to be aware of.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes; this is one of those things where I\u2019ll give you just a snapshot of some of these things, because it is a perfect storm of opportunity for predators right now. You\u2019ve got more phones in kids\u2019 pockets; they\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> been feeling so low about themselves; and the one other element that we\u2019ve got to talk about is the fact that right now, eight out of ten young people want to be some kind of social media <em>influencer<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Eight out of ten?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Eight out of ten. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And what does that mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Most studies showed 79-86 percent want to be an influencer in some way. They want to be an Insta-celeb; they want to have a YouTube channel; they want to have an Instagram account, where they show other people how to put on makeup. These are some of the common things you see: <em>eight <\/em>out of ten! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it\u2019s funny\u2014I talked to my friend, Julie; she\u2019s a teacher for third graders\u2014she said, \u201cJonathan, when I read that number, I had no argument whatsoever.\u201d She said, \u201cIn third grade, we used to do this thing called \u2018Star of the Week,\u2019 where we highlight a kid for the week. They would have a poster with pictures of their family and their dog. They would kind of come in; [they\u2019d] bring their dog in for show-and-tell. They would say what they want to be when they grow up.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd she said, \u201cIt\u2019s funny. Beforehand, whenever it was, \u2018What do you want to be when you grow up?\u2019 it was always like: \u2018I want to be <em>a nurse<\/em>!\u2019 \u2018I want to be a <em>policeman<\/em>!\u2019 \u2018I want to be a <em>dolphin <\/em>trainer!\u2019; you know?\u2014all of these fun things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> And she said, \u201cNow, hands-down, eight out of ten young people: \u2018I want to be a <em>YouTuber<\/em>.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014in third grade?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u2014third grade. We\u2019re starting to <em>see<\/em> a lot of this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the thing that\u2019s happening because of this\u2014let\u2019s go back to this perfect storm\u2014is that is changing the way young people navigate social media; because now, they <em>need <\/em>more followers. They <em>need <\/em>more likes, and they need more followers; so they\u2019re being very care-free about who\u2019s following them, because being an influencer is all about having as <em>many <\/em>followers as possible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThink about this: you\u2019ve got kids, walking around with a device in their pocket, feeling bad about themselves, letting anybody follow them; because they\u2019ve got to have more followers. Predators are <em>loving<\/em> this world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Predators are <em>loving<\/em> it, because kids are trying <em>so hard <\/em>to gain friends\u2014and posting everything about themselves\u2014and predators don\u2019t have to be in their proverbial white van anymore, parked by the playground. They just sit at home and just look; they\u2019ve got everything they want on the screens. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd this is one of those realities that\u2019s affecting\u2014I was talking with youth workers about this\u2014and they were saying, \u201cYou know, Jonathan, this has become such an issue that, when we go on trips with young people now, if we\u2019re staying at hotels, we have to have a chaperone in every room. We\u2019ve had chaperones sleep by the doors; kids are trying to sneak out at night to meet somebody they just met in that city\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u2014\u201ca stranger.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is one of those times where parents need to ask themselves, \u201cAm I equipping my kids to recognize predatory behavior?\u201d Now, we need to talk about this stuff; and that\u2019s why, in something like this <em>Teen\u2019s Guide to Face-to-Face Connections in a Screen-to-Screen World, <\/em>we spent a chapter where my daughter and I laid out: \u201cHere\u2019s some predatory behavior; be on the lookout for this.\u201d We need to talk to our kids about this stuff! We need to engage them in these important conversations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Teach our audience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Predator behavior\u2014if you\u2019ve got young people, who are feeling bad about themselves\u2014one of the simple things to tell young people to look out for is for people giving excessive compliments and offering gifts and this and that. Sometimes, you get these people, who are like, \u201cWow! I\u2019m sorry you\u2019re struggling with your parents like that. I did, too. I tell you: I feel just like you! I don\u2019t know why they wouldn\u2019t trust you; you\u2019re so great!\u201d Almost watching out for those excessive compliments.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And of course, you\u2019re going to be drawn to that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Who wouldn\u2019t?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cThat\u2019s a wonderful compliment\u201d; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Predators\u2014one of the obvious ones is trying to find out little facts about your personal information\u2014the school you go to; and exactly what neighborhood you live in; and stuff, which sadly, most predators don\u2019t even need to ask that stuff, because it\u2019s right there on their posts. Our kids are posting a lot of that stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPredators sometimes make these promises of exciting, stress-free life, custom-tailored to that person. It's amazing how, in my <em>Parenting Generation Screen<\/em> book, I did a whole chapter on predators. I told stories that I hear, sadly, at the end of my parenting workshops. A parent will come up to me and say, \u201cOkay, so let me tell you about my daughter. She was talking to this guy all night long; and the next thing you know, she\u2019s going to meet this guy. Come to find out\u2014he said he was a high school kid\u2014and he wasn\u2019t a high school kid,\u201d you know? I hear these stories <em>all <\/em>the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> That\u2019s every parent\u2019s nightmare!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes; it happens <em>so frequently <\/em>you\u2019d be <em>shocked<\/em>. I mean, most of your police departments have entire divisions just focused on this. They\u2019ll come in; they\u2019ll grab the phone; and they\u2019ll tell the parents, honestly: \u201cYes, we\u2019ll try to catch them. We\u2019ll keep posing like we\u2019re your daughter, and we\u2019ll try to lure them out; but very rarely\u2026These guys are usually working 15 conversations at once.\u201d It\u2019s really scary when you see this, but that\u2019s why I kind of lay out some of these precautions to look for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd by the way, this isn\u2019t just in social media. For those of us, who have young kids, who like gaming, a lot of games are online games, where there are other people in the \u201croom.\u201d I have a friend, who said, \u201cMan, I was gaming with my nephew; and as we were gaming, this one guy was just kind of making these kinds of sexual comments. And he starts asking these boys some questions and stuff.\u201d He\/the uncle goes, \u201cHey, man! How old are you?\u201d And the guy disappears.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Gone!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Gone, just like that. And, literally, there are guys out there doing some of these behaviors. We need to talk to our kids and help them become <em>aware<\/em> of some of these behaviors.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> So when we sit down with our kids\u2014and we\u2019re like, \u201cHey, I want to talk about this,\u201d\u2014I hear, \u201cUgggghh!\u201d; you know? Is there a way to talk about the precautions that we can take?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019m not trying to give a shameless plug [for] my <em>Teen\u2019s Guide<\/em> book, but the whole reason I wrote this book\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u2014is I wanted to put in the hands of parents something that they can\u2014not just throw at their kids and say, \u201c<em>Read this!\u201d<\/em>\u2014but something that would actually start dialogue about this important topic. So when they read a chapter like that, the best thing a parent can do is say, \u201cHey, read this chapter on predators, and let\u2019s go to breakfast next week; let\u2019s talk about it.\u201d I put discussion questions at the end of the chapter so that the parent can ask. You\u2019re not just sitting there, lecturing. Besides, most parents are like, \u201cI have <em>no idea <\/em>what to say!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> You know, they\u2019ve got to Google<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> it or something. I want to put a tool in their hands so they can dialogue with their kids about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; and as I\u2019ve read it, you know, you do such a good job of helping parents connect, dialogue, have a conversation; but at the same time, there have to be some rules. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou even just mentioned a woman, or a mom, will come up to you after a parent seminar and say, \u201cYou know, I found my daughter\u2019s talking all night.\u201d Okay; so talk about the phone all night. Is that one of those rules, as a parent, you just lay down the law? I mean, you have a conversation; but you say, \u201cI\u2019m not going to budge on this one.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes; you know what\u2019s funny? I was doing an interview once, where somebody said, \u201cOkay, Jonathan; if you could only have one rule today for kids\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cone rule today.,,\u201d And I was thinking, \u201cOh, man! What?\u2014no phone!\u201d No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Hey, you know what? We\u2019ll be nicer: three; give us three.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Well, you know what? I\u2019ll keep it simple.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> I\u2019m going to just say the one; because literally, hands-down, the thing I said was, \u201cNo devices in the bedroom at bedtime.\u201d And I say, \u201cdevices,\u201d not just phones;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u2014because guess what? There\u2019s that family iPad<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> that you forgot; there\u2019s that old iTouch<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> that they had that you forgot they had. They can still download apps on and have social media. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou kind of, as a parent, need to be shrewd; and remember to: \u201cHey, no <em>devices<\/em> in the bedroom.\u201d And maybe, remember some of those old devices; because that\u2019s one of those things, where I find most of those questions I get from parents after a parent workshop, have that common denominator of: \u201cOkay, my daughter was on social media all night,\u201d \u201cMy kid was gaming all night.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlmost every bullying story, the parent would be like, \u201cMy kid is hearing these onslaughts and these insults <em>all night long<\/em>! It affected his sleep, and his studies the next day, and everything.\u201d Sometimes, I would actually hear a parent say, \u201cSo my 12-year-old was hearing these onslaughts on social media all night long!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<ul><li>\n\t\t\t\t\tAnd right there, I went, \u201cDing, ding, ding!\u201d Three dings right there: 12-year-old\u2014okay? They gave their 12-year-old a smartphone when\u2014last show, what did we talk about?\u2014we talked about what age most experts are saying, \u201cWait to give your kid a phone [until] high school\/freshman year of high school.\u201d Waiting on age is a <em>huge<\/em> thing.\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t<\/ul><ul><li>\n\t\t\t\t\tAnd \u201con social media\u201d; a ding! They had to lie about their age to be on social media. You can\u2019t even be on social media until you\u2019re age 13, because of COPPA, the FTC\u2019s Child Online Privacy Protection Act, which says that Instagram<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, TikTok<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014name it!\u2014Twitter<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> or any of these\u2014they\u2019re not allowed to collect data from anyone under 13. So you\u2019ve got 11-\/12-year-olds lying about their age to be on social media. \n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t<\/ul><ul><li>\n\t\t\t\t\tAnd then, they have this device in their bedroom all night long. \n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t<\/ul><p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s three things right there that parents could wait a little bit to give their kid that device; don\u2019t let them on social media until they don\u2019t have to <em>lie<\/em> about their age about it\u2014that\u2019s 13 or up\u2014and then, \u201cHey, guess what? We\u2019re going to provide a free service for you. As Mom and Dad, we\u2019re going to charge your phone for you at night; we\u2019re going to do that for you. Don\u2019t worry, there\u2019s no fee for this. We\u2019re going to do that every night for you, and give you a fresh little device in the morning. \u2018Here you go!\u2019\u201d And you put it in your master closet; you might even want to put that right next to your bedside. And then, take a light bulb and crush it on the floor right next to you there; [Laughter] so that when your kids\u2014\u201cGaaaaahhh!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo; I mean they <em>love <\/em>their devices, and we\u2019ve got to talk with them about this stuff. Some of these rules can be very helpful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Now, how do you talk\u2014I\u2019m thinking there\u2019s a parent out there, thinking, \u201cOkay, first of all, my son\u2019s 12; my daughter\u2019s 11. I gave them a phone;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cnow, I\u2019ve got to take it away.\u201d Or a parent is thinking, \u201cI have <em>tried <\/em>to say, \u2018No.\u2019 I <em>can\u2019t<\/em> win this argument, because all of their friends have it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow do you put down the foot and say: \u201cYou\u2019re not going to have a phone,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re not going to have a phone in your room at night either\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> You know, I think one of the <em>best<\/em> things you can do in that moment is not try to answer that question in the moment. For me, I remember thinking, \u201cYou know, I\u2019ve got this!\u201d I would tell my wife that: \u201cI got this!\u201d I might as well have just told her: \u201cI\u2019m an idiot! [Laughter] I\u2019m going to just say the first thing on my mind instead of really thinking and praying about it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s one of the things I really talk about throughout the book: is trying to kind of delay\u2014and by delay, I don\u2019t mean you <em>never<\/em> answer it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u2014but sit there and say, \u201cHey, I want to research this. I want to pray about this. I want to think about this.\u201d That \u201cConnection before correction\u201d really is: \u201cHey, tell me what you feel about it. What are the pressures you\u2019re feeling? Let\u2019s think about this; let\u2019s pray about this; let\u2019s read about this; and then, let\u2019s make a decision.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2019s one of those things I do in <em>Parenting Generation Screen<\/em>; I say, \u201cTalk about it,\u201d and then I say, \u201cDelay it for this meeting you\u2019ll have later.\u201d And then, at the end of the book, I actually have a chapter talking about this pizza meeting,\u00a0 this meeting where you go out for pizza; and you say, \u201cOkay, we\u2019ve talked about this; we\u2019ve prayed about this; we\u2019ve thought about this. Here are the rules we are going to have\u201d; and you lay out those rules. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it <em>starts<\/em> with those conversations, where we <em>listen<\/em> to them. We\u2019ve heard what they said; we <em>empathize<\/em> with them, because those conversations are the things they\u2019re going to remember more than any rule we\u2019ve ever given them. Those conversations are the things they\u2019re going to remember when they\u2019re in that college dorm some day, and they\u2019re making that decision for themselves. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; and at the end of the day, as a parent, we\u2019ve got to realize our \u201cNo,\u201d is for their <em>best<\/em>, just like God\u2019s \u201cNo,\u201d to us. We don\u2019t always understand; but we know, now, we can trust Him because He wants the best for us. That\u2019s what we want as a parent; and so we have to say, \u201cNo,\u201d sometimes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You have undoubtedly heard it said, \u201cWith great power comes great responsibility.\u201d And what we have to recognize, as parents, is that, when our kids have access to a screen and to the internet, they have access to great power. The question is: \u201cCan we help them be ready for that? Can we help them, at a young age, know how to navigate that power?\u2014how to exercise responsibility?\u201d This takes coaching and mentoring from us as parents. Honestly, most of us need help; because we didn\u2019t get screens handed to us when we became teenagers. They didn\u2019t exist back in the day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why I think a book like the one Jonathan McKee has written can be so helpful for us as parents. I\u2019m talking about Steve Jobs; he said, \u201cToday\u2019s the day we reinvent the phone.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd on that January 2007 day, he introduced this device that, all of a sudden\u2014<em>pre<\/em>-that-date, everything was: \u201cOkay, I\u2019ve got an entertainment device. I\u2019ve got a game console. I\u2019ve got social media plugged into a wall; and then, I\u2019ve got my phone,\u201d\u2014they had like four devices; all of a sudden, now, it was <em>one<\/em> device; and it was in their back pocket. By 2012\u2014in just <em>5 years<\/em>\u2014America crossed that 50 percent mark; and now, the <em>majority<\/em> of young people had social media in their pocket. It just changed communication; it changed entertainment; it changed <em>everything! <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd parenting, all of a sudden, got a lot more difficult as we\u2019re trying to navigate this world of: \u201cOkay, what\u2019s healthy with this? And yet, just last week, we were talking about: \u201cWhat would it be like to be a parent <em>today<\/em>?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You talk about overwhelmed!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> We talk to so many parents, who are overwhelmed, and are looking for answers on: \u201cHow do I manage this screen time thing?\u201d \u201cHow do I manage phones?\u201d \u201cHow do I manage gaming?\u201d So many parents feel overwhelmed with the task, and they don\u2019t know where to turn.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes, and I think when we\u2019re overwhelmed, there\u2019s a tendency to either give up\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014or hyper-control. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And we\u2019ve done both! [Laughing] I think, often, my default has been to just throw up my hands and give up; and yours is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh, yes! I go into the rule mode, like, \u201c<em>We are never doing this again!\u201d <\/em>I think parents do waver one way or the other. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve talked to so many parents; especially, I know\/I\u2019m thinking of a family with seven kids. They\u2019re all in that teenage era.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Talk about overwhelmed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And all of their kids are wanting phones. They\u2019re trying to manage that; and they feel like, \u201cI can\u2019t even manage it anymore, so I hope they\u2019re managing it.\u201d And that\u2019s their answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And every parent\u2019s like us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> They\u2019re like, \u201cSomebody, please help us!\u201d [Laughter] And we\u2019ve got Jonathan McKee back with us today, who has\/you really <em>devoted <\/em>your life to helping parents\/helping kids understand the digital world we live in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst of all, I\u2019ll say, \u201cWelcome back to FamilyLife in Orlando, Florida.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTell us this: \u201cWhy did you get into this area?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019ve been in youth ministry for 30 years. And working with young people, this was one of those areas\u2014I mean, young people always love entertainment media; they always love communicating with each other\u2014man, I\u2019ll tell you, from when I first started working in youth ministry, it was pagers; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> It was like: \u201cYo, I\u2019m getting paged from my friend. Can I use your phone?\u201d \u201cI\u2019m getting paged; I need to use your phone\u201d; [Laughter] you know? And they pull up their green pager: \u201cSee, look! They put \u2018911.\u2019 That means it\u2019s important! I\u2019ve got to call.\u201d And they call: \u201cYo, what\u2019s up, girl?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then the cell phones came out. When cell phones first came out\u2014the first ones\u2014it wasn\u2019t texting; it was just all talking. They would sit there; and they had, you know, this cell phone that they could talk with each other. And those who didn\u2019t have a cell phone would be like, \u201cCan I borrow your cell phone so I can return this page?\u201d; you know? So that came out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut then, all of a sudden, when texting came out, oh, my goodness! Remember the parenting world then? At that time, I\u2019m working with teenagers; and parents are coming to me, and they\u2019re going, \u201cJonathan, what do I do? My kid just hit four thousand texts last month, and I got this bill for <em>this<\/em>!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Remember before\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> That was our era.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Remember that? That was <em>before <\/em>they had mastered the whole <em>free texting<\/em> and all of this. Parents were freaking out; and meanwhile, kids were like downloading on their little Mp3 players\u2014you know?\u2014songs and they\u2019re downloading inappropriate stuff. Parents were constantly coming to me with these questions: \u201cWhat should they download? What should they not download?\u201d \u201cYou seem to understand this a little more\u2026\u201d and stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just started kind of teaching it; because I was raising my kids, also, through it. I was going through the same stuff and, you know, failing miserably! Usually, my seminars were like, \u201cHere are seven things <em>not <\/em>to do; okay?\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cthat I\u2019ve already done.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u201cI learned this!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u201cHere are the things I\u2019ve done that will guarantee your kids will be messed up!\u201d; [Laughter] you know? And that just kind of grew to be always researching.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll tell you, the whole world changed in 2007\/January of 2007. Do you just say, \u2018No, you can\u2019t have that device in your back pocket?\u2014in your bedroom at night?\u2019\u201d I mean, these are the questions of parenting today. I\u2019m just trying to help, as best I can, to say: \u201cHey, here\u2019s what\u2019s research is showing\u2026\u201d \u201cHere\u2019s what a lot of parents are saying works\u2026\u201d And I constantly want to put tools in parents\u2019 hands that create conversations,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u2014because that\u2019s really what we\u2019re talking about today as we\u2019re trying to navigate this world of: \u201cOkay, what\u2019s healthy with this? And then, <em>A Teen\u2019s Guide to Face-to-Face Connections in a Screen-to-Screen World.<\/em> <em>Great<\/em> title, by the way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> There you go!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You know, how do we have real\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And you wrote that <em>with<\/em> your daughter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes, he wrote that one with Alyssa; and you\u2019ve got three kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut okay; so you know, we\u2019re handing this device to a child\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014with really very little mentoring, just like, \u201cOkay, here you go!\u201d\u2014and not understanding\/nobody\u2019s telling us: \u201cDo you know what you just handed to your son or daughter? It has the potential for amazing good\u201d\u2014right? There\u2019s all kinds of good\u2014\u201cbut evil.\u201d You even talk about the creepy dude, sitting in his basement, that may be reaching out to your kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTalk about some of those dangers; because we don\u2019t understand, as a parent, what we\u2019re handing them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> I think it is a perfect storm, because we\u2019re seeing all kinds of variables that we\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> seen before. The first is we\u2019re seeing that <em>never <\/em>have this many screens and social media been in our kids\u2019 back pockets. So it\u2019s right there with them all the time\u2014it\u2019s at school; it\u2019s at home; it\u2019s in the bathroom; it\u2019s in a field!\u2014it doesn\u2019t matter; they\u2019ve got it with them. They\u2019ve got social media right in their back pocket. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn addition to that, self-esteem has never been so low. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Where does that come from? Why is self-esteem so bad right now? What\u2019s happening?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> So that\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> segue to talk about the effect that social media\u2019s having on young people. I mean, it is, across the charts right now, crazy how\/I mean, anxiety\u2019s at an all-time high; depression\u2019s at an all-time high; suicides, more than ever before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, I found it amazing\u2014you say in your book, there\u2019s a correlation between 2012\u2014right?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes, absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014and the social media and our phones.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> All of this has gone up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> We\u2019ve seen suicides spike. We\u2019ve seen\/as a matter of fact, just before COVID, one in five adolescent girls experienced a major depressive episode at some point during 2018. That was an 84 percent increase during the past decade. I mean, that\u2019s no small number. A lot of people were scratching their heads about that. There are some experts, who are saying, \u201cHey, watch screen time! You\u2019ve got to watch screen time. They\u2019re having a screen in their pocket!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd there\u2019s so much debate that I\u2019ve got throw respect out there for two researchers, Dr. Jean Twenge and Dr. Jonathan Haidt. The two of them were like: \u201cOkay; obviously, there\u2019s so much research out there about screens and screen time. Let\u2019s find out what we all agree on.\u201d And this is fascinating! If you\u2019re in the research world especially, this is very fascinating; because basically, in short, you\u2019ve got all kind of parents going, \u201cHey! I need to start watching how much time my kids are video gaming\u201d; right? \u201cMy daughter\u2019s spending <em>so much <\/em>time watching Netflix<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> that she\u2019s watching entire <em>seasons <\/em>of shows in one day!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThese two researchers said, \u201cLet\u2019s see; is it affecting us?\u201d And that\u2019s the question they asked. Basically, they said, \u201cWhat do we agree on?\u201d And this is fascinating; the researchers came up with <em>two<\/em> things they absolutely agree on. The first thing they agree on was: hands down, we are in an unprecedented mental health crisis right now; it\u2019s worse than it\u2019s ever been before. That\u2019s one thing they all agreed on; you know? Well, one of the other things they couldn\u2019t agree on was, \u201cWell, what\u2019s the \u2018Why?\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGuess what? The second thing they agreed on was this: if you look at all of screen time, and try to cast some blame, the evidence is really weak and inconsistent. But if you narrow the study down to <em>just <\/em>social media, especially young girls, the data is <em>consistent <\/em>and very conclusive. The amount of social media time someone spends affects their mental health <em>big time<\/em>!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> When we talk about a child\u2019s self-esteem\u2014and a child with poor self-esteem is more vulnerable\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014to a predator\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014what does that look like? Walk us through some of the things we need to be aware of.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes; this is one of those things where I\u2019ll give you just a snapshot of some of these things, because it is a perfect storm of opportunity for predators right now. You\u2019ve got more phones in kids\u2019 pockets; they\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> been feeling so low about themselves; and the one other element that we\u2019ve got to talk about is the fact that right now, eight out of ten young people want to be some kind of social media <em>influencer<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Eight out of ten?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Eight out of ten. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And what does that mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Most studies showed 79-86 percent want to be an influencer in some way. They want to be an Insta-celeb; they want to have a YouTube channel; they want to have an Instagram account, where they show other people how to put on makeup. These are some of the common things you see: <em>eight <\/em>out of ten! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it\u2019s funny\u2014I talked to my friend, Julie; she\u2019s a teacher for third graders\u2014she said, \u201cJonathan, when I read that number, I had no argument whatsoever.\u201d She said, \u201cIn third grade, we used to do this thing called \u2018Star of the Week,\u2019 where we highlight a kid for the week. They would have a poster with pictures of their family and their dog. They would kind of come in; [they\u2019d] bring their dog in for show-and-tell. They would say what they want to be when they grow up.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd she said, \u201cIt\u2019s funny. Beforehand, whenever it was, \u2018What do you want to be when you grow up?\u2019 it was always like: \u2018I want to be <em>a nurse<\/em>!\u2019 \u2018I want to be a <em>policeman<\/em>!\u2019 \u2018I want to be a <em>dolphin <\/em>trainer!\u2019; you know?\u2014all of these fun things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> And she said, \u201cNow, hands-down, eight out of ten young people: \u2018I want to be a <em>YouTuber<\/em>.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014in third grade?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u2014third grade. We\u2019re starting to <em>see<\/em> a lot of this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the thing that\u2019s happening because of this\u2014let\u2019s go back to this perfect storm\u2014is that is changing the way young people navigate social media; because now, they <em>need <\/em>more followers. They <em>need <\/em>more likes, and they need more followers; so they\u2019re being very care-free about who\u2019s following them, because being an influencer is all about having as <em>many <\/em>followers as possible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThink about this: you\u2019ve got kids, walking around with a device in their pocket, feeling bad about themselves, letting anybody follow them; because they\u2019ve got to have more followers. Predators are <em>loving<\/em> this world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Predators are <em>loving<\/em> it, because kids are trying <em>so hard <\/em>to gain friends\u2014and posting everything about themselves\u2014and predators don\u2019t have to be in their proverbial white van anymore, parked by the playground. They just sit at home and just look; they\u2019ve got everything they want on the screens. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd this is one of those realities that\u2019s affecting\u2014I was talking with youth workers about this\u2014and they were saying, \u201cYou know, Jonathan, this has become such an issue that, when we go on trips with young people now, if we\u2019re staying at hotels, we have to have a chaperone in every room. We\u2019ve had chaperones sleep by the doors; kids are trying to sneak out at night to meet somebody they just met in that city\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u2014\u201ca stranger.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is one of those times where parents need to ask themselves, \u201cAm I equipping my kids to recognize predatory behavior?\u201d Now, we need to talk about this stuff; and that\u2019s why, in something like this <em>Teen\u2019s Guide to Face-to-Face Connections in a Screen-to-Screen World, <\/em>we spent a chapter where my daughter and I laid out: \u201cHere\u2019s some predatory behavior; be on the lookout for this.\u201d We need to talk to our kids about this stuff! We need to engage them in these important conversations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Teach our audience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Predator behavior\u2014if you\u2019ve got young people, who are feeling bad about themselves\u2014one of the simple things to tell young people to look out for is for people giving excessive compliments and offering gifts and this and that. Sometimes, you get these people, who are like, \u201cWow! I\u2019m sorry you\u2019re struggling with your parents like that. I did, too. I tell you: I feel just like you! I don\u2019t know why they wouldn\u2019t trust you; you\u2019re so great!\u201d Almost watching out for those excessive compliments.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And of course, you\u2019re going to be drawn to that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Who wouldn\u2019t?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cThat\u2019s a wonderful compliment\u201d; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Predators\u2014one of the obvious ones is trying to find out little facts about your personal information\u2014the school you go to; and exactly what neighborhood you live in; and stuff, which sadly, most predators don\u2019t even need to ask that stuff, because it\u2019s right there on their posts. Our kids are posting a lot of that stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPredators sometimes make these promises of exciting, stress-free life, custom-tailored to that person. It's amazing how, in my <em>Parenting Generation Screen<\/em> book, I did a whole chapter on predators. I told stories that I hear, sadly, at the end of my parenting workshops. A parent will come up to me and say, \u201cOkay, so let me tell you about my daughter. She was talking to this guy all night long; and the next thing you know, she\u2019s going to meet this guy. Come to find out\u2014he said he was a high school kid\u2014and he wasn\u2019t a high school kid,\u201d you know? I hear these stories <em>all <\/em>the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> That\u2019s every parent\u2019s nightmare!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes; it happens <em>so frequently <\/em>you\u2019d be <em>shocked<\/em>. I mean, most of your police departments have entire divisions just focused on this. They\u2019ll come in; they\u2019ll grab the phone; and they\u2019ll tell the parents, honestly: \u201cYes, we\u2019ll try to catch them. We\u2019ll keep posing like we\u2019re your daughter, and we\u2019ll try to lure them out; but very rarely\u2026These guys are usually working 15 conversations at once.\u201d It\u2019s really scary when you see this, but that\u2019s why I kind of lay out some of these precautions to look for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd by the way, this isn\u2019t just in social media. For those of us, who have young kids, who like gaming, a lot of games are online games, where there are other people in the \u201croom.\u201d I have a friend, who said, \u201cMan, I was gaming with my nephew; and as we were gaming, this one guy was just kind of making these kinds of sexual comments. And he starts asking these boys some questions and stuff.\u201d He\/the uncle goes, \u201cHey, man! How old are you?\u201d And the guy disappears.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Gone!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Gone, just like that. And, literally, there are guys out there doing some of these behaviors. We need to talk to our kids and help them become <em>aware<\/em> of some of these behaviors.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> So when we sit down with our kids\u2014and we\u2019re like, \u201cHey, I want to talk about this,\u201d\u2014I hear, \u201cUgggghh!\u201d; you know? Is there a way to talk about the precautions that we can take?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019m not trying to give a shameless plug [for] my <em>Teen\u2019s Guide<\/em> book, but the whole reason I wrote this book\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u2014is I wanted to put in the hands of parents something that they can\u2014not just throw at their kids and say, \u201c<em>Read this!\u201d<\/em>\u2014but something that would actually start dialogue about this important topic. So when they read a chapter like that, the best thing a parent can do is say, \u201cHey, read this chapter on predators, and let\u2019s go to breakfast next week; let\u2019s talk about it.\u201d I put discussion questions at the end of the chapter so that the parent can ask. You\u2019re not just sitting there, lecturing. Besides, most parents are like, \u201cI have <em>no idea <\/em>what to say!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> You know, they\u2019ve got to Google<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> it or something. I want to put a tool in their hands so they can dialogue with their kids about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; and as I\u2019ve read it, you know, you do such a good job of helping parents connect, dialogue, have a conversation; but at the same time, there have to be some rules. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou even just mentioned a woman, or a mom, will come up to you after a parent seminar and say, \u201cYou know, I found my daughter\u2019s talking all night.\u201d Okay; so talk about the phone all night. Is that one of those rules, as a parent, you just lay down the law? I mean, you have a conversation; but you say, \u201cI\u2019m not going to budge on this one.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes; you know what\u2019s funny? I was doing an interview once, where somebody said, \u201cOkay, Jonathan; if you could only have one rule today for kids\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cone rule today.,,\u201d And I was thinking, \u201cOh, man! What?\u2014no phone!\u201d No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Hey, you know what? We\u2019ll be nicer: three; give us three.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Well, you know what? I\u2019ll keep it simple.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> I\u2019m going to just say the one; because literally, hands-down, the thing I said was, \u201cNo devices in the bedroom at bedtime.\u201d And I say, \u201cdevices,\u201d not just phones;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u2014because guess what? There\u2019s that family iPad<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> that you forgot; there\u2019s that old iTouch<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> that they had that you forgot they had. They can still download apps on and have social media. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou kind of, as a parent, need to be shrewd; and remember to: \u201cHey, no <em>devices<\/em> in the bedroom.\u201d And maybe, remember some of those old devices; because that\u2019s one of those things, where I find most of those questions I get from parents after a parent workshop, have that common denominator of: \u201cOkay, my daughter was on social media all night,\u201d \u201cMy kid was gaming all night.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlmost every bullying story, the parent would be like, \u201cMy kid is hearing these onslaughts and these insults <em>all night long<\/em>! It affected his sleep, and his studies the next day, and everything.\u201d Sometimes, I would actually hear a parent say, \u201cSo my 12-year-old was hearing these onslaughts on social media all night long!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<ul><li>\n\t\t\t\t\tAnd right there, I went, \u201cDing, ding, ding!\u201d Three dings right there: 12-year-old\u2014okay? They gave their 12-year-old a smartphone when\u2014last show, what did we talk about?\u2014we talked about what age most experts are saying, \u201cWait to give your kid a phone [until] high school\/freshman year of high school.\u201d Waiting on age is a <em>huge<\/em> thing.\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t<\/ul><ul><li>\n\t\t\t\t\tAnd \u201con social media\u201d; a ding! They had to lie about their age to be on social media. You can\u2019t even be on social media until you\u2019re age 13, because of COPPA, the FTC\u2019s Child Online Privacy Protection Act, which says that Instagram<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, TikTok<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014name it!\u2014Twitter<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> or any of these\u2014they\u2019re not allowed to collect data from anyone under 13. So you\u2019ve got 11-\/12-year-olds lying about their age to be on social media. \n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t<\/ul><ul><li>\n\t\t\t\t\tAnd then, they have this device in their bedroom all night long. \n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t<\/ul><p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s three things right there that parents could wait a little bit to give their kid that device; don\u2019t let them on social media until they don\u2019t have to <em>lie<\/em> about their age about it\u2014that\u2019s 13 or up\u2014and then, \u201cHey, guess what? We\u2019re going to provide a free service for you. As Mom and Dad, we\u2019re going to charge your phone for you at night; we\u2019re going to do that for you. Don\u2019t worry, there\u2019s no fee for this. We\u2019re going to do that every night for you, and give you a fresh little device in the morning. \u2018Here you go!\u2019\u201d And you put it in your master closet; you might even want to put that right next to your bedside. And then, take a light bulb and crush it on the floor right next to you there; [Laughter] so that when your kids\u2014\u201cGaaaaahhh!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo; I mean they <em>love <\/em>their devices, and we\u2019ve got to talk with them about this stuff. Some of these rules can be very helpful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Now, how do you talk\u2014I\u2019m thinking there\u2019s a parent out there, thinking, \u201cOkay, first of all, my son\u2019s 12; my daughter\u2019s 11. I gave them a phone;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cnow, I\u2019ve got to take it away.\u201d Or a parent is thinking, \u201cI have <em>tried <\/em>to say, \u2018No.\u2019 I <em>can\u2019t<\/em> win this argument, because all of their friends have it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow do you put down the foot and say: \u201cYou\u2019re not going to have a phone,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re not going to have a phone in your room at night either\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> You know, I think one of the <em>best<\/em> things you can do in that moment is not try to answer that question in the moment. For me, I remember thinking, \u201cYou know, I\u2019ve got this!\u201d I would tell my wife that: \u201cI got this!\u201d I might as well have just told her: \u201cI\u2019m an idiot! [Laughter] I\u2019m going to just say the first thing on my mind instead of really thinking and praying about it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s one of the things I really talk about throughout the book: is trying to kind of delay\u2014and by delay, I don\u2019t mean you <em>never<\/em> answer it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jonathan:<\/strong> \u2014but sit there and say, \u201cHey, I want to research this. I want to pray about this. I want to think about this.\u201d That \u201cConnection before correction\u201d really is: \u201cHey, tell me what you feel about it. What are the pressures you\u2019re feeling? Let\u2019s think about this; let\u2019s pray about this; let\u2019s read about this; and then, let\u2019s make a decision.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2019s one of those things I do in <em>Parenting Generation Screen<\/em>; I say, \u201cTalk about it,\u201d and then I say, \u201cDelay it for this meeting you\u2019ll have later.\u201d And then, at the end of the book, I actually have a chapter talking about this pizza meeting,\u00a0 this meeting where you go out for pizza; and you say, \u201cOkay, we\u2019ve talked about this; we\u2019ve prayed about this; we\u2019ve thought about this. Here are the rules we are going to have\u201d; and you lay out those rules. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it <em>starts<\/em> with those conversations, where we <em>listen<\/em> to them. We\u2019ve heard what they said; we <em>empathize<\/em> with them, because those conversations are the things they\u2019re going to remember more than any rule we\u2019ve ever given them. Those conversations are the things they\u2019re going to remember when they\u2019re in that college dorm some day, and they\u2019re making that decision for themselves. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; and at the end of the day, as a parent, we\u2019ve got to realize our \u201cNo,\u201d is for their <em>best<\/em>, just like God\u2019s \u201cNo,\u201d to us. We don\u2019t always understand; but we know, now, we can trust Him because He wants the best for us. That\u2019s what we want as a parent; and so we have to say, \u201cNo,\u201d sometimes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You have undoubtedly heard it said, \u201cWith great power comes great responsibility.\u201d And what we have to recognize, as parents, is that, when our kids have access to a screen and to the internet, they have access to great power. The question is: \u201cCan we help them be ready for that? Can we help them, at a young age, know how to navigate that power?\u2014how to exercise responsibility?\u201d This takes coaching and mentoring from us as parents. Honestly, most of us need help; because we didn\u2019t get screens handed to us when we became teenagers. They didn\u2019t exist back in the day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why I think a book like the one Jonathan McKee has written can be so helpful for us as parents.
