He has purpose behind humor. Michael Jr., welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. We\u2019re so glad to have you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Michael:<\/strong> Wow. Thanks so much for having me here, man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExcept, it is a little weird, being in the middle of your conversation just now on that\u2014I told you I was going for it\u2014I was like, \u201cWait a second. Is it over? What\u2019s happening? [Laughter] Wait; don\u2019t you know the end? You guys worked it out?\u201d Wow; that is so\u2014ten years, you were done: .5\u2014wow! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; and I thought we were a 9.5; I was so clueless. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Again, in that moment, I didn\u2019t know what was going to happen. Yet, it\u2019s the moment\u2014just as you\u2019ve shared in your book and in your comedy\u2014that God uses the setbacks to set us up for our punchline. I mean, you\u2019ve told that everywhere you go. You\u2019ve even told that in our church\u2014as we did <em>Funny How Marriage Works: A Date Night for Couples<\/em>\u2014where you brought the funny, and we brought the marriage. It was just a beautiful, beautiful night. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I love what you do in your book; I love what you do in your life. It\u2019s literally\u2014I\u2019ve never heard a comedian talk about how you talk about the punchline\u2014that\u2019s your whole\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014again, tell us what the punchline means, because it\u2019s about pain in your purpose or pain being your purpose? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026pain being your purpose,\u201d so your purpose is to bring pain to people\u2014wow; wow\u2014[Laughter]\u2014that\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> name if you\u2019re a wrestler; yes. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is a lot of parallels in comedy and life. One\u2014for example, I\u2019ll give you a fresh one\u2014in comedy, everyone has to deal with them; I\u2019ve dealt with them before\u2014you have a heckler. What is a heckler? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, I was in Fort Wayne, Indiana, driving through Detroit, heading down to Fort Wayne to do a show one day. This was years and years ago, and I\u2019m on stage. This is probably one of the worst heckle I\u2019ve ever received. I\u2019m on stage, doing my comedy; and I get heckled by this dude in the back of the room with more twang than I can explain [imitating the person]: \u201cMichael Jr., I was wondering, \u2018Why do all black people look alike?\u2019\u201d That\u2019s what he said for real. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> And the whole crowd freezes; it\u2019s like a mostly white audience. They freeze; they don\u2019t know what I\u2019m going to do\u2014get mad\/throw a chair\u2014they don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe heckles me, and I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m going to say. This is all happening in fractions of a second. I mean, these thoughts are going through my mind: \u201cWhat am I going to say?\u201d \u201cWhat am I going to do?\u201d \u201cHow is this going to work out?\u201d When I said these words, I didn\u2019t even think them; when I said these words, I was hearing them for the first time. He was like: \u201cMichael Jr., why do all black people look alike?\u201d I was like, \u201cWe don\u2019t all look alike. You just got to cut the eye holes in your sheet a lot bigger.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Boom! Listen, the place exploded in laughter. The dude, who said it to me, stood up on his chair and gave me a standing ovation with the rest of the room. It was an amazing moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere were a few things that took place in that moment. Instead of addressing pain with pain\u2014because clearly that dude was in some pain\u2014I just showed up with my gift. Just like God has given us all gifts, I just took a breath and delivered what I felt like I should deliver. I responded as opposed to reacted. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe other thing that happened is I just recognized that it was a heckler, and a heckler is part of what you have to deal with as a comedian. In life, when you are in pursuit of your purpose, you are going to have hecklers. The hecklers are people around you who don\u2019t necessarily want you to succeed; they are speaking negativity into what it is you are trying to accomplish. Unfortunately, more times than not, that heckler isn\u2019t even exterior. That heckler is your own communication with yourself, saying: \u201cYou\u2019re not going to be able to do it,\u201d \u201cYour marriage is not going to last,\u201d \u201cYour parents\u2019 marriage didn\u2019t last, so why would yours?\u201d You have to know how to address the heckler. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Bible actually says: \u201cCast down every impure thought that is not from God.\u201d That\u2019s a tool in which you use to address the heckler. A greater tool would be to follow it up with God\u2019s Word that says\u2014any of God\u2019s Word that counters whatever the heckler just said to you\u2014but in life, there is going to be hecklers, and you have to know how to address them. If you don\u2019t have any hecklers at all, that just means you\u2019re not walking in your purpose; because if you are walking in your purpose, I guarantee somebody\/someone, in some way, is going to try to stop you. In fact, take that as <em>confirmation<\/em> that you are walking in the right direction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You know, it\u2019s easy to think that, people that are somewhat successful\u2014and you\u2019re\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014like Michael. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014and you\u2019re <em>really<\/em> successful\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; you\u2019re a movie star. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014do you ever hear heckler voices in your head now? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Absolutely; I hear them all the time, but I know\/I address them immediately. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> How do you do that?\u2014because I would guess, almost everybody has a heckler. I would say that can be old voices in our head\u2014that can be Satan\u2014that can be old wounds. How do you deal with that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> What I do immediately\u2014so let\u2019s say something like I\u2019m hearing a voice say, \u201cNobody is going to like your book,\u201d\u2014because I graduated high school, reading at a fourth grade level. Now, I\u2019m writing a book; so a heckler might jump out and be like, \u201cNobody is going read this book. He can\u2019t even write.\u201d I always assume it\u2019s Satan or somebody who works for him\u2014then, I\u2019ll follow it up with God\u2019s Word; I\u2019ll say: \u201cI\u2019m more than a conqueror,\u201d \u201cI can do all things through Christ,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s just natural. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have to <em>address<\/em> that scenario; because what has happened is\u2014you\u2019ve probably let some negativity in an ear-gate or an eye-gate somewhere: it might have been a movie you watched; it might have been some radio or something, where you heard a phrase\u2014now, the enemy is <em>using<\/em> what you saw against you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It reminds of Romans 12:2. Paul says, \u201cDon\u2019t be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI tell you\u2014talk about the heckler\u2014I had that in my mind for <em>years<\/em>, of like, \u201cYou can\u2019t do it. You\u2019re dumb; you\u2019re ugly; you can\u2019t do this.\u201d I would just go there with it. It created this neurological pathway\/a highway in my head that I would just normally: \u201cOh, that\u2019s just where I go, down that road and down that path.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven in my marriage, I would critique Dave in my head; and I would think, \u201cOh, if he would only do this...\u201d And when God\/when I was reading that [Romans 12:2]\u2014and I felt like, \u201cNo, Lord, I need You to transform my mind; I need You to renew it,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s like it\u2019s hard at first; it takes practice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI like that; you are committing Scripture over it, and then you are <em>choosing<\/em> to take a new pathway.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> At first, it can seem a little like, \u201cUgh, I\u2019ve never done this\u201d; but after a while, that old highway\/that old pathway has weeds on it. It\u2019s not as easy to go back to it, but I love the practicality of what you are saying. Also, just the heckler\u2014we all have that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> In fact, let me do something. Watch with your entire family and enjoy it, because there is so much negativity and hard stuff going on in the world. We want to get as much laughter as we can to people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You know what? Things have just hit me when you were talking about the hecklers\u2014and I read the same thing in your book\u2014is how much Scripture you just quoted from memory as you talked about it. Ann did the same thing. I thought, \u201cSo many of us, when we have hecklers, we don\u2019t know Scripture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cWe haven\u2019t stored it away; we haven\u2019t memorized it, so we can\u2019t counteract it. We don\u2019t even know what our identity is in Christ because we\u2019ve never really read it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re quoting Philippians 4:13; you\u2019re quoting\u2014I mean, just boom, boom, boom\u2014it\u2019s like: \u201cLook at what you\u2019ve stored away so that the Holy Spirit can bring it up in that moment.\u201d I have hecklers; we all have hecklers. We may take the thought captive\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t2 Corinthians 10\/take that thought captive\u2014but what do we replace it with? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes! That\u2019s it right there; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You spoke <em>back<\/em> to the heckler; turned the whole room around. We often don\u2019t speak back, and we don\u2019t know what to do with it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know there is a song that has been around quite a while now, a worship song that I would play in our worship band at church. Every time I hear the line, I tear up. I\u2019m back there, on the bass, playing\u2014I don\u2019t sing; they don\u2019t let me sing\u2014but you know, I\u2019m playing the line that goes [singing]: \u201cI am surrounded by the arms of the Father. I am surrounded by songs\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes; stop; stop. We get it\u2014stop\u2014we get it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Anyway, it\u2019s just an identity song: \u201cI\u2019m no longer a slave to fear. I am a child of God.\u201d It\u2019s one of those moments, where you have to say that to <em>yourself<\/em> to remind yourself: \u201cThe heckler is wrong; the truth is I\u2019m a child of God. That is my identity, and I can walk out in freedom.\u201d I can even laugh at a joke, because I\u2019m <em>free<\/em> to be able to enjoy humor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> That is so good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I have a good friend, whose teenage daughter was really struggling with anxiety and depression. She was hearing that heckler <em>constantly<\/em> in her mind, and the girl was brave enough to tell her mom what was going on in her head. The mom just started putting Scripture on her mirrors\u2014just a sticky note; you know?\u2014she was surprised her daughter didn\u2019t take it away. Pretty soon, her daughter started adding the Scripture to it to the point that, when the mom walked into the room, the entire mirror was full of Scripture. She just saw this little place for her face, and that was it. All around her face was Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe [the mother] said, \u201cWe just discount the power of the Word of God and discount how it affects our kids, and our spouse, and our family. It\u2019s powerful.\u201d I mean, Jesus did it; that\u2019s how he got rid of the heckler\u2014you know?\u2014when Satan tempted Him in the desert. So it\u2019s big; it\u2019s good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> That is so great, Ann. I don\u2019t want to talk to you much on this show, because you always bring tears to my eyes; [Laughter] yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> You\u2019re awesome. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Dave brings tears to my eyes for different reasons. I\u2019m just going to say that\u2014[Laughter]\u2014especially when you start singing the way you did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019m not going to sing anymore; [Laughter] but there are so many great stories in the book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother one I loved\u2014and it connects to the father\u2019s sort of voice; I don\u2019t remember the guy\u2019s name\u2014your buddy that had the nice cars that he sort of picked up from some friends. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> [Laughter] That\u2019s a nice way to put it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> My dad was the only dad in the neighborhood\u2014like he was the one\u2014and he used to\/he would never buy me stuff, like I mentioned; he would never just give me stuff. My friends\u2019 parents were always just buying them stuff and giving it to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m in high school, and I\u2019m like, \u201cYou never buy me anything. Why don\u2019t you just buy me stuff?\u201d He said to me, \u201cUnfortunately, you\u2019re going to see what is going to happen to them one day\u201d; that\u2019s what he said. I was like, \u201cI see what\u2019s happening to them. They are getting all the girls\u2014that\u2019s what\u2019s happening\u2014they\u2019ve got the best clothes. They\u2019ve got Gazelle<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>s; they got Kangol<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> hats. I\u2019m sitting here with this\/some old\u2026\u201d\u2014anyway. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne day, one of my friend rolls up in a brand-new car\u2014Duane\u2014it\u2019s a really nice car\/really nice car. Duane was a dude, who always had the latest things. He was the first person in our neighborhood who had a pair of black tennis shoes. Black tennis shoes didn\u2019t exist until this dude showed up with a pair of black Reeboks<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. They were so awesome! I\u2019d never even <em>heard<\/em> of black Reeboks before. He is sitting here with black Reeboks; and I\u2019m like, \u201cMan, that is awesome.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe pulls up in a T-top Trans-Am. I\u2019m leaning over the Trans-Am, talking to him; and it is a brand-new car. He\u2019s like, \u201cHey, man, you want to go to Kalamazoo with me? I\u2019m going to go pick up some girls.\u201d I wanted to go; this car is <em>nice<\/em>. Right before I get ready to think about getting in, I could hear my dad\u2019s voice say to me, \u201cYou\u2019re going to see what\u2019s going to happen to him one day. Don\u2019t get too close to him. Watch what you are doing.\u201d I hear his voice out of nowhere; and for whatever reason, I was like, \u201cUh, no, man; I\u2019m not going to go.\u201d I had to go cut some grass instead; because I had to cut the grass in the backyard, which is <em>miserable<\/em>; because every time you pull the string, the thing never starts the first time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe pulls off, burning rubber like he\u2019s all cool and stuff. That\u2019s my boy; we were like best friends in high school. This dude takes off. I go cut grass; I\u2019ve got to pull the string like 86 times\/whatever. I finish cutting the grass. I\u2019m sitting there, and my dad comes home. He turns on the news, like he always does. We\u2019re sitting there, watching TV. There is some lady on the news reporting about an accident that took place on the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t131 Freeway. I\u2019m sitting here, watching, mad; because I can\u2019t go nowhere; I can\u2019t do anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said it was a Trans-Am. I\u2019m like, \u201cTrans-am; that\u2019s what my friend had.\u201d By the way, the Trans-Am was stolen, too, completely stolen. So now, I\u2019m kind of tuned in a little bit; because it\u2019s a black and red Trans-Am, just like Duane had. My heart is kind of beating; like I know, \u201cThis is probably not Duane.\u201d They show the car wreck; and they say, \u201cThe car hit a pole, doing over 100 miles an hour. The driver was thrown out of the T-tops. The car flipped four times and landed on top of the driver.\u201d At this point, I\u2019m like, \u201cPlease don\u2019t be Duane! Please don\u2019t be Duane! Please, please, please don\u2019t be\u2026\u201d Then I remember the news lady saying, \u201cThis is Carol Jones\u201d\u2014or something\u2014\u201csigning off from the 131 Freeway.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy heart is just pounding, pounding because they never said a name. The last camera shot\u2014I will <em>never<\/em> forget this\u2014the very last camera shot was on a black Reebok tennis shoe. I was <em>done<\/em>; I knew it was him. I said to my dad\/I said, \u201cDad, it\u2019s him.\u201d We get in the car, and we go to check on him. Listen, I know\u2014like I know\u2014like I <em>know<\/em>, had I got in that car with him, there is no way I was going to survive; but because, for whatever reason, in that moment, I was able to hear my father\u2019s voice\u2014in the midst of some excitement\/in what seemed like was going to be fun\u2014I was able to hear my father\u2019s voice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are people out there probably listening. There is a lot of excitement; there\u2019s a lot of fun; a lot of confusion; there is pandemic talk; there is this; there is that. \u201cCan you be still for a <em>moment<\/em> and hear the Father\u2019s voice before you make that choice? If so, I think you\u2019ll have a pretty awesome story on the other side of it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; and I think, you know, as I read that in your book\u2014you just did it again\u2014how you drive home the priority and the critical fact that you\u2019ve got to listen to the Father\u2019s voice. I mean, I\u2019m thinking there is a husband, listening right now\u2014who is thinking about an affair, or going to a website, or signing a contract\u2014and he has been hearing the still, small voice\/maybe, it\u2019s a shout of the Father saying, \u201cDon\u2019t do it. You know where this\u2014don\u2019t.\u201d I mean, you did not get in that car because of a nudge from your father\u2019s voice that saved your life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> This could save your marriage\/could save your legacy. I don\u2019t know what God is saying. Just the fact that you are listening to this broadcast, and you\u2019re hearing this story\u2014this is God speaking\u2014and He is saying, \u201cDon\u2019t do it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes, don\u2019t get caught up in doing the math. If God says, \u201cDon\u2019t do it,\u201d\u2014and you don\u2019t even know why\/like you can\u2019t even figure out why you wouldn\u2019t do it\u2014don\u2019t even try to figure out why. Like there is no\u2014I mean, first of all, I didn\u2019t even know Jesus when I was about to get in that car; I had no idea who God was\u2014none at all. I thought God was somebody that you bring up after somebody sneezed\u2014like that\u2019s all I thought\u2014like, \u201cGod bless you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo don\u2019t try to do the math on: \u201cWell, if I don\u2019t do it like God is saying, well, this will happen\u2026\u201d \u201c\u2026this will happen\u2026\u201d \u201c\u2026this will happen.,,\u201d No, don\u2019t even do that math; just trust and <em>watch<\/em> what takes place. Like whatever that thing is\u2014walk away from that deal, or just decide not to meet up with that person, whatever that is\u2014listen to His voice and watch what will take place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019m sitting here, beside my wife of 40 years; because of the nudge of God telling me walk away from a relationship with a girl I was going to marry in college. I thought she was the one, and then God kept saying, \u201cNope; nope.\u201d I kept saying, \u201cI don\u2019t care what You think; I know better.\u201d When I finally realized God is right\u2014I mean, I would have never met you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We\u2019d never be here. There wouldn\u2019t be a legacy; I wouldn\u2019t be in ministry. I\u2019d probably be a divorced man today; you know? I would have copied what I saw in my own home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, that\u2019s how powerful God\u2019s voice is. He loves us; He has a better plan for us than we have. It\u2019s just the fact of having the courage to say, \u201cI\u2019m going to do the right thing. I\u2019m going to do what He called me to do.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Well, the thing that really struck me with both of you\u2014with Michael, you; and you, Dave\u2014is the power of a dad\u2019s voice\/the power of a father\u2019s voice. Then, if you put a godly man with that\u2014like your dad was a great man\u2014then, for you two men, Michael and Dave, and you put Jesus in your lives; so you have the power of the Holy Spirit\u2014it\u2019s like you are super powers; you know? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> That\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> way to put it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> You\u2019re such strong men that hear God\u2019s voice\/the Father\u2019s voice\u2014so that makes your voice in the home with your kids\/with your wife, where you work\u2014like it\u2019s such a powerful voice. I think it\u2019s easy for us to feel like, \u201cOh, our voices don\u2019t really matter. Our kids are like, \u2018Whatever.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut they really do have so much power, and they have so much influence in your homes. I look at Dave\u2014and I\u2019ve always been jealous\u2014I\u2019ve told him, like, \u201cMan, I\u2019m <em>jealous<\/em> of power that you have over our kids\u2019 lives. You talk; and they are just like, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s good, Dad,\u2019\u201d where they kind of give me the eye roll thing when they were younger. Man, I just think it\u2019s important for men to hear the power that you carry. Then, when you listen to God\u2019s voice on top of that, it\u2019s your super power. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> It\u2019s the Father speaking through some dads. Let me say this, too, in case someone is listening, like, \u201cI don\u2019t know how to hear God\u2019s voice.\u201d You\u2019re hearing voices all the time; you just don\u2019t know which one might be God\u2019s. There are three ways to <em>know<\/em> that it\u2019s God talking to you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one, it will always line up with His Word\u2014whatever that thing is\/whatever you are supposed to do\u2014it will always line up with His Word. Number two, it will be confirmed with one or two other believers\u2014like-minded people; not What\u2019s-his-name?\/not What\u2019s-her-name?\u2014some like-minded, believers. Number three, you will feel a peace about it. If you\u2019ve got those three things, <em>jump<\/em>; and watch what God will do. That\u2019s what I do. If I\u2019ve got those three things, I don\u2019t do any more math; there is no more math to do. I just run, and jump, and do it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ll see in the book, there are some things that I\u2019ve done that were really kind of out there. Looking back at it, it\u2019s because I had all of that, even though I didn\u2019t know the math on it. I just jumped: moving to New York; I moved to New York City on New Year\u2019s Eve night. I got off stage\u2014in Royal Oak, Michigan, Mark Ridley\u2019s Comedy Castle\u2014got in my 1997 Chevy Lumina, start driving to New York City, all my possessions in my car. My car got stolen; everything about me was just gone, all of a sudden; but God completely worked it out; because I just jumped, because I knew I heard His voice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStop doing the math; God\u2019s math is different. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; I\u2019ve just got to say: \u201cGet Michael\u2019s book.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Seriously\u2014<em>Funny How Life Works<\/em>\u2014there are so many stories like this that have life-changing truths. You\u2019ve got to read them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> This would be a fun book to read with your family, like read it with your kid before bed\u2014one chapter a night\u2014your kids would <em>love<\/em> it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> And the proceeds\u2014I didn\u2019t mention this part; did I?\u2014all of the proceeds, because there is so much stuff going on in the world, it\u2019s going to a black family in America. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Do you know who that family is? I\u2019m Ann Wilson.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And I\u2019m Dave Wilson, and you can find us at FamilyLifeToday.com or on our FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> app.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> What\u2019s the toughest, hardest moment of our marriage? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I would say our ten-year anniversary. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; I knew you were going to answer exactly that because, in that dark moment, when we both thought it was over, God shows up\u2014and not only saves our marriage\u2014but then says, \u201cI actually want to use that moment to help you discover your purpose is to help other marriages.\u201d Here we are\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014to use our pain in the past. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014sitting right here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe get to interview Michael Jr., who many people would know as a comedian; but if you have ever listen to him, or read his new book, <em>Funny How Life Works<\/em>, you discover he is more than just a funny guy. He has purpose behind humor. Michael Jr., welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. We\u2019re so glad to have you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Michael:<\/strong> Wow. Thanks so much for having me here, man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExcept, it is a little weird, being in the middle of your conversation just now on that\u2014I told you I was going for it\u2014I was like, \u201cWait a second. Is it over? What\u2019s happening? [Laughter] Wait; don\u2019t you know the end? You guys worked it out?\u201d Wow; that is so\u2014ten years, you were done: .5\u2014wow! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; and I thought we were a 9.5; I was so clueless. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Again, in that moment, I didn\u2019t know what was going to happen. Yet, it\u2019s the moment\u2014just as you\u2019ve shared in your book and in your comedy\u2014that God uses the setbacks to set us up for our punchline. I mean, you\u2019ve told that everywhere you go. You\u2019ve even told that in our church\u2014as we did <em>Funny How Marriage Works: A Date Night for Couples<\/em>\u2014where you brought the funny, and we brought the marriage. It was just a beautiful, beautiful night. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I love what you do in your book; I love what you do in your life. It\u2019s literally\u2014I\u2019ve never heard a comedian talk about how you talk about the punchline\u2014that\u2019s your whole\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014again, tell us what the punchline means, because it\u2019s about pain in your purpose or pain being your purpose? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026pain being your purpose,\u201d so your purpose is to bring pain to people\u2014wow; wow\u2014[Laughter]\u2014that\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> name if you\u2019re a wrestler; yes. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is a lot of parallels in comedy and life. One\u2014for example, I\u2019ll give you a fresh one\u2014in comedy, everyone has to deal with them; I\u2019ve dealt with them before\u2014you have a heckler. What is a heckler? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, I was in Fort Wayne, Indiana, driving through Detroit, heading down to Fort Wayne to do a show one day. This was years and years ago, and I\u2019m on stage. This is probably one of the worst heckle I\u2019ve ever received. I\u2019m on stage, doing my comedy; and I get heckled by this dude in the back of the room with more twang than I can explain [imitating the person]: \u201cMichael Jr., I was wondering, \u2018Why do all black people look alike?\u2019\u201d That\u2019s what he said for real. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> And the whole crowd freezes; it\u2019s like a mostly white audience. They freeze; they don\u2019t know what I\u2019m going to do\u2014get mad\/throw a chair\u2014they don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe heckles me, and I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m going to say. This is all happening in fractions of a second. I mean, these thoughts are going through my mind: \u201cWhat am I going to say?\u201d \u201cWhat am I going to do?\u201d \u201cHow is this going to work out?\u201d When I said these words, I didn\u2019t even think them; when I said these words, I was hearing them for the first time. He was like: \u201cMichael Jr., why do all black people look alike?\u201d I was like, \u201cWe don\u2019t all look alike. You just got to cut the eye holes in your sheet a lot bigger.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Boom! Listen, the place exploded in laughter. The dude, who said it to me, stood up on his chair and gave me a standing ovation with the rest of the room. It was an amazing moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere were a few things that took place in that moment. Instead of addressing pain with pain\u2014because clearly that dude was in some pain\u2014I just showed up with my gift. Just like God has given us all gifts, I just took a breath and delivered what I felt like I should deliver. I responded as opposed to reacted. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe other thing that happened is I just recognized that it was a heckler, and a heckler is part of what you have to deal with as a comedian. In life, when you are in pursuit of your purpose, you are going to have hecklers. The hecklers are people around you who don\u2019t necessarily want you to succeed; they are speaking negativity into what it is you are trying to accomplish. Unfortunately, more times than not, that heckler isn\u2019t even exterior. That heckler is your own communication with yourself, saying: \u201cYou\u2019re not going to be able to do it,\u201d \u201cYour marriage is not going to last,\u201d \u201cYour parents\u2019 marriage didn\u2019t last, so why would yours?\u201d You have to know how to address the heckler. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Bible actually says: \u201cCast down every impure thought that is not from God.\u201d That\u2019s a tool in which you use to address the heckler. A greater tool would be to follow it up with God\u2019s Word that says\u2014any of God\u2019s Word that counters whatever the heckler just said to you\u2014but in life, there is going to be hecklers, and you have to know how to address them. If you don\u2019t have any hecklers at all, that just means you\u2019re not walking in your purpose; because if you are walking in your purpose, I guarantee somebody\/someone, in some way, is going to try to stop you. In fact, take that as <em>confirmation<\/em> that you are walking in the right direction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You know, it\u2019s easy to think that, people that are somewhat successful\u2014and you\u2019re\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014like Michael. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014and you\u2019re <em>really<\/em> successful\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; you\u2019re a movie star. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014do you ever hear heckler voices in your head now? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Absolutely; I hear them all the time, but I know\/I address them immediately. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> How do you do that?\u2014because I would guess, almost everybody has a heckler. I would say that can be old voices in our head\u2014that can be Satan\u2014that can be old wounds. How do you deal with that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> What I do immediately\u2014so let\u2019s say something like I\u2019m hearing a voice say, \u201cNobody is going to like your book,\u201d\u2014because I graduated high school, reading at a fourth grade level. Now, I\u2019m writing a book; so a heckler might jump out and be like, \u201cNobody is going read this book. He can\u2019t even write.\u201d I always assume it\u2019s Satan or somebody who works for him\u2014then, I\u2019ll follow it up with God\u2019s Word; I\u2019ll say: \u201cI\u2019m more than a conqueror,\u201d \u201cI can do all things through Christ,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s just natural. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have to <em>address<\/em> that scenario; because what has happened is\u2014you\u2019ve probably let some negativity in an ear-gate or an eye-gate somewhere: it might have been a movie you watched; it might have been some radio or something, where you heard a phrase\u2014now, the enemy is <em>using<\/em> what you saw against you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It reminds of Romans 12:2. Paul says, \u201cDon\u2019t be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI tell you\u2014talk about the heckler\u2014I had that in my mind for <em>years<\/em>, of like, \u201cYou can\u2019t do it. You\u2019re dumb; you\u2019re ugly; you can\u2019t do this.\u201d I would just go there with it. It created this neurological pathway\/a highway in my head that I would just normally: \u201cOh, that\u2019s just where I go, down that road and down that path.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven in my marriage, I would critique Dave in my head; and I would think, \u201cOh, if he would only do this...\u201d And when God\/when I was reading that [Romans 12:2]\u2014and I felt like, \u201cNo, Lord, I need You to transform my mind; I need You to renew it,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s like it\u2019s hard at first; it takes practice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI like that; you are committing Scripture over it, and then you are <em>choosing<\/em> to take a new pathway.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> At first, it can seem a little like, \u201cUgh, I\u2019ve never done this\u201d; but after a while, that old highway\/that old pathway has weeds on it. It\u2019s not as easy to go back to it, but I love the practicality of what you are saying. Also, just the heckler\u2014we all have that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> In fact, let me do something. Watch with your entire family and enjoy it, because there is so much negativity and hard stuff going on in the world. We want to get as much laughter as we can to people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You know what? Things have just hit me when you were talking about the hecklers\u2014and I read the same thing in your book\u2014is how much Scripture you just quoted from memory as you talked about it. Ann did the same thing. I thought, \u201cSo many of us, when we have hecklers, we don\u2019t know Scripture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cWe haven\u2019t stored it away; we haven\u2019t memorized it, so we can\u2019t counteract it. We don\u2019t even know what our identity is in Christ because we\u2019ve never really read it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re quoting Philippians 4:13; you\u2019re quoting\u2014I mean, just boom, boom, boom\u2014it\u2019s like: \u201cLook at what you\u2019ve stored away so that the Holy Spirit can bring it up in that moment.\u201d I have hecklers; we all have hecklers. We may take the thought captive\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t2 Corinthians 10\/take that thought captive\u2014but what do we replace it with? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes! That\u2019s it right there; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You spoke <em>back<\/em> to the heckler; turned the whole room around. We often don\u2019t speak back, and we don\u2019t know what to do with it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know there is a song that has been around quite a while now, a worship song that I would play in our worship band at church. Every time I hear the line, I tear up. I\u2019m back there, on the bass, playing\u2014I don\u2019t sing; they don\u2019t let me sing\u2014but you know, I\u2019m playing the line that goes [singing]: \u201cI am surrounded by the arms of the Father. I am surrounded by songs\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes; stop; stop. We get it\u2014stop\u2014we get it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Anyway, it\u2019s just an identity song: \u201cI\u2019m no longer a slave to fear. I am a child of God.\u201d It\u2019s one of those moments, where you have to say that to <em>yourself<\/em> to remind yourself: \u201cThe heckler is wrong; the truth is I\u2019m a child of God. That is my identity, and I can walk out in freedom.\u201d I can even laugh at a joke, because I\u2019m <em>free<\/em> to be able to enjoy humor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> That is so good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I have a good friend, whose teenage daughter was really struggling with anxiety and depression. She was hearing that heckler <em>constantly<\/em> in her mind, and the girl was brave enough to tell her mom what was going on in her head. The mom just started putting Scripture on her mirrors\u2014just a sticky note; you know?\u2014she was surprised her daughter didn\u2019t take it away. Pretty soon, her daughter started adding the Scripture to it to the point that, when the mom walked into the room, the entire mirror was full of Scripture. She just saw this little place for her face, and that was it. All around her face was Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe [the mother] said, \u201cWe just discount the power of the Word of God and discount how it affects our kids, and our spouse, and our family. It\u2019s powerful.\u201d I mean, Jesus did it; that\u2019s how he got rid of the heckler\u2014you know?\u2014when Satan tempted Him in the desert. So it\u2019s big; it\u2019s good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> That is so great, Ann. I don\u2019t want to talk to you much on this show, because you always bring tears to my eyes; [Laughter] yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> You\u2019re awesome. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Dave brings tears to my eyes for different reasons. I\u2019m just going to say that\u2014[Laughter]\u2014especially when you start singing the way you did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019m not going to sing anymore; [Laughter] but there are so many great stories in the book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother one I loved\u2014and it connects to the father\u2019s sort of voice; I don\u2019t remember the guy\u2019s name\u2014your buddy that had the nice cars that he sort of picked up from some friends. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> [Laughter] That\u2019s a nice way to put it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> My dad was the only dad in the neighborhood\u2014like he was the one\u2014and he used to\/he would never buy me stuff, like I mentioned; he would never just give me stuff. My friends\u2019 parents were always just buying them stuff and giving it to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m in high school, and I\u2019m like, \u201cYou never buy me anything. Why don\u2019t you just buy me stuff?\u201d He said to me, \u201cUnfortunately, you\u2019re going to see what is going to happen to them one day\u201d; that\u2019s what he said. I was like, \u201cI see what\u2019s happening to them. They are getting all the girls\u2014that\u2019s what\u2019s happening\u2014they\u2019ve got the best clothes. They\u2019ve got Gazelle<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>s; they got Kangol<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> hats. I\u2019m sitting here with this\/some old\u2026\u201d\u2014anyway. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne day, one of my friend rolls up in a brand-new car\u2014Duane\u2014it\u2019s a really nice car\/really nice car. Duane was a dude, who always had the latest things. He was the first person in our neighborhood who had a pair of black tennis shoes. Black tennis shoes didn\u2019t exist until this dude showed up with a pair of black Reeboks<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. They were so awesome! I\u2019d never even <em>heard<\/em> of black Reeboks before. He is sitting here with black Reeboks; and I\u2019m like, \u201cMan, that is awesome.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe pulls up in a T-top Trans-Am. I\u2019m leaning over the Trans-Am, talking to him; and it is a brand-new car. He\u2019s like, \u201cHey, man, you want to go to Kalamazoo with me? I\u2019m going to go pick up some girls.\u201d I wanted to go; this car is <em>nice<\/em>. Right before I get ready to think about getting in, I could hear my dad\u2019s voice say to me, \u201cYou\u2019re going to see what\u2019s going to happen to him one day. Don\u2019t get too close to him. Watch what you are doing.\u201d I hear his voice out of nowhere; and for whatever reason, I was like, \u201cUh, no, man; I\u2019m not going to go.\u201d I had to go cut some grass instead; because I had to cut the grass in the backyard, which is <em>miserable<\/em>; because every time you pull the string, the thing never starts the first time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe pulls off, burning rubber like he\u2019s all cool and stuff. That\u2019s my boy; we were like best friends in high school. This dude takes off. I go cut grass; I\u2019ve got to pull the string like 86 times\/whatever. I finish cutting the grass. I\u2019m sitting there, and my dad comes home. He turns on the news, like he always does. We\u2019re sitting there, watching TV. There is some lady on the news reporting about an accident that took place on the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t131 Freeway. I\u2019m sitting here, watching, mad; because I can\u2019t go nowhere; I can\u2019t do anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said it was a Trans-Am. I\u2019m like, \u201cTrans-am; that\u2019s what my friend had.\u201d By the way, the Trans-Am was stolen, too, completely stolen. So now, I\u2019m kind of tuned in a little bit; because it\u2019s a black and red Trans-Am, just like Duane had. My heart is kind of beating; like I know, \u201cThis is probably not Duane.\u201d They show the car wreck; and they say, \u201cThe car hit a pole, doing over 100 miles an hour. The driver was thrown out of the T-tops. The car flipped four times and landed on top of the driver.\u201d At this point, I\u2019m like, \u201cPlease don\u2019t be Duane! Please don\u2019t be Duane! Please, please, please don\u2019t be\u2026\u201d Then I remember the news lady saying, \u201cThis is Carol Jones\u201d\u2014or something\u2014\u201csigning off from the 131 Freeway.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy heart is just pounding, pounding because they never said a name. The last camera shot\u2014I will <em>never<\/em> forget this\u2014the very last camera shot was on a black Reebok tennis shoe. I was <em>done<\/em>; I knew it was him. I said to my dad\/I said, \u201cDad, it\u2019s him.\u201d We get in the car, and we go to check on him. Listen, I know\u2014like I know\u2014like I <em>know<\/em>, had I got in that car with him, there is no way I was going to survive; but because, for whatever reason, in that moment, I was able to hear my father\u2019s voice\u2014in the midst of some excitement\/in what seemed like was going to be fun\u2014I was able to hear my father\u2019s voice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are people out there probably listening. There is a lot of excitement; there\u2019s a lot of fun; a lot of confusion; there is pandemic talk; there is this; there is that. \u201cCan you be still for a <em>moment<\/em> and hear the Father\u2019s voice before you make that choice? If so, I think you\u2019ll have a pretty awesome story on the other side of it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; and I think, you know, as I read that in your book\u2014you just did it again\u2014how you drive home the priority and the critical fact that you\u2019ve got to listen to the Father\u2019s voice. I mean, I\u2019m thinking there is a husband, listening right now\u2014who is thinking about an affair, or going to a website, or signing a contract\u2014and he has been hearing the still, small voice\/maybe, it\u2019s a shout of the Father saying, \u201cDon\u2019t do it. You know where this\u2014don\u2019t.\u201d I mean, you did not get in that car because of a nudge from your father\u2019s voice that saved your life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> This could save your marriage\/could save your legacy. I don\u2019t know what God is saying. Just the fact that you are listening to this broadcast, and you\u2019re hearing this story\u2014this is God speaking\u2014and He is saying, \u201cDon\u2019t do it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes, don\u2019t get caught up in doing the math. If God says, \u201cDon\u2019t do it,\u201d\u2014and you don\u2019t even know why\/like you can\u2019t even figure out why you wouldn\u2019t do it\u2014don\u2019t even try to figure out why. Like there is no\u2014I mean, first of all, I didn\u2019t even know Jesus when I was about to get in that car; I had no idea who God was\u2014none at all. I thought God was somebody that you bring up after somebody sneezed\u2014like that\u2019s all I thought\u2014like, \u201cGod bless you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo don\u2019t try to do the math on: \u201cWell, if I don\u2019t do it like God is saying, well, this will happen\u2026\u201d \u201c\u2026this will happen\u2026\u201d \u201c\u2026this will happen.,,\u201d No, don\u2019t even do that math; just trust and <em>watch<\/em> what takes place. Like whatever that thing is\u2014walk away from that deal, or just decide not to meet up with that person, whatever that is\u2014listen to His voice and watch what will take place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019m sitting here, beside my wife of 40 years; because of the nudge of God telling me walk away from a relationship with a girl I was going to marry in college. I thought she was the one, and then God kept saying, \u201cNope; nope.\u201d I kept saying, \u201cI don\u2019t care what You think; I know better.\u201d When I finally realized God is right\u2014I mean, I would have never met you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We\u2019d never be here. There wouldn\u2019t be a legacy; I wouldn\u2019t be in ministry. I\u2019d probably be a divorced man today; you know? I would have copied what I saw in my own home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, that\u2019s how powerful God\u2019s voice is. He loves us; He has a better plan for us than we have. It\u2019s just the fact of having the courage to say, \u201cI\u2019m going to do the right thing. I\u2019m going to do what He called me to do.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Well, the thing that really struck me with both of you\u2014with Michael, you; and you, Dave\u2014is the power of a dad\u2019s voice\/the power of a father\u2019s voice. Then, if you put a godly man with that\u2014like your dad was a great man\u2014then, for you two men, Michael and Dave, and you put Jesus in your lives; so you have the power of the Holy Spirit\u2014it\u2019s like you are super powers; you know? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> That\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> way to put it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> You\u2019re such strong men that hear God\u2019s voice\/the Father\u2019s voice\u2014so that makes your voice in the home with your kids\/with your wife, where you work\u2014like it\u2019s such a powerful voice. I think it\u2019s easy for us to feel like, \u201cOh, our voices don\u2019t really matter. Our kids are like, \u2018Whatever.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut they really do have so much power, and they have so much influence in your homes. I look at Dave\u2014and I\u2019ve always been jealous\u2014I\u2019ve told him, like, \u201cMan, I\u2019m <em>jealous<\/em> of power that you have over our kids\u2019 lives. You talk; and they are just like, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s good, Dad,\u2019\u201d where they kind of give me the eye roll thing when they were younger. Man, I just think it\u2019s important for men to hear the power that you carry. Then, when you listen to God\u2019s voice on top of that, it\u2019s your super power. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> It\u2019s the Father speaking through some dads. Let me say this, too, in case someone is listening, like, \u201cI don\u2019t know how to hear God\u2019s voice.\u201d You\u2019re hearing voices all the time; you just don\u2019t know which one might be God\u2019s. There are three ways to <em>know<\/em> that it\u2019s God talking to you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one, it will always line up with His Word\u2014whatever that thing is\/whatever you are supposed to do\u2014it will always line up with His Word. Number two, it will be confirmed with one or two other believers\u2014like-minded people; not What\u2019s-his-name?\/not What\u2019s-her-name?\u2014some like-minded, believers. Number three, you will feel a peace about it. If you\u2019ve got those three things, <em>jump<\/em>; and watch what God will do. That\u2019s what I do. If I\u2019ve got those three things, I don\u2019t do any more math; there is no more math to do. I just run, and jump, and do it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ll see in the book, there are some things that I\u2019ve done that were really kind of out there. Looking back at it, it\u2019s because I had all of that, even though I didn\u2019t know the math on it. I just jumped: moving to New York; I moved to New York City on New Year\u2019s Eve night. I got off stage\u2014in Royal Oak, Michigan, Mark Ridley\u2019s Comedy Castle\u2014got in my 1997 Chevy Lumina, start driving to New York City, all my possessions in my car. My car got stolen; everything about me was just gone, all of a sudden; but God completely worked it out; because I just jumped, because I knew I heard His voice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStop doing the math; God\u2019s math is different. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; I\u2019ve just got to say: \u201cGet Michael\u2019s book.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Seriously\u2014<em>Funny How Life Works<\/em>\u2014there are so many stories like this that have life-changing truths. You\u2019ve got to read them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> This would be a fun book to read with your family, like read it with your kid before bed\u2014one chapter a night\u2014your kids would <em>love<\/em> it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> And the proceeds\u2014I didn\u2019t mention this part; did I?\u2014all of the proceeds, because there is so much stuff going on in the world, it\u2019s going to a black family in America. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Do you know who that family is?
