I\u2019m going to join them.\u201d He said, \u201cHarrell, if you go, I\u2019m going to go.\u201d Here are two Marines and five sailors\u2014began to say goodbye to our 15 other sailors\u2014and we're going to swim to the Philippines, we thought. Here we start.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Was there anything said by the guys you left?\u00a0 Did they say, \u201cThat\u2019s foolish to do that\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed: <\/strong>They did; they thought it was foolish. They said, \u201cThe sharks will get you.\u201d Well, they\u2019ve already gotten a bigger part of us; and there was really no\/seemingly, no advantage to just stay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe left our group; and after an hour or two, then swimming, I saw some debris out at the starboard side, out maybe a couple of hundred yards or so, and a hundred yards ahead of us. I called it to the attention of the others. We watched it for a good while. At first, we thought, \u201cWell, it\u2019s one of our buddies out there\u201d; but then as we got closer, we could tell that it was debris of some kind, not one of ours. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou pray for food: \u201cWhat\u2019s the possibility?\u2014could there be food out there?\u201d We prayed. I know I said, \u201cI tell you what. If you\u2019ll keep going straight, I\u2019m going to swim out and get that. If it\u2019s just a crate, then we\u2019ll bring it in and fasten it onto our others here; but let\u2019s hope and pray that it could be food.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, they thought I was foolish again; because the sharks maybe would get a straggler out there. But, really, I felt a real compelling force that says: \u201cGo for it. Go and see what it might be.\u201d\u00a0 I know, as I swam, and got closer and closer to that crate, I'm praying for food; I'm praying for water\u2014anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I got close enough that I could see those potatoes in that crate, kind of in desperation\u2014I didn't pause to thank the Lord for what I'm about to eat\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but in desperation, I'm making my way to those potatoes. I reached in to get that first potato. Then, as I got a hold of that first potato, kind of in the agony of defeat, all that rotten potato began to squeeze through my fingers. As I kind of squeezed that in despair then, all of a sudden, it was solid potato on the inside. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI often say, \u201cYou know what a rotten potato smells like?\u00a0 I know what they taste like.\u201d\u00a0 To take that potato then, and to peel it with my hands and my teeth\u2014and eat part rotten potato and part solid potato\u2014that was some food that I needed, some starch, and some water in that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I began to peel some of them, then, and fill my dungaree pockets full; and then I began to make my way back, then, to my buddies, with still a lot of potatoes in the crate. They could see that here I\u2019m swimming, with an arm on that crate, and eating something, and swimming. They hollered out: \u201cWhat is it?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cRotten potatoes.\u201d\u00a0 They left the life raft, and they joined me out there. We had a feast. Oftentimes, I talk to young people\/I say, \u201cYou know, we had a picnic and no ants to bother us.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>That\u2019s Ed Harrell who, today, is the last living survivor of the <em>USS Indianapolis<\/em>. He has lived an amazing life\/an amazing life of faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I see a freeway entrance leading us to Southern California. That\u2019s where Christian singer\/songwriter, Jeremy Camp was when he met his first wife. You know who I\u2019m talking about; right? You probably recognize some of his songs: <em>Take You Back<\/em>, <em>Walk by Faith<\/em>, <em>I Still Believe<\/em>. If you\u2019re familiar with his music, you know that his lyrics reveal a heart that\u2019s been broken and a faith that\u2019s been tested and restored. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJeremy\u2019s faith was tested when he married a young lady, who was sick with cancer. He married Melissa Lynn Henning, praying that God would heal her. Here is Jeremy remembering those first few days of their marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>Broadcast] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> With cancer, of course, you have <em>no clue<\/em>; it\u2019s very unpredictable. They were doing\u2014she had ovarian cancer\u2014so it was a very\/and it was called granulosa cell tumor\u2014it\u2019s very rapidly growing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt that point, knowing, \u201cI don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen,\u201d\u2014we both didn\u2019t know what was going to happen\u2014I didn\u2019t care. I knew that I loved her, and I knew that I wanted to be with her, no matter what happened. We formally got engaged; and\/just the journey began, for sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you read 2 Corinthians 5:7\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> Whew!\u2014\u201ccalled to walk by faith and not by sight.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe ended up getting married and went on our honeymoon. On the honeymoon, she was noticing some issues. I opened up the Word of God\u2014called to walk by faith and not by sight\u2014I pulled out a guitar that was in the place we were staying\u2014it was her aunt and uncle\u2019s house they let us stay at in Hawaii; so sweet\u2014and started playing the song: \u201cWill I believe You when You say Your hand will guide my every way?\u00a0 I receive the words You say every moment of every day.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember just going, \u201cHey, am I really going to <em>believe<\/em> what this is saying?\u201d I concluded\u2014on the chorus, of course\u2014just saying, \u201cAlright, I will walk by faith even when I cannot see; because this broken road prepares Your will for me.\u201d\u00a0 Didn\u2019t even know exactly what that meant in the sense of what was going to happen; but I knew that it was, at this point, we were stepping out in faith on what was going to happen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was not long after you got back from your honeymoon that you were in the doctor\u2019s office again. This time, they said, \u201cIt\u2019s not good.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> Yes, we\/so we went in, and the doctor pulled me aside. I went out of the room; I said, \u201cOkay; so what\u2019s going on?\u201d\u00a0 He goes, \u201cWell, the cancer has returned; and it\u2019s spread very rapidly.\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cOkay, what\u2019s the next step?\u00a0 What do we do?\u201d\u00a0 He, literally, said\/he goes, \u201cThere\u2019s nothing else we can do. She has weeks to months to live.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How are you processing\u2014this all-powerful, all-loving God, who you trust and you believe in\u2014and your wife\u2019s deteriorating condition and coming to a point, where you\u2019re going, \u201cI don\u2019t think she\u2019s going to make it\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How are you making sense of that in your own life? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> You know, it\u2019s something that you really have to understand God\u2019s sovereignty, His goodness, His mercy,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> \u2014and His faithfulness in the midst of what we may think is supposed to be. You see, because we always have an idea of what something should be or something should turn out to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy ideal, of course: \u201cHeal. We go out\u2014we have a story of a miracle; we have a story of God\u2019s healing power\u2014and we\u2019re going to share this with the world. I mean, we\u2019re going to be in front of thousands of people, sharing of God\u2019s goodness, singing songs; and she\u2019s going to be there.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have to come to grips with: \u201cGod, are You trustworthy?\u201d\u00a0 That was a question I started having: \u201cCan I really trust You\/really trust You?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You and Melissa were married October 21, 2000; she died February 5, 2001. She lived 100 days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> \u2014in our marriage; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Take us to those last days\u2014because there was a moment in that hospital room that was a pretty amazing moment in the midst of her pain, and suffering, and unconsciousness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014there was a moment; wasn\u2019t there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> Yes, there was. It was five hours before she went to be with the Lord. I remember she stood up out of bed and goes: \u201cIt\u2019s gone!\u00a0 It\u2019s gone!\u201d\u00a0 And I was\/I thought, \u201cOkay, this is just a moment, where she is not really understanding what\u2019s happening.\u201d\u00a0 She looked at <em>me<\/em> directly in the face; and she goes, \u201cJeremy, you have to believe me; it\u2019s gone.\u201d I thought, \u201cShe\u2019s healed!\u201d\u00a0 She laid down and fell asleep; and then, never woke up again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember, when I first heard the words, \u201cShe\u2019s with Jesus now,\u201d I was on the ground, just weeping, in the fetal position, crying out to God\/just saying, \u201cGod, I\u2019m so confused. What just happened in this?\u201d\u00a0 There was worship music playing in the background. I remember God just saying to me, \u201cI want you to stand up and worship Me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad\u2014I remember him helping me up\u2014and we all just started raising our hands for the Lord. It was the most powerful moment in my life. I felt the presence of God so thick; I can\u2019t even explain it: \u201cShe\u2019s with Jesus.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Jeremy singing <em>I Still Believe<\/em>]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Jeremy is still recording and making great music. In fact, that song, <em>I Still Believe<\/em>, was the first song that he wrote after Melissa passed away. Jeremy has remarried; he is now married Adrienne, and they have three kids. He recently founded a ministry called Speaking Louder Ministries, which provides free crusade-style events and comes alongside local churches or missionaries in countries where the gospel needs to be heard. I mean\u2014and this is cool\u2014it\u2019s places like Uganda, and Kyrgyzstan, India, and Ukraine\u2014exciting stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHey, I think I see a destination spot up ahead. It\u2019s time to get out and take a selfie while we listen to Ron Deal talking about summer travel advice for stepfamilies. I have a feeling we are going to run into some emergency warning signs up ahead. I\u2019ll explain more in two minutes. Stay tuned. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Radio Station Break] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Welcome back to <em>FamilyLife This Week<\/em>. I\u2019m Michelle Hill. We\u2019ve been travelling around the world today hearing stories of God\u2019s power in the lives of His children. Have you ever noticed that, when one of His children derails on this journey of life, how God can put up some speed bumps or even detours to get our attention? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur next story is about a young man who lived a double life; his name is Christopher Yuan. He grew up in a Christian family; but by the time that he was in dental school, he was living a double life. He was a student by day; but at night, he found himself deeply involved in the gay lifestyle and highly successful as a drug dealer. Christopher was so caught up in that lifestyle that he <em>never<\/em> imagined that it would end until the day a dozen agents of the DEA showed up at his door. Here\u2019s Christopher remembering that morning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>Broadcast] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> I did not think I was going to get caught\u2014I thought that I was invincible; no one was ever going to touch me\u2014so when I finally got arrested, it was unbelief. I couldn\u2019t believe that this was it. It was a few days after I was incarcerated\u2014and I was walking around the cell block\u2014I passed by a garbage can. There was just filth coming out of it; I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s my life\u2014trash.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was about to walk by that trash can; and yet, I saw something on top of that trash. I picked it up; it was a Gideon\u2019s New Testament. I took it back to my cell; I opened up that Good Book. For the first time, I read through the entire Gospel of Mark that night. But I did not think that this was going to be the answer to all my problems. I\u2019m pretty stubborn. I had a hard, hard heart; and I didn\u2019t want to change. Yes, the drugs\u2014obviously, that was not healthy\u2014but \u201cI\u2019m gay. This is the way I am; I can\u2019t change. Why do I even need to change?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI believe it was a true miracle of God\/that it was the Holy Spirit that indwells within us that convicted me. I just read through the Bible. I went through every verse, every chapter, every page of Scripture\u2014looking for <em>anything<\/em> to justify, to have a positive\/to bless homosexual relationships: monogamous, adult-consensual homosexual relationships\u2014but I couldn\u2019t find anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is a passage that we see three times\u2014you know, once in the Old\/twice in the New\u2014where it says, \u201cBe holy for I am holy.\u201d I thought, \u201cEven if I became straight, I would still need to submit my life, my thoughts, my passions to the lordship of Jesus Christ. Even if, somehow, there was this shift from going from gay to straight, I would still need to pursue holiness.\u201d That is why I realize that the opposite of homosexuality is not heterosexuality\u2014that shouldn\u2019t be my <em>goal<\/em>\u2014but the opposite of homosexuality is holiness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI needed to pursue holiness. We all need to pursue holiness; it does not matter what your proclivities are. God has called us to live a life of holiness, not on our own strength, but through the power of the Holy Spirit. That was the beginning of me realizing that this is what God is calling me to\u2014not to focus upon my orientation, as the world would call it\/not focusing upon, \u201cWhat are my temptations?\u201d\u2014but focusing upon living a life of purity and holiness, regardless of whether these temptations and struggles go away or not.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Dealing with the issue of idols in your life, ultimately, led you to the foot of the cross to come clean. How did that happen?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> I was asking myself the questions. You know, reading through the Bible, so many times, we see idolatry and the condemnation; I thought, \u201cI don\u2019t bow to any graven image. I don\u2019t have\/you know, I don\u2019t go to an idol temple.\u201d Yet, I realized: \u201cYou know what? No, an idol means anything that I feel like I can\u2019t live without.\u201d I began to ask myself that question. Initially, that was obvious; it was the drugs\/that was something that I felt like I couldn\u2019t live without.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the last thing that God was convicting me of was just the hold that sex had on my life\u2014and the need for intimacy, and physical intimacy, and then, also, my sexuality\u2014how that was such a big part of my identity. I realized that I had put my identity in the wrong thing\/in my sexuality. I had gone from putting\/I mean, my identity in my sexuality to, now, putting my identity in Christ. That was, I think, really a key part in coming to know who Jesus was and what that meant in living in the midst of our daily struggles that we continue to have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That\u2019s Christopher Yuan. You know, in Hebrews 4:12, there are these words: \u201cFor the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of the soul and spirit of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.\u201d There is life in God\u2019s Word. Christopher Yuan found that, as he sat in that jail cell. God truly redeems our past messes and failures. Today, Christopher\u2014he is a professor at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. Isn\u2019t that incredible?\u2014how God can take one life and turn it around. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I think it\u2019s safe to say that on each of these three stops today\u2014the first one in the Pacific Ocean with Ed Harrell; and the second stop in Southern California with Jeremy Camp; and now, in Chicago, with Christopher Yuan\u2014that God\u2019s Word captured each of these men differently and effectively. I hope His Word has captured you today. If it hasn\u2019t, why don\u2019t you spend some time reading through the book of John? If you are not familiar with the Bible, it\u2019s in the right hand side of that book; some people call it the New Testament. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we said, it\u2019s Memorial Day this weekend. As you\u2019re enjoying that extra day off, or the picnic, or the family barbeque, we have people to thank: men and women of courage, and their families, who have paid a large price for our freedoms. I\u2019m going to join them.\u201d He said, \u201cHarrell, if you go, I\u2019m going to go.\u201d Here are two Marines and five sailors\u2014began to say goodbye to our 15 other sailors\u2014and we're going to swim to the Philippines, we thought. Here we start.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Was there anything said by the guys you left?\u00a0 Did they say, \u201cThat\u2019s foolish to do that\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed: <\/strong>They did; they thought it was foolish. They said, \u201cThe sharks will get you.\u201d Well, they\u2019ve already gotten a bigger part of us; and there was really no\/seemingly, no advantage to just stay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe left our group; and after an hour or two, then swimming, I saw some debris out at the starboard side, out maybe a couple of hundred yards or so, and a hundred yards ahead of us. I called it to the attention of the others. We watched it for a good while. At first, we thought, \u201cWell, it\u2019s one of our buddies out there\u201d; but then as we got closer, we could tell that it was debris of some kind, not one of ours. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou pray for food: \u201cWhat\u2019s the possibility?\u2014could there be food out there?\u201d We prayed. I know I said, \u201cI tell you what. If you\u2019ll keep going straight, I\u2019m going to swim out and get that. If it\u2019s just a crate, then we\u2019ll bring it in and fasten it onto our others here; but let\u2019s hope and pray that it could be food.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, they thought I was foolish again; because the sharks maybe would get a straggler out there. But, really, I felt a real compelling force that says: \u201cGo for it. Go and see what it might be.\u201d\u00a0 I know, as I swam, and got closer and closer to that crate, I'm praying for food; I'm praying for water\u2014anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I got close enough that I could see those potatoes in that crate, kind of in desperation\u2014I didn't pause to thank the Lord for what I'm about to eat\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but in desperation, I'm making my way to those potatoes. I reached in to get that first potato. Then, as I got a hold of that first potato, kind of in the agony of defeat, all that rotten potato began to squeeze through my fingers. As I kind of squeezed that in despair then, all of a sudden, it was solid potato on the inside. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI often say, \u201cYou know what a rotten potato smells like?\u00a0 I know what they taste like.\u201d\u00a0 To take that potato then, and to peel it with my hands and my teeth\u2014and eat part rotten potato and part solid potato\u2014that was some food that I needed, some starch, and some water in that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I began to peel some of them, then, and fill my dungaree pockets full; and then I began to make my way back, then, to my buddies, with still a lot of potatoes in the crate. They could see that here I\u2019m swimming, with an arm on that crate, and eating something, and swimming. They hollered out: \u201cWhat is it?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cRotten potatoes.\u201d\u00a0 They left the life raft, and they joined me out there. We had a feast. Oftentimes, I talk to young people\/I say, \u201cYou know, we had a picnic and no ants to bother us.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>That\u2019s Ed Harrell who, today, is the last living survivor of the <em>USS Indianapolis<\/em>. He has lived an amazing life\/an amazing life of faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I see a freeway entrance leading us to Southern California. That\u2019s where Christian singer\/songwriter, Jeremy Camp was when he met his first wife. You know who I\u2019m talking about; right? You probably recognize some of his songs: <em>Take You Back<\/em>, <em>Walk by Faith<\/em>, <em>I Still Believe<\/em>. If you\u2019re familiar with his music, you know that his lyrics reveal a heart that\u2019s been broken and a faith that\u2019s been tested and restored. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJeremy\u2019s faith was tested when he married a young lady, who was sick with cancer. He married Melissa Lynn Henning, praying that God would heal her. Here is Jeremy remembering those first few days of their marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>Broadcast] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> With cancer, of course, you have <em>no clue<\/em>; it\u2019s very unpredictable. They were doing\u2014she had ovarian cancer\u2014so it was a very\/and it was called granulosa cell tumor\u2014it\u2019s very rapidly growing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt that point, knowing, \u201cI don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen,\u201d\u2014we both didn\u2019t know what was going to happen\u2014I didn\u2019t care. I knew that I loved her, and I knew that I wanted to be with her, no matter what happened. We formally got engaged; and\/just the journey began, for sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you read 2 Corinthians 5:7\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> Whew!\u2014\u201ccalled to walk by faith and not by sight.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe ended up getting married and went on our honeymoon. On the honeymoon, she was noticing some issues. I opened up the Word of God\u2014called to walk by faith and not by sight\u2014I pulled out a guitar that was in the place we were staying\u2014it was her aunt and uncle\u2019s house they let us stay at in Hawaii; so sweet\u2014and started playing the song: \u201cWill I believe You when You say Your hand will guide my every way?\u00a0 I receive the words You say every moment of every day.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember just going, \u201cHey, am I really going to <em>believe<\/em> what this is saying?\u201d I concluded\u2014on the chorus, of course\u2014just saying, \u201cAlright, I will walk by faith even when I cannot see; because this broken road prepares Your will for me.\u201d\u00a0 Didn\u2019t even know exactly what that meant in the sense of what was going to happen; but I knew that it was, at this point, we were stepping out in faith on what was going to happen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was not long after you got back from your honeymoon that you were in the doctor\u2019s office again. This time, they said, \u201cIt\u2019s not good.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> Yes, we\/so we went in, and the doctor pulled me aside. I went out of the room; I said, \u201cOkay; so what\u2019s going on?\u201d\u00a0 He goes, \u201cWell, the cancer has returned; and it\u2019s spread very rapidly.\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cOkay, what\u2019s the next step?\u00a0 What do we do?\u201d\u00a0 He, literally, said\/he goes, \u201cThere\u2019s nothing else we can do. She has weeks to months to live.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How are you processing\u2014this all-powerful, all-loving God, who you trust and you believe in\u2014and your wife\u2019s deteriorating condition and coming to a point, where you\u2019re going, \u201cI don\u2019t think she\u2019s going to make it\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How are you making sense of that in your own life? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> You know, it\u2019s something that you really have to understand God\u2019s sovereignty, His goodness, His mercy,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> \u2014and His faithfulness in the midst of what we may think is supposed to be. You see, because we always have an idea of what something should be or something should turn out to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy ideal, of course: \u201cHeal. We go out\u2014we have a story of a miracle; we have a story of God\u2019s healing power\u2014and we\u2019re going to share this with the world. I mean, we\u2019re going to be in front of thousands of people, sharing of God\u2019s goodness, singing songs; and she\u2019s going to be there.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have to come to grips with: \u201cGod, are You trustworthy?\u201d\u00a0 That was a question I started having: \u201cCan I really trust You\/really trust You?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You and Melissa were married October 21, 2000; she died February 5, 2001. She lived 100 days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> \u2014in our marriage; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Take us to those last days\u2014because there was a moment in that hospital room that was a pretty amazing moment in the midst of her pain, and suffering, and unconsciousness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014there was a moment; wasn\u2019t there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy:<\/strong> Yes, there was. It was five hours before she went to be with the Lord. I remember she stood up out of bed and goes: \u201cIt\u2019s gone!\u00a0 It\u2019s gone!\u201d\u00a0 And I was\/I thought, \u201cOkay, this is just a moment, where she is not really understanding what\u2019s happening.\u201d\u00a0 She looked at <em>me<\/em> directly in the face; and she goes, \u201cJeremy, you have to believe me; it\u2019s gone.\u201d I thought, \u201cShe\u2019s healed!\u201d\u00a0 She laid down and fell asleep; and then, never woke up again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember, when I first heard the words, \u201cShe\u2019s with Jesus now,\u201d I was on the ground, just weeping, in the fetal position, crying out to God\/just saying, \u201cGod, I\u2019m so confused. What just happened in this?\u201d\u00a0 There was worship music playing in the background. I remember God just saying to me, \u201cI want you to stand up and worship Me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad\u2014I remember him helping me up\u2014and we all just started raising our hands for the Lord. It was the most powerful moment in my life. I felt the presence of God so thick; I can\u2019t even explain it: \u201cShe\u2019s with Jesus.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Jeremy singing <em>I Still Believe<\/em>]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Jeremy is still recording and making great music. In fact, that song, <em>I Still Believe<\/em>, was the first song that he wrote after Melissa passed away. Jeremy has remarried; he is now married Adrienne, and they have three kids. He recently founded a ministry called Speaking Louder Ministries, which provides free crusade-style events and comes alongside local churches or missionaries in countries where the gospel needs to be heard. I mean\u2014and this is cool\u2014it\u2019s places like Uganda, and Kyrgyzstan, India, and Ukraine\u2014exciting stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHey, I think I see a destination spot up ahead. It\u2019s time to get out and take a selfie while we listen to Ron Deal talking about summer travel advice for stepfamilies. I have a feeling we are going to run into some emergency warning signs up ahead. I\u2019ll explain more in two minutes. I\u2019m Michelle Hill. We\u2019ve been travelling around the world today hearing stories of God\u2019s power in the lives of His children. Have you ever noticed that, when one of His children derails on this journey of life, how God can put up some speed bumps or even detours to get our attention? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur next story is about a young man who lived a double life; his name is Christopher Yuan. He grew up in a Christian family; but by the time that he was in dental school, he was living a double life. He was a student by day; but at night, he found himself deeply involved in the gay lifestyle and highly successful as a drug dealer. Christopher was so caught up in that lifestyle that he <em>never<\/em> imagined that it would end until the day a dozen agents of the DEA showed up at his door. Here\u2019s Christopher remembering that morning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>Broadcast] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> I did not think I was going to get caught\u2014I thought that I was invincible; no one was ever going to touch me\u2014so when I finally got arrested, it was unbelief. I couldn\u2019t believe that this was it. It was a few days after I was incarcerated\u2014and I was walking around the cell block\u2014I passed by a garbage can. There was just filth coming out of it; I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s my life\u2014trash.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was about to walk by that trash can; and yet, I saw something on top of that trash. I picked it up; it was a Gideon\u2019s New Testament. I took it back to my cell; I opened up that Good Book. For the first time, I read through the entire Gospel of Mark that night. But I did not think that this was going to be the answer to all my problems. I\u2019m pretty stubborn. I had a hard, hard heart; and I didn\u2019t want to change. Yes, the drugs\u2014obviously, that was not healthy\u2014but \u201cI\u2019m gay. This is the way I am; I can\u2019t change. Why do I even need to change?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI believe it was a true miracle of God\/that it was the Holy Spirit that indwells within us that convicted me. I just read through the Bible. I went through every verse, every chapter, every page of Scripture\u2014looking for <em>anything<\/em> to justify, to have a positive\/to bless homosexual relationships: monogamous, adult-consensual homosexual relationships\u2014but I couldn\u2019t find anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is a passage that we see three times\u2014you know, once in the Old\/twice in the New\u2014where it says, \u201cBe holy for I am holy.\u201d I thought, \u201cEven if I became straight, I would still need to submit my life, my thoughts, my passions to the lordship of Jesus Christ. Even if, somehow, there was this shift from going from gay to straight, I would still need to pursue holiness.\u201d That is why I realize that the opposite of homosexuality is not heterosexuality\u2014that shouldn\u2019t be my <em>goal<\/em>\u2014but the opposite of homosexuality is holiness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI needed to pursue holiness. We all need to pursue holiness; it does not matter what your proclivities are. God has called us to live a life of holiness, not on our own strength, but through the power of the Holy Spirit. That was the beginning of me realizing that this is what God is calling me to\u2014not to focus upon my orientation, as the world would call it\/not focusing upon, \u201cWhat are my temptations?\u201d\u2014but focusing upon living a life of purity and holiness, regardless of whether these temptations and struggles go away or not.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Dealing with the issue of idols in your life, ultimately, led you to the foot of the cross to come clean. How did that happen?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> I was asking myself the questions. You know, reading through the Bible, so many times, we see idolatry and the condemnation; I thought, \u201cI don\u2019t bow to any graven image. I don\u2019t have\/you know, I don\u2019t go to an idol temple.\u201d Yet, I realized: \u201cYou know what? No, an idol means anything that I feel like I can\u2019t live without.\u201d I began to ask myself that question. Initially, that was obvious; it was the drugs\/that was something that I felt like I couldn\u2019t live without.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the last thing that God was convicting me of was just the hold that sex had on my life\u2014and the need for intimacy, and physical intimacy, and then, also, my sexuality\u2014how that was such a big part of my identity. I realized that I had put my identity in the wrong thing\/in my sexuality. I had gone from putting\/I mean, my identity in my sexuality to, now, putting my identity in Christ. That was, I think, really a key part in coming to know who Jesus was and what that meant in living in the midst of our daily struggles that we continue to have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That\u2019s Christopher Yuan. You know, in Hebrews 4:12, there are these words: \u201cFor the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of the soul and spirit of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.\u201d There is life in God\u2019s Word. Christopher Yuan found that, as he sat in that jail cell. God truly redeems our past messes and failures. Today, Christopher\u2014he is a professor at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. Isn\u2019t that incredible?\u2014how God can take one life and turn it around. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I think it\u2019s safe to say that on each of these three stops today\u2014the first one in the Pacific Ocean with Ed Harrell; and the second stop in Southern California with Jeremy Camp; and now, in Chicago, with Christopher Yuan\u2014that God\u2019s Word captured each of these men differently and effectively. I hope His Word has captured you today. If it hasn\u2019t, why don\u2019t you spend some time reading through the book of John? If you are not familiar with the Bible, it\u2019s in the right hand side of that book; some people call it the New Testament. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we said, it\u2019s Memorial Day this weekend. As you\u2019re enjoying that extra day off, or the picnic, or the family barbeque, we have people to thank: men and women of courage, and their families, who have paid a large price for our freedoms.
