There is something that you and I and our friend, Alistair Begg\u2014something we all have in common\u2014do you know what it is? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We like the Cleveland Browns? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Of course, that\u2019s what you\u2019d say! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, I like the Cleveland Browns okay. They are not on my upper radar. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, I know Alistair is a pastor in Cleveland. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He is; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> He\u2019s probably been in the dog pound, yelling at the Detroit Lions; I don\u2019t know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here is what I was thinking of: Alistair and you and I have all quoted pop songs from the \u201860s and the \u201870s pretty regularly in our preaching. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t know Alistair did that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t know that either. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh, man! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Really? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He is pulling out Beatles\u2019 lyrics, and Simon and Garfunkel lyrics, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Really? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> This is one of the reasons you <em>love<\/em> him, Bob; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is\/it is one of the reasons. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I love him now, too; that\u2019s awesome. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In fact, I was at an event\u2014and we\u2019re bringing all of this up because we\u2019re going to share with our listeners today a portion of a conversation I had with Alistair Begg recently\u2014Alistair is a pastor in suburban Cleveland. He is the voice that many of our listeners hear on the radio program, <em>Truth for Life<\/em>; a wonderful Bible teacher\u2014but we were together, and I was doing one of my patented \u201cName That Tune\u201d gameshows; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> You\u2019re good at that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Nobody can beat you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I love doing this. I picked out some categories that I knew Alistair would do well on, and the final category\/the final <em>Jeopardy<\/em> category was songs of Paul Simon. I knew he would nail that, but the other contestant won that category instead of Alistair. He [Alistair] was so mad\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Really? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that he [other contestant] got his category. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnyway, I have had the opportunity, over the last ten years, to introduce his daily program\/be the voice at the beginning and at the end of <em>Truth for Life<\/em>. I\u2019ve had to make sure that I call that program <em>Truth for Life<\/em> and give the phone number for that program instead of <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe sat down recently; and I just asked him about his marriage, about how he met his wife Susan. There is, actually, an overlap with Campus Crusade for Christ<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, which we are a part of. It\u2019s a remarkable story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs our listeners will hear, I said, \u201cThis is none of my business, but when was the first time you kissed Susan?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> That\u2019s a little personal there, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was surprised by the answer. I think you\u2019ll be surprised by the answer, too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How did you wind up, as a teenager, in America in the summer? How did that happen? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Oh, my late father-in-law would say, \u201cBecause I am a tenacious Scot,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s the answer. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know how much of the story you want; but it was this American family\u2014I\u2019d never met an American family\u2014that I met, when I was 16 in suburban London, that introduced me to Americans, who were in the UK with Campus Crusade for Christ. It was one of the girls of that American family that I had set my affection on; and without\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So wait; break that\u2014so you meet her, and you see her\u2014you go, \u201cWow!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes; yes, yes\u2014the simple stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re 16? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> She was 13. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201413. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes, yes. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did that compute for you that you are 16 and she\u2019s 13? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> No; I never gave any thought to it at all. I never\/I never imagined anything really beyond the fact that I sat down to lunch at this table with\u2014invited to this American home\u2014and around the table were various people\/some friends. There were people in the family and, across from me, a girl. She had lovely, lovely eyes; I was just fascinated\/captivated by this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next day, one of my friends and I went to Carnaby Street in London before we got on the train to go back to Leeds. I got a postcard on Carnaby Street, and I wrote to her. I said, \u201cIt was so wonderful to meet you. Ask your mother if it\u2019s okay if I write letters to you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were instantly smitten. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes. Throughout my life, ever so often, I have had a dream that we never actually got married. I wake up in the <em>worst<\/em> condition possible until I suddenly realize, \u201cNo, it\u2019s a dream; it\u2019s a dream. We\u2019re here.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was what started. We lived 300 miles apart from one another. Then, one day, without checking, that guy for Chrysler\u2014what did you call him?\u2014the famous one? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Iacocca? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes; Iacocca. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Iacocca, without checking with me, took the American family back to America. I had to\/I had to\u2014then, the problem\u2014it wasn\u2019t that it was 300 miles between us; it was 3,000 miles between us. I was very sad, and there is more to that story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy friend was friendly with her sister. I called him on the phone; I said, \u201cDid you hear that they are not coming back?\u201d He said, \u201cYes.\u201d I said, \u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d He said, \u201cWhat do you mean?\u2014\u2018What are you going to do?\u2019\u201d \u201cWell, what are you going to do? They are not coming back!\u201d He said, \u201cWell, that\u2019s it.\u201d He said, \u201cYou know, it was nice. They live there; we live here. Let\u2019s move on.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cNo, I\u2019m not doing that.\u201d He said, \u201cWell, what are you going to do?\u201d I said, \u201cI\u2019m going to America.\u201d It was like, \u201cYes, sure you are; why don\u2019t you visit Mars on the way?\u201d [Laughter] But I put the phone down in my hallway; and I said, \u201cI will go to America. I\u2019m not\/this is not over.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wrote letters for another year. I inveigled a way to get to Explo \u201972 with Campus Crusade, knowing that her folks had introduced me to Campus Crusade and discovering that they were going to go to Explo as well, taking this girl with them. After about 14 months, I then met up with her in the Adolphus Hotel, which is where I was staying with these Campus Crusade guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe came walking down the stairs. Now, she is 16 years old. I haven\u2019t seen her in 14 months. I suppose it could have been that she said, \u201cHey; hello,\u201d and the summer happened; but no, no, I got through that summer. Then, I said, \u201cYou know, I\u2019m going to write to you more and more.\u201d I mean, the\u2014she was here [in America]; the boys were here; all the stuff was here\u2014everything was here. All I had was a pen\u2014no telephones, no faxes, no Twitter<sup> \u00ae<\/sup>, no nothing\u2014we had no\/nothing at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s how I ended up there; and that\u2019s how I ended up back there in \u201975, because we just ran out of postage and just decided to get married; but at that point, she was only 20. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\/had you had crushes before her? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Oh, yes, every time; yes, yes. [Laughter] Yes, I mean, always; but not\/this was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You knew this was different? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes; well, we found out, after seven years of writing letters, it was different. The thing that made it different was\u2014it was like the beginning; I was just silly childhood stuff\u2014we have all of our letters\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> \u2014all of our letters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> At what point did you say, \u201cWe\u2019re done writing letters. It\u2019s time to solidify this\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Well, I was so foolish and na\u00efve about everything that I bet I told her that when I was 18: \u201cIf we keep this thing going, you know, I\u2019m going to marry you if you\u2019ll let me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, in the winter of \u201973, I came to America. I actually sat down with her dad; I said, \u201cThis thing here\/this is killing me, because I live and die for the letters from your daughter. I\u2019m not messing around. I don\u2019t know how this is going to work out, but I want you to know that\u2019s how serious I am. I want to know that you are okay with that. If you\u2019re not okay, I want to know that, too,\u201d\u2014because it was just devastating for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that was in the winter of \u201973. She then came in the summer of \u201974. Of course, my mother had died in November of \u201972; and we roamed around Scotland with my dad. Bless his heart\u2014he took us around\u2014it must have been so hard for him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is none of my business: your first kiss?\u2014where?\u2014when?\u2014how? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> In the back of a friend\u2019s car; I told James Corer\/I said, \u201cDon\u2019t look through your rearview mirror here, James.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How long had you been writing letters at the point you kissed her for the first time? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> I kissed her on that Sunday <em>night<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014when you met her that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes! [Laughter] I kissed her in the back of the car before she got out. She didn\u2019t know what had happened to her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that first day\u2014she\u2019s 13. You\u2019ve just had dinner with her, and you said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> No, no, we went to <em>church<\/em>; it was very spiritual. [Laughter] She did not go to church in the evening, because she was not old enough for the youth group; but like you say, it\u2019s none of your stinking business. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re a rather roguish young man to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> \u2014tenacious Scot! [Laughter] Listen; it was\/there was something about the whole thing that was almost cosmic; you know? But it wasn\u2019t right. If I\u2019ve got some guy doing that with my daughters, you know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> \u2014like my one granddaughter is ten. I always say to girls now\u2014I meet girls at church and everything\u2014they come; their parents introduce me: \u201cThis is So-and-so.\u201d I say, \u201cHow old are you?\u201d She\u2019ll say, \u201cI\u2019m 13.\u201d I say, \u201cWatch out for Scottish boys!\u201d [Laughter] They don\u2019t know what that means. I say, \u201cWatch out for Scottish boys.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How did you propose? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> I just said, \u201cWe\u2019re running out of postage; will you marry me?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Nothing fancy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Nothing fancy; no. We went out to dinner. I bought a ring in a department store. Her sisters, you know, they felt sorry for her: \u201cOh, look, what has happened to Sue,\u201d \u201cLook, she married a guy, who is going to be a pastor. We\u2019re going to have to send care packages to this girl,\u201d \u201cThis is a <em>terrible<\/em> thing; what are we going to do?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She could have had no idea she was\/what she was signing on to as a pastor\u2019s wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Oh, no, she couldn\u2019t; especially, not in Scotland in the \u201870s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; did she ever have a season, early in the marriage, where she thought, \u201cWhat have I done?!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Oh, probably. [Laughter] No; you know, we were actually\/we were united in the thing; you know? We look back on it now\u2014here we are\u2014in one of the most-visited cities of Western Europe. We never did anything; we had no money. I wanted to please Derek Prime so much that, if he said, \u201cGo visit ten people,\u201d I would visit twenty people. We didn\u2019t suffer from it; but she was gone from her mom, her dad, her siblings\u2014everything that really represented security in her life\u2014she was hanging it all on companionship with me, but she knew that that was going to happen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The financial change\u2014because she had grown up in a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes; pretty nice setup. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; and now, she\u2019s living on the associate pastor\u2019s wages in Edinburgh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> She\u2019s good. She\u2019s very, very good. She used to make things. The \u201870s are the era of all strange stuff; you know? But she can sew; she can do stuff. She would make these things; and then, we would drive around and sell them in stores. She would go in, and she would come out; and say, \u201cI sold ten of them.\u201d I go, \u201cThat\u2019s really good! That\u2019s really good!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s not a lazy person. She decided she was going to work as a helper in, basically, a senior-citizens home. She would get up in the morning; she\u2019d go away and feed porridge to old men, who couldn\u2019t find their teeth, and stuff like that. No, she would make\/she would make her go of it. She\u2019s got far more of a spirit of adventure than myself. She would never be stuck; I mean, I would be stuck. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> She wouldn\u2019t be stuck. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you think\u2014or did she think\u2014you would live in Scotland your whole lives? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> It never ever occurred to us to think of anything other; because by the time we were two years into it, Sue had miscarried in Edinburgh. Then our son was born, so all the formative elements of her life and sort of growing up in married life were all formed in this Scottish framework. She was very contented; she was very happy. My sisters loved her from the age of 13. I mean, they met her when she was, I think, 14. To this day, they are the <em>best<\/em> of friends. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEverything was good. She\/it wasn\u2019t quid pro quo: \u201cIt may be, if I do x-years here, you\u2019ll come and do x-years there,\u201d\u2014no. But when the invitation came from America, then, as I say, \u201cIt was a relatively easy thing for her to come back into an environment that was not strange to her.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If you\u2019re sitting down with a 16-year-old young man today, what\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> This is a different day. [Laughter] That\u2019s the first thing: \u201cNow, this is a different day.\u201d I mean, the level of\u2014yes\u2014anyway, finish your question; sorry I interrupted you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No; it\u2019s a different day. What counsel do you give young men and young women about thinking rightly about marriage in this day? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Well, one of things I say\u2014and you know, they say, \u201cWell, you say this; but what about\u2026.\u201d The safety valve for me in this whole thing\u2014that you kissed this girl in the car before she leaves\u2014but I was 300 miles away. That would have been a real problem if I lived three doors up from her or something. I mean, it was just so bizarre; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> It was: \u201cIt shouldn\u2019t have happened\u201d; \u201cIt should have happened,\u201d\u2014who knows? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re writing letters as opposed to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Writing letters\u2014no, there is no\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014hanging out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> No, we don\u2019t hang out. There\u2019s no way to develop that except these crazy letters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I would say to somebody\/one of the things I say to them is always: \u201cNever assume that a friendship has to be more than a friendship when it begins, especially in our sexualized environment, where the phenomenal, ridiculous pressure and notions that are attached to all of this.\u201d Christian young people are going to have to be prepared to set boundaries for themselves that are regarded as absolutely ridiculous by their surrounding culture. It\u2019s one of the ways in which the teenager can actually prove that we are a peculiar people. <br><br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> You know, I want to encourage them and help them in that regard. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlso, because as I think we probably can acknowledge, many of the marital difficulties that we deal with in pastoral ministry\u2014I find myself, when they walk out of the door, saying, \u201cI don\u2019t think they\u2019ve ever been friends. I don\u2019t think it was that their friendship dissipated; I don\u2019t think they started as friends,\u201d\u2014especially, if you add a physical dimension to the relationship on the frontend, that may actually become a driver for things; that\u2019s one of the things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEnjoy developing friendships without putting the added pressure on the thing in male\/female relationships. Look to role models that can help you with this. Be honest with whoever it is in your sphere of influence, whether it\u2019s your youth pastor or whatever else it is. Realize that he knows <em>exactly<\/em> what\u2019s going through your head; he understands <em>exactly<\/em> the concerns, and the passions, and stuff. I don\u2019t know much beyond that just as I think about it just now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> On our wedding invitation, we had 1 John 4:19: \u201cWe love because He first loved us.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Has there been a verse that has marked your marriage? Anything that the two of you have come back to as kind of formative to what your relationship\/how God has brought the two of you together? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Well, \u201cAnd the two shall become one.\u201d Our wedding rings: engraved into hers was \u201cAnd the two\u2026\u201d; and engraved into mine was \u201c\u2026shall become one.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s a fun love story. We\u2019ve been listening to Pastor Alistair Begg and a conversation I had with him, recently, just sharing about how he met his wife Susan and about how they got married. I love hearing people\u2019s stories like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It\u2019s really sweet, actually. I thought, at the beginning of the program\u2014when you said, \u201cDo you know what the three of us have in common?\u201d\u2014I thought you were going to say, \u201cWe all went hard after the love of our lives,\u201d because you did! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> All of you did; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s true; and all of us have tried to put Jesus at the center of what we\u2019re doing in marriage, which is ultimately what this is all about. It\u2019s not\/it\u2019s not temperament or personality. In fact, even as Alistair was talking, I was thinking, \u201cThey could not have anticipated\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cwhat God had for them.\u201d You guys couldn\u2019t\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014have anticipated. Mary Ann and I could not have anticipated. If you go in, thinking, \u201cWell, as long as everything stays stable, this marriage can work,\u201d it\u2019s not going to stay stable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve got to be ready for whatever comes, and your foundation has got to be in something more than just your circumstances. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI hope our listeners will go online at FamilyLifeToday.com and download the entire conversation with Alistair. He is the voice that many of our listeners hear on the radio program, <em>Truth for Life<\/em>; a wonderful Bible teacher\u2014but we were together, and I was doing one of my patented \u201cName That Tune\u201d gameshows; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> You\u2019re good at that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Nobody can beat you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I love doing this. I picked out some categories that I knew Alistair would do well on, and the final category\/the final <em>Jeopardy<\/em> category was songs of Paul Simon. He [Alistair] was so mad\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Really? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that he [other contestant] got his category. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnyway, I have had the opportunity, over the last ten years, to introduce his daily program\/be the voice at the beginning and at the end of <em>Truth for Life<\/em>. I\u2019ve had to make sure that I call that program <em>Truth for Life<\/em> and give the phone number for that program instead of <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe sat down recently; and I just asked him about his marriage, about how he met his wife Susan. There is, actually, an overlap with Campus Crusade for Christ<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, which we are a part of. It\u2019s a remarkable story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs our listeners will hear, I said, \u201cThis is none of my business, but when was the first time you kissed Susan?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> That\u2019s a little personal there, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was surprised by the answer. I think you\u2019ll be surprised by the answer, too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How did you wind up, as a teenager, in America in the summer? How did that happen? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Oh, my late father-in-law would say, \u201cBecause I am a tenacious Scot,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s the answer. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know how much of the story you want; but it was this American family\u2014I\u2019d never met an American family\u2014that I met, when I was 16 in suburban London, that introduced me to Americans, who were in the UK with Campus Crusade for Christ. It was one of the girls of that American family that I had set my affection on; and without\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So wait; break that\u2014so you meet her, and you see her\u2014you go, \u201cWow!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes; yes, yes\u2014the simple stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re 16? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> She was 13. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201413. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes, yes. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did that compute for you that you are 16 and she\u2019s 13? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> No; I never gave any thought to it at all. I never\/I never imagined anything really beyond the fact that I sat down to lunch at this table with\u2014invited to this American home\u2014and around the table were various people\/some friends. There were people in the family and, across from me, a girl. She had lovely, lovely eyes; I was just fascinated\/captivated by this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next day, one of my friends and I went to Carnaby Street in London before we got on the train to go back to Leeds. I got a postcard on Carnaby Street, and I wrote to her. I said, \u201cIt was so wonderful to meet you. Ask your mother if it\u2019s okay if I write letters to you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were instantly smitten. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes. Throughout my life, ever so often, I have had a dream that we never actually got married. I wake up in the <em>worst<\/em> condition possible until I suddenly realize, \u201cNo, it\u2019s a dream; it\u2019s a dream. We\u2019re here.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was what started. We lived 300 miles apart from one another. Then, one day, without checking, that guy for Chrysler\u2014what did you call him?\u2014the famous one? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Iacocca? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes; Iacocca. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Iacocca, without checking with me, took the American family back to America. I had to\/I had to\u2014then, the problem\u2014it wasn\u2019t that it was 300 miles between us; it was 3,000 miles between us. I was very sad, and there is more to that story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy friend was friendly with her sister. I called him on the phone; I said, \u201cDid you hear that they are not coming back?\u201d He said, \u201cYes.\u201d I said, \u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d He said, \u201cWhat do you mean?\u2014\u2018What are you going to do?\u2019\u201d \u201cWell, what are you going to do? They are not coming back!\u201d He said, \u201cWell, that\u2019s it.\u201d He said, \u201cYou know, it was nice. They live there; we live here. Let\u2019s move on.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cNo, I\u2019m not doing that.\u201d He said, \u201cWell, what are you going to do?\u201d I said, \u201cI\u2019m going to America.\u201d It was like, \u201cYes, sure you are; why don\u2019t you visit Mars on the way?\u201d [Laughter] But I put the phone down in my hallway; and I said, \u201cI will go to America. I\u2019m not\/this is not over.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wrote letters for another year. I inveigled a way to get to Explo \u201972 with Campus Crusade, knowing that her folks had introduced me to Campus Crusade and discovering that they were going to go to Explo as well, taking this girl with them. After about 14 months, I then met up with her in the Adolphus Hotel, which is where I was staying with these Campus Crusade guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe came walking down the stairs. Now, she is 16 years old. I haven\u2019t seen her in 14 months. I suppose it could have been that she said, \u201cHey; hello,\u201d and the summer happened; but no, no, I got through that summer. Then, I said, \u201cYou know, I\u2019m going to write to you more and more.\u201d I mean, the\u2014she was here [in America]; the boys were here; all the stuff was here\u2014everything was here. All I had was a pen\u2014no telephones, no faxes, no Twitter<sup> \u00ae<\/sup>, no nothing\u2014we had no\/nothing at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s how I ended up there; and that\u2019s how I ended up back there in \u201975, because we just ran out of postage and just decided to get married; but at that point, she was only 20. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\/had you had crushes before her? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Oh, yes, every time; yes, yes. [Laughter] Yes, I mean, always; but not\/this was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You knew this was different? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes; well, we found out, after seven years of writing letters, it was different. The thing that made it different was\u2014it was like the beginning; I was just silly childhood stuff\u2014we have all of our letters\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> \u2014all of our letters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> At what point did you say, \u201cWe\u2019re done writing letters. It\u2019s time to solidify this\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Well, I was so foolish and na\u00efve about everything that I bet I told her that when I was 18: \u201cIf we keep this thing going, you know, I\u2019m going to marry you if you\u2019ll let me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, in the winter of \u201973, I came to America. I actually sat down with her dad; I said, \u201cThis thing here\/this is killing me, because I live and die for the letters from your daughter. I\u2019m not messing around. I don\u2019t know how this is going to work out, but I want you to know that\u2019s how serious I am. I want to know that you are okay with that. If you\u2019re not okay, I want to know that, too,\u201d\u2014because it was just devastating for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that was in the winter of \u201973. She then came in the summer of \u201974. Of course, my mother had died in November of \u201972; and we roamed around Scotland with my dad. Bless his heart\u2014he took us around\u2014it must have been so hard for him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is none of my business: your first kiss?\u2014where?\u2014when?\u2014how? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> In the back of a friend\u2019s car; I told James Corer\/I said, \u201cDon\u2019t look through your rearview mirror here, James.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How long had you been writing letters at the point you kissed her for the first time? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> I kissed her on that Sunday <em>night<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014when you met her that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes! [Laughter] I kissed her in the back of the car before she got out. She didn\u2019t know what had happened to her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that first day\u2014she\u2019s 13. You\u2019ve just had dinner with her, and you said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> No, no, we went to <em>church<\/em>; it was very spiritual. [Laughter] She did not go to church in the evening, because she was not old enough for the youth group; but like you say, it\u2019s none of your stinking business. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re a rather roguish young man to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> \u2014tenacious Scot! [Laughter] Listen; it was\/there was something about the whole thing that was almost cosmic; you know? But it wasn\u2019t right. If I\u2019ve got some guy doing that with my daughters, you know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> \u2014like my one granddaughter is ten. I always say to girls now\u2014I meet girls at church and everything\u2014they come; their parents introduce me: \u201cThis is So-and-so.\u201d I say, \u201cHow old are you?\u201d She\u2019ll say, \u201cI\u2019m 13.\u201d I say, \u201cWatch out for Scottish boys!\u201d [Laughter] They don\u2019t know what that means. I say, \u201cWatch out for Scottish boys.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How did you propose? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> I just said, \u201cWe\u2019re running out of postage; will you marry me?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Nothing fancy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Nothing fancy; no. We went out to dinner. I bought a ring in a department store. Her sisters, you know, they felt sorry for her: \u201cOh, look, what has happened to Sue,\u201d \u201cLook, she married a guy, who is going to be a pastor. We\u2019re going to have to send care packages to this girl,\u201d \u201cThis is a <em>terrible<\/em> thing; what are we going to do?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She could have had no idea she was\/what she was signing on to as a pastor\u2019s wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Oh, no, she couldn\u2019t; especially, not in Scotland in the \u201870s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; did she ever have a season, early in the marriage, where she thought, \u201cWhat have I done?!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Oh, probably. [Laughter] No; you know, we were actually\/we were united in the thing; you know? We look back on it now\u2014here we are\u2014in one of the most-visited cities of Western Europe. We never did anything; we had no money. I wanted to please Derek Prime so much that, if he said, \u201cGo visit ten people,\u201d I would visit twenty people. We didn\u2019t suffer from it; but she was gone from her mom, her dad, her siblings\u2014everything that really represented security in her life\u2014she was hanging it all on companionship with me, but she knew that that was going to happen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The financial change\u2014because she had grown up in a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes; pretty nice setup. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; and now, she\u2019s living on the associate pastor\u2019s wages in Edinburgh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> She\u2019s good. She\u2019s very, very good. She used to make things. The \u201870s are the era of all strange stuff; you know? But she can sew; she can do stuff. She would make these things; and then, we would drive around and sell them in stores. She would go in, and she would come out; and say, \u201cI sold ten of them.\u201d I go, \u201cThat\u2019s really good! That\u2019s really good!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s not a lazy person. She decided she was going to work as a helper in, basically, a senior-citizens home. She would get up in the morning; she\u2019d go away and feed porridge to old men, who couldn\u2019t find their teeth, and stuff like that. No, she would make\/she would make her go of it. She\u2019s got far more of a spirit of adventure than myself. She would never be stuck; I mean, I would be stuck. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> She wouldn\u2019t be stuck. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you think\u2014or did she think\u2014you would live in Scotland your whole lives? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> It never ever occurred to us to think of anything other; because by the time we were two years into it, Sue had miscarried in Edinburgh. Then our son was born, so all the formative elements of her life and sort of growing up in married life were all formed in this Scottish framework. She was very contented; she was very happy. My sisters loved her from the age of 13. I mean, they met her when she was, I think, 14. To this day, they are the <em>best<\/em> of friends. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEverything was good. She\/it wasn\u2019t quid pro quo: \u201cIt may be, if I do x-years here, you\u2019ll come and do x-years there,\u201d\u2014no. But when the invitation came from America, then, as I say, \u201cIt was a relatively easy thing for her to come back into an environment that was not strange to her.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If you\u2019re sitting down with a 16-year-old young man today, what\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> This is a different day. [Laughter] That\u2019s the first thing: \u201cNow, this is a different day.\u201d I mean, the level of\u2014yes\u2014anyway, finish your question; sorry I interrupted you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No; it\u2019s a different day. What counsel do you give young men and young women about thinking rightly about marriage in this day? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Well, one of things I say\u2014and you know, they say, \u201cWell, you say this; but what about\u2026.\u201d The safety valve for me in this whole thing\u2014that you kissed this girl in the car before she leaves\u2014but I was 300 miles away. That would have been a real problem if I lived three doors up from her or something. I mean, it was just so bizarre; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> It was: \u201cIt shouldn\u2019t have happened\u201d; \u201cIt should have happened,\u201d\u2014who knows? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re writing letters as opposed to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Writing letters\u2014no, there is no\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014hanging out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> No, we don\u2019t hang out. There\u2019s no way to develop that except these crazy letters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I would say to somebody\/one of the things I say to them is always: \u201cNever assume that a friendship has to be more than a friendship when it begins, especially in our sexualized environment, where the phenomenal, ridiculous pressure and notions that are attached to all of this.\u201d Christian young people are going to have to be prepared to set boundaries for themselves that are regarded as absolutely ridiculous by their surrounding culture. It\u2019s one of the ways in which the teenager can actually prove that we are a peculiar people. <br><br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> You know, I want to encourage them and help them in that regard. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlso, because as I think we probably can acknowledge, many of the marital difficulties that we deal with in pastoral ministry\u2014I find myself, when they walk out of the door, saying, \u201cI don\u2019t think they\u2019ve ever been friends. I don\u2019t think it was that their friendship dissipated; I don\u2019t think they started as friends,\u201d\u2014especially, if you add a physical dimension to the relationship on the frontend, that may actually become a driver for things; that\u2019s one of the things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEnjoy developing friendships without putting the added pressure on the thing in male\/female relationships. Look to role models that can help you with this. Be honest with whoever it is in your sphere of influence, whether it\u2019s your youth pastor or whatever else it is. Realize that he knows <em>exactly<\/em> what\u2019s going through your head; he understands <em>exactly<\/em> the concerns, and the passions, and stuff. I don\u2019t know much beyond that just as I think about it just now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> On our wedding invitation, we had 1 John 4:19: \u201cWe love because He first loved us.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Has there been a verse that has marked your marriage? Anything that the two of you have come back to as kind of formative to what your relationship\/how God has brought the two of you together? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Well, \u201cAnd the two shall become one.\u201d Our wedding rings: engraved into hers was \u201cAnd the two\u2026\u201d; and engraved into mine was \u201c\u2026shall become one.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s a fun love story. We\u2019ve been listening to Pastor Alistair Begg and a conversation I had with him, recently, just sharing about how he met his wife Susan and about how they got married. I love hearing people\u2019s stories like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It\u2019s really sweet, actually. I thought, at the beginning of the program\u2014when you said, \u201cDo you know what the three of us have in common?\u201d\u2014I thought you were going to say, \u201cWe all went hard after the love of our lives,\u201d because you did! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> All of you did; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s true; and all of us have tried to put Jesus at the center of what we\u2019re doing in marriage, which is ultimately what this is all about. It\u2019s not\/it\u2019s not temperament or personality. In fact, even as Alistair was talking, I was thinking, \u201cThey could not have anticipated\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cwhat God had for them.\u201d You guys couldn\u2019t\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014have anticipated. Mary Ann and I could not have anticipated. I am so grateful to be connected to a ministry that has the Great Commission centered in what we are about\u2014of taking the gospel to people, who haven\u2019t had the chance to hear it, and helping make disciples who make disciples. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt FamilyLife, that\u2019s one of the main things we are about.
