We heard from your husband with the guys, but you like getting together with the women and talking about what God\u2019s design for womanhood is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I <em>love <\/em>being with women. I think part of it is because we\u2019re all struggling with the same thing: and we can admit it; and we can laugh about it; and we can cry about it. It is fun!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And your goal in this message is to talk about how important and how <em>powerful<\/em> it is for a wife to be committed to supporting, affirming, believing in her husband; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Right; we\u2019re going to talk about attitude, our words, our actions, and how to support and respect our men when it\u2019s not always easy to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I really like this message! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Ohhh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, let\u2019s listen in. Here\u2019s Ann Wilson, talking to women on board the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise a few years back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> Message]\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Finally, we\u2019re together! [Laughter] I have been giddy about us being together. Speaking to women is one of my favorite things, and it\u2019s not because I feel like I have anything, really, that great to say; but it\u2019s because, when we get together as women, there is a sense of: \u201cI\u2019m not the only one going through things.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to take you through my journey, that has been a difficult journey for me, of learning how to love, support, and respect Dave. And I\u2019m going to be very truthful. When I was growing up, my mom was this <em>amazing<\/em> mother. I didn\u2019t grow up in a Christian home, but my mom was probably the greatest servant I\u2019ve ever witnessed then and now in my life.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe would do for my dad; she would serve my dad. He took advantage of it and took her for granted. It made me angry; and I felt like, \u201cMom, stop being so nice to him!\u00a0You are enabling him to be lazy.\u201d As I got older, I was angry with her. She would say, \u201cI like doing this for your dad.\u201d But I saw her as a doormat, and I didn\u2019t respect her for it; and I didn\u2019t get it.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, when we came to speak for FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014I was only 29 when we came on; we\u2019d been married 10 years\u2014so as a 30-year-old, I\u2019m getting up here, addressing women. I\u2019ll <em>never<\/em> forget pulling out the notes and, for the first time, studying what I was going to say and figuring out what I was going to say. In the notes\u2014if you\u2019ve ever been to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014you\u2019ll see that one of the first things that we teach in FamilyLife is Genesis: how it says that God has called the woman to be a helper to the man.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m looking at that; and I keep looking at the word, \u201chelper.\u201d\u00a0Here is what I think: \u201cWhere is <em>my<\/em> helper?! [Laughter] Why does the husband get a helper?!\u00a0Why don\u2019t we get a helper, as the women?\u201d\u00a0See, you guys, I told you I\u2019m not nice! [Laughter]\u00a0So, you know, I am sitting there like\u2014so then I think, \u201cYou know what? Maybe I just have the wrong definition for the helper.\u201d\u00a0I look it up in the dictionary; it says: \u201cA go-for.\u201d [Laughter] \u201cA person who does the dirty work. Someone important tells them what to do.\u201d\u00a0I\u2019m like, \u201cSee!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m talking to Dave, and I\u2019m like, \u201cHoney, I don\u2019t think I can speak for FamilyLife; because I don\u2019t like that I don\u2019t get a helper.\u201d\u00a0\u201cAnn! You need to understand what it means in Hebrew. The word, \u2018helper,\u2019 means \u2018completer.\u2019 You help to <em>complete<\/em> me.\u201d And then, I\u2019m like, \u201cOkay; alright. I get <em>that<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo this whole journey, as you can see by that illustration, has not been easy for me. I seem to be that person that learns the hard way.\u00a0Dave and I had been married probably about 15 years\u201410 to 15 years\u2014and I was asked to speak at our church to the MOPS group\/the Mothers of Preschoolers. I was going; and I said, \u201cHoney, why don\u2019t you come with me?\u00a0That would be fun. We should do it together. The women would get a guy\u2019s perspective,\u201d\u2014 because they wanted us to speak on marriage.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDave starts\u2014he starts getting into this\u2014and he\u2019s speaking to all these women. He\u2019s talking and he goes, \u201cLadies, I want you to know what it\u2019s like to be a man. You see, as little boys here is what happens: we grow up, and we usually have moms\u201d\u2014and he grew up in a single-[parent home]; his mom raised him as a single mom\u2014\u201cMy mom was cheering for me like, \u2018Good job, David! Good job!\u2019\u00a0I liked that; and little boys are always saying, \u2018Mom, watch. Watch!\u2019\u00a0Your moms are always saying, \u2018Good! Way to go!\u00a0Good job!\u2019\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cAnd then, we get older, as guys. We go into middle school, and high school, and elementary school, and we usually start to find what we are good in. And there is usually someone along the line\u2014a teacher\/a coach\u2014or something that we\u2019re good at that we start hearing other people applaud for: \u2018Yes!\u00a0Good job!\u00a0You\u2019re the man.\u2019\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I had never heard Dave say any of this before. I\u2019m like, \u201cWhoa! Look at this. This is some new stuff. This is good!\u201d\u00a0[Laughter] He says, \u201cAnd I played college football. Every Saturday,\u201d\u2014and he was a quarterback\u2014\u201cI had a stadium of people like, \u2018Dave Wilson is the man!\u00a0Yes!\u00a0Yes!\u2019\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cAnd then, we start dating, and we meet you. And you\u2019re saying to us, \u2018You are the man!\u00a0You are the man!\u00a0Out of all the men in the universe, I choose you.\u2019\u00a0And you\u2019re applauding, \u2018Yes!\u00a0Yes!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then he goes [deadpan voice], \u201cAnd then, we get married.\u201d\u00a0[Laughter]\u00a0\u00a0Now, I\u2019m over here in the chair, like, \u201cWhere are you going with this now?\u201d\u00a0[Laughter] He goes, \u201cWe get married, and it feels like we walk in the door of our homes, and all we hear is \u2018BOOO! BOOO!\u2019\u201d [Laughter] He looks at me, at this point, and I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat?!\u201d [Laughter] And then, he feels really bad; he\u2019s like, \u201cOh, we haven\u2019t really talked about this.\u201d\u00a0I\u2019m clueless; clueless; so we kind of get in this fight, right there. I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat do you mean I boo?!\u00a0I\u2019m not booing you.\u201d [Laughter] It was <em>terrible<\/em>\/like <em>so<\/em> terrible.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe get in the car; I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat was that about?!\u201d\u00a0[Laughter] I said, \u201cYou feel like I boo you?\u201d\u00a0He goes, \u201cYes, I feel like you\u2019re continually disappointed. I feel like I do something, and you\u2019re always critiquing it.\u201d\u00a0So then, I get really defensive; and I said, \u201cI am <em>helping<\/em> you!\u201d [Laughter] Because my heart is really\/truly\u2014it\u2019s not to harm him\u2014I said, \u201cHoney, I\u2019m telling you that people are not speaking the truth to you; and I <em>will<\/em>. [Laughter] I am a gift to you!\u201d\u2014right?\u2014don\u2019t you feel like that?\u2014\u201cI am your <em>gift<\/em>!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s like, \u201cAll I hear is boo,\u201d which then takes me on this journey of getting in the Word.\u00a0I come across Proverbs 21:9; it says: \u201cIt\u2019s better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.\u201d Alright; I live in Michigan. I\u2019m imagining, when I read this, the middle of winter; and I\u2019m imagining Dave on the corner of my roof, in the snow, shuttering cold; and it\u2019s better for him to be out there than in the house with me; ugh!\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I was thinking, too\u2014as I started studying for FamilyLife and thinking about what I would say as a speaker\u2014and I remember reading Ephesians 5:33. Let me tell you\u2014I love Ephesians; it\u2019s the most practical book in the Bible\u2014I feel like one of them\u2014because the first three chapters\u2014it\u2019s six chapters\u2014the first three chapters are all about doctrine\/theology: \u201cThis is the truth. This is who God is. This is who He says we are.\u201d\u00a0Then the last three chapters are all about practical application of that truth; so \u201cHere is the truth; now, here is how to apply the truth.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Ephesians, we find out what we\u2019re called to be, as women; what men are called to be, as husbands; as parents. It ends, in Chapter 6, with putting on the armor of God; like we can\u2019t do it without the armor.\u00a0In Ephesians 5:33, when it talks about\u2014you\u2019ve heard this so much: how the man should love his wife; how the woman should respect her husband\u2014I put down in here the Amplified version, because I feel like it\u2019s much more direct and descriptive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt says this\u2014the beginning of it says: \u201cHowever, let each man of you love his wife as his very own self,\u201d\u2014and here it is\u2014\u201cand let the wife see that she respects and reverences her husband.\u201d\u00a0What does that mean?\u00a0\u201cShe notices him, regards him, honors him, prefers him, venerates and esteems him. She defers to him, praises him, and loves and admires him exceedingly.\u201d\u00a0When I look at that, I think, \u201cGod, I want to do that; but what does that look like?\u201d\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst of all, I would say this: \u201cWe can intentionally choose God\u2019s design, or we can unintentionally fall into the culture\u2019s demise.\u201d\u00a0\u201cWhat is God\u2019s design?\u201d\u2014that\u2019s what we\u2019re going to look at\u2014but you do know what culture\u2019s design is; don\u2019t you think that our culture tells us: \u201cIt\u2019s 50-50\u201d? Here is the problem\u2014here is what I do, even when I <em>know<\/em> the right way: if Dave isn\u2019t doing his part\u2014if he\u2019s not giving 50\u2014I think, \u201cHe\u2019s not giving 50; he\u2019s giving 30.\u201d So then, I give 30. \u201cHe\u2019s doing <em>nothing<\/em>; so why should I do anything?\u201d\u00a0That\u2019s what the culture tells us: \u201cIt\u2019s all about <em>us<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat is God\u2019s game plan?\u00a0Proverbs 14:1 says, \u201cThe wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands, the foolish one tears it down.\u201d\u00a0When I think about that, I think, \u201cHow am I building my house?\u00a0What am I doing right now that I am building it?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I\u2019ll never forget Andy Stanley saying this: \u201cYour husband should be able to tell how much God loves him by the way you treat him, and love him, and admire him.\u00a0Your husband may have no idea what God is like, but he should be able to know by the way that you <em>treat<\/em> him. By the way you <em>respect<\/em> him, he will have a glimpse of how much God <em>adores<\/em> him.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what we do, as women\/we are like, \u201cCan I go work in the children\u2019s wing in the church instead of that?\u201d because that\u2019s so much harder; isn\u2019t it?\u2014\u201cHe should know how much God loves him by the way we treat him.\u201d Let me tell you\u2014in Ephesians, it says this: \u201cSubmit to one another out of\u201d\u2014this is the part: \u201cout of\u201d\u2014anybody know what the next part is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>\u2014\u201creverence.\u201d\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014\u201creverence\u201d for whom?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cGod.\u201d\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cfor God.\u201d\u00a0Who do we do it for?\u2014why do we love him?\u2014because he deserves it?\u2014no!\u2014because God deserves it! It\u2019s our devotion; it\u2019s our way of <em>serving<\/em> Him.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt starts with, first of all, our attitudes. What does respect look like to your man? It demonstrates respect by, first of all, your attitude. Look at Ephesians 4:22-24:\u00a0\u201cYou were taught, with regard to your former way of life\u201d\u2014look at this part\u2014\u201cto put off our old self\u201d\u2014why?\u2014\u201cwhich is being corrupted by its deceitful desires, to be made new in the\u201d\u2014first, what\u2019s that word?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cattitude.\u201d\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cattitude of your minds, and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you ever find yourself griping in your head and complaining? I will <em>never<\/em> forget\u2014I was so mad at Dave\u2014he had been gone so much; I felt like he wasn\u2019t helping. I felt like he wasn\u2019t listening to me. I remember folding the laundry; I remember folding, and the whole time, I\u2019m building like this whole scenario of like: \u201cHe doesn\u2019t do anything! He\u2019s lazy,\u201d and \u201cHe doesn\u2019t notice me!\u201d\u00a0I mean, I\u2019m folding it and folding it. I felt like God said to me:\u00a0\u201cWhat would happen if you <em>prayed<\/em> as much as you complained in your head?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Oh!\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Yes! As we think about our husbands, it turns into action; but it starts right here in our minds.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that we don\u2019t realize, and we forget the influence and the <em>power<\/em> that we have, as women. We have so much power to make them <em>great<\/em>, and we have the power to <em>crush<\/em> them in an <em>instant<\/em>. It\u2019s a heady responsibility that we have, and God has given it to us and <em>entrusted<\/em> it to us. He has chosen <em>you<\/em>\u2014He has chosen <em>me<\/em>\u2014to help make [our] husband the man that He wants. I don\u2019t know if I can do it sometimes, and I know I can\u2019t apart from His Spirit.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat does an attitude look like?\u2014an attitude of unconditional respect.\u00a0It says that God commands the wives to respect our husbands without conditions\/without him earning it. He is God\u2019s gift to us and comes with a blessing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is an attitude of honor.\u00a0Our culture treats men like they are <em>stupid<\/em>; and we, as women, can treat men like they are <em>stupid<\/em>. When we treat them as if they are stupid, they will act like they are stupid. Honestly, I think that\u2014this is so embarrassing\u2014I think\/sometimes I feel like, \u201cI\u2019m just smarter than Dave\u201d; you know?\u00a0We\u2019re better communicators; and I think we get prideful, as women. We treat our husbands like they are not as great as they really are.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI read this quote by Stu Weber; he said, \u201cA woman can so easily crush a man\u2019s spirit with a word, with a look, with a shrug of indifference. Her cynicism is utterly emasculating and, many times, incredibly subtle. Like a fine, thin blade, it slices deep, penetrating to the very core of his masculine soul.\u201d\u00a0Ahh!\u00a0Those are <em>hard<\/em> words to hear.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlso, Dave and I\u2014I mean, this is just a terrible illustration\u2014Dave was on the phone. He had made a hotel reservation for some friends coming in. I was in the other room, and I could hear him talking on the phone. I could tell that they lost the reservation\/that they didn\u2019t take the reservation. Dave was being really nice; he\u2019s like, \u201cOkay, well, do you think that there is another room we could get?\u201d\u00a0I am instantly\u2014this is terrible\u2014I\u2019m instantly like, \u201cI can handle this!\u201d\u2014like\u2014\u201cI will get this done.\u201d\u00a0[Laughter] Are you guys, any of you, like that? [Laughter]\u00a0I walk in there; and I\u2019m like, \u201cDave, give me the phone! Just give me the phone!\u201d This is the <em>attitude<\/em>\u2014you know?\u2014like, \u201cI can do these things. I\u2019m better than you; I\u2019m better than you.\u201d\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe gets <em>so mad<\/em>\u2014he takes the phone; he throws it on the ground; and he walks out of the room\u2014he doesn\u2019t usually do that. I will tell you\u2014here are the first signs that you know that you\u2019ve disrespected your man\u2014one of two things\u2014anger or they stonewall.\u00a0I should have known instantly. I didn\u2019t know any of this stuff back then, but I should have known <em>instantly<\/em> I so disrespected him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next thing, he walked out of the room. Here is what he says, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you just cut it off, Ann?!\u201d\u00a0[Emotion in voice] That\u2019s embarrassing to me that I would be so prideful\u2014thinking that I\u2019m so: \u201cI can get that done,\u201d\u2014that I would <em>emasculate<\/em> him like that\u2014\u201cWho cares?\u00a0It\u2019s a hotel room, Ann!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have the power to make him <em>great<\/em>, and I have the power to <em>crush him<\/em>. I\u2019m embarrassed to tell you that story. I apologized to him later, because it was so flagrant that I could see it so clearly. That\u2019s what I mean by: \u201cI learn the hard way sometimes.\u201d So how are you doing? I want you to grade yourself on a 1-5 [scale], 5 being great; 1 being not so great.\u00a0How are you doing with your attitude in respecting your husband?\u00a0Just kind of, mentally, think, \u201cWhere am I?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it\u2019s funny; I think about my parents\/how I said that my mom was a doormat. They have become believers and, for the last nine years, my mom has been struggling with Alzheimer\u2019s. [Emotion in voice]\u00a0 One of the most inspiring things I\u2019ve ever seen in my life is watching my dad\u2014who I felt like was so self-centered\/who took her for granted; but my mom just loved him, and served him, and believed in him, and cheered for him\u2014to watch him\/he does everything for her! She only recognizes two people: my dad and me. He puts lotion on her arms; he cooks all of her food; he does all the laundry; he cleans the house\u2014things that I\u2019ve never in my life seen him do! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI told him, \u201cDad, I respect you so much!\u201d He\u2019s like, \u201cHow could I <em>not<\/em>?\u201d He said, \u201cShe\u2019s my partner; she\u2019s my girl. And she\u2019s loved me so well her whole life. How could I not do the same thing for her?\u2014because she\u2019s made me who I am.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe parts that\u2014when I looked at her, I thought were so <em>weak<\/em>\u2014my dad told me she would come to him, and she would always speak her mind in the bedroom, with respect. Just because she wasn\u2019t ranting and railing, as I was doing in the other room. [Laughter] I want to be that! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it starts with our surrender to Jesus! Can I tell you how much He loves you?\u2014how He knows you?\u2014how He sees you?\u2014how He longs to walk with you and comfort you?\u2014how He longs to encourage you and use you? All of your gifts\/all of your wonderful traits\u2014He sees them. Let Him be your best friend! Let Him be your Redeemer and your Savior! Let Him change us! We can make a world of difference, because our greatest witnessing tool in the future will be your marriage. We, as women, are powerful! Let us surrender to the King, who can give us the strength and power we need to become the women He wants us to be!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we have been listening to Ann Wilson, addressing a roomful\/a ballroom full of women. You were fired up!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I was a <em>little<\/em> excited; wasn\u2019t I?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were; but there\u2019s something about wanting to challenge, and encourage, and motivate these women to be God\u2019s women; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> That\u2019s right; I\u2019m pretty passionate about it. And yes, sometimes I get pretty amped about it too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> That\u2019s awesome! I don\u2019t know what you said, but I\u2019m ready to go: \u201cLet\u2019s go take the world.\u201d And, by the way, I have a little secret I know about what happened that day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I <em>think<\/em> this is true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I have <em>no<\/em> idea what you\u2019re going to say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We\u2019ll have to find out, because the man who I heard this from is sitting beside me. I think part of it is because we\u2019re all struggling with the same thing: and we can admit it; and we can laugh about it; and we can cry about it. It is fun!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And your goal in this message is to talk about how important and how <em>powerful<\/em> it is for a wife to be committed to supporting, affirming, believing in her husband; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Right; we\u2019re going to talk about attitude, our words, our actions, and how to support and respect our men when it\u2019s not always easy to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I really like this message! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Ohhh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, let\u2019s listen in. Here\u2019s Ann Wilson, talking to women on board the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise a few years back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> Message]\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Finally, we\u2019re together! [Laughter] I have been giddy about us being together. Speaking to women is one of my favorite things, and it\u2019s not because I feel like I have anything, really, that great to say; but it\u2019s because, when we get together as women, there is a sense of: \u201cI\u2019m not the only one going through things.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to take you through my journey, that has been a difficult journey for me, of learning how to love, support, and respect Dave. And I\u2019m going to be very truthful. When I was growing up, my mom was this <em>amazing<\/em> mother. I didn\u2019t grow up in a Christian home, but my mom was probably the greatest servant I\u2019ve ever witnessed then and now in my life.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe would do for my dad; she would serve my dad. He took advantage of it and took her for granted. It made me angry; and I felt like, \u201cMom, stop being so nice to him!\u00a0You are enabling him to be lazy.\u201d As I got older, I was angry with her. She would say, \u201cI like doing this for your dad.\u201d But I saw her as a doormat, and I didn\u2019t respect her for it; and I didn\u2019t get it.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, when we came to speak for FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014I was only 29 when we came on; we\u2019d been married 10 years\u2014so as a 30-year-old, I\u2019m getting up here, addressing women. I\u2019ll <em>never<\/em> forget pulling out the notes and, for the first time, studying what I was going to say and figuring out what I was going to say. In the notes\u2014if you\u2019ve ever been to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014you\u2019ll see that one of the first things that we teach in FamilyLife is Genesis: how it says that God has called the woman to be a helper to the man.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m looking at that; and I keep looking at the word, \u201chelper.\u201d\u00a0Here is what I think: \u201cWhere is <em>my<\/em> helper?! [Laughter] Why does the husband get a helper?!\u00a0Why don\u2019t we get a helper, as the women?\u201d\u00a0See, you guys, I told you I\u2019m not nice! [Laughter]\u00a0So, you know, I am sitting there like\u2014so then I think, \u201cYou know what? Maybe I just have the wrong definition for the helper.\u201d\u00a0I look it up in the dictionary; it says: \u201cA go-for.\u201d [Laughter] \u201cA person who does the dirty work. Someone important tells them what to do.\u201d\u00a0I\u2019m like, \u201cSee!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m talking to Dave, and I\u2019m like, \u201cHoney, I don\u2019t think I can speak for FamilyLife; because I don\u2019t like that I don\u2019t get a helper.\u201d\u00a0\u201cAnn! You need to understand what it means in Hebrew. The word, \u2018helper,\u2019 means \u2018completer.\u2019 You help to <em>complete<\/em> me.\u201d And then, I\u2019m like, \u201cOkay; alright. I get <em>that<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo this whole journey, as you can see by that illustration, has not been easy for me. I seem to be that person that learns the hard way.\u00a0Dave and I had been married probably about 15 years\u201410 to 15 years\u2014and I was asked to speak at our church to the MOPS group\/the Mothers of Preschoolers. I was going; and I said, \u201cHoney, why don\u2019t you come with me?\u00a0That would be fun. We should do it together. The women would get a guy\u2019s perspective,\u201d\u2014 because they wanted us to speak on marriage.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDave starts\u2014he starts getting into this\u2014and he\u2019s speaking to all these women. He\u2019s talking and he goes, \u201cLadies, I want you to know what it\u2019s like to be a man. You see, as little boys here is what happens: we grow up, and we usually have moms\u201d\u2014and he grew up in a single-[parent home]; his mom raised him as a single mom\u2014\u201cMy mom was cheering for me like, \u2018Good job, David! Good job!\u2019\u00a0I liked that; and little boys are always saying, \u2018Mom, watch. Watch!\u2019\u00a0Your moms are always saying, \u2018Good! Way to go!\u00a0Good job!\u2019\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cAnd then, we get older, as guys. We go into middle school, and high school, and elementary school, and we usually start to find what we are good in. And there is usually someone along the line\u2014a teacher\/a coach\u2014or something that we\u2019re good at that we start hearing other people applaud for: \u2018Yes!\u00a0Good job!\u00a0You\u2019re the man.\u2019\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I had never heard Dave say any of this before. I\u2019m like, \u201cWhoa! Look at this. This is some new stuff. This is good!\u201d\u00a0[Laughter] He says, \u201cAnd I played college football. Every Saturday,\u201d\u2014and he was a quarterback\u2014\u201cI had a stadium of people like, \u2018Dave Wilson is the man!\u00a0Yes!\u00a0Yes!\u2019\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cAnd then, we start dating, and we meet you. And you\u2019re saying to us, \u2018You are the man!\u00a0You are the man!\u00a0Out of all the men in the universe, I choose you.\u2019\u00a0And you\u2019re applauding, \u2018Yes!\u00a0Yes!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then he goes [deadpan voice], \u201cAnd then, we get married.\u201d\u00a0[Laughter]\u00a0\u00a0Now, I\u2019m over here in the chair, like, \u201cWhere are you going with this now?\u201d\u00a0[Laughter] He goes, \u201cWe get married, and it feels like we walk in the door of our homes, and all we hear is \u2018BOOO! BOOO!\u2019\u201d [Laughter] He looks at me, at this point, and I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat?!\u201d [Laughter] And then, he feels really bad; he\u2019s like, \u201cOh, we haven\u2019t really talked about this.\u201d\u00a0I\u2019m clueless; clueless; so we kind of get in this fight, right there. I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat do you mean I boo?!\u00a0I\u2019m not booing you.\u201d [Laughter] It was <em>terrible<\/em>\/like <em>so<\/em> terrible.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe get in the car; I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat was that about?!\u201d\u00a0[Laughter] I said, \u201cYou feel like I boo you?\u201d\u00a0He goes, \u201cYes, I feel like you\u2019re continually disappointed. I feel like I do something, and you\u2019re always critiquing it.\u201d\u00a0So then, I get really defensive; and I said, \u201cI am <em>helping<\/em> you!\u201d [Laughter] Because my heart is really\/truly\u2014it\u2019s not to harm him\u2014I said, \u201cHoney, I\u2019m telling you that people are not speaking the truth to you; and I <em>will<\/em>. [Laughter] I am a gift to you!\u201d\u2014right?\u2014don\u2019t you feel like that?\u2014\u201cI am your <em>gift<\/em>!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s like, \u201cAll I hear is boo,\u201d which then takes me on this journey of getting in the Word.\u00a0I come across Proverbs 21:9; it says: \u201cIt\u2019s better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.\u201d Alright; I live in Michigan. I\u2019m imagining, when I read this, the middle of winter; and I\u2019m imagining Dave on the corner of my roof, in the snow, shuttering cold; and it\u2019s better for him to be out there than in the house with me; ugh!\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I was thinking, too\u2014as I started studying for FamilyLife and thinking about what I would say as a speaker\u2014and I remember reading Ephesians 5:33. Let me tell you\u2014I love Ephesians; it\u2019s the most practical book in the Bible\u2014I feel like one of them\u2014because the first three chapters\u2014it\u2019s six chapters\u2014the first three chapters are all about doctrine\/theology: \u201cThis is the truth. This is who God is. This is who He says we are.\u201d\u00a0Then the last three chapters are all about practical application of that truth; so \u201cHere is the truth; now, here is how to apply the truth.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Ephesians, we find out what we\u2019re called to be, as women; what men are called to be, as husbands; as parents. It ends, in Chapter 6, with putting on the armor of God; like we can\u2019t do it without the armor.\u00a0In Ephesians 5:33, when it talks about\u2014you\u2019ve heard this so much: how the man should love his wife; how the woman should respect her husband\u2014I put down in here the Amplified version, because I feel like it\u2019s much more direct and descriptive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt says this\u2014the beginning of it says: \u201cHowever, let each man of you love his wife as his very own self,\u201d\u2014and here it is\u2014\u201cand let the wife see that she respects and reverences her husband.\u201d\u00a0What does that mean?\u00a0\u201cShe notices him, regards him, honors him, prefers him, venerates and esteems him. She defers to him, praises him, and loves and admires him exceedingly.\u201d\u00a0When I look at that, I think, \u201cGod, I want to do that; but what does that look like?\u201d\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst of all, I would say this: \u201cWe can intentionally choose God\u2019s design, or we can unintentionally fall into the culture\u2019s demise.\u201d\u00a0\u201cWhat is God\u2019s design?\u201d\u2014that\u2019s what we\u2019re going to look at\u2014but you do know what culture\u2019s design is; don\u2019t you think that our culture tells us: \u201cIt\u2019s 50-50\u201d? Here is the problem\u2014here is what I do, even when I <em>know<\/em> the right way: if Dave isn\u2019t doing his part\u2014if he\u2019s not giving 50\u2014I think, \u201cHe\u2019s not giving 50; he\u2019s giving 30.\u201d So then, I give 30. \u201cHe\u2019s doing <em>nothing<\/em>; so why should I do anything?\u201d\u00a0That\u2019s what the culture tells us: \u201cIt\u2019s all about <em>us<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat is God\u2019s game plan?\u00a0Proverbs 14:1 says, \u201cThe wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands, the foolish one tears it down.\u201d\u00a0When I think about that, I think, \u201cHow am I building my house?\u00a0What am I doing right now that I am building it?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I\u2019ll never forget Andy Stanley saying this: \u201cYour husband should be able to tell how much God loves him by the way you treat him, and love him, and admire him.\u00a0Your husband may have no idea what God is like, but he should be able to know by the way that you <em>treat<\/em> him. By the way you <em>respect<\/em> him, he will have a glimpse of how much God <em>adores<\/em> him.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what we do, as women\/we are like, \u201cCan I go work in the children\u2019s wing in the church instead of that?\u201d because that\u2019s so much harder; isn\u2019t it?\u2014\u201cHe should know how much God loves him by the way we treat him.\u201d Let me tell you\u2014in Ephesians, it says this: \u201cSubmit to one another out of\u201d\u2014this is the part: \u201cout of\u201d\u2014anybody know what the next part is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>\u2014\u201creverence.\u201d\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014\u201creverence\u201d for whom?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cGod.\u201d\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cfor God.\u201d\u00a0Who do we do it for?\u2014why do we love him?\u2014because he deserves it?\u2014no!\u2014because God deserves it! It\u2019s our devotion; it\u2019s our way of <em>serving<\/em> Him.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt starts with, first of all, our attitudes. What does respect look like to your man? It demonstrates respect by, first of all, your attitude. Look at Ephesians 4:22-24:\u00a0\u201cYou were taught, with regard to your former way of life\u201d\u2014look at this part\u2014\u201cto put off our old self\u201d\u2014why?\u2014\u201cwhich is being corrupted by its deceitful desires, to be made new in the\u201d\u2014first, what\u2019s that word?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cattitude.\u201d\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cattitude of your minds, and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you ever find yourself griping in your head and complaining? I will <em>never<\/em> forget\u2014I was so mad at Dave\u2014he had been gone so much; I felt like he wasn\u2019t helping. I felt like he wasn\u2019t listening to me. I remember folding the laundry; I remember folding, and the whole time, I\u2019m building like this whole scenario of like: \u201cHe doesn\u2019t do anything! He\u2019s lazy,\u201d and \u201cHe doesn\u2019t notice me!\u201d\u00a0I mean, I\u2019m folding it and folding it. I felt like God said to me:\u00a0\u201cWhat would happen if you <em>prayed<\/em> as much as you complained in your head?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Oh!\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Yes! As we think about our husbands, it turns into action; but it starts right here in our minds.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that we don\u2019t realize, and we forget the influence and the <em>power<\/em> that we have, as women. We have so much power to make them <em>great<\/em>, and we have the power to <em>crush<\/em> them in an <em>instant<\/em>. It\u2019s a heady responsibility that we have, and God has given it to us and <em>entrusted<\/em> it to us. He has chosen <em>you<\/em>\u2014He has chosen <em>me<\/em>\u2014to help make [our] husband the man that He wants. I don\u2019t know if I can do it sometimes, and I know I can\u2019t apart from His Spirit.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat does an attitude look like?\u2014an attitude of unconditional respect.\u00a0It says that God commands the wives to respect our husbands without conditions\/without him earning it. He is God\u2019s gift to us and comes with a blessing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is an attitude of honor.\u00a0Our culture treats men like they are <em>stupid<\/em>; and we, as women, can treat men like they are <em>stupid<\/em>. When we treat them as if they are stupid, they will act like they are stupid. Honestly, I think that\u2014this is so embarrassing\u2014I think\/sometimes I feel like, \u201cI\u2019m just smarter than Dave\u201d; you know?\u00a0We\u2019re better communicators; and I think we get prideful, as women. We treat our husbands like they are not as great as they really are.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI read this quote by Stu Weber; he said, \u201cA woman can so easily crush a man\u2019s spirit with a word, with a look, with a shrug of indifference. Her cynicism is utterly emasculating and, many times, incredibly subtle. Like a fine, thin blade, it slices deep, penetrating to the very core of his masculine soul.\u201d\u00a0Ahh!\u00a0Those are <em>hard<\/em> words to hear.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlso, Dave and I\u2014I mean, this is just a terrible illustration\u2014Dave was on the phone. He had made a hotel reservation for some friends coming in. I was in the other room, and I could hear him talking on the phone. I could tell that they lost the reservation\/that they didn\u2019t take the reservation. Dave was being really nice; he\u2019s like, \u201cOkay, well, do you think that there is another room we could get?\u201d\u00a0I am instantly\u2014this is terrible\u2014I\u2019m instantly like, \u201cI can handle this!\u201d\u2014like\u2014\u201cI will get this done.\u201d\u00a0[Laughter] Are you guys, any of you, like that? [Laughter]\u00a0I walk in there; and I\u2019m like, \u201cDave, give me the phone! Just give me the phone!\u201d This is the <em>attitude<\/em>\u2014you know?\u2014like, \u201cI can do these things. I\u2019m better than you; I\u2019m better than you.\u201d\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe gets <em>so mad<\/em>\u2014he takes the phone; he throws it on the ground; and he walks out of the room\u2014he doesn\u2019t usually do that. I will tell you\u2014here are the first signs that you know that you\u2019ve disrespected your man\u2014one of two things\u2014anger or they stonewall.\u00a0I should have known instantly. I didn\u2019t know any of this stuff back then, but I should have known <em>instantly<\/em> I so disrespected him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next thing, he walked out of the room. Here is what he says, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you just cut it off, Ann?!\u201d\u00a0[Emotion in voice] That\u2019s embarrassing to me that I would be so prideful\u2014thinking that I\u2019m so: \u201cI can get that done,\u201d\u2014that I would <em>emasculate<\/em> him like that\u2014\u201cWho cares?\u00a0It\u2019s a hotel room, Ann!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have the power to make him <em>great<\/em>, and I have the power to <em>crush him<\/em>. I\u2019m embarrassed to tell you that story. I apologized to him later, because it was so flagrant that I could see it so clearly. That\u2019s what I mean by: \u201cI learn the hard way sometimes.\u201d So how are you doing? I want you to grade yourself on a 1-5 [scale], 5 being great; 1 being not so great.\u00a0How are you doing with your attitude in respecting your husband?\u00a0Just kind of, mentally, think, \u201cWhere am I?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it\u2019s funny; I think about my parents\/how I said that my mom was a doormat. They have become believers and, for the last nine years, my mom has been struggling with Alzheimer\u2019s. [Emotion in voice]\u00a0 One of the most inspiring things I\u2019ve ever seen in my life is watching my dad\u2014who I felt like was so self-centered\/who took her for granted; but my mom just loved him, and served him, and believed in him, and cheered for him\u2014to watch him\/he does everything for her! She only recognizes two people: my dad and me. He puts lotion on her arms; he cooks all of her food; he does all the laundry; he cleans the house\u2014things that I\u2019ve never in my life seen him do! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI told him, \u201cDad, I respect you so much!\u201d He\u2019s like, \u201cHow could I <em>not<\/em>?\u201d He said, \u201cShe\u2019s my partner; she\u2019s my girl. And she\u2019s loved me so well her whole life. How could I not do the same thing for her?\u2014because she\u2019s made me who I am.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe parts that\u2014when I looked at her, I thought were so <em>weak<\/em>\u2014my dad told me she would come to him, and she would always speak her mind in the bedroom, with respect. Just because she wasn\u2019t ranting and railing, as I was doing in the other room. [Laughter] I want to be that! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it starts with our surrender to Jesus! Can I tell you how much He loves you?\u2014how He knows you?\u2014how He sees you?\u2014how He longs to walk with you and comfort you?\u2014how He longs to encourage you and use you? All of your gifts\/all of your wonderful traits\u2014He sees them. Let Him be your best friend! Let Him be your Redeemer and your Savior! Let Him change us! We can make a world of difference, because our greatest witnessing tool in the future will be your marriage. We, as women, are powerful! Let us surrender to the King, who can give us the strength and power we need to become the women He wants us to be!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we have been listening to Ann Wilson, addressing a roomful\/a ballroom full of women.
