He finally just said, \u201cStop; I get it. I know what post-polio is; I know that you might be in a wheelchair\/might be a quadriplegic.\u201d But he said, \u201cAs long as one of us can do stuff, we\u2019ll be fine. If I get a disability, and I can\u2019t do stuff, we can get somebody to do that. I just feel like we have to have this conversation right here, because all week we\u2019ve been hearing about one of the hardest journeys anybody we know has ever been on; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014ever! The suffering has been incredible. You\u2019re hoping\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What we\u2019re going to hear now is\u2014there is a happy story here that we can zero in on. Vaneetha Risner\u2019s joining us, again, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Thank you! It\u2019s great to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Vaneetha is the author of a book called <em>Walking Through Fire<\/em>. We\u2019ve talked about polio this week; we\u2019ve talked about the death of a child this week;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014miscarriages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014we\u2019ve talked about the death of a marriage this week\/infidelity in a marriage relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe haven\u2019t talked about the fact that last night, before you went to bed, you had a square of Dove dark chocolate; right? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>I should have, but I was here; so I did not bring Dove.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>I mean, this is something you do every single night.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Every\u2014I mean, this might be one of five nights I <em>haven\u2019t<\/em> had one, so you know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>I love you! [Laughter] Yes! I need to incorporate this habit. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>You filled it up today with a little chocolate pie\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes, I did; so that was okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>\u2014I saw that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We want to dive into\u2014after all that you had gone through with medical challenges, and the loss of a child, and the death of a marriage and your husband moving out\u2014you\u2019re now a single parent with disabilities, trying to survive. At some point in this journey you said, \u201cI\u2019m going and putting a profile on an online dating site.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Did you say that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>That sounded like a nightmare to me. [Laughter] But my daughter said to me, after I was divorced\u2014I remember she said\u2014\u201cMom, I think you should think about getting married again.\u201d I was like, \u201cI don\u2019t know how to meet anybody, honey.\u201d She said, \u201cYou know, online dating!\u201d I thought, \u201cThat sounds like a nightmare!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really thought it was a lot of psychos out there, and I told her that. She\u2019s like, \u201cThere are normal people out there.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Was she worried about you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>She was. She knew I had <em>loved<\/em> our family; I liked being married; and I also had post-polio. The girls didn\u2019t know what I was going to do when they left.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cWho\u2019s going to take care of Mom?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes; so that was part of it. But they also said they just knew that I liked being married; so my daughter just said, \u201cI think you need to try it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought about it, and it just felt really weird to me; but honestly, it felt less weird than going places and looking to see if people were married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>I mean, I was all about looking at people\u2019s hands, like, \u201cAre you married?\u201d That felt a little creepy at church; you know? [Laughter] I thought, \u201cIt\u2019s probably a little easier to meet on an online site than checking out everybody\u2019s left hand.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you pick out Match.com or ChristianMingle.com, or what\u2019d you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Well, at first, I was on ChristianMingle, and then I got on eHarmony.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>For me, that was a really good site, because you got to tell a lot about yourself. I was on eHarmony, but even that was not working for me for awhile. After two years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; two years. I want to know, \u201cHow many guys did you connect with?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Yes; and I want to know, \u201cAre your girls in this with you?\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Well, sort of. One of my daughters was in college through most of it; the other one was at home. It was just a lot of trudging through some profiles and thinking\u2014I mean, people who can\u2019t spell\u2014I mean, there were some very interesting people I met; let\u2019s just put it that way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>You\u2019re not going to date a guy that can\u2019t spell?\u2014I guess. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Well, he said he was a sweat-loving man. I didn\u2019t know if that meant he loved his own sweat, or he wanted a woman who loved his sweat, or he was a sweet, loving man! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I just have to know if this happened to you during your online dating experience: I had a guy come up to me at the end of church one Sunday\/a widower who had gone on a dating site. He said, \u201cI met somebody.\u201d I said, \u201cTell me about her.\u201d He starts describing her. She\u2019s almost 30 years younger than him. He shows me a picture; she\u2019s a very attractive woman. I said, \u201cIt\u2019s the age thing\u2026\u201d He says, \u201cShe says that\u2019s not a problem for her.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy spider senses started tingling a little bit; okay? [Laughter] I went home and I googled \u201cMay-December online dating,\u201d just to see what popped up. All of a sudden, I saw there are people on these online dating sites, who are looking for lonely widows and widowers for financial\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014for money.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes! Sure enough; it wasn\u2019t long into this relationship that my friend at church got an email saying, \u201cMy mom is in England; she\u2019s about to die. I\u2019m due to inherit a whole bunch of money, but could you lend me the money for the airplane ticket?\u201d He recognized this was a scam.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Well, thanks for just scaring all of our online dating people! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m warning all of our online dating people! There are folks\u2014did you experience anything like this at all?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Nobody 20 years younger than me was after me; I\u2019ll have to admit! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were just getting poor spellers\u2014is all you were getting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes, I was getting sweat-loving men. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you have a two- or three-month correspondence with some people?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes; I mean, there were some people that I got to know, and went out with some, and thought they were fine; but nobody that really had the depth that I was looking for. It just seemed like a lot of people were just in a very different place, spiritually, than me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; two years in, I\u2019d be at a point, where I\u2019d say, \u201cTried it; didn\u2019t work.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>\u201cI\u2019ve tried it\u201d; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Right; that\u2019s exactly where I was. I just said, \u201cI\u2019m going to deactivate from everything that I\u2019m on.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got on eHarmony to deactivate; but the way eHarmony was back then, there would be five slots telling you what had happened with people you had matched with. On my eHarmony profile, right when I was going to deactivate, it said: \u201cJoel has uploaded new pictures.\u201d But each slot said: \u201cJoel has uploaded new pictures,\u201d\u2014five of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought to myself, \u201cJoel is a <em>narcissist<\/em>. [Laughter] But Joel must be extremely attractive, that he wants everyone to see his new pictures!\u201d [Laughter] So I went in to see what this Joel was all about. I clicked on Joel\u2019s profile; and Joel seemed like an <em>amazing<\/em> guy, which shocked me. The first question on eHarmony was: \u201cWhat are you most passionate about?\u201d Joel had answered: \u201cI\u2019m passionate about Jesus Christ, because there\u2019s nothing else to be passionate about\u201d; whereas, a lot of people, honestly, said, I remember: \u201cCountry, God, and family,\u201d and not necessarily in that order. [Laughter] I was like, \u201cOkay; wow.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was not <em>really<\/em> sure about most of the people that I met; but with Joel, he was so clear on his faith. He talked about his late wife and how she was this amazing influence in his life. I remember getting off, thinking, \u201cI wonder why Joel uploaded so many new pictures.\u201d I mean, they were nice pictures; but I didn\u2019t think anything else about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, that afternoon, I think, I got a <em>smile<\/em> from Joel. I was like, \u201cOh my word!\u201d I smiled back at Joel. [Laughter] And that\u2019s when it all started. Joel started\u2014you know, eHarmony has kind of some set questions\u2014so we went back and forth on those. The first free-answer question, where you could ask anything you want, I asked, \u201cWho are your favorite authors and pastors?\u201d That was my favorite question, because that really showed what this person was about and who they respected.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Who he is; yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Here\u2019s what I have to wonder\u2014if, in the back of your head, you had any little voice saying to you\u2014\u201cAlright; this is foolish, because I\u2019m disabled with post-polio. Who\u2019s going to pick me out of the eHarmony lottery?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes; I <em>totally<\/em> said that. When I was in counseling after my husband left, I remember talking to the counselor, saying, \u201cWhat\u2019s the point of being on a dating site? I mean, I have a disadvantage to everybody else out there.\u201d She just said, \u201cSomebody with depth is going to see past all of that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>I asked Joel who his favorite authors and pastors were, and he said John Piper, Paul Tripp, and Kevin DeYoung. That showed me, \u201cTheologically, we\u2019re on the same page.\u201d I was writing then for Desiring God, so that really meant a lot to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just started corresponding, and we started talking on the phone. Then, the weekend before we met, I saw my sister; and she told me, \u201cYou\u2019re going to marry this guy.\u201d I said, \u201cI haven\u2019t even <em>met<\/em> this guy!\u201d She said, \u201cI know, but you\u2019re going to marry him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Did it feel too good to be true? Were you <em>scared<\/em>? Was there a part of you that was like, \u201cCould this be happening?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes! I could not believe it. Joel was everything I ever thought I wanted. He was so kind and so deep. Joel\u2019s a widower and was so caring of his late wife. Before we even met, he made me call his late wife\u2019s best friend and said, \u201cYou need to talk to her.\u201d I first said, \u201cI don\u2019t want to do that; I don\u2019t know her.\u201d He said, \u201cI\u2019m not coming\/I\u2019m not going to meet you, because I could be anybody. Somebody on the internet could be anybody, and you need some kind of verification; so ask her anything you want.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust in talking to <em>her<\/em>, I fell in love with Joel before I even met him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>And then you saw he looked like Brad Pitt; and you were like, \u201cWow!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes; I was like, \u201cSign me up!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>What did your girls think? Were they scared? Were they excited? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>They were excited, but think they weren\u2019t sure at first. You know, when you go through trauma like that, I think it\u2019s hard. It\u2019s hard for them to trust; I think they were worried for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were excited for me, especially Katie, who had wanted me to start dating; and yet, when it becomes a reality, there\u2019s: \u201cHow is this going to change our life?\u201d I think they were excited, but hesitant and worried for me; but they ended up <em>loving<\/em> Joel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What did your ex-husband think when he heard you were on a dating site and that you\u2019d met somebody?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014and was he married by then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>He was married by then, and he said he was really happy for me. I think he really felt bad about the way things had gone. He had sent me a text, really, I think probably a week or two before I met Joel, and said, \u201cI keep praying for you Joel 2:25, that the Lord will restore the years the locust has eaten.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Did you\/where did you meet?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Joel drove from Knoxville, which is where he was living, to Raleigh. We went out to dinner the first night.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you feel like you were in high school again? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes, I totally did! All my friends wanted to meet him\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Of course!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>\u2014\u2014including our pastor. [Laughter] The first weekend he was there, our pastor\u2014I was supposed to have coffee with him and his wife\u2014and he\u2019s [Joel] like, \u201cNo.\u201d I called to cancel; and he [pastor] said, \u201cYou and Joel are coming over to our house.\u201d [Laughter] I was like, \u201cI haven\u2019t even met him yet!\u201d He was like, \u201cAh, it\u2019s perfect! We\u2019ll all meet!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You said you were in love with him before you met.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When he shows up, did you run into his arms, or\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Oh, I would have; but he was playing hard to get then. So then he\u2019s like\/it was so funny; the second night he came over, we were going to go to Tom\u2019s and Carol\u2019s\u2014our pastor\u2019s\u2014house for dessert. I said, \u201cWe have to hurry getting dinner ready.\u201d I wanted to put candles on the table; he\u2019s like, \u201cOh, no, we\u2019re in a hurry; we don\u2019t have time for candles.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo me, it was like, \u201cHow do you not have time for candles?!\u201d [Laughter] I thought he was basically telling me, \u201cNo, I\u2019m not that interested.\u201d Then, that night, he said, \u201cI\u2019m really tired; so after church, I think I\u2019m going to just drive straight home.\u201d I was pretty sure we were\/you know, he just wanted to be friends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He had a nice weekend, but\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes, that was it; so I was <em>so sad<\/em> that night.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next day, though, he said: \u201cI can\u2019t wait to see you again,\u201d and \u201cWhen can I see you?\u201d Yes, so we saw each other almost every weekend after that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>You talked openly about your disabilities: about what that could look like and what that could mean.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes; I mean, I asked him so many times. He finally just said, \u201cStop; I get it. I know what post-polio is; I know that you might be in a wheelchair\/might be a quadriplegic\u201d; but he said, \u201cAs long as one of us can do stuff, we\u2019ll be fine. If I get a disability, and I can\u2019t do stuff, we can get somebody to do that. But what I love about you,\u201d he said, \u201cis who you are, not what you can do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was <em>huge<\/em> for me, just even with the post-polio, realizing I can\u2019t do what I want to do\u2014I can\u2019t serve people\u2014and yet, Joel really reaffirmed that it was me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Having been married to somebody you thought would be faithful\u2014you thought you knew who he was when you got married\u2014it didn\u2019t work out. Here, you\u2019re meeting a guy and you go, \u201cHe seems wonderful, but what if\u2026\u201d Did that little voice ring in the back of your head?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>It did; so I was would just pray, \u201cGod, show me. If Joel is too good to be true, just show me.\u201d It really was reassuring, talking to his late wife\u2019s best friend; I mean, having somebody that really <em>knows<\/em> the person, when it\u2019s somebody online [you\u2019re meeting]. She said, \u201cJoel\u2019s the real deal. He walked through his late wife\u2019s cancer with her, by her side, every minute. He was <em>incredible<\/em>.\u201d She said, \u201cHe knows what suffering is, and he knows what he\u2019s walking into.\u201d Just having that reassurance was huge to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How did he propose?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>We were at my sister\u2019s house; and Joel pretended that he didn\u2019t have the ring, but he actually <em>did<\/em>. Then we\u2019re sitting in the dining room after Thanksgiving meal, and everybody\u2019s gone all of a sudden! Then Joel said, \u201cYou know that book we\u2019re doing in our marriage counseling, <em>The Meaning of Marriage<\/em>? Maybe we need to go look at that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI walked back there, and then I turn around. Joel is on one knee, with a diamond ring, and I couldn\u2019t believe it! It was pretty incredible. I was surrounded with my whole family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How long from the first smile on eHarmony to the ring?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>The first smile was the end of June, and the ring was Thanksgiving, so four months?\u2014five.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How long from Thanksgiving to the altar?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>That was in February, so three months.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s quick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But you know what? I have friends, who just recently got married. Their online meeting to their wedding was about a four-month period. They\u2019re older; they\u2019re both widows\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>There\u2019s a maturity to that love that you <em>know<\/em> what\u2019s ahead.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Oh, yes; I mean, I really could have married Joel in September.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Then you blended your two families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes, we did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>How has that been, and how did your daughters adjust?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>It\u2019s been incredible. I feel like Joel has laid down his life for them, and he has been so thoughtful and kind. He does that for all four girls; he\u2019s just very caring and attentive. I think they really feel loved and feel known, and I think that\u2019s really important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Okay, is there anything that\u2019s been hard? [Laughter] It just sounds like this\u2014and it is\u2014it\u2019s awesome.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>I\u2019m just think, \u201cThe girl <em>deserves<\/em> this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But you had to have some <em>adjustments<\/em> that you had to make\u2014things in the first six months to a year of marriage\u2014where you\u2019re going: \u201cOh, I didn\u2019t know you did that,\u201d or \u201c\u2026you thought that,\u201d or \u201c\u2026you acted this way,\u201d\u2014some of those things that just took you\/they blindsided you a little bit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes; I mean, I think in every relationship, there\u2019s always that\u2014you know, waiting for him to see how perfect I was\u2014and he didn\u2019t <em>see<\/em> that right away, so we had to give him lessons on that. But yes, there\u2019s certainly always, just even mundane things, like: \u201cHow do you hang your towels?\u201d There\u2019s always this adjustment with people. I think we all think of ourselves first and how we do it, and I tend to think the way I do it is right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>You know, just blending families is always challenging; and yet, I think, with the Lord, we\u2019ve been able to really pray about it and talk things through. I\u2019ve really appreciated that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But never a \u201cDid I make a mistake?\u201d moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Not one second; not one second.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, with all we\u2019ve talked about this week\u2014polio, post-polio, death of a child, loss of a marriage, infidelity\u2014good for you! I mean, all of us are kind of like, I\u2019m glad Joel 2:25\u2014you\u2019ve tasted a little bit of that\u2014some of the years that the locust had eaten you\u2019ve seen God restore; haven\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>I\u2019m thinking back\u2014as I read your book\u2014at one point, you said to God, \u201cYou must <em>hate<\/em> me.\u201d That\u2019s a low point when you feel like God must hate you. Then I\u2019m recalling your time in the car, listening to worship music and feeling God\u2019s presence, feeling like He\u2019s holding you. What do you feel now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>I feel like God has taken me to really dark places, but He\u2019s <em>never<\/em> left me. You think about Psalm 23: \u201cEven though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.\u201d I feel like God has been with me through the valley of the shadow of death.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s taught me not to be afraid; because I think that\u2019s what we all think about suffering\u2014is we\u2019re afraid\u2014we\u2019re afraid that the next phone call is going to bring us something that destroys our world. It <em>may<\/em> destroy our physical world\u2014but it\u2019s never going to take away the love of God, and it will <em>never<\/em> take away the presence of God, and it will <em>never<\/em> take away the purposes of God in our life\u2014because those will all stand forever. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI feel like I\u2019ve <em>seen<\/em> that. Joel is the <em>most<\/em> incredible gift; but if God had not given me Joel, God would still be as good; and I would still love God as much, because God has given me <em>Himself<\/em>; and that is better than anything in this world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>It\u2019s interesting\u2014you know, when we were walking down to the studio, and you had said you drank too much water on the airplane, I watched Joel wheel you toward the bathroom\u2014I thought, \u201cWhat a picture, not only of sacrificial love, but of the picture of Christ\/of a man loving his wife like Christ loved the church.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, one of the things you said\u2014I don\u2019t know if you wrote it in the book or not\u2014I don\u2019t know if I missed this, but you said it in one of the messages I watched\u2014you said, \u201cGod will take the hardest things in your life and do something breathtaking in you and through you.\u201d As I\u2019ve listened to your story the last couple of days, I\u2019m like, \u201cThat\u2019s what He\u2019s doing!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m glad we got to tell this part of the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Me too!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; thank you for being here. I hope people will get your book, and read your book, and grow and learn.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Vaneetha, I want to ask a favor\u2014before you close, Bob\u2014will you pray for listeners that are just <em>struggling<\/em> right now that are listening?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOh dear Lord, we just come to You. Lord, we acknowledge that life is hard. Just in the midst of the isolation, and the loneliness, and the pain that is overwhelming at times, Lord, You know. We collectively cry, \u201cHow long, O Lord?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYet, Father, we know You are <em>good<\/em>. We know that, even in this pain, You are drawing people to Yourself. You are showing us who You are, and that life with You is incredible; that You give us so much more in suffering than You could ever take away, because You give us Yourself. That\u2019s what we\u2019re created for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just pray for everyone listening here\u2014that You would draw near to them, Lord\u2014as they open the Bible: that You would come alive, that You would speak to them, that You would show them that they are not alone and they <em>never<\/em> will be; and that You will love them in this life, and You will take them to the next life with\u2014no\/not one moment do we need to be without You. Lord, I pray that that would sink into people\u2019s lives\u2014that there is <em>nothing<\/em> to fear\u2014because You will be with them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLord, we love You; and we thank You for all the things You\u2019ve done in our lives\u2014things we\u2019ve wanted and the things we haven\u2019t\u2014because we know that You will use them all for our good and for Your glory. He finally just said, \u201cStop; I get it. I know what post-polio is; I know that you might be in a wheelchair\/might be a quadriplegic.\u201d But he said, \u201cAs long as one of us can do stuff, we\u2019ll be fine. If I get a disability, and I can\u2019t do stuff, we can get somebody to do that. The suffering has been incredible. You\u2019re hoping\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What we\u2019re going to hear now is\u2014there is a happy story here that we can zero in on. Vaneetha Risner\u2019s joining us, again, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Thank you! It\u2019s great to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Vaneetha is the author of a book called <em>Walking Through Fire<\/em>. We\u2019ve talked about polio this week; we\u2019ve talked about the death of a child this week;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014miscarriages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014we\u2019ve talked about the death of a marriage this week\/infidelity in a marriage relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe haven\u2019t talked about the fact that last night, before you went to bed, you had a square of Dove dark chocolate; right? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>I should have, but I was here; so I did not bring Dove.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>I mean, this is something you do every single night.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Every\u2014I mean, this might be one of five nights I <em>haven\u2019t<\/em> had one, so you know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>I love you! [Laughter] Yes! I need to incorporate this habit. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>You filled it up today with a little chocolate pie\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes, I did; so that was okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>\u2014I saw that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We want to dive into\u2014after all that you had gone through with medical challenges, and the loss of a child, and the death of a marriage and your husband moving out\u2014you\u2019re now a single parent with disabilities, trying to survive. At some point in this journey you said, \u201cI\u2019m going and putting a profile on an online dating site.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Did you say that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>That sounded like a nightmare to me. [Laughter] But my daughter said to me, after I was divorced\u2014I remember she said\u2014\u201cMom, I think you should think about getting married again.\u201d I was like, \u201cI don\u2019t know how to meet anybody, honey.\u201d She said, \u201cYou know, online dating!\u201d I thought, \u201cThat sounds like a nightmare!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really thought it was a lot of psychos out there, and I told her that. She\u2019s like, \u201cThere are normal people out there.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Was she worried about you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>She was. She knew I had <em>loved<\/em> our family; I liked being married; and I also had post-polio. The girls didn\u2019t know what I was going to do when they left.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cWho\u2019s going to take care of Mom?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes; so that was part of it. But they also said they just knew that I liked being married; so my daughter just said, \u201cI think you need to try it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought about it, and it just felt really weird to me; but honestly, it felt less weird than going places and looking to see if people were married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>I mean, I was all about looking at people\u2019s hands, like, \u201cAre you married?\u201d That felt a little creepy at church; you know? [Laughter] I thought, \u201cIt\u2019s probably a little easier to meet on an online site than checking out everybody\u2019s left hand.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you pick out Match.com or ChristianMingle.com, or what\u2019d you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Well, at first, I was on ChristianMingle, and then I got on eHarmony.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>For me, that was a really good site, because you got to tell a lot about yourself. I was on eHarmony, but even that was not working for me for awhile. After two years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; two years. I want to know, \u201cHow many guys did you connect with?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Yes; and I want to know, \u201cAre your girls in this with you?\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Well, sort of. One of my daughters was in college through most of it; the other one was at home. It was just a lot of trudging through some profiles and thinking\u2014I mean, people who can\u2019t spell\u2014I mean, there were some very interesting people I met; let\u2019s just put it that way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>You\u2019re not going to date a guy that can\u2019t spell?\u2014I guess. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Well, he said he was a sweat-loving man. I didn\u2019t know if that meant he loved his own sweat, or he wanted a woman who loved his sweat, or he was a sweet, loving man! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I just have to know if this happened to you during your online dating experience: I had a guy come up to me at the end of church one Sunday\/a widower who had gone on a dating site. He said, \u201cI met somebody.\u201d I said, \u201cTell me about her.\u201d He starts describing her. She\u2019s almost 30 years younger than him. He shows me a picture; she\u2019s a very attractive woman. I said, \u201cIt\u2019s the age thing\u2026\u201d He says, \u201cShe says that\u2019s not a problem for her.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy spider senses started tingling a little bit; okay? [Laughter] I went home and I googled \u201cMay-December online dating,\u201d just to see what popped up. All of a sudden, I saw there are people on these online dating sites, who are looking for lonely widows and widowers for financial\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014for money.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes! Sure enough; it wasn\u2019t long into this relationship that my friend at church got an email saying, \u201cMy mom is in England; she\u2019s about to die. I\u2019m due to inherit a whole bunch of money, but could you lend me the money for the airplane ticket?\u201d He recognized this was a scam.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Well, thanks for just scaring all of our online dating people! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m warning all of our online dating people! There are folks\u2014did you experience anything like this at all?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Nobody 20 years younger than me was after me; I\u2019ll have to admit! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were just getting poor spellers\u2014is all you were getting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes, I was getting sweat-loving men. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you have a two- or three-month correspondence with some people?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes; I mean, there were some people that I got to know, and went out with some, and thought they were fine; but nobody that really had the depth that I was looking for. It just seemed like a lot of people were just in a very different place, spiritually, than me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; two years in, I\u2019d be at a point, where I\u2019d say, \u201cTried it; didn\u2019t work.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>\u201cI\u2019ve tried it\u201d; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Right; that\u2019s exactly where I was. I just said, \u201cI\u2019m going to deactivate from everything that I\u2019m on.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got on eHarmony to deactivate; but the way eHarmony was back then, there would be five slots telling you what had happened with people you had matched with. On my eHarmony profile, right when I was going to deactivate, it said: \u201cJoel has uploaded new pictures.\u201d But each slot said: \u201cJoel has uploaded new pictures,\u201d\u2014five of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought to myself, \u201cJoel is a <em>narcissist<\/em>. [Laughter] But Joel must be extremely attractive, that he wants everyone to see his new pictures!\u201d [Laughter] So I went in to see what this Joel was all about. I clicked on Joel\u2019s profile; and Joel seemed like an <em>amazing<\/em> guy, which shocked me. The first question on eHarmony was: \u201cWhat are you most passionate about?\u201d Joel had answered: \u201cI\u2019m passionate about Jesus Christ, because there\u2019s nothing else to be passionate about\u201d; whereas, a lot of people, honestly, said, I remember: \u201cCountry, God, and family,\u201d and not necessarily in that order. [Laughter] I was like, \u201cOkay; wow.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was not <em>really<\/em> sure about most of the people that I met; but with Joel, he was so clear on his faith. He talked about his late wife and how she was this amazing influence in his life. I remember getting off, thinking, \u201cI wonder why Joel uploaded so many new pictures.\u201d I mean, they were nice pictures; but I didn\u2019t think anything else about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, that afternoon, I think, I got a <em>smile<\/em> from Joel. I was like, \u201cOh my word!\u201d I smiled back at Joel. [Laughter] And that\u2019s when it all started. Joel started\u2014you know, eHarmony has kind of some set questions\u2014so we went back and forth on those. The first free-answer question, where you could ask anything you want, I asked, \u201cWho are your favorite authors and pastors?\u201d That was my favorite question, because that really showed what this person was about and who they respected.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Who he is; yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Here\u2019s what I have to wonder\u2014if, in the back of your head, you had any little voice saying to you\u2014\u201cAlright; this is foolish, because I\u2019m disabled with post-polio. Who\u2019s going to pick me out of the eHarmony lottery?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes; I <em>totally<\/em> said that. When I was in counseling after my husband left, I remember talking to the counselor, saying, \u201cWhat\u2019s the point of being on a dating site? I mean, I have a disadvantage to everybody else out there.\u201d She just said, \u201cSomebody with depth is going to see past all of that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>I asked Joel who his favorite authors and pastors were, and he said John Piper, Paul Tripp, and Kevin DeYoung. That showed me, \u201cTheologically, we\u2019re on the same page.\u201d I was writing then for Desiring God, so that really meant a lot to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just started corresponding, and we started talking on the phone. Then, the weekend before we met, I saw my sister; and she told me, \u201cYou\u2019re going to marry this guy.\u201d I said, \u201cI haven\u2019t even <em>met<\/em> this guy!\u201d She said, \u201cI know, but you\u2019re going to marry him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Did it feel too good to be true? Were you <em>scared<\/em>? Was there a part of you that was like, \u201cCould this be happening?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes! I could not believe it. Joel was everything I ever thought I wanted. He was so kind and so deep. Joel\u2019s a widower and was so caring of his late wife. Before we even met, he made me call his late wife\u2019s best friend and said, \u201cYou need to talk to her.\u201d I first said, \u201cI don\u2019t want to do that; I don\u2019t know her.\u201d He said, \u201cI\u2019m not coming\/I\u2019m not going to meet you, because I could be anybody. Somebody on the internet could be anybody, and you need some kind of verification; so ask her anything you want.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust in talking to <em>her<\/em>, I fell in love with Joel before I even met him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>And then you saw he looked like Brad Pitt; and you were like, \u201cWow!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes; I was like, \u201cSign me up!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>What did your girls think? Were they scared? Were they excited? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>They were excited, but think they weren\u2019t sure at first. You know, when you go through trauma like that, I think it\u2019s hard. It\u2019s hard for them to trust; I think they were worried for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were excited for me, especially Katie, who had wanted me to start dating; and yet, when it becomes a reality, there\u2019s: \u201cHow is this going to change our life?\u201d I think they were excited, but hesitant and worried for me; but they ended up <em>loving<\/em> Joel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What did your ex-husband think when he heard you were on a dating site and that you\u2019d met somebody?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014and was he married by then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>He was married by then, and he said he was really happy for me. I think he really felt bad about the way things had gone. He had sent me a text, really, I think probably a week or two before I met Joel, and said, \u201cI keep praying for you Joel 2:25, that the Lord will restore the years the locust has eaten.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Did you\/where did you meet?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Joel drove from Knoxville, which is where he was living, to Raleigh. We went out to dinner the first night.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you feel like you were in high school again? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes, I totally did! All my friends wanted to meet him\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Of course!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>\u2014\u2014including our pastor. [Laughter] The first weekend he was there, our pastor\u2014I was supposed to have coffee with him and his wife\u2014and he\u2019s [Joel] like, \u201cNo.\u201d I called to cancel; and he [pastor] said, \u201cYou and Joel are coming over to our house.\u201d [Laughter] I was like, \u201cI haven\u2019t even met him yet!\u201d He was like, \u201cAh, it\u2019s perfect! We\u2019ll all meet!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You said you were in love with him before you met.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When he shows up, did you run into his arms, or\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Oh, I would have; but he was playing hard to get then. So then he\u2019s like\/it was so funny; the second night he came over, we were going to go to Tom\u2019s and Carol\u2019s\u2014our pastor\u2019s\u2014house for dessert. I said, \u201cWe have to hurry getting dinner ready.\u201d I wanted to put candles on the table; he\u2019s like, \u201cOh, no, we\u2019re in a hurry; we don\u2019t have time for candles.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo me, it was like, \u201cHow do you not have time for candles?!\u201d [Laughter] I thought he was basically telling me, \u201cNo, I\u2019m not that interested.\u201d Then, that night, he said, \u201cI\u2019m really tired; so after church, I think I\u2019m going to just drive straight home.\u201d I was pretty sure we were\/you know, he just wanted to be friends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He had a nice weekend, but\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes, that was it; so I was <em>so sad<\/em> that night.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next day, though, he said: \u201cI can\u2019t wait to see you again,\u201d and \u201cWhen can I see you?\u201d Yes, so we saw each other almost every weekend after that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>You talked openly about your disabilities: about what that could look like and what that could mean.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes; I mean, I asked him so many times. He finally just said, \u201cStop; I get it. I know what post-polio is; I know that you might be in a wheelchair\/might be a quadriplegic\u201d; but he said, \u201cAs long as one of us can do stuff, we\u2019ll be fine. If I get a disability, and I can\u2019t do stuff, we can get somebody to do that. But what I love about you,\u201d he said, \u201cis who you are, not what you can do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was <em>huge<\/em> for me, just even with the post-polio, realizing I can\u2019t do what I want to do\u2014I can\u2019t serve people\u2014and yet, Joel really reaffirmed that it was me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Having been married to somebody you thought would be faithful\u2014you thought you knew who he was when you got married\u2014it didn\u2019t work out. Here, you\u2019re meeting a guy and you go, \u201cHe seems wonderful, but what if\u2026\u201d Did that little voice ring in the back of your head?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>It did; so I was would just pray, \u201cGod, show me. If Joel is too good to be true, just show me.\u201d It really was reassuring, talking to his late wife\u2019s best friend; I mean, having somebody that really <em>knows<\/em> the person, when it\u2019s somebody online [you\u2019re meeting]. She said, \u201cJoel\u2019s the real deal. He walked through his late wife\u2019s cancer with her, by her side, every minute. He was <em>incredible<\/em>.\u201d She said, \u201cHe knows what suffering is, and he knows what he\u2019s walking into.\u201d Just having that reassurance was huge to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How did he propose?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>We were at my sister\u2019s house; and Joel pretended that he didn\u2019t have the ring, but he actually <em>did<\/em>. Then we\u2019re sitting in the dining room after Thanksgiving meal, and everybody\u2019s gone all of a sudden! Then Joel said, \u201cYou know that book we\u2019re doing in our marriage counseling, <em>The Meaning of Marriage<\/em>? Maybe we need to go look at that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI walked back there, and then I turn around. Joel is on one knee, with a diamond ring, and I couldn\u2019t believe it! It was pretty incredible. I was surrounded with my whole family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How long from the first smile on eHarmony to the ring?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>The first smile was the end of June, and the ring was Thanksgiving, so four months?\u2014five.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How long from Thanksgiving to the altar?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>That was in February, so three months.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s quick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But you know what? I have friends, who just recently got married. Their online meeting to their wedding was about a four-month period. They\u2019re older; they\u2019re both widows\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>There\u2019s a maturity to that love that you <em>know<\/em> what\u2019s ahead.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Oh, yes; I mean, I really could have married Joel in September.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Then you blended your two families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes, we did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>How has that been, and how did your daughters adjust?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>It\u2019s been incredible. I feel like Joel has laid down his life for them, and he has been so thoughtful and kind. He does that for all four girls; he\u2019s just very caring and attentive. I think they really feel loved and feel known, and I think that\u2019s really important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Okay, is there anything that\u2019s been hard? [Laughter] It just sounds like this\u2014and it is\u2014it\u2019s awesome.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>I\u2019m just think, \u201cThe girl <em>deserves<\/em> this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But you had to have some <em>adjustments<\/em> that you had to make\u2014things in the first six months to a year of marriage\u2014where you\u2019re going: \u201cOh, I didn\u2019t know you did that,\u201d or \u201c\u2026you thought that,\u201d or \u201c\u2026you acted this way,\u201d\u2014some of those things that just took you\/they blindsided you a little bit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes; I mean, I think in every relationship, there\u2019s always that\u2014you know, waiting for him to see how perfect I was\u2014and he didn\u2019t <em>see<\/em> that right away, so we had to give him lessons on that. But yes, there\u2019s certainly always, just even mundane things, like: \u201cHow do you hang your towels?\u201d There\u2019s always this adjustment with people. I think we all think of ourselves first and how we do it, and I tend to think the way I do it is right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>You know, just blending families is always challenging; and yet, I think, with the Lord, we\u2019ve been able to really pray about it and talk things through. I\u2019ve really appreciated that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But never a \u201cDid I make a mistake?\u201d moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Not one second; not one second.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, with all we\u2019ve talked about this week\u2014polio, post-polio, death of a child, loss of a marriage, infidelity\u2014good for you! I mean, all of us are kind of like, I\u2019m glad Joel 2:25\u2014you\u2019ve tasted a little bit of that\u2014some of the years that the locust had eaten you\u2019ve seen God restore; haven\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>I\u2019m thinking back\u2014as I read your book\u2014at one point, you said to God, \u201cYou must <em>hate<\/em> me.\u201d That\u2019s a low point when you feel like God must hate you. Then I\u2019m recalling your time in the car, listening to worship music and feeling God\u2019s presence, feeling like He\u2019s holding you. What do you feel now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>I feel like God has taken me to really dark places, but He\u2019s <em>never<\/em> left me. You think about Psalm 23: \u201cEven though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.\u201d I feel like God has been with me through the valley of the shadow of death.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s taught me not to be afraid; because I think that\u2019s what we all think about suffering\u2014is we\u2019re afraid\u2014we\u2019re afraid that the next phone call is going to bring us something that destroys our world. It <em>may<\/em> destroy our physical world\u2014but it\u2019s never going to take away the love of God, and it will <em>never<\/em> take away the presence of God, and it will <em>never<\/em> take away the purposes of God in our life\u2014because those will all stand forever. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI feel like I\u2019ve <em>seen<\/em> that. Joel is the <em>most<\/em> incredible gift; but if God had not given me Joel, God would still be as good; and I would still love God as much, because God has given me <em>Himself<\/em>; and that is better than anything in this world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>It\u2019s interesting\u2014you know, when we were walking down to the studio, and you had said you drank too much water on the airplane, I watched Joel wheel you toward the bathroom\u2014I thought, \u201cWhat a picture, not only of sacrificial love, but of the picture of Christ\/of a man loving his wife like Christ loved the church.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, one of the things you said\u2014I don\u2019t know if you wrote it in the book or not\u2014I don\u2019t know if I missed this, but you said it in one of the messages I watched\u2014you said, \u201cGod will take the hardest things in your life and do something breathtaking in you and through you.\u201d As I\u2019ve listened to your story the last couple of days, I\u2019m like, \u201cThat\u2019s what He\u2019s doing!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m glad we got to tell this part of the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Me too!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; thank you for being here. I hope people will get your book, and read your book, and grow and learn.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Vaneetha, I want to ask a favor\u2014before you close, Bob\u2014will you pray for listeners that are just <em>struggling<\/em> right now that are listening?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vaneetha: <\/strong>Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOh dear Lord, we just come to You. Lord, we acknowledge that life is hard. Just in the midst of the isolation, and the loneliness, and the pain that is overwhelming at times, Lord, You know. We collectively cry, \u201cHow long, O Lord?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYet, Father, we know You are <em>good<\/em>. We know that, even in this pain, You are drawing people to Yourself. You are showing us who You are, and that life with You is incredible; that You give us so much more in suffering than You could ever take away, because You give us Yourself. That\u2019s what we\u2019re created for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just pray for everyone listening here\u2014that You would draw near to them, Lord\u2014as they open the Bible: that You would come alive, that You would speak to them, that You would show them that they are not alone and they <em>never<\/em> will be; and that You will love them in this life, and You will take them to the next life with\u2014no\/not one moment do we need to be without You. Lord, I pray that that would sink into people\u2019s lives\u2014that there is <em>nothing<\/em> to fear\u2014because You will be with them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLord, we love You; and we thank You for all the things You\u2019ve done in our lives\u2014things we\u2019ve wanted and the things we haven\u2019t\u2014because we know that You will use them all for our good and for Your glory.
