Because I would love to open the phone lines and say, \u201cIf God has used John Piper in your life in some way, call and share the story with us.\u201d Then, we could sit here and hear the testimony. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I want to hear what <em>you<\/em> would say, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I could come up with a whole bunch of them. We were sharing about things I\u2019ve heard you say, Dr. Piper. Welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> Thank you; thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We were talking about things I\u2019ve heard you say and things I\u2019ve read. I remember being at the very first <em>Together for the Gospel<\/em> event, where you spoke. Here\u2019s the thing that slayed me at the end; you said, \u201cI\u2019m afraid today there are people who, if you went to them and said, \u2018Would you like to go to heaven, where there\u2019s streets of gold, and you\u2019re reunited with your family, and there\u2019s no more sorrow, and there\u2019s no more night?\u2014but, oh, by the way, Jesus won\u2019t be there\u2019; there are a lot of people who would say, \u201cOkay; that\u2019s okay.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> Yes; they\u2019d, at least, feel it if they wouldn\u2019t have the courage to say it. The point of that was: \u201cOnce you have said that: \u2018The gospel is an <em>event<\/em> in history,\u2019 \u2018The gospel is an <em>achievement<\/em> of atoning for sin,\u2019 and \u2018The gospel is an <em>offer<\/em>; you can have it by faith alone\u2019\u2014and once you have said\u2014\u2018It gets you heaven,\u2019 and \u2018It gets you out of hell,\u2019 and \u2018It gets you a clear conscience,\u2019\u2014are you done sharing the gospel?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve pointed out we\u2019re not done <em>because<\/em>\u2014for carnal, unbelieving, even Satanic reasons\u2014you could lack a clear conscience. You would want out of hell; I mean, what unbeliever does not want to go to hell? But not want to love, and be with, and enjoy Jesus forever\u2014that would be a foreign language to a lot of people\u2014\u201cI would be more happy in the presence of Jesus <em>than\u2026<\/em>\u201d\u2014then fill in the blank\u2014because the blank is supposed to be <em>everything<\/em>. So yes; exactly; the gospel is not finished\/the good news is not finished until Christ Himself, as our Friend and our Treasure, is our satisfaction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Bob, that message marked you, though. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was a paradigm shift in my own life. First, I came under conviction as I heard it; because I thought, \u201cI\u2018ve thought that way.\u201d Then secondly, I thought, \u201cI\u2019ve got to be an ambassador for this truth for others.\u201d I\u2019ve shared a clip from that with people in church and various settings and have repeated that over and over again. Thank you for that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t know we were going to do the John Piper <em>quote<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the tributes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s like sitting here with one of the Beatles; and we\u2019re going to go to a lyric and say, \u201cWhat did you mean by this?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of my favorite\u2014and I don\u2019t know when you said it\/how many years ago\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Don\u2019t ask him!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I won\u2019t ask him. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know a core part of your identity and your teaching is\u2014I think I\u2019ll get this right\u2014\u201cGod is most glorified in me when I am most satisfied in Him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Talk about that; because that struck me, years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> That is the essence\/the foundational statement of what I call \u201cChristian Hedonism: God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.\u201d What it shows is that the two great passions of the universe are not in competition; and they are this: \u201cGod\u2019s passion is to be glorified. We were created by God to glorify God,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIsaiah 43:7: \u201cBring my sons and my daughters from the ends of the earth, everyone who I\u2019ve created for my glory,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s <em>the biggest<\/em>, all-consuming, all-pervasive passion in the universe. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, around these tables and in every one of our listeners, is the passion to be happy. You cannot <em>not<\/em> want to be happy; it\u2019s like hunger in the soul. Nobody wants to be unhappy, whatever they define happiness. They just want to be happy and not hurting. I grew up feeling like God\u2019s desire to be glorified and my desire to be happy were <em>somehow <\/em>at odds. That sentence that you just quoted is the biblical answer to how that\u2019s not true\u2014that the Bible really is good news\u2014that when we are born again, God becomes our treasure and our pleasure. In becoming our supreme treasure and our highest pleasure, He gets glorified. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll we have to do is ask: \u201cHow do you glorify something by calling it \u2018unsavory\u2019?\u2014calling it \u2018unpleasant\u2019?\u2014calling it \u2018unsatisfying\u2019? No; that gets no glory for <em>anything<\/em>. A lot of people try to embrace God\u2014and don\u2019t feel like He\u2019s a pleasure; they don\u2019t feel like He\u2019s a treasure or satisfying\u2014and they don\u2019t, therefore, bring Him the glory that He should have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod gets the <em>most<\/em> glory that He should have from souls that are most satisfied in Him. I get fully satisfied; God gets fully glorified, and that\u2019s the best of all possible worlds. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And you\u2019re happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You have just completed\u2014and we\u2019re going to spend some time this week talking about a book that\u2014it\u2019s not just a book\u2014it\u2019s a tome. This is something you\u2019ve taken <em>years<\/em> to write on the subject of providence. Why this subject for a long-term investment and a book that is hundreds of pages?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> Yes, 700 to be precise. Probably because, over the last 50 years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t52 years since God did a great work in my heart in the fall of \u201968 and subsequent years\u2014the power of God, the authority of God, the bigness of God, the freedom of God, the purposes of God, the overarching glory and beauty of God with His all-controlling sovereignty at the center, revolutionized my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to be a God-besotted\/God-entranced person. I don\u2019t think\u2014and I want you to be that, Ann, Dave, Bob\u2014I want you all to <em>be<\/em> that. I want <em>thousands<\/em> of other people to be God-entranced and \u2013saturated\/besotted with God so that, everywhere they look, they see God. Everything they deal with is dealt with in the light of God. There isn\u2019t any other doctrine that brings you to that point better than the providence of God; there isn\u2019t any.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe providence of God\u2014implying His control, supervision, guidance, authority over all things, from the dropping of a bird out of a tree\u2014that\u2019s what Jesus said [paraphrase]\u2014\u201cNot a bird\u201d\u2014not a bird in unseen forests of Brazil\u2014\u201cdrops out of a tree without your Father\u2019s design and presence and purpose.\u201d When you think about: \u201cWhoa; that was <em>His<\/em> way of talking about molecules, atoms, sub-atomic particles. He wasn\u2019t going to drop that on people\u2014they didn\u2019t know what they [those words] were talking about\u2014but they knew birds\/billions of birds, all over the world, dropping out of trees when their time is up. And God is ruling that? If He\u2019s ruling that, and the hairs of my head are all numbered, the implications of that are absolutely staggering.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s both getting a God-entranced vision of life and then <em>all<\/em> the implications, which I\u2019m sure we\u2019ll talk about over these days, of that kind of God being my God, ruling my life, overseeing my happiness and sorrow\u2014it\u2019s just all transforming. It had been at the root of my life. I said, \u201cNow, here I am. If I wait much longer, I\u2019m going to be in the grave; I won\u2019t get this done.\u201d I turned 72 and said, \u201cIt\u2019s got to be done now or never, so I\u2019ve got to put it all together.\u201d It feels like a book, to me, which is the gathering together of pretty much all I\u2019ve ever <em>thought<\/em> into one place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Is there a difference between providence and sovereignty?\u2014are they subsets?\u2014how do they work together?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> In my vocabulary, there\u2019s a difference. I think, in most thoughtful Bible readers, there\u2019s a difference. The difference is this: sovereignty signifies God\u2019s power and authority to do whatever He wills. Providence says, \u201cYes,\u201d\u2014and adds\u2014\u201cHe does it purposefully, wisely, as a good and caring, providing\/providing providence God.\u201d I define providence as <em>purposeful<\/em> sovereignty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> At the same time, the average listener will go, \u201cWell, then, do I have <em>any<\/em> free will? Is <em>everything<\/em> controlled?\u201d How do you answer that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> I begin by looking at the person and saying, \u201cYou\u2019re going to have to define what you mean by free will before I can answer,\u201d which really stumps most people; because they haven\u2019t thought about it. They\u2019ll say something like, \u201cWell, you know, I choose. I choose. I really choose, and my choosing counts.\u201d So free will understood is just: \u201cI choose, and I\u2019m responsible.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would say, \u201cAbsolutely that exists, and God\u2019s providence does not contradict it.\u201d God doesn\u2019t cause you to act in a way that is coercive\/that is contrary to your will and hold you accountable\u2014what you did with your arm twisted behind your back: \u201cI don\u2019t want to do this! I don\u2019t want to do this!\u201d and God is making you do this, and He holds you accountable for it\u2014it just doesn\u2019t work that way. God\u2019s <em>way<\/em> of governing the will includes you\u2019re doing the act; and yet, He\u2019s governing the doing of the act. In there is a mystery\u2014that all the way back to the beginning of the first sin, I don\u2019t have a final answer for\u2014so that exists. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>But<\/em> it\u2019s really important to give this <em>second<\/em> definition, because lots of people think this exists when it doesn\u2019t; namely, philosophers, or people who disagree with my theology with a lot of understanding, would say, \u201cHuman beings have the power of ultimate self-determination.\u201d Here\u2019s what I mean. You come to the point of your conversion; say you\u2019ve been convicted\u2014and you\u2019re going for days, weeks, months\u2014whatever it is. You get to a crisis point\u2014on this side is unbelief; on that side of the moment is belief\u2014at that very moment, do you have the power of ultimate self-determination?\u2014you do <em>not<\/em>; God does. God is the only One, who at that <em>decisive<\/em> act, calls the shots. That divides theology; that divides people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would say, and this book is devoted to showing it\u2019s all over the Bible, that at that moment, God is the only One with such free will\/such free will. That is ultimate self-determination. Human beings <em>never<\/em> have ultimate self-determination. If that\u2019s what somebody means by free will, we don\u2019t have it. If somebody means, by the former: \u201cMy choices are real; I\u2019m really accountable\u201d; therefore, I do have it; and it doesn\u2019t contradict providence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You wrote a book years ago\u2014a series of books\/spiritual biographies\u2014the <em>Swans Are Not Silent<\/em> series, which I have benefitted from. One of the series was on the subject of providence. I remember reading about William Cowper, who wrote the hymn <em>God Works in Mysterious Ways<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> [Correction] <em>God Moves in a Mysterious Way<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And in that hymn there is this line about the \u201cfrowning providence of God,\u201d and \u201cBehind His frowning providence, He hides a smile.\u201d The whole idea that God might have this frowning providence seems to be <em>contrary<\/em> to how we\u2019re supposed to understand the goodness of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> Let\u2019s linger there for a minutes then. The frowning face of God, which exists towards <em>believers<\/em>, can be owing to His Fatherly discipline. Hebrews 12: \u201cYou have not yet resisted unto the shedding of blood. Remember God disciplines those whom He loves and spanks every son in whom He delights.\u201d [Paraphrase] [Laughter] You get a <em>frowning<\/em> delight\/a delighting <em>frown<\/em>. There\u2019s the discipline of God toward our righteousness: \u201cAll discipline feels uncomfortable for the moment and bears the peaceful fruit of righteousness,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr it might be that we have sinned. Believers sin; how does God look at a believer\u2019s sin?\u2014two ways: covered by the blood of Jesus and displeasing. A lot of people choose\/they say, \u201cIf I\u2019m justified by faith, if I\u2019m totally accepted, if all my sins are forgiven, if He\u2019s 100 percent for me, how could there ever be a frown?\u201d The answer is: \u201cBecause He\u2019s displeased with how out of step you are with that kind of reality.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn order to deal with God\u2019s discipline and frowns, people have to have a rock-solid understanding of justification by faith\u2014that in the moment that I am genuinely united to Jesus by faith, all my sins are forgiven\u2014past, present, future. I am His child; I am adopted <em>forever<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cThere is no condemnation for those who\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026no condemnation for those who are <em>in<\/em> Christ Jesus,\u201d <em>forever<\/em>\u2014those whom He justified, He glorified\u2014no dropouts. That kind of confidence is like the rock that you\u2019re standing on. Then, you spend the rest of your life seeking to bring your life into <em>conformity<\/em> of that reality so that real sins get killed\/put to death what is evil in you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you stumble into sin\u2014your Father, who is 100 percent for you, <em>frowns<\/em>\u2014you should feel that frown with <em>dismay<\/em> and <em>sadness<\/em>: \u201cI don\u2019t want my Father to <em>frown<\/em> at me!\u201d Thus, it brings you to repentance: \u201cIf you confess your sins, He is faithful and just to forgive your sins and cleanse you from all unrighteousness.\u201d You realize, \u201cYes, it was a frown; but behind it was a Father who <em>never<\/em> felt contempt for me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was dealing with a person, the other day, who has a hard time feeling the affections of their heavenly Father. I said, \u201cYes, there can be frowns. Yes, there can be displeasure\u2014like \u2018Don\u2019t grieve the Holy Spirit\u2026\u2019 \u2014right? The Holy Spirit can be grieved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if that person had a father, who had no capacity to show any affection to them, all they\u2019re able to feel naturally is, \u201cGod\u2019s displeasure is like <em>that<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s like my father\u2014behind <em>that<\/em>, was no smile,\u201d they must be taught to retool their brain, by the Holy Spirit, through the Word of God, that God doesn\u2019t feel contemptuous. A wicked, carnal father, who\u2019s always negative and angry toward his children, communicates contemptuousness: \u201cI feel contempt for you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod <em>never<\/em> feels contempt for His children. He feels displeased, but the displeasure rises out of a fundamental: \u201cYou are Mine forever. I have an eternal happiness for you that cannot be taken away. I\u2019m going to get you in sync with this, if I have to spank you with cancer.\u201d It says in 1 Corinthians 11 that, if some people ate the Lord\u2019s supper illegitimately, and they got sick, and some of them die\u2014then Paul gives the explanation for the death of the saints\u2014\u201c\u2026so that they would not be condemned with the world.\u201d What?!\u2014not many believers have a conception of the sweet favor of God that is so caring of them that He43 would take their life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I think it takes believers to a point of being scared when they don\u2019t see the great <em>love<\/em> of the Father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> If you don\u2019t combine that, there is fear. Dave used to refer to God as a Wac-A-Mole God before he knew Christ, because he was <em>fearful<\/em> of what God would do to him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> That\u2019s the theology I thought I heard as a little boy in church\u2014He\u2019s up there with the mallet\u2014that was my image. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cDo something bad, and God just smacks you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; He\u2019s sort of looking down there: \u201cOh, you\u2019re enjoying life?\u201d\u2014boom! \u201cQuit that,\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t do this.\u201d When I went to the text, and Jesus says, \u201cIf you\u2019ve seen Me, you\u2019ve seen the Father,\u201d you get a sense of the character of God as revealed in Christ. I was like, \u201cThat\u2019s not the God of the Bible\u201d; I had a <em>wrong<\/em> understanding of who God was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> Yes; the solution to the Wac-A-Mole vision of God could be to say: \u201cHe never smacks,\u201d <em>or<\/em> \u201cHe only smacks with deep, lasting, eternal affection for His children,\u201d\u2014 that\u2019s a harder theology to teach than\u2014\u201cHe never smacks.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> The \u201cHe never smacks\u201d is a prosperity gospel that says, \u201cAll the bad things that are happening to me are happening from Satan; all the good things that are happening to me are happening from God,\u201d\u2014you\u2019ve got a dualistic universe\u2014this book is written to say, \u201cThere is no such universe.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that He providentially smacks from time to time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> And His providence is wise, purposeful, good, caring, loving; it\u2019s bringing us to an eternal weight of glory.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> <em>And<\/em> His biggest smack was to His Son\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014His Son; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014He took it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve got a lot more to unpack on this and no time to do it today. Because I would love to open the phone lines and say, \u201cIf God has used John Piper in your life in some way, call and share the story with us.\u201d Then, we could sit here and hear the testimony. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I want to hear what <em>you<\/em> would say, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I could come up with a whole bunch of them. We were sharing about things I\u2019ve heard you say, Dr. Piper. Welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> Thank you; thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We were talking about things I\u2019ve heard you say and things I\u2019ve read. I remember being at the very first <em>Together for the Gospel<\/em> event, where you spoke. Here\u2019s the thing that slayed me at the end; you said, \u201cI\u2019m afraid today there are people who, if you went to them and said, \u2018Would you like to go to heaven, where there\u2019s streets of gold, and you\u2019re reunited with your family, and there\u2019s no more sorrow, and there\u2019s no more night?\u2014but, oh, by the way, Jesus won\u2019t be there\u2019; there are a lot of people who would say, \u201cOkay; that\u2019s okay.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> Yes; they\u2019d, at least, feel it if they wouldn\u2019t have the courage to say it. The point of that was: \u201cOnce you have said that: \u2018The gospel is an <em>event<\/em> in history,\u2019 \u2018The gospel is an <em>achievement<\/em> of atoning for sin,\u2019 and \u2018The gospel is an <em>offer<\/em>; you can have it by faith alone\u2019\u2014and once you have said\u2014\u2018It gets you heaven,\u2019 and \u2018It gets you out of hell,\u2019 and \u2018It gets you a clear conscience,\u2019\u2014are you done sharing the gospel?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve pointed out we\u2019re not done <em>because<\/em>\u2014for carnal, unbelieving, even Satanic reasons\u2014you could lack a clear conscience. You would want out of hell; I mean, what unbeliever does not want to go to hell? But not want to love, and be with, and enjoy Jesus forever\u2014that would be a foreign language to a lot of people\u2014\u201cI would be more happy in the presence of Jesus <em>than\u2026<\/em>\u201d\u2014then fill in the blank\u2014because the blank is supposed to be <em>everything<\/em>. So yes; exactly; the gospel is not finished\/the good news is not finished until Christ Himself, as our Friend and our Treasure, is our satisfaction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Bob, that message marked you, though. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was a paradigm shift in my own life. First, I came under conviction as I heard it; because I thought, \u201cI\u2018ve thought that way.\u201d Then secondly, I thought, \u201cI\u2019ve got to be an ambassador for this truth for others.\u201d I\u2019ve shared a clip from that with people in church and various settings and have repeated that over and over again. Thank you for that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t know we were going to do the John Piper <em>quote<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the tributes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s like sitting here with one of the Beatles; and we\u2019re going to go to a lyric and say, \u201cWhat did you mean by this?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of my favorite\u2014and I don\u2019t know when you said it\/how many years ago\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Don\u2019t ask him!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I won\u2019t ask him. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know a core part of your identity and your teaching is\u2014I think I\u2019ll get this right\u2014\u201cGod is most glorified in me when I am most satisfied in Him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Talk about that; because that struck me, years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> That is the essence\/the foundational statement of what I call \u201cChristian Hedonism: God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.\u201d What it shows is that the two great passions of the universe are not in competition; and they are this: \u201cGod\u2019s passion is to be glorified. We were created by God to glorify God,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIsaiah 43:7: \u201cBring my sons and my daughters from the ends of the earth, everyone who I\u2019ve created for my glory,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s <em>the biggest<\/em>, all-consuming, all-pervasive passion in the universe. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, around these tables and in every one of our listeners, is the passion to be happy. You cannot <em>not<\/em> want to be happy; it\u2019s like hunger in the soul. Nobody wants to be unhappy, whatever they define happiness. They just want to be happy and not hurting. I grew up feeling like God\u2019s desire to be glorified and my desire to be happy were <em>somehow <\/em>at odds. That sentence that you just quoted is the biblical answer to how that\u2019s not true\u2014that the Bible really is good news\u2014that when we are born again, God becomes our treasure and our pleasure. In becoming our supreme treasure and our highest pleasure, He gets glorified. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll we have to do is ask: \u201cHow do you glorify something by calling it \u2018unsavory\u2019?\u2014calling it \u2018unpleasant\u2019?\u2014calling it \u2018unsatisfying\u2019? No; that gets no glory for <em>anything<\/em>. A lot of people try to embrace God\u2014and don\u2019t feel like He\u2019s a pleasure; they don\u2019t feel like He\u2019s a treasure or satisfying\u2014and they don\u2019t, therefore, bring Him the glory that He should have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod gets the <em>most<\/em> glory that He should have from souls that are most satisfied in Him. I get fully satisfied; God gets fully glorified, and that\u2019s the best of all possible worlds. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And you\u2019re happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You have just completed\u2014and we\u2019re going to spend some time this week talking about a book that\u2014it\u2019s not just a book\u2014it\u2019s a tome. This is something you\u2019ve taken <em>years<\/em> to write on the subject of providence. Why this subject for a long-term investment and a book that is hundreds of pages?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> Yes, 700 to be precise. Probably because, over the last 50 years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t52 years since God did a great work in my heart in the fall of \u201968 and subsequent years\u2014the power of God, the authority of God, the bigness of God, the freedom of God, the purposes of God, the overarching glory and beauty of God with His all-controlling sovereignty at the center, revolutionized my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to be a God-besotted\/God-entranced person. I don\u2019t think\u2014and I want you to be that, Ann, Dave, Bob\u2014I want you all to <em>be<\/em> that. I want <em>thousands<\/em> of other people to be God-entranced and \u2013saturated\/besotted with God so that, everywhere they look, they see God. Everything they deal with is dealt with in the light of God. There isn\u2019t any other doctrine that brings you to that point better than the providence of God; there isn\u2019t any.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe providence of God\u2014implying His control, supervision, guidance, authority over all things, from the dropping of a bird out of a tree\u2014that\u2019s what Jesus said [paraphrase]\u2014\u201cNot a bird\u201d\u2014not a bird in unseen forests of Brazil\u2014\u201cdrops out of a tree without your Father\u2019s design and presence and purpose.\u201d When you think about: \u201cWhoa; that was <em>His<\/em> way of talking about molecules, atoms, sub-atomic particles. He wasn\u2019t going to drop that on people\u2014they didn\u2019t know what they [those words] were talking about\u2014but they knew birds\/billions of birds, all over the world, dropping out of trees when their time is up. And God is ruling that? If He\u2019s ruling that, and the hairs of my head are all numbered, the implications of that are absolutely staggering.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s both getting a God-entranced vision of life and then <em>all<\/em> the implications, which I\u2019m sure we\u2019ll talk about over these days, of that kind of God being my God, ruling my life, overseeing my happiness and sorrow\u2014it\u2019s just all transforming. It had been at the root of my life. I said, \u201cNow, here I am. If I wait much longer, I\u2019m going to be in the grave; I won\u2019t get this done.\u201d I turned 72 and said, \u201cIt\u2019s got to be done now or never, so I\u2019ve got to put it all together.\u201d It feels like a book, to me, which is the gathering together of pretty much all I\u2019ve ever <em>thought<\/em> into one place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Is there a difference between providence and sovereignty?\u2014are they subsets?\u2014how do they work together?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> In my vocabulary, there\u2019s a difference. I think, in most thoughtful Bible readers, there\u2019s a difference. The difference is this: sovereignty signifies God\u2019s power and authority to do whatever He wills. Providence says, \u201cYes,\u201d\u2014and adds\u2014\u201cHe does it purposefully, wisely, as a good and caring, providing\/providing providence God.\u201d I define providence as <em>purposeful<\/em> sovereignty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> At the same time, the average listener will go, \u201cWell, then, do I have <em>any<\/em> free will? Is <em>everything<\/em> controlled?\u201d How do you answer that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> I begin by looking at the person and saying, \u201cYou\u2019re going to have to define what you mean by free will before I can answer,\u201d which really stumps most people; because they haven\u2019t thought about it. They\u2019ll say something like, \u201cWell, you know, I choose. I choose. I really choose, and my choosing counts.\u201d So free will understood is just: \u201cI choose, and I\u2019m responsible.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would say, \u201cAbsolutely that exists, and God\u2019s providence does not contradict it.\u201d God doesn\u2019t cause you to act in a way that is coercive\/that is contrary to your will and hold you accountable\u2014what you did with your arm twisted behind your back: \u201cI don\u2019t want to do this! I don\u2019t want to do this!\u201d and God is making you do this, and He holds you accountable for it\u2014it just doesn\u2019t work that way. God\u2019s <em>way<\/em> of governing the will includes you\u2019re doing the act; and yet, He\u2019s governing the doing of the act. In there is a mystery\u2014that all the way back to the beginning of the first sin, I don\u2019t have a final answer for\u2014so that exists. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>But<\/em> it\u2019s really important to give this <em>second<\/em> definition, because lots of people think this exists when it doesn\u2019t; namely, philosophers, or people who disagree with my theology with a lot of understanding, would say, \u201cHuman beings have the power of ultimate self-determination.\u201d Here\u2019s what I mean. You come to the point of your conversion; say you\u2019ve been convicted\u2014and you\u2019re going for days, weeks, months\u2014whatever it is. You get to a crisis point\u2014on this side is unbelief; on that side of the moment is belief\u2014at that very moment, do you have the power of ultimate self-determination?\u2014you do <em>not<\/em>; God does. God is the only One, who at that <em>decisive<\/em> act, calls the shots. That divides theology; that divides people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would say, and this book is devoted to showing it\u2019s all over the Bible, that at that moment, God is the only One with such free will\/such free will. That is ultimate self-determination. Human beings <em>never<\/em> have ultimate self-determination. If that\u2019s what somebody means by free will, we don\u2019t have it. If somebody means, by the former: \u201cMy choices are real; I\u2019m really accountable\u201d; therefore, I do have it; and it doesn\u2019t contradict providence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You wrote a book years ago\u2014a series of books\/spiritual biographies\u2014the <em>Swans Are Not Silent<\/em> series, which I have benefitted from. One of the series was on the subject of providence. I remember reading about William Cowper, who wrote the hymn <em>God Works in Mysterious Ways<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> [Correction] <em>God Moves in a Mysterious Way<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And in that hymn there is this line about the \u201cfrowning providence of God,\u201d and \u201cBehind His frowning providence, He hides a smile.\u201d The whole idea that God might have this frowning providence seems to be <em>contrary<\/em> to how we\u2019re supposed to understand the goodness of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> Let\u2019s linger there for a minutes then. The frowning face of God, which exists towards <em>believers<\/em>, can be owing to His Fatherly discipline. Hebrews 12: \u201cYou have not yet resisted unto the shedding of blood. Remember God disciplines those whom He loves and spanks every son in whom He delights.\u201d [Paraphrase] [Laughter] You get a <em>frowning<\/em> delight\/a delighting <em>frown<\/em>. There\u2019s the discipline of God toward our righteousness: \u201cAll discipline feels uncomfortable for the moment and bears the peaceful fruit of righteousness,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr it might be that we have sinned. Believers sin; how does God look at a believer\u2019s sin?\u2014two ways: covered by the blood of Jesus and displeasing. A lot of people choose\/they say, \u201cIf I\u2019m justified by faith, if I\u2019m totally accepted, if all my sins are forgiven, if He\u2019s 100 percent for me, how could there ever be a frown?\u201d The answer is: \u201cBecause He\u2019s displeased with how out of step you are with that kind of reality.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn order to deal with God\u2019s discipline and frowns, people have to have a rock-solid understanding of justification by faith\u2014that in the moment that I am genuinely united to Jesus by faith, all my sins are forgiven\u2014past, present, future. I am His child; I am adopted <em>forever<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cThere is no condemnation for those who\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026no condemnation for those who are <em>in<\/em> Christ Jesus,\u201d <em>forever<\/em>\u2014those whom He justified, He glorified\u2014no dropouts. That kind of confidence is like the rock that you\u2019re standing on. Then, you spend the rest of your life seeking to bring your life into <em>conformity<\/em> of that reality so that real sins get killed\/put to death what is evil in you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you stumble into sin\u2014your Father, who is 100 percent for you, <em>frowns<\/em>\u2014you should feel that frown with <em>dismay<\/em> and <em>sadness<\/em>: \u201cI don\u2019t want my Father to <em>frown<\/em> at me!\u201d Thus, it brings you to repentance: \u201cIf you confess your sins, He is faithful and just to forgive your sins and cleanse you from all unrighteousness.\u201d You realize, \u201cYes, it was a frown; but behind it was a Father who <em>never<\/em> felt contempt for me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was dealing with a person, the other day, who has a hard time feeling the affections of their heavenly Father. I said, \u201cYes, there can be frowns. Yes, there can be displeasure\u2014like \u2018Don\u2019t grieve the Holy Spirit\u2026\u2019 \u2014right? The Holy Spirit can be grieved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if that person had a father, who had no capacity to show any affection to them, all they\u2019re able to feel naturally is, \u201cGod\u2019s displeasure is like <em>that<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s like my father\u2014behind <em>that<\/em>, was no smile,\u201d they must be taught to retool their brain, by the Holy Spirit, through the Word of God, that God doesn\u2019t feel contemptuous. A wicked, carnal father, who\u2019s always negative and angry toward his children, communicates contemptuousness: \u201cI feel contempt for you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod <em>never<\/em> feels contempt for His children. He feels displeased, but the displeasure rises out of a fundamental: \u201cYou are Mine forever. I have an eternal happiness for you that cannot be taken away. I\u2019m going to get you in sync with this, if I have to spank you with cancer.\u201d It says in 1 Corinthians 11 that, if some people ate the Lord\u2019s supper illegitimately, and they got sick, and some of them die\u2014then Paul gives the explanation for the death of the saints\u2014\u201c\u2026so that they would not be condemned with the world.\u201d What?!\u2014not many believers have a conception of the sweet favor of God that is so caring of them that He43 would take their life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I think it takes believers to a point of being scared when they don\u2019t see the great <em>love<\/em> of the Father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> If you don\u2019t combine that, there is fear. Dave used to refer to God as a Wac-A-Mole God before he knew Christ, because he was <em>fearful<\/em> of what God would do to him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> That\u2019s the theology I thought I heard as a little boy in church\u2014He\u2019s up there with the mallet\u2014that was my image. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cDo something bad, and God just smacks you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; He\u2019s sort of looking down there: \u201cOh, you\u2019re enjoying life?\u201d\u2014boom! \u201cQuit that,\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t do this.\u201d When I went to the text, and Jesus says, \u201cIf you\u2019ve seen Me, you\u2019ve seen the Father,\u201d you get a sense of the character of God as revealed in Christ. I was like, \u201cThat\u2019s not the God of the Bible\u201d; I had a <em>wrong<\/em> understanding of who God was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> Yes; the solution to the Wac-A-Mole vision of God could be to say: \u201cHe never smacks,\u201d <em>or<\/em> \u201cHe only smacks with deep, lasting, eternal affection for His children,\u201d\u2014 that\u2019s a harder theology to teach than\u2014\u201cHe never smacks.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> The \u201cHe never smacks\u201d is a prosperity gospel that says, \u201cAll the bad things that are happening to me are happening from Satan; all the good things that are happening to me are happening from God,\u201d\u2014you\u2019ve got a dualistic universe\u2014this book is written to say, \u201cThere is no such universe.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that He providentially smacks from time to time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Piper:<\/strong> And His providence is wise, purposeful, good, caring, loving; it\u2019s bringing us to an eternal weight of glory.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> <em>And<\/em> His biggest smack was to His Son\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014His Son; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014He took it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve got a lot more to unpack on this and no time to do it today. We\u2019ll pick this up tomorrow.
