Welcome to 2021!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Here we are!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> This is going to be a <em>good<\/em> year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s going to be a <em>good<\/em> year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Please put 2020 <em>behind<\/em> us. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve had people\u2014who have been regularly coming up to me\/coming up to you guys and saying\u2014\u201cSo the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014are we doing those again?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> The answer is \u201cYes!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cWe are!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The answer is: \u201cDoes anybody really know what <em>anybody<\/em> is doing this year?\u201d [Laughter] But yes, we have plans this spring for about a dozen <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> getaways. They\u2019re going to be in cities across the country in socially-distanced settings in ballrooms, which means that you\u2019ll be in a ballroom that can hold 1,000 people, and there may be a couple hundred of you in the ballroom\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014which, also, means that these dozen events are probably going to sell out\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014quickly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, like right away. If this is something that you go, \u201cThis is a priority for us in the spring of 2021.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Don\u2019t wait until tonight or tomorrow; do it right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I would say, too, we\u2019ve been locked down; and I think some of us are <em>itching<\/em> to get out. Our marriages <em>need<\/em> this help. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, you\u2019ve shared with us before\u2014part of your story from before you were married\u2014three weeks before you were married, you wound up at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; two weeks to the day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is something that somebody, was discipling you, had said, \u201cYou should do this\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes, I was a senior in college; Ann was a freshman\u2014I\u2019m not recommending, by the way, that seniors marry freshmen\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but that\u2019s where we were. I was involved in Cru<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> ministry on our campus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> We both were. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Athletes in Action: she at Kentucky; me at the illustrious Harvard of the Midwest, Ball State University. [Laughter] We didn\u2019t even know what we were going to; they just said, \u201cIf you\u2019re going to get married, you <em>have<\/em> to go to the <em>Weekend to Remember.<\/em>\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014which was great advice!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I remember them saying, \u201cThey teach God\u2019s game plan for marriage.\u201d We had no idea! We\u2019re like, \u201cWhat is it?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; if someone would have asked us, \u201cHey, why do you think God created marriage?\u201d we would\u2019ve looked at each other, dumbfounded, and thought, \u201cUhhhh, to make us <em>happy<\/em>?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We had no idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cSo we can have legitimate sex?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Exactly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think a lot of us have this shallow, superficial understanding of marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou get in the car; you drive to Chicago?\u2014for the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Boy, you know a lot about us, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> He\u2019s heard it all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ve <em>heard<\/em> the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It\u2019s 41 years ago. We didn\u2019t even stay in a hotel; we stayed at my sister\u2019s house. She even looked at us, like, \u201cWhat are you guys doing up here? You\u2019re going to a pre-married thing?\u201d It\u2019s like, \u201cNo; there\u2019s married couples there.\u201d There were 1,000 people in that ballroom; it was a big one. Probably 30, 40, 50 of us were engaged or pre-married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> But here\u2019s what we thought, Bob: \u201cWe don\u2019t really <em>need<\/em> this. This is nice to hear, but we\u2019re going to be <em>amazing<\/em>. We\u2019re going to have a <em>great<\/em> marriage!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; we thought, \u201cWe love each other; we love Jesus; we\u2019re going into ministry. Marriage, really\u2014for <em>us<\/em>?\u2014won\u2019t be very hard.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I think part of that was <em>because<\/em> of the way we started dating and the way we <em>met<\/em>. We thought, \u201cThis will be a supernatural marriage, and no one else will have as good of a marriage as we will.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When Mary Ann and I got engaged, I think we had the thought that, \u201cWe are two people, who love Jesus; therefore, the marriage is going to work. Marriage is hard for people who don\u2019t love Jesus; marriage is easy for people who do love Jesus.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, it takes about five minutes of marriage before you go, \u201cOkay; that wasn\u2019t <em>exactly<\/em> right.\u201d Yet, we do have that kind of naivet\u00e9; and then we get the wake-up call: \u201cOh, this is harder than we realized.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We <em>never<\/em> saw\/I never saw a single blemish in the <em>long<\/em> dating relationship we had\u2014six months\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>\u2014I mean, nine months total.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> We had never spent more than five days together, total.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in the same town.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; because we were in different colleges. We started dating in the summer. Dave went off to college, pretty early, because of football; so we didn\u2019t know each other very well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe both were coming from this point of being fairly new in our walks with God. I can remember, when I first saw Dave, and someone told me he became a Christian. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; there were these flowing locks of hair, slow motion, music. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I was walking through our high school gym at Christmas, getting ready to have Christmas break. I was going to my car, and all the girls were fluttering about. They said, \u201cDave Wilson\u2019s in the gym, playing basketball.\u201d Everybody knew Dave Wilson; he was a junior in college. They were all scattered, and not knowing what to do, because they were so excited to see Dave Wilson.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019ve never heard this part before! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t tell you this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014because it would make your head big. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Whatever. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I walked through the gym. Someone came up to me; and they said, \u201cDid you hear that he became a Christian?\u201d I was very new in my faith, but I was really excited about my faith. I walked <em>straight<\/em> over to Dave. I went up to him and said, \u201cYou\/so you became a Christian and gave your life to <em>Jesus<\/em>?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> She\u2019s being nice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you remember this conversation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> She didn\u2019t say \u201cyou.\u201d She goes, \u201cYes; like <em>you\u2019re<\/em> a Christian.\u201d [Laughter] That\u2019s what she said. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t that bad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> She just looked right\u2014she doesn\u2019t say, \u201cHi,\u201d or anything\u2014she\u2019s just like, \u201cYou\u2019re a Christian? Yeah; right.\u201d That\u2019s what she said! [Laughter] I go, \u201cYeah; I actually just became a Christian.\u201d \u201cThat <em>can\u2019t<\/em> be true!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Now, you\u2019re exaggerating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, it is\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t that bad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014maybe I\u2019m exaggerating a little.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> He had a really bad reputation with alcohol\/with girls, so I had a hard time believing that. But that night, I was sitting in our high school gym, watching a basketball game.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Her boyfriend was playing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I happened to be sitting beside a guy, who Dave knew, who was [my] classmate. I was sharing the gospel\u2014like, \u201cOh, I <em>thought<\/em> I was a Christian; but I\u2019d never given my life to Jesus. This is how He\u2019s changed my life.\u201d Dave was sitting right in front of me. I patted him on the shoulder; and I said, \u201cDave, tell him what\u2019s happened to you!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> All night, during this ball game, she was sharing the gospel right behind me, and inviting me into this conversation. This was one of my best friends\u2019 younger brother; she was sharing with Scott. I would turn around and, basically, share my testimony and add some things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll I know is\u2014I remember getting in the car that night, driving home, and thinking, \u201cI\u2019ve never met a young woman on fire for Jesus like that.\u201d I was like, \u201cWow.\u201d And I was in a long-term relationship with a girl that I figured, in about a year\/year-and-a-half, we would get married. It struck me that night: \u201cWow; Ann Baron\u2014she\u2019s going for it\u2014she\u2019s on fire.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And I thought the same thing about Dave. I thought, \u201cOh, this is for <em>real<\/em>; this guy is <em>serious<\/em> about his faith.\u201d I <em>also<\/em> thought, \u201cI wish my boyfriend was like that.\u201d Then I thought, \u201cWhat would it be like to be married to or date someone, who was really passionate about their walk with God?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That was what was attractive about him to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And that was beginning to be attractive for you about Ann\u2014or someone like Ann\u2014you just were attracted to someone who had that kind of passion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; I mean: \u201cThat woman, on fire; I don\u2019t think I\u2019d ever seen <em>like<\/em> that.\u201d Because of that\u2014it was Christmas break for me [when I saw Ann]\u2014I go back to college, and my girlfriend was at a different university. The next weekend, I\u2019m driving to go see her, which I did almost every weekend; it hit me, when we\u2019re together, \u201cJesus is not even in the equation.\u201d I\u2019m trying to walk with God at my campus\u2014when I get with her, I go right back into where I know Jesus doesn\u2019t want me to live\u2014I spend the night at her place; we\u2019re sexually active. I\u2019m trying to grow in my walk and not living\u2014and she\u2019s\/I\u2019m not blaming her\u2014but she\u2019s pulling me a different way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d seen what it could be like\u2014again, just one evening, watching Ann share Christ\u2014that marked me. I remember\/I\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> forgotten that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Me, too; because I realized, when I was with this boyfriend, I thought, \u201cI\u2019m <em>always<\/em> pushing him,\u201d\u2014I\u2019m like, \u201cOh, you should read this,\u201d\u00a0 or \u201cWe should pray about this.\u201d I always felt like I\u2019m <em>pulling<\/em> him along. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe, over the years, have seen <em>so many<\/em> couples do that\/so many dating couples: \u201cWell, I think\/I think he\u2019ll start growing,\u201d or \u201cI think he\u2019ll become this guy\u201d; instead of already getting somebody that is <em>on fire<\/em> for Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I had even\/I, actually, started that in my mind\u2014after seeing Ann, knowing I\u2019m never going to date her\u2014thinking, \u201cWell, after I get married, I\u2019ll get my girlfriend where I am spiritually.\u201d Now, after 40 years of marriage, how many times have we heard married couples say, \u201cThat\u2019s what I thought too\u201d?\u2014and it doesn\u2019t always go that way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ve quoted this for years\u2014I heard Tommy Nelson on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014pastor from Denton, Texas\u2014he said, \u201cI always say to single people, \u2018If you are single, your job is to run as hard and as fast toward Jesus as you can. If while you\u2019re running, in the corner of your eye, you see somebody running in the same direction at the same speed, take a second look\u2014that\u2019s your dating philosophy\u2014that\u2019s how you do this.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat struck me; because a lot of people will say, \u201cLook for another Christian.\u201d There\u2019s a difference between looking for a Christian and somebody, who\u2019s running at <em>your<\/em> speed in your direction. If you\u2019re on fire for Jesus, and somebody else is lukewarm for Jesus, now, we have\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> You mean the guy laying on the track? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014sitting on the bench?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, we\u2019ve got the unequally-yoked situation, where you\u2019re pulling hard; and they\u2019re just dragging their heels; and you\u2019re spinning in circles.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014and they\u2019re saying, \u201cWhy are you running <em>so fast<\/em>?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That relationship is going to be frustrating and draining. You can\u2019t think, \u201cOkay; we\u2019ll try this, and it will get better.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Here\u2019s the other thing that I realized\u2014and I\u2019ve now spoken and tried to encourage singles to listen to this is\u2014usually, the lukewarm believer or the non-believer pulls the believer back where they are rather than the other way. I remember hearing Chuck Swindoll, decades ago, talk about a white glove and mud. He says, \u201cMud gets on the glove, but the glove doesn\u2019t get on the mud. [Laughter] It isn\u2019t a glove-y mud; it\u2019s a muddy glove.\u201d [Laughter] It\u2019s like, \u201cWow! That\u2019s what I was trying to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAfter that Christmas break, I remember trying to pull my girlfriend where I was; and she kept pulling me back. Again, I\u2019m not blaming her; I <em>chose<\/em> to go lukewarm. I\u2019ll never forget, going to see her three or four months later, sort of surprising her at her university. She knew I was coming, but I was supposed to come a couple hours later. I had her key to her room\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m here!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014I peek in, and she\u2019s with another guy; it broke <em>my heart<\/em>. I remember looking at her\u2014\u201cI\u2019m going to marry this girl!\u201d\u2014even though, now, I\u2019m thinking\u2014\u201cI should have never been thinking I was going to marry her.\u201d When I saw that, it was like all those things I thought I might have been seeing\u2014there it is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It was evidence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cThat\u2019s who she is.\u201d People had even told me, \u201cYou don\u2019t really know who she is.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s who she is.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember sort of yelling at her; they looked at me, and I slammed the door. I <em>ran<\/em> to my car; I started driving 30 miles from her university to my hometown, and cried the whole way. I was <em>devastated<\/em>\u2014it was like: \u201cWhat did I just see? What is my life? What is happening?\u201d<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember I got to the back door of our house, walked in. I have the <em>greatest<\/em> single mom\u2014she loved me to death; she\u2019s a sweetheart\u2014she\u2019s with the Lord now\u2014but I remember she looked at me, and I\u2019m sobbing\u2014she\u2019s like, \u201cAre you okay?\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cI can\u2019t talk to you right now; I need to go to my room.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember I went straight to the back room, shut the door\u2014this is my childhood bedroom\u2014got right on my knees. Bob, I\u2019m telling you\u2014right there and then\u2014I said, \u201cJesus, I\u2019m all in; I\u2019ve been trying to control my life.\u201d I was sort of holding onto football; and I\u2019d just blown out my knee, and I didn\u2019t know if I\u2019d play again\u2014well, that went real well for me. And I\u2019d held onto this relationship with a girl; I wasn\u2019t willing to turn it over and do it God\u2019s way. Right then and there, I got on my knees and said, \u201cOkay, God; obviously, <em>my<\/em> plan is not a great one. Yours is better; I choose You. I put You on the throne of my life. I\u2019m going to do and go and be anything you want me to be. I don\u2019t know what that is, but I\u2019m completely all in.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the crazy thing\u2014I get done with that prayer\u2014and I know, at this moment, I have to grow spiritually. I\u2019ve been living in this town; I don\u2019t even have a church! All I know is that there\u2019s a woman, named Ann Baron, who\u2019s on fire. I say, \u201cGod, bump me into her because\u201d\u2014I don\u2019t want to date her\u2014\u201cshe\u2019s got a church, and she\u2019s got a fire. That\u2019s the kind of fire I want; I think she can help me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You had never, in the back of your mind, thought, \u201cShe\u2019s kind of cute.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I mean, I thought she was <em>extremely<\/em> cute; I was <em>not<\/em> attracted to date her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me ask you [Ann]\u2014from that bleacher conversation\u2014this is Dave Wilson, who had been the star of the football team at the high school. He\u2019s back, and he\u2019s two years older. All the girls are like, \u201cDave Wilson\u2019s in the gym.\u201d Were you looking at him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; I thought, \u201cHe may be super arrogant, but he is <em>so hot<\/em>. [Laughter] This guy is cute!\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut here\u2019s the thing, Bob\u2014the same night that Dave is on his knees, praying, I\u2019m working a night shift at Whirlpool\/the factory, shooting screws into dishwasher doors on an assembly line. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Her dad was a Whirlpool employee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; it was a great job for the summer, making lots of money. But it\u2019s this monotonous job, where you\u2019re shooting these screws in. I remember praying this whole time, like: \u201cGod, what am I doing? I\u2019m going to be in college next year. I feel like I\u2019m dating this guy, and it\u2019s going nowhere. I shouldn\u2019t be doing things I\u2019m doing with him. I feel like that\u2019s pulling me back; I want to grow!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said this prayer, like, \u201cGod, Jesus, I\u2019m done playing this game. I\u2019m going to be all in with you. I give you my life\/everything\u2014my future\/my boyfriend\u2014I will go anywhere You call me. I will do anything You want me to do. I will say anything You want me to say, God, because I am all Yours. I am all Yours from this day forward.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I was done praying that; and at the end of my prayer\u2014because I was new in my faith\u2014my sister led me to Jesus; I didn\u2019t really have anyone discipling me\u2014I was growing on my own, going to a church. At the end of the prayer, I thought, \u201cI wonder if Dave Wilson\u2019s home this summer?\u201d At the end of my prayer, I\u2019m like, \u201cLord, I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on with Dave Wilson,\u201d\u2014maybe, he\u2019s married at this point\u2014\u201cbut if you want me to bump into him, and he could help me grow, help me to just somehow bump into him. Amen!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> This sounds like a dating prayer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Sounds like a Hallmark<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It <em>is<\/em> a Hallmark movie! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> When I hear her saying this, it sounds like neither one of us had the right motivation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I wanted to grow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019m telling you\u2014my motivation was pure. The next morning, I get up; of course, I don\u2019t know she prayed that across the other side of town. I pick up my buddy, Greg, who was my high school kicker. We have a painting business, so we\u2019re going to paint my grandma\u2019s house; and you\u2019re not late to your grandma\u2019s house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>We\u2019re driving over there; and I tell Greg, \u201cDude, I surrendered my life to Jesus yesterday.\u201d He goes, \u201cWhat?!\u201d I told him this, and I told him my prayer. I literally walked through the whole thing. I said, at the end, \u201cI even prayed to bump into Ann Baron.\u201d He says, \u201cYou\u2019re not supposed to pray for yourself.\u201d I go, \u201cI don\u2019t know what you\u2019re supposed to pray, Greg; but that\u2019s what I prayed.\u201d He goes, \u201cThat\u2019s weird.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re driving to my grandma\u2019s, and we\u2019re going by the high school; it\u2019s just on the way. He goes, \u201cHey, let\u2019s stop in real quick and see Coach Jones,\u201d our high school football coach. I go, \u201cNo, dude; we\u2019ve got to get to my grandma\u2019s. We can\u2019t be late.\u201d \u201cNo; come on, man. Let\u2019s go.\u201d \u201cNo; we can\u2019t\u201d; I just say, \u201cNo; we\u2019re not.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe <em>reaches<\/em> over and flips the steering wheel, as I\u2019m driving; he just pushes it. I said, \u201cDude! Okay; we\u2019ll run in there for five minutes.\u201d We run in and say, \u201cHi,\u201d to Coach Jones. We\u2019re walking out; I\u2019m talking to Coach Jones. Greg\u2019s walking out in front of me, past the tennis courts. Greg\u2014\u201cMr. You\u2019re-not-supposed-to-pray-for-yourself\u201d goes\u2014\u201cOh, my gosh! God just answered your prayer, Dude!\u201d I go, \u201cWhat?\u201d He goes, \u201cLook!\u201d I turned; and there\u2019s Ann, playing tennis with her mom on this tennis court, as we\u2019re walking out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014which, I was in a tennis tournament that morning, and I had played <em>horribly<\/em>. We were driving home; and I said, \u201cOh, Mom. I need to get my stroke back. Let\u2019s stop at the high school court, and I can get my confidence back.\u201d We\u2019re hitting; and all of a sudden, Dave Wilson comes up to the fence; and he says [sounding like Dave], \u201cHey; when are <em>we<\/em> going to play?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> The truth is\u2014I stood there; she was with her back to me\u2014I was so afraid to say anything. Greg <em>hits<\/em> me and goes, \u201cDude! God answered your prayer!\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cHey, when are we going to play tennis?\u201d Long story short\u2014next morning, we played tennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> We <em>never<\/em> played tennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We never did; we sat and talked about Jesus. I remember asking her, \u201cWhat do you want to do with your life?\u201d She said, \u201cI\u2019m going to follow Jesus; I\u2019m going to serve Jesus. I believe He\u2019s got a call on my life.\u201d I remember getting in the car, and going, \u201cI\u2019ve never talked to an 18-year-old girl, who knew what she wanted to do with her life.\u201d It didn\u2019t matter whether I was a part of it or not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe started on a dating relationship, unlike any dating relationship either one of us had ever been a part of, because Christ was never the center. It was the first time\u2014as you said, Bob, earlier\u2014she\u2019s sprinting on the track; I\u2019m sprinting on the track; and Jesus was the center. I\u2019m not saying it was this perfect dating relationship, but it was the way God has designed dating and engagement to be\u2014it\u2019s like He\u2019s the beginning\u2014we prayed at the beginning; we prayed at the end. We kept ourself sexually pure. It was just a <em>totally<\/em> different perspective. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen when we went to the FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, we heard\u2014of all the things we heard\u2014\u201cHere\u2019s God\u2019s plan for your marriage; it\u2019s bigger than you. He wants to reveal to the world Who He is through marriage.\u201d We knew we were entering a partnership.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When your dad\u2014who knew Dave Wilson, because he\u2019d coached him as a baseball player\u2014knew his reputation, knew his past\u2014when he heard you\u2019re spending time with Dave Wilson, what did he say to <em>you<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> He said, \u201cYou are no longer going to see Dave Wilson; I <em>forbid<\/em> you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I was not allowed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I said, \u201cNo, Dad; Dave\u2019s different now.\u201d He goes, \u201cOh, yeah? I don\u2019t really care if you think he\u2019s different. I know his reputation, and you are <em>not<\/em> going to date him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What did you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> We were praying about it\u2014really praying\u2014like, \u201cLord, I pray that You\u2019d show my dad.\u201d The high school football coach happened to be with my dad. The high school football coach said, \u201cHey, I hear that Ann and Dave are hanging out.\u201d My dad said, \u201cYes; I\u2019m not going to let that happen.\u201d The coach said, \u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t you? He\u2019s one of the <em>nicest<\/em> guys I know\u201d; so my dad said, Okay\u201d!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He softened up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; I feel like that was God. By that point, he really saw something different in us; and he really trusted Dave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It really was\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014miraculous. Bob, do you see why we thought we wouldn\u2019t struggle?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Sure; it\u2019s this amazing story, and God\u2019s hand is all over it; \u201cTherefore, we won\u2019t have challenges in marriage.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And how long did it take before\u2014do you remember the first time you thought, \u201cI wonder if I made a mistake\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; six months\/six months, I yelled at Dave, \u201cMarrying you was the biggest mistake of my life\u201d; [thinking] \u201cHe\u2019s the wrong person; the right person is out there, and I should go find him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You shared that story in <em>Vertical Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, both the video series and the book. That was the beginning of what I would call the second chapter of your journey, because God took you through a refining process to get you ready for where He has you today\u2014speaking to hundreds of thousands of people, every day on radio\/on this podcast, as you speak at events. God had to take you through the purifying chapters. Those were not easy years, but it was part of His work to prepare you for how He wants to use you; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I think back\u2014we <em>started<\/em> dating with the right perspective\u2014that Jesus is the answer; Jesus is our source of life\u2014<em>not<\/em> the person I\u2019m dating. Then, you forget. We started our marriage; within months, we\u2019re like, \u201cYou need to do this, and you need to be this, so that I can be happy.\u201d Where are our eyes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014on the other person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Our eyes are on our spouse rather than, \u201cNo, no, no; it\u2019s back to: \u2018Jesus is the source.\u2019\u201d In the Book of Revelation, He speaks a revelation to John; and He says, \u201cYou\u2019ve lost your first love,\u201d to a church. It\u2019s interesting what He says to do: \u201cRepent and do the things you did at first.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you think about that in our marriage, or in anyone\u2019s marriage, it\u2019s like \u201crepent\u201d means go back and put Him back on the throne\u2014or \u201cvertical\u201d is what we call it\u2014\u201cRemember what you were doing when you were dating?\u2014when you really were passionate in love and you pursued with a reckless abandon?\u2014do that again.\u201d Again, I\u2019m not going to say we did it perfectly; but there is a way that He says to do in His Word, and it\u2019s the right way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And if you need a refresher, and you can get to one of the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> getaways this spring, do that. Welcome to 2021!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Here we are!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> This is going to be a <em>good<\/em> year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s going to be a <em>good<\/em> year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Please put 2020 <em>behind<\/em> us. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve had people\u2014who have been regularly coming up to me\/coming up to you guys and saying\u2014\u201cSo the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014are we doing those again?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> The answer is \u201cYes!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cWe are!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The answer is: \u201cDoes anybody really know what <em>anybody<\/em> is doing this year?\u201d [Laughter] But yes, we have plans this spring for about a dozen <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> getaways. They\u2019re going to be in cities across the country in socially-distanced settings in ballrooms, which means that you\u2019ll be in a ballroom that can hold 1,000 people, and there may be a couple hundred of you in the ballroom\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014which, also, means that these dozen events are probably going to sell out\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014quickly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, like right away. If this is something that you go, \u201cThis is a priority for us in the spring of 2021.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Don\u2019t wait until tonight or tomorrow; do it right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I would say, too, we\u2019ve been locked down; and I think some of us are <em>itching<\/em> to get out. Our marriages <em>need<\/em> this help. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, you\u2019ve shared with us before\u2014part of your story from before you were married\u2014three weeks before you were married, you wound up at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; two weeks to the day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is something that somebody, was discipling you, had said, \u201cYou should do this\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes, I was a senior in college; Ann was a freshman\u2014I\u2019m not recommending, by the way, that seniors marry freshmen\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but that\u2019s where we were. I was involved in Cru<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> ministry on our campus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> We both were. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Athletes in Action: she at Kentucky; me at the illustrious Harvard of the Midwest, Ball State University. [Laughter] We didn\u2019t even know what we were going to; they just said, \u201cIf you\u2019re going to get married, you <em>have<\/em> to go to the <em>Weekend to Remember.<\/em>\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014which was great advice!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I remember them saying, \u201cThey teach God\u2019s game plan for marriage.\u201d We had no idea! We\u2019re like, \u201cWhat is it?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; if someone would have asked us, \u201cHey, why do you think God created marriage?\u201d we would\u2019ve looked at each other, dumbfounded, and thought, \u201cUhhhh, to make us <em>happy<\/em>?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We had no idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cSo we can have legitimate sex?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Exactly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think a lot of us have this shallow, superficial understanding of marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou get in the car; you drive to Chicago?\u2014for the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Boy, you know a lot about us, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> He\u2019s heard it all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ve <em>heard<\/em> the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It\u2019s 41 years ago. We didn\u2019t even stay in a hotel; we stayed at my sister\u2019s house. She even looked at us, like, \u201cWhat are you guys doing up here? You\u2019re going to a pre-married thing?\u201d It\u2019s like, \u201cNo; there\u2019s married couples there.\u201d There were 1,000 people in that ballroom; it was a big one. Probably 30, 40, 50 of us were engaged or pre-married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> But here\u2019s what we thought, Bob: \u201cWe don\u2019t really <em>need<\/em> this. This is nice to hear, but we\u2019re going to be <em>amazing<\/em>. We\u2019re going to have a <em>great<\/em> marriage!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; we thought, \u201cWe love each other; we love Jesus; we\u2019re going into ministry. Marriage, really\u2014for <em>us<\/em>?\u2014won\u2019t be very hard.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I think part of that was <em>because<\/em> of the way we started dating and the way we <em>met<\/em>. We thought, \u201cThis will be a supernatural marriage, and no one else will have as good of a marriage as we will.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When Mary Ann and I got engaged, I think we had the thought that, \u201cWe are two people, who love Jesus; therefore, the marriage is going to work. Marriage is hard for people who don\u2019t love Jesus; marriage is easy for people who do love Jesus.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, it takes about five minutes of marriage before you go, \u201cOkay; that wasn\u2019t <em>exactly<\/em> right.\u201d Yet, we do have that kind of naivet\u00e9; and then we get the wake-up call: \u201cOh, this is harder than we realized.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We <em>never<\/em> saw\/I never saw a single blemish in the <em>long<\/em> dating relationship we had\u2014six months\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>\u2014I mean, nine months total.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> We had never spent more than five days together, total.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in the same town.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; because we were in different colleges. We started dating in the summer. Dave went off to college, pretty early, because of football; so we didn\u2019t know each other very well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe both were coming from this point of being fairly new in our walks with God. I can remember, when I first saw Dave, and someone told me he became a Christian. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; there were these flowing locks of hair, slow motion, music. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I was walking through our high school gym at Christmas, getting ready to have Christmas break. I was going to my car, and all the girls were fluttering about. They said, \u201cDave Wilson\u2019s in the gym, playing basketball.\u201d Everybody knew Dave Wilson; he was a junior in college. They were all scattered, and not knowing what to do, because they were so excited to see Dave Wilson.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019ve never heard this part before! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t tell you this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014because it would make your head big. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Whatever. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I walked through the gym. Someone came up to me; and they said, \u201cDid you hear that he became a Christian?\u201d I was very new in my faith, but I was really excited about my faith. I walked <em>straight<\/em> over to Dave. I went up to him and said, \u201cYou\/so you became a Christian and gave your life to <em>Jesus<\/em>?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> She\u2019s being nice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you remember this conversation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> She didn\u2019t say \u201cyou.\u201d She goes, \u201cYes; like <em>you\u2019re<\/em> a Christian.\u201d [Laughter] That\u2019s what she said. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t that bad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> She just looked right\u2014she doesn\u2019t say, \u201cHi,\u201d or anything\u2014she\u2019s just like, \u201cYou\u2019re a Christian? Yeah; right.\u201d That\u2019s what she said! [Laughter] I go, \u201cYeah; I actually just became a Christian.\u201d \u201cThat <em>can\u2019t<\/em> be true!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Now, you\u2019re exaggerating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, it is\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t that bad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014maybe I\u2019m exaggerating a little.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> He had a really bad reputation with alcohol\/with girls, so I had a hard time believing that. But that night, I was sitting in our high school gym, watching a basketball game.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Her boyfriend was playing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I happened to be sitting beside a guy, who Dave knew, who was [my] classmate. I was sharing the gospel\u2014like, \u201cOh, I <em>thought<\/em> I was a Christian; but I\u2019d never given my life to Jesus. This is how He\u2019s changed my life.\u201d Dave was sitting right in front of me. I patted him on the shoulder; and I said, \u201cDave, tell him what\u2019s happened to you!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> All night, during this ball game, she was sharing the gospel right behind me, and inviting me into this conversation. This was one of my best friends\u2019 younger brother; she was sharing with Scott. I would turn around and, basically, share my testimony and add some things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll I know is\u2014I remember getting in the car that night, driving home, and thinking, \u201cI\u2019ve never met a young woman on fire for Jesus like that.\u201d I was like, \u201cWow.\u201d And I was in a long-term relationship with a girl that I figured, in about a year\/year-and-a-half, we would get married. It struck me that night: \u201cWow; Ann Baron\u2014she\u2019s going for it\u2014she\u2019s on fire.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And I thought the same thing about Dave. I thought, \u201cOh, this is for <em>real<\/em>; this guy is <em>serious<\/em> about his faith.\u201d I <em>also<\/em> thought, \u201cI wish my boyfriend was like that.\u201d Then I thought, \u201cWhat would it be like to be married to or date someone, who was really passionate about their walk with God?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That was what was attractive about him to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And that was beginning to be attractive for you about Ann\u2014or someone like Ann\u2014you just were attracted to someone who had that kind of passion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; I mean: \u201cThat woman, on fire; I don\u2019t think I\u2019d ever seen <em>like<\/em> that.\u201d Because of that\u2014it was Christmas break for me [when I saw Ann]\u2014I go back to college, and my girlfriend was at a different university. The next weekend, I\u2019m driving to go see her, which I did almost every weekend; it hit me, when we\u2019re together, \u201cJesus is not even in the equation.\u201d I\u2019m trying to walk with God at my campus\u2014when I get with her, I go right back into where I know Jesus doesn\u2019t want me to live\u2014I spend the night at her place; we\u2019re sexually active. I\u2019m trying to grow in my walk and not living\u2014and she\u2019s\/I\u2019m not blaming her\u2014but she\u2019s pulling me a different way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d seen what it could be like\u2014again, just one evening, watching Ann share Christ\u2014that marked me. I remember\/I\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> forgotten that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Me, too; because I realized, when I was with this boyfriend, I thought, \u201cI\u2019m <em>always<\/em> pushing him,\u201d\u2014I\u2019m like, \u201cOh, you should read this,\u201d\u00a0 or \u201cWe should pray about this.\u201d I always felt like I\u2019m <em>pulling<\/em> him along. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe, over the years, have seen <em>so many<\/em> couples do that\/so many dating couples: \u201cWell, I think\/I think he\u2019ll start growing,\u201d or \u201cI think he\u2019ll become this guy\u201d; instead of already getting somebody that is <em>on fire<\/em> for Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I had even\/I, actually, started that in my mind\u2014after seeing Ann, knowing I\u2019m never going to date her\u2014thinking, \u201cWell, after I get married, I\u2019ll get my girlfriend where I am spiritually.\u201d Now, after 40 years of marriage, how many times have we heard married couples say, \u201cThat\u2019s what I thought too\u201d?\u2014and it doesn\u2019t always go that way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ve quoted this for years\u2014I heard Tommy Nelson on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014pastor from Denton, Texas\u2014he said, \u201cI always say to single people, \u2018If you are single, your job is to run as hard and as fast toward Jesus as you can. If while you\u2019re running, in the corner of your eye, you see somebody running in the same direction at the same speed, take a second look\u2014that\u2019s your dating philosophy\u2014that\u2019s how you do this.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat struck me; because a lot of people will say, \u201cLook for another Christian.\u201d There\u2019s a difference between looking for a Christian and somebody, who\u2019s running at <em>your<\/em> speed in your direction. If you\u2019re on fire for Jesus, and somebody else is lukewarm for Jesus, now, we have\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> You mean the guy laying on the track? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014sitting on the bench?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, we\u2019ve got the unequally-yoked situation, where you\u2019re pulling hard; and they\u2019re just dragging their heels; and you\u2019re spinning in circles.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014and they\u2019re saying, \u201cWhy are you running <em>so fast<\/em>?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That relationship is going to be frustrating and draining. You can\u2019t think, \u201cOkay; we\u2019ll try this, and it will get better.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Here\u2019s the other thing that I realized\u2014and I\u2019ve now spoken and tried to encourage singles to listen to this is\u2014usually, the lukewarm believer or the non-believer pulls the believer back where they are rather than the other way. I remember hearing Chuck Swindoll, decades ago, talk about a white glove and mud. He says, \u201cMud gets on the glove, but the glove doesn\u2019t get on the mud. [Laughter] It isn\u2019t a glove-y mud; it\u2019s a muddy glove.\u201d [Laughter] It\u2019s like, \u201cWow! That\u2019s what I was trying to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAfter that Christmas break, I remember trying to pull my girlfriend where I was; and she kept pulling me back. Again, I\u2019m not blaming her; I <em>chose<\/em> to go lukewarm. I\u2019ll never forget, going to see her three or four months later, sort of surprising her at her university. She knew I was coming, but I was supposed to come a couple hours later. I had her key to her room\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m here!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014I peek in, and she\u2019s with another guy; it broke <em>my heart<\/em>. I remember looking at her\u2014\u201cI\u2019m going to marry this girl!\u201d\u2014even though, now, I\u2019m thinking\u2014\u201cI should have never been thinking I was going to marry her.\u201d When I saw that, it was like all those things I thought I might have been seeing\u2014there it is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It was evidence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cThat\u2019s who she is.\u201d People had even told me, \u201cYou don\u2019t really know who she is.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s who she is.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember sort of yelling at her; they looked at me, and I slammed the door. I <em>ran<\/em> to my car; I started driving 30 miles from her university to my hometown, and cried the whole way. I was <em>devastated<\/em>\u2014it was like: \u201cWhat did I just see? What is my life? What is happening?\u201d<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember I got to the back door of our house, walked in. I have the <em>greatest<\/em> single mom\u2014she loved me to death; she\u2019s a sweetheart\u2014she\u2019s with the Lord now\u2014but I remember she looked at me, and I\u2019m sobbing\u2014she\u2019s like, \u201cAre you okay?\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cI can\u2019t talk to you right now; I need to go to my room.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember I went straight to the back room, shut the door\u2014this is my childhood bedroom\u2014got right on my knees. Bob, I\u2019m telling you\u2014right there and then\u2014I said, \u201cJesus, I\u2019m all in; I\u2019ve been trying to control my life.\u201d I was sort of holding onto football; and I\u2019d just blown out my knee, and I didn\u2019t know if I\u2019d play again\u2014well, that went real well for me. And I\u2019d held onto this relationship with a girl; I wasn\u2019t willing to turn it over and do it God\u2019s way. Right then and there, I got on my knees and said, \u201cOkay, God; obviously, <em>my<\/em> plan is not a great one. Yours is better; I choose You. I put You on the throne of my life. I\u2019m going to do and go and be anything you want me to be. I don\u2019t know what that is, but I\u2019m completely all in.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the crazy thing\u2014I get done with that prayer\u2014and I know, at this moment, I have to grow spiritually. I\u2019ve been living in this town; I don\u2019t even have a church! All I know is that there\u2019s a woman, named Ann Baron, who\u2019s on fire. I say, \u201cGod, bump me into her because\u201d\u2014I don\u2019t want to date her\u2014\u201cshe\u2019s got a church, and she\u2019s got a fire. That\u2019s the kind of fire I want; I think she can help me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You had never, in the back of your mind, thought, \u201cShe\u2019s kind of cute.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I mean, I thought she was <em>extremely<\/em> cute; I was <em>not<\/em> attracted to date her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me ask you [Ann]\u2014from that bleacher conversation\u2014this is Dave Wilson, who had been the star of the football team at the high school. He\u2019s back, and he\u2019s two years older. All the girls are like, \u201cDave Wilson\u2019s in the gym.\u201d Were you looking at him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; I thought, \u201cHe may be super arrogant, but he is <em>so hot<\/em>. [Laughter] This guy is cute!\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut here\u2019s the thing, Bob\u2014the same night that Dave is on his knees, praying, I\u2019m working a night shift at Whirlpool\/the factory, shooting screws into dishwasher doors on an assembly line. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Her dad was a Whirlpool employee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; it was a great job for the summer, making lots of money. But it\u2019s this monotonous job, where you\u2019re shooting these screws in. I remember praying this whole time, like: \u201cGod, what am I doing? I\u2019m going to be in college next year. I feel like I\u2019m dating this guy, and it\u2019s going nowhere. I shouldn\u2019t be doing things I\u2019m doing with him. I feel like that\u2019s pulling me back; I want to grow!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said this prayer, like, \u201cGod, Jesus, I\u2019m done playing this game. I\u2019m going to be all in with you. I give you my life\/everything\u2014my future\/my boyfriend\u2014I will go anywhere You call me. I will do anything You want me to do. I will say anything You want me to say, God, because I am all Yours. I am all Yours from this day forward.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I was done praying that; and at the end of my prayer\u2014because I was new in my faith\u2014my sister led me to Jesus; I didn\u2019t really have anyone discipling me\u2014I was growing on my own, going to a church. At the end of the prayer, I thought, \u201cI wonder if Dave Wilson\u2019s home this summer?\u201d At the end of my prayer, I\u2019m like, \u201cLord, I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on with Dave Wilson,\u201d\u2014maybe, he\u2019s married at this point\u2014\u201cbut if you want me to bump into him, and he could help me grow, help me to just somehow bump into him. Amen!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> This sounds like a dating prayer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Sounds like a Hallmark<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It <em>is<\/em> a Hallmark movie! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> When I hear her saying this, it sounds like neither one of us had the right motivation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I wanted to grow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019m telling you\u2014my motivation was pure. The next morning, I get up; of course, I don\u2019t know she prayed that across the other side of town. I pick up my buddy, Greg, who was my high school kicker. We have a painting business, so we\u2019re going to paint my grandma\u2019s house; and you\u2019re not late to your grandma\u2019s house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>We\u2019re driving over there; and I tell Greg, \u201cDude, I surrendered my life to Jesus yesterday.\u201d He goes, \u201cWhat?!\u201d I told him this, and I told him my prayer. I literally walked through the whole thing. I said, at the end, \u201cI even prayed to bump into Ann Baron.\u201d He says, \u201cYou\u2019re not supposed to pray for yourself.\u201d I go, \u201cI don\u2019t know what you\u2019re supposed to pray, Greg; but that\u2019s what I prayed.\u201d He goes, \u201cThat\u2019s weird.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re driving to my grandma\u2019s, and we\u2019re going by the high school; it\u2019s just on the way. He goes, \u201cHey, let\u2019s stop in real quick and see Coach Jones,\u201d our high school football coach. I go, \u201cNo, dude; we\u2019ve got to get to my grandma\u2019s. We can\u2019t be late.\u201d \u201cNo; come on, man. Let\u2019s go.\u201d \u201cNo; we can\u2019t\u201d; I just say, \u201cNo; we\u2019re not.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe <em>reaches<\/em> over and flips the steering wheel, as I\u2019m driving; he just pushes it. I said, \u201cDude! Okay; we\u2019ll run in there for five minutes.\u201d We run in and say, \u201cHi,\u201d to Coach Jones. We\u2019re walking out; I\u2019m talking to Coach Jones. Greg\u2019s walking out in front of me, past the tennis courts. Greg\u2014\u201cMr. You\u2019re-not-supposed-to-pray-for-yourself\u201d goes\u2014\u201cOh, my gosh! God just answered your prayer, Dude!\u201d I go, \u201cWhat?\u201d He goes, \u201cLook!\u201d I turned; and there\u2019s Ann, playing tennis with her mom on this tennis court, as we\u2019re walking out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014which, I was in a tennis tournament that morning, and I had played <em>horribly<\/em>. We were driving home; and I said, \u201cOh, Mom. I need to get my stroke back. Let\u2019s stop at the high school court, and I can get my confidence back.\u201d We\u2019re hitting; and all of a sudden, Dave Wilson comes up to the fence; and he says [sounding like Dave], \u201cHey; when are <em>we<\/em> going to play?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> The truth is\u2014I stood there; she was with her back to me\u2014I was so afraid to say anything. Greg <em>hits<\/em> me and goes, \u201cDude! God answered your prayer!\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cHey, when are we going to play tennis?\u201d Long story short\u2014next morning, we played tennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> We <em>never<\/em> played tennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We never did; we sat and talked about Jesus. I remember asking her, \u201cWhat do you want to do with your life?\u201d She said, \u201cI\u2019m going to follow Jesus; I\u2019m going to serve Jesus. I believe He\u2019s got a call on my life.\u201d I remember getting in the car, and going, \u201cI\u2019ve never talked to an 18-year-old girl, who knew what she wanted to do with her life.\u201d It didn\u2019t matter whether I was a part of it or not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe started on a dating relationship, unlike any dating relationship either one of us had ever been a part of, because Christ was never the center. It was the first time\u2014as you said, Bob, earlier\u2014she\u2019s sprinting on the track; I\u2019m sprinting on the track; and Jesus was the center. I\u2019m not saying it was this perfect dating relationship, but it was the way God has designed dating and engagement to be\u2014it\u2019s like He\u2019s the beginning\u2014we prayed at the beginning; we prayed at the end. We kept ourself sexually pure. It was just a <em>totally<\/em> different perspective. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen when we went to the FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, we heard\u2014of all the things we heard\u2014\u201cHere\u2019s God\u2019s plan for your marriage; it\u2019s bigger than you. He wants to reveal to the world Who He is through marriage.\u201d We knew we were entering a partnership.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When your dad\u2014who knew Dave Wilson, because he\u2019d coached him as a baseball player\u2014knew his reputation, knew his past\u2014when he heard you\u2019re spending time with Dave Wilson, what did he say to <em>you<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> He said, \u201cYou are no longer going to see Dave Wilson; I <em>forbid<\/em> you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I was not allowed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I said, \u201cNo, Dad; Dave\u2019s different now.\u201d He goes, \u201cOh, yeah? I don\u2019t really care if you think he\u2019s different. I know his reputation, and you are <em>not<\/em> going to date him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What did you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> We were praying about it\u2014really praying\u2014like, \u201cLord, I pray that You\u2019d show my dad.\u201d The high school football coach happened to be with my dad. The high school football coach said, \u201cHey, I hear that Ann and Dave are hanging out.\u201d My dad said, \u201cYes; I\u2019m not going to let that happen.\u201d The coach said, \u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t you? He\u2019s one of the <em>nicest<\/em> guys I know\u201d; so my dad said, Okay\u201d!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He softened up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; I feel like that was God. By that point, he really saw something different in us; and he really trusted Dave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It really was\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014miraculous. Bob, do you see why we thought we wouldn\u2019t struggle?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Sure; it\u2019s this amazing story, and God\u2019s hand is all over it; \u201cTherefore, we won\u2019t have challenges in marriage.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And how long did it take before\u2014do you remember the first time you thought, \u201cI wonder if I made a mistake\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; six months\/six months, I yelled at Dave, \u201cMarrying you was the biggest mistake of my life\u201d; [thinking] \u201cHe\u2019s the wrong person; the right person is out there, and I should go find him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You shared that story in <em>Vertical Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, both the video series and the book. That was the beginning of what I would call the second chapter of your journey, because God took you through a refining process to get you ready for where He has you today\u2014speaking to hundreds of thousands of people, every day on radio\/on this podcast, as you speak at events. God had to take you through the purifying chapters. Those were not easy years, but it was part of His work to prepare you for how He wants to use you; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I think back\u2014we <em>started<\/em> dating with the right perspective\u2014that Jesus is the answer; Jesus is our source of life\u2014<em>not<\/em> the person I\u2019m dating. Then, you forget. We started our marriage; within months, we\u2019re like, \u201cYou need to do this, and you need to be this, so that I can be happy.\u201d Where are our eyes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014on the other person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Our eyes are on our spouse rather than, \u201cNo, no, no; it\u2019s back to: \u2018Jesus is the source.\u2019\u201d In the Book of Revelation, He speaks a revelation to John; and He says, \u201cYou\u2019ve lost your first love,\u201d to a church. It\u2019s interesting what He says to do: \u201cRepent and do the things you did at first.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you think about that in our marriage, or in anyone\u2019s marriage, it\u2019s like \u201crepent\u201d means go back and put Him back on the throne\u2014or \u201cvertical\u201d is what we call it\u2014\u201cRemember what you were doing when you were dating?\u2014when you really were passionate in love and you pursued with a reckless abandon?\u2014do that again.\u201d Again, I\u2019m not going to say we did it perfectly; but there is a way that He says to do in His Word, and it\u2019s the right way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And if you need a refresher, and you can get to one of the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> getaways this spring, do that.
