You guys apparently decided, at some point, early in your marriage, \u201cWe\u2019re just going to be kind of open with everybody about the reality of our life and our marriage.\u201d Because, as I\u2019ve talked to people, who listen to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, and ask them what they like about listening to you, one of the things they say is: \u201cWe like how real the Wilsons are, how transparent, how authentic, how they just kind of share real life with us.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We actually make all that stuff up; we\u2019re <em>perfect<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> No transparency! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We know other people have problems, so we make ours up. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you have a conversation, at some point in your marriage, where you said, \u201cAre we going to keep our stuff hidden back here, or are we going to put our stuff out on display on the front lawn?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Did we have a conversation? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I think we\u2019re both pretty open, and it would be really hard for us to not reveal who we really were; it felt inauthentic. I don\u2019t think we could do it; it felt fake. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve got a couple joining us this week\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014they take this to a whole other level. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They do! Rachel and Harold Earls are with us. Welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Thanks for having us on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> We\u2019re excited. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You guys\u2014actually, you kind of happened on this without being intentional about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You posted a video on YouTube without stopping to think, maybe, what the implications of that could be. Tell us about making this video right after you had started dating this cute guy from West Point. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> It was actually after I had graduated from college. Harold and I were supposed to get married the following year after he had graduated. I was a year ahead of him, and I had been wrestling a little bit of: \u201cWhat was I supposed to do?\u201d It felt like my life was on pause, because I knew we\u2019d be getting married; he was in the military, and our life would be taking off in that direction. Just trying to figure out, job wise, what to do, I felt a little bit of emptiness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne day, Harold kind of brought it up to me of: \u201cWhy don\u2019t you make a YouTube channel?\u201d I had no idea; I didn\u2019t watch YouTube videos. I didn\u2019t know that was a <em>thing<\/em>, but he knew that I had a love of videography. I used to always video our little dates together. I said, \u201cOkay!\u201d At the time, I was at my parents\u2019 house. I just went into my bedroom, pulled up my laptop, did the little self-camera on the computer, sat down, and filmed a little video of signs: \u201cYou\u2019re dating a West Point cadet.\u201d I thought it was silly. I thought nobody would see it except for Harold and my mom, which I showed it to right away: \u201cLook, who made this video.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Boy, were we wrong?! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> We had <em>no idea<\/em> how it was going to change our lives. Yes, we just thought it was silly. The very next day\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> I actually\u2014to go back on my side\u2014I was in my barracks room, doing homework\u2014probably, not actually, at my desk\u2014we had our door open. I had two cadets walk by; and they were like, \u201cAre you Harold Earls?\u201d I had no idea who these two were: \u201cYes, I am.\u201d They just <em>laughed<\/em> and walked off. I was like, \u201cWhat in the world?!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRachel had just told me that she posted a video. I had a buddy, right before that, actually text me and say, \u201cHey, man, how are you doing?\u201d I literally just saw him at baseball practice like two hours ago. I was like, \u201cWhat is this about?\u201d I was like, \u201cHold on a second.\u201d I texted my friend, wanting to know what was going on; talked to Rachel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTurns out the video was spreading like haywire across the West Point community, specifically the cadets. It is a very microcosm at West Point: 4,000 cadets. Things spread very fast in that community. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It\u2019s like a family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Exactly\u2014both good and bad. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next day, I actually was going to class into the historic Thayer Hall, walking through the hallway; and I heard my fianc\u00e9\u2019s <em>voice<\/em>. I was like, \u201cWhat is going on?\u201d I look into classrooms, and professors\/instructors had her video up in front of their classes. That\u2019s when I was like, \u201cOh my goodness!\u201d I think the whole transparency thing and kind of introducing us to a whole different world became very evident very, very quickly. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Rachel, give us a snapshot of what was in that video. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Oh, it was so corny and cheesy. I was just sitting in front of my bed. I think I had a camo teddy bear. I said something about you have a bunch of camo; you start saying military phrases: \u201cRoger,\u201d \u201cHooah,\u201d \u201cTrack in,\u201d\u2014just like so corny\u2014but it was also relatable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was the thing for me, as I was dating Harold and seeing, not just the military, but West Point\u2014it\u2019s this whole other world that you don\u2019t know anything about. It also was very relatable to the other girlfriends, who were excited that now there was a little bit of a voice\u2014you know?\u2014for what they were going through. I was getting a lot of pushback; people were making fun of me, giving Harold a little bit of grief; but then the girls really empowered me to keep going. I don\u2019t know\u2014just the fact that I did have a voice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you realize this thing has gone big time, and you\u2019re being shown in classrooms at West Point, I\u2019m thinking some people would go, \u201cThat is the last time I\u2019m every doing a video like that and putting that online; I don\u2019t want <em>that<\/em>.\u201d Other people would go, \u201cOh, wait! I\u2019m doing another one this afternoon.\u201d Which were <em>you<\/em>? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes, I think I filmed another one pretty much immediately. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was kind of exciting for you that people were paying attention to this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> What was number two? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> I don\u2019t remember. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> I remember it! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Oh, I <em>do<\/em> remember. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> She punched back at the cadets, which I <em>love<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> That\u2019s her personality, too; it\u2019s like: \u201cOkay; if you come at me, like I\u2019m going to punch back.\u201d She actually played the song\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> \u2014<em>Shake It Off<\/em> by Taylor Swift in the beginning. \u201cShake it off\u201d\u2014yes, for people making fun of me. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Good for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You weren\u2019t thinking anything more than \u201cThis is kind of a fun hobby.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Right; I didn\u2019t even know people made money doing it. It wasn\u2019t until I was watching <em>Dancing with the Stars<\/em>, and there was a YouTuber called\/or named Bethany Mota, who I, then, learned about. I was like, \u201cOh, wow; she makes a lot of money doing this! I could maybe turn this into a career.\u201d So I just kept going. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This had been <em>your<\/em> idea in the first place. You\u2019d been the one\u2014said to your girlfriend, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you make a YouTube channel?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; where did that come from? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Yes; so she had always had a passion with videography. I remember going to her house, and we would watch back old homemade videos. She called it <em>The Rachel Show<\/em>. She was like five years old\/seven years old, just making all these videos about cooking and sprinkles and just like all sorts of things. [Laughter] Then, in high school, she was on the video production team. She had always had this passion that God had put there to do something with video. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe thought that that meant\u2014and I\u2019ll just speak on behalf of you\u2014but thought that may have meant a news anchor\/a weather reporter\u2014because that\u2019s all that she could see with her own eyes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Never wanted to be a weather reporter\u2014and you <em>always<\/em> say that\u2014[Laughter]\u2014never in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> \u2014100 percent did; I think she did; I think she did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Never. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> These guys are kind of like <em>us<\/em>. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> It makes for a good story though. Let\u2019s continue; alright? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI saw this one family on YouTube, and they made videos. I was like, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you just post something on there?\u201d What I think was interesting\u2014she posted the video. It got some backlash; but for me, I loved how she felt empowered. It kind of was eye-opening to me that it gave her a voice, especially, in a world that was void of that voice. To me, it became very clear how: \u201cWow; God can use this in huge ways.\u201d I honestly felt like I kind of saw that, from the very beginning, that this could be a part of our life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> What do you mean God can use it in great ways?\u2014how? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Yes\u2014so, now, if you fast forward\u2014we have well over half a million followers just on YouTube\u2014a little over a million if you cumulative across our different platforms\u2014and that is a community that is rooted in who we are as a family. I mean, we share everything from our mundane life\u2014doing the dishes and hanging out as a family\u2014to some very intense moments of giving birth and finding out we\u2019re pregnant. I think that God uses all of the ordinary moments of our life that, not only are relatable to other people, but bring glory back to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was something, at the time, we could see, but not really see how He would use it. I love how Rachel\u2014if you want to talk about how we end every video\u2014I think is really a testament of how God is using our story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes; so we end every video with: \u201cLove God, love people, make a difference, and be thankful.\u201d That\u2019s kind of just how we want to live our life; but it was after continually to post these videos that I was starting to get messages from the people watching them, who would then share <em>their<\/em> life story with me and their hardships. Maybe, it brought them back to Jesus or to know Him for the first time, or it saved them during a difficult time of deployment or a hardship in their marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>We actually just, I think, two years ago now, started the Earls Fam Foundation, which was my dream after I started to see and hear those stories\u2014was to be able to give back to our community in a more personal way, financially, or we\u2019ve done just a bunch of different projects that we could impact their lives even further than just sharing our personal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> I think we realized we were going wide\u2014we were reaching <em>millions<\/em> of people in this community\u2014but we also wanted to go <em>deep<\/em>, because we knew that there were personal things that people were really struggling with. We realized we honestly were standing on their shoulders\/that we were able to be part of this because of <em>them<\/em>. It\u2019s like, \u201cWhat can we do to give back?\u201d I think that\u2019s beautiful how God has worked through that and allowed us to give back to people, really struggling, who follow us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t just about becoming famous\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014having a bunch of followers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Far from it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> You had a bigger dream. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s so funny that it\u2019s kind of where God has called me, because I would actually say I\u2019m way more of a private person. Any day, I could just not ever post anything ever again; but it\u2019s that constant thing from God, just reassuring me through people, and sharing: \u201cOkay; open up. Share what\u2019s going on in your life, because it is making a difference,\u201d and \u201cI am able to work through you here.\u201d But no; definitely never about any sort of fame or numbers\u2014I mean, I\u2019m not a money person\u2014so just, really, \u201cHow can we make a difference?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> I think that\u2019s the beautiful thing about it\u2014is those raw and emotional moments that happen, like: \u201cWe\u2019re trying to get pregnant. It\u2019s not going our way right now\u201d; but being raw on camera and sharing how you are feeling is so relatable to other people. It\u2019s like, when we\u2019ve had some hardships\u2014we thought that our boy, Wyatt, at the time, we had gotten news in a call from the doctor that he could possibly have\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> \u2014Spina bifida. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> \u2014Spina bifida. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor us, hearing that and recording that, it\u2019s tough. It\u2019s tough for us to go through, but we went through that with a community; and we were totally open. We just pressed, \u201cRecord,\u201d and we just heard all those moments for the first time. We pressed, \u201cRecord,\u201d when the doctor was talking to us. We just let the camera roll. We bring that community in on it, because we grow ourselves through life; and they grow alongside us. We don\u2019t claim to have all the answers by far. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> We don\u2019t have close to all the answers, but I think it\u2019s that growth\u2014and them seeing that growth, and seeing the relatability, and seeing just how open and honest we are about our life\u2014our failures, our family, our relationship with God\u2014I think that\u2019s really where that impact comes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m listening to you describe this, and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cAre you every day, throughout the day, going, \u2018Wait; get the camera on. I\u2019m about to order lunch; turn on the camera\u2019\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> It\u2019s now ubiquitous; it\u2019s part of our life. It\u2019s wild; it\u2019s a\u2014we don\u2019t even think about vlogging\u2014it\u2019s like we just pick up the camera and press, \u201cRecord.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Why aren\u2019t we vlogging this right now?\u2014huh? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> I should film your bald head. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Cameras\u2014did you say about bald head?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He did! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I like him! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I used to joke about bald guys, too; and now I\u2019m <em>bald<\/em>. [Laughter] It may be coming, dude. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Be careful. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis has just become: \u201cWe are bringing our friends into our life.\u201d Was there a time in your process of this, where you thought, \u201cWait a sec; do we really want to be this out in the open and sharing our life with people we don\u2019t know?\u201d I mean, what about privacy and what about independence? Do you ever take two weeks, where you don\u2019t vlog? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> It\u2019s definitely changed over the years. When I first started out, I was pretty much daily vlogging\u2014so doing it every single day. Now, as we\u2019ve become parents, and wrote a book, and we just have all these other things we are also doing, we cut our schedule back a little bit. We\u2019ve just been posting four times a week. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlso, something I think people don\u2019t understand is\u2014there is so much control with vlogging as well. Most of the time, a video is ten to fifteen minutes. That\u2019s ten to fifteen minutes out of my <em>entire<\/em> day. If I don\u2019t want to pick up the camera and hit, \u201cRecord,\u201d I don\u2019t have to; you know? There is a lot that you see, and there is a lot that you don\u2019t see as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Are there moments\u2014I\u2019m guessing there are\u2014well, I don\u2019t know\u2014that you are like, \u201cThat one is too intense. We\u2019re not going to let that out\u201d? Even, maybe, you filmed it; but it\u2019s like, \u201cIt\u2019s just not appropriate,\u201d or \u201cIt got too\u2026\u201d\u2014do you know what I\u2019m saying? I mean, when we\u2019re on stage speaking, there are moments like, \u201cWe can\u2019t go there.\u201d Our congregation is like, \u201cThey are the most open ever,\u201d and they don\u2019t know. There are some things\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Are there times that we didn\u2019t go there? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I don\u2019t even think\u2014I can\u2019t think of one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Probably not; but I think, if I had a camera on, there might be an edit coming, like: \u201cI don\u2019t know, honey; should we post that?\u2014because it went to level 10, and we\u2019re sort of capping everything at level 8.\u201d I\u2019m just asking; I don\u2019t know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Yes; for sure, we\u2019re human; right? We make mistakes. I think for us, one stuck out, earlier on. We were vlogging, and I did a prank pregnancy announcement and acted like Rachel was pregnant; we did it to one of her friends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor me, that was just <em>me<\/em> not realizing, at the time, there are so many thousands of people that struggle to get pregnant. For me to do that, and almost like poking fun, because we got pregnant\u2014and it was relatively easy at the time\u2014now, it is not so much the case. But we didn\u2019t know that. We posted it in fun, but we got a decent amount of pushback\u2014rightfully so\u2014that was just us being young and not understanding that this could be offensive and hurtful to other people. Of course, we said, \u201cHey, that\u2019s not okay,\u201d and we take that down. I think we definitely <em>learn<\/em> as we go. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> You talk about your community. Do you have a lot of people in the military that are following you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> We do have a decent following in the military. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Dave and I just had the opportunity to do an online marriage conference with military. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Oh, very cool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I feel it was one of our favorite conferences that we\u2019ve done, just because we were so thankful for how they\u2019ve served us. We also\u2014I don\u2019t think we are really aware how hard it is: for deployment, for marriages that are struggling, for the insecurity of not knowing the future. That\u2019s not an easy life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes; you know what\u2019s interesting? Being a military family, I think\u2014even just being online\u2014we didn\u2019t show too much of that side. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> But I think partly because I just wanted to show them that they could have an\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Normal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> \u2014almost normal life; you know? That is a response I heard from a lot of the women, of saying, \u201cI\u2019m so glad I found your vlogs to just give me an idea of what my life <em>could<\/em> look like,\u201d and taking away some of those fears, seeing that we still get to have time together, and love, and laugh, and be family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Are there any people in your family, or close friends, that don\u2019t like your vlog?\u2014or do they push back on it at all?\u2014or has it been relatively positive? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Not that they don\u2019t like the vlog, but we tend not to vlog other people. We like to keep it our just central family and respect other people. In the beginning, yes, there was a little bit of pushback. Specifically, more toward me\u2014family members thinking I might hurt Harold\u2019s career through vlogging. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> I think what is interesting is\u2014at first, you got pushback from your family and maybe some of your close friends\u2014because \u201cWhat was this world of YouTube?\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019re going to do this as\u2014what?\u2014a career?!\u201d\u2014right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> And because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> The older generation would totally think that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Exactly; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014narcissistic. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Now, if you look\u2014I mean, they did a study today\u2014one in three kids: when you ask them what they want to be, is a YouTuber and influencer; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> One in three?\u2014wow! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> One in three was the stat that came out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> It\u2019s wild. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Crazy; right? But at the time, they just can\u2019t see that. They can\u2019t see how God is working in you either; right? Sometimes, your family gives good advice; but sometimes, they cannot give good advice, because they want to protect you. They are like, \u201cHey, go out and get a \u2018real job.\u2019 Go out and get something that is safe and secure.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut God doesn\u2019t always operate you within that safe and secure area. Sometimes, you\u2019ve got to get outside those comfort zones to really be where He wants you. I think Rachel is really a testament of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes; I would say the cool thing about Harold and I\u2014and our relationship is, like he said\u2014even taking that scary step, a lot of people can\u2019t see past that. So friends really doubting, like: \u201cWhy are you filming yourself? This is so silly; people are going to make fun of you.\u201d But Harold and I have always been able to see further down the road of what this <em>could<\/em> be, but you have to take those scary steps to get there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You even think of what we\u2019ve been going through with COVID. As a pastor, if you are leading a church or part of a church that isn\u2019t digitally savvy\/hasn\u2019t been up on, you are sort of lost right now; because that\u2019s the way you\u2019re going to communicate with your family\/your congregation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of my phrases here is\u2014which is so corny, but I\u2019m\u2014preacher rhyme things; right? I\u2019ve always said, \u201cMake a dent where you\u2019re sent,\u201d\/ \u201cMake a dent where you are sent,\u201d\u2014that is God\u2019s call on our life. He has strategically placed us to make an impact. People always come up after and go: \u201cSo where am I sent?! I know where you are sent; you are a pastor. I know where a missionary is sent. Where am I sent?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy answer is profound\u2014do you know what it is?\u2014\u201cWhere you are is where you are sent.\u201d I\u2019m listening to your story; and I\u2019m like, \u201cLook at this. Who would have every thought, \u2018Make a dent where you are sent,\u2019\u2014online through YouTube\u2014that\u2019s <em>your<\/em> congregation; that\u2019s your <em>call<\/em>.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor us, who grew up in a world that didn\u2019t have that, we\u2019re like, \u201cYouTube!\u201d But when you listen to it, you\u2019re like: \u201cOh my goodness! What a world we live in that God can use a couple shooting a video in their house to lead people to the King of the kings.\u201d That\u2019s making a dent where you are sent. That\u2019s beautiful; it doesn\u2019t matter what it is. God has given you\/given me\u2014given us different realms. Do you think it has to be in a building on a stage?\u2014no; it doesn\u2019t. Wherever you are sent, use that as a strategic move of God and make a difference. You\u2019re doing it; way to go! I mean, seriously, way to go! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd to the listener, I want to say: \u201cWhere are you sent? Where are you living right now? Where is your apartment building? Where are your kids in school?\u201d I remember when our kids were playing sports, we were like, \u201cWe\u2019re not here to play sports; we\u2019re here to impact all the other parents, whose kids are on these sports teams. <em>That\u2019s<\/em> where we are sent right now.\u201d So anyway\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Man, this is good; buckle in and listen up! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I get excited thinking about it. I\u2019m like, \u201cWow; who would have ever thought this is a mission and a ministry?\u201d; and it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And to even explain it to your kids like that: \u201cThis isn\u2019t about our family. This is about helping other families.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat do you guys\u2014just a quick summary\u2014what do you hope your followers will gain? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> I think it all kind of rests on that final saying that we say of: \u201cLove God, love people, make a difference, and be thankful\u201d; but really, it\u2019s just to know that they can have a great fulfilling life if they are pursuing Jesus. They can find hope and joy. I just hope that they see that life is worth living every single day and to choose love. It\u2019s so easy to just get caught up in whatever is going on and mess up relationships, but to choose each other every single day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Summing it up in one sentence: \u201cMy hope is that they could see what a God-fearing, God-loving family looks like.\u201d Undoubtedly, it has its faults; it has its screw-ups; but it also has its beautiful moments. Our hope is, through all of this, we can show all those moments to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Many people have never <em>seen<\/em> that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; I\u2019m thinking about the one-third of kids, who say, \u201cI want to be an influencer.\u201d I\u2019m thinking most of them either want to be rich or they want to be famous. You guys want to be missionaries, and that\u2019s a completely different motivation. All of a sudden, now, it\u2019s: \u201cOkay; how can we point people to Jesus? How can we point people to the kingdom?\u2014rather than drawing attention to ourselves\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cand to family.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cor getting rich off of this.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m glad we\u2019ve had a chance to talk to you guys about your marriage, about Mount Everest, about your vlog. You guys apparently decided, at some point, early in your marriage, \u201cWe\u2019re just going to be kind of open with everybody about the reality of our life and our marriage.\u201d Because, as I\u2019ve talked to people, who listen to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, and ask them what they like about listening to you, one of the things they say is: \u201cWe like how real the Wilsons are, how transparent, how authentic, how they just kind of share real life with us.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We actually make all that stuff up; we\u2019re <em>perfect<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> No transparency! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We know other people have problems, so we make ours up. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you have a conversation, at some point in your marriage, where you said, \u201cAre we going to keep our stuff hidden back here, or are we going to put our stuff out on display on the front lawn?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Did we have a conversation? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I think we\u2019re both pretty open, and it would be really hard for us to not reveal who we really were; it felt inauthentic. I don\u2019t think we could do it; it felt fake. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve got a couple joining us this week\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014they take this to a whole other level. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They do! Rachel and Harold Earls are with us. Welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Thanks for having us on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> We\u2019re excited. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You guys\u2014actually, you kind of happened on this without being intentional about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You posted a video on YouTube without stopping to think, maybe, what the implications of that could be. Tell us about making this video right after you had started dating this cute guy from West Point. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> It was actually after I had graduated from college. Harold and I were supposed to get married the following year after he had graduated. I was a year ahead of him, and I had been wrestling a little bit of: \u201cWhat was I supposed to do?\u201d It felt like my life was on pause, because I knew we\u2019d be getting married; he was in the military, and our life would be taking off in that direction. Just trying to figure out, job wise, what to do, I felt a little bit of emptiness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne day, Harold kind of brought it up to me of: \u201cWhy don\u2019t you make a YouTube channel?\u201d I had no idea; I didn\u2019t watch YouTube videos. I didn\u2019t know that was a <em>thing<\/em>, but he knew that I had a love of videography. I used to always video our little dates together. I said, \u201cOkay!\u201d At the time, I was at my parents\u2019 house. I just went into my bedroom, pulled up my laptop, did the little self-camera on the computer, sat down, and filmed a little video of signs: \u201cYou\u2019re dating a West Point cadet.\u201d I thought it was silly. I thought nobody would see it except for Harold and my mom, which I showed it to right away: \u201cLook, who made this video.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Boy, were we wrong?! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> We had <em>no idea<\/em> how it was going to change our lives. Yes, we just thought it was silly. The very next day\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> I actually\u2014to go back on my side\u2014I was in my barracks room, doing homework\u2014probably, not actually, at my desk\u2014we had our door open. I had two cadets walk by; and they were like, \u201cAre you Harold Earls?\u201d I had no idea who these two were: \u201cYes, I am.\u201d They just <em>laughed<\/em> and walked off. I was like, \u201cWhat in the world?!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRachel had just told me that she posted a video. I had a buddy, right before that, actually text me and say, \u201cHey, man, how are you doing?\u201d I literally just saw him at baseball practice like two hours ago. I was like, \u201cWhat is this about?\u201d I was like, \u201cHold on a second.\u201d I texted my friend, wanting to know what was going on; talked to Rachel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTurns out the video was spreading like haywire across the West Point community, specifically the cadets. It is a very microcosm at West Point: 4,000 cadets. Things spread very fast in that community. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It\u2019s like a family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Exactly\u2014both good and bad. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next day, I actually was going to class into the historic Thayer Hall, walking through the hallway; and I heard my fianc\u00e9\u2019s <em>voice<\/em>. I was like, \u201cWhat is going on?\u201d I look into classrooms, and professors\/instructors had her video up in front of their classes. That\u2019s when I was like, \u201cOh my goodness!\u201d I think the whole transparency thing and kind of introducing us to a whole different world became very evident very, very quickly. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Rachel, give us a snapshot of what was in that video. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Oh, it was so corny and cheesy. I was just sitting in front of my bed. I think I had a camo teddy bear. I said something about you have a bunch of camo; you start saying military phrases: \u201cRoger,\u201d \u201cHooah,\u201d \u201cTrack in,\u201d\u2014just like so corny\u2014but it was also relatable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was the thing for me, as I was dating Harold and seeing, not just the military, but West Point\u2014it\u2019s this whole other world that you don\u2019t know anything about. It also was very relatable to the other girlfriends, who were excited that now there was a little bit of a voice\u2014you know?\u2014for what they were going through. I was getting a lot of pushback; people were making fun of me, giving Harold a little bit of grief; but then the girls really empowered me to keep going. I don\u2019t know\u2014just the fact that I did have a voice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you realize this thing has gone big time, and you\u2019re being shown in classrooms at West Point, I\u2019m thinking some people would go, \u201cThat is the last time I\u2019m every doing a video like that and putting that online; I don\u2019t want <em>that<\/em>.\u201d Other people would go, \u201cOh, wait! I\u2019m doing another one this afternoon.\u201d Which were <em>you<\/em>? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes, I think I filmed another one pretty much immediately. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was kind of exciting for you that people were paying attention to this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> What was number two? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> I don\u2019t remember. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> I remember it! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Oh, I <em>do<\/em> remember. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> She punched back at the cadets, which I <em>love<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> That\u2019s her personality, too; it\u2019s like: \u201cOkay; if you come at me, like I\u2019m going to punch back.\u201d She actually played the song\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> \u2014<em>Shake It Off<\/em> by Taylor Swift in the beginning. \u201cShake it off\u201d\u2014yes, for people making fun of me. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Good for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You weren\u2019t thinking anything more than \u201cThis is kind of a fun hobby.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Right; I didn\u2019t even know people made money doing it. It wasn\u2019t until I was watching <em>Dancing with the Stars<\/em>, and there was a YouTuber called\/or named Bethany Mota, who I, then, learned about. I was like, \u201cOh, wow; she makes a lot of money doing this! I could maybe turn this into a career.\u201d So I just kept going. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This had been <em>your<\/em> idea in the first place. You\u2019d been the one\u2014said to your girlfriend, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you make a YouTube channel?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; where did that come from? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Yes; so she had always had a passion with videography. I remember going to her house, and we would watch back old homemade videos. She called it <em>The Rachel Show<\/em>. She was like five years old\/seven years old, just making all these videos about cooking and sprinkles and just like all sorts of things. [Laughter] Then, in high school, she was on the video production team. She had always had this passion that God had put there to do something with video. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe thought that that meant\u2014and I\u2019ll just speak on behalf of you\u2014but thought that may have meant a news anchor\/a weather reporter\u2014because that\u2019s all that she could see with her own eyes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Never wanted to be a weather reporter\u2014and you <em>always<\/em> say that\u2014[Laughter]\u2014never in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> \u2014100 percent did; I think she did; I think she did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Never. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> These guys are kind of like <em>us<\/em>. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> It makes for a good story though. Let\u2019s continue; alright? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI saw this one family on YouTube, and they made videos. I was like, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you just post something on there?\u201d What I think was interesting\u2014she posted the video. It got some backlash; but for me, I loved how she felt empowered. It kind of was eye-opening to me that it gave her a voice, especially, in a world that was void of that voice. To me, it became very clear how: \u201cWow; God can use this in huge ways.\u201d I honestly felt like I kind of saw that, from the very beginning, that this could be a part of our life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> What do you mean God can use it in great ways?\u2014how? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Yes\u2014so, now, if you fast forward\u2014we have well over half a million followers just on YouTube\u2014a little over a million if you cumulative across our different platforms\u2014and that is a community that is rooted in who we are as a family. I mean, we share everything from our mundane life\u2014doing the dishes and hanging out as a family\u2014to some very intense moments of giving birth and finding out we\u2019re pregnant. I think that God uses all of the ordinary moments of our life that, not only are relatable to other people, but bring glory back to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was something, at the time, we could see, but not really see how He would use it. I love how Rachel\u2014if you want to talk about how we end every video\u2014I think is really a testament of how God is using our story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes; so we end every video with: \u201cLove God, love people, make a difference, and be thankful.\u201d That\u2019s kind of just how we want to live our life; but it was after continually to post these videos that I was starting to get messages from the people watching them, who would then share <em>their<\/em> life story with me and their hardships. Maybe, it brought them back to Jesus or to know Him for the first time, or it saved them during a difficult time of deployment or a hardship in their marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>We actually just, I think, two years ago now, started the Earls Fam Foundation, which was my dream after I started to see and hear those stories\u2014was to be able to give back to our community in a more personal way, financially, or we\u2019ve done just a bunch of different projects that we could impact their lives even further than just sharing our personal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> I think we realized we were going wide\u2014we were reaching <em>millions<\/em> of people in this community\u2014but we also wanted to go <em>deep<\/em>, because we knew that there were personal things that people were really struggling with. We realized we honestly were standing on their shoulders\/that we were able to be part of this because of <em>them<\/em>. It\u2019s like, \u201cWhat can we do to give back?\u201d I think that\u2019s beautiful how God has worked through that and allowed us to give back to people, really struggling, who follow us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t just about becoming famous\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014having a bunch of followers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Far from it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> You had a bigger dream. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s so funny that it\u2019s kind of where God has called me, because I would actually say I\u2019m way more of a private person. Any day, I could just not ever post anything ever again; but it\u2019s that constant thing from God, just reassuring me through people, and sharing: \u201cOkay; open up. Share what\u2019s going on in your life, because it is making a difference,\u201d and \u201cI am able to work through you here.\u201d But no; definitely never about any sort of fame or numbers\u2014I mean, I\u2019m not a money person\u2014so just, really, \u201cHow can we make a difference?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> I think that\u2019s the beautiful thing about it\u2014is those raw and emotional moments that happen, like: \u201cWe\u2019re trying to get pregnant. It\u2019s not going our way right now\u201d; but being raw on camera and sharing how you are feeling is so relatable to other people. It\u2019s like, when we\u2019ve had some hardships\u2014we thought that our boy, Wyatt, at the time, we had gotten news in a call from the doctor that he could possibly have\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> \u2014Spina bifida. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> \u2014Spina bifida. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor us, hearing that and recording that, it\u2019s tough. It\u2019s tough for us to go through, but we went through that with a community; and we were totally open. We just pressed, \u201cRecord,\u201d and we just heard all those moments for the first time. We pressed, \u201cRecord,\u201d when the doctor was talking to us. We just let the camera roll. We bring that community in on it, because we grow ourselves through life; and they grow alongside us. We don\u2019t claim to have all the answers by far. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> We don\u2019t have close to all the answers, but I think it\u2019s that growth\u2014and them seeing that growth, and seeing the relatability, and seeing just how open and honest we are about our life\u2014our failures, our family, our relationship with God\u2014I think that\u2019s really where that impact comes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m listening to you describe this, and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cAre you every day, throughout the day, going, \u2018Wait; get the camera on. I\u2019m about to order lunch; turn on the camera\u2019\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> It\u2019s now ubiquitous; it\u2019s part of our life. It\u2019s wild; it\u2019s a\u2014we don\u2019t even think about vlogging\u2014it\u2019s like we just pick up the camera and press, \u201cRecord.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Why aren\u2019t we vlogging this right now?\u2014huh? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> I should film your bald head. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Cameras\u2014did you say about bald head?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He did! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I like him! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I used to joke about bald guys, too; and now I\u2019m <em>bald<\/em>. [Laughter] It may be coming, dude. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Be careful. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis has just become: \u201cWe are bringing our friends into our life.\u201d Was there a time in your process of this, where you thought, \u201cWait a sec; do we really want to be this out in the open and sharing our life with people we don\u2019t know?\u201d I mean, what about privacy and what about independence? Do you ever take two weeks, where you don\u2019t vlog? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> It\u2019s definitely changed over the years. When I first started out, I was pretty much daily vlogging\u2014so doing it every single day. Now, as we\u2019ve become parents, and wrote a book, and we just have all these other things we are also doing, we cut our schedule back a little bit. We\u2019ve just been posting four times a week. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlso, something I think people don\u2019t understand is\u2014there is so much control with vlogging as well. Most of the time, a video is ten to fifteen minutes. That\u2019s ten to fifteen minutes out of my <em>entire<\/em> day. If I don\u2019t want to pick up the camera and hit, \u201cRecord,\u201d I don\u2019t have to; you know? There is a lot that you see, and there is a lot that you don\u2019t see as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Are there moments\u2014I\u2019m guessing there are\u2014well, I don\u2019t know\u2014that you are like, \u201cThat one is too intense. We\u2019re not going to let that out\u201d? Even, maybe, you filmed it; but it\u2019s like, \u201cIt\u2019s just not appropriate,\u201d or \u201cIt got too\u2026\u201d\u2014do you know what I\u2019m saying? I mean, when we\u2019re on stage speaking, there are moments like, \u201cWe can\u2019t go there.\u201d Our congregation is like, \u201cThey are the most open ever,\u201d and they don\u2019t know. There are some things\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Are there times that we didn\u2019t go there? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I don\u2019t even think\u2014I can\u2019t think of one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Probably not; but I think, if I had a camera on, there might be an edit coming, like: \u201cI don\u2019t know, honey; should we post that?\u2014because it went to level 10, and we\u2019re sort of capping everything at level 8.\u201d I\u2019m just asking; I don\u2019t know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Yes; for sure, we\u2019re human; right? We make mistakes. I think for us, one stuck out, earlier on. We were vlogging, and I did a prank pregnancy announcement and acted like Rachel was pregnant; we did it to one of her friends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor me, that was just <em>me<\/em> not realizing, at the time, there are so many thousands of people that struggle to get pregnant. For me to do that, and almost like poking fun, because we got pregnant\u2014and it was relatively easy at the time\u2014now, it is not so much the case. But we didn\u2019t know that. We posted it in fun, but we got a decent amount of pushback\u2014rightfully so\u2014that was just us being young and not understanding that this could be offensive and hurtful to other people. Of course, we said, \u201cHey, that\u2019s not okay,\u201d and we take that down. I think we definitely <em>learn<\/em> as we go. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> You talk about your community. Do you have a lot of people in the military that are following you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> We do have a decent following in the military. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Dave and I just had the opportunity to do an online marriage conference with military. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Oh, very cool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I feel it was one of our favorite conferences that we\u2019ve done, just because we were so thankful for how they\u2019ve served us. We also\u2014I don\u2019t think we are really aware how hard it is: for deployment, for marriages that are struggling, for the insecurity of not knowing the future. That\u2019s not an easy life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes; you know what\u2019s interesting? Being a military family, I think\u2014even just being online\u2014we didn\u2019t show too much of that side. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> But I think partly because I just wanted to show them that they could have an\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Normal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> \u2014almost normal life; you know? That is a response I heard from a lot of the women, of saying, \u201cI\u2019m so glad I found your vlogs to just give me an idea of what my life <em>could<\/em> look like,\u201d and taking away some of those fears, seeing that we still get to have time together, and love, and laugh, and be family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Are there any people in your family, or close friends, that don\u2019t like your vlog?\u2014or do they push back on it at all?\u2014or has it been relatively positive? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Not that they don\u2019t like the vlog, but we tend not to vlog other people. We like to keep it our just central family and respect other people. In the beginning, yes, there was a little bit of pushback. Specifically, more toward me\u2014family members thinking I might hurt Harold\u2019s career through vlogging. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> I think what is interesting is\u2014at first, you got pushback from your family and maybe some of your close friends\u2014because \u201cWhat was this world of YouTube?\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019re going to do this as\u2014what?\u2014a career?!\u201d\u2014right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> And because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> The older generation would totally think that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Exactly; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014narcissistic. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Now, if you look\u2014I mean, they did a study today\u2014one in three kids: when you ask them what they want to be, is a YouTuber and influencer; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> One in three?\u2014wow! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> One in three was the stat that came out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> It\u2019s wild. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Crazy; right? But at the time, they just can\u2019t see that. They can\u2019t see how God is working in you either; right? Sometimes, your family gives good advice; but sometimes, they cannot give good advice, because they want to protect you. They are like, \u201cHey, go out and get a \u2018real job.\u2019 Go out and get something that is safe and secure.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut God doesn\u2019t always operate you within that safe and secure area. Sometimes, you\u2019ve got to get outside those comfort zones to really be where He wants you. I think Rachel is really a testament of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> Yes; I would say the cool thing about Harold and I\u2014and our relationship is, like he said\u2014even taking that scary step, a lot of people can\u2019t see past that. So friends really doubting, like: \u201cWhy are you filming yourself? This is so silly; people are going to make fun of you.\u201d But Harold and I have always been able to see further down the road of what this <em>could<\/em> be, but you have to take those scary steps to get there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You even think of what we\u2019ve been going through with COVID. As a pastor, if you are leading a church or part of a church that isn\u2019t digitally savvy\/hasn\u2019t been up on, you are sort of lost right now; because that\u2019s the way you\u2019re going to communicate with your family\/your congregation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of my phrases here is\u2014which is so corny, but I\u2019m\u2014preacher rhyme things; right? I\u2019ve always said, \u201cMake a dent where you\u2019re sent,\u201d\/ \u201cMake a dent where you are sent,\u201d\u2014that is God\u2019s call on our life. He has strategically placed us to make an impact. People always come up after and go: \u201cSo where am I sent?! I know where you are sent; you are a pastor. I know where a missionary is sent. Where am I sent?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy answer is profound\u2014do you know what it is?\u2014\u201cWhere you are is where you are sent.\u201d I\u2019m listening to your story; and I\u2019m like, \u201cLook at this. Who would have every thought, \u2018Make a dent where you are sent,\u2019\u2014online through YouTube\u2014that\u2019s <em>your<\/em> congregation; that\u2019s your <em>call<\/em>.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor us, who grew up in a world that didn\u2019t have that, we\u2019re like, \u201cYouTube!\u201d But when you listen to it, you\u2019re like: \u201cOh my goodness! What a world we live in that God can use a couple shooting a video in their house to lead people to the King of the kings.\u201d That\u2019s making a dent where you are sent. That\u2019s beautiful; it doesn\u2019t matter what it is. God has given you\/given me\u2014given us different realms. Do you think it has to be in a building on a stage?\u2014no; it doesn\u2019t. Wherever you are sent, use that as a strategic move of God and make a difference. You\u2019re doing it; way to go! I mean, seriously, way to go! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd to the listener, I want to say: \u201cWhere are you sent? Where are you living right now? Where is your apartment building? Where are your kids in school?\u201d I remember when our kids were playing sports, we were like, \u201cWe\u2019re not here to play sports; we\u2019re here to impact all the other parents, whose kids are on these sports teams. <em>That\u2019s<\/em> where we are sent right now.\u201d So anyway\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Man, this is good; buckle in and listen up! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I get excited thinking about it. I\u2019m like, \u201cWow; who would have ever thought this is a mission and a ministry?\u201d; and it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And to even explain it to your kids like that: \u201cThis isn\u2019t about our family. This is about helping other families.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat do you guys\u2014just a quick summary\u2014what do you hope your followers will gain? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong> I think it all kind of rests on that final saying that we say of: \u201cLove God, love people, make a difference, and be thankful\u201d; but really, it\u2019s just to know that they can have a great fulfilling life if they are pursuing Jesus. They can find hope and joy. I just hope that they see that life is worth living every single day and to choose love. It\u2019s so easy to just get caught up in whatever is going on and mess up relationships, but to choose each other every single day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold:<\/strong> Summing it up in one sentence: \u201cMy hope is that they could see what a God-fearing, God-loving family looks like.\u201d Undoubtedly, it has its faults; it has its screw-ups; but it also has its beautiful moments. Our hope is, through all of this, we can show all those moments to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Many people have never <em>seen<\/em> that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; I\u2019m thinking about the one-third of kids, who say, \u201cI want to be an influencer.\u201d I\u2019m thinking most of them either want to be rich or they want to be famous. You guys want to be missionaries, and that\u2019s a completely different motivation. All of a sudden, now, it\u2019s: \u201cOkay; how can we point people to Jesus? How can we point people to the kingdom?\u2014rather than drawing attention to ourselves\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cand to family.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cor getting rich off of this.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m glad we\u2019ve had a chance to talk to you guys about your marriage, about Mount Everest, about your vlog.
