That was the most crushing blow we could have experienced. He was living on his own; he was back in Indiana at that time; he wasn\u2019t living too far from our home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI actually learned [of his death] by a member from the county coroner\u2019s office, coming to my office at the university, and showing me pictures of a body they found that they thought was our son. That was the hardest moment of my life, and then rushed from there to go tell my wife; I certainly didn\u2019t want her to hear from someone else. It was a crushing blow, because we knew our prodigal son would never come home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He died of an overdose? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> He did not. He ended up dying of sepsis\/of a blood infection. Because of his drug use, he had been in an accident that required multiple surgeries. It really tore up his knee. He ended up with an infected knee, and they just could not clear it; he ended up with an infection. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen they told us they found him, we thought for sure it probably was an overdose. He had just been resuscitated from an overdose just a month before. Many times, he had been resuscitated from drug overdoses\u2014never were they enough to turn him from his drug-using ways\u2014but in the end, it was a blood infection that took his life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When was the last time you talked with him? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> It was his birthday; we took him out for a meal for his birthday. We had texted after that, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is how long before\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> So a month before his death. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dave:<\/strong> So he was 30? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> He was 30. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was that birthday dinner like? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> You know, it was a cordial dinner; but you know, when your child is out of your home, and they are living a destructive lifestyle, it\u2019s: \u201cWhat do you talk about? What do you talk about that\u2019s not going to create conflict?\u201d \u201cHow do you show love? How do you communicate love?\u201d when you know there is a huge barrier there because of the choices that he is making. He knows it, and you know it; but it was a cordial\/a friendly dinner. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was never a time that our son parted from us that he didn\u2019t say, \u201cLove you, Pops!\u201d He always called me \u201cPops.\u201d We did not have the kind of relationship that we couldn\u2019t talk peacefully. I know there are some, who have prodigals, and they can\u2019t\/they just can\u2019t communicate at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you learn that your son is dead, did you begin to revisit all of that: \u201cWhat could we have done?\u201d \u201cWhat should we have done?\u201d\u2014stuff that had come up earlier; or were you at peace with the choices you\u2019d made, as parents? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> Certainly, there is some of that. You <em>can\u2019t<\/em>, when you see a loss of a child\u2014they\u2019ve lost their life because of destructive choices\u2014I can\u2019t imagine that you wouldn\u2019t sit back and say, \u201cCould we have done something different? Did we miss something?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll tell you, though, one of the <em>gifts<\/em> that my son gave me that, perhaps, helped in that time\u2014he said it once verbally, and then the very last Father\u2019s Day note that he gave me\u2014the last Father\u2019s Day that he was alive\u2014he just wrote it on a small torn-out piece of notebook paper\/just \u201cHappy Father\u2019s Day, Dad.\u201d He said, \u201cI know I\u2019ve made a lot of choices that have hurt you, and that you disagree with; and I know I haven\u2019t gone the path that you wanted me to go. But I know that you love me, and you\u2019ll always be there for me. The choices I\u2019ve made I\u2019ve made because I wanted to, and I want you to know it\u2019s not your fault.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> I came across that note just a couple weeks ago as I was cleaning some stuff out in my dresser. It was a gift from him to say that\u2014to know that <em>he<\/em> didn\u2019t feel that his choices were a failure on our part. Now, God will be the judge as to how well we\u2019ve done as parents; but I know that he didn\u2019t live with a sense of: \u201cMy parents mistreated me. My parents really messed up with me, and all that\u2019s happened is my parents\u2019 fault.\u201d That, in some sense, was a gift that gave me a certain peace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you have any sense that, maybe, in a quiet moment, there was a profession that never manifested itself in the fruit of repentance that we\u2019d all like to see? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> Of course, we can\u2019t speak for his final hours. We weren\u2019t there; only God knows. What we do know is that our prayers that our prodigal would come home never happened, and that was hard to live with; you know? That may be one the hardest moments for me\u2014was that next morning, when I go on my knees and began my day in prayer\u2014and I always pray for each of our children. Now, I\u2019m struck with the reality that there was one for whom I could no longer pray and that my most earnest prayer hadn\u2019t been answered. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> How do you regain <em>confidence<\/em> in prayer when a petition you\u2019ve made for \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>30 years<\/em> has been met with the silence of heaven? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh, how do you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> For me, it was spending time in the Garden of Gethsemane with Jesus and at the cross. In the garden, Jesus prayed the most earnest prayer; He pled to the Father, \u201cLet this cup pass from Me.\u201d His earnestness was so intense that He sweat great drops of blood. Then the next day, He\u2019s hanging on the cross; and the wrath of God is coming upon Him. Yet, what did Jesus do? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe later prayed again, and He prayed the greatest prayer of trust that was <em>ever<\/em> recorded in the Bible; He says, \u201cFather, into Your hands, I commit My spirit.\u201d In that deepest, darkest moment as He\u2019s about to step into death, He says, \u201cFather, I trust You completely.\u201d If Jesus can do that, I can follow His path; and I can trust the Father for the future. So pray\u2014pray with confidence and pray with earnestness\u2014because the Father can be trusted. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> What about your wife? Did she go through a similar journey in her faith? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> I think yes; I think, for her, probably the longest struggle is being able to experience joy again. One of the things that we faced\u2014that reality that many couples, who lose a child, face\u2014is that we mourn differently, and that\u2019s okay. We had to give each other space to do that and give each other understanding to mourn differently. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I think there are so many times in grief when we haven\u2019t gotten what we\u2019ve prayed for. I had a sister that died of cancer when she was 45; and you pray <em>for so long<\/em>, and you <em>never<\/em> have the prayer answered the way you want. I do remember, after my sister had passed, going before the Father on my knees, saying, \u201cI mad at You. You didn\u2019t answer this the way I had wanted. It doesn\u2019t make sense to me; but I will follow You at this point as an act of obedience, because my heart feels so dead; but I will follow You as an act of my will.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s a good <em>first<\/em> step of just\u2014and maybe, it\u2019s not a first step; maybe, it takes a while to get to that point\u2014but there is a point that I felt like He carried me. I\u2019m sure your wife and you have felt that at times, too, like you\u2019re desperate for Him\/for Jesus to heal your <em>own<\/em> heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> He is the only One who can do it; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> The great promise in Scripture is that God will not leave us destitute of comfort. Tears may flood us in the night, but joy will come in the morning. God will not leave us. That period of mourning may be different\u2014that period of grief and testing may seem very long\u2014but ultimately, God will come; and He will bring His comfort. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Is that what you would say to a parent, listening right now, who has got a 15-year-old\/14-year-old\u2014back when you first started that journey\u2014what would you say to them? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Craig:<\/strong> I would say two things. One: \u201cRemember that your hope is in God and not your children.\u201d If you build your hope on your children, and how they turn out, if they make wrong choices, the journey is going to be terrifying; if they end tragically, like ours, it\u2019s going to be absolutely devastating. But when you put your hope in God, no matter what happens, you know He\u2019ll see you through it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing I would say to them is: \u201cAlways hold out hope to the prodigal.\u201d You know, obviously, there are different stages people go through. Early on, it\u2019s a little bit different than in the end. When people live a destructive life, and you look and see how messy their life has become, putting it back together seems like I\u2019m [un-scrabbling] an egg. It seems an impossible thing to do, and it will to them as well. We\u2019ve seen that desperate look in people in our homeless community. I mean, their lives are so fractured\u2014every relationship they have\u2014to put it all back together seems <em>impossible<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you want to do is hold out hope that it can be done in Christ; and that you\u2019ll be there with them, and you\u2019ll help them walk through it. If you can hold anything out to your prodigal, hold out hope; because we\u2019ve all heard the stories of people, who have borne very difficult things\u2014whether it is people in concentration camps or people who live with horrendous illnesses\u2014and what gets them through it?\u2014it is hope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The verse that\u2019s been echoing in my own head, as you\u2019ve been talking, is the last verses in the Book of Habakkuk, where it is talking about agricultural stuff\u2014you know, there is no fruit on the vine; there are no blossoms on the fig tree; and the olive plants are failing. That\u2019s not what we\u2019re facing; but it can feel that way when you\u2019ve got a child, who is acting out like there is no fruit on the vine; what we\u2019ve been hoping for and praying for is not coming to pass.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat do you do? Habakkuk says, \u201cYet, I will rejoice in the Lord.\u201d That\u2019s where I\u2019m going to find joy\u2014not in the circumstances\/not of life in a fallen world\u2014\u201cI\u2019m going to rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.\u201d You\u2019ve got to go back there and say, \u201cLord, restore the joy; because it\u2019s gone. You\u2019re my source of joy; God, the Lord, is my strength.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think a lot of parents, who are in difficult situations, you look at the difficult situation\/circumstances and you go: \u201cWhere do I find hope?\u201d \u201cWhere do I find joy?\u201d \u201cWhere do I find peace?\u201d Where do I find\u2026\u201d\u2014well, you find it in the Lord; and you go to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> Joy is something you have to decide to <em>fight<\/em> for every day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I am grateful\u2014and I know our listeners are grateful\u2014that <em>you<\/em> had the courage\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014it really is courage\u2014and you said, \u201cWe\u2019re going to take our pain, and we\u2019re going to comfort others with the comfort with which we\u2019ve been comforted and try to use this redemptive-ly in other people\u2019s lives.\u201d You\u2019ve done that, here, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>; you\u2019ve done it in your book. While Craig and his wife tried every avenue possible to find him help, Eric continued to use.","meta_box":{"show_notes":"","transcript_url":"https:\/\/transcript.familylife.com\/fl2020-11-20.pdf","transcript_content":"<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig: <\/strong>At the end of his 15-year journey, he died tragically on January 18 of 2017. That was the most crushing blow we could have experienced. He was living on his own; he was back in Indiana at that time; he wasn\u2019t living too far from our home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI actually learned [of his death] by a member from the county coroner\u2019s office, coming to my office at the university, and showing me pictures of a body they found that they thought was our son. That was the hardest moment of my life, and then rushed from there to go tell my wife; I certainly didn\u2019t want her to hear from someone else. It was a crushing blow, because we knew our prodigal son would never come home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He died of an overdose? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> He did not. He ended up dying of sepsis\/of a blood infection. Because of his drug use, he had been in an accident that required multiple surgeries. It really tore up his knee. He ended up with an infected knee, and they just could not clear it; he ended up with an infection. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen they told us they found him, we thought for sure it probably was an overdose. He had just been resuscitated from an overdose just a month before. Many times, he had been resuscitated from drug overdoses\u2014never were they enough to turn him from his drug-using ways\u2014but in the end, it was a blood infection that took his life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When was the last time you talked with him? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> It was his birthday; we took him out for a meal for his birthday. We had texted after that, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is how long before\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> So a month before his death. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dave:<\/strong> So he was 30? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> He was 30. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was that birthday dinner like? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> You know, it was a cordial dinner; but you know, when your child is out of your home, and they are living a destructive lifestyle, it\u2019s: \u201cWhat do you talk about? What do you talk about that\u2019s not going to create conflict?\u201d \u201cHow do you show love? How do you communicate love?\u201d when you know there is a huge barrier there because of the choices that he is making. He knows it, and you know it; but it was a cordial\/a friendly dinner. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was never a time that our son parted from us that he didn\u2019t say, \u201cLove you, Pops!\u201d He always called me \u201cPops.\u201d We did not have the kind of relationship that we couldn\u2019t talk peacefully. I know there are some, who have prodigals, and they can\u2019t\/they just can\u2019t communicate at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you learn that your son is dead, did you begin to revisit all of that: \u201cWhat could we have done?\u201d \u201cWhat should we have done?\u201d\u2014stuff that had come up earlier; or were you at peace with the choices you\u2019d made, as parents? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> Certainly, there is some of that. You <em>can\u2019t<\/em>, when you see a loss of a child\u2014they\u2019ve lost their life because of destructive choices\u2014I can\u2019t imagine that you wouldn\u2019t sit back and say, \u201cCould we have done something different? Did we miss something?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll tell you, though, one of the <em>gifts<\/em> that my son gave me that, perhaps, helped in that time\u2014he said it once verbally, and then the very last Father\u2019s Day note that he gave me\u2014the last Father\u2019s Day that he was alive\u2014he just wrote it on a small torn-out piece of notebook paper\/just \u201cHappy Father\u2019s Day, Dad.\u201d He said, \u201cI know I\u2019ve made a lot of choices that have hurt you, and that you disagree with; and I know I haven\u2019t gone the path that you wanted me to go. But I know that you love me, and you\u2019ll always be there for me. The choices I\u2019ve made I\u2019ve made because I wanted to, and I want you to know it\u2019s not your fault.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> I came across that note just a couple weeks ago as I was cleaning some stuff out in my dresser. It was a gift from him to say that\u2014to know that <em>he<\/em> didn\u2019t feel that his choices were a failure on our part. Now, God will be the judge as to how well we\u2019ve done as parents; but I know that he didn\u2019t live with a sense of: \u201cMy parents mistreated me. My parents really messed up with me, and all that\u2019s happened is my parents\u2019 fault.\u201d That, in some sense, was a gift that gave me a certain peace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you have any sense that, maybe, in a quiet moment, there was a profession that never manifested itself in the fruit of repentance that we\u2019d all like to see? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> Of course, we can\u2019t speak for his final hours. We weren\u2019t there; only God knows. What we do know is that our prayers that our prodigal would come home never happened, and that was hard to live with; you know? That may be one the hardest moments for me\u2014was that next morning, when I go on my knees and began my day in prayer\u2014and I always pray for each of our children. Now, I\u2019m struck with the reality that there was one for whom I could no longer pray and that my most earnest prayer hadn\u2019t been answered. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> How do you regain <em>confidence<\/em> in prayer when a petition you\u2019ve made for \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>30 years<\/em> has been met with the silence of heaven? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh, how do you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> For me, it was spending time in the Garden of Gethsemane with Jesus and at the cross. In the garden, Jesus prayed the most earnest prayer; He pled to the Father, \u201cLet this cup pass from Me.\u201d His earnestness was so intense that He sweat great drops of blood. Then the next day, He\u2019s hanging on the cross; and the wrath of God is coming upon Him. Yet, what did Jesus do? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe later prayed again, and He prayed the greatest prayer of trust that was <em>ever<\/em> recorded in the Bible; He says, \u201cFather, into Your hands, I commit My spirit.\u201d In that deepest, darkest moment as He\u2019s about to step into death, He says, \u201cFather, I trust You completely.\u201d If Jesus can do that, I can follow His path; and I can trust the Father for the future. So pray\u2014pray with confidence and pray with earnestness\u2014because the Father can be trusted. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> What about your wife? Did she go through a similar journey in her faith? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> I think yes; I think, for her, probably the longest struggle is being able to experience joy again. One of the things that we faced\u2014that reality that many couples, who lose a child, face\u2014is that we mourn differently, and that\u2019s okay. We had to give each other space to do that and give each other understanding to mourn differently. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I think there are so many times in grief when we haven\u2019t gotten what we\u2019ve prayed for. I had a sister that died of cancer when she was 45; and you pray <em>for so long<\/em>, and you <em>never<\/em> have the prayer answered the way you want. I do remember, after my sister had passed, going before the Father on my knees, saying, \u201cI mad at You. You didn\u2019t answer this the way I had wanted. It doesn\u2019t make sense to me; but I will follow You at this point as an act of obedience, because my heart feels so dead; but I will follow You as an act of my will.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s a good <em>first<\/em> step of just\u2014and maybe, it\u2019s not a first step; maybe, it takes a while to get to that point\u2014but there is a point that I felt like He carried me. I\u2019m sure your wife and you have felt that at times, too, like you\u2019re desperate for Him\/for Jesus to heal your <em>own<\/em> heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> He is the only One who can do it; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> The great promise in Scripture is that God will not leave us destitute of comfort. Tears may flood us in the night, but joy will come in the morning. God will not leave us. That period of mourning may be different\u2014that period of grief and testing may seem very long\u2014but ultimately, God will come; and He will bring His comfort. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Is that what you would say to a parent, listening right now, who has got a 15-year-old\/14-year-old\u2014back when you first started that journey\u2014what would you say to them? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Craig:<\/strong> I would say two things. One: \u201cRemember that your hope is in God and not your children.\u201d If you build your hope on your children, and how they turn out, if they make wrong choices, the journey is going to be terrifying; if they end tragically, like ours, it\u2019s going to be absolutely devastating. But when you put your hope in God, no matter what happens, you know He\u2019ll see you through it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing I would say to them is: \u201cAlways hold out hope to the prodigal.\u201d You know, obviously, there are different stages people go through. Early on, it\u2019s a little bit different than in the end. When people live a destructive life, and you look and see how messy their life has become, putting it back together seems like I\u2019m [un-scrabbling] an egg. It seems an impossible thing to do, and it will to them as well. We\u2019ve seen that desperate look in people in our homeless community. I mean, their lives are so fractured\u2014every relationship they have\u2014to put it all back together seems <em>impossible<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you want to do is hold out hope that it can be done in Christ; and that you\u2019ll be there with them, and you\u2019ll help them walk through it. If you can hold anything out to your prodigal, hold out hope; because we\u2019ve all heard the stories of people, who have borne very difficult things\u2014whether it is people in concentration camps or people who live with horrendous illnesses\u2014and what gets them through it?\u2014it is hope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The verse that\u2019s been echoing in my own head, as you\u2019ve been talking, is the last verses in the Book of Habakkuk, where it is talking about agricultural stuff\u2014you know, there is no fruit on the vine; there are no blossoms on the fig tree; and the olive plants are failing. That\u2019s not what we\u2019re facing; but it can feel that way when you\u2019ve got a child, who is acting out like there is no fruit on the vine; what we\u2019ve been hoping for and praying for is not coming to pass.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat do you do? Habakkuk says, \u201cYet, I will rejoice in the Lord.\u201d That\u2019s where I\u2019m going to find joy\u2014not in the circumstances\/not of life in a fallen world\u2014\u201cI\u2019m going to rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.\u201d You\u2019ve got to go back there and say, \u201cLord, restore the joy; because it\u2019s gone. You\u2019re my source of joy; God, the Lord, is my strength.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think a lot of parents, who are in difficult situations, you look at the difficult situation\/circumstances and you go: \u201cWhere do I find hope?\u201d \u201cWhere do I find joy?\u201d \u201cWhere do I find peace?\u201d Where do I find\u2026\u201d\u2014well, you find it in the Lord; and you go to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Craig:<\/strong> Joy is something you have to decide to <em>fight<\/em> for every day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I am grateful\u2014and I know our listeners are grateful\u2014that <em>you<\/em> had the courage\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014it really is courage\u2014and you said, \u201cWe\u2019re going to take our pain, and we\u2019re going to comfort others with the comfort with which we\u2019ve been comforted and try to use this redemptive-ly in other people\u2019s lives.\u201d You\u2019ve done that, here, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>; you\u2019ve done it in your book.
