Instead of bailing them out, John Perkins found himself in jail. He found himself meditating on the words of Scripture that said, \u201cDo not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.\u201d\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> That\u2019s what started happening to me when I was in the jail and was tortured. I saw evil in those white folks, and then I thought about God; I said, \u201cLord, if You let me out of this jail tonight, I\u2019d like to preach a gospel that could save us together.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, October 16<sup>th<\/sup>. Those folks who aren\u2019t familiar with the name, John Perkins, are going to get introduced to someone who has demonstrated for us\/modeled for us what it looks like to pursue racial harmony and racial reconciliation within the body of Christ.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Could there be a more appropriate topic at this time?\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I think we need a hero in these days.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Kim Anthony, who hosts FamilyLife\u2019s <em>Unfavorable Odds <\/em>podcast, which is part of the FamilyLife Podcast Network, had a chance to visit with Dr. Perkins recently. He lives in Mississippi, where he has lived most of his life. She, in her conversation with him, just spent time reviewing God\u2019s work in his life and helping all of us, I think, understand the realities of racial prejudice\u2014in the deep South, certainly, but throughout America\u2014and what it\u2019s been like for Dr. Perkins to live through this. He was born in 1930.\n\nWe\u2019re going to dive in; we\u2019ll hear a couple of segments. This first segment we\u2019re going to hear from Kim and Dr. Perkins just takes us through the early years of his life, growing up in rural Mississippi.\n\n[<em>Unfavorable Odds <\/em>Podcast]\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> Dr. Perkins, as of this interview, you have just celebrated your 90<sup>th<\/sup> birthday and your 70<sup>th<\/sup> wedding anniversary; congratulations.\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> Thank you; thank you. I\u2019m so grateful for spending this 70 years with Vera Mae; and every day, I weep in gratitude. How could I have been so lucky? God has been good. [Emotion in voice]\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> You\u2019ve seen a lot, and you\u2019ve been through a lot.\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> Yes, yes.\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> If you will, will you take me back in time to what your world looked like when you were born in rural Mississippi?\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> My mother died when I was seven months old. She died, and I lived. I was probably taking the milk that she needed for herself; I was probably draining that out. It\u2019s sort of like she sort of gave her life\u2014she died, and I lived. I think that\u2019s the greatest motivation; I\u2019m looking forward to that day when I see her face to face.\n\nHopefully, we could have a conversation, and I\u2019m excited about it. I want her to say, \u201cWell done\u201d; and I\u2019d probably take that for my 17 or so honorary doctorate\u2019s degrees. Got the\u2014sort of like the Academy Award of preaching\u2014Chuck Colson Award of all of that; Wilberforce Award for my lifetime work. She don\u2019t care nothing like about that. She going to ask me, \u201cWhat did I do for people like her?\u201d\n\nAfter she died, an old lady, lived down the street, saw me as a little skin and bones. She brought a quart of milk every day to my house. That milk saved my life; my mind was saved too. [Emotion in voice] That\u2019s another thing, because that milk saved my mind. I dropped out of school when I was somewhere about the third and fifth grade, but that was my early life.\n\nThe first thing I can remember in a house of\u2014we was bootleggers and gamblers\u2014that would be like a dope house today: a lot of children, lot of cousins born out of wedlock, and all of that in the community. My aunts didn\u2019t get married; but they had these babies, my cousins; and I love them dearly. The first thing I can remember\u2014we was probably playing in the house, all of us\u2014and I probably said, because they was calling their momma, \u201cMomma\u201d\u2014and I remember one of my aunts said, \u201cYour mother\u2019s dead.\u201d I felt totally <em>alone<\/em>.\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> Dr. Perkins came from a family of sharecroppers, which was <em>far<\/em> from lucrative to say the least.\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> The sharecropper\u2019s system was like just a step up from the slave system.\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> At a young age, Dr. Perkins would learn a hard reality about the economy and how it worked for black people in the South.\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> I became sort of an economist when I was a boy of about 11 years old. It was during World War II. I worked a day\/almost a full day for a white man, who asked me and the other guy to work. We thought we were going to get a dollar\/dollar-and-a-half for that day\u2019s work.\n\nBut at the back\u2014he had us to come through the kitchen; you couldn\u2019t come through the living room\u2014black folks had to go into the back kitchen door; go back out through the kitchen door. We came in the back kitchen and he paid us. He gave me a dime and a buffalo nickel. I was expecting to get about a dollar\/dollar-and-a-half for that day\u2019s work\u2014that\u2019s what it was going back there.\n\nI really wanted to throw that 15 cents on the ground. I hadn\u2019t accepted, \u201cYou were nothing, and they were something. They were the master, and you was their...\u201d I didn\u2019t fall for that; because I remember, when we were about two or three years old, the sheriff came to look for whiskey in our house. My grandmother said he must have brought it in there\u2014so he found a half a pint\u2014then he said he\u2019s going to take Grandma to jail. She said to the sheriff\/a white sheriff: \u201cAre you a fool?\u201d She said, \u201cYou think I\u2019m going to go to jail with <em>you<\/em> and leave these children here?\u201d My dignity was affirmed there, and I haven\u2019t lost it; thank God.\n\nNow, it\u2019s not many people grow up in that kind of environment\u2014because most people grow up in the back, trying to please the white man, because that was what they were supposed to be\u2014inferior. I grew up thinking that I was created in the image of God, and I didn\u2019t even know God.\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> His confidence in who he was did not match what was expected from a black person in the South during those times. Dr. Perkins\u2019 family would soon feel the need to send him out of state for his own safety. It all started after his brother, Clyde, came back from fighting in World War II. Clyde was talking with his girlfriend, waiting to see a movie.\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> In his own town, in the alley way of a little theater\u2014the blacks had to go up in the side so they could go upstairs, and the white folk went in the front door down there\u2014and the boys were just coming home from the service. That\u2019s a jubilant time!\u2014they\u2019d been gone about three or four years, fighting for the country.\n\nThen the police came up behind him, and hit him on the head, telling them black folks to be quiet. He turned around as a soldier: \u201cI was a soldier.\u201d When you become a soldier, you believe that you can whoop anybody with your hand; you don\u2019t need a gun. They hit him, and he turned around and grabbed a club. The policeman took the other hand and shot him in the stomach two times.\n\n[Studio]\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019ve been listening to a portion of an interview that Kim Anthony did with Dr. John Perkins recently\u2014a part of her podcast called <em>Unfavorable Odds, <\/em>which is part of the FamilyLife Podcast Network. Listening to Dr. Perkins share his story\/his brother\u2019s death at the hand of the police, you can understand where\u2014\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh, I mean, the heartbreak is real; but the anger and the bitterness that you would have to feel\u2014\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014even the rage.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014it\u2019s real.\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And how <em>unjust<\/em> it must have felt.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; and to not know Christ\u2014at that point, Dr. Perkins has not been converted\u2014when you experience that, all you know to do is fight back\/to want to harm the people who brought harm to you.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I mean, in some ways, that\u2019s the DNA of the human soul\u2014\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014revenge; you pay back. Anything less than that is not acceptable.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019re going to jump ahead. Dr. Perkins, in the \u201870s, was living again in Mississippi. There had been a group of students, who had been arrested for participation in a civil rights march. Dr. Perkins, who at this point, had come to faith in Christ, went to the jail in Brandon, Mississippi, to bail these protestors out of jail. He found the police were waiting for him.\n\n[<em>Unfavorable Odds <\/em>Podcast]\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> Dr. Perkins, I\u2019d like to take you back to the ambush in Brandon; because as I read that part of your story, it was so powerful for me. I have experienced racism, yes; but I did not have to go through what you and your team went through during that time. Would you take me back to that jailhouse and describe what it was like for you?\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> It looked like they might have tricked us into coming to the jail; because I would come up to make bond for them, and that\u2019s when they met us at the car and got us out of the car. They started beating us on the way to the jail; they started torturing me in that jailhouse. You know, I thought they were going to kill us.\n\nI remember when they stopped torturing us; because the FBI was supposed to be on their way and all of that. They stopped; then they made me wash up my blood from the floor; it was just blood everywhere. Then, when I got in that hall to go upstairs, there was two guys who hadn\u2019t beat us. Boy, they tried to beat us all the way up the steps. It was like I was going in and out of life; that was <em>torture<\/em>. It was then I said, \u201cOh, Lord, these are animals.\u201d\n\nIf I had a hand grenade, I would have pulled the plug. I would have been Samson\u2014all the students would have been killed; I\u2019d have been killed\u2014but all those white folks would have been killed too. It was then I saw that I was broken too. I saw myself as them\u2014my reaction in my heart\u2014I had the capability of killing them. Then that\u2019s when I said, \u201cGod, if You let me out of this jail tonight, I want to preach a gospel that could save us together. \u2018All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned\u2026\u2019\u201d\u2014and He going to say to Nicodemus\u2014\u201cHow can these things be?\u201d\u2014He said, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to be born again.\u201d You are born the first time with the Adam\u2019s spirit; you\u2019re born this time with God\u2019s Spirit.\n\nNicodemus was saying, \u201cHow can this be?\u201d He said, \u201cBecause God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believe on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. He sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He that believeth on Him is not condemned; he that believeth not is condemned already.\u201d\n\nI don\u2019t think we read those ideas that we\u2019ve got to be born again; we\u2019ve got to know God in a deeper way. You confess your sin, and you\u2019re just as like you\u2019ve never sinned. So now He\u2019ll invite you to this; but if you sin, and when you sin, you still have a Advocate with the Father. Oh, that\u2019s love! \u201cWhat kind of love is this?\u2014what kind of love is this that God would make us to be His children?\u201d John said that\u2019s who we are.\n\nIt hasn\u2019t been me hating white folks and getting them over their hate. It\u2019s the fact that they have been washing my wounds too. When I went in the hospital after that, there was white doctors and white nurses and black doctors and black nurses. They took care of me. I didn\u2019t want no white ones around me; they washed my wounds too. They out-loved me.\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> Do you think love is the key to reconciliation?\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> Love is the absolute; justice is number two. Justice comes out of God\u2019s love for us; He so loved us. Don\u2019t kill them;\u00a0 Black Lives Matter is: \u201cI can\u2019t breathe! I can\u2019t breathe! I can\u2019t breathe. You\u2019re killing me, getting life out of me.\u201d We need to get together\u2014white folk\/black folk\u2014Lord, have mercy!\n\nWe\u2019re at a crossroad. We\u2019ve got the greatest constitution on paper that ever been thought out. We hold these truths to be self-evident that all humankind was created equal to reflect God in that image; and now, what are we doing? We keep backing away from dignity\/an affirmation of that. This is a pivot time right now.\n\nI could ask Martin a question; he would always answer. When he came out of jail, beat up on the Pettus Bridge\u2014he would always answer the question: \u201cWhere do we go from here?\u201d\u2014\u201cIt ain\u2019t going to be the same. When dignity is affirmed, blacks got to love whites; whites got to love blacks. We\u2019ve got to love one another.\u201d\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> In your latest book, called <em>Dream with Me<\/em>, it seems like it\u2019s more of a call to action, which is what you\u2019re about; right?\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> It\u2019s a call to discipleship.\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> \u2014a call to discipleship. What do you see out there, as you tour the country\u2014before the COVID-19 crisis\u2014what did you see out there that gives you hope?\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> I think the multi-cultural churches was giving me the greatest hope. There\u2019s a group that\u2019s called the Mosaic\/there\u2019s a group that\u2019s called the Christian Community Development Association.\n\nNow, like #MeToo movement. I\u2019m so glad women are getting a chance; women have suffered a lot. Black women had to take the burden of us to save us. If I didn\u2019t have Vera Mae, who would I be with a third-grade education? But since I married a PhD English-type person\u2014without her what would I\u2019d have been?\u2014I\u2019m grateful.\n\nI\u2019m grateful for you; I\u2019m grateful for people who are thinking about these issues. We can make a better future, I think. Just like when trials come, that becomes an opportunity. The problem I can\u2019t solve, then I have to call on God; James says, \u201cCount it all joy\u2026\u201d\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> Not only have you impacted this nation and this world with your work, but you\u2019ve impacted me and my family personally. I thank you that I had the honor of living a life that has been far different from yours, but having opportunities that I may not have had, had it not been for people like you.\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> I want to thank you, girl. I want to thank you. You are my reward! You are my joy. That\u2019s what Paul says in Philippians\u2014He says, \u201cThe struggle we went through forming this church\u201d\u2014we\u2019re getting beat up in jail and all of that\u2014\u201cbut you\u2019re the first one who helped me. You have been with me.\u201d And he said, \u201cRejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, rejoice.\u201d\n\nJoy and rejoice is the highest of praise. That\u2019s what motivates me\u2014gratitude\/gratitude for having a big life\u2014oh, it\u2019s been tough. He says, \u201cThanks for a big life.\u201d\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And you\u2019re thinking, \u201cI complain about the littlest things in my life.\u201d He went through such adversity; and yet, has a perspective of Psalm116: \u201cWhat can I render unto the Lord for all His benefits toward me?\u201d What a beautiful, inspiring way to live your day today!\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And a lot for all of us to learn about how we love one another, and care for one another, and fight for one another, and pursue justice in our world today.\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014in a godly and loving way.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There is a sin of partiality; the Bible talks about that. It is a sin to show partiality to one person over another person. Instead of bailing them out, John Perkins found himself in jail. He found himself meditating on the words of Scripture that said, \u201cDo not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.\u201d\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> That\u2019s what started happening to me when I was in the jail and was tortured. I saw evil in those white folks, and then I thought about God; I said, \u201cLord, if You let me out of this jail tonight, I\u2019d like to preach a gospel that could save us together.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, October 16<sup>th<\/sup>. Those folks who aren\u2019t familiar with the name, John Perkins, are going to get introduced to someone who has demonstrated for us\/modeled for us what it looks like to pursue racial harmony and racial reconciliation within the body of Christ.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Could there be a more appropriate topic at this time?\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I think we need a hero in these days.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Kim Anthony, who hosts FamilyLife\u2019s <em>Unfavorable Odds <\/em>podcast, which is part of the FamilyLife Podcast Network, had a chance to visit with Dr. Perkins recently. He lives in Mississippi, where he has lived most of his life. She, in her conversation with him, just spent time reviewing God\u2019s work in his life and helping all of us, I think, understand the realities of racial prejudice\u2014in the deep South, certainly, but throughout America\u2014and what it\u2019s been like for Dr. Perkins to live through this. He was born in 1930.\n\nWe\u2019re going to dive in; we\u2019ll hear a couple of segments. This first segment we\u2019re going to hear from Kim and Dr. Perkins just takes us through the early years of his life, growing up in rural Mississippi.\n\n[<em>Unfavorable Odds <\/em>Podcast]\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> Dr. Perkins, as of this interview, you have just celebrated your 90<sup>th<\/sup> birthday and your 70<sup>th<\/sup> wedding anniversary; congratulations.\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> Thank you; thank you. I\u2019m so grateful for spending this 70 years with Vera Mae; and every day, I weep in gratitude. How could I have been so lucky? God has been good. [Emotion in voice]\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> You\u2019ve seen a lot, and you\u2019ve been through a lot.\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> Yes, yes.\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> If you will, will you take me back in time to what your world looked like when you were born in rural Mississippi?\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> My mother died when I was seven months old. She died, and I lived. I was probably taking the milk that she needed for herself; I was probably draining that out. It\u2019s sort of like she sort of gave her life\u2014she died, and I lived. I think that\u2019s the greatest motivation; I\u2019m looking forward to that day when I see her face to face.\n\nHopefully, we could have a conversation, and I\u2019m excited about it. I want her to say, \u201cWell done\u201d; and I\u2019d probably take that for my 17 or so honorary doctorate\u2019s degrees. Got the\u2014sort of like the Academy Award of preaching\u2014Chuck Colson Award of all of that; Wilberforce Award for my lifetime work. She don\u2019t care nothing like about that. She going to ask me, \u201cWhat did I do for people like her?\u201d\n\nAfter she died, an old lady, lived down the street, saw me as a little skin and bones. She brought a quart of milk every day to my house. That milk saved my life; my mind was saved too. [Emotion in voice] That\u2019s another thing, because that milk saved my mind. I dropped out of school when I was somewhere about the third and fifth grade, but that was my early life.\n\nThe first thing I can remember in a house of\u2014we was bootleggers and gamblers\u2014that would be like a dope house today: a lot of children, lot of cousins born out of wedlock, and all of that in the community. My aunts didn\u2019t get married; but they had these babies, my cousins; and I love them dearly. The first thing I can remember\u2014we was probably playing in the house, all of us\u2014and I probably said, because they was calling their momma, \u201cMomma\u201d\u2014and I remember one of my aunts said, \u201cYour mother\u2019s dead.\u201d I felt totally <em>alone<\/em>.\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> Dr. Perkins came from a family of sharecroppers, which was <em>far<\/em> from lucrative to say the least.\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> The sharecropper\u2019s system was like just a step up from the slave system.\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> At a young age, Dr. Perkins would learn a hard reality about the economy and how it worked for black people in the South.\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> I became sort of an economist when I was a boy of about 11 years old. It was during World War II. I worked a day\/almost a full day for a white man, who asked me and the other guy to work. We thought we were going to get a dollar\/dollar-and-a-half for that day\u2019s work.\n\nBut at the back\u2014he had us to come through the kitchen; you couldn\u2019t come through the living room\u2014black folks had to go into the back kitchen door; go back out through the kitchen door. We came in the back kitchen and he paid us. He gave me a dime and a buffalo nickel. I was expecting to get about a dollar\/dollar-and-a-half for that day\u2019s work\u2014that\u2019s what it was going back there.\n\nI really wanted to throw that 15 cents on the ground. I hadn\u2019t accepted, \u201cYou were nothing, and they were something. They were the master, and you was their...\u201d I didn\u2019t fall for that; because I remember, when we were about two or three years old, the sheriff came to look for whiskey in our house. My grandmother said he must have brought it in there\u2014so he found a half a pint\u2014then he said he\u2019s going to take Grandma to jail. She said to the sheriff\/a white sheriff: \u201cAre you a fool?\u201d She said, \u201cYou think I\u2019m going to go to jail with <em>you<\/em> and leave these children here?\u201d My dignity was affirmed there, and I haven\u2019t lost it; thank God.\n\nNow, it\u2019s not many people grow up in that kind of environment\u2014because most people grow up in the back, trying to please the white man, because that was what they were supposed to be\u2014inferior. I grew up thinking that I was created in the image of God, and I didn\u2019t even know God.\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> His confidence in who he was did not match what was expected from a black person in the South during those times. Dr. Perkins\u2019 family would soon feel the need to send him out of state for his own safety. It all started after his brother, Clyde, came back from fighting in World War II. Clyde was talking with his girlfriend, waiting to see a movie.\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> In his own town, in the alley way of a little theater\u2014the blacks had to go up in the side so they could go upstairs, and the white folk went in the front door down there\u2014and the boys were just coming home from the service. That\u2019s a jubilant time!\u2014they\u2019d been gone about three or four years, fighting for the country.\n\nThen the police came up behind him, and hit him on the head, telling them black folks to be quiet. He turned around as a soldier: \u201cI was a soldier.\u201d When you become a soldier, you believe that you can whoop anybody with your hand; you don\u2019t need a gun. They hit him, and he turned around and grabbed a club. The policeman took the other hand and shot him in the stomach two times.\n\n[Studio]\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019ve been listening to a portion of an interview that Kim Anthony did with Dr. John Perkins recently\u2014a part of her podcast called <em>Unfavorable Odds, <\/em>which is part of the FamilyLife Podcast Network. Listening to Dr. Perkins share his story\/his brother\u2019s death at the hand of the police, you can understand where\u2014\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh, I mean, the heartbreak is real; but the anger and the bitterness that you would have to feel\u2014\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014even the rage.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014it\u2019s real.\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And how <em>unjust<\/em> it must have felt.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; and to not know Christ\u2014at that point, Dr. Perkins has not been converted\u2014when you experience that, all you know to do is fight back\/to want to harm the people who brought harm to you.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I mean, in some ways, that\u2019s the DNA of the human soul\u2014\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014revenge; you pay back. Anything less than that is not acceptable.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019re going to jump ahead. Dr. Perkins, in the \u201870s, was living again in Mississippi. There had been a group of students, who had been arrested for participation in a civil rights march. Dr. Perkins, who at this point, had come to faith in Christ, went to the jail in Brandon, Mississippi, to bail these protestors out of jail. He found the police were waiting for him.\n\n[<em>Unfavorable Odds <\/em>Podcast]\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> Dr. Perkins, I\u2019d like to take you back to the ambush in Brandon; because as I read that part of your story, it was so powerful for me. I have experienced racism, yes; but I did not have to go through what you and your team went through during that time. Would you take me back to that jailhouse and describe what it was like for you?\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> It looked like they might have tricked us into coming to the jail; because I would come up to make bond for them, and that\u2019s when they met us at the car and got us out of the car. They started beating us on the way to the jail; they started torturing me in that jailhouse. You know, I thought they were going to kill us.\n\nI remember when they stopped torturing us; because the FBI was supposed to be on their way and all of that. They stopped; then they made me wash up my blood from the floor; it was just blood everywhere. Then, when I got in that hall to go upstairs, there was two guys who hadn\u2019t beat us. Boy, they tried to beat us all the way up the steps. It was like I was going in and out of life; that was <em>torture<\/em>. It was then I said, \u201cOh, Lord, these are animals.\u201d\n\nIf I had a hand grenade, I would have pulled the plug. I would have been Samson\u2014all the students would have been killed; I\u2019d have been killed\u2014but all those white folks would have been killed too. It was then I saw that I was broken too. I saw myself as them\u2014my reaction in my heart\u2014I had the capability of killing them. Then that\u2019s when I said, \u201cGod, if You let me out of this jail tonight, I want to preach a gospel that could save us together. \u2018All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned\u2026\u2019\u201d\u2014and He going to say to Nicodemus\u2014\u201cHow can these things be?\u201d\u2014He said, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to be born again.\u201d You are born the first time with the Adam\u2019s spirit; you\u2019re born this time with God\u2019s Spirit.\n\nNicodemus was saying, \u201cHow can this be?\u201d He said, \u201cBecause God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believe on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. He sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He that believeth on Him is not condemned; he that believeth not is condemned already.\u201d\n\nI don\u2019t think we read those ideas that we\u2019ve got to be born again; we\u2019ve got to know God in a deeper way. You confess your sin, and you\u2019re just as like you\u2019ve never sinned. So now He\u2019ll invite you to this; but if you sin, and when you sin, you still have a Advocate with the Father. Oh, that\u2019s love! \u201cWhat kind of love is this?\u2014what kind of love is this that God would make us to be His children?\u201d John said that\u2019s who we are.\n\nIt hasn\u2019t been me hating white folks and getting them over their hate. It\u2019s the fact that they have been washing my wounds too. When I went in the hospital after that, there was white doctors and white nurses and black doctors and black nurses. They took care of me. I didn\u2019t want no white ones around me; they washed my wounds too. They out-loved me.\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> Do you think love is the key to reconciliation?\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> Love is the absolute; justice is number two. Justice comes out of God\u2019s love for us; He so loved us. Don\u2019t kill them;\u00a0 Black Lives Matter is: \u201cI can\u2019t breathe! I can\u2019t breathe! I can\u2019t breathe. You\u2019re killing me, getting life out of me.\u201d We need to get together\u2014white folk\/black folk\u2014Lord, have mercy!\n\nWe\u2019re at a crossroad. We\u2019ve got the greatest constitution on paper that ever been thought out. We hold these truths to be self-evident that all humankind was created equal to reflect God in that image; and now, what are we doing? We keep backing away from dignity\/an affirmation of that. This is a pivot time right now.\n\nI could ask Martin a question; he would always answer. When he came out of jail, beat up on the Pettus Bridge\u2014he would always answer the question: \u201cWhere do we go from here?\u201d\u2014\u201cIt ain\u2019t going to be the same. When dignity is affirmed, blacks got to love whites; whites got to love blacks. We\u2019ve got to love one another.\u201d\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> In your latest book, called <em>Dream with Me<\/em>, it seems like it\u2019s more of a call to action, which is what you\u2019re about; right?\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> It\u2019s a call to discipleship.\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> \u2014a call to discipleship. What do you see out there, as you tour the country\u2014before the COVID-19 crisis\u2014what did you see out there that gives you hope?\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> I think the multi-cultural churches was giving me the greatest hope. There\u2019s a group that\u2019s called the Mosaic\/there\u2019s a group that\u2019s called the Christian Community Development Association.\n\nNow, like #MeToo movement. I\u2019m so glad women are getting a chance; women have suffered a lot. Black women had to take the burden of us to save us. If I didn\u2019t have Vera Mae, who would I be with a third-grade education? But since I married a PhD English-type person\u2014without her what would I\u2019d have been?\u2014I\u2019m grateful.\n\nI\u2019m grateful for you; I\u2019m grateful for people who are thinking about these issues. We can make a better future, I think. Just like when trials come, that becomes an opportunity. The problem I can\u2019t solve, then I have to call on God; James says, \u201cCount it all joy\u2026\u201d\n\n<strong>Kim:<\/strong> Not only have you impacted this nation and this world with your work, but you\u2019ve impacted me and my family personally. I thank you that I had the honor of living a life that has been far different from yours, but having opportunities that I may not have had, had it not been for people like you.\n\n<strong>John:<\/strong> I want to thank you, girl. I want to thank you. You are my reward! You are my joy. That\u2019s what Paul says in Philippians\u2014He says, \u201cThe struggle we went through forming this church\u201d\u2014we\u2019re getting beat up in jail and all of that\u2014\u201cbut you\u2019re the first one who helped me. You have been with me.\u201d And he said, \u201cRejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, rejoice.\u201d\n\nJoy and rejoice is the highest of praise. That\u2019s what motivates me\u2014gratitude\/gratitude for having a big life\u2014oh, it\u2019s been tough. He says, \u201cThanks for a big life.\u201d\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And you\u2019re thinking, \u201cI complain about the littlest things in my life.\u201d He went through such adversity; and yet, has a perspective of Psalm116: \u201cWhat can I render unto the Lord for all His benefits toward me?\u201d What a beautiful, inspiring way to live your day today!\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And a lot for all of us to learn about how we love one another, and care for one another, and fight for one another, and pursue justice in our world today.\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014in a godly and loving way.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There is a sin of partiality; the Bible talks about that. It is a sin to show partiality to one person over another person.
