Have you ever done a ride along, where you\u2019re in the backseat of a police cruiser? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019ve been in the backseat\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014but not in a ride along. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wait; wait; wait. What?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> What do you mean, \u201cWhat?!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> When was this? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh, this was before we were married; but I spent a night\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t know that?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I did not know this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I think we put it in one of our books. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, your wife is looking like, \u201cI don\u2019t remember this!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I don\u2019t even know what you\u2019re talking about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> She didn\u2019t read that chapter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You spent a night in jail. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, I was going to spend the night. My mom came, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wait; wait. Get back to what happened. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You don\u2019t want to know. No; I mean, honestly, it was simply a 1970s craziness on a Friday night with my buddies\u2014I-75\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014before you were a believer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014before I was a believer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re 18\/19 years old? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I think I was 17\u2014probably a junior in high school\u2014drinking. We decided to moon the car beside us. I think I did; and you know, did the old moon shot. Next thing you know, the police [siren sound] are after us. We avoid; I mean, we turned into this town and start racing through it\u2014a little, tiny town\u2014and ended up in a car wash, thinking, \u201cOh, they\u2019ll never find us.\u201d They pull right up\u2014car in front; car in back\u2014get out, and they take us all to jail. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey, basically, said, \u201cYou\u2019re spending the night.\u201d Not only did we moon somebody, which\u2014I hate to say this on radio, as your FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> radio host, but then avoiding our arrest\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I don\u2019t know. Anyway, they allowed our parents to come. I had a single mom; she came. They let her take me home at 2\/3 a.m. I didn\u2019t end up spending the night; but man, did I get reamed out by my mom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is the good news\u2014I\u2019ve never mooned anybody since. [Laughter] Yes; that was my one night\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in the back of a police car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014in the back of a police car; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We have a police officer, Adam Davis, joining us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Former. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Former officer\u2014but Adam, welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Thank you so much, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I referred to you as officer because, if you had been behind a group of teenage boys, monkeying around like this\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Now, I\u2019ll tell you\u2014I never saw that happen. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Adam worked for six years in law enforcement and, since then, has been a writer\/a conference speaker. He has written books aimed at the guys in the profession that you were a part of. You have a heart for reaching police officers\/police officers\u2019 families; because you know that these are guys, who are not just on the frontline in terms of what they are experiencing in the culture, but they are in a spiritual battle field too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Oh, mercy! This\u2014everything that you see occurring in our physical world is a result of what\u2019s going on in the spirit world. There is a battle for <em>your<\/em> soul. You know the Word says, \u201cThe enemy comes to kill, steal, and destroy.\u201d We have laws against that in the natural; well, there is a law against that in the spirit. Jesus came to fulfill that law; He completely defeated him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I\u2019ve come to learn, through my interrogation of God, which humbled me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Tell that\u2014stop right there\u2014I mean, you mentioned it earlier. You interrogated God. Take us into that a little bit. I mean what was it like, interrogating a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Well, He never lied. [Laughter] Have you ever had a question that, maybe, just you\u2019d be frowned on if you <em>asked<\/em> in church? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u201cWhy do these things happen?\u201d I\u2019m not going to list them, because everybody\u2019s got their own <em>thing<\/em>. For me, interrogating Him\u2014I realized why cops are needed; because somewhere today a little girl or a little boy has been abused. They are hunkered down in a closet somewhere, and they are crying. They are afraid; they are hurt. They don\u2019t know what love feels like from a parent; and they are asking God to send somebody to them: \u201cSend me an angel. Help me get out of this.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe angel will come, and he is in the form\u2014in a man or a woman\u2014wearing a blue uniform, most of the time, with a badge; and he is going to come and take that baby away from there and put them in a home, where somebody will love them. It\u2019s our job, as the body of Christ, to equip those men and women with the love of Jesus, with His Word, and make sure we take care of them as part of the body. If we don\u2019t, we will be held accountable for that, because they are stewards of peace and law and order. We have to take care of our public servants. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor the little girl or the little boy, or the abused wife who maybe crying for an angel today, we have to invest in cops; because who better to send into broken situations than men and women, who\u2019ve been changed by the love of the living God?\u2014that\u2019s my passion. When you talk about reaching cops for Him, that\u2019s why; because it\u2019s not just cops we\u2019re touching. We\u2019re dispatching them into every community across the nation, and it can create a sweeping move of God\u2019s presence and change across a country that\u2019s dying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt starts\/I fully believe it can start within cops and within their marriages. We could see a change in our country. It may not look like we\u2019ve seen in the past, where churches are filled; but it could be where homes are filled with the love of God, and abuse has been remedied, and justice has been served for people who have created violent crimes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s one of the reasons why you see some of the things going on today\u2014is because we are on the brink of one of the biggest moves of God in American history. It starts within the life of a cop. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m thinking, in most police departments, there are maybe a handful of people, who are actually trying to live out their faith\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> It\u2019s hard. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in uniform. I\u2019m also thinking that their fellow officers might kind of look on them as\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014soft. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014yes; soft. Is that the case? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s how <em>I<\/em> felt. I felt like, if I listen to some southern gospel music on the radio in my patrol car, when the guy got in, who just beat somebody with a brick, that he is going to see me as soft\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u2014you know? Or that I\u2019m going to say, \u201cThey are having a bad day. Show them mercy, and let them go,\u201d\u2014no. That\u2019s the thing\u2014I developed this theory, through my own experience, that faith doesn\u2019t make you weak. It makes you unbeatable; because with Him, you are <em>never<\/em> defeated. You may face battles\u2014so I adopted the phrase, \u201c<em>Semper invictus<\/em>,\u201d\u2014which means \u201cAlways undefeated.\u201d It just sounds really cool\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I could just say, \u201cAlways undefeated.\u201d That\u2019s\/faith doesn\u2019t make you weak; it makes you unbeatable as long as your faith is in the right place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; I know that, Bob, as you asked that question\u2014and again, I don\u2019t make comparisons\u2014but it does seem similar, in some ways, to the NFL or to be a pro-athlete or an athlete. In the locker rooms, there was this same mentality. You give your life to Christ\u2014even head coaches would say\u2014\u201cOh, I just lost a great player. He\u2019s going to be <em>soft<\/em>. He\u2019s going to hit somebody on the field and say, \u2018Hey, are you okay?\u2019\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember, often, trying to help\u2014even head coaches, who sort of looked at me as a chaplain\u2014like, \u201cI don\u2019t know if I want my players spending a lot of time with you, because you\u2019re going to make them soft.\u201d One of my jobs was like, \u201cLet me tell you what an athlete should be like if he\u2019s a follower of Christ on the field.\u201d I always called it the three I\u2019s: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe should be the most <em>intense<\/em> player, not just game day, but in practice; because he\u2019s like, \u201cThis matters. I\u2019m not playing for head coach anymore or an owner; I\u2019m playing for the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave His life for me.\u201d So every time I\u2019m looking at film, every time I\u2019m taking a practice rep, I am a hundred percent in. I\u2019m there early; I\u2019m there late. Every head coach should go, \u201cI want everybody in my locker room to be like that guy.\u201d The Christian should model what it looks like. That\u2019s the first \u201cI.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second one is <em>integrity<\/em>\u2014that they should be the people you can take them at their word. Why?\u2014because they honor somebody bigger than the head coach. It\u2019s like, \u201cI\u2019m playing for\u201d\u2014so: \u201cIf I give him my word, it\u2019s going to be my bond.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You\u2019re going to be a man I can trust. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird was <em>intentionality<\/em>. Intentionality is like, \u201cI\u2019m playing for something more than just winning a game. I want people to see Christ, so I\u2019m intentional about how I work and then even how I handle an interview afterwards.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m thinking that\u2019s <em>exactly<\/em> the same thing in the police department. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Has to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014and in the military. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> I think that it is <em>our<\/em> responsibility. We have to look back and take responsibility, as the church\/as people. Whenever I talk to a brother, who is in law enforcement, or just a man struggling with his marriage\/his relationship with Christ, one of the first things I tell them is: \u201cLook at what you\u2019ve done. Face it. Now, it\u2019s already been paid for; let\u2019s move on. Now, here is what you are going to do, going forward. Stop making excuses; get a routine of discipline; take some self-control, and give it to God. Go and do the things that you\u2019re supposed to do every single day. Stop telling me what\u2019s wrong if you\u2019re not going to bring something to the table on what you\u2019re going to do to fix it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s time for the church to rise. It\u2019s time for men of God to rise up\u2014men who are armed with His Word, who know how to pray, who are willing to take a stand\u2014the nation needs you <em>now<\/em>. It needs every one of us <em>now<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did your fellow officers think that you had softened when you came to faith? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> You know, there were some that did; yes; absolutely. Some thought\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did they harass you? Did they\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Oh, of course! Yes; but that\u2019s part of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I mean, what did that sound like? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> I can\u2019t say it on Christian radio, Bob. [Laughter] No; but it was\u2014but that\u2019s part of it to an extent\u2014and you just have to be willing. I wasn\u2019t perfect; and I think that that\u2019s what we have to get to the point is: \u201cI\u2019m not perfect; I\u2019m going to mess up. I\u2019m going to fall at some point\u2014something\u2014I\u2019m going to mess up. Don\u2019t put that on me. There was only One perfect, and He\u2019s my best friend. I\u2019m trying\u201d; but I\u2019ve caught a lot of flak. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve caught a lot of questions from people, who said, \u201cWell, why did you leave law enforcement after only six years? Why didn\u2019t you retire?\u201d Frankly, there are only \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t24 hours in a day, and there is only so much I could do. What the vision I had, where I was at\u2014and it was a matter of calculated risk and <em>massive<\/em> faith\u2014I\u2019m going to tell you. I didn\u2019t know what was in front of me except for one step, and then I took that step in obedience\/in faith. God has honored every step of the way. That\u2019s how I got to Little Rock, Arkansas, today. [Laughter] It\u2019s one step of faith at a time, and I knew that it wouldn\u2019t be popular; but I would rather be known as faithful over famous. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> I want to honor Him. It\u2019s all about Him; He\u2019s the hero of my story, not me. He is the number-one hero. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Did you ever find guys in the department, or guys you worked with, that previously mocked you\/made fun of you?\u2014I mean, I saw it in the locker room\u2014like, \u201cDude, you don\u2019t drink anymore. You don\u2019t go to the strip clubs anymore. What happened to you? You\u2019re going home to your wife\u2014you loser!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Six months\/nine months later, that guy is going through something; and guess where he goes? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u201cBuddy,\u201d they call me to this point. It may not have always been the ones that I <em>worked<\/em> with\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u2014but I have had people that I worked with come to me\u2014and it\u2019s taken time. I\u2019ve had them drop by my house and say: \u201cHey, do you have a book?\u201d or \u201cDo you want to talk?\u201d or \u201c I\u2019ve got a question.\u201d They call me in <em>tears<\/em>. I talk to cops, across the country, that are in different stages of life with their marriage, or they are dealing with stuff, and they don\u2019t know how to. I\u2019m not a counselor; I\u2019m not a doctor. I\u2019m just a brother, who has been where you\u2019ve been in many cases. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUnderstanding how to navigate through that, and still keep yourself intact and not lose your faith\u2014not that it\u2019s something you have in a bag that can be lost\u2014but understanding that, no matter what happens today or tomorrow, that He is still God, and that He is always good no matter the circumstances\u2014and it is our responsibility to walk out and be the hands and feet of Christ in this world and to, literally, be the salt and the light. When we can go into these dark places like that, we\u2019re fulfilling what He\u2019s called us to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were there character issues that had to get worked out\/things that you might have done differently before you came to Christ? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> No; never did anything like that on the job\u2014ever. I had things I had to deal with within my marriage; but we dealt with that\u2014me and my wife and God and got some help. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Talk about that a little bit, too, for wives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Do we use tough love? What are the things that would be helpful? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> For me, it\u2019s giving me a safe place to address hard things. I don\u2019t need somebody else to tell me what I\u2019ve done wrong, or to criticize what I\u2019ve already done, or to question everything\/every decision I had to make in a microsecond that most people couldn\u2019t make in a <em>lifetime<\/em>. I want it to be a place to where she literally holds me in her arms and says, \u201cThere\u2019s <em>nothing<\/em> that you can say that\u2019s off-limits to me. I\u2019m your safe place.\u201d So if I\u2019ve got to rant, she\u2019s like, \u201cOkay\u201d; and she can toss it; she can discard it; she can handle it. But it\u2019s not always sitting down, and saying, \u201cHow was your day?\u201d \u201cFine,\u201d \u201cGreat,\u201d\u2014move on. That\u2019s <em>boring<\/em>; nobody wants a marriage like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHaving a man that\u2019s willing to stand up and say: \u201cMan, your hair looks great!\u201d [Laughter] or \u201cHey, don\u2019t worry about dishes; I\u2019ve got this\u201d\u2014just taking initiative or having the conversation\u2014it doesn\u2019t always have to be \u201cLet\u2019s sit down at the table, with the kids put away in bed; and we\u2019re going to sit here and stare at each other and talk about things.\u201d Man, make it interesting; it\u2019s a life. We were created to <em>thrive<\/em>; He came to give us life. Sometimes, it\u2019s been twisted out of context\u2014and more abundantly\u2014that\u2019s not always financial stuff; I don\u2019t think it means that at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe created us to <em>thrive<\/em> because, when we thrive in Him, we <em>crush<\/em> the enemy in this world. We\u2019re the <em>only<\/em> hope for this world when we walk in the purpose He\u2019s created us to walk in. There\u2019s a world that needs men and women, who are willing to have those conversations in the home, because there is a whole other generation coming behind; that if we don\u2019t <em>show<\/em> them how to do it, how are they going to know how to do it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And I think, Adam, what you said\u2014it\u2019s a great word\u2014\u201csafe place.\u201d If a spouse feels like his wife or her husband is a <em>safe place<\/em>, where I can be me and be affirmed and understood, then they are going to open up; but if it isn\u2019t\u2014like you said if it\u2019s critique\u2014they are going to shut down. I think that\u2019s what a man longs for\u2014and I\u2019m guessing that a wife does, too\u2014it\u2019s like, \u201cWow; I would run to that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cGee whiz; this is a place where I feel affirmed. I feel heard,\u201d\u2014whether it\u2019s \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t15 minutes on the couch, or 10 minutes before we go to bed, or whatever\u2014it\u2019s just, daily, a rhythm that \u201cThere is a place in my life that I\u2019m understood and I\u2019m affirmed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> So needed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m running there.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I would add one more tip, because I did this very poorly for so many years in our relationship\/in our marriage. Dave would come home, and I had all these expectations. Then when he didn\u2019t meet the expectations, I was critical; I was grumpy. I don\u2019t think it was a great safe place to come home to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would remind women, too, that a lot of men will bond, shoulder to shoulder. Even, I think I got <em>boring<\/em>\u2014we stopped playing; we stopped laughing; we stopped doing fun things\u2014because life is demanding: we have kids\/we have stress. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember Dave and I went out, not too long ago. He said, \u201cI\u2019m going to go play golf.\u201d I\u2019m not a golfer, but I just went to ride along in the cart. I remember he\u2019s getting ready to swing the club; and I just said, \u201cWow; you look good!\u201d [Laughter] He\u2019s laughing; but you know, it\u2019s just a little sentence\u2014that\u2019s it. It\u2019s <em>amazing<\/em> how just laughing together, admiring your spouse, and going somewhere\u2014where, I think the table, at first, can feel intimidating; you feel like you\u2019re going to be interrogated. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Yes; like you are sitting down with a principal or something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Exactly! But if you\u2019re having fun, and you\u2019re complimenting, and you\u2019re telling your spouse the good things that they\u2019ve done, that opens the door to create great conversation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019ll add one last thing. If you and your spouse decided: \u201cFor the next 90 days, we\u2019re going into a training program to make our marriage better.\u201d We do it all the time with our bodies\/with our diets\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014working out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201430 days\/60\/90 days. You pick up <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em>, which I did. I thought, \u201cWell, I might relate to it,\u201d\u2014 because it\u2019s not really written to\/I\u2019m not a police officer\u2014it relates to <em>anybody<\/em>, not just police officers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou start reading it; you\u2019re like, \u201cOh my goodness! If my wife and I did this for 90 days,\u201d\u2014I\u2019m guessing there is a guarantee on the end of that 90 days: \u201cYour marriage is going to be in a different place than it was on day 1.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> You\u2019re going to communicate better. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Great questions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> You\u2019re going to communicate better if you go through it and do the work every day for 90 days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, if most wives came to their husband and said, \u201cLet\u2019s do a devotional together,\u201d the husband\u2019s like, \u201cI don\u2019t want to do that.\u201d Bring them <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em>, and they are like, \u201cOkay; I\u2019ll look at this one.\u201d Each day takes\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014five minutes\/ten minutes to go through this? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Yes; absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What a <em>great<\/em> investment, written by a guy who understands what it\u2019s like on the frontlines of life and of marriage. I just think a guy would go, \u201cI\u2019m open to this. <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em> sounds like the kind of devotional I could go through.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> I\u2019ll tell guys this\u2014you may\/and I hope you do\u2014you may have a <em>great<\/em> marriage right now; but every once in a while, they start to get a <em>little<\/em> boring if you\u2019re not careful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014a little stale. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u2014a little stale. If you want to <em>immediately<\/em> put some of that pre-lit\/pre-soaked charcoal on your marriage, and throw a match on it, go home to your wife and say, \u201cBabe, let\u2019s do <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em> for 90 days.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cLet\u2019s do a devotional together.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u201cLet\u2019s do a devotional together.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u201cOooohhh!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> She might just give you the <em>look<\/em>\u2014just might! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u201cOh, it\u2019s on.\u201d [Laughter] I can\u2019t guarantee a lot of things, but things are going to go\u2014or she\u2019s going to say, \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Adam, I want to let listeners know how they can get <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em>. Before I do that, a lot of our listeners will be in a restaurant today or a coffee shop\/some place\u2014they are going to see a couple of people in uniform\/men and women\u2014and they are probably going to be the folks, who will go up to them and say, \u201cThank you for your service.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m sure that\u2019s meaningful, at some level, to an officer. Is there something else we could say\/something <em>better<\/em> we could say? How can we honor those who are serving us? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u201cThank you,\u201d goes a long way; but in a world that screams, \u201cI hate you,\u201d so loudly, I think we have to turn love up a notch. Whether you give them a copy of <em>Behind the Badge<\/em> or <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em>, or if you\u2019re in a restaurant and you buy their meal, or if you leave a note at the counter\u2014if you don\u2019t want to approach him\/if you don\u2019t feel comfortable approaching them\u2014you can buy their meal; leave them a note; write a Scripture out; give them something that is meaningful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThank you,\u201d is meaningful\u2014I\u2019m not devaluing that\u2014I\u2019m just saying, in a world where hate is being turned up at a level like it\u2019s never been turned up to before, I think we\u2019ve got to turn ours up a little bit louder. Let them know that we love them, and support them, and we\u2019re praying for them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Good word. Have you ever done a ride along, where you\u2019re in the backseat of a police cruiser? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019ve been in the backseat\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014but not in a ride along. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wait; wait; wait. What?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> What do you mean, \u201cWhat?!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> When was this? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh, this was before we were married; but I spent a night\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t know that?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I did not know this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I think we put it in one of our books. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, your wife is looking like, \u201cI don\u2019t remember this!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I don\u2019t even know what you\u2019re talking about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> She didn\u2019t read that chapter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You spent a night in jail. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, I was going to spend the night. My mom came, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wait; wait. Get back to what happened. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You don\u2019t want to know. No; I mean, honestly, it was simply a 1970s craziness on a Friday night with my buddies\u2014I-75\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014before you were a believer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014before I was a believer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re 18\/19 years old? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I think I was 17\u2014probably a junior in high school\u2014drinking. We decided to moon the car beside us. I think I did; and you know, did the old moon shot. Next thing you know, the police [siren sound] are after us. We avoid; I mean, we turned into this town and start racing through it\u2014a little, tiny town\u2014and ended up in a car wash, thinking, \u201cOh, they\u2019ll never find us.\u201d They pull right up\u2014car in front; car in back\u2014get out, and they take us all to jail. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey, basically, said, \u201cYou\u2019re spending the night.\u201d Not only did we moon somebody, which\u2014I hate to say this on radio, as your FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> radio host, but then avoiding our arrest\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I don\u2019t know. Anyway, they allowed our parents to come. I had a single mom; she came. They let her take me home at 2\/3 a.m. I didn\u2019t end up spending the night; but man, did I get reamed out by my mom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is the good news\u2014I\u2019ve never mooned anybody since. [Laughter] Yes; that was my one night\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in the back of a police car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014in the back of a police car; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We have a police officer, Adam Davis, joining us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Former. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Former officer\u2014but Adam, welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Thank you so much, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I referred to you as officer because, if you had been behind a group of teenage boys, monkeying around like this\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Now, I\u2019ll tell you\u2014I never saw that happen. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Adam worked for six years in law enforcement and, since then, has been a writer\/a conference speaker. He has written books aimed at the guys in the profession that you were a part of. You have a heart for reaching police officers\/police officers\u2019 families; because you know that these are guys, who are not just on the frontline in terms of what they are experiencing in the culture, but they are in a spiritual battle field too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Oh, mercy! This\u2014everything that you see occurring in our physical world is a result of what\u2019s going on in the spirit world. There is a battle for <em>your<\/em> soul. You know the Word says, \u201cThe enemy comes to kill, steal, and destroy.\u201d We have laws against that in the natural; well, there is a law against that in the spirit. Jesus came to fulfill that law; He completely defeated him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I\u2019ve come to learn, through my interrogation of God, which humbled me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Tell that\u2014stop right there\u2014I mean, you mentioned it earlier. You interrogated God. Take us into that a little bit. I mean what was it like, interrogating a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Well, He never lied. [Laughter] Have you ever had a question that, maybe, just you\u2019d be frowned on if you <em>asked<\/em> in church? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u201cWhy do these things happen?\u201d I\u2019m not going to list them, because everybody\u2019s got their own <em>thing<\/em>. For me, interrogating Him\u2014I realized why cops are needed; because somewhere today a little girl or a little boy has been abused. They are hunkered down in a closet somewhere, and they are crying. They are afraid; they are hurt. They don\u2019t know what love feels like from a parent; and they are asking God to send somebody to them: \u201cSend me an angel. Help me get out of this.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe angel will come, and he is in the form\u2014in a man or a woman\u2014wearing a blue uniform, most of the time, with a badge; and he is going to come and take that baby away from there and put them in a home, where somebody will love them. It\u2019s our job, as the body of Christ, to equip those men and women with the love of Jesus, with His Word, and make sure we take care of them as part of the body. If we don\u2019t, we will be held accountable for that, because they are stewards of peace and law and order. We have to take care of our public servants. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor the little girl or the little boy, or the abused wife who maybe crying for an angel today, we have to invest in cops; because who better to send into broken situations than men and women, who\u2019ve been changed by the love of the living God?\u2014that\u2019s my passion. When you talk about reaching cops for Him, that\u2019s why; because it\u2019s not just cops we\u2019re touching. We\u2019re dispatching them into every community across the nation, and it can create a sweeping move of God\u2019s presence and change across a country that\u2019s dying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt starts\/I fully believe it can start within cops and within their marriages. We could see a change in our country. It may not look like we\u2019ve seen in the past, where churches are filled; but it could be where homes are filled with the love of God, and abuse has been remedied, and justice has been served for people who have created violent crimes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s one of the reasons why you see some of the things going on today\u2014is because we are on the brink of one of the biggest moves of God in American history. It starts within the life of a cop. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m thinking, in most police departments, there are maybe a handful of people, who are actually trying to live out their faith\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> It\u2019s hard. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in uniform. I\u2019m also thinking that their fellow officers might kind of look on them as\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014soft. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014yes; soft. Is that the case? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s how <em>I<\/em> felt. I felt like, if I listen to some southern gospel music on the radio in my patrol car, when the guy got in, who just beat somebody with a brick, that he is going to see me as soft\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u2014you know? Or that I\u2019m going to say, \u201cThey are having a bad day. Show them mercy, and let them go,\u201d\u2014no. That\u2019s the thing\u2014I developed this theory, through my own experience, that faith doesn\u2019t make you weak. It makes you unbeatable; because with Him, you are <em>never<\/em> defeated. You may face battles\u2014so I adopted the phrase, \u201c<em>Semper invictus<\/em>,\u201d\u2014which means \u201cAlways undefeated.\u201d It just sounds really cool\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I could just say, \u201cAlways undefeated.\u201d That\u2019s\/faith doesn\u2019t make you weak; it makes you unbeatable as long as your faith is in the right place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; I know that, Bob, as you asked that question\u2014and again, I don\u2019t make comparisons\u2014but it does seem similar, in some ways, to the NFL or to be a pro-athlete or an athlete. In the locker rooms, there was this same mentality. You give your life to Christ\u2014even head coaches would say\u2014\u201cOh, I just lost a great player. He\u2019s going to be <em>soft<\/em>. He\u2019s going to hit somebody on the field and say, \u2018Hey, are you okay?\u2019\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember, often, trying to help\u2014even head coaches, who sort of looked at me as a chaplain\u2014like, \u201cI don\u2019t know if I want my players spending a lot of time with you, because you\u2019re going to make them soft.\u201d One of my jobs was like, \u201cLet me tell you what an athlete should be like if he\u2019s a follower of Christ on the field.\u201d I always called it the three I\u2019s: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe should be the most <em>intense<\/em> player, not just game day, but in practice; because he\u2019s like, \u201cThis matters. I\u2019m not playing for head coach anymore or an owner; I\u2019m playing for the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave His life for me.\u201d So every time I\u2019m looking at film, every time I\u2019m taking a practice rep, I am a hundred percent in. I\u2019m there early; I\u2019m there late. Every head coach should go, \u201cI want everybody in my locker room to be like that guy.\u201d The Christian should model what it looks like. That\u2019s the first \u201cI.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second one is <em>integrity<\/em>\u2014that they should be the people you can take them at their word. Why?\u2014because they honor somebody bigger than the head coach. It\u2019s like, \u201cI\u2019m playing for\u201d\u2014so: \u201cIf I give him my word, it\u2019s going to be my bond.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You\u2019re going to be a man I can trust. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird was <em>intentionality<\/em>. Intentionality is like, \u201cI\u2019m playing for something more than just winning a game. I want people to see Christ, so I\u2019m intentional about how I work and then even how I handle an interview afterwards.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m thinking that\u2019s <em>exactly<\/em> the same thing in the police department. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Has to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014and in the military. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> I think that it is <em>our<\/em> responsibility. We have to look back and take responsibility, as the church\/as people. Whenever I talk to a brother, who is in law enforcement, or just a man struggling with his marriage\/his relationship with Christ, one of the first things I tell them is: \u201cLook at what you\u2019ve done. Face it. Now, it\u2019s already been paid for; let\u2019s move on. Now, here is what you are going to do, going forward. Stop making excuses; get a routine of discipline; take some self-control, and give it to God. Go and do the things that you\u2019re supposed to do every single day. Stop telling me what\u2019s wrong if you\u2019re not going to bring something to the table on what you\u2019re going to do to fix it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s time for the church to rise. It\u2019s time for men of God to rise up\u2014men who are armed with His Word, who know how to pray, who are willing to take a stand\u2014the nation needs you <em>now<\/em>. It needs every one of us <em>now<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did your fellow officers think that you had softened when you came to faith? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> You know, there were some that did; yes; absolutely. Some thought\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did they harass you? Did they\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Oh, of course! Yes; but that\u2019s part of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I mean, what did that sound like? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> I can\u2019t say it on Christian radio, Bob. [Laughter] No; but it was\u2014but that\u2019s part of it to an extent\u2014and you just have to be willing. I wasn\u2019t perfect; and I think that that\u2019s what we have to get to the point is: \u201cI\u2019m not perfect; I\u2019m going to mess up. I\u2019m going to fall at some point\u2014something\u2014I\u2019m going to mess up. Don\u2019t put that on me. There was only One perfect, and He\u2019s my best friend. I\u2019m trying\u201d; but I\u2019ve caught a lot of flak. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve caught a lot of questions from people, who said, \u201cWell, why did you leave law enforcement after only six years? Why didn\u2019t you retire?\u201d Frankly, there are only \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t24 hours in a day, and there is only so much I could do. What the vision I had, where I was at\u2014and it was a matter of calculated risk and <em>massive<\/em> faith\u2014I\u2019m going to tell you. I didn\u2019t know what was in front of me except for one step, and then I took that step in obedience\/in faith. God has honored every step of the way. That\u2019s how I got to Little Rock, Arkansas, today. [Laughter] It\u2019s one step of faith at a time, and I knew that it wouldn\u2019t be popular; but I would rather be known as faithful over famous. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> I want to honor Him. It\u2019s all about Him; He\u2019s the hero of my story, not me. He is the number-one hero. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Did you ever find guys in the department, or guys you worked with, that previously mocked you\/made fun of you?\u2014I mean, I saw it in the locker room\u2014like, \u201cDude, you don\u2019t drink anymore. You don\u2019t go to the strip clubs anymore. What happened to you? You\u2019re going home to your wife\u2014you loser!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Six months\/nine months later, that guy is going through something; and guess where he goes? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u201cBuddy,\u201d they call me to this point. It may not have always been the ones that I <em>worked<\/em> with\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u2014but I have had people that I worked with come to me\u2014and it\u2019s taken time. I\u2019ve had them drop by my house and say: \u201cHey, do you have a book?\u201d or \u201cDo you want to talk?\u201d or \u201c I\u2019ve got a question.\u201d They call me in <em>tears<\/em>. I talk to cops, across the country, that are in different stages of life with their marriage, or they are dealing with stuff, and they don\u2019t know how to. I\u2019m not a counselor; I\u2019m not a doctor. I\u2019m just a brother, who has been where you\u2019ve been in many cases. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUnderstanding how to navigate through that, and still keep yourself intact and not lose your faith\u2014not that it\u2019s something you have in a bag that can be lost\u2014but understanding that, no matter what happens today or tomorrow, that He is still God, and that He is always good no matter the circumstances\u2014and it is our responsibility to walk out and be the hands and feet of Christ in this world and to, literally, be the salt and the light. When we can go into these dark places like that, we\u2019re fulfilling what He\u2019s called us to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were there character issues that had to get worked out\/things that you might have done differently before you came to Christ? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> No; never did anything like that on the job\u2014ever. I had things I had to deal with within my marriage; but we dealt with that\u2014me and my wife and God and got some help. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Talk about that a little bit, too, for wives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Do we use tough love? What are the things that would be helpful? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> For me, it\u2019s giving me a safe place to address hard things. I don\u2019t need somebody else to tell me what I\u2019ve done wrong, or to criticize what I\u2019ve already done, or to question everything\/every decision I had to make in a microsecond that most people couldn\u2019t make in a <em>lifetime<\/em>. I want it to be a place to where she literally holds me in her arms and says, \u201cThere\u2019s <em>nothing<\/em> that you can say that\u2019s off-limits to me. I\u2019m your safe place.\u201d So if I\u2019ve got to rant, she\u2019s like, \u201cOkay\u201d; and she can toss it; she can discard it; she can handle it. But it\u2019s not always sitting down, and saying, \u201cHow was your day?\u201d \u201cFine,\u201d \u201cGreat,\u201d\u2014move on. That\u2019s <em>boring<\/em>; nobody wants a marriage like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHaving a man that\u2019s willing to stand up and say: \u201cMan, your hair looks great!\u201d [Laughter] or \u201cHey, don\u2019t worry about dishes; I\u2019ve got this\u201d\u2014just taking initiative or having the conversation\u2014it doesn\u2019t always have to be \u201cLet\u2019s sit down at the table, with the kids put away in bed; and we\u2019re going to sit here and stare at each other and talk about things.\u201d Man, make it interesting; it\u2019s a life. We were created to <em>thrive<\/em>; He came to give us life. Sometimes, it\u2019s been twisted out of context\u2014and more abundantly\u2014that\u2019s not always financial stuff; I don\u2019t think it means that at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe created us to <em>thrive<\/em> because, when we thrive in Him, we <em>crush<\/em> the enemy in this world. We\u2019re the <em>only<\/em> hope for this world when we walk in the purpose He\u2019s created us to walk in. There\u2019s a world that needs men and women, who are willing to have those conversations in the home, because there is a whole other generation coming behind; that if we don\u2019t <em>show<\/em> them how to do it, how are they going to know how to do it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And I think, Adam, what you said\u2014it\u2019s a great word\u2014\u201csafe place.\u201d If a spouse feels like his wife or her husband is a <em>safe place<\/em>, where I can be me and be affirmed and understood, then they are going to open up; but if it isn\u2019t\u2014like you said if it\u2019s critique\u2014they are going to shut down. I think that\u2019s what a man longs for\u2014and I\u2019m guessing that a wife does, too\u2014it\u2019s like, \u201cWow; I would run to that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cGee whiz; this is a place where I feel affirmed. I feel heard,\u201d\u2014whether it\u2019s \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t15 minutes on the couch, or 10 minutes before we go to bed, or whatever\u2014it\u2019s just, daily, a rhythm that \u201cThere is a place in my life that I\u2019m understood and I\u2019m affirmed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> So needed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m running there.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I would add one more tip, because I did this very poorly for so many years in our relationship\/in our marriage. Dave would come home, and I had all these expectations. Then when he didn\u2019t meet the expectations, I was critical; I was grumpy. I don\u2019t think it was a great safe place to come home to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would remind women, too, that a lot of men will bond, shoulder to shoulder. Even, I think I got <em>boring<\/em>\u2014we stopped playing; we stopped laughing; we stopped doing fun things\u2014because life is demanding: we have kids\/we have stress. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember Dave and I went out, not too long ago. He said, \u201cI\u2019m going to go play golf.\u201d I\u2019m not a golfer, but I just went to ride along in the cart. I remember he\u2019s getting ready to swing the club; and I just said, \u201cWow; you look good!\u201d [Laughter] He\u2019s laughing; but you know, it\u2019s just a little sentence\u2014that\u2019s it. It\u2019s <em>amazing<\/em> how just laughing together, admiring your spouse, and going somewhere\u2014where, I think the table, at first, can feel intimidating; you feel like you\u2019re going to be interrogated. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Yes; like you are sitting down with a principal or something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Exactly! But if you\u2019re having fun, and you\u2019re complimenting, and you\u2019re telling your spouse the good things that they\u2019ve done, that opens the door to create great conversation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019ll add one last thing. If you and your spouse decided: \u201cFor the next 90 days, we\u2019re going into a training program to make our marriage better.\u201d We do it all the time with our bodies\/with our diets\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014working out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201430 days\/60\/90 days. You pick up <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em>, which I did. I thought, \u201cWell, I might relate to it,\u201d\u2014 because it\u2019s not really written to\/I\u2019m not a police officer\u2014it relates to <em>anybody<\/em>, not just police officers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou start reading it; you\u2019re like, \u201cOh my goodness! If my wife and I did this for 90 days,\u201d\u2014I\u2019m guessing there is a guarantee on the end of that 90 days: \u201cYour marriage is going to be in a different place than it was on day 1.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> You\u2019re going to communicate better. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Great questions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> You\u2019re going to communicate better if you go through it and do the work every day for 90 days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, if most wives came to their husband and said, \u201cLet\u2019s do a devotional together,\u201d the husband\u2019s like, \u201cI don\u2019t want to do that.\u201d Bring them <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em>, and they are like, \u201cOkay; I\u2019ll look at this one.\u201d Each day takes\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014five minutes\/ten minutes to go through this? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> Yes; absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What a <em>great<\/em> investment, written by a guy who understands what it\u2019s like on the frontlines of life and of marriage. I just think a guy would go, \u201cI\u2019m open to this. <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em> sounds like the kind of devotional I could go through.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> I\u2019ll tell guys this\u2014you may\/and I hope you do\u2014you may have a <em>great<\/em> marriage right now; but every once in a while, they start to get a <em>little<\/em> boring if you\u2019re not careful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014a little stale. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u2014a little stale. If you want to <em>immediately<\/em> put some of that pre-lit\/pre-soaked charcoal on your marriage, and throw a match on it, go home to your wife and say, \u201cBabe, let\u2019s do <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em> for 90 days.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cLet\u2019s do a devotional together.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u201cLet\u2019s do a devotional together.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u201cOooohhh!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> She might just give you the <em>look<\/em>\u2014just might! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u201cOh, it\u2019s on.\u201d [Laughter] I can\u2019t guarantee a lot of things, but things are going to go\u2014or she\u2019s going to say, \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Adam, I want to let listeners know how they can get <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em>. Before I do that, a lot of our listeners will be in a restaurant today or a coffee shop\/some place\u2014they are going to see a couple of people in uniform\/men and women\u2014and they are probably going to be the folks, who will go up to them and say, \u201cThank you for your service.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m sure that\u2019s meaningful, at some level, to an officer. Is there something else we could say\/something <em>better<\/em> we could say? How can we honor those who are serving us? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam:<\/strong> \u201cThank you,\u201d goes a long way; but in a world that screams, \u201cI hate you,\u201d so loudly, I think we have to turn love up a notch. Whether you give them a copy of <em>Behind the Badge<\/em> or <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em>, or if you\u2019re in a restaurant and you buy their meal, or if you leave a note at the counter\u2014if you don\u2019t want to approach him\/if you don\u2019t feel comfortable approaching them\u2014you can buy their meal; leave them a note; write a Scripture out; give them something that is meaningful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThank you,\u201d is meaningful\u2014I\u2019m not devaluing that\u2014I\u2019m just saying, in a world where hate is being turned up at a level like it\u2019s never been turned up to before, I think we\u2019ve got to turn ours up a little bit louder. Let them know that we love them, and support them, and we\u2019re praying for them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Good word.
