You think about high-risk professions\u2014I\u2019m not thinking about your life being on the line, although that can be the case\u2014I\u2019m thinking about your marriage and family being on the line. The more stress\/the more pressure you\u2019re under, the more your marriage is going to feel that and have to be a shock absorber for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>That would be marriage as a pastor\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s true. I mean, you know the statistics; and it is challenging.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>\u2014very high. Or honestly, marriage in the NFL\u201480 percent divorce rate\u2014but it\u2019s not dangerous like you\u2019re talking about; I mean, it\u2019s dangerous in a different way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut like putting your life on the line, that\u2019s another whole type of danger.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We want our listeners today to recognize there are people around us, serving us, who are in those high-risk situations and have chosen to be in those high-risk situations for our good. We have a friend who\u2019s joining us. Adam Davis is here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Adam, welcome.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Thank you so much for having me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Adam is an author; he is a conference speaker. The reason he is both an author and a conference speaker is because of what he did before he was an author and a conference speaker. How many years were you in law enforcement?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Six years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What led you into being a police officer?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>You know, if you ask a lot of people, they\u2019re going to say, \u201cI wanted to help people,\u201d and that\u2019s great; but really, I wanted to be like those good men that I saw\u2014a man named TJ, who\u2019s a retired sergeant\u2014I wanted to be a man of character like that. That was who I wanted to be, and I wanted my kids to look up to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Adam has written a number of devotionals, one called <em>On Spiritual Combat<\/em> for men and women in law enforcement and in military\/front-line military; <em>Behind the Badge<\/em> for police officers; and then, <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em> is the one that caught our attention, because of what it is that we do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know guys, whose marriages have suffered because of their career in law enforcement.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>I is one. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Talk a little about that. I mean, what was the stress on your marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>I wanted to find out, too: \u201cAdam, when you went into law enforcement, were you married; and how did your wife feel about it?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>She supported me 110 percent. Yes, we were married. We had been married, at the time, my goodness, nine years?\u2014about nine years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>You waited a <em>long<\/em> time to get married; right?\u2014came out of high school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Yes; we go to college, have a good set career\u2014no\u2014I got married at <em>18<\/em> years old; my wife had been 18 a month. We had a lot of people in our family, that were very close to us, said, \u201cI give it six months, and they\u2019ll be divorced.\u201d They weren\u2019t badly wrong\u2014I packed my bags about every week our first year. We were still growing up together; you know? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGot into law enforcement around nine years later; she supported me. But I changed; she didn\u2019t. She didn\u2019t ask for that; she didn\u2019t sign up for who I became.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>What do you mean you changed?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Yes, you become a little <em>hard<\/em> around the edges\u2014hard hearted. For example, you go to work\u2014and maybe your job is to write tickets all day, maybe your job is to work motor vehicle crashes, maybe your job is to run patrol, or you\u2019re an investigator\u2014with all of those things, there are inherent <em>stresses<\/em> that are going to occur. There are going to be some things on days that you don\u2019t want to relive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou go work at the bank, insurance office, hospital\u2014go home\u2014\u201cHow was your day?\u201d \u201cI had this guy come in and\u2026\u201d You want to talk about it most of the time. I got to the point I didn\u2019t want to relive what I\u2019d gone through. It took everything I had to make it home, and I didn\u2019t want to talk to her about it for a couple of reasons. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne, I didn\u2019t want to relive it; number two, I was exhausted; number three, I didn\u2019t want her to know about it; because I wanted to protect <em>her<\/em>. I didn\u2019t want her to see the world as I saw it: very evil, very vile, and a fallen world\u2014a lot of threats. When you\u2019re in law enforcement, you know things that are going on that are not made known to the general public all the time; and I wanted to protect my family. I didn\u2019t want them to have that stress and that worry on them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the end of the day, I\u2019d come home, take off my gear, sit down, stare at a blank TV\/stare at a blank wall. \u201cHow was your day, honey?\u201d \u201cFine,\u201d and wouldn\u2019t say anything else.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Did she push you a little bit? Did she feel that divide between you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Yes, I think so; and she\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Do you see what my wife\u2019s doing?\u2014she\u2019s doing it right now\u2014[Laughter]\u2014she\u2019s <em>pushing<\/em> you; she\u2019s getting <em>more<\/em>. This is my life! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>And you love it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>I\u2019ll tell you this\u2014she saw me fading. I forget at what point in my career it was\u2014maybe five years in\/four years in, whatever\u2014but towards the end\/it was a Friday\u2014I come home. She said, \u201cHey, Mom\u2019s keeping the kids. I have your bags packed. We\u2019re going out of town for the weekend, just me and you.\u201d She said, \u201cI know you need a break.\u201d She didn\u2019t have to do that. I mean, I\u2019m the sole income for the house. She works harder than I do, as a homeschool mom of three; but I\u2019m the sole income, and I knew that that took a lot for her to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe went; we stayed in a hotel; we had a nice dinner; we rode horses through the mountains in north Georgia. I realized in that moment that the woman that I had hurt, whether intentionally or because I was so hurt, still loved me. We talk a lot about the love of God, and we talk a lot about how He loves us\u2014we sing about it\/these beautiful songs. But until another human being has demonstrated that love and mirrored His love for us, like she did for me\u2014that\u2019s the love that changes you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Because it was unconditional?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Unrelenting\u2014did not matter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we still had rough spots and bumpy spells, but she essentially wrestled home back to the ground\/back to a normal guy, and she loved me through the storm. Sometimes that\u2019s what marriage is. Instead of saying\u2014\u201cHey, I have a rescue boat over here; I\u2019m out\u201d; and you go on your own way\u2014you ride the storm out together. I owe everything to her for that; because when I look at the love that she\u2019s shown me, I see the love of Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you grow up with a spiritual foundation in your life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>I grew up in a charismatic home. I was in church nine days a week. [Laughter] My stepdad was a pastor. I had this different idea of who God was, more so that He was sitting there with a leather belt, waiting on me to mess up so he could tear my hide up, or He was waiting to mash a button that I had to do good for Him to be good to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember signing my first membership card that said you could never go dance, you could never go to a movie theater, you couldn\u2019t listen to whatever\u2014I\u2019m like, \u201cOh. This is going to be really hard.\u201d [Laughter] That\u2019s not who God is, man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt took me becoming a law enforcement officer to discover that. Yes, I wasn\u2019t there an entire career; I started because I was going to retire\u2014I wanted to climb the ranks; I wanted to do everything. I don\u2019t have a lot of years on me, but I had a lot of miles on me; for six years, I did a lot of stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if the only purpose He had for me was to show me His love in that\u2014I\u2019ll never forget, in my roughest moments, feeling\u2014I never heard the audible voice of God, but I would feel the Holy Spirit bubbling inside of me, saying, \u201cThere\u2019s nothing you can do to change your love for Me,\u201d\u2014hugging a toilet, drunk as all get-out\u2014\u201cThere\u2019s nothing you can do to change My love for you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Take us back to that, Adam. What happened? You get into law enforcement, where your walk with God was not that dynamic\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Yes, it wasn\u2019t dynamic at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>You know, for me it was performance-based like I said. I think, when you fight for your life and you encounter evil on a very <em>real<\/em> level\u2014people that want to kill you, and kill your friends, and people that are hurting other people\u2014when you see these things that are going on in the world, it becomes a moment that you have sort of a fork in the road. You can just pretend like you didn\u2019t see it and keep going, or you can face it head-on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI faced it; and there was something here that was like, \u201cThis isn\u2019t right; this isn\u2019t right at all.\u201d Instead of just pretending like it didn\u2019t exist, and saying a sweet prayer and carrying on, I went to battle with it; and it was a battle inside of me. I never doubted that God <em>existed<\/em>; it was, \u201cIf You\u2019re good, then why? If You love me, then why?\u201d He was taking me through a place to where, eventually\u2014He had been showing me His love the whole time; I think that\u2019s the miracle of life\u2014if you just look, you\u2019ll see it\u2014but for me, I was so hard-headed\/I was so stubborn that I had to sit down and essentially interrogate Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started drinking; and that was sort of self-medicating, like we say, for the things that I dealt with. They teach you how to survive a fight. If somebody\u2019s trying to stab you or kill you, they teach you all the tactics and skills. But what I went through is not so much about that as much as it is how you respond <em>afterwards<\/em> and how you handle the trauma. How do you handle encountering these things, seeing death from different causes? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started self-medicating, and I drank; and I drank heavy. You know, it was never abusive; but I\u2019d be silent, completely withdrawn from my family. One of the things we talked about earlier\u2014I became a cop because I wanted my kids to be proud of me. When somebody said, \u201cWhat does your daddy do for a living?\u201d I wanted them to be able to blow their chests out and say, \u201cMy daddy\u2019s a police officer.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had been so withdrawn; I mean, you can\u2019t go to most of the ball games. Your birthday parties\u2014you\u2019re probably going to get called out. Christmas Day\u2014I\u2019ll never forget one Christmas Day, chasing cows through somebody\u2019s yard\u2014not the most violent thing I\u2019ve ever encountered; but the family that was sitting there, eating Christmas dinner, saw a uniformed police officer chasing cows; but I\u2019m still not with my family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are sacrifices that have to be made, and I was no longer willing to sacrifice my family. I\u2019m willing to lay down my life for you, but I\u2019m not willing to give my family life for you\u2014that\u2019s where it came\u2014so I started drinking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe lost some very good friends that I served with\u2014I had a wakeup call and started writing instead of drinking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>What do you mean you had a wakeup call?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>You can read about certain things: \u201cThat\u2019s sad,\u201d\u2014flip the page\u2014that\u2019s what we do as a society. We read a headline, flip the page or scroll; but when it\u2019s somebody that you know, and that you\u2019ve had a relationship with, it\u2019s different. We buried brothers that I served with for various causes; some inflicted, some not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut for me, my wakeup call was in a patrol car. You\u2019re not supposed to talk about this sort of thing; because if you talk about it, it shows a sign of weakness. I had gotten to a point where I was really, really tired in all facets\u2014I was tired emotionally; I was tired mentally; I was tired physically\u2014I saw no hope for my future; my marriage was on the rocks, mainly because of me. I had just pushed everybody in my life away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a Sunday\u2014working\u2014I was working overtime. Marked car, uniform, sitting in an old\u2014used to be gas station\u2014parking lot. That was the day I was going to take my life: \u201cI\u2019ve tried to do it all. I can\u2019t be good enough; I can\u2019t answer these things. I can\u2019t put two and two together and make sense anymore. I don\u2019t understand it; I don\u2019t have to understand it, but I believe in You for no other reason than I choose to believe, not because somebody else has persuaded me to\u201d; and there was a change.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, it wasn\u2019t an instant everything changed overnight, but the alcohol was gone\u2014I didn\u2019t desire it anymore. I wanted to do things differently, and I wanted pursue Him\u2014so writing and listening to where He was leading me, following that still, small voice\u2014and wanting other people to experience the same love that I felt in that car that day. You just don\u2019t really feel that love, as a cop, anymore. I know for a fact where that love came from\u2014Jesus was in that car with me\u2014it\u2019s because of Him that I\u2019m here today. I don\u2019t owe my life to anybody but Jesus; and I\u2019ve become a bondservant of love, and I want other people to know that there\u2019s hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you go home that Sunday and tell your wife what had happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Oh yes. What happened was\u2014I no longer saw it as, \u201cI have to do \u2018A\u2019, \u2018B,\u2019 and \u2018C\u2019 for Him to love me or to be a Christian.\u201d It became, \u201cOh my goodness, this love! I want to live in a way that shows Him how much I appreciate it, and I want to give that love back to Him. I want to live in a way that, when my life is done, that He says, \u2018Well done, thou good and faithful servant,\u2019 and that I was a good steward of it\u201d; because we\u2019ve all been given a measure of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you remember what Amber said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>I really don\u2019t. I think I was in a fog. She was grateful; she\u2019s been supportive ever since. She saw a change, and she\u2019ll tell you she saw a change.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What did she see?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>I became <em>softer<\/em>. I became her husband again, not just Officer Davis. I became a father to my children again. Gradually, over time\u2014it was probably a year after I left law enforcement\u2014that it really fell off; and she was like, \u201cIt\u2019s so good to have you back.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What did your fellow officers see?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>I\u2019ve had so many tell me how proud they were. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget one officer\u2014I\u2019m not going to say what his relationship was\u2014but he told me I\u2019d be better off to go kill myself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Explain that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Well, when you\u2019re no longer a part of what\u2019s going on\u2014and I wasn\u2019t partying anymore; I wasn\u2019t drinking anymore; I wasn\u2019t part of the clique anymore\u2014I wanted to go to work, do my job, and go home. That hurts, because he had no idea what I had been dealing with; he had no idea how close I was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHaving those conversations I think just drove me <em>harder<\/em> to go after God in that moment. Then to see my family and say, \u201cI can fight for this job that in 20 years\/25 years, whatever, I\u2019ll be forgotten when I walk out the door; I\u2019ll be another number. Or I can fight for my family.\u201d I just shifted the priorities to where they should have been the whole time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s okay to be a great cop and love your job, but don\u2019t forsake\u2014your wife or husband, your kids, your family\u2014the people that are going to be there for you when you hang up the badge.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Explain for listeners how consuming the law enforcement culture is for those who are in it. It\u2019s like: \u201cLife is here,\u201d\u2014and everything else, outside of that, is not secondary; it\u2019s third, fourth\u2014it\u2019s <em>way<\/em> down the line; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>I can\u2019t tell you how long of a time in there I had <em>zero<\/em> friends that were outside of law enforcement. That\u2019s okay for a period, but you need to have those friends that are outside. When I talk to men today, I tell them, \u201cYou need friends that are not in law enforcement.\u201d That\u2019s part of my assignment: \u201cYou need to find and develop friends outside of law enforcement.\u201d \u201cThey don\u2019t understand what I go through.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s okay; don\u2019t talk about it with them. Find something to talk about\u2014gardening, or golf, or the weather, or something. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it\u2019s <em>consuming<\/em>; because most of the time, you\u2019re working 12-hour shifts. Alright, so if you\u2019re going to work 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., you need to get up about 4:30 so you can be at briefing about 5:20\u2014so 4:30. Now, you\u2019re going to get home at 6, if you\u2019re lucky\/if you\u2019re lucky. Most of the time, you\u2019re going to catch a call right at 6:00; and you\u2019re going to have to work late. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour spouse is going to be preparing\u2014and you\u2019re going to go home; you\u2019re going to go eat\u2014or you\u2019re going to meet them somewhere and go out to eat\u2014you go, and you are still not present\/your body may be there, but you\u2019re not there\u2014because you\u2019re still thinking about if you have to do reports or you\u2019re thinking about stuff from the day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou work that; then you have court, and you may have court on your off days, when you\u2019d rather be with your family. Then, if you\u2019re going to go on vacation, you have to report that to your supervisor so they know you\u2019re out of town. It\u2019s completely consuming. It\u2019s a lifestyle\/it\u2019s a way of life. I\u2019m not apologetic; I\u2019m not sorry for it\u2014that\u2019s the way it is\u2014it\u2019s the law enforcement lifestyle.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut there has to be an injection of gospel\u2014of the Holy Spirit, of the Word of God in there, the love of Jesus\u2014that changes that up so it\u2019s a healthy lifestyle. We need men and women on the line, but there has to be a presence of God in there\u2014because if not, the burden is\u2014we try to carry it on our own, like I did. It will crush you; it will destroy everything about you if you try to carry it on your own. We were never created to do that. Take it and put it at His feet, and He\u2019ll give you strength.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Adam, how did you bring Jesus into your family? He\u2019s in you, you\u2019re taking Him with you in the workplace. How did the <em>look<\/em> of your family change?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>You know, it started just by, as silly as it sounds, sitting at church with my wife\u2014or this is unique\u2014grabbing her hand at night before bed in front of the kids and saying a prayer. It doesn\u2019t have to be complicated\/complex. When we become the authority in our home, under the authority of the Great Shepherd, that\u2019s the way it\u2019s supposed to be. Pray for her daily. It\u2019s <em>amazing<\/em> how the environment changes in your home. It\u2019s hard to remain mad at your spouse if you\u2019re holding hands and praying together. It was really simple steps.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI hate that I didn\u2019t document everything, but I really wasn\u2019t thinking about that at the point; but it\u2019s a good idea. That\u2019s what <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em> did\u2014was introduce praying with your spouse every day for 90 days\u2014it\u2019s opened up a lot of communication efforts between spouses that have been shut down for awhile.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I was thinking about your book, and I was thinking, in the city where I live there are a little more than 700 employees of the police department.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I thought, what if a local church\/a couple of local churches pitched in and said, \u201cLet\u2019s buy 700 copies of this book.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>That would be awesome.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Just make it as a gift to everybody who works for the police department. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat if, in every police force in America, people would buy the book and give it to police officers\/people on the police force with a note inside. Even have everybody\/somebody in the church just write a note, saying, \u201cPraying for you;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>\u201cAppreciate what you do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u201cThank you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cthank you for what you do. If I can ever help, here\u2019s my number.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Love it, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Give them a copy of that book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>We\u2019ve had a lot of churches do that and a lot of businesses do that with <em>Behind the Badge<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Obviously, about half are married; but it\u2019s written from a cop, who has a testimony for cops. If you talk to cops, who\u2019ve read it\u2014the ones, who were contemplating suicide, who God did something in their life; or the ones who were getting ready to\/they had already called the divorce lawyer and set the appointment; and they went through <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em> in 90 days, and God changed their lives\u2014it\u2019s laid out. You think about high-risk professions\u2014I\u2019m not thinking about your life being on the line, although that can be the case\u2014I\u2019m thinking about your marriage and family being on the line. The more stress\/the more pressure you\u2019re under, the more your marriage is going to feel that and have to be a shock absorber for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>That would be marriage as a pastor\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s true. I mean, you know the statistics; and it is challenging.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>\u2014very high. Or honestly, marriage in the NFL\u201480 percent divorce rate\u2014but it\u2019s not dangerous like you\u2019re talking about; I mean, it\u2019s dangerous in a different way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut like putting your life on the line, that\u2019s another whole type of danger.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We want our listeners today to recognize there are people around us, serving us, who are in those high-risk situations and have chosen to be in those high-risk situations for our good. We have a friend who\u2019s joining us. Adam Davis is here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Adam, welcome.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Thank you so much for having me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Adam is an author; he is a conference speaker. The reason he is both an author and a conference speaker is because of what he did before he was an author and a conference speaker. How many years were you in law enforcement?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Six years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What led you into being a police officer?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>You know, if you ask a lot of people, they\u2019re going to say, \u201cI wanted to help people,\u201d and that\u2019s great; but really, I wanted to be like those good men that I saw\u2014a man named TJ, who\u2019s a retired sergeant\u2014I wanted to be a man of character like that. That was who I wanted to be, and I wanted my kids to look up to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Adam has written a number of devotionals, one called <em>On Spiritual Combat<\/em> for men and women in law enforcement and in military\/front-line military; <em>Behind the Badge<\/em> for police officers; and then, <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em> is the one that caught our attention, because of what it is that we do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know guys, whose marriages have suffered because of their career in law enforcement.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>I is one. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Talk a little about that. I mean, what was the stress on your marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>I wanted to find out, too: \u201cAdam, when you went into law enforcement, were you married; and how did your wife feel about it?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>She supported me 110 percent. Yes, we were married. We had been married, at the time, my goodness, nine years?\u2014about nine years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>You waited a <em>long<\/em> time to get married; right?\u2014came out of high school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Yes; we go to college, have a good set career\u2014no\u2014I got married at <em>18<\/em> years old; my wife had been 18 a month. We had a lot of people in our family, that were very close to us, said, \u201cI give it six months, and they\u2019ll be divorced.\u201d They weren\u2019t badly wrong\u2014I packed my bags about every week our first year. We were still growing up together; you know? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGot into law enforcement around nine years later; she supported me. But I changed; she didn\u2019t. She didn\u2019t ask for that; she didn\u2019t sign up for who I became.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>What do you mean you changed?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Yes, you become a little <em>hard<\/em> around the edges\u2014hard hearted. For example, you go to work\u2014and maybe your job is to write tickets all day, maybe your job is to work motor vehicle crashes, maybe your job is to run patrol, or you\u2019re an investigator\u2014with all of those things, there are inherent <em>stresses<\/em> that are going to occur. There are going to be some things on days that you don\u2019t want to relive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou go work at the bank, insurance office, hospital\u2014go home\u2014\u201cHow was your day?\u201d \u201cI had this guy come in and\u2026\u201d You want to talk about it most of the time. I got to the point I didn\u2019t want to relive what I\u2019d gone through. It took everything I had to make it home, and I didn\u2019t want to talk to her about it for a couple of reasons. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne, I didn\u2019t want to relive it; number two, I was exhausted; number three, I didn\u2019t want her to know about it; because I wanted to protect <em>her<\/em>. I didn\u2019t want her to see the world as I saw it: very evil, very vile, and a fallen world\u2014a lot of threats. When you\u2019re in law enforcement, you know things that are going on that are not made known to the general public all the time; and I wanted to protect my family. I didn\u2019t want them to have that stress and that worry on them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the end of the day, I\u2019d come home, take off my gear, sit down, stare at a blank TV\/stare at a blank wall. \u201cHow was your day, honey?\u201d \u201cFine,\u201d and wouldn\u2019t say anything else.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Did she push you a little bit? Did she feel that divide between you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Yes, I think so; and she\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Do you see what my wife\u2019s doing?\u2014she\u2019s doing it right now\u2014[Laughter]\u2014she\u2019s <em>pushing<\/em> you; she\u2019s getting <em>more<\/em>. This is my life! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>And you love it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>I\u2019ll tell you this\u2014she saw me fading. I forget at what point in my career it was\u2014maybe five years in\/four years in, whatever\u2014but towards the end\/it was a Friday\u2014I come home. She said, \u201cHey, Mom\u2019s keeping the kids. I have your bags packed. We\u2019re going out of town for the weekend, just me and you.\u201d She said, \u201cI know you need a break.\u201d She didn\u2019t have to do that. I mean, I\u2019m the sole income for the house. She works harder than I do, as a homeschool mom of three; but I\u2019m the sole income, and I knew that that took a lot for her to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe went; we stayed in a hotel; we had a nice dinner; we rode horses through the mountains in north Georgia. I realized in that moment that the woman that I had hurt, whether intentionally or because I was so hurt, still loved me. We talk a lot about the love of God, and we talk a lot about how He loves us\u2014we sing about it\/these beautiful songs. But until another human being has demonstrated that love and mirrored His love for us, like she did for me\u2014that\u2019s the love that changes you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Because it was unconditional?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Unrelenting\u2014did not matter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we still had rough spots and bumpy spells, but she essentially wrestled home back to the ground\/back to a normal guy, and she loved me through the storm. Sometimes that\u2019s what marriage is. Instead of saying\u2014\u201cHey, I have a rescue boat over here; I\u2019m out\u201d; and you go on your own way\u2014you ride the storm out together. I owe everything to her for that; because when I look at the love that she\u2019s shown me, I see the love of Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you grow up with a spiritual foundation in your life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>I grew up in a charismatic home. I was in church nine days a week. [Laughter] My stepdad was a pastor. I had this different idea of who God was, more so that He was sitting there with a leather belt, waiting on me to mess up so he could tear my hide up, or He was waiting to mash a button that I had to do good for Him to be good to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember signing my first membership card that said you could never go dance, you could never go to a movie theater, you couldn\u2019t listen to whatever\u2014I\u2019m like, \u201cOh. This is going to be really hard.\u201d [Laughter] That\u2019s not who God is, man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt took me becoming a law enforcement officer to discover that. Yes, I wasn\u2019t there an entire career; I started because I was going to retire\u2014I wanted to climb the ranks; I wanted to do everything. I don\u2019t have a lot of years on me, but I had a lot of miles on me; for six years, I did a lot of stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if the only purpose He had for me was to show me His love in that\u2014I\u2019ll never forget, in my roughest moments, feeling\u2014I never heard the audible voice of God, but I would feel the Holy Spirit bubbling inside of me, saying, \u201cThere\u2019s nothing you can do to change your love for Me,\u201d\u2014hugging a toilet, drunk as all get-out\u2014\u201cThere\u2019s nothing you can do to change My love for you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Take us back to that, Adam. What happened? You get into law enforcement, where your walk with God was not that dynamic\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Yes, it wasn\u2019t dynamic at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>You know, for me it was performance-based like I said. I think, when you fight for your life and you encounter evil on a very <em>real<\/em> level\u2014people that want to kill you, and kill your friends, and people that are hurting other people\u2014when you see these things that are going on in the world, it becomes a moment that you have sort of a fork in the road. You can just pretend like you didn\u2019t see it and keep going, or you can face it head-on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI faced it; and there was something here that was like, \u201cThis isn\u2019t right; this isn\u2019t right at all.\u201d Instead of just pretending like it didn\u2019t exist, and saying a sweet prayer and carrying on, I went to battle with it; and it was a battle inside of me. I never doubted that God <em>existed<\/em>; it was, \u201cIf You\u2019re good, then why? If You love me, then why?\u201d He was taking me through a place to where, eventually\u2014He had been showing me His love the whole time; I think that\u2019s the miracle of life\u2014if you just look, you\u2019ll see it\u2014but for me, I was so hard-headed\/I was so stubborn that I had to sit down and essentially interrogate Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started drinking; and that was sort of self-medicating, like we say, for the things that I dealt with. They teach you how to survive a fight. If somebody\u2019s trying to stab you or kill you, they teach you all the tactics and skills. But what I went through is not so much about that as much as it is how you respond <em>afterwards<\/em> and how you handle the trauma. How do you handle encountering these things, seeing death from different causes? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started self-medicating, and I drank; and I drank heavy. You know, it was never abusive; but I\u2019d be silent, completely withdrawn from my family. One of the things we talked about earlier\u2014I became a cop because I wanted my kids to be proud of me. When somebody said, \u201cWhat does your daddy do for a living?\u201d I wanted them to be able to blow their chests out and say, \u201cMy daddy\u2019s a police officer.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had been so withdrawn; I mean, you can\u2019t go to most of the ball games. Your birthday parties\u2014you\u2019re probably going to get called out. Christmas Day\u2014I\u2019ll never forget one Christmas Day, chasing cows through somebody\u2019s yard\u2014not the most violent thing I\u2019ve ever encountered; but the family that was sitting there, eating Christmas dinner, saw a uniformed police officer chasing cows; but I\u2019m still not with my family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are sacrifices that have to be made, and I was no longer willing to sacrifice my family. I\u2019m willing to lay down my life for you, but I\u2019m not willing to give my family life for you\u2014that\u2019s where it came\u2014so I started drinking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe lost some very good friends that I served with\u2014I had a wakeup call and started writing instead of drinking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>What do you mean you had a wakeup call?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>You can read about certain things: \u201cThat\u2019s sad,\u201d\u2014flip the page\u2014that\u2019s what we do as a society. We read a headline, flip the page or scroll; but when it\u2019s somebody that you know, and that you\u2019ve had a relationship with, it\u2019s different. We buried brothers that I served with for various causes; some inflicted, some not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut for me, my wakeup call was in a patrol car. You\u2019re not supposed to talk about this sort of thing; because if you talk about it, it shows a sign of weakness. I had gotten to a point where I was really, really tired in all facets\u2014I was tired emotionally; I was tired mentally; I was tired physically\u2014I saw no hope for my future; my marriage was on the rocks, mainly because of me. I had just pushed everybody in my life away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a Sunday\u2014working\u2014I was working overtime. Marked car, uniform, sitting in an old\u2014used to be gas station\u2014parking lot. That was the day I was going to take my life: \u201cI\u2019ve tried to do it all. I can\u2019t be good enough; I can\u2019t answer these things. I can\u2019t put two and two together and make sense anymore. I don\u2019t understand it; I don\u2019t have to understand it, but I believe in You for no other reason than I choose to believe, not because somebody else has persuaded me to\u201d; and there was a change.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, it wasn\u2019t an instant everything changed overnight, but the alcohol was gone\u2014I didn\u2019t desire it anymore. I wanted to do things differently, and I wanted pursue Him\u2014so writing and listening to where He was leading me, following that still, small voice\u2014and wanting other people to experience the same love that I felt in that car that day. You just don\u2019t really feel that love, as a cop, anymore. I know for a fact where that love came from\u2014Jesus was in that car with me\u2014it\u2019s because of Him that I\u2019m here today. I don\u2019t owe my life to anybody but Jesus; and I\u2019ve become a bondservant of love, and I want other people to know that there\u2019s hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you go home that Sunday and tell your wife what had happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Oh yes. What happened was\u2014I no longer saw it as, \u201cI have to do \u2018A\u2019, \u2018B,\u2019 and \u2018C\u2019 for Him to love me or to be a Christian.\u201d It became, \u201cOh my goodness, this love! I want to live in a way that shows Him how much I appreciate it, and I want to give that love back to Him. I want to live in a way that, when my life is done, that He says, \u2018Well done, thou good and faithful servant,\u2019 and that I was a good steward of it\u201d; because we\u2019ve all been given a measure of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you remember what Amber said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>I really don\u2019t. I think I was in a fog. She was grateful; she\u2019s been supportive ever since. She saw a change, and she\u2019ll tell you she saw a change.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What did she see?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>I became <em>softer<\/em>. I became her husband again, not just Officer Davis. I became a father to my children again. Gradually, over time\u2014it was probably a year after I left law enforcement\u2014that it really fell off; and she was like, \u201cIt\u2019s so good to have you back.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What did your fellow officers see?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>I\u2019ve had so many tell me how proud they were. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget one officer\u2014I\u2019m not going to say what his relationship was\u2014but he told me I\u2019d be better off to go kill myself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Explain that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Well, when you\u2019re no longer a part of what\u2019s going on\u2014and I wasn\u2019t partying anymore; I wasn\u2019t drinking anymore; I wasn\u2019t part of the clique anymore\u2014I wanted to go to work, do my job, and go home. That hurts, because he had no idea what I had been dealing with; he had no idea how close I was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHaving those conversations I think just drove me <em>harder<\/em> to go after God in that moment. Then to see my family and say, \u201cI can fight for this job that in 20 years\/25 years, whatever, I\u2019ll be forgotten when I walk out the door; I\u2019ll be another number. Or I can fight for my family.\u201d I just shifted the priorities to where they should have been the whole time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s okay to be a great cop and love your job, but don\u2019t forsake\u2014your wife or husband, your kids, your family\u2014the people that are going to be there for you when you hang up the badge.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Explain for listeners how consuming the law enforcement culture is for those who are in it. It\u2019s like: \u201cLife is here,\u201d\u2014and everything else, outside of that, is not secondary; it\u2019s third, fourth\u2014it\u2019s <em>way<\/em> down the line; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>I can\u2019t tell you how long of a time in there I had <em>zero<\/em> friends that were outside of law enforcement. That\u2019s okay for a period, but you need to have those friends that are outside. When I talk to men today, I tell them, \u201cYou need friends that are not in law enforcement.\u201d That\u2019s part of my assignment: \u201cYou need to find and develop friends outside of law enforcement.\u201d \u201cThey don\u2019t understand what I go through.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s okay; don\u2019t talk about it with them. Find something to talk about\u2014gardening, or golf, or the weather, or something. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it\u2019s <em>consuming<\/em>; because most of the time, you\u2019re working 12-hour shifts. Alright, so if you\u2019re going to work 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., you need to get up about 4:30 so you can be at briefing about 5:20\u2014so 4:30. Now, you\u2019re going to get home at 6, if you\u2019re lucky\/if you\u2019re lucky. Most of the time, you\u2019re going to catch a call right at 6:00; and you\u2019re going to have to work late. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour spouse is going to be preparing\u2014and you\u2019re going to go home; you\u2019re going to go eat\u2014or you\u2019re going to meet them somewhere and go out to eat\u2014you go, and you are still not present\/your body may be there, but you\u2019re not there\u2014because you\u2019re still thinking about if you have to do reports or you\u2019re thinking about stuff from the day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou work that; then you have court, and you may have court on your off days, when you\u2019d rather be with your family. Then, if you\u2019re going to go on vacation, you have to report that to your supervisor so they know you\u2019re out of town. It\u2019s completely consuming. It\u2019s a lifestyle\/it\u2019s a way of life. I\u2019m not apologetic; I\u2019m not sorry for it\u2014that\u2019s the way it is\u2014it\u2019s the law enforcement lifestyle.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut there has to be an injection of gospel\u2014of the Holy Spirit, of the Word of God in there, the love of Jesus\u2014that changes that up so it\u2019s a healthy lifestyle. We need men and women on the line, but there has to be a presence of God in there\u2014because if not, the burden is\u2014we try to carry it on our own, like I did. It will crush you; it will destroy everything about you if you try to carry it on your own. We were never created to do that. Take it and put it at His feet, and He\u2019ll give you strength.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Adam, how did you bring Jesus into your family? He\u2019s in you, you\u2019re taking Him with you in the workplace. How did the <em>look<\/em> of your family change?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>You know, it started just by, as silly as it sounds, sitting at church with my wife\u2014or this is unique\u2014grabbing her hand at night before bed in front of the kids and saying a prayer. It doesn\u2019t have to be complicated\/complex. When we become the authority in our home, under the authority of the Great Shepherd, that\u2019s the way it\u2019s supposed to be. Pray for her daily. It\u2019s <em>amazing<\/em> how the environment changes in your home. It\u2019s hard to remain mad at your spouse if you\u2019re holding hands and praying together. It was really simple steps.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI hate that I didn\u2019t document everything, but I really wasn\u2019t thinking about that at the point; but it\u2019s a good idea. That\u2019s what <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em> did\u2014was introduce praying with your spouse every day for 90 days\u2014it\u2019s opened up a lot of communication efforts between spouses that have been shut down for awhile.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I was thinking about your book, and I was thinking, in the city where I live there are a little more than 700 employees of the police department.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I thought, what if a local church\/a couple of local churches pitched in and said, \u201cLet\u2019s buy 700 copies of this book.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>That would be awesome.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Just make it as a gift to everybody who works for the police department. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat if, in every police force in America, people would buy the book and give it to police officers\/people on the police force with a note inside. Even have everybody\/somebody in the church just write a note, saying, \u201cPraying for you;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>\u201cAppreciate what you do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u201cThank you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cthank you for what you do. If I can ever help, here\u2019s my number.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Love it, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Give them a copy of that book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>We\u2019ve had a lot of churches do that and a lot of businesses do that with <em>Behind the Badge<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Adam: <\/strong>Obviously, about half are married; but it\u2019s written from a cop, who has a testimony for cops. If you talk to cops, who\u2019ve read it\u2014the ones, who were contemplating suicide, who God did something in their life; or the ones who were getting ready to\/they had already called the divorce lawyer and set the appointment; and they went through <em>Bulletproof Marriage<\/em> in 90 days, and God changed their lives\u2014it\u2019s laid out. He used what I went through\u2014the mess\u2014and turned it into a beautiful gift, literally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve had a lot of churches across the country do that in all 50 states; I\u2019m so thankful for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>I mean, what a <em>great<\/em> idea.
