You see, when I was growing up, my dad knew how to provide for his family; he was good at that. He gave us things he never had, and he did a good job at that; but my dad didn\u2019t know how to be a spiritual leader. I never got to hear my dad pray; and that\u2019s one thing I\u2019ve always wondered: \u201cWhat would my dad have sounded like if I ever heard him pray?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Today, we\u2019re going to talk about overcoming spiritual poverty in some unique and surprising ways. Oh, and get your coffee cup ready\u2014you\u2019ll want it\u2014on this edition of <em>FamilyLife This Week<\/em>. Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWelcome to <em>FamilyLife This Week.<\/em> I\u2019m Michelle Hill. Have you ever stopped to consider the people who God is using to share His Word with others? You know, some of these people have pasts. Well, actually, everyone has a past\u2014I have a past and so do you\u2014but when God looks at us, He sees what He\u2019s done; and He sees what He\u2019s going to do through us. It\u2019s amazing when you stop and think about it; right?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou remember my friend, Tracy Lane\/her little daughter, Annie, who has a heart condition? Well, Tracy shared with me earlier this week how thrilling it is to live the life that God has given her to live. And it\u2019s been tough at times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, this got me to thinking about a man in the Bible, whom we all know, who basically, in some respects, wrote half of the New Testament. He was a man who built up the church; but before that, he did some other things. He was a persecutor of the church, and that made him an accessory to murder; and that\u2019s quite a past! Dennis Rainey recently spoke to a group of men; and he shared with them the story of this Hebrew of Hebrews from the line of Benjamin\u2014Saul of Tarsus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know what Saul did for a living? He held the jackets of the guys who stoned some of Christ\u2019s disciples, and one day Saul met Jesus Christ; He invaded his life, and Saul became Paul. He took a broken guy, who had helped with the murder of Christians. You know, he could never erase that image from his life! Jesus Christ gave him a mission, a purpose, a reason to live. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to tell you something, guys\u2014there is nothing you have done\/<em>nothing<\/em> you have done that can keep Almighty God from <em>loving<\/em> you, from redeeming you, and giving you, not only a spiritual address, but also a spiritual finish line for you to complete as you finish your life in here or as you finish your life out there. There\u2019s your spiritual address as a man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPaul said this\u2014this is the guy who was the accomplice\u2014he said [Philippians 3:14-14]: \u201cBrothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own, but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind\u2026\u201d Guys, I want you to hear me. There is an accuser\/an accuser who wants to remind you of what you\u2019ve done wrong. He wants to whisper in your ear, \u201cYou can never be used by God.\u201d That is a lie! [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCan you change what lies behind?\u2014no. Can you learn from what lies behind?\u2014of course, you can. Paul said, \u201c\u2026forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,\u201d\u2014listen to what he said\/he said\u2014\u201cI press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.\u201d Guys, the game is not over. It may be half-time; it may be the third quarter; you may feel like you\u2019re in the two-minute warning; but the question is, \u201cWill you redeem the opportunity to make a <em>huge<\/em> impact?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, guys, I spent a long time trying to come to grips with my doubts when, suddenly, I realized I had better come to grips with what I believe. I have since moved from the agony of questions I still can\u2019t answer to the reality of answers that I cannot escape; and it\u2019s a great relief. Amen. [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That was Dennis sharing a message with the men at Wrightsville Prison. He gave them a charge to move forward\u2014to become true men of God\/to lead their families well\u2014but most importantly, to not be defined by their past. After all, God doesn\u2019t define us by the past.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want you to hear from some of the men who were influenced by Dennis and his passion for biblical manhood. We took our microphone into the prison to talk with these men and to hear some of their stories.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Audio Recording]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cory:<\/strong> My name is Cory. I\u2019ve been incarcerated for three-and-a half years. It was nice to see that there are other men that struggle with the same exact things that I do on a daily basis. We have a gentleman in our group, who is not incarcerated, and a lot of the things that he shared were things that I struggle with on a daily basis. To see him, out there with a family\/with children\u2014to see him, going through these same struggles, to see these men come in here and share with us\u2014and then, also with the men in my group, who <em>are<\/em> incarcerated, to see these similar struggles\u2014but on top of that, teaching us how to deal with these struggles and how to cope with them\/how to get out of this bondage. It\u2019s nice to see that I\u2019m not in this fight alone. [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Daniel: <\/strong>My name is Daniel Button. I\u2019ve been here a little less than five years. I was really hard on my wife and my kids. What I didn\u2019t realize, until I got into this, was I was expecting my wife and my children to fill a hole that only God could fill. When they couldn\u2019t do it, I abandoned them; and I went chasing other things to try to fill that emptiness. See, they were never meant to fill that hole; but I expected them to, because I didn\u2019t understand love; I didn\u2019t understand God. I just understood that I was empty; I needed something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was looking for something to make me feel better about myself, and I learned that only God can do that. Something else that I\u2019ve noticed\u2014I tell people here at this unit a lot more about how much I miss and love my children than I told them when I was with them. I need to fix that; that\u2019s what I\u2019m going to work on. Thank y\u2019all for giving me the opportunity to do this. I appreciate it. [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>You know, those men have gained freedom. They may be incarcerated, physically, but there\u2019s freedom in Christ. That\u2019s really good news.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHey! I think I smell some coffee. Do you smell it? Well, okay, since I smell it, you\u2019re going to have to give me two minutes so that I can get a little bit of caffeine. When I come back, I\u2019m going to talk with a man who, like Dennis Rainey, is helping men realize their potential, post-incarceration. Pete Leonard joins me in the studio next. Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0[Radio Station Spot Break]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Welcome back to <em>FamilyLife This Week<\/em>. I'm Michelle Hill. Before the break, we heard a couple of men share what God is doing in their lives. Today, I am joined by Pete Leonard, who has a soft spot for men and women who are\/who have been in the prison system. Pete, when you heard a few of those stories, what was going through your mind?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Oh, that\u2019s very powerful. That was hearing from men who are still <em>in<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> I get to hear stories from men and women who are now <em>out<\/em>. It\u2019s stunning to me what God can do, regardless of our circumstances and regardless of our past. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> As you said, we <em>all<\/em> have a past.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Some of us should be incarcerated for the things that we did; we just weren\u2019t. But it doesn\u2019t matter; it\u2019s breaking God\u2019s Law that\u2019s the issue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHearing stories like that, of what God is doing in the hearts of men, which is <em>fantastic<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> \u2014is so encouraging that work is going on inside prisons. I know it is, because I know people who are doing that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Then to see what can happen when they get out and are given a chance to do something different to show that what happened to them in prison\u2014learning about Christ, becoming a believer, professing to follow Him\u2014can be carried out in public. That\u2019s a <em>huge<\/em> challenge. Life is different outside.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Oh, I\u2019m sure!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> The struggle that they have doing that needs a lot of help from <em>me<\/em>\/from the church to make it happen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> And you are providing some of that help. Pete Leonard is the founder and roast-manager of Second Chance Coffee Company, or is it the Second Chance Company?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> It\u2019s the Second Chance Coffee Company is how we\u2019re incorporated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Our brand is: I Have a Bean.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> I Have a Bean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> I Have a Bean.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Very unique name!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> It sounds like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Very fun name!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> \u2014it is a fun name, and it links right with Dr. King\u2019s \u201cI Have a Dream\u201d speech. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Okay, so your company is a little bit different than most coffee companies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Yes, probably a lot different. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Okay, a lot different. Setting up the business: \u201cWhy hire men and women who have just come out of prison?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Right; other people ask the question this way: \u201cAre you crazy?!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Well, I wasn\u2019t going to say that! I know you, and I know you aren\u2019t crazy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> At least, I don\u2019t <em>look<\/em> crazy! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay, so I used a phrase earlier, where I talked about: \u201cUnfortunately, society views people\u201d\u2014I used to be one of those people in society, viewing people, who had a felony conviction as being in the bottom one percent\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> \u2014\u201ca throwaway, a \u2018Forget about it,\u2019 a \u2018too bad\/so sad\u2019 kind of guy: \u2018You did it! You\u2019re responsible for the consequences, and that doesn\u2019t affect me.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, that was until a relative of mine went to prison. I watched what happened to his life when he got out of prison.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> And all of a sudden, it touched <em>you<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> It touched me; and at first, I was thinking: \u201cThat\u2019s really sad,\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s wrong,\u201d and \u201cSomebody should do something about that; somebody should do something about that.\u201d That persisted for a few months. I started having breakfast with a friend of mine, and it became clear that it wasn\u2019t \u201csomebody\u201d who should do something about that; that was <em>me<\/em> who should do something about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Well, tell me about one of your first employees. I\u2019d like to hear that story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> There are two that I want to talk about. One, my <em>very first <\/em>employee\u2014his name is James Short. Now, if he use his nickname, it\u2019s Jim Short. [Laughter] I know! I didn\u2019t realize that until just a few years ago, believe it or not. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Great nickname! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Yes! Anyway, James was a drug dealer in Chicago\u2014not a stand-on-the-corner drug dealer\u2014he calls himself a \u201chigh-price drug dealer.\u201d People would call him or page him, and he would deliver\/personally deliver to high rises, condos, and things in Chicago\u2014\u2014he\u2019s not one of the guys standing on the corner\u2014[he was] making big dollars. He got caught, and I don\u2019t remember how. He ended up in prison and spent nine or ten years in prison\u2014got out. What he realized he had was a passion and a talent for auto mechanics, believe it or not. It was tough for him to find work because of his conviction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we first started, we roasted a whopping 30 pounds of coffee a <em>month<\/em>; okay? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> It was a slow start!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Wow; was it slow. James would come in one day a week, and we would roast coffee in the morning on Friday. And then, Friday afternoon, we\u2019d hold Coffee 101 class, where I would try to teach James the little that I knew about coffee and coffee roasting. We discovered things together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFast forward a year later: James is working every day of the week; we\u2019re roasting coffee every day of the week. He has an opportunity to go work for a local energy company, on their trucks. We sent him off with great fanfare, and joy, and enthusiasm; he gets to do what he\u2019s been given talent to do by God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLewis\u2019s story is like this. I\u2019ll give you the very condensed version. Lewis grew up in a neighborhood that told young men: \u201cYou are not a man until you\u2019ve been to prison. You get no respect until you\u2019ve been to prison.\u201d And they made sure you didn\u2019t get it until you went to prison.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> So Lewis\u2019s <em>dream<\/em>, growing up, was, \u201cHow do I get to prison?\u201d He did everything he could to make sure that happened: he was into drugs and drug dealing, and guns, stealing, and shooting. The thing that got him into prison, finally, he ended up shooting a young man so many times that they couldn\u2019t even count the bullet holes in the kid that he shot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Now the kid did not die; if he had, Lewis would have been executed. The kid did not die; Lewis went to prison. Lewis was sentenced to three life terms, plus 100 years, while he was there. He sat down, and he was like, \u201cI wish I had a gun, so I could kill myself; because I don\u2019t want to be here the rest of my life.\u201d Then his second thought was, \u201cAnd I don\u2019t want to be beholden to anybody either.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, about that time, somebody walked up in an orange jumpsuit, and put a copy paper box at his feet on the floor; didn\u2019t say a word\u2014it was covered\u2014just turned around and walked away with a smile on their face. Lewis looked down at that box, and he watched that guy walk away. He says he used his toe and kicked the lid off that thing. In that box was: underwear, clean\/new socks, comb, Skittles<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. I guess, in prison, Skittles are like gold!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> I\u2019m sure they would be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> You can trade them for anything apparently\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I can\u2019t relate to that\u2014but [also] a toothbrush, toothpaste\u2014all of those things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Lewis looked at that stuff in the box, and what he said is, \u201cWhen I saw that, I knew I had to kill that guy.\u201d I looked at Lewis, and I said, \u201cWhat?!\u201d Because I would\u2019ve been thinking, \u201cThanks!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> And he\u2019s thinking, \u201cNope! What I saw in that box was a gift I could not repay, and what I knew he was trying to do me was get me in debt to him.\u201d He determined in his heart that night he was going to kill that guy. He got his hands ready in this kind of choke-hold look. He turned and jumped through the sheet\/pushed it aside, and he was ready to lunge at this guy. He stopped halfway through; because in the room wasn\u2019t just this guy\u2014there were two other guys\u2014they were sitting around a little lamp, reading the Bible. They kept on reading; they didn\u2019t even look up. They just kept on reading this passage in Matthew, I think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen they stopped, this guy that he was intending to kill, just kind of looks up at him, and gives him a sideways glance, and says, \u201cLewis, do you believe in Jesus?\u201d Lewis was like, \u201cNo, man! I believe in evolution,\u201d\u2014[Laughter]\u2014that\u2019s what he has told me he said. He is still standing there, with his hands ready to strangle this guy; but he didn\u2019t know what to do. The guy reached in the back of his Bible, pulled out a tract. It had the Four Spiritual Laws\u2014I think it was a Four Spiritual Laws\u2014in it, at the back of it, was the prayer of salvation. He handed it to Lewis\/said, \u201cRead that, and let\u2019s talk tomorrow.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLewis says he took it with one hand, with his other hand still in the \u201cI\u2019m going to kill you,\u201d clamp\/ death clamp\u201d; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> He took that; and he backed up out of the room, ashamed of the fact that he couldn\u2019t carry through with what he had planned. He walked back to his bunk; he sat down on it; and opened up that tract, and read it front to back. What he said is, \u201cIn that tract was a phrase.\u201d I\u2019ll paraphrase this a little bit\u2014something to do with having a clean slate\u2014that\u2019s something that Christ could do for you: \u201cGive you a clean slate.\u201d He said, \u201cThat\u2019s what I need\u2014is a clean slate\u201d; so he prayed the prayer in the back\u2014the prayer of salvation that was written there. Then he added this at the end, \u201cBut God, if You ain\u2019t real, I ain\u2019t following You. You gotta prove to me that You\u2019re real. The minute you prove to me You ain\u2019t real, we\u2019re done\/I\u2019m done with You.\u201d Then he laid down on his bunk and went to sleep. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe woke up; the warden walked over and said, \u201cOkay, I\u2019ve got your cell assignment.\u201d He assigned him to a room. He walked him into a cell; and he said, \u201cStaring at me was the biggest baddest-looking guy I have <em>ever<\/em> seen; scared me to death!\u201d I thought, \u201cThis guy\u2019s going to snap me in half like a twig.\u201d The warden introduced him, and the [warden] left. This guy, all of a sudden, got this <em>big <\/em>smile on his face. He stuck out this big hand of a hand and shook Lewis\u2019s hand. He said, \u201cLewis! Welcome to my cell!\u201d He opened up a drawer in a little nightstand that he had; and he said, \u201cHere\u2019s your Bible,\u201d and handed him a Gideon New Testament. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey started\u2014[choked up with tears]\u2014when I tell this story, I just picture myself in that room with Lewis. The care that somebody in prison, who <em>is <\/em>incarcerated, who is there with a life sentence\u2014and Lewis, <em>three<\/em> life sentences plus 100 years!\u2014they start discipling each other. Lewis had such a life change in that prison, because of what God did, that he was let go in 15-and-a-half years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> The parole board came to the prison and said, \u201cWe\u2019re letting Lewis out.\u201d They told that to the warden. The warden came to Lewis and said, \u2018Lewis\u201d\u2014now this is how long this stuff takes\u2014\u201cin three-and-a-half years, you\u2019re getting out.\u201d Lewis was like, \u201cDon\u2019t mess with me! [Laughter] Don\u2019t mess with me!\u201d He thought he was getting a joke played on him. The warden said, \u201cNo, it\u2019s real; it\u2019s gonna happen.\u201d \u201cOkay; we\u2019ll see!\u201d Three-and-a-half years later, Lewis is released from prison. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI met him four months after that. This is where Lewis is in his journey: after coming to I Have a Bean and roasting for me for a year, he came to me and said, \u201cPete, I hate coffee. I love you; I love this company. Can I be in sales?\u201d \u201cWell, okay!\u201d Then we put Lewis on the street, selling coffee. He came to me, after doing this for two years\u2014or maybe two-and-a-half\u2014he said, \u201cPete, I hate coffee. I love you; I love this company, but God\u2019s calling me to the next thing.\u201d Today, Lewis is the head of Set Free Prison Ministries in Illinois\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> \u2014doing Bible studies, back in the prison system. He\u2019s married\u2014got kids, got a house\u2014and all that stuff. He is a <em>great <\/em>friend\/a <em>true<\/em> man of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust because somebody\u2019s in trouble right now does not mean that they aren\u2019t going to be the next Paul from Saul. Lewis is that person, and I have got 40 more stories like that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> \u2014like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> \u2014of people that we work with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That\u2019s incredible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> It\u2019s stunning!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> And to hear Lewis\u2019s story\u2014the transformation. You just mentioned Paul. That\u2019s where my mind was going the entire time you were sharing that story\u2014was Paul\u2014and just how God grabbed him and was like, \u201cYou\u2019re My man, and this is what I\u2019m going to do with you. I\u2019m going to let My light shine <em>through <\/em>you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019ve got plans for you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019ve got plans for you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That\u2019s incredible!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Yes, and what does it take? It takes people\u2014it takes the church, frankly\u2014letting God do that work. If we <em>really <\/em>believe in redemption, then we need to be the ones, being God\u2019s hands and feet, making that happen. That\u2019s why I do what I do. I <em>love<\/em> coffee, and I <em>love<\/em> seeing God transform people\u2019s lives; this is the thing I get to do!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That\u2019s exciting. Well, thank you so much for joining me today, Pete. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Oh, you\u2019re quite welcome.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> This has been a delight, and I\u2019m so excited to try some of this coffee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> See, I know\/I smell it over there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> I\u2019ve heard it\u2019s really, really good! You see, when I was growing up, my dad knew how to provide for his family; he was good at that. He gave us things he never had, and he did a good job at that; but my dad didn\u2019t know how to be a spiritual leader. I never got to hear my dad pray; and that\u2019s one thing I\u2019ve always wondered: \u201cWhat would my dad have sounded like if I ever heard him pray?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Today, we\u2019re going to talk about overcoming spiritual poverty in some unique and surprising ways. Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWelcome to <em>FamilyLife This Week.<\/em> I\u2019m Michelle Hill. Have you ever stopped to consider the people who God is using to share His Word with others? You know, some of these people have pasts. Well, actually, everyone has a past\u2014I have a past and so do you\u2014but when God looks at us, He sees what He\u2019s done; and He sees what He\u2019s going to do through us. It\u2019s amazing when you stop and think about it; right?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou remember my friend, Tracy Lane\/her little daughter, Annie, who has a heart condition? Well, Tracy shared with me earlier this week how thrilling it is to live the life that God has given her to live. And it\u2019s been tough at times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, this got me to thinking about a man in the Bible, whom we all know, who basically, in some respects, wrote half of the New Testament. He was a man who built up the church; but before that, he did some other things. He was a persecutor of the church, and that made him an accessory to murder; and that\u2019s quite a past! Dennis Rainey recently spoke to a group of men; and he shared with them the story of this Hebrew of Hebrews from the line of Benjamin\u2014Saul of Tarsus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know what Saul did for a living? He held the jackets of the guys who stoned some of Christ\u2019s disciples, and one day Saul met Jesus Christ; He invaded his life, and Saul became Paul. He took a broken guy, who had helped with the murder of Christians. You know, he could never erase that image from his life! Jesus Christ gave him a mission, a purpose, a reason to live. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to tell you something, guys\u2014there is nothing you have done\/<em>nothing<\/em> you have done that can keep Almighty God from <em>loving<\/em> you, from redeeming you, and giving you, not only a spiritual address, but also a spiritual finish line for you to complete as you finish your life in here or as you finish your life out there. There\u2019s your spiritual address as a man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPaul said this\u2014this is the guy who was the accomplice\u2014he said [Philippians 3:14-14]: \u201cBrothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own, but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind\u2026\u201d Guys, I want you to hear me. There is an accuser\/an accuser who wants to remind you of what you\u2019ve done wrong. He wants to whisper in your ear, \u201cYou can never be used by God.\u201d That is a lie! [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCan you change what lies behind?\u2014no. Can you learn from what lies behind?\u2014of course, you can. Paul said, \u201c\u2026forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,\u201d\u2014listen to what he said\/he said\u2014\u201cI press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.\u201d Guys, the game is not over. It may be half-time; it may be the third quarter; you may feel like you\u2019re in the two-minute warning; but the question is, \u201cWill you redeem the opportunity to make a <em>huge<\/em> impact?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, guys, I spent a long time trying to come to grips with my doubts when, suddenly, I realized I had better come to grips with what I believe. I have since moved from the agony of questions I still can\u2019t answer to the reality of answers that I cannot escape; and it\u2019s a great relief. Amen. [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That was Dennis sharing a message with the men at Wrightsville Prison. He gave them a charge to move forward\u2014to become true men of God\/to lead their families well\u2014but most importantly, to not be defined by their past. After all, God doesn\u2019t define us by the past.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want you to hear from some of the men who were influenced by Dennis and his passion for biblical manhood. We took our microphone into the prison to talk with these men and to hear some of their stories.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Audio Recording]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cory:<\/strong> My name is Cory. I\u2019ve been incarcerated for three-and-a half years. It was nice to see that there are other men that struggle with the same exact things that I do on a daily basis. We have a gentleman in our group, who is not incarcerated, and a lot of the things that he shared were things that I struggle with on a daily basis. To see him, out there with a family\/with children\u2014to see him, going through these same struggles, to see these men come in here and share with us\u2014and then, also with the men in my group, who <em>are<\/em> incarcerated, to see these similar struggles\u2014but on top of that, teaching us how to deal with these struggles and how to cope with them\/how to get out of this bondage. It\u2019s nice to see that I\u2019m not in this fight alone. [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Daniel: <\/strong>My name is Daniel Button. I\u2019ve been here a little less than five years. I was really hard on my wife and my kids. What I didn\u2019t realize, until I got into this, was I was expecting my wife and my children to fill a hole that only God could fill. When they couldn\u2019t do it, I abandoned them; and I went chasing other things to try to fill that emptiness. See, they were never meant to fill that hole; but I expected them to, because I didn\u2019t understand love; I didn\u2019t understand God. I just understood that I was empty; I needed something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was looking for something to make me feel better about myself, and I learned that only God can do that. Something else that I\u2019ve noticed\u2014I tell people here at this unit a lot more about how much I miss and love my children than I told them when I was with them. I need to fix that; that\u2019s what I\u2019m going to work on. Thank y\u2019all for giving me the opportunity to do this. I appreciate it. I'm Michelle Hill. Before the break, we heard a couple of men share what God is doing in their lives. Today, I am joined by Pete Leonard, who has a soft spot for men and women who are\/who have been in the prison system. Pete, when you heard a few of those stories, what was going through your mind?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Oh, that\u2019s very powerful. That was hearing from men who are still <em>in<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> I get to hear stories from men and women who are now <em>out<\/em>. It\u2019s stunning to me what God can do, regardless of our circumstances and regardless of our past. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> As you said, we <em>all<\/em> have a past.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Some of us should be incarcerated for the things that we did; we just weren\u2019t. But it doesn\u2019t matter; it\u2019s breaking God\u2019s Law that\u2019s the issue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHearing stories like that, of what God is doing in the hearts of men, which is <em>fantastic<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> \u2014is so encouraging that work is going on inside prisons. I know it is, because I know people who are doing that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Then to see what can happen when they get out and are given a chance to do something different to show that what happened to them in prison\u2014learning about Christ, becoming a believer, professing to follow Him\u2014can be carried out in public. That\u2019s a <em>huge<\/em> challenge. Life is different outside.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Oh, I\u2019m sure!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> The struggle that they have doing that needs a lot of help from <em>me<\/em>\/from the church to make it happen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> And you are providing some of that help. Pete Leonard is the founder and roast-manager of Second Chance Coffee Company, or is it the Second Chance Company?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> It\u2019s the Second Chance Coffee Company is how we\u2019re incorporated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Our brand is: I Have a Bean.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> I Have a Bean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> I Have a Bean.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Very unique name!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> It sounds like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Very fun name!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> \u2014it is a fun name, and it links right with Dr. King\u2019s \u201cI Have a Dream\u201d speech. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Okay, so your company is a little bit different than most coffee companies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Yes, probably a lot different. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Okay, a lot different. Setting up the business: \u201cWhy hire men and women who have just come out of prison?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Right; other people ask the question this way: \u201cAre you crazy?!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Well, I wasn\u2019t going to say that! I know you, and I know you aren\u2019t crazy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> At least, I don\u2019t <em>look<\/em> crazy! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay, so I used a phrase earlier, where I talked about: \u201cUnfortunately, society views people\u201d\u2014I used to be one of those people in society, viewing people, who had a felony conviction as being in the bottom one percent\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> \u2014\u201ca throwaway, a \u2018Forget about it,\u2019 a \u2018too bad\/so sad\u2019 kind of guy: \u2018You did it! You\u2019re responsible for the consequences, and that doesn\u2019t affect me.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, that was until a relative of mine went to prison. I watched what happened to his life when he got out of prison.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> And all of a sudden, it touched <em>you<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> It touched me; and at first, I was thinking: \u201cThat\u2019s really sad,\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s wrong,\u201d and \u201cSomebody should do something about that; somebody should do something about that.\u201d That persisted for a few months. I started having breakfast with a friend of mine, and it became clear that it wasn\u2019t \u201csomebody\u201d who should do something about that; that was <em>me<\/em> who should do something about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Well, tell me about one of your first employees. I\u2019d like to hear that story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> There are two that I want to talk about. One, my <em>very first <\/em>employee\u2014his name is James Short. Now, if he use his nickname, it\u2019s Jim Short. [Laughter] I know! I didn\u2019t realize that until just a few years ago, believe it or not. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Great nickname! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Yes! Anyway, James was a drug dealer in Chicago\u2014not a stand-on-the-corner drug dealer\u2014he calls himself a \u201chigh-price drug dealer.\u201d People would call him or page him, and he would deliver\/personally deliver to high rises, condos, and things in Chicago\u2014\u2014he\u2019s not one of the guys standing on the corner\u2014[he was] making big dollars. He got caught, and I don\u2019t remember how. He ended up in prison and spent nine or ten years in prison\u2014got out. What he realized he had was a passion and a talent for auto mechanics, believe it or not. It was tough for him to find work because of his conviction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we first started, we roasted a whopping 30 pounds of coffee a <em>month<\/em>; okay? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> It was a slow start!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Wow; was it slow. James would come in one day a week, and we would roast coffee in the morning on Friday. And then, Friday afternoon, we\u2019d hold Coffee 101 class, where I would try to teach James the little that I knew about coffee and coffee roasting. We discovered things together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFast forward a year later: James is working every day of the week; we\u2019re roasting coffee every day of the week. He has an opportunity to go work for a local energy company, on their trucks. We sent him off with great fanfare, and joy, and enthusiasm; he gets to do what he\u2019s been given talent to do by God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLewis\u2019s story is like this. I\u2019ll give you the very condensed version. Lewis grew up in a neighborhood that told young men: \u201cYou are not a man until you\u2019ve been to prison. You get no respect until you\u2019ve been to prison.\u201d And they made sure you didn\u2019t get it until you went to prison.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> So Lewis\u2019s <em>dream<\/em>, growing up, was, \u201cHow do I get to prison?\u201d He did everything he could to make sure that happened: he was into drugs and drug dealing, and guns, stealing, and shooting. The thing that got him into prison, finally, he ended up shooting a young man so many times that they couldn\u2019t even count the bullet holes in the kid that he shot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Now the kid did not die; if he had, Lewis would have been executed. The kid did not die; Lewis went to prison. Lewis was sentenced to three life terms, plus 100 years, while he was there. He sat down, and he was like, \u201cI wish I had a gun, so I could kill myself; because I don\u2019t want to be here the rest of my life.\u201d Then his second thought was, \u201cAnd I don\u2019t want to be beholden to anybody either.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, about that time, somebody walked up in an orange jumpsuit, and put a copy paper box at his feet on the floor; didn\u2019t say a word\u2014it was covered\u2014just turned around and walked away with a smile on their face. Lewis looked down at that box, and he watched that guy walk away. He says he used his toe and kicked the lid off that thing. In that box was: underwear, clean\/new socks, comb, Skittles<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. I guess, in prison, Skittles are like gold!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> I\u2019m sure they would be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> You can trade them for anything apparently\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I can\u2019t relate to that\u2014but [also] a toothbrush, toothpaste\u2014all of those things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Lewis looked at that stuff in the box, and what he said is, \u201cWhen I saw that, I knew I had to kill that guy.\u201d I looked at Lewis, and I said, \u201cWhat?!\u201d Because I would\u2019ve been thinking, \u201cThanks!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> And he\u2019s thinking, \u201cNope! What I saw in that box was a gift I could not repay, and what I knew he was trying to do me was get me in debt to him.\u201d He determined in his heart that night he was going to kill that guy. He got his hands ready in this kind of choke-hold look. He turned and jumped through the sheet\/pushed it aside, and he was ready to lunge at this guy. He stopped halfway through; because in the room wasn\u2019t just this guy\u2014there were two other guys\u2014they were sitting around a little lamp, reading the Bible. They kept on reading; they didn\u2019t even look up. They just kept on reading this passage in Matthew, I think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen they stopped, this guy that he was intending to kill, just kind of looks up at him, and gives him a sideways glance, and says, \u201cLewis, do you believe in Jesus?\u201d Lewis was like, \u201cNo, man! I believe in evolution,\u201d\u2014[Laughter]\u2014that\u2019s what he has told me he said. He is still standing there, with his hands ready to strangle this guy; but he didn\u2019t know what to do. The guy reached in the back of his Bible, pulled out a tract. It had the Four Spiritual Laws\u2014I think it was a Four Spiritual Laws\u2014in it, at the back of it, was the prayer of salvation. He handed it to Lewis\/said, \u201cRead that, and let\u2019s talk tomorrow.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLewis says he took it with one hand, with his other hand still in the \u201cI\u2019m going to kill you,\u201d clamp\/ death clamp\u201d; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> He took that; and he backed up out of the room, ashamed of the fact that he couldn\u2019t carry through with what he had planned. He walked back to his bunk; he sat down on it; and opened up that tract, and read it front to back. What he said is, \u201cIn that tract was a phrase.\u201d I\u2019ll paraphrase this a little bit\u2014something to do with having a clean slate\u2014that\u2019s something that Christ could do for you: \u201cGive you a clean slate.\u201d He said, \u201cThat\u2019s what I need\u2014is a clean slate\u201d; so he prayed the prayer in the back\u2014the prayer of salvation that was written there. Then he added this at the end, \u201cBut God, if You ain\u2019t real, I ain\u2019t following You. You gotta prove to me that You\u2019re real. The minute you prove to me You ain\u2019t real, we\u2019re done\/I\u2019m done with You.\u201d Then he laid down on his bunk and went to sleep. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe woke up; the warden walked over and said, \u201cOkay, I\u2019ve got your cell assignment.\u201d He assigned him to a room. He walked him into a cell; and he said, \u201cStaring at me was the biggest baddest-looking guy I have <em>ever<\/em> seen; scared me to death!\u201d I thought, \u201cThis guy\u2019s going to snap me in half like a twig.\u201d The warden introduced him, and the [warden] left. This guy, all of a sudden, got this <em>big <\/em>smile on his face. He stuck out this big hand of a hand and shook Lewis\u2019s hand. He said, \u201cLewis! Welcome to my cell!\u201d He opened up a drawer in a little nightstand that he had; and he said, \u201cHere\u2019s your Bible,\u201d and handed him a Gideon New Testament. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey started\u2014[choked up with tears]\u2014when I tell this story, I just picture myself in that room with Lewis. The care that somebody in prison, who <em>is <\/em>incarcerated, who is there with a life sentence\u2014and Lewis, <em>three<\/em> life sentences plus 100 years!\u2014they start discipling each other. Lewis had such a life change in that prison, because of what God did, that he was let go in 15-and-a-half years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> The parole board came to the prison and said, \u201cWe\u2019re letting Lewis out.\u201d They told that to the warden. The warden came to Lewis and said, \u2018Lewis\u201d\u2014now this is how long this stuff takes\u2014\u201cin three-and-a-half years, you\u2019re getting out.\u201d Lewis was like, \u201cDon\u2019t mess with me! [Laughter] Don\u2019t mess with me!\u201d He thought he was getting a joke played on him. The warden said, \u201cNo, it\u2019s real; it\u2019s gonna happen.\u201d \u201cOkay; we\u2019ll see!\u201d Three-and-a-half years later, Lewis is released from prison. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI met him four months after that. This is where Lewis is in his journey: after coming to I Have a Bean and roasting for me for a year, he came to me and said, \u201cPete, I hate coffee. I love you; I love this company. Can I be in sales?\u201d \u201cWell, okay!\u201d Then we put Lewis on the street, selling coffee. He came to me, after doing this for two years\u2014or maybe two-and-a-half\u2014he said, \u201cPete, I hate coffee. I love you; I love this company, but God\u2019s calling me to the next thing.\u201d Today, Lewis is the head of Set Free Prison Ministries in Illinois\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> \u2014doing Bible studies, back in the prison system. He\u2019s married\u2014got kids, got a house\u2014and all that stuff. He is a <em>great <\/em>friend\/a <em>true<\/em> man of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust because somebody\u2019s in trouble right now does not mean that they aren\u2019t going to be the next Paul from Saul. Lewis is that person, and I have got 40 more stories like that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> \u2014like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> \u2014of people that we work with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That\u2019s incredible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> It\u2019s stunning!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> And to hear Lewis\u2019s story\u2014the transformation. You just mentioned Paul. That\u2019s where my mind was going the entire time you were sharing that story\u2014was Paul\u2014and just how God grabbed him and was like, \u201cYou\u2019re My man, and this is what I\u2019m going to do with you. I\u2019m going to let My light shine <em>through <\/em>you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019ve got plans for you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019ve got plans for you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That\u2019s incredible!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Yes, and what does it take? It takes people\u2014it takes the church, frankly\u2014letting God do that work. If we <em>really <\/em>believe in redemption, then we need to be the ones, being God\u2019s hands and feet, making that happen. That\u2019s why I do what I do. I <em>love<\/em> coffee, and I <em>love<\/em> seeing God transform people\u2019s lives; this is the thing I get to do!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> That\u2019s exciting. Well, thank you so much for joining me today, Pete. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> Oh, you\u2019re quite welcome.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> This has been a delight, and I\u2019m so excited to try some of this coffee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> See, I know\/I smell it over there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> I\u2019ve heard it\u2019s really, really good! [Laughter] Thank you very much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Pete:<\/strong> You\u2019re welcome. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong> How would you react if someone killed a person you loved?
