You\u2019ve told them the promises of God will be with them in the midst of that, and you prepared them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I\u2019m thinking, at the end of the day, when they come home, and you say, \u201cDid you have a chance to be courageous today? Were you afraid?\u201d You have those conversations as a follow up; and they see, \u201cThis is not just something that\u2019s abstract. This is something that applies to what I\u2019m living.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Yes; and that\u2019s where we continue on with the Deuteronomy 6, where it says, \u201cEngage with them when you are sitting down, when you are lying down, when you wake up.\u201d We\u2019re living it out: you start in the morning with it; you discuss it at dinner or near bedtime; and it becomes the conversation of the week. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re not trying to get kids to memorize these verses every day; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> But in reading them out loud, and reading slowly with the kids, you\u2019re helping them understand, \u201cGod\u2019s Word is real; it\u2019s practical; it makes sense; it applies to my life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s funny. Somewhere in your book\u2014I don\u2019t remember where\u2014wasn\u2019t there a story about Carter with a bully? Talk about being strong and courageous. Tell that; it\u2019s pretty cute. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Remember, my son is only in kindergarten this past year. We have been trying to help them understand that not everyone in their public school knows about Jesus, let alone wants to follow Jesus. We need to have compassion on them, but we want to share Jesus with others. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe saw a bully in the playground. He went up to him and he said\u2014as an evangelist, I have to work on his approach\u2014but he said, \u201cDo you believe in Jesus?\u201d The bully said, \u201cYes.\u201d Carter looked at him, surprised, and says, \u201cWell then why don\u2019t you act more like Him?\u201d [Laughter] Because He understands, \u201cIf we do believe in Jesus, there is an expectation that we become more like Him,\u201d\u2014already, at age six. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He didn\u2019t get punched for saying that; did he? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> He didn\u2019t! No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> He just came home a little confused. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> But he\u2019s being strong and courageous. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Most people run from bullies, and they don\u2019t speak at all. There he is\u2014living it out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It\u2019s funny, because kids get excited about sharing Jesus. I remember I would share the story\u2014even at the dinner table sometimes\u2014about Adam and Eve and the fall, and the serpent and Satan, and our need for Jesus of coming to redeem and connect us back with God. They love this story so much, they ask me to repeat it all the time; because it really becomes, then, you keep taking it into the gospel. Their friends would come over, who were like ten years old\u2014like, \u201cMom, tell the Garden story,\u201d\u2014you know, they want me to share the gospel. These kids are like into it, which is\/we assume that they won\u2019t be; but they really become that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCan you give us\u2014like what are the other themes each day for courage? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Sure; Monday was \u201cDo not be afraid.\u201d Tuesday is \u201cPut your hope in God\u201d; Wednesday, \u201cYour work will be rewarded\u201d; Thursday, \u201cBe courageous to obey God\u201d; and Friday, \u201cBe courageous in waiting.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have to think Joshua is in there somewhere; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Yes; there is\u2014two Joshua\u2019s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Because I hear, \u201cBe strong and courageous\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and I think, \u201cHave I not commanded you, be strong and courageous?\u201d In fact, when our kids were growing up, there was a song\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes! It\u2019s\u2014I was just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014[Singing] \u201cHave I not commanded you be strong and courageous!\u201d\u2014right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014[Singing] \u201cbe strong and courageous!\u201d What was that from? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Me neither; but we must have listened to the same thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> That sounds like an <em>old<\/em> movie\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No; it\u2019s like either\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014the way you guys sang it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014Psalty the Singing Songbook or\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was one of those. Having some of these verses put to music, I\u2019m thinking about Seeds Family Worship, which we talked about earlier. I\u2019m thinking about all of the different\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Do you know what my wife does now, Bob? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh no!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What does she do? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> She downloaded all the Seeds Family Worship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Every time we walk anywhere, she starts singing verses. She\u2014those really work. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> To have verses to music\u2014this is what makes the Scripture stick in your heart. That\u2019s why I can still remember Joshua 1, years later, because I got the melody in my head along with the words. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Right; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you use Scripture memory songs as a part of this rotation with your family? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> We didn\u2019t do Scripture memory songs. We do use Psalty, like you mentioned. We do have\u2014they listen to Psalty to memorize; but we actually used this idea of memorizing verses A through Z. They would learn a verse that starts with A, learn a verse that starts with B, all the way down to Z. They started doing that when they were three, and they wouldn\u2019t understand the verses; but again, it\u2019s hiding the Word in their heart that they will remember for the rest of their lives\u2014just like you did with that song. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> I do think, just like with your grandson, it\u2019s important to get memorization in, not worry about them always understanding it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> That doesn\u2019t guarantee that they will walk with Jesus the rest of their life; but it does give them an opportunity for the Holy Spirit or for God to just bring that verse back up in a time of need in their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> What about dads? Is there anything?\u2014is there a role for men\/for the dad? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Okay; okay. [Laughter] I\u2019ll just crawl away to the corner; no. Have you seen anything?\u2014is there any way that men can do this or dads could do this? Does it only have to be moms? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> No; in fact, my whole book\u2014I, on purpose, tried not to make the front to look flowery. I, on purpose, did not say, \u201cMoms,\u201d anywhere in my book; because I think it could be dads; it could be moms <em>and<\/em> dads; it could be taking turns. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014which would be even better. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Yes; so nowhere do I emphasize this is a mom manual; it\u2019s a parent manual. I think it\u2019s something\u2014great\u2014I think, if there is only one parent available in the morning, it should be that parent\u2014whoever it is. Then, in the evening, the following parent could follow up; they could ask the questions: \u201cSo what did you learn?\u201d \u201cWhat was your verse today?\u201d \u201cWhat were you praying about?\u201d They could be a learner of the kids so the child could then share what they\u2019ve experienced that day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You know, one of the things we did, when the kids were real little\u2014I don\u2019t know how long we did it\u2014but I would take them\/we called it, \u201cBoys Day Out,\u201d just to give Ann a break; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know if I did it once a month\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014once a month. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014or every couple of weeks. We had this ritual of going to a video game mall and getting A&amp;W<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> root beer. Listening to this right now, it\u2019s like, \u201cThat would have been an opportunity, at least, to take one of these and spend the day, doing my part.\u201d Again, it wouldn\u2019t be just once a month; but it\u2019s a way\u2014if we had had this back then\u2014I would have said, \u201cOkay, Friday is my day,\u201d or \u201cMonday is my day. I\u2019m driving them to school; I\u2019m going to take them through.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m looking at Week 5: \u201cComparison and Jealousy.\u201d That never happens; people never compare or get jealous\u2014[Laughter]\u2014that never ends\u2014but to be able to walk them through truth from the Scripture and to be involved with Ann. I mean, that\u2019s an opportunity for men to jump in. Has your husband done anything in that way? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019m the morning person; so he picks up the kids, and I take the kids. Because we both drive though, he does ask them, as he picks them up: \u201cHow was your day? What did you learn today? How were you in seeing the people around you?\u201d He asks discipleship questions on the drive home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt might not be exactly always related to our prayer in the morning; but the other thing we\u2019ve put into our day\u2014that our children <em>demand<\/em> from my husband\u2014is we do five minutes with them before they go to bed too. We start the day\u2014one of us\u2014with this prayer; but both of us\u2014now, we only have two kids; so if you have like eight kids, this might be a little harder\u2014but we each spend five minutes with each of them, which could end up being ten or more\u2014but every night, they want five minutes <em>alone<\/em> with each parent. That five minutes has become <em>so great<\/em> in the specific bonding. It\u2019s almost like\u2014nowadays, you take your kid out for a date; right? But five minutes every day really adds up to have some significant quality conversations. They want their daddy time every night\u2014that five minutes\u2014it\u2019s like non-negotiable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Are you finding that this is sticking with your kids? I mean, it\u2019s something that you talked about a few weeks ago is coming back into their conversation; they are going, \u201cI remember that verse.\u201d Is that happening? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> I would say, at their ages, they are not remembering a verse. They are remembering the principle,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014an idea. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> \u2014because they are doing it\/I\u2019m doing it for a whole week, so it really becomes foundational. Then the next week becomes foundational. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne example is\u2014I\u2019m very big on teaching them the fruit of the Spirit; I think that\u2019s important. I think a lot of times, especially\u2014it doesn\u2019t matter if your kids are young or old\u2014when a child comes to faith in Christ, that doesn\u2019t make us more sinless; right? It just makes us saved from our sin, but we still sin. I think one of the theologies we don\u2019t often teach our children, no matter their age, is that the Holy Spirit comes in us to empower us\u2014to empower us to be courageous, to empower us to watch our mouth, to empower us to not have comparison or all of these things\u2014so we\u2019ve specifically spent a week in this devotional on each of the fruit of the Spirit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we now do in our evening prayers as a family is we say: \u201cEvaluate your day; which of the fruit of the Spirit was a little hard for you? I want you to own it, confess it, and then ask the Holy Spirit to empower you to have more self-control or kindness the next day.\u201d This has really helped them to evaluate, at five and six, their own sanctification\/their own needing to become more like Jesus\u2014own that they are still not perfect\/that they need the Holy Spirit\u2014and asking for His help so they are [learning] dependence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And they are hearing <em>you<\/em> start that\u2014it\u2019s not just, \u201cWhere was the fruit of the Spirit absent in your life today?\u201d\u2014but Mom and Dad are going,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cI\u2019ll go first.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think for kids to know, \u201cWe\u2019re [parents] on the same journey that you are on,\u201d and \u201cWe\u2019re having to learn this as well.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> One of the things that just hit me about this is thinking of teenagers\u2014and you\u2019re not there yet\u2014but you know one of the things we noticed with our teenage boys was they would start to ask us questions about our faith. This would have given us a theme, which would have been really interesting, because if we\u2019re talking about courage the whole week\u2014I mean, I\u2019m thinking even when our last son was there, and the other two were in college, he really started reaching out and saying, \u201cTell me your testimony.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was different because the other two weren\u2019t there, [where] it was sort of chaotic; but he really wanted to know. It could be this little thing: \u201cOkay; let\u2019s talk about courage. Dad, when were you afraid?\u2014in college?\u2014last week?\u201d \u201cSon, when were you afraid?\u201d I mean it gives you, like you said, the intentionality. I\u2019m not always the most intentional, so I need to have a resource\/a tool. I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYou\u2019re doing it with little five- and six-year-olds; but when they are fifteen and sixteen, this is going to pay off.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It gives you a chance\u2014you\u2019re right\u2014to tell them your story or, maybe, your failures of when you weren\u2019t courageous or when you were. Third John 1:4 comes to mind: \u201cI have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you\u2019re talking about bedtime\u2014for us\u2014that was one of our favorite times because kids open up at bedtime because they don\u2019t want to go to sleep. I know, as parents\u2014you are tired, and you are exhausted, and you want to just have time to yourself\u2014but I think that time for us has been the most precious time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve shared this before; but one of our sons was getting married. Dave and I were on our knees, actually; because at first, when they are little, you are in the bed with them; then they get a little older, and you\u2019re sitting on the bed. But this night\u2014the night before he got married\u2014we were on our knees, and we were praying for him for the last time before he got married. We had our hands on him, praying for him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, I\u2019m crying because it\u2019s like, \u201cMan, I\u2019m so excited for you; but this is an end of an era.\u201d I asked him, \u201cAustin, what will you miss the most about living under our roof?\u201d He said, \u201c<em>This<\/em>; you guys praying for me every night. This will be something I\u2019ll carry on.\u201d It was so interesting because later we asked his wife, \u201cWhat will you miss about being under your parents\u2019 roof?\u201d She said the same thing: \u201cMy parents praying for me at night in bed.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know that [when] we\u2019re in the midst of it\u2014we\u2019re exhausted; we\u2019re thinking, \u201cThis doesn\u2019t make any difference. They are playing; they\u2019re totally out of it,\u201d\u2014those moments sink deep into a child\u2019s life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe [Ann, Dave and Bob] all know because our kids are grown. Those are the greatest joys. Bob, when you just played that video of your grandson memorizing Scripture\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No greater joy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014than to know that our kids are walking in the truth; that\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dave:<\/strong> I was just thinking, \u201cThat son\u2014when we call him on FaceTime<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014they\u2019ve got four kids, and it\u2019s absolute <em>chaos<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014<em>chaos<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I mean, kids are running naked; you know? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> They are five, three, two, and one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We\u2019re just like, \u201cHow in the world do you survive?\u201d It\u2019s exactly what we experienced back in the day, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> But it\u2019s so sweet; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014the cool thing is, when they get ready for bedtime\u2014because we\u2019ve been there\u2014they are on their knees; they are praying. They are doing what they\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> They are singing songs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It\u2019s really cool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Really cool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Holly, this is a gift, really, for parents to have this laid out\/to have it systematized for them. interaction with your kids, first of all, you\u2019ve acknowledged that you know what\u2019s going on in their world\/that they\u2019re facing something new. You\u2019ve told them the promises of God will be with them in the midst of that, and you prepared them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I\u2019m thinking, at the end of the day, when they come home, and you say, \u201cDid you have a chance to be courageous today? Were you afraid?\u201d You have those conversations as a follow up; and they see, \u201cThis is not just something that\u2019s abstract. This is something that applies to what I\u2019m living.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Yes; and that\u2019s where we continue on with the Deuteronomy 6, where it says, \u201cEngage with them when you are sitting down, when you are lying down, when you wake up.\u201d We\u2019re living it out: you start in the morning with it; you discuss it at dinner or near bedtime; and it becomes the conversation of the week. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re not trying to get kids to memorize these verses every day; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> But in reading them out loud, and reading slowly with the kids, you\u2019re helping them understand, \u201cGod\u2019s Word is real; it\u2019s practical; it makes sense; it applies to my life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s funny. Somewhere in your book\u2014I don\u2019t remember where\u2014wasn\u2019t there a story about Carter with a bully? Talk about being strong and courageous. Tell that; it\u2019s pretty cute. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Remember, my son is only in kindergarten this past year. We have been trying to help them understand that not everyone in their public school knows about Jesus, let alone wants to follow Jesus. We need to have compassion on them, but we want to share Jesus with others. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe saw a bully in the playground. He went up to him and he said\u2014as an evangelist, I have to work on his approach\u2014but he said, \u201cDo you believe in Jesus?\u201d The bully said, \u201cYes.\u201d Carter looked at him, surprised, and says, \u201cWell then why don\u2019t you act more like Him?\u201d [Laughter] Because He understands, \u201cIf we do believe in Jesus, there is an expectation that we become more like Him,\u201d\u2014already, at age six. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He didn\u2019t get punched for saying that; did he? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> He didn\u2019t! No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> He just came home a little confused. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> But he\u2019s being strong and courageous. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Most people run from bullies, and they don\u2019t speak at all. There he is\u2014living it out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It\u2019s funny, because kids get excited about sharing Jesus. I remember I would share the story\u2014even at the dinner table sometimes\u2014about Adam and Eve and the fall, and the serpent and Satan, and our need for Jesus of coming to redeem and connect us back with God. They love this story so much, they ask me to repeat it all the time; because it really becomes, then, you keep taking it into the gospel. Their friends would come over, who were like ten years old\u2014like, \u201cMom, tell the Garden story,\u201d\u2014you know, they want me to share the gospel. These kids are like into it, which is\/we assume that they won\u2019t be; but they really become that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCan you give us\u2014like what are the other themes each day for courage? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Sure; Monday was \u201cDo not be afraid.\u201d Tuesday is \u201cPut your hope in God\u201d; Wednesday, \u201cYour work will be rewarded\u201d; Thursday, \u201cBe courageous to obey God\u201d; and Friday, \u201cBe courageous in waiting.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have to think Joshua is in there somewhere; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Yes; there is\u2014two Joshua\u2019s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Because I hear, \u201cBe strong and courageous\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and I think, \u201cHave I not commanded you, be strong and courageous?\u201d In fact, when our kids were growing up, there was a song\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes! It\u2019s\u2014I was just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014[Singing] \u201cHave I not commanded you be strong and courageous!\u201d\u2014right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014[Singing] \u201cbe strong and courageous!\u201d What was that from? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Me neither; but we must have listened to the same thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> That sounds like an <em>old<\/em> movie\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No; it\u2019s like either\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014the way you guys sang it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014Psalty the Singing Songbook or\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was one of those. Having some of these verses put to music, I\u2019m thinking about Seeds Family Worship, which we talked about earlier. I\u2019m thinking about all of the different\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Do you know what my wife does now, Bob? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh no!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What does she do? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> She downloaded all the Seeds Family Worship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Every time we walk anywhere, she starts singing verses. She\u2014those really work. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> To have verses to music\u2014this is what makes the Scripture stick in your heart. That\u2019s why I can still remember Joshua 1, years later, because I got the melody in my head along with the words. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Right; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you use Scripture memory songs as a part of this rotation with your family? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> We didn\u2019t do Scripture memory songs. We do use Psalty, like you mentioned. We do have\u2014they listen to Psalty to memorize; but we actually used this idea of memorizing verses A through Z. They would learn a verse that starts with A, learn a verse that starts with B, all the way down to Z. They started doing that when they were three, and they wouldn\u2019t understand the verses; but again, it\u2019s hiding the Word in their heart that they will remember for the rest of their lives\u2014just like you did with that song. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> I do think, just like with your grandson, it\u2019s important to get memorization in, not worry about them always understanding it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> That doesn\u2019t guarantee that they will walk with Jesus the rest of their life; but it does give them an opportunity for the Holy Spirit or for God to just bring that verse back up in a time of need in their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> What about dads? Is there anything?\u2014is there a role for men\/for the dad? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Okay; okay. [Laughter] I\u2019ll just crawl away to the corner; no. Have you seen anything?\u2014is there any way that men can do this or dads could do this? Does it only have to be moms? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> No; in fact, my whole book\u2014I, on purpose, tried not to make the front to look flowery. I, on purpose, did not say, \u201cMoms,\u201d anywhere in my book; because I think it could be dads; it could be moms <em>and<\/em> dads; it could be taking turns. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014which would be even better. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Yes; so nowhere do I emphasize this is a mom manual; it\u2019s a parent manual. I think it\u2019s something\u2014great\u2014I think, if there is only one parent available in the morning, it should be that parent\u2014whoever it is. Then, in the evening, the following parent could follow up; they could ask the questions: \u201cSo what did you learn?\u201d \u201cWhat was your verse today?\u201d \u201cWhat were you praying about?\u201d They could be a learner of the kids so the child could then share what they\u2019ve experienced that day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You know, one of the things we did, when the kids were real little\u2014I don\u2019t know how long we did it\u2014but I would take them\/we called it, \u201cBoys Day Out,\u201d just to give Ann a break; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know if I did it once a month\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014once a month. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014or every couple of weeks. We had this ritual of going to a video game mall and getting A&amp;W<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> root beer. Listening to this right now, it\u2019s like, \u201cThat would have been an opportunity, at least, to take one of these and spend the day, doing my part.\u201d Again, it wouldn\u2019t be just once a month; but it\u2019s a way\u2014if we had had this back then\u2014I would have said, \u201cOkay, Friday is my day,\u201d or \u201cMonday is my day. I\u2019m driving them to school; I\u2019m going to take them through.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m looking at Week 5: \u201cComparison and Jealousy.\u201d That never happens; people never compare or get jealous\u2014[Laughter]\u2014that never ends\u2014but to be able to walk them through truth from the Scripture and to be involved with Ann. I mean, that\u2019s an opportunity for men to jump in. Has your husband done anything in that way? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019m the morning person; so he picks up the kids, and I take the kids. Because we both drive though, he does ask them, as he picks them up: \u201cHow was your day? What did you learn today? How were you in seeing the people around you?\u201d He asks discipleship questions on the drive home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt might not be exactly always related to our prayer in the morning; but the other thing we\u2019ve put into our day\u2014that our children <em>demand<\/em> from my husband\u2014is we do five minutes with them before they go to bed too. We start the day\u2014one of us\u2014with this prayer; but both of us\u2014now, we only have two kids; so if you have like eight kids, this might be a little harder\u2014but we each spend five minutes with each of them, which could end up being ten or more\u2014but every night, they want five minutes <em>alone<\/em> with each parent. That five minutes has become <em>so great<\/em> in the specific bonding. It\u2019s almost like\u2014nowadays, you take your kid out for a date; right? But five minutes every day really adds up to have some significant quality conversations. They want their daddy time every night\u2014that five minutes\u2014it\u2019s like non-negotiable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Are you finding that this is sticking with your kids? I mean, it\u2019s something that you talked about a few weeks ago is coming back into their conversation; they are going, \u201cI remember that verse.\u201d Is that happening? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> I would say, at their ages, they are not remembering a verse. They are remembering the principle,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014an idea. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> \u2014because they are doing it\/I\u2019m doing it for a whole week, so it really becomes foundational. Then the next week becomes foundational. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne example is\u2014I\u2019m very big on teaching them the fruit of the Spirit; I think that\u2019s important. I think a lot of times, especially\u2014it doesn\u2019t matter if your kids are young or old\u2014when a child comes to faith in Christ, that doesn\u2019t make us more sinless; right? It just makes us saved from our sin, but we still sin. I think one of the theologies we don\u2019t often teach our children, no matter their age, is that the Holy Spirit comes in us to empower us\u2014to empower us to be courageous, to empower us to watch our mouth, to empower us to not have comparison or all of these things\u2014so we\u2019ve specifically spent a week in this devotional on each of the fruit of the Spirit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we now do in our evening prayers as a family is we say: \u201cEvaluate your day; which of the fruit of the Spirit was a little hard for you? I want you to own it, confess it, and then ask the Holy Spirit to empower you to have more self-control or kindness the next day.\u201d This has really helped them to evaluate, at five and six, their own sanctification\/their own needing to become more like Jesus\u2014own that they are still not perfect\/that they need the Holy Spirit\u2014and asking for His help so they are [learning] dependence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And they are hearing <em>you<\/em> start that\u2014it\u2019s not just, \u201cWhere was the fruit of the Spirit absent in your life today?\u201d\u2014but Mom and Dad are going,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cI\u2019ll go first.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think for kids to know, \u201cWe\u2019re [parents] on the same journey that you are on,\u201d and \u201cWe\u2019re having to learn this as well.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> One of the things that just hit me about this is thinking of teenagers\u2014and you\u2019re not there yet\u2014but you know one of the things we noticed with our teenage boys was they would start to ask us questions about our faith. This would have given us a theme, which would have been really interesting, because if we\u2019re talking about courage the whole week\u2014I mean, I\u2019m thinking even when our last son was there, and the other two were in college, he really started reaching out and saying, \u201cTell me your testimony.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was different because the other two weren\u2019t there, [where] it was sort of chaotic; but he really wanted to know. It could be this little thing: \u201cOkay; let\u2019s talk about courage. Dad, when were you afraid?\u2014in college?\u2014last week?\u201d \u201cSon, when were you afraid?\u201d I mean it gives you, like you said, the intentionality. I\u2019m not always the most intentional, so I need to have a resource\/a tool. I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYou\u2019re doing it with little five- and six-year-olds; but when they are fifteen and sixteen, this is going to pay off.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It gives you a chance\u2014you\u2019re right\u2014to tell them your story or, maybe, your failures of when you weren\u2019t courageous or when you were. Third John 1:4 comes to mind: \u201cI have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you\u2019re talking about bedtime\u2014for us\u2014that was one of our favorite times because kids open up at bedtime because they don\u2019t want to go to sleep. I know, as parents\u2014you are tired, and you are exhausted, and you want to just have time to yourself\u2014but I think that time for us has been the most precious time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve shared this before; but one of our sons was getting married. Dave and I were on our knees, actually; because at first, when they are little, you are in the bed with them; then they get a little older, and you\u2019re sitting on the bed. But this night\u2014the night before he got married\u2014we were on our knees, and we were praying for him for the last time before he got married. We had our hands on him, praying for him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, I\u2019m crying because it\u2019s like, \u201cMan, I\u2019m so excited for you; but this is an end of an era.\u201d I asked him, \u201cAustin, what will you miss the most about living under our roof?\u201d He said, \u201c<em>This<\/em>; you guys praying for me every night. This will be something I\u2019ll carry on.\u201d It was so interesting because later we asked his wife, \u201cWhat will you miss about being under your parents\u2019 roof?\u201d She said the same thing: \u201cMy parents praying for me at night in bed.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know that [when] we\u2019re in the midst of it\u2014we\u2019re exhausted; we\u2019re thinking, \u201cThis doesn\u2019t make any difference. They are playing; they\u2019re totally out of it,\u201d\u2014those moments sink deep into a child\u2019s life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe [Ann, Dave and Bob] all know because our kids are grown. Those are the greatest joys. Bob, when you just played that video of your grandson memorizing Scripture\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No greater joy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014than to know that our kids are walking in the truth; that\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dave:<\/strong> I was just thinking, \u201cThat son\u2014when we call him on FaceTime<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014they\u2019ve got four kids, and it\u2019s absolute <em>chaos<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014<em>chaos<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I mean, kids are running naked; you know? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> They are five, three, two, and one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We\u2019re just like, \u201cHow in the world do you survive?\u201d It\u2019s exactly what we experienced back in the day, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> But it\u2019s so sweet; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014the cool thing is, when they get ready for bedtime\u2014because we\u2019ve been there\u2014they are on their knees; they are praying. They are doing what they\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> They are singing songs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It\u2019s really cool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Really cool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Holly, this is a gift, really, for parents to have this laid out\/to have it systematized for them.
