I have to think there are parents, who were listening yesterday, who said, \u201cWe have to listen tomorrow.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u201cI\u2019m kind of the edge of my seat\u2014like, \u201cWhat happens next?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right; we\u2019re talking this week to Becket Cook.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>I mean, yesterday, I almost tried to keep us going. I was like, \u201cWe can\u2019t hang it here!\u201d [Laughter] It\u2019s like a teaser to an Episode 2. So here we are\u2014Episode 2.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We have Becket Cook joining us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Becket, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Thank you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We didn\u2019t even explain when we introduced you earlier the fact that you\u2019ve written a book called <em>A Change of Affection<\/em>, which is your memoir; it\u2019s your story. The subtitle: <em>A Gay Man\u2019s Incredible Story of Redemption<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou worked and lived in Hollywood\u2014you still live and work in Hollywood\u2014but for years, in the entertainment industry, as a Hollywood set designer\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014movies\u2014and lived throughout that period of time in the gay lifestyle until, more than a decade ago at a coffee shop, there was a change that happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve already shared with us you grew up as the youngest of eight kids in Dallas. You sensed same-sex attraction when you were in late elementary school. You were sexually abused as a young child. You started acting out during junior high and high school. Eventually, after college, you came to a point, where you said you were going to own your identity and say, \u201cI am a gay man.\u201d You were in a relationship with somebody that you\u2019d fallen in love with; came home; told your parents, \u201cI\u2019m gay, and I\u2019m moving to Hollywood,\u201d and \u201cThis is who I am.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou probably felt some sense of relief and liberation. It\u2019s kind of like, \u201cMy new life has started, and this is going to be glorious.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes; when I moved to L.A., it was this very liberating experience for me; because I immediately fell into this group of friends. They were all from the east coast, from Ivy League schools. They were smart, and ambitious, and hilarious, and witty, and clever, and fun, and funny. They all worked in the business\u2014producers, actors, directors, writers\u2014it was this kind of magical time for me in L.A. in the \u201990s.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn my friend group, people were suddenly becoming famous overnight. I moved to L.A. to be a writer and an actor, and I struggled with it. I ended up doing a ton of commercial acting. I really succeeded in that a lot, but that never really fully took off. Then I was, you know, a struggling writer. I was able to write a couple of TV pilots that sold to production companies. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wrote a lot of spec screen plays; and I thought, \u201cOkay, this is where it\u2019s going to happen.\u201d Then I wrote these two spec screen plays for movies; and one of them\u2014or both of them\u2014came <em>super<\/em> close to getting actually made or getting green lit, but then they fell apart. I was like, \u201cWhat is happening? Why do the doors keep closing and closing?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, looking back, I see that God was kind of protecting me from that kind of success; because, if I had become a successful actor or writer, I would have just gone off and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019d have been farther out on the edge of the galaxy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014a longer way back to Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014if you had gone in that direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014which, at that point, what [was] your view of God? Was God in the picture at all? Did you have any belief?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>No; I mean, I never really connected with God as a kid. I went to mass devoutly with my family, and I never felt a real connection to God or thought He was real. I thought it was just kind of this religion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, by the time I was in L.A. for all those years, I just became an atheist. It was this unspoken thing. We didn\u2019t even have to say it; we just all <em>knew<\/em> that God didn\u2019t exist and that Christians were just people in the Bible belt. Never once did any of us ask the other person, \u201cIs there a God?\u201d We all just assumed it was all a myth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Never any sense of: \u201cMaybe the lifestyle I\u2019m living is wrong in some way\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>I never felt like it was <em>wrong<\/em>. Maybe deep, deep down there was a kind of a sense of: \u201cSomething\u2019s a little off here\u201d; but I wasn\u2019t even aware\/cognizant of that at the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What about your view of long-term, monogamous relationships versus partying and promiscuity?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>There was an article in the <em>New Yorker<\/em> I read years and years ago. This couple in the \u201920s\u2014this heterosexual couple\u2014the husband said, \u201cI hope you know that our marriage is going to be thoroughly modern, and it\u2019s going to be open.\u201d That\u2019s kind of how I felt. When you live in a post-modern, relativist world\u2014and there is no God\u2014then there\u2019s nothing to hold you back from doing whatever you want. It becomes very burdensome; because you never know what\u2019s right, what\u2019s wrong, what\u2019s up, what\u2019s down; you\u2019re just kind of like: \u201cWell, I guess I can cheat,\u201d \u201cI guess my boyfriend can cheat on me, and it\u2019s okay. I\u2019m not sure; because why couldn\u2019t he, really?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of my relationships were two years long. I had five serious, serious relationships; they were two years long. They had the same sine wave; it was always really great in the beginning, and then it would always kind of become toxic and then taper off; and then we would break up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat whole cycle was <em>exhausting<\/em>. I always <em>wanted<\/em> a long-term relationship, I guess; but I was opposed to convention. When you\u2019re gay, and living in that postmodernist world, you don\u2019t want anything to do with convention. The idea of a long-term relationship, with a picket fence and gay marriage, and all of that\u2014that was the <em>last<\/em> thing I wanted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; but five breakups from serious relationships? That\u2019s not just something you go, \u201cOh, well.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>No; they were very, very painful. What\u2019s <em>weird<\/em> about that is\u2014every time I met a new guy, and got into a new relationship, I always thought, \u201cOkay, this is <em>definitely<\/em> the one. This one is definitely going to be lifelong,\u201d or whatever. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a long-term relationship. Those past three guys\u2014I thought they were the one, but this is actually going to be the real one.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Never, in any of those dark nights of the soul\u2014where a breakup\u2019s happened; and it\u2019s the fourth time, and you\u2019re just feeling miserable, and going, \u201cIs this all that life is?\u201d and \u201cI don\u2019t know that I want to live anymore,\u201d\u2014you never thought, \u201cI wonder if there\u2019s a God, and if there\u2019s a meaning in life\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>No; I never\/during that time, I never thought those thoughts. I had a really bad breakup with a guy in Rome. I basically\u2014I wrote a screenplay about it. I <em>fled<\/em> Rome; I had to literally flee for my life; that was one of the darkest times. When I got back to L.A., I was in bed for a month; I couldn\u2019t get out of bed. But I never thought about searching for God. It was just kind of like, \u201cOkay; I guess I need to find another relationship.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>So you were looking for other things to fill those gaps.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes, yes. There were kind of two\u2014career or relationship\u2014people kind of focus on one or the other to fill that void. For me, career was really important; but for me, the relationship was the <em>really<\/em> important thing to fill the void.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did anybody ever try to talk to you about Jesus in those 20 years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>No; not a single person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What do you think about that? I mean, as you think back on 20 years, and nobody ever said\/no Christian ever came up to you and said, \u201cHey, Becket\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>I wasn\u2019t even <em>aware<\/em> of Christians. I don\u2019t know if there were\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You don\u2019t know if you knew anybody who was! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>\u2014Christians in L.A.! I didn\u2019t know <em>one<\/em> Christian, so I don\u2019t even know who would have done that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>You walk into that coffee shop.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes; that was almost 11 years ago. I was with my best friend, and we did our usual weekend stuff. We went to brunch in Venice, California; and then we would go shopping in Beverly Hills or West Hollywood; and then we would go to this coffee shop, and we would hang out there. It was beautiful; it was always sunny and beautiful. Tons of people there, coming in and out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut that particular day, in 2009, I was with my best friend. We were talking across from each other at the table; and suddenly, we look over; we notice there\u2019s a table next to us. It\u2019s five young people with Bibles on the table\u2014like physical Bibles.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, this is best friends, not a boyfriend?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>No; best friend, who\u2019s gay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>He loved to kind of just get into sort of controversial subjects in conversations, so he urged me to talk to them. I was like, \u201cNo, I don\u2019t want to talk to them!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Wait, wait. He likes to get into subjects, but he urges you? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>I was always the one that had to do the heavy lifting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>He\u2019s egging you on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes, he\u2019s egging me on. I finally turned to this table\u2014it\u2019s like a Christian\u2019s fantasy\u2014like, \u201cHey, what do you guys believe? I\u2019m an atheist!\u201d [Laughter] I turned to them and I said, \u201cAre you guys Christians?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said, \u201cYes.\u201d I said, \u201cWell, explain what you believe; because I grew up Catholic. I don\u2019t even remember\u2014like what\u2019s your faith? Explain what you believe and why.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Here, you guys\u2014are you just kind of mocking them?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>No; the reason I was genuinely interested was\u2014six months prior to that day\u2014 I was at Paris Fashion Week. I\u2019d gone to a bunch of the shows, and there are always after-parties after these shows. This was in March of 2009. I remember drinking champagne and looking out over the crowd; everyone was dancing, and there was music. I was sitting with these fashion people at my table. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI felt this overwhelming sense of emptiness; and I thought, \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d I thought, \u201cI can\u2019t live\u2014what\u2019s\u2014I can\u2019t keep doing this; I can\u2019t just keep going to parties.\u201d I had been going to premiers and Oscars, the Golden Globes, the Emmys\u2014all the after-parties. I knew everyone, met everyone, did everything in Hollywood. That night, I had that moment of: \u201cIs that all there is to a fire? Is that all there is?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSix months later\u2014fast forward when I was at the coffee shop\u2014that\u2019s why I was open to actually hearing, because I was kind of like\u2014I was in a weird, desperate state. I was like, \u201cWhat do you believe? I need to know something. I need\u2026\u201d I was kind of tired of not knowing the meaning life; it becomes very exhausting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019d been with a counselor, where you had asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s the meaning of life?\u201d; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes! I was at therapy for five years with my analyst; and yes, every week, we would have sessions. It\u2019s just like we never got anywhere. Finally, at the end of five years, I was like, \u201cDr. Jones, what am I doing here? What\u2019s the point? What\u2019s the meaning of life?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe just looked at me, as he always did, and he said, \u201cWell, what do you think the meaning of life is?\u201d [Laughter] I\u2019m like, \u201cOkay, I quit! I quit! I\u2019m leaving! I can\u2019t deal with this anymore!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>I think that\u2019s a question, at some point, we ask\/we all ask: \u201cWhat is the point?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, three big questions, I think: \u201cWhere did I come from?\u201d \u201cWhy am I here?\u201d \u201cWhat happens when I die?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Everybody is wrestling, at some level internally, with: \u201cWhere did I come from?\u201d \u201cWhy am I here?\u201d \u201cWhat happens when I die?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Yes; in the quiet of their hearts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Well, see, that\u2019s the thing\u2014is I had so many shiny objects\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Yes; so much noise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>\u2014for so long, and so many fun, crazy experiences and parties; so that kind of kept me from having those deeper questions; because I was like, \u201cThis is what life is all about. It\u2019s about having these amazing experiences, finding true love, being successful in my career. That\u2019s the point of this life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The coffee shop\u2014you say, \u201cWhat do you guys believe?\u201d\u2014and they\u2019re like, \u201cAre you serious?!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>\u201cDo you really want to know?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>They told me, you know, about their faith, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What did they say? Do you remember?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>I don\u2019t remember exactly what they said. I think they just basically told me the gospel, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Did your friend go over, too; or was he still at the table?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>He was kind of like behind me a little bit. He kind of stayed a little behind, but he was listening to the whole conversation. We talked about their faith. They told me they went to an evangelical church in Hollywood. I, of course, got to the $64,000-question; and I said, \u201cWell, what does your church in Hollywood believe about homosexuality?\u201d They said, \u201cWell, we believe it\u2019s a sin.\u201d I loved how frank and just blunt they were.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that moment, I had this thing of: \u201cOkay, what if God does exist? I mean, there\u2019s a slim, slim chance that He does exist; and if He does exist, what if this is wrong? What if homosexuality is wrong?\u201d and \u201cWhat if I\u2019ve built my entire life on a false foundation, and I don\u2019t know it?\u201d This all kind of just flashed in my mind. I, instead of just storming off and throwing a drink on them, I just accepted what they said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is important; because every Christian is thinking, \u201cIf I get hit with that question, and if the guy who\u2019s asking me is giving off any signal that he might be gay\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Here\u2019s the stock answer: \u201cGod loves homosexuals; He loves you; He loves me. You know, the sin question really doesn\u2019t need to be answered right now,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>\u2014that would be what a lot of people would say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>People want to hedge; they want to obfuscate; and you\u2019re saying: \u201cDon\u2019t do that!\u201d Be straight with people.\u201d You can do that in a way that still reflects grace and kindness; and say, \u201cYou know, we think the Bible says it\u2019s a sin against God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes, and I was impressed with that. They invited me to their church the following Sunday. I said, you know, \u201cI don\u2019t know if I\u2019ll go, but give me the address, and whatever; I\u2019ll think about it.\u201d I had a whole week to really think it\u2014and I really did; I thought about it. I was like: \u201cIf I go, it could be humiliating and embarrassing if this is all a myth and it\u2019s not real,\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m really putting myself out there,\u201d and \u201cWhat if my friends find out that I\u2019m going to this church? That\u2019s a real scandal.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the following Sunday morning I woke up and I was like [speaking quizzically], \u201cI guess I\u2019m going to church today.\u201d [Laughter] I don\u2019t know; I just kind of\u2014I got in my car; and it felt like a Tesla, like it just self-drove to church. [Laughter] I got to this auditorium where it meets. I remember thinking, you know, \u201cI really like how minimal it is.\u201d It wasn\u2019t stained glass windows, and smoke, and candles, and bells, and vestments; it was very plain\u2014I appreciated that\u2014because I had never been to an evangelical church; I didn\u2019t know what it was like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I heard the Christian worship band playing. I immediately cringed; because I was like, \u201cChristian music; I forgot that was a thing!\u201d [Laughter] But then I was like, \u201cWait, it\u2019s actually good; it\u2019s nice.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI walked in and sat near the front by myself. The pastor came out and started preaching on Romans, Chapter 7. He was in a two-year series on Romans, and he just started preaching for an hour. It was just full gospel, and he\u2019s a very powerful preacher. I just remember thinking, while it was happening, every word he was saying was resonating as truth in my mind and my heart; and I didn\u2019t know why. I was like, \u201cWhoa.\u201d Everything he was saying, I would be like, \u201cThat\u2019s true!\u201d I didn\u2019t know <em>why<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t want him to stop preaching; I just wanted him to keep going. I was literally on the edge of my seat. He finally left the stage. There were people on the prayer ministry on the side of the church who, during the second set of worship, who would pray for you if you needed prayer for anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did the same thing\u2014I was like, \u201cIf I go over there, it\u2019s going to be embarrassing,\u201d\u2014and I was kind of going back and forth on my foot. I finally went over the side. I walked up to this guy, once again, and I\u2019m like, \u201cHey, I don\u2019t know what I believe, but I\u2019m here.\u201d He said, \u201cOkay, let me pray for you.\u201d It seemed really powerful, and it seemed really <em>loving<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I walked back to my seat, and I sat down. Everyone else was standing and worshipping for 25 more minutes; they were singing. I sat down; I was sitting there, processing everything. All of a sudden, the Holy Spirit was like [rushing noise], and God overwhelmed me, and revealed Himself to me. In that moment, it was like, in my mind, God was like, \u201cI\u2019m God; Jesus is my Son; heaven\u2019s real; hell\u2019s real; the Bible\u2019s true; welcome to My kingdom.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was like, \u201cWhoa!\u201d I just started bawling, and bawling, and bawling. I was crying over my sin, but also over the fact that I had just met the King of the universe, Jesus. It felt like the curtains had parted for the first time in my life. I could finally see reality and see the truth, and it was so cathartic. I couldn\u2019t stop crying. I mean, I was hysterically crying, to the point where people around me were worried about me; they were going to call the medics or something.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I got home right after that service, and it happened again. I was in bed to take a nap, because I was so overwhelmed. It was like Moses, when he was in the cleft of the rock, and God passes by with His glory. God was like, \u201cLet Me show you some more of My glory.\u201d [Rushing sound] He just floods me again with His Spirit, and I jump out of bed. I\u2019m like, \u201cOh my!\u201d and I start crying again. I\u2019m like, \u201cYou have my whole life! It\u2019s Yours! I\u2019m done!\u201d And that was it; in the middle of my bedroom, I was like, \u201cI am all Yours.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew, in that moment, that homosexuality was a sin. I knew that I was wrong; I knew that it was no longer my identity or who I was. It was a thing of the past, but I didn\u2019t care; because I had just met Jesus. I\u2019m like, \u201cI\u2019m going with <em>this<\/em> guy, Jesus.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>That was September 20, 2009.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Wow! I mean, few people have a conversion experience like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s what I didn\u2019t know! I thought\/when that happened to me, I assumed everyone had that same conversion experience. But I guess\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Well, I mean, Scripture says we get the mind of Christ; and for most of us, it feels like that\u2019s a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>\u2014Road to Damascus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Yes. For us, it\u2019s over years and months that the mind of Christ\u2014I mean, it is immediate\u2014but yours was <em>immediate<\/em>. I mean, understanding sin, heaven, hell, your lifestyle\u2014all in a download\u2014you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>I know. God had a ton of grace on me that day. I don\u2019t know why, but He just did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That meant that the next day was going to require some differences. Becket, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Thank you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We didn\u2019t even explain when we introduced you earlier the fact that you\u2019ve written a book called <em>A Change of Affection<\/em>, which is your memoir; it\u2019s your story. The subtitle: <em>A Gay Man\u2019s Incredible Story of Redemption<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou worked and lived in Hollywood\u2014you still live and work in Hollywood\u2014but for years, in the entertainment industry, as a Hollywood set designer\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014movies\u2014and lived throughout that period of time in the gay lifestyle until, more than a decade ago at a coffee shop, there was a change that happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve already shared with us you grew up as the youngest of eight kids in Dallas. You sensed same-sex attraction when you were in late elementary school. You were sexually abused as a young child. You started acting out during junior high and high school. Eventually, after college, you came to a point, where you said you were going to own your identity and say, \u201cI am a gay man.\u201d You were in a relationship with somebody that you\u2019d fallen in love with; came home; told your parents, \u201cI\u2019m gay, and I\u2019m moving to Hollywood,\u201d and \u201cThis is who I am.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou probably felt some sense of relief and liberation. It\u2019s kind of like, \u201cMy new life has started, and this is going to be glorious.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes; when I moved to L.A., it was this very liberating experience for me; because I immediately fell into this group of friends. They were all from the east coast, from Ivy League schools. They were smart, and ambitious, and hilarious, and witty, and clever, and fun, and funny. They all worked in the business\u2014producers, actors, directors, writers\u2014it was this kind of magical time for me in L.A. in the \u201990s.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn my friend group, people were suddenly becoming famous overnight. I moved to L.A. to be a writer and an actor, and I struggled with it. I ended up doing a ton of commercial acting. I really succeeded in that a lot, but that never really fully took off. Then I was, you know, a struggling writer. I was able to write a couple of TV pilots that sold to production companies. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wrote a lot of spec screen plays; and I thought, \u201cOkay, this is where it\u2019s going to happen.\u201d Then I wrote these two spec screen plays for movies; and one of them\u2014or both of them\u2014came <em>super<\/em> close to getting actually made or getting green lit, but then they fell apart. I was like, \u201cWhat is happening? Why do the doors keep closing and closing?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, looking back, I see that God was kind of protecting me from that kind of success; because, if I had become a successful actor or writer, I would have just gone off and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019d have been farther out on the edge of the galaxy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014a longer way back to Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014if you had gone in that direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014which, at that point, what [was] your view of God? Was God in the picture at all? Did you have any belief?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>No; I mean, I never really connected with God as a kid. I went to mass devoutly with my family, and I never felt a real connection to God or thought He was real. I thought it was just kind of this religion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, by the time I was in L.A. for all those years, I just became an atheist. It was this unspoken thing. We didn\u2019t even have to say it; we just all <em>knew<\/em> that God didn\u2019t exist and that Christians were just people in the Bible belt. Never once did any of us ask the other person, \u201cIs there a God?\u201d We all just assumed it was all a myth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Never any sense of: \u201cMaybe the lifestyle I\u2019m living is wrong in some way\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>I never felt like it was <em>wrong<\/em>. Maybe deep, deep down there was a kind of a sense of: \u201cSomething\u2019s a little off here\u201d; but I wasn\u2019t even aware\/cognizant of that at the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What about your view of long-term, monogamous relationships versus partying and promiscuity?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>There was an article in the <em>New Yorker<\/em> I read years and years ago. This couple in the \u201920s\u2014this heterosexual couple\u2014the husband said, \u201cI hope you know that our marriage is going to be thoroughly modern, and it\u2019s going to be open.\u201d That\u2019s kind of how I felt. When you live in a post-modern, relativist world\u2014and there is no God\u2014then there\u2019s nothing to hold you back from doing whatever you want. It becomes very burdensome; because you never know what\u2019s right, what\u2019s wrong, what\u2019s up, what\u2019s down; you\u2019re just kind of like: \u201cWell, I guess I can cheat,\u201d \u201cI guess my boyfriend can cheat on me, and it\u2019s okay. I\u2019m not sure; because why couldn\u2019t he, really?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of my relationships were two years long. I had five serious, serious relationships; they were two years long. They had the same sine wave; it was always really great in the beginning, and then it would always kind of become toxic and then taper off; and then we would break up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat whole cycle was <em>exhausting<\/em>. I always <em>wanted<\/em> a long-term relationship, I guess; but I was opposed to convention. When you\u2019re gay, and living in that postmodernist world, you don\u2019t want anything to do with convention. The idea of a long-term relationship, with a picket fence and gay marriage, and all of that\u2014that was the <em>last<\/em> thing I wanted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; but five breakups from serious relationships? That\u2019s not just something you go, \u201cOh, well.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>No; they were very, very painful. What\u2019s <em>weird<\/em> about that is\u2014every time I met a new guy, and got into a new relationship, I always thought, \u201cOkay, this is <em>definitely<\/em> the one. This one is definitely going to be lifelong,\u201d or whatever. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a long-term relationship. Those past three guys\u2014I thought they were the one, but this is actually going to be the real one.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Never, in any of those dark nights of the soul\u2014where a breakup\u2019s happened; and it\u2019s the fourth time, and you\u2019re just feeling miserable, and going, \u201cIs this all that life is?\u201d and \u201cI don\u2019t know that I want to live anymore,\u201d\u2014you never thought, \u201cI wonder if there\u2019s a God, and if there\u2019s a meaning in life\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>No; I never\/during that time, I never thought those thoughts. I had a really bad breakup with a guy in Rome. I basically\u2014I wrote a screenplay about it. I <em>fled<\/em> Rome; I had to literally flee for my life; that was one of the darkest times. When I got back to L.A., I was in bed for a month; I couldn\u2019t get out of bed. But I never thought about searching for God. It was just kind of like, \u201cOkay; I guess I need to find another relationship.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>So you were looking for other things to fill those gaps.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes, yes. There were kind of two\u2014career or relationship\u2014people kind of focus on one or the other to fill that void. For me, career was really important; but for me, the relationship was the <em>really<\/em> important thing to fill the void.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did anybody ever try to talk to you about Jesus in those 20 years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>No; not a single person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What do you think about that? I mean, as you think back on 20 years, and nobody ever said\/no Christian ever came up to you and said, \u201cHey, Becket\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>I wasn\u2019t even <em>aware<\/em> of Christians. I don\u2019t know if there were\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You don\u2019t know if you knew anybody who was! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>\u2014Christians in L.A.! I didn\u2019t know <em>one<\/em> Christian, so I don\u2019t even know who would have done that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>You walk into that coffee shop.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes; that was almost 11 years ago. I was with my best friend, and we did our usual weekend stuff. We went to brunch in Venice, California; and then we would go shopping in Beverly Hills or West Hollywood; and then we would go to this coffee shop, and we would hang out there. It was beautiful; it was always sunny and beautiful. Tons of people there, coming in and out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut that particular day, in 2009, I was with my best friend. We were talking across from each other at the table; and suddenly, we look over; we notice there\u2019s a table next to us. It\u2019s five young people with Bibles on the table\u2014like physical Bibles.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, this is best friends, not a boyfriend?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>No; best friend, who\u2019s gay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>He loved to kind of just get into sort of controversial subjects in conversations, so he urged me to talk to them. I was like, \u201cNo, I don\u2019t want to talk to them!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Wait, wait. He likes to get into subjects, but he urges you? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>I was always the one that had to do the heavy lifting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>He\u2019s egging you on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes, he\u2019s egging me on. I finally turned to this table\u2014it\u2019s like a Christian\u2019s fantasy\u2014like, \u201cHey, what do you guys believe? I\u2019m an atheist!\u201d [Laughter] I turned to them and I said, \u201cAre you guys Christians?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said, \u201cYes.\u201d I said, \u201cWell, explain what you believe; because I grew up Catholic. I don\u2019t even remember\u2014like what\u2019s your faith? Explain what you believe and why.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Here, you guys\u2014are you just kind of mocking them?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>No; the reason I was genuinely interested was\u2014six months prior to that day\u2014 I was at Paris Fashion Week. I\u2019d gone to a bunch of the shows, and there are always after-parties after these shows. This was in March of 2009. I remember drinking champagne and looking out over the crowd; everyone was dancing, and there was music. I was sitting with these fashion people at my table. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI felt this overwhelming sense of emptiness; and I thought, \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d I thought, \u201cI can\u2019t live\u2014what\u2019s\u2014I can\u2019t keep doing this; I can\u2019t just keep going to parties.\u201d I had been going to premiers and Oscars, the Golden Globes, the Emmys\u2014all the after-parties. I knew everyone, met everyone, did everything in Hollywood. That night, I had that moment of: \u201cIs that all there is to a fire? Is that all there is?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSix months later\u2014fast forward when I was at the coffee shop\u2014that\u2019s why I was open to actually hearing, because I was kind of like\u2014I was in a weird, desperate state. I was like, \u201cWhat do you believe? I need to know something. I need\u2026\u201d I was kind of tired of not knowing the meaning life; it becomes very exhausting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019d been with a counselor, where you had asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s the meaning of life?\u201d; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes! I was at therapy for five years with my analyst; and yes, every week, we would have sessions. It\u2019s just like we never got anywhere. Finally, at the end of five years, I was like, \u201cDr. Jones, what am I doing here? What\u2019s the point? What\u2019s the meaning of life?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe just looked at me, as he always did, and he said, \u201cWell, what do you think the meaning of life is?\u201d [Laughter] I\u2019m like, \u201cOkay, I quit! I quit! I\u2019m leaving! I can\u2019t deal with this anymore!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>I think that\u2019s a question, at some point, we ask\/we all ask: \u201cWhat is the point?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, three big questions, I think: \u201cWhere did I come from?\u201d \u201cWhy am I here?\u201d \u201cWhat happens when I die?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Everybody is wrestling, at some level internally, with: \u201cWhere did I come from?\u201d \u201cWhy am I here?\u201d \u201cWhat happens when I die?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Yes; in the quiet of their hearts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Well, see, that\u2019s the thing\u2014is I had so many shiny objects\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Yes; so much noise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>\u2014for so long, and so many fun, crazy experiences and parties; so that kind of kept me from having those deeper questions; because I was like, \u201cThis is what life is all about. It\u2019s about having these amazing experiences, finding true love, being successful in my career. That\u2019s the point of this life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The coffee shop\u2014you say, \u201cWhat do you guys believe?\u201d\u2014and they\u2019re like, \u201cAre you serious?!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>\u201cDo you really want to know?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>They told me, you know, about their faith, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What did they say? Do you remember?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>I don\u2019t remember exactly what they said. I think they just basically told me the gospel, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Did your friend go over, too; or was he still at the table?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>He was kind of like behind me a little bit. He kind of stayed a little behind, but he was listening to the whole conversation. We talked about their faith. They told me they went to an evangelical church in Hollywood. I, of course, got to the $64,000-question; and I said, \u201cWell, what does your church in Hollywood believe about homosexuality?\u201d They said, \u201cWell, we believe it\u2019s a sin.\u201d I loved how frank and just blunt they were.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that moment, I had this thing of: \u201cOkay, what if God does exist? I mean, there\u2019s a slim, slim chance that He does exist; and if He does exist, what if this is wrong? What if homosexuality is wrong?\u201d and \u201cWhat if I\u2019ve built my entire life on a false foundation, and I don\u2019t know it?\u201d This all kind of just flashed in my mind. I, instead of just storming off and throwing a drink on them, I just accepted what they said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is important; because every Christian is thinking, \u201cIf I get hit with that question, and if the guy who\u2019s asking me is giving off any signal that he might be gay\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Here\u2019s the stock answer: \u201cGod loves homosexuals; He loves you; He loves me. You know, the sin question really doesn\u2019t need to be answered right now,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>\u2014that would be what a lot of people would say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>People want to hedge; they want to obfuscate; and you\u2019re saying: \u201cDon\u2019t do that!\u201d Be straight with people.\u201d You can do that in a way that still reflects grace and kindness; and say, \u201cYou know, we think the Bible says it\u2019s a sin against God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Yes, and I was impressed with that. They invited me to their church the following Sunday. I said, you know, \u201cI don\u2019t know if I\u2019ll go, but give me the address, and whatever; I\u2019ll think about it.\u201d I had a whole week to really think it\u2014and I really did; I thought about it. I was like: \u201cIf I go, it could be humiliating and embarrassing if this is all a myth and it\u2019s not real,\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m really putting myself out there,\u201d and \u201cWhat if my friends find out that I\u2019m going to this church? That\u2019s a real scandal.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the following Sunday morning I woke up and I was like [speaking quizzically], \u201cI guess I\u2019m going to church today.\u201d [Laughter] I don\u2019t know; I just kind of\u2014I got in my car; and it felt like a Tesla, like it just self-drove to church. [Laughter] I got to this auditorium where it meets. I remember thinking, you know, \u201cI really like how minimal it is.\u201d It wasn\u2019t stained glass windows, and smoke, and candles, and bells, and vestments; it was very plain\u2014I appreciated that\u2014because I had never been to an evangelical church; I didn\u2019t know what it was like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I heard the Christian worship band playing. I immediately cringed; because I was like, \u201cChristian music; I forgot that was a thing!\u201d [Laughter] But then I was like, \u201cWait, it\u2019s actually good; it\u2019s nice.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI walked in and sat near the front by myself. The pastor came out and started preaching on Romans, Chapter 7. He was in a two-year series on Romans, and he just started preaching for an hour. It was just full gospel, and he\u2019s a very powerful preacher. I just remember thinking, while it was happening, every word he was saying was resonating as truth in my mind and my heart; and I didn\u2019t know why. I was like, \u201cWhoa.\u201d Everything he was saying, I would be like, \u201cThat\u2019s true!\u201d I didn\u2019t know <em>why<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t want him to stop preaching; I just wanted him to keep going. I was literally on the edge of my seat. He finally left the stage. There were people on the prayer ministry on the side of the church who, during the second set of worship, who would pray for you if you needed prayer for anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did the same thing\u2014I was like, \u201cIf I go over there, it\u2019s going to be embarrassing,\u201d\u2014and I was kind of going back and forth on my foot. I finally went over the side. I walked up to this guy, once again, and I\u2019m like, \u201cHey, I don\u2019t know what I believe, but I\u2019m here.\u201d He said, \u201cOkay, let me pray for you.\u201d It seemed really powerful, and it seemed really <em>loving<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I walked back to my seat, and I sat down. Everyone else was standing and worshipping for 25 more minutes; they were singing. I sat down; I was sitting there, processing everything. All of a sudden, the Holy Spirit was like [rushing noise], and God overwhelmed me, and revealed Himself to me. In that moment, it was like, in my mind, God was like, \u201cI\u2019m God; Jesus is my Son; heaven\u2019s real; hell\u2019s real; the Bible\u2019s true; welcome to My kingdom.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was like, \u201cWhoa!\u201d I just started bawling, and bawling, and bawling. I was crying over my sin, but also over the fact that I had just met the King of the universe, Jesus. It felt like the curtains had parted for the first time in my life. I could finally see reality and see the truth, and it was so cathartic. I couldn\u2019t stop crying. I mean, I was hysterically crying, to the point where people around me were worried about me; they were going to call the medics or something.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I got home right after that service, and it happened again. I was in bed to take a nap, because I was so overwhelmed. It was like Moses, when he was in the cleft of the rock, and God passes by with His glory. God was like, \u201cLet Me show you some more of My glory.\u201d [Rushing sound] He just floods me again with His Spirit, and I jump out of bed. I\u2019m like, \u201cOh my!\u201d and I start crying again. I\u2019m like, \u201cYou have my whole life! It\u2019s Yours! I\u2019m done!\u201d And that was it; in the middle of my bedroom, I was like, \u201cI am all Yours.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew, in that moment, that homosexuality was a sin. I knew that I was wrong; I knew that it was no longer my identity or who I was. It was a thing of the past, but I didn\u2019t care; because I had just met Jesus. I\u2019m like, \u201cI\u2019m going with <em>this<\/em> guy, Jesus.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>That was September 20, 2009.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Wow! I mean, few people have a conversion experience like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s what I didn\u2019t know! I thought\/when that happened to me, I assumed everyone had that same conversion experience. But I guess\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Well, I mean, Scripture says we get the mind of Christ; and for most of us, it feels like that\u2019s a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>\u2014Road to Damascus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Yes. For us, it\u2019s over years and months that the mind of Christ\u2014I mean, it is immediate\u2014but yours was <em>immediate<\/em>. I mean, understanding sin, heaven, hell, your lifestyle\u2014all in a download\u2014you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becket: <\/strong>I know. God had a ton of grace on me that day. I don\u2019t know why, but He just did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That meant that the next day was going to require some differences.
