In fact, there is a term\u2014it\u2019s called asset drift and unintended disinheritance\u2014you\u2019ve just inadvertently disinherited your kids, just because you didn\u2019t think about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are so many people that are already in that blended marriage\u2014maybe, they were widowed; maybe, they were divorced\u2014whatever the backstory is. They are already in that marriage, and they\u2019ve not done <em>any<\/em> planning around this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> They are just <em>assuming<\/em> everything works out in the end, and that turns out to be one of the most dangerous assumptions people can make. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, take death out of the equation. Let\u2019s say there is this blended family that has just formed; and it\u2019s a couple in their 60s. He had three kids, and she had four kids. He was pretty well off, and the woman he married was\u2014money was tight. Now, the three kids\u2014his three kids, who were expecting, \u201cWhen Dad dies, we\u2019re going to inherit some good money.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cand the business,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014or whatever is\/whatever the story is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Does this now get divvied up with her kids too? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Right! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Is the rule that he leaves everything to <em>her<\/em>?\u2014or wait a minute? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And imagine how disgruntled <em>his<\/em> kids are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Exactly! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, we just sat at a dinner table with the disgruntled daughter; remember? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I mean, she just\/she just shared\u2014and she is a wonderful, Christian woman\u2014and she\u2019s like: \u201cThis is really hard. The money we thought we were going to get is now going to our stepmom and her kids.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> You know what? Here is the immediate question; because sometimes the\u2014on the surface, that sounds like, \u201cOh, she\u2019s greedy,\u201d\u2014but wait a minute. Money is never about, really, about what\u2019s above the surface; it\u2019s often about what\u2019s below the surface\u2014so: \u201cWhat could be going on in her heart?\u201d Is this about: \u201cI\u2019m greedy\u201d?\u2014or is this about: \u201cI don\u2019t feel honored. I don\u2019t feel cared for\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m beginning to think that Mom or Dad\u201d\u2014or whatever the scenario is\u2014\u201cis more thoughtful about their new spouse than about us, as their children. If there were ever a time back, when Mom and Dad divorced\u2014when I was ten,\u201d or \u201c\u2026twenty,\u201d or \u201c\u2026four\u201d\u2014\u201cand I felt uncared for then\u2014<em>this<\/em> now reminds me that I\u2019ve never quite felt cared for, all along.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It\u2019s almost like <em>evidence<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> It\u2019s evidence; right. It\u2019s raw, all of a sudden; then she is really disgruntled. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Money is <em>always<\/em> emotional. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> It is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> There is no way to get around it; so now, you are really driving at some hurt emotions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, and anytime we\u2019ve had you here, we\u2019ve talked about the relational tensions that happen in a marriage relationship and a stepfamily relationship. Those are very real. Take money completely off the table, there is still a whole bunch to deal with in terms of loyalty, and past baggage, and all of the things we\u2019ve talked about before; but again, now, you throw money into the mix, and you\u2019ve just added a nuclear device that I\u2019m thinking, \u201cThis can take the best laid plans of a blended family and sabotage it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Let me tell you how passionate I\u2019ve got about this. At our last Summit on Stepfamily Ministry, Greg, David, and I did what we call \u201cSummit Immerse.\u201d We did a three-hour workshop on the themes out of this book. I made this statement\u2014and I\u2019ve never said this before\u2014but I\u2019m saying it, again, now on the air: \u201cI think pastors have a <em>moral<\/em> obligation to force\u201d\u2014if I could use that word\u2014\u201ccouples, who are in blended situations, or dating\/considering become a blended family\u2014we have a moral obligation to ask them\/to help them to ask these questions to plan, plan, plan,\u201d\u2014because this unintended disinheritance phenomenon is sad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we\u2019re called to care for our children. What does 1Timothy say?\u2014\u201cIf a man doesn\u2019t care for his family\/if he is not stewarding and providing for\u201d\u2014well, if you just assume\u2014\u201cHoney, I love you; and you love me,\u201d and with the best of intentions, you just assume it\u2019s all going to work out\u2014the odds are things are going to go awry at some point\u2014maybe, after you\u2019re gone; and your widow is trying to deal with your children\/her stepchildren\u2014that\u2019s when it all hits. You really have to do some careful thought and planning around this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; there is a word for what you are describing, and the word is na\u00efve. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This issue is going to come up, either before you get married or after you get married. The question is: \u201cWhere is the best place for it to come up?\u201d The answer is: \u201cBefore you get married\u201d; because after you get married, you want these things settled so you can get on with the business of forming a new relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> You know, there are just so many interesting things that I learned. Did you know, for example, if you are a widow\u2014and let\u2019s say you\u2019re under the age of 60\u2014your spouse died young in life, and you\u2019ve been getting social security benefits\u2014spousal benefits. If you remarry before the age of 60, you lose your benefits; but if you remarry <em>after<\/em> the age of 60, you <em>keep<\/em> all of your prior benefits as well as gain possible\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014new benefits. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014future benefits. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDid you know that, if you are divorced from somebody, your former spouse can claim benefits\/social security benefits on <em>you<\/em>, long after you\u2019re divorced? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No; I had no idea. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes; you don\u2019t actually have to even know about it; the government is not going to tell you about it. It doesn\u2019t affect <em>your<\/em> social security benefits or any new spouse you might have\u2014<em>their<\/em> potential benefits\u2014but a former spouse can make that claim. Sometimes, people are leaving money on the table\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014and didn\u2019t even realize that they could do it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> So what are couples doing? Are they\u2014I mean, I know a couple, going into their first marriage, <em>rarely<\/em> talk about money. Then they get in it and like, \u201cOh my goodness!\u201d Are couples going into a blended family even thinking? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> No; they are not! I think the assumption is: \u201cI love you; you love me. We\u2019re going to be a happy family. [Laughter] Somehow, it will all work out. I trust you to care for my kids; you trust me to care for yours.\u201d I <em>love<\/em> those intentions; we want to build on those intentions in this book. <em>Smart Stepfamily Guide to Financial Planning<\/em> helps you put together what we call a \u201cTogetherness Agreement\u201d; so that, those intentions actually become fulfilled. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you just <em>assume<\/em> that the money is going to flow to your spouse who, then, flow to your children after the stepparent passes away\u2014or what have you\u2014that\u2019s not going to happen; but you can <em>make<\/em> it happen\u2014that\u2019s the really cool thing in all of this. I learned\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> What is this Togetherness Agreement? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> This Togetherness Agreement allows you to do that. It functions, basically, like a will. It basically says: \u201cHey, here is what we intend to do to provide care and provision for one another: for my spouse, for my children, before I die\/after I die. We are going to have life insurance go here, and the estate is going to go here. The family business is going to go to this child, because they are invested in the family business; nobody else seems to care about that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn other words, it allows you to talk through and decide together\u2014see, there is the togetherness piece\u2014about how you are going to help money foster your family-ness, not inadvertently divide it up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019m guessing a low percentage of couples are doing this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> I don\u2019t think anybody is doing it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Because we are just introducing the concept. And you know what? One of the big myths, I think, about money is\u2014people say, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t have enough to\u2026\u201d \u201cWe don\u2019t have an estate. I don\u2019t own much; we don\u2019t need to do this.\u201d No; that\u2019s <em>wrong<\/em>. You have something; and even if it\u2019s Grandma\u2019s dishes that got handed down to you, your kids are probably invested in where those end up. It\u2019s not just about the <em>amount<\/em> of the value of those things; it is about the emotional <em>connection<\/em>, as Dave said earlier, that we have to those things, and what they mean to us, and <em>how<\/em> this demonstrates <em>value of one another. <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I hear the kinds of complications that we\u2019ve been talking about here; and I am instantly overwhelmed to the point that I\u2019m thinking, \u201cCouples, who were happy and pursuing a life together, all of a sudden, they are not sure they can make this work because of the complications.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Well, there is kind of a collective denial. You said, \u201cNa\u00efve,\u201d earlier; and I\u2019ll just say, \u201cDenial.\u201d I think a lot of couples <em>don\u2019t<\/em> talk about this because they have this sense that it might bring up some conflict: \u201cWell, let\u2019s just not go there if we don\u2019t have to. We\u2019re happy today. Why would we want to mess that up by talking about money?\u201d Yet, if you don\u2019t, I think you push off inevitable disagreements or potential conflicts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, we\u2019ve talked before, on this program, about stepfamily relationship can bond and have great depth; but until they get there, they tend to be fairly fragile. It doesn\u2019t take much for somebody to go: \u201cOh man! Okay; forget it. I\u2019m not even going to try in this relationship anymore.\u201d When you throw in a little conflict around money, all of a sudden, that can destroy a relationship that was somewhat fragile. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Bob, we\u2019ve run into people that have literally said: \u201cAlright, honey, this is our plan. This is how we are going to manage things. Let\u2019s not tell the kids; I\u2019ll let you tell my kids this was my decision after I\u2019m gone.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh man! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You\u2019ve really had that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Wow! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> It\u2019s like, \u201cOkay; what\u2019s below the surface <em>there<\/em>?\u201d This is a guy, who is <em>afraid<\/em> to set boundaries with his kids, to say: \u201cLook, this is what\u2019s happening\u2026. This is what\u2019s not happening\u2026\u201d\u2014and then to deal with any potential response from their children. They\u2019re throwing that off on their new spouse to\u2014no! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And that gets at really a value about money. You say in your book, that most conflicts are not, really, about money; they are about the values underlying it. Get into that a little bit, because that\u2019s really what going on there; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It\u2019s not just about dollars. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Can I just set the record straight; alright? Every time you hear, \u201cMoney is the number one cause of divorce,\u201d\u2014every time you hear that or see that in an article, it is not true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Right?\u2014it is not true. What is <em>true<\/em> is what\u2019s underneath money; that\u2019s what creates conflict; right?\u2014because money makes a statement about what you value or who you value; and how you handle money tells somebody whether you are selfish or not. It tells somebody whether you are really mindful of them or somebody else. \u201cDo you really care for us?\u201d\u2014those are the statements money makes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd blended families\u2014then you have these added things of: \u201cSo do I really belong in this family?\u201d \u201cWho is your loyalty to? Is your ultimate loyalty to your children, or are you providing for me\u201d; right? There are power issues in money\u2014who gets to spend money\/who doesn\u2019t get to spend it, without asking permission. There are control issues in money; there are acceptance issues: \u201cIt seems to me more money is spent on your children than is spent on my children. Do you not accept my children?\u201d\u2014it\u2019s what money <em>means<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> <em>That\u2019s<\/em> the stuff we fight about and argue about, and that\u2019s what ruins relationships. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have recommended your <em>Smart Stepfamily<\/em> book\u2014I don\u2019t know how many times\u2014to how many people. In fact, almost anytime I meet couples, who are in a blended family, I say, \u201cHave you read <em>The Smart Stepfamily<\/em>?\u2014because that will help you in <em>so many<\/em> areas.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf I had a number two book to recommend, I think it\u2019s probably this new book; because of the level of complexity. Part of me says, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to read this <em>before<\/em> you get remarried\/<em>before<\/em> you form a blended family.\u201d I\u2019m wondering how this works with couples, who are two years in, and the blended family has already been formed. It\u2019s like: \u201cI\u2019m not sure we want to crack open this book because now, all of a sudden, we may come up with a bunch of disagreements. [Laughter] Then we go through a tough season in our newly-formed blended marriage, which is already having some challenges.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes; so let me talk about the below-the-surface stuff there, and then come back to the above-the-surface. Below the surface: the insecurity you feel around this subject ought to be telling you something. I\u2019m not exactly sure what that means, but it is trying to tell you something; so listen to that part of you, that\u2019s going, \u201cI don\u2019t want to go there.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWell, why not? What\u2019s the fear? What\u2019s the concern?\u201d \u201cIf we go there, it might send the wrong message.\u201d \u201cYes; you\u2019re right. You need to communicate <em>clearly<\/em> about what it means and what it <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em> mean\u2014about what your decisions are going to indicate about your values.\u201d Maybe, that insecurity is: \u201cI\u2019m not sure how others feel about me, or my place in the family.\u201d So you\u2019re really asking a family-merger question: \u201cHow far along have we come in this new blended family?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Those<\/em> are important; and we say in the book, \u201cWhen you find those below-the-surface issues, you need to attend to those first.\u201d That\u2019s the <em>first<\/em> conversation\u2014is: \u201cHoney, do you feel insecure in our marriage?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Ron, what happens if you, as a spouse, are thinking: \u201cThis is really important. I want to read this book together; I want to go through this,\u201d and the other spouse has no interest?\u2014they don\u2019t want to talk about it. What should the one, who is wanting to do this\u2014what\u2019s their role? What should they do? <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> I want you to get curious about what\u2019s below the surface\u2014<em>not critical<\/em>: \u201cHey, come on! We got to get into\u2026\u201d\u2014no; no; no. \u201cSo, tell me; what\u2019s holding you up around this conversation? What concerns do you have about it?\u201d Go below the surface; try to help <em>them<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSometimes, the other\/your partner doesn\u2019t even <em>know<\/em> what their insecurity or fear is. You gently ask and try to draw it up so that you, together, can deal with that first. Only when you get passed that, can you then go above the surface and go, \u201cAlright; what\u2019s a good plan for our money?\u201d It\u2019s kind of like, once you do the hard work of below-the-surface,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014the above-the-surface stuff just becomes a function of making some decisions\/finding out the financial options that you have available. Just a quick sidebar: the financial world has some <em>cool<\/em> stuff that allows you to find creative solutions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf I could just share one\u2014this is my <em>favorite<\/em>\u2014I have learned <em>so much<\/em> in the writing of this book. QTIP\u2014have you ever heard of a QTIP? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014to clean my ears? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> No! [Laughter] Qualified Terminal Interest Property Trust. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh, of course! Yes, we\u2019ve heard of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes, yes, yes. Did you know?\u2014back to that original question we started with: \u201cWhat if my assets go to my widow and, then, to <em>their<\/em> widow and to <em>their<\/em> kids?\u201d Did you know a QTIP is something you can establish that says, \u201cWhen I die, all of the assets go to my spouse; when they die, these assets go to these children: this child, this child, this child, my stepchildren\u201d? Everybody is provided for. From your grave, you can dictate where your assets go. It\u2019s <em>awesome<\/em>; it provides for everybody. Everybody feels affirmed; everybody feels valued and cared for, and it\u2019s all set up ahead of time. You don\u2019t have to <em>hope<\/em> that it all works out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Will an average financial planner or an average estate attorney be able\u2014will they\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014know these issues\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> They will. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014for blended families? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> I\u2019m glad you asked. Yes; they will know what a QTIP is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> They don\u2019t necessarily know the below-the-surface issues. One of our goals in writing this book\u2014and we\u2019ve already started getting feedback from this\u2014I had an estate attorney tell me, \u201cI\u2019ve spent 40 years helping people plan their estates, and I\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> thought about the relational matters going on below the surface\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Really? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cuntil I read this book.\u201d We\u2019re helping financial planners and attorneys understand relationship dynamics. We\u2019re helping couples understand both of those things; in particular, what\u2019s above the surface in the financial world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here is kind of how I feel. I feel like I\u2019m saying, \u201cEverybody should have this book. It\u2019s kind of like, \u2018Everybody should have a pet snake at their house.\u2019\u201d [Laughter] I\u2019m sorry; I don\u2019t mean\u2014you know what I\u2019m saying?! It\u2019s: \u201cYou need this book, and this is medicine,\u201d\u2014maybe, not a pet snake\u2014\u201cYou need a shot; you need to go get an immunization,\u201d and \u201cYes, it\u2019s going to sting maybe for a little bit; but this is about your health, as a family, going forward.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> And if your mother is widowed, and she is <em>seeing<\/em> a guy\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014they need this book! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh my goodness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u201c<em>You<\/em> need this book.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> If you are a pastor, a ministry leader\/a marriage ministry leader, and you\u2019re helping couples doing premarital counseling, you <em>need<\/em> this because it\u2019s going to help <em>you<\/em> ask better questions and help <em>them<\/em> move into a space that they\u2019re probably, naturally, not going to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And it\u2019s also going to help you <em>talk<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014about this issue; because it\u2019s one of those issues, like, \u201cIf I don\u2019t talk about it, I don\u2019t need to think about it.\u201d This book will say, \u201cNot only are we going to read it, we\u2019re going to have communication; and it\u2019s going to change everything\u201d; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And bringing up underlying issues can be scary, but it can be a good thing that can bring healing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got a friend, who is a financial planner; and I\u2019m going to send a copy of this to <em>him<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got two brothers, and I\u2019ve already sent them a copy. In fact, there is a term\u2014it\u2019s called asset drift and unintended disinheritance\u2014you\u2019ve just inadvertently disinherited your kids, just because you didn\u2019t think about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are so many people that are already in that blended marriage\u2014maybe, they were widowed; maybe, they were divorced\u2014whatever the backstory is. They are already in that marriage, and they\u2019ve not done <em>any<\/em> planning around this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> They are just <em>assuming<\/em> everything works out in the end, and that turns out to be one of the most dangerous assumptions people can make. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, take death out of the equation. Let\u2019s say there is this blended family that has just formed; and it\u2019s a couple in their 60s. He had three kids, and she had four kids. He was pretty well off, and the woman he married was\u2014money was tight. Now, the three kids\u2014his three kids, who were expecting, \u201cWhen Dad dies, we\u2019re going to inherit some good money.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cand the business,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014or whatever is\/whatever the story is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Does this now get divvied up with her kids too? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Right! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Is the rule that he leaves everything to <em>her<\/em>?\u2014or wait a minute? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And imagine how disgruntled <em>his<\/em> kids are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Exactly! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, we just sat at a dinner table with the disgruntled daughter; remember? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I mean, she just\/she just shared\u2014and she is a wonderful, Christian woman\u2014and she\u2019s like: \u201cThis is really hard. The money we thought we were going to get is now going to our stepmom and her kids.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> You know what? Here is the immediate question; because sometimes the\u2014on the surface, that sounds like, \u201cOh, she\u2019s greedy,\u201d\u2014but wait a minute. Money is never about, really, about what\u2019s above the surface; it\u2019s often about what\u2019s below the surface\u2014so: \u201cWhat could be going on in her heart?\u201d Is this about: \u201cI\u2019m greedy\u201d?\u2014or is this about: \u201cI don\u2019t feel honored. I don\u2019t feel cared for\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m beginning to think that Mom or Dad\u201d\u2014or whatever the scenario is\u2014\u201cis more thoughtful about their new spouse than about us, as their children. If there were ever a time back, when Mom and Dad divorced\u2014when I was ten,\u201d or \u201c\u2026twenty,\u201d or \u201c\u2026four\u201d\u2014\u201cand I felt uncared for then\u2014<em>this<\/em> now reminds me that I\u2019ve never quite felt cared for, all along.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It\u2019s almost like <em>evidence<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> It\u2019s evidence; right. It\u2019s raw, all of a sudden; then she is really disgruntled. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Money is <em>always<\/em> emotional. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> It is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> There is no way to get around it; so now, you are really driving at some hurt emotions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, and anytime we\u2019ve had you here, we\u2019ve talked about the relational tensions that happen in a marriage relationship and a stepfamily relationship. Those are very real. Take money completely off the table, there is still a whole bunch to deal with in terms of loyalty, and past baggage, and all of the things we\u2019ve talked about before; but again, now, you throw money into the mix, and you\u2019ve just added a nuclear device that I\u2019m thinking, \u201cThis can take the best laid plans of a blended family and sabotage it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Let me tell you how passionate I\u2019ve got about this. At our last Summit on Stepfamily Ministry, Greg, David, and I did what we call \u201cSummit Immerse.\u201d We did a three-hour workshop on the themes out of this book. I made this statement\u2014and I\u2019ve never said this before\u2014but I\u2019m saying it, again, now on the air: \u201cI think pastors have a <em>moral<\/em> obligation to force\u201d\u2014if I could use that word\u2014\u201ccouples, who are in blended situations, or dating\/considering become a blended family\u2014we have a moral obligation to ask them\/to help them to ask these questions to plan, plan, plan,\u201d\u2014because this unintended disinheritance phenomenon is sad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we\u2019re called to care for our children. What does 1Timothy say?\u2014\u201cIf a man doesn\u2019t care for his family\/if he is not stewarding and providing for\u201d\u2014well, if you just assume\u2014\u201cHoney, I love you; and you love me,\u201d and with the best of intentions, you just assume it\u2019s all going to work out\u2014the odds are things are going to go awry at some point\u2014maybe, after you\u2019re gone; and your widow is trying to deal with your children\/her stepchildren\u2014that\u2019s when it all hits. You really have to do some careful thought and planning around this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; there is a word for what you are describing, and the word is na\u00efve. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This issue is going to come up, either before you get married or after you get married. The question is: \u201cWhere is the best place for it to come up?\u201d The answer is: \u201cBefore you get married\u201d; because after you get married, you want these things settled so you can get on with the business of forming a new relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> You know, there are just so many interesting things that I learned. Did you know, for example, if you are a widow\u2014and let\u2019s say you\u2019re under the age of 60\u2014your spouse died young in life, and you\u2019ve been getting social security benefits\u2014spousal benefits. If you remarry before the age of 60, you lose your benefits; but if you remarry <em>after<\/em> the age of 60, you <em>keep<\/em> all of your prior benefits as well as gain possible\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014new benefits. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014future benefits. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDid you know that, if you are divorced from somebody, your former spouse can claim benefits\/social security benefits on <em>you<\/em>, long after you\u2019re divorced? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No; I had no idea. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes; you don\u2019t actually have to even know about it; the government is not going to tell you about it. It doesn\u2019t affect <em>your<\/em> social security benefits or any new spouse you might have\u2014<em>their<\/em> potential benefits\u2014but a former spouse can make that claim. Sometimes, people are leaving money on the table\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014and didn\u2019t even realize that they could do it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> So what are couples doing? Are they\u2014I mean, I know a couple, going into their first marriage, <em>rarely<\/em> talk about money. Then they get in it and like, \u201cOh my goodness!\u201d Are couples going into a blended family even thinking? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> No; they are not! I think the assumption is: \u201cI love you; you love me. We\u2019re going to be a happy family. [Laughter] Somehow, it will all work out. I trust you to care for my kids; you trust me to care for yours.\u201d I <em>love<\/em> those intentions; we want to build on those intentions in this book. <em>Smart Stepfamily Guide to Financial Planning<\/em> helps you put together what we call a \u201cTogetherness Agreement\u201d; so that, those intentions actually become fulfilled. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you just <em>assume<\/em> that the money is going to flow to your spouse who, then, flow to your children after the stepparent passes away\u2014or what have you\u2014that\u2019s not going to happen; but you can <em>make<\/em> it happen\u2014that\u2019s the really cool thing in all of this. I learned\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> What is this Togetherness Agreement? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> This Togetherness Agreement allows you to do that. It functions, basically, like a will. It basically says: \u201cHey, here is what we intend to do to provide care and provision for one another: for my spouse, for my children, before I die\/after I die. We are going to have life insurance go here, and the estate is going to go here. The family business is going to go to this child, because they are invested in the family business; nobody else seems to care about that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn other words, it allows you to talk through and decide together\u2014see, there is the togetherness piece\u2014about how you are going to help money foster your family-ness, not inadvertently divide it up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019m guessing a low percentage of couples are doing this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> I don\u2019t think anybody is doing it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Because we are just introducing the concept. And you know what? One of the big myths, I think, about money is\u2014people say, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t have enough to\u2026\u201d \u201cWe don\u2019t have an estate. I don\u2019t own much; we don\u2019t need to do this.\u201d No; that\u2019s <em>wrong<\/em>. You have something; and even if it\u2019s Grandma\u2019s dishes that got handed down to you, your kids are probably invested in where those end up. It\u2019s not just about the <em>amount<\/em> of the value of those things; it is about the emotional <em>connection<\/em>, as Dave said earlier, that we have to those things, and what they mean to us, and <em>how<\/em> this demonstrates <em>value of one another. <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I hear the kinds of complications that we\u2019ve been talking about here; and I am instantly overwhelmed to the point that I\u2019m thinking, \u201cCouples, who were happy and pursuing a life together, all of a sudden, they are not sure they can make this work because of the complications.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Well, there is kind of a collective denial. You said, \u201cNa\u00efve,\u201d earlier; and I\u2019ll just say, \u201cDenial.\u201d I think a lot of couples <em>don\u2019t<\/em> talk about this because they have this sense that it might bring up some conflict: \u201cWell, let\u2019s just not go there if we don\u2019t have to. We\u2019re happy today. Why would we want to mess that up by talking about money?\u201d Yet, if you don\u2019t, I think you push off inevitable disagreements or potential conflicts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, we\u2019ve talked before, on this program, about stepfamily relationship can bond and have great depth; but until they get there, they tend to be fairly fragile. It doesn\u2019t take much for somebody to go: \u201cOh man! Okay; forget it. I\u2019m not even going to try in this relationship anymore.\u201d When you throw in a little conflict around money, all of a sudden, that can destroy a relationship that was somewhat fragile. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Bob, we\u2019ve run into people that have literally said: \u201cAlright, honey, this is our plan. This is how we are going to manage things. Let\u2019s not tell the kids; I\u2019ll let you tell my kids this was my decision after I\u2019m gone.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh man! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You\u2019ve really had that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Wow! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> It\u2019s like, \u201cOkay; what\u2019s below the surface <em>there<\/em>?\u201d This is a guy, who is <em>afraid<\/em> to set boundaries with his kids, to say: \u201cLook, this is what\u2019s happening\u2026. This is what\u2019s not happening\u2026\u201d\u2014and then to deal with any potential response from their children. They\u2019re throwing that off on their new spouse to\u2014no! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And that gets at really a value about money. You say in your book, that most conflicts are not, really, about money; they are about the values underlying it. Get into that a little bit, because that\u2019s really what going on there; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It\u2019s not just about dollars. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Can I just set the record straight; alright? Every time you hear, \u201cMoney is the number one cause of divorce,\u201d\u2014every time you hear that or see that in an article, it is not true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Right?\u2014it is not true. What is <em>true<\/em> is what\u2019s underneath money; that\u2019s what creates conflict; right?\u2014because money makes a statement about what you value or who you value; and how you handle money tells somebody whether you are selfish or not. It tells somebody whether you are really mindful of them or somebody else. \u201cDo you really care for us?\u201d\u2014those are the statements money makes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd blended families\u2014then you have these added things of: \u201cSo do I really belong in this family?\u201d \u201cWho is your loyalty to? Is your ultimate loyalty to your children, or are you providing for me\u201d; right? There are power issues in money\u2014who gets to spend money\/who doesn\u2019t get to spend it, without asking permission. There are control issues in money; there are acceptance issues: \u201cIt seems to me more money is spent on your children than is spent on my children. Do you not accept my children?\u201d\u2014it\u2019s what money <em>means<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> <em>That\u2019s<\/em> the stuff we fight about and argue about, and that\u2019s what ruins relationships. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have recommended your <em>Smart Stepfamily<\/em> book\u2014I don\u2019t know how many times\u2014to how many people. In fact, almost anytime I meet couples, who are in a blended family, I say, \u201cHave you read <em>The Smart Stepfamily<\/em>?\u2014because that will help you in <em>so many<\/em> areas.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf I had a number two book to recommend, I think it\u2019s probably this new book; because of the level of complexity. Part of me says, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to read this <em>before<\/em> you get remarried\/<em>before<\/em> you form a blended family.\u201d I\u2019m wondering how this works with couples, who are two years in, and the blended family has already been formed. It\u2019s like: \u201cI\u2019m not sure we want to crack open this book because now, all of a sudden, we may come up with a bunch of disagreements. [Laughter] Then we go through a tough season in our newly-formed blended marriage, which is already having some challenges.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes; so let me talk about the below-the-surface stuff there, and then come back to the above-the-surface. Below the surface: the insecurity you feel around this subject ought to be telling you something. I\u2019m not exactly sure what that means, but it is trying to tell you something; so listen to that part of you, that\u2019s going, \u201cI don\u2019t want to go there.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWell, why not? What\u2019s the fear? What\u2019s the concern?\u201d \u201cIf we go there, it might send the wrong message.\u201d \u201cYes; you\u2019re right. You need to communicate <em>clearly<\/em> about what it means and what it <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em> mean\u2014about what your decisions are going to indicate about your values.\u201d Maybe, that insecurity is: \u201cI\u2019m not sure how others feel about me, or my place in the family.\u201d So you\u2019re really asking a family-merger question: \u201cHow far along have we come in this new blended family?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Those<\/em> are important; and we say in the book, \u201cWhen you find those below-the-surface issues, you need to attend to those first.\u201d That\u2019s the <em>first<\/em> conversation\u2014is: \u201cHoney, do you feel insecure in our marriage?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Ron, what happens if you, as a spouse, are thinking: \u201cThis is really important. I want to read this book together; I want to go through this,\u201d and the other spouse has no interest?\u2014they don\u2019t want to talk about it. What should the one, who is wanting to do this\u2014what\u2019s their role? What should they do? <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> I want you to get curious about what\u2019s below the surface\u2014<em>not critical<\/em>: \u201cHey, come on! We got to get into\u2026\u201d\u2014no; no; no. \u201cSo, tell me; what\u2019s holding you up around this conversation? What concerns do you have about it?\u201d Go below the surface; try to help <em>them<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSometimes, the other\/your partner doesn\u2019t even <em>know<\/em> what their insecurity or fear is. You gently ask and try to draw it up so that you, together, can deal with that first. Only when you get passed that, can you then go above the surface and go, \u201cAlright; what\u2019s a good plan for our money?\u201d It\u2019s kind of like, once you do the hard work of below-the-surface,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014the above-the-surface stuff just becomes a function of making some decisions\/finding out the financial options that you have available. Just a quick sidebar: the financial world has some <em>cool<\/em> stuff that allows you to find creative solutions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf I could just share one\u2014this is my <em>favorite<\/em>\u2014I have learned <em>so much<\/em> in the writing of this book. QTIP\u2014have you ever heard of a QTIP? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014to clean my ears? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> No! [Laughter] Qualified Terminal Interest Property Trust. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh, of course! Yes, we\u2019ve heard of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes, yes, yes. Did you know?\u2014back to that original question we started with: \u201cWhat if my assets go to my widow and, then, to <em>their<\/em> widow and to <em>their<\/em> kids?\u201d Did you know a QTIP is something you can establish that says, \u201cWhen I die, all of the assets go to my spouse; when they die, these assets go to these children: this child, this child, this child, my stepchildren\u201d? Everybody is provided for. From your grave, you can dictate where your assets go. It\u2019s <em>awesome<\/em>; it provides for everybody. Everybody feels affirmed; everybody feels valued and cared for, and it\u2019s all set up ahead of time. You don\u2019t have to <em>hope<\/em> that it all works out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Will an average financial planner or an average estate attorney be able\u2014will they\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014know these issues\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> They will. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014for blended families? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> I\u2019m glad you asked. Yes; they will know what a QTIP is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> They don\u2019t necessarily know the below-the-surface issues. One of our goals in writing this book\u2014and we\u2019ve already started getting feedback from this\u2014I had an estate attorney tell me, \u201cI\u2019ve spent 40 years helping people plan their estates, and I\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> thought about the relational matters going on below the surface\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Really? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cuntil I read this book.\u201d We\u2019re helping financial planners and attorneys understand relationship dynamics. We\u2019re helping couples understand both of those things; in particular, what\u2019s above the surface in the financial world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here is kind of how I feel. I feel like I\u2019m saying, \u201cEverybody should have this book. It\u2019s kind of like, \u2018Everybody should have a pet snake at their house.\u2019\u201d [Laughter] I\u2019m sorry; I don\u2019t mean\u2014you know what I\u2019m saying?! It\u2019s: \u201cYou need this book, and this is medicine,\u201d\u2014maybe, not a pet snake\u2014\u201cYou need a shot; you need to go get an immunization,\u201d and \u201cYes, it\u2019s going to sting maybe for a little bit; but this is about your health, as a family, going forward.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> And if your mother is widowed, and she is <em>seeing<\/em> a guy\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014they need this book! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh my goodness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u201c<em>You<\/em> need this book.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> If you are a pastor, a ministry leader\/a marriage ministry leader, and you\u2019re helping couples doing premarital counseling, you <em>need<\/em> this because it\u2019s going to help <em>you<\/em> ask better questions and help <em>them<\/em> move into a space that they\u2019re probably, naturally, not going to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And it\u2019s also going to help you <em>talk<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014about this issue; because it\u2019s one of those issues, like, \u201cIf I don\u2019t talk about it, I don\u2019t need to think about it.\u201d This book will say, \u201cNot only are we going to read it, we\u2019re going to have communication; and it\u2019s going to change everything\u201d; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And bringing up underlying issues can be scary, but it can be a good thing that can bring healing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got a friend, who is a financial planner; and I\u2019m going to send a copy of this to <em>him<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got two brothers, and I\u2019ve already sent them a copy.
