And voila!\u2014it happened again. I was really angry with God. I could not understand why God was asking my family to go through this again; and it took me a while to work through that. I couldn\u2019t sing praise songs; I couldn\u2019t pray; I didn\u2019t want to go to church; I did, but I didn\u2019t want to go; I would go, and I just felt like I was just there. I didn\u2019t really participate or worship the Lord.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, January 9<sup>th<\/sup>. Our hosts are Dave and Ann Wilson; I'm Bob Lepine. We\u2019re going to hear today about the very difficult path that God put Tony and Kelly Trent on with their son, Tyler, and about the upset that the whole family was praying for. Stay with us.\n\nAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. You know, I think all of us can remember times in the last 20\/30 years when, in professional sports and college sports, there have been moments, where athletes\/coaches: all of a sudden, God gets put on display.\n\nI\u2019m thinking about Tim Tebow\u2019s eye-black, and the verses he would put on there, or about\u2014I go all the way back to the greatest comeback in NFL history, when Frank Wright, as the substitute quarterback, and after he had led this comeback\u2014and afterwards they said, \u201cTell us about the comeback.\u201d He said, \u201cMy source of strength is Christ alone.\u201d\n\nWe\u2019ve all seen those moments; and at home, we\u2019re cheering; right?\u2014when in the glory of a sporting event, somebody says, \u201cThere is something much bigger going on here.\u201d That\u2019s pretty exciting; isn\u2019t it?\u201d\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You know, Bob, when you bring that up, I was never sitting at home watching those games. I was always on a sideline; and that\u2019s exactly what happened when Mike Utley got paralyzed\/when Reggie Brown got paralyzed. In the Silverdome, the entire stadium goes hush. I\u2019m on the field, praying for a man to be able to walk again. You look up, and the entire stadium is praying\u2014agnostics\/atheists are praying!\n\nIn one second, you realize: \u201cThis is a game. What\u2019s happened here is life and death,\u201d\u2014it is so much more important; and there is a belief in a God, who is control of both of those hanging in the balance. That\u2019s one of the things that I love about sport\u2014is it can transcend almost anything and take people\u2019s lives to something that really matters.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There was a Saturday in 2018 when\u2014it was one of those moments, as folks were settling in to watch a college football game, and all of a sudden, we got a story shared with us about one of the biggest fans that the Purdue Boilermaker football team has ever had\u2014a guy named Tyler Trent. We\u2019re going to hear that story and meet Tyler\u2019s parents, who are joining us today.\n\nTony and Kelly Trent, welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, guys.\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Thanks for having us. It\u2019s a real honor and a privilege to be here.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Yes; thank you.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Your journey\u2014hard journey\u2014that God has had you on over the last\u2014it\u2019s been a five-year\/six-year journey for you?\u2014\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014a journey that, looking back, you would have prayed for it to resolve itself differently. Yet, God did some amazing things through the short life of your son, Tyler. Introduce us to Tyler as a kid, growing up. He was smart; he was\u2014what was his nickname? What did they call him?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Smiley.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Smiley.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Everybody liked Tyler; didn\u2019t they?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Yes. So, Tyler is our firstborn. He was a really easy kid\u2014such a <em>joy<\/em> to parent. In 9<sup>th<\/sup> grade, I had two teachers come to me and say: \u201cI can\u2019t wait to see what Tyler does. He\u2019s made for big things.\u201d I\u2019m just thinking, \u201cHe\u2019s just our child; he\u2019s just normal to me.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> But he was a <em>joy<\/em>.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He was really on top\u2014read books a lot and could pull arcane facts from almost anywhere; right?\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Yes; he had an incredibly gifted mind. Usually, when kids are really intellectually smart, they can\u2019t either communicate verbally or written; and he could do both. He had a real mind for statistics and analytical things and read lots of books. I mean, he told me one time that he thought he read a hundred books a the summer. I think it was a little exaggerated. [Laughter] He was listening to podcasts or books <em>all <\/em>the time\n\nJust to add to what Kelly was sharing\u2014he was, from a young age\u2014you could just tell there was something special about Tyler in that\u2014he always wanted to hang out with adults and always wanted to be a part of adult conversations. We\u2019d encourage him: \u201cHey, Tyler, go play with your friends.\u201d He just wanted to sit around the dinner table and have conversations with adults. I think, to some degree, he thought it was a little juvenile to do the things that the kids were doing; and he was thinking at a higher capacity, if you will\u2014accepted Jesus at a young age and would do quiet times at a young age. It was just something extraordinary for sure.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yet, you know, he wants to be with adults because he is mature; but he\u2019s really\u2014all the kids loved him; right?\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Oh, yes; he had a gift of leadership. I told him\u2014I said, \u201cTyler, you\u2019re another Billy Graham; your story looks different.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here is something you don\u2019t hear often: A kid who reads a hundred books a summer also loves football. [Laughter] I mean, those don\u2019t typically go together.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> No.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s either one or the other. When did you recognize he first loved football?\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> When he was a little kid.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Day one. [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> He loved all sports; you know? He loved basketball, too; but\u2014\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I don\u2019t mean to be disrespectful at all; but you live in Indiana, and basketball is big in Indiana. [Laughter] How did Tyler become a <em>Purdue<\/em> football fan?\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Like I said, he loved all sports; and he actually was a writer for the campus newspaper called the<em> Purdue Exponent<\/em>. I think it was\u2014the timing of his sickness\u2014I tell people: \u201cIt was like Purdue football wasn\u2019t great. We just had a new coach, Coach Brohm, that year; and Tyler needed Purdue football, and Purdue football needed Tyler.\u201d\n\nOne thing about Tyler\u2019s personality was that, when he committed to something, he was <em>all in<\/em>. There was nothing you\u2019re going to do to stop him. When he committed to Purdue, he was all-in being a Purdue fan.\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Talk to us and tell us about the time the diagnosis came. What happened?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> So, Tyler always had plans\u2014like he was always\u2014like he had something coming, whether it was leadership camp, or missions\u2019 trips, or whatever it was; and that summer, he was having problems shooting the basketball.\n\nWe went home to Tony\u2019s parents for the Fourth of July, which we always did. My sister-in-law said, \u201cSomething is wrong with Tyler.\u201d I was like, \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d She\u2019s like, \u201cHe is so thin.\u201d I\u2019m thinking, \u201cPuberty,\u201d\u2014like I didn\u2019t even\u2014it didn\u2019t register with me.\n\nI told him\u2014that was July 4<sup>th<\/sup>, and he had a trip the next day. I said, \u201cNo matter what time you get home that night, we are going to the doctor the next morning.\u201d We did, and we went to a walk-in sports clinic. He came back from his x-ray and said, \u201cI heard the nurse say, \u2018This isn\u2019t good.\u2019\u201d Then the doctor walked in; and he is like shaking his head and looking at the scan, and circling it; you know? He\u2019s like, \u201cThis shouldn\u2019t be here.\u201d Within\u2014what?\u2014six hours, he was diagnosed.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was the diagnosis, Tony?\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> It was osteosarcoma, which is bone cancer. You know, it\u2019s one of those situations, where our family was healthy. We\u2019re really active; we went hiking and biking, and had all kinds of fun things, and never was unhealthy. You never dreamt that something like this would happen.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m a default optimist. I would hear something like this; and I would think: \u201cOkay; there may be chemo\/radiation, but this\u2014we\u2019ll figure out how to do this. Medical science is good; they can do these kinds of things.\u201d Is that where <em>you<\/em> were?\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Yes; first of all, we was just trying to grasp what it meant for a kid to have cancer.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> I remember the moment, where I was at. Kelly calls me and says, \u201cThe doctors are saying Tyler has cancer.\u201d I\u2019ll never forget looking at Kelly\u2019s face. She pulled up in the driveway, and I hugged her. Yes; it\u2019s\u2014it\u2019s\u2014it\u2019s forever ingrained in my mind. Then you just try to understand and work through: \u201cHow do you tell your family that your child has cancer?\u201d\n\nWe took a couple days to pray about it and think about it, and God led me to Psalms 103. It says this\u2014it says:\n\nPraise the Lord, O my soul: and all my inmost being, praise His holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all His benefits, who forgives all of your sins and heals all of your diseases; who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion; who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle\u2019s.\n\nThe Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. He made known His ways to Moses, His deeds to the people of Israel.\n\nThe Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse: nor will He harbor His anger forever. He does not treat us as the sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed the transgressions from us.\n\nAs a father has compassion on His children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him. For He knows how we are formed; He remembers that we are dust.\n\nI\u2014after I completed reading that, I challenged my family\u2014not knowing that this is really what it would look like\u2014I challenged my family that, regardless of what happened, we would bring honor and glory to God\u2019s name. We look back on the journey\u2014it\u2019s been a journey that no parent would ever want to go through, but we still see God\u2019s goodness and grace and mercy in all of it.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How did Tyler process?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> So, the morning that we actually\/that Tony read that and we told him, he had been doing a quiet time. He was in Thessalonians 5:16-18, where it talks about \u201cRejoice always; pray continually; give thanks in all things.\u201d He literally looked at us and said, \u201cWell, I think I was meant to be reading this this morning. Like, this is for me.\u201d\n\nHowever, while I think he started off <em>really<\/em> strong\u2014and we had <em>amazing<\/em> support from our church; we still do\u2014but about three or four months into it, he really started to struggle.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He is going through chemo at this point?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And\u2014\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Is chemo weekly, daily\u2014what?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Weekly.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> I probably spent more time in the hospital than I did at home. It was in-patient. Osteosarcoma\u2014they haven\u2019t had new treatment for over 35 years\u2014like there is one way to treat it. They say, \u201cIt\u2019s either successful, or it\u2019s not.\u201d We spent a lot of time in the hospital.\n\nI just think he was such a leader at school, and he had so many friends; so to be removed from all of that, for that much time, really got to him, mentally.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; you write in the book, where he\u2014\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> \u2014he was suicidal.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014got really depressed.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We have him describing what it was like during that time. Are you okay if we play\u2014\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014Tyler talking about it?\n\n[Previously Recorded]\n\n<strong>Tyler:<\/strong> You know, when I was first diagnosed, I was 15 years old. You know, I was very immature, I would say. I entered a state of depression\u2014of questioning God and asking the questions of: \u201cHey, am I ever going to be able to throw a football with my kid one day?\u201d\u2014because of the way osteosarcoma works is\u2014before they had any treatments, they\u2019d just amputate your arm; they\u2019d just get rid of the tumor. They had told me that; that\u2019s scary for a 15-year-old.\n\nThere was a lot of: \u201cAm I going to live? Am I going to die?\u201d I entered a state of deep depression because of that. Basically, I had to decide, in my mind, that I was either going to kill myself or the cancer was. I actually tried a couple of times and, by the grace of God, did not succeed.\n\n[Studio]\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Listening to him describe that, and hearing him say, \u201cI was pretty immature, at the time,\u201d I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYou sound <em>remarkably<\/em> mature for a 15-year-old young man, processing life-and-death issues.\u201d\n\nBut as parents\u2014when your son is discouraged and depressed, and thinking, \u201cWhat am I living for?\u201d\u2014Mary Ann and I said to each other, at one point, when we were raising our kids: \u201cI would rather <em>you<\/em> suffer than any of our kids suffer,\u201d\u2014not that you wish anything on anybody\u2014but \u201cI\u2019d rather <em>me<\/em> suffer first\/second <em>you<\/em>, before any of our kids have to suffer.\u201d For parents, to watch your kids go through this\u2014\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It\u2019s our greatest fear, and you were walking through, probably, your greatest fear.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s not natural.\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Yes; it was\u2014I told him, all the time\u2014I said, \u201cTyler, I would take this from you in a heartbeat.\u201d\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> He said, \u201cDad, you don\u2019t want it,\u201d\u2014just the kind of kid Tyler was. I mean, he was\u2014I mean, he always was trying to protect Kelly and [me].\n\nWhen you go through something like this, it\u2019s <em>extremely<\/em> difficult. I mean, it\u2019s\u2014I share all the time that: \u201cMy son had cancer. He had the physical cancer; but my family got cancer, too. It was like a bomb went off in my house in that\u2014there wasn\u2019t a big boom, and there wasn\u2019t shrapnel that came from the bomb\u2014but the shrapnel was dealing with life, and the sound is the crying of your family.\u201d\n\nHaving your child, Tyler, lying flat on the floor\u2014and crying and banging his foot or his hand on the floor; and the other boys\u2019 crying, and Kelly trying to help them\u2014and I\u2019m stuck with like being a deer [looking at headlights] in my eyes\u2014praying to God to help me to make\/to lead my family because I don\u2019t know what to do.\n\nIt\u2019s a hard journey that Kelly and I, and Tyler as well\u2014we don\u2019t want anybody else to have to go through with it; so part of the passion is to try to help find a cure.\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> So, your entire family is grieving\u2014Tyler is grieving; you guys are grieving; and you have two other sons. What was their response, and how did you deal with <em>that<\/em>?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Blake writes a chapter in the book\u2014it\u2019s called \u201cHarsh Realities.\u201d He went through a really, really hard time his 10<sup>th<\/sup> and 11<sup>th<\/sup> grade years. Ethan just likes to keep busy and distracted, and he doesn\u2019t want to think about it. So, yes, we\u2019re working through those things; but by the grace of God, Blake is thriving today; he is doing beautifully.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Kelly, do you think some of what had him spiral out\u2014I mean, certainly the grief and the trauma\u2014but Tyler is demanding all of your focus and attention; and here is a young man, in the middle of adolescence, and Mom and Dad have to be occupied elsewhere?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Well, right; and if you can imagine, I was homeschooling at the time. Ethan was in 4<sup>th<\/sup> grade; Blake was in 8<sup>th<\/sup>; Tyler was in 10<sup>th<\/sup>. I was hardly there\u2014I have beautiful friends that helped me, but it wasn\u2019t Mom.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They had to feel abandoned\u2014\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Right.\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014not that you had anything else you could be doing.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Oh, no. Yes\/no; I agree.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Can you tell us what your walk and your relationship with God was like as you were walking through this darkness?\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> So, the first time that Tyler got sick\u2014it was actually really good, I think. Kelly and I were working really well together. We had so many people praying for us. I tell people that I had an extraordinary experience with just the presence of the Lord in my heart and in my soul. It was really something I never experienced in my life before. It felt like, a little bit of, heaven to be honest with you. It was just a small glimpse of what heaven\u2014the peace of heaven might feel like.\n\nThe first time, it was good. We had gone through almost 18 months of remission, and life started to get back to normal again. And voila!\u2014it happened again, and I was really angry with God. I could not understand why God was asking my family to go through this again, and it took me a while to work through that. I couldn\u2019t sing praise songs; I couldn\u2019t pray; I didn\u2019t want to go to church; I did, but I didn\u2019t want to go; I would go, and I would just\u2014felt like I was just there. I didn\u2019t really participate or worship the Lord.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> At the same time, Tyler had almost a completely different perspective\u2014\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Yes; he did!\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014on the second occurrence than you had. In fact, we\u2019ve got a clip of him talking about what happened with him when he found out that his cancer was back.\n\n[Previously Recorded]\n\n<strong>Tyler:<\/strong> I was really hard on myself because I felt like I hadn\u2019t really used my story for the Lord\u2019s glory. I felt like I could have done more with my cancer to glorify the Lord. I went through some really dark patches. I lost\u2014ruined a lot of relationships\/lost a lot of friends because of just how I dealt with things. I was really hard on myself, and I felt like I just hadn\u2019t done enough.\n\nSo, when I was diagnosed for a second time, I felt like it was the Lord really pushing me to turn the whole struggle over to Him and just use it for His glory.\n\n[Studio]\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> So, that\u2019s when the second time rolled around. Tyler really grabbed a hold of the verse that Kelly mentioned earlier\u2014that 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 verse, where it says, \u201cRejoice always. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in all circumstances\u201d\u2014which is what Tyler did so well\u2014\u201cfor this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.\u201d He truly believed, I think, in his heart, that this was the journey that God put on Tyler\u2019s heart and what Tyler\u2019s life was meant for.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The next two years would be incredibly difficult, physically, for him\/for you; and yet, some amazing things happened. with bone cancer; and for a while, it appeared he had beaten it; but Tyler\u2019s dad Tony says that\u2019s when they got a second diagnosis.\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> We had gone through almost 18 months of remission, and life started to get back to normal again. And voila!\u2014it happened again. I was really angry with God. I could not understand why God was asking my family to go through this again; and it took me a while to work through that. I couldn\u2019t sing praise songs; I couldn\u2019t pray; I didn\u2019t want to go to church; I did, but I didn\u2019t want to go; I would go, and I just felt like I was just there. I didn\u2019t really participate or worship the Lord.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, January 9<sup>th<\/sup>. Our hosts are Dave and Ann Wilson; I'm Bob Lepine. We\u2019re going to hear today about the very difficult path that God put Tony and Kelly Trent on with their son, Tyler, and about the upset that the whole family was praying for. Stay with us.\n\nAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. You know, I think all of us can remember times in the last 20\/30 years when, in professional sports and college sports, there have been moments, where athletes\/coaches: all of a sudden, God gets put on display.\n\nI\u2019m thinking about Tim Tebow\u2019s eye-black, and the verses he would put on there, or about\u2014I go all the way back to the greatest comeback in NFL history, when Frank Wright, as the substitute quarterback, and after he had led this comeback\u2014and afterwards they said, \u201cTell us about the comeback.\u201d He said, \u201cMy source of strength is Christ alone.\u201d\n\nWe\u2019ve all seen those moments; and at home, we\u2019re cheering; right?\u2014when in the glory of a sporting event, somebody says, \u201cThere is something much bigger going on here.\u201d That\u2019s pretty exciting; isn\u2019t it?\u201d\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You know, Bob, when you bring that up, I was never sitting at home watching those games. I was always on a sideline; and that\u2019s exactly what happened when Mike Utley got paralyzed\/when Reggie Brown got paralyzed. In the Silverdome, the entire stadium goes hush. I\u2019m on the field, praying for a man to be able to walk again. You look up, and the entire stadium is praying\u2014agnostics\/atheists are praying!\n\nIn one second, you realize: \u201cThis is a game. What\u2019s happened here is life and death,\u201d\u2014it is so much more important; and there is a belief in a God, who is control of both of those hanging in the balance. That\u2019s one of the things that I love about sport\u2014is it can transcend almost anything and take people\u2019s lives to something that really matters.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There was a Saturday in 2018 when\u2014it was one of those moments, as folks were settling in to watch a college football game, and all of a sudden, we got a story shared with us about one of the biggest fans that the Purdue Boilermaker football team has ever had\u2014a guy named Tyler Trent. We\u2019re going to hear that story and meet Tyler\u2019s parents, who are joining us today.\n\nTony and Kelly Trent, welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, guys.\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Thanks for having us. It\u2019s a real honor and a privilege to be here.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Yes; thank you.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Your journey\u2014hard journey\u2014that God has had you on over the last\u2014it\u2019s been a five-year\/six-year journey for you?\u2014\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014a journey that, looking back, you would have prayed for it to resolve itself differently. Yet, God did some amazing things through the short life of your son, Tyler. Introduce us to Tyler as a kid, growing up. He was smart; he was\u2014what was his nickname? What did they call him?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Smiley.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Smiley.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Everybody liked Tyler; didn\u2019t they?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Yes. So, Tyler is our firstborn. He was a really easy kid\u2014such a <em>joy<\/em> to parent. In 9<sup>th<\/sup> grade, I had two teachers come to me and say: \u201cI can\u2019t wait to see what Tyler does. He\u2019s made for big things.\u201d I\u2019m just thinking, \u201cHe\u2019s just our child; he\u2019s just normal to me.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> But he was a <em>joy<\/em>.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He was really on top\u2014read books a lot and could pull arcane facts from almost anywhere; right?\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Yes; he had an incredibly gifted mind. Usually, when kids are really intellectually smart, they can\u2019t either communicate verbally or written; and he could do both. He had a real mind for statistics and analytical things and read lots of books. I mean, he told me one time that he thought he read a hundred books a the summer. I think it was a little exaggerated. [Laughter] He was listening to podcasts or books <em>all <\/em>the time\n\nJust to add to what Kelly was sharing\u2014he was, from a young age\u2014you could just tell there was something special about Tyler in that\u2014he always wanted to hang out with adults and always wanted to be a part of adult conversations. We\u2019d encourage him: \u201cHey, Tyler, go play with your friends.\u201d He just wanted to sit around the dinner table and have conversations with adults. I think, to some degree, he thought it was a little juvenile to do the things that the kids were doing; and he was thinking at a higher capacity, if you will\u2014accepted Jesus at a young age and would do quiet times at a young age. It was just something extraordinary for sure.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yet, you know, he wants to be with adults because he is mature; but he\u2019s really\u2014all the kids loved him; right?\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Oh, yes; he had a gift of leadership. I told him\u2014I said, \u201cTyler, you\u2019re another Billy Graham; your story looks different.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here is something you don\u2019t hear often: A kid who reads a hundred books a summer also loves football. [Laughter] I mean, those don\u2019t typically go together.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> No.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s either one or the other. When did you recognize he first loved football?\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> When he was a little kid.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Day one. [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> He loved all sports; you know? He loved basketball, too; but\u2014\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I don\u2019t mean to be disrespectful at all; but you live in Indiana, and basketball is big in Indiana. [Laughter] How did Tyler become a <em>Purdue<\/em> football fan?\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Like I said, he loved all sports; and he actually was a writer for the campus newspaper called the<em> Purdue Exponent<\/em>. I think it was\u2014the timing of his sickness\u2014I tell people: \u201cIt was like Purdue football wasn\u2019t great. We just had a new coach, Coach Brohm, that year; and Tyler needed Purdue football, and Purdue football needed Tyler.\u201d\n\nOne thing about Tyler\u2019s personality was that, when he committed to something, he was <em>all in<\/em>. There was nothing you\u2019re going to do to stop him. When he committed to Purdue, he was all-in being a Purdue fan.\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Talk to us and tell us about the time the diagnosis came. What happened?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> So, Tyler always had plans\u2014like he was always\u2014like he had something coming, whether it was leadership camp, or missions\u2019 trips, or whatever it was; and that summer, he was having problems shooting the basketball.\n\nWe went home to Tony\u2019s parents for the Fourth of July, which we always did. My sister-in-law said, \u201cSomething is wrong with Tyler.\u201d I was like, \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d She\u2019s like, \u201cHe is so thin.\u201d I\u2019m thinking, \u201cPuberty,\u201d\u2014like I didn\u2019t even\u2014it didn\u2019t register with me.\n\nI told him\u2014that was July 4<sup>th<\/sup>, and he had a trip the next day. I said, \u201cNo matter what time you get home that night, we are going to the doctor the next morning.\u201d We did, and we went to a walk-in sports clinic. He came back from his x-ray and said, \u201cI heard the nurse say, \u2018This isn\u2019t good.\u2019\u201d Then the doctor walked in; and he is like shaking his head and looking at the scan, and circling it; you know? He\u2019s like, \u201cThis shouldn\u2019t be here.\u201d Within\u2014what?\u2014six hours, he was diagnosed.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was the diagnosis, Tony?\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> It was osteosarcoma, which is bone cancer. You know, it\u2019s one of those situations, where our family was healthy. We\u2019re really active; we went hiking and biking, and had all kinds of fun things, and never was unhealthy. You never dreamt that something like this would happen.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m a default optimist. I would hear something like this; and I would think: \u201cOkay; there may be chemo\/radiation, but this\u2014we\u2019ll figure out how to do this. Medical science is good; they can do these kinds of things.\u201d Is that where <em>you<\/em> were?\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Yes; first of all, we was just trying to grasp what it meant for a kid to have cancer.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> I remember the moment, where I was at. Kelly calls me and says, \u201cThe doctors are saying Tyler has cancer.\u201d I\u2019ll never forget looking at Kelly\u2019s face. She pulled up in the driveway, and I hugged her. Yes; it\u2019s\u2014it\u2019s\u2014it\u2019s forever ingrained in my mind. Then you just try to understand and work through: \u201cHow do you tell your family that your child has cancer?\u201d\n\nWe took a couple days to pray about it and think about it, and God led me to Psalms 103. It says this\u2014it says:\n\nPraise the Lord, O my soul: and all my inmost being, praise His holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all His benefits, who forgives all of your sins and heals all of your diseases; who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion; who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle\u2019s.\n\nThe Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. He made known His ways to Moses, His deeds to the people of Israel.\n\nThe Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse: nor will He harbor His anger forever. He does not treat us as the sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed the transgressions from us.\n\nAs a father has compassion on His children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him. For He knows how we are formed; He remembers that we are dust.\n\nI\u2014after I completed reading that, I challenged my family\u2014not knowing that this is really what it would look like\u2014I challenged my family that, regardless of what happened, we would bring honor and glory to God\u2019s name. We look back on the journey\u2014it\u2019s been a journey that no parent would ever want to go through, but we still see God\u2019s goodness and grace and mercy in all of it.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How did Tyler process?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> So, the morning that we actually\/that Tony read that and we told him, he had been doing a quiet time. He was in Thessalonians 5:16-18, where it talks about \u201cRejoice always; pray continually; give thanks in all things.\u201d He literally looked at us and said, \u201cWell, I think I was meant to be reading this this morning. Like, this is for me.\u201d\n\nHowever, while I think he started off <em>really<\/em> strong\u2014and we had <em>amazing<\/em> support from our church; we still do\u2014but about three or four months into it, he really started to struggle.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He is going through chemo at this point?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And\u2014\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Is chemo weekly, daily\u2014what?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Weekly.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> I probably spent more time in the hospital than I did at home. It was in-patient. Osteosarcoma\u2014they haven\u2019t had new treatment for over 35 years\u2014like there is one way to treat it. They say, \u201cIt\u2019s either successful, or it\u2019s not.\u201d We spent a lot of time in the hospital.\n\nI just think he was such a leader at school, and he had so many friends; so to be removed from all of that, for that much time, really got to him, mentally.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; you write in the book, where he\u2014\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> \u2014he was suicidal.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014got really depressed.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We have him describing what it was like during that time. Are you okay if we play\u2014\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014Tyler talking about it?\n\n[Previously Recorded]\n\n<strong>Tyler:<\/strong> You know, when I was first diagnosed, I was 15 years old. You know, I was very immature, I would say. I entered a state of depression\u2014of questioning God and asking the questions of: \u201cHey, am I ever going to be able to throw a football with my kid one day?\u201d\u2014because of the way osteosarcoma works is\u2014before they had any treatments, they\u2019d just amputate your arm; they\u2019d just get rid of the tumor. They had told me that; that\u2019s scary for a 15-year-old.\n\nThere was a lot of: \u201cAm I going to live? Am I going to die?\u201d I entered a state of deep depression because of that. Basically, I had to decide, in my mind, that I was either going to kill myself or the cancer was. I actually tried a couple of times and, by the grace of God, did not succeed.\n\n[Studio]\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Listening to him describe that, and hearing him say, \u201cI was pretty immature, at the time,\u201d I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYou sound <em>remarkably<\/em> mature for a 15-year-old young man, processing life-and-death issues.\u201d\n\nBut as parents\u2014when your son is discouraged and depressed, and thinking, \u201cWhat am I living for?\u201d\u2014Mary Ann and I said to each other, at one point, when we were raising our kids: \u201cI would rather <em>you<\/em> suffer than any of our kids suffer,\u201d\u2014not that you wish anything on anybody\u2014but \u201cI\u2019d rather <em>me<\/em> suffer first\/second <em>you<\/em>, before any of our kids have to suffer.\u201d For parents, to watch your kids go through this\u2014\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It\u2019s our greatest fear, and you were walking through, probably, your greatest fear.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s not natural.\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Yes; it was\u2014I told him, all the time\u2014I said, \u201cTyler, I would take this from you in a heartbeat.\u201d\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> He said, \u201cDad, you don\u2019t want it,\u201d\u2014just the kind of kid Tyler was. I mean, he was\u2014I mean, he always was trying to protect Kelly and [me].\n\nWhen you go through something like this, it\u2019s <em>extremely<\/em> difficult. I mean, it\u2019s\u2014I share all the time that: \u201cMy son had cancer. He had the physical cancer; but my family got cancer, too. It was like a bomb went off in my house in that\u2014there wasn\u2019t a big boom, and there wasn\u2019t shrapnel that came from the bomb\u2014but the shrapnel was dealing with life, and the sound is the crying of your family.\u201d\n\nHaving your child, Tyler, lying flat on the floor\u2014and crying and banging his foot or his hand on the floor; and the other boys\u2019 crying, and Kelly trying to help them\u2014and I\u2019m stuck with like being a deer [looking at headlights] in my eyes\u2014praying to God to help me to make\/to lead my family because I don\u2019t know what to do.\n\nIt\u2019s a hard journey that Kelly and I, and Tyler as well\u2014we don\u2019t want anybody else to have to go through with it; so part of the passion is to try to help find a cure.\n\n<strong>Ann:<\/strong> So, your entire family is grieving\u2014Tyler is grieving; you guys are grieving; and you have two other sons. What was their response, and how did you deal with <em>that<\/em>?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Blake writes a chapter in the book\u2014it\u2019s called \u201cHarsh Realities.\u201d He went through a really, really hard time his 10<sup>th<\/sup> and 11<sup>th<\/sup> grade years. Ethan just likes to keep busy and distracted, and he doesn\u2019t want to think about it. So, yes, we\u2019re working through those things; but by the grace of God, Blake is thriving today; he is doing beautifully.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Kelly, do you think some of what had him spiral out\u2014I mean, certainly the grief and the trauma\u2014but Tyler is demanding all of your focus and attention; and here is a young man, in the middle of adolescence, and Mom and Dad have to be occupied elsewhere?\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Well, right; and if you can imagine, I was homeschooling at the time. Ethan was in 4<sup>th<\/sup> grade; Blake was in 8<sup>th<\/sup>; Tyler was in 10<sup>th<\/sup>. I was hardly there\u2014I have beautiful friends that helped me, but it wasn\u2019t Mom.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They had to feel abandoned\u2014\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Right.\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014not that you had anything else you could be doing.\n\n<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Oh, no. Yes\/no; I agree.\n\n<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Can you tell us what your walk and your relationship with God was like as you were walking through this darkness?\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> So, the first time that Tyler got sick\u2014it was actually really good, I think. Kelly and I were working really well together. We had so many people praying for us. I tell people that I had an extraordinary experience with just the presence of the Lord in my heart and in my soul. It was really something I never experienced in my life before. It felt like, a little bit of, heaven to be honest with you. It was just a small glimpse of what heaven\u2014the peace of heaven might feel like.\n\nThe first time, it was good. We had gone through almost 18 months of remission, and life started to get back to normal again. And voila!\u2014it happened again, and I was really angry with God. I could not understand why God was asking my family to go through this again, and it took me a while to work through that. I couldn\u2019t sing praise songs; I couldn\u2019t pray; I didn\u2019t want to go to church; I did, but I didn\u2019t want to go; I would go, and I would just\u2014felt like I was just there. I didn\u2019t really participate or worship the Lord.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> At the same time, Tyler had almost a completely different perspective\u2014\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> Yes; he did!\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014on the second occurrence than you had. In fact, we\u2019ve got a clip of him talking about what happened with him when he found out that his cancer was back.\n\n[Previously Recorded]\n\n<strong>Tyler:<\/strong> I was really hard on myself because I felt like I hadn\u2019t really used my story for the Lord\u2019s glory. I felt like I could have done more with my cancer to glorify the Lord. I went through some really dark patches. I lost\u2014ruined a lot of relationships\/lost a lot of friends because of just how I dealt with things. I was really hard on myself, and I felt like I just hadn\u2019t done enough.\n\nSo, when I was diagnosed for a second time, I felt like it was the Lord really pushing me to turn the whole struggle over to Him and just use it for His glory.\n\n[Studio]\n\n<strong>Tony:<\/strong> So, that\u2019s when the second time rolled around. Tyler really grabbed a hold of the verse that Kelly mentioned earlier\u2014that 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 verse, where it says, \u201cRejoice always. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in all circumstances\u201d\u2014which is what Tyler did so well\u2014\u201cfor this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.\u201d He truly believed, I think, in his heart, that this was the journey that God put on Tyler\u2019s heart and what Tyler\u2019s life was meant for.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The next two years would be incredibly difficult, physically, for him\/for you; and yet, some amazing things happened.
