We\u2019re going to talk more about that today with Dennis and Barbara Rainey. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. I\u2019m just curious: \u201cHave you, Ann\/have you been comfortable with the temperature here in the studio over the last several\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I feel like this is a loaded question. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Just wondering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I have been, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s been comfortable? You haven\u2019t been too hot or too cold?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is a voice from the past. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> What is going on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is Dennis Rainey\u2014[Laughter] [Indistinct chatter]\u2014with his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Barbara Rainey is here as well. Barbara how does it feel today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you have a root of bitterness. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Are you comfortable, Barbara?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I am comfortable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes? Dennis how do you feel today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Perfect. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> See, here\u2019s what you need to know. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019m wondering what we need to know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here\u2019s what you need to know: For years\u2014because it was 26 \u00bd years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014that Dennis and I were first in a closet, over in another building, where we recorded the first ten years of <em>FamilyLife Today;<\/em> and then finally, in a recording studio, here, at our headquarters. It was for those years we would walk in and Dennis would say, \u201cMan, it\u2019s hot in here.\u201d I would go, \u201cNo, it\u2019s comfortable.\u201d I would look at Barbara: \u201cBarbara, how are you feeling?\u201d She said, \u201cIt feels comfortable to me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> He always had on a suit coat\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> A suit coat.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014or a blazer or jacket of some kind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Barbara, you\u2019re so nice. Look at you sticking up for Dennis. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He would have on an undershirt, a shirt, and a suit coat; and he would say, \u201cMan, it\u2019s hot in here.\u201d I would go, \u201cWell, maybe it\u2019s because you\u2019ve got three layers on in the air conditioning.\u201d [Laughter] We fought like an old married couple about what the temperature should be, but the guests always affirmed that I was right and Dennis was wrong. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I told you to stop coming to work in shorts. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You can see I did. I\u2019m wearing jeans today instead of shorts. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019m feeling a little hot right now\u2014[Laughter]\u2014getting warm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We want to, again, welcome back Dennis and Barbara Rainey to<em> FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Nice to have you guys back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, thanks. We\u2019re glad to be here; it\u2019s fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have to think there\u2019s some listeners, who are tuned in and go, \u201cDid I get in a time warp in a machine?\u201d\u2014you know, and\u2014\u201cI\u2019m back\u2026\u201d But I know our listeners\u2014it\u2019s been fun to hear from listeners, who have said, \u201cWe\u2019ve missed Dennis and Barbara\u201d; and at the same time, they\u2019ve said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Both of them\u2014both of them wrote. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>We missed you, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, at the same time, they\u2019ve said, \u201cWe\u2019re really enjoying getting to know Dave and Ann.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So it\u2019s been fun to see how the handoff happens and how we continue to provide practical biblical help and hope for marriages and families. That\u2019s what <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> has <em>always<\/em> been about\u2014less about who\u2019s talking and more about what\u2019s the content we\u2019re talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; and two things, Bob, to that. First of all, thanks to the thousands of listeners who wrote us cards; we\u2019re still reading them. I\u2019m still reading the cards; and some of them\u2014re-reading them\u2014very meaningful\/very, very encouraging, especially when, back last summer, I went through knee replacement surgery. You need something to get you out of the pain. Those cards\u2014those cards did that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing I want to say is just how proud we are of Dave and Ann and the job they\u2019ve done of carrying on, here at <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, and also David Robbins and being President. <em>FamilyLife<\/em> is going to be around, by the grace of God, to make an impact for a lot of years. You two, as well as Dave and Meg, are part of the human reasons that\u2019s happening\u2014not to mention the co-host here, Bob Lepine, helping steer the ship as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve had a chance to listen to a few <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> programs?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Any highlights from the last eight or nine months?\u2014any programs that stood out for you? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh boy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019ve really liked what you did with Steve Robinson and the story of Chick-fil-A<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. I guess it\u2019s because Steve is a very good friend of mine\u2014I love that one. Gary Chapman\u2014his story of befriending a 16-year-old African American young man, who attended his church, who has gone on to make a great impact for the kingdom\u2014that was really sweet to hear their story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes; just to hear\u2014again, Dave and Ann doing a great job interviewing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I would just say\u2014we are so grateful and humbled to be here. Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Plus, you guys really are irreplaceable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We\u2019re standing on the shoulders of giants. I mean, I hope we do well. This is a fearful moment; every time we walk in here, we\u2019re on our knees, asking God to continue to do what He did through you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s a good place to be; we were there, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014on your knees; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m just curious if there are any programs you listened to, where you thought, \u201cWhat are they talking about?!\u201d \u201cWho said that?!\u201d \u201cI\u2019ve got to talk\/I\u2019ve got to call Dave and tell him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t have any of those moments?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Not any of those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; well, if they come, send them to me; okay?\u00a0 I\u2019ll get somebody on it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Dave and Ann, thanks for inviting us back and for the opportunity to be on the program a couple of times this fall and here, again, today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And with Thanksgiving coming up this week, I know you guys are busy; because Thanksgiving is a busy holiday at the Rainey house. But I also know you\u2019re looking ahead to the fact that, as soon as you say\u2014well, I guess as soon as the dishes are done on Thursday\u2014you start turning your attention to the fact that Christmas is, this year, less than four weeks from the end of Thanksgiving. This is one of those short Christmas seasons; and Barbara, you\u2019ve got a passion to see us make the most of every moment of the holiday season.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I do; and I know a lot of women start actually doing all of their Christmas decorating over the Thanksgiving holiday, so there may be many people who already have their trees up before Thanksgiving. I know that\u2019s what a lot of women do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Will you have your tree up before?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> No, no; I never put it up before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>That\u2019s tradition.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes, it\u2019s just part of the old rule that we had around here; right? We didn\u2019t celebrate Christmas until after Thanksgiving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But Dennis will tell you that, as soon as Thanksgiving\u2019s over, he becomes a pack mule. [Laughter] Isn\u2019t that true?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201418-wheeler.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; and you\u2019ve got to unload\u2014is the closet still full of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014boxes; yes, the boxes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Do you have to do that, too, Dave?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh my goodness, every year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Every year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> How can we have so many? We have to go up to the attic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> One of these years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes; I have to go <em>outside<\/em> to get to the attic. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This particular cottage houses\u2014we built this cottage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Oh come on\u2014you\u2019re exaggerating.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh a cottage for the decorations?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Actually,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Not really.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014it\u2019s a little building; because we converted our garage to a playroom for the kids, years go, with a ping-pong table and all that so we built this little thing in the backyard for the lawn mower, and the bikes, and the weed eater, and the leaf blower, and all that stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They\u2019re now all out in the yard, because it\u2019s been taken over with Christmas decorations. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Actually, it was all those boxes that convinced Barbara: \u201cSomebody\u2019s got to do something to bring the real meaning of Christmas back to families and let them seize the day with their families to transmit their faith to their kids.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This has been a passion of yours for a long time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> A long time; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> A passion that you put some elbow grease toward about a decade ago, where you said, \u201c I\u2019m going to create what I wished I could find every time I went to the hobby store,\u201d and that\u2019s Christmas decorations that talk about Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. I wanted that when we were raising our kids. I wanted something besides the manger scene, which was lovely. I have two or three of them, and we put them up; but you just look at it. Until Christmas Day, when we read the story, there was no way to interact with it. I thought there had to be more. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI began creating Christmas ornaments that are the names of Jesus for the Christmas tree. My vision was that, as the children would hang the ornaments on the tree, mom and dad would teach them to read it\u2014if they were toddlers or preschoolers\u2014teach them to read some of those words; and if they\u2019re older, just begin to talk about these names of Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you think about it, how many names do we have as people?\u2014three? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014maybe four. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We have titles and some of these\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>If you\u2019re a king or a queen, you might have five or six\u2014if you\u2019re the Queen of England. But Jesus has, some scholars say, upwards of 300 names. Our names tell us something about who we are. When you meet someone for the first time, you ask what their name is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, when Moses met God for the first time, he said, \u201cWhat is Your name?\u201d God answered and told him who He was. He said, \u201cI am that I am.\u201d As we celebrate the holidays, it\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> opportunity to begin to teach your children who Jesus is. He came in a manger; he was born as a baby, but who is He? What are His names? The names are the easiest way to begin to make inroads into your child\u2019s heart and into their soul about this person who came to change their lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I love what Barbara did, because she has created over 30 different ornaments that bear the name of Christ. There\u2019s a set that are \u201cHis Family Names\u201d; there\u2019s another one: \u201cHis Eternal Names.\u201d Still yet another one: that has the name of Jesus in a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014five different languages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014five different languages around the world, called \u201cHis Name Among the Nations.\u201d Then, what we\u2019re talking about here today: \u201cHis Advent Names,\u201d which are the names of Christ around His first coming to planet earth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There are some people you\u2019ve talked to who have made their tree, exclusively, names of Jesus. Not everybody does that; some people still\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014have reindeers, and Snoopy, or whoever else they want to have on there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you say \u201c\u2026deers\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Reindeer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You said. \u201c\u2026deers.\u201d [Laughter] I\u2019m sorry; I went into autocorrect.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; you did. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Is there something wrong with \u201creindeers\u201d? I don\u2019t know; what\u2019s the problem here? That\u2019s what we call them in Michigan! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. There are, also, people who have had two different trees: they'll have a family tree; but they\u2019ll have a decorative tree\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that\u2019s designed to remind us: \u201cThis is really what the season is all about.\u201d How have you done it at your house? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, let me just say this first. My daughter-in-law\u2019s the first one that I saw do that. They have their big tree in their den, and the girls all\u2014they have four daughters\u2014the girls decorated it with all this stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut she found this cute little tree, and she put it in the living room; and she put just the names of Jesus on it. She said, \u201cI used to love to go in there every morning during the month of December.\u201d She said, \u201cI would sit there and have my quiet time, or read my Bible, or just sit and look at it.\u201d I think a lot of people have started doing that. She called it a \u201cJesus Tree.\u201d Now, I\u2019ve started calling ours a \u201cJesus Tree,\u201d too; because that\u2019s all I put on our tree anymore are the names of Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I have all these ornaments on our tree.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Do you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And I have several trees at home too. One\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes, we have a tree in every room of the house. [Laughter] She\u2019s not telling you\u2014in the bathroom, we have a tree. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No, that\u2019s not true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Okay; maybe, not the bathroom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It is true; it\u2019s just a great reminder\u2014but not only that they\u2019re beautiful\u2014people remark on them when they come in because they\u2019re different. They\u2019re beautiful; they\u2019re extraordinary. They\u2019ll ask, \u201cOh, where did you get those?\u201d Because you don't find those in any\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014store around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes, and that\u2019s why I ended up having them made; because I kept thinking: \u201cSomebody\u2019s going to make these ornaments. Somebody\u2019s going to make ornaments about Jesus,\u201d and nobody ever did. So I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If folks are interested in seeing the whole variety of names\u2014all of them\u2014they can go to our website, FamilyLifeToday.com; and they\u2019re different. Each season, you took a different approach to the ornaments; so it\u2019s not like your tree\u2014if you\u2019re going to use these on a tree\u2014are going to have just one style of ornament.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Some are globes, and some are two dimensional.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So it\u2019s a different approach; but again, folks can go to FamilyLifeToday.com and see all that\u2019s available from Ever Thine Home<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and order them for their own home this year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>They make really great gifts, too. I just remember when all of our kids were in school, and it was getting closer to Christmas\u2014I remember, every year, I would go: \u201cI want to give something to the kids\u2019 teachers. What do I give the kids\u2019 teachers?!\u201d I never felt like I did a good job; but these ornaments make a really nice gift that you can give to someone like a teacher, or a Sunday school teacher, or someone. You can let them know that: \u201cThis is about Jesus,\u201d and \u201cThis is who we celebrate at Christmas in our family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Think about that\u2014you know, most of the year, you would feel maybe a little awkward giving a gift to someone, and you don't know where they are on their faith journey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You give them something that\u2019s overtly Christian and you feel like: \u201cIs that going to feel heavy-handed?\u201d or \u201cAare they just going to say, \u2018Thanks,\u2019 and not really care about it?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChristmas ornaments about Jesus\u2014that people would go, \u201cI can see a connection there,\u201d\u2014even folks, who aren\u2019t regular church goers, are going to look at this and be open to it at Christmas. This season of the year\u2014we lose sight, Dave, of the fact that this season of the year is a season when we can have conversations about Jesus with people who don\u2019t talk about Jesus any other time of the year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We tell our people at our church: \u201cIf you invite your neighbor to a Christmas service, eight out of ten will say, \u2018Yes.\u2019 They will not say, \u2018Yes,\u2019 in the middle of July; they will at Christmas.\u201d We\u2019ve done research to find that they are going to be open to a Christmas invitation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSame thing\u2019s true to talk about Jesus, so this is a tool that gives you a way to do that. It\u2019s a beautiful way to open up something\u2014that\u2019s maybe there waiting to be talked about and you never talk about it\u2014but now, I have a way to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you do anything intentionally discipleship-oriented with your kids during the Christmas season as you were raising the boys? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes, we would\u2014we had an Advent calendar, and we would talk about it. We would read the Bible regularly. We had a birthday cake when they were little; I think a lot of people have done that. What about you guys?\u2014did you have some great traditions?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I stop and think. We did have traditions\u2014most of them were around what meals we were going to have, what food items were going to be served at what meal, or around how the stockings get opened. I mean, we had those little family customs that are a part of things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo have something that\u2019s focused on: \u201cWhat\u2019s this holiday all about?\u201d and to use it intentionally\u2014it feels awkward to us, as parents, I think, sometimes to do that with our kids. We don\u2019t have confidence. That\u2019s why to have a tool like this makes it easier for a parent that goes, \u201cI don\u2019t know what I\u2019m doing,\u201d but somebody says, \u201cHere just do this,\u201d and you go, \u201cOkay, I can do that\u201d; right?\u2014yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Because everybody\u2019s decorating for Christmas anyway.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Everybody has ornaments for their tree, so it\u2019s just not hard to communicate around something that\u2019s common across our culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve had, here on the table this week, four of the ornaments that you created. These are the \u201cAdvent Names of Jesus.\u201d They\u2019ve been hidden away in brown paper bags with numbers on them; and little boy Dave has been staring at them the whole time, [Laughter] going, \u201cWhen do I get to open another one?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> So the numbers represent what?\u2014each week?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014the Sundays of Advent; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes, so I\u2019m opening up number two.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> So the second Sunday of Advent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Let\u2019s pretend you just did this. Walk us through what you would do at this globe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Okay; I would say\u2014well, no; you\u2019re holding it\u2014so I would say: \u201cWhat does it say? Can you read us the name?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Am I supposed to be your child?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes, I think so. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> There you go; \u201cThe Word became flesh and dwelt among us\u2014John 1:14.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s the verse; the name\u2019s on the other side.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Turn it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> The name on the other side says\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Then you flip it over and it says, \u201cJesus is the Word.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014is the Word. I would ask, \u201cDo you know\u201d\u2014depending on the age of the child\u2014I would ask: \u201cWhat does it mean that Jesus is the Word? Do you know?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And a five-year-old says, \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> A five-year-old says, \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> A twenty-five year old might say the same thing. [Laughter] Seriously; really\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, yes; that\u2019s not a normal name\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014that people have, so we don\u2019t really know what that means. The set of ornaments comes with a small book. I\u2019ve written a story for each one of the names that you can read out loud with your kids that will help them understand. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut that particular name comes from the first chapter of John, where it says, \u201cAnd the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,\u201d and the Word means Jesus\u2014so just helping your children begin to understand that and what it means for Jesus to be the Word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you know, you stop and think about it, words are simply an assembling together of letters that are pointing to something bigger than what they are. We read a word, and something pops into our mind; we understand. If I say, \u201cchair,\u201d you have a picture now in your mind. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJesus as the Word\u2014theologians will look at this and they will say, \u201cThe Word is kind of God\u2019s big idea about what life, and meaning, and purpose,\u201d\u2014it's what God had in mind from the beginning. Jesus is God's big idea; when we talk about Him as the Word, it\u2019s what is in the mind of God from the beginning. So His incarnation, His death, and resurrection\u2014when we say, \u201cHe is the Word\u201d\u2014this is the plan of God, from the beginning: that He would come, that He would live a perfect life, that He would die a substitutionary death, and then be raised again to new life so that those who have been separated from him\/those who have been far off could be brought near.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Isn\u2019t He referred to as \u201cthe Word of life\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Absolutely; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> His words bring life. He shows us the way: the way to God, the way to live life, the way to withstand challenges. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis has been a tough year for our country. There's a lot of strife; there\u2019s been a lot of evil that has occurred in our country\u2014a lot of division, and there\u2019s a lot of misunderstanding. We need words\u2014we need <em>the <\/em>Word to bring healing and life to our country.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It\u2019s interesting, as you go look at John 1:14, I mean, you talk about a little Bible study you could have with your kids or with your adult kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cAnd the Word became flesh,\u201d\u2014there's the Christmas story in the very beginning of that verse\u2014\u201cAnd the word became incarnate\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cThe big idea became a human being.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right\u2014\u201cand dwelt among us,\u201d\u2014literally, pitched His tent in our neighborhood; came to live here. \u201cAnd we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.\u201d Boy, oh boy, you could talk for an hour. You could have a very interesting discussion with your children about: \u201cWhat\u2019s grace and truth?\u201d \u201cWhat does the Word really look like beyond just Christmas morning?\u2014just a baby in a manger?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I love verse 4 of John 1 because it says, \u201cThe Word gave life to everything that was created, and His life brought light to everyone.\u201d That is a great discussion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDave and I had three great conversation times; one was on the way to school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You\u2019re talking about with our kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014with your kids; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014with our kids. One was at dinner, and one was at bedtime. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I could see putting a bag on the kitchen table when we eat, or a bag on their beds at night, to talk about that; because kids don\u2019t want to go to bed when they\u2019re little. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> No; well, they\u2019re happy to talk if it\u2019ll mean staying awake longer; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Exactly; they want to talk about anything and everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> So they can drag this conversation on for a long time; then to pray about that. I\u2019m just curious: \u201cHave you, Ann\/have you been comfortable with the temperature here in the studio over the last several\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I feel like this is a loaded question. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Just wondering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I have been, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s been comfortable? You haven\u2019t been too hot or too cold?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is a voice from the past. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> What is going on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is Dennis Rainey\u2014[Laughter] [Indistinct chatter]\u2014with his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Barbara Rainey is here as well. Barbara how does it feel today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you have a root of bitterness. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Are you comfortable, Barbara?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I am comfortable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes? Dennis how do you feel today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Perfect. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> See, here\u2019s what you need to know. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019m wondering what we need to know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here\u2019s what you need to know: For years\u2014because it was 26 \u00bd years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014that Dennis and I were first in a closet, over in another building, where we recorded the first ten years of <em>FamilyLife Today;<\/em> and then finally, in a recording studio, here, at our headquarters. It was for those years we would walk in and Dennis would say, \u201cMan, it\u2019s hot in here.\u201d I would go, \u201cNo, it\u2019s comfortable.\u201d I would look at Barbara: \u201cBarbara, how are you feeling?\u201d She said, \u201cIt feels comfortable to me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> He always had on a suit coat\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> A suit coat.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014or a blazer or jacket of some kind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Barbara, you\u2019re so nice. Look at you sticking up for Dennis. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He would have on an undershirt, a shirt, and a suit coat; and he would say, \u201cMan, it\u2019s hot in here.\u201d I would go, \u201cWell, maybe it\u2019s because you\u2019ve got three layers on in the air conditioning.\u201d [Laughter] We fought like an old married couple about what the temperature should be, but the guests always affirmed that I was right and Dennis was wrong. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I told you to stop coming to work in shorts. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You can see I did. I\u2019m wearing jeans today instead of shorts. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I\u2019m feeling a little hot right now\u2014[Laughter]\u2014getting warm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We want to, again, welcome back Dennis and Barbara Rainey to<em> FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Nice to have you guys back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, thanks. We\u2019re glad to be here; it\u2019s fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have to think there\u2019s some listeners, who are tuned in and go, \u201cDid I get in a time warp in a machine?\u201d\u2014you know, and\u2014\u201cI\u2019m back\u2026\u201d But I know our listeners\u2014it\u2019s been fun to hear from listeners, who have said, \u201cWe\u2019ve missed Dennis and Barbara\u201d; and at the same time, they\u2019ve said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Both of them\u2014both of them wrote. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>We missed you, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, at the same time, they\u2019ve said, \u201cWe\u2019re really enjoying getting to know Dave and Ann.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So it\u2019s been fun to see how the handoff happens and how we continue to provide practical biblical help and hope for marriages and families. That\u2019s what <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> has <em>always<\/em> been about\u2014less about who\u2019s talking and more about what\u2019s the content we\u2019re talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; and two things, Bob, to that. First of all, thanks to the thousands of listeners who wrote us cards; we\u2019re still reading them. I\u2019m still reading the cards; and some of them\u2014re-reading them\u2014very meaningful\/very, very encouraging, especially when, back last summer, I went through knee replacement surgery. You need something to get you out of the pain. Those cards\u2014those cards did that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing I want to say is just how proud we are of Dave and Ann and the job they\u2019ve done of carrying on, here at <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, and also David Robbins and being President. <em>FamilyLife<\/em> is going to be around, by the grace of God, to make an impact for a lot of years. You two, as well as Dave and Meg, are part of the human reasons that\u2019s happening\u2014not to mention the co-host here, Bob Lepine, helping steer the ship as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve had a chance to listen to a few <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> programs?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Any highlights from the last eight or nine months?\u2014any programs that stood out for you? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Oh boy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019ve really liked what you did with Steve Robinson and the story of Chick-fil-A<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. I guess it\u2019s because Steve is a very good friend of mine\u2014I love that one. Gary Chapman\u2014his story of befriending a 16-year-old African American young man, who attended his church, who has gone on to make a great impact for the kingdom\u2014that was really sweet to hear their story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes; just to hear\u2014again, Dave and Ann doing a great job interviewing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I would just say\u2014we are so grateful and humbled to be here. Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Plus, you guys really are irreplaceable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We\u2019re standing on the shoulders of giants. I mean, I hope we do well. This is a fearful moment; every time we walk in here, we\u2019re on our knees, asking God to continue to do what He did through you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s a good place to be; we were there, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014on your knees; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m just curious if there are any programs you listened to, where you thought, \u201cWhat are they talking about?!\u201d \u201cWho said that?!\u201d \u201cI\u2019ve got to talk\/I\u2019ve got to call Dave and tell him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t have any of those moments?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Not any of those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; well, if they come, send them to me; okay?\u00a0 I\u2019ll get somebody on it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Dave and Ann, thanks for inviting us back and for the opportunity to be on the program a couple of times this fall and here, again, today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And with Thanksgiving coming up this week, I know you guys are busy; because Thanksgiving is a busy holiday at the Rainey house. But I also know you\u2019re looking ahead to the fact that, as soon as you say\u2014well, I guess as soon as the dishes are done on Thursday\u2014you start turning your attention to the fact that Christmas is, this year, less than four weeks from the end of Thanksgiving. This is one of those short Christmas seasons; and Barbara, you\u2019ve got a passion to see us make the most of every moment of the holiday season.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I do; and I know a lot of women start actually doing all of their Christmas decorating over the Thanksgiving holiday, so there may be many people who already have their trees up before Thanksgiving. I know that\u2019s what a lot of women do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Will you have your tree up before?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> No, no; I never put it up before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>That\u2019s tradition.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes, it\u2019s just part of the old rule that we had around here; right? We didn\u2019t celebrate Christmas until after Thanksgiving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But Dennis will tell you that, as soon as Thanksgiving\u2019s over, he becomes a pack mule. We have to go up to the attic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> One of these years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes; I have to go <em>outside<\/em> to get to the attic. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This particular cottage houses\u2014we built this cottage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Oh come on\u2014you\u2019re exaggerating.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh a cottage for the decorations?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Actually,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Not really.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014it\u2019s a little building; because we converted our garage to a playroom for the kids, years go, with a ping-pong table and all that so we built this little thing in the backyard for the lawn mower, and the bikes, and the weed eater, and the leaf blower, and all that stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They\u2019re now all out in the yard, because it\u2019s been taken over with Christmas decorations. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Actually, it was all those boxes that convinced Barbara: \u201cSomebody\u2019s got to do something to bring the real meaning of Christmas back to families and let them seize the day with their families to transmit their faith to their kids.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This has been a passion of yours for a long time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> A long time; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> A passion that you put some elbow grease toward about a decade ago, where you said, \u201c I\u2019m going to create what I wished I could find every time I went to the hobby store,\u201d and that\u2019s Christmas decorations that talk about Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. I wanted that when we were raising our kids. I wanted something besides the manger scene, which was lovely. I have two or three of them, and we put them up; but you just look at it. Until Christmas Day, when we read the story, there was no way to interact with it. I thought there had to be more. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI began creating Christmas ornaments that are the names of Jesus for the Christmas tree. My vision was that, as the children would hang the ornaments on the tree, mom and dad would teach them to read it\u2014if they were toddlers or preschoolers\u2014teach them to read some of those words; and if they\u2019re older, just begin to talk about these names of Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you think about it, how many names do we have as people?\u2014three? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014maybe four. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We have titles and some of these\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>If you\u2019re a king or a queen, you might have five or six\u2014if you\u2019re the Queen of England. But Jesus has, some scholars say, upwards of 300 names. Our names tell us something about who we are. When you meet someone for the first time, you ask what their name is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, when Moses met God for the first time, he said, \u201cWhat is Your name?\u201d God answered and told him who He was. He said, \u201cI am that I am.\u201d As we celebrate the holidays, it\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> opportunity to begin to teach your children who Jesus is. He came in a manger; he was born as a baby, but who is He? What are His names? The names are the easiest way to begin to make inroads into your child\u2019s heart and into their soul about this person who came to change their lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I love what Barbara did, because she has created over 30 different ornaments that bear the name of Christ. There\u2019s a set that are \u201cHis Family Names\u201d; there\u2019s another one: \u201cHis Eternal Names.\u201d Still yet another one: that has the name of Jesus in a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014five different languages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014five different languages around the world, called \u201cHis Name Among the Nations.\u201d Then, what we\u2019re talking about here today: \u201cHis Advent Names,\u201d which are the names of Christ around His first coming to planet earth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There are some people you\u2019ve talked to who have made their tree, exclusively, names of Jesus. Not everybody does that; some people still\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014have reindeers, and Snoopy, or whoever else they want to have on there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you say \u201c\u2026deers\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Reindeer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You said. \u201c\u2026deers.\u201d [Laughter] I\u2019m sorry; I went into autocorrect.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; you did. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Is there something wrong with \u201creindeers\u201d? I don\u2019t know; what\u2019s the problem here? That\u2019s what we call them in Michigan! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. There are, also, people who have had two different trees: they'll have a family tree; but they\u2019ll have a decorative tree\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that\u2019s designed to remind us: \u201cThis is really what the season is all about.\u201d How have you done it at your house? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, let me just say this first. My daughter-in-law\u2019s the first one that I saw do that. They have their big tree in their den, and the girls all\u2014they have four daughters\u2014the girls decorated it with all this stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut she found this cute little tree, and she put it in the living room; and she put just the names of Jesus on it. She said, \u201cI used to love to go in there every morning during the month of December.\u201d She said, \u201cI would sit there and have my quiet time, or read my Bible, or just sit and look at it.\u201d I think a lot of people have started doing that. She called it a \u201cJesus Tree.\u201d Now, I\u2019ve started calling ours a \u201cJesus Tree,\u201d too; because that\u2019s all I put on our tree anymore are the names of Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I have all these ornaments on our tree.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Do you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And I have several trees at home too. One\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes, we have a tree in every room of the house. [Laughter] She\u2019s not telling you\u2014in the bathroom, we have a tree. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No, that\u2019s not true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Okay; maybe, not the bathroom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It is true; it\u2019s just a great reminder\u2014but not only that they\u2019re beautiful\u2014people remark on them when they come in because they\u2019re different. They\u2019re beautiful; they\u2019re extraordinary. They\u2019ll ask, \u201cOh, where did you get those?\u201d Because you don't find those in any\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014store around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes, and that\u2019s why I ended up having them made; because I kept thinking: \u201cSomebody\u2019s going to make these ornaments. Somebody\u2019s going to make ornaments about Jesus,\u201d and nobody ever did. So I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If folks are interested in seeing the whole variety of names\u2014all of them\u2014they can go to our website, FamilyLifeToday.com; and they\u2019re different. Each season, you took a different approach to the ornaments; so it\u2019s not like your tree\u2014if you\u2019re going to use these on a tree\u2014are going to have just one style of ornament.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Some are globes, and some are two dimensional.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So it\u2019s a different approach; but again, folks can go to FamilyLifeToday.com and see all that\u2019s available from Ever Thine Home<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and order them for their own home this year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>They make really great gifts, too. I just remember when all of our kids were in school, and it was getting closer to Christmas\u2014I remember, every year, I would go: \u201cI want to give something to the kids\u2019 teachers. What do I give the kids\u2019 teachers?!\u201d I never felt like I did a good job; but these ornaments make a really nice gift that you can give to someone like a teacher, or a Sunday school teacher, or someone. You can let them know that: \u201cThis is about Jesus,\u201d and \u201cThis is who we celebrate at Christmas in our family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Think about that\u2014you know, most of the year, you would feel maybe a little awkward giving a gift to someone, and you don't know where they are on their faith journey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You give them something that\u2019s overtly Christian and you feel like: \u201cIs that going to feel heavy-handed?\u201d or \u201cAare they just going to say, \u2018Thanks,\u2019 and not really care about it?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChristmas ornaments about Jesus\u2014that people would go, \u201cI can see a connection there,\u201d\u2014even folks, who aren\u2019t regular church goers, are going to look at this and be open to it at Christmas. This season of the year\u2014we lose sight, Dave, of the fact that this season of the year is a season when we can have conversations about Jesus with people who don\u2019t talk about Jesus any other time of the year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> We tell our people at our church: \u201cIf you invite your neighbor to a Christmas service, eight out of ten will say, \u2018Yes.\u2019 They will not say, \u2018Yes,\u2019 in the middle of July; they will at Christmas.\u201d We\u2019ve done research to find that they are going to be open to a Christmas invitation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSame thing\u2019s true to talk about Jesus, so this is a tool that gives you a way to do that. It\u2019s a beautiful way to open up something\u2014that\u2019s maybe there waiting to be talked about and you never talk about it\u2014but now, I have a way to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you do anything intentionally discipleship-oriented with your kids during the Christmas season as you were raising the boys? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes, we would\u2014we had an Advent calendar, and we would talk about it. We would read the Bible regularly. We had a birthday cake when they were little; I think a lot of people have done that. What about you guys?\u2014did you have some great traditions?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I stop and think. We did have traditions\u2014most of them were around what meals we were going to have, what food items were going to be served at what meal, or around how the stockings get opened. I mean, we had those little family customs that are a part of things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo have something that\u2019s focused on: \u201cWhat\u2019s this holiday all about?\u201d and to use it intentionally\u2014it feels awkward to us, as parents, I think, sometimes to do that with our kids. We don\u2019t have confidence. That\u2019s why to have a tool like this makes it easier for a parent that goes, \u201cI don\u2019t know what I\u2019m doing,\u201d but somebody says, \u201cHere just do this,\u201d and you go, \u201cOkay, I can do that\u201d; right?\u2014yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Because everybody\u2019s decorating for Christmas anyway.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Everybody has ornaments for their tree, so it\u2019s just not hard to communicate around something that\u2019s common across our culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve had, here on the table this week, four of the ornaments that you created. These are the \u201cAdvent Names of Jesus.\u201d They\u2019ve been hidden away in brown paper bags with numbers on them; and little boy Dave has been staring at them the whole time, [Laughter] going, \u201cWhen do I get to open another one?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> So the numbers represent what?\u2014each week?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014the Sundays of Advent; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes, so I\u2019m opening up number two.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> So the second Sunday of Advent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Let\u2019s pretend you just did this. Walk us through what you would do at this globe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Okay; I would say\u2014well, no; you\u2019re holding it\u2014so I would say: \u201cWhat does it say? Can you read us the name?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Am I supposed to be your child?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes, I think so. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> There you go; \u201cThe Word became flesh and dwelt among us\u2014John 1:14.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s the verse; the name\u2019s on the other side.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Turn it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> The name on the other side says\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Then you flip it over and it says, \u201cJesus is the Word.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014is the Word. I would ask, \u201cDo you know\u201d\u2014depending on the age of the child\u2014I would ask: \u201cWhat does it mean that Jesus is the Word? Do you know?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And a five-year-old says, \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> A five-year-old says, \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> A twenty-five year old might say the same thing. [Laughter] Seriously; really\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, yes; that\u2019s not a normal name\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014that people have, so we don\u2019t really know what that means. The set of ornaments comes with a small book. I\u2019ve written a story for each one of the names that you can read out loud with your kids that will help them understand. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut that particular name comes from the first chapter of John, where it says, \u201cAnd the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,\u201d and the Word means Jesus\u2014so just helping your children begin to understand that and what it means for Jesus to be the Word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you know, you stop and think about it, words are simply an assembling together of letters that are pointing to something bigger than what they are. We read a word, and something pops into our mind; we understand. If I say, \u201cchair,\u201d you have a picture now in your mind. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJesus as the Word\u2014theologians will look at this and they will say, \u201cThe Word is kind of God\u2019s big idea about what life, and meaning, and purpose,\u201d\u2014it's what God had in mind from the beginning. Jesus is God's big idea; when we talk about Him as the Word, it\u2019s what is in the mind of God from the beginning. So His incarnation, His death, and resurrection\u2014when we say, \u201cHe is the Word\u201d\u2014this is the plan of God, from the beginning: that He would come, that He would live a perfect life, that He would die a substitutionary death, and then be raised again to new life so that those who have been separated from him\/those who have been far off could be brought near.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Isn\u2019t He referred to as \u201cthe Word of life\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Absolutely; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> His words bring life. He shows us the way: the way to God, the way to live life, the way to withstand challenges. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis has been a tough year for our country. There's a lot of strife; there\u2019s been a lot of evil that has occurred in our country\u2014a lot of division, and there\u2019s a lot of misunderstanding. We need words\u2014we need <em>the <\/em>Word to bring healing and life to our country.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It\u2019s interesting, as you go look at John 1:14, I mean, you talk about a little Bible study you could have with your kids or with your adult kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cAnd the Word became flesh,\u201d\u2014there's the Christmas story in the very beginning of that verse\u2014\u201cAnd the word became incarnate\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cThe big idea became a human being.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right\u2014\u201cand dwelt among us,\u201d\u2014literally, pitched His tent in our neighborhood; came to live here. \u201cAnd we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.\u201d Boy, oh boy, you could talk for an hour. You could have a very interesting discussion with your children about: \u201cWhat\u2019s grace and truth?\u201d \u201cWhat does the Word really look like beyond just Christmas morning?\u2014just a baby in a manger?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I love verse 4 of John 1 because it says, \u201cThe Word gave life to everything that was created, and His life brought light to everyone.\u201d That is a great discussion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDave and I had three great conversation times; one was on the way to school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You\u2019re talking about with our kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014with your kids; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014with our kids. One was at dinner, and one was at bedtime. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I could see putting a bag on the kitchen table when we eat, or a bag on their beds at night, to talk about that; because kids don\u2019t want to go to bed when they\u2019re little. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> No; well, they\u2019re happy to talk if it\u2019ll mean staying awake longer; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Exactly; they want to talk about anything and everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> So they can drag this conversation on for a long time; then to pray about that. What a simple but great application of pouring into this next generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to read something; but it\u2019s too long, and we\u2019re going to take Swindoll\u2019s time, or Alistair Begg, or someone; so if you want to hear this, listen to the podcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, what is it we want to hear?
