We\u2019re going to talk with Alex Kendrick and one of the stars of the movie, Cameron Arnett, today. Stay with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Friday edition. Big day\u2014it\u2019s opening day for our friends, Alex and Stephen and Shannon Kendrick, the Kendrick brothers. They have a movie coming out today called <em>Overcomer<\/em>, which I\u2019ve seen; but you haven\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I can\u2019t wait to see it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You know what, Bob? We are movie people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You like going to the movies? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> So, we\u2019ll be sitting in the front row tonight with our big, jumbo popcorn\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; I can\u2019t wait. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014with butter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, you may need to get there early\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014because there is a lot of buzz about this film. As I said, I\u2019ve seen it; it really is a <em>great<\/em> film. We had a chance to screen this for an audience on board the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage cruise, back in February. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we\u2019re going to do today\u2014we\u2019re going to hear from Alex Kendrick, who is the star of the film; he is also the screenwriter and the director\u2014and one of the actors in the film. We talked with them after the screening. Let\u2019s just dive in and listen to the conversation we had after the audience had seen the film, <em>Overcomer<\/em>, which, again, is in theaters today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, I am here with an audience that has just seen a screening of the movie that\u2019s coming out this weekend, <em>Overcomer<\/em>. What did you guys think of the movie? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience:<\/strong> Woo! [Applause] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I have with me the screenwriter, the director, and the star of the movie, Alex Kendrick. [Applause] So, congratulations; <em>great<\/em> film. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Oh, man! What a crowd! I wish <em>all<\/em> of them could be like you! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I first heard you talking about this film and the idea for this film years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How does a movie go from an idea\u2014how does the idea you get in your head and how do you decide, \u201cThat\u2019s the one that needs to be a movie\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> We have <em>many<\/em> ideas, just among the brothers, and then we get <em>thousands<\/em> of ideas from other people. What we tend to do is\u2014we go through a season of prayer, saying, \u201cGod, what direction do we go in?\u201d After a <em>season<\/em>, He usually says, \u201cThis is the direction,\u201d and He gives us a <em>theme<\/em> and a message; so we begin pursuing that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis one originated in 2011, even before <em>War Room<\/em>. It was in the incubator all this time; so the Lord would say, \u201cOkay; now is the time.\u201d It\u2019s interesting to be how the Lord will prepare us to address a theme. Right now I would not have known in 2019 how our culture\u2019s dealing with identity but the Lord knew. So we made this film about identity and God\u2019s timing is perfect. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you just wake up one morning from a dream about a cross-country runner? How did\u2014I mean, where does that come from? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Well, the first time I had the imagery for a cross-country runner was in 2011. I didn\u2019t know what to do with it. Sometimes the Lord will give me something and I\u2019ll be like well, that\u2019s interesting.\u00a0 But after we did <em>War Room<\/em> and started praying, all these pieces started coming back. I was like, \u201cOh!\u201d It\u2019s like the Lord gives you 350 pieces of a puzzle but you don\u2019t really see it come together until the season He wants you to do it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You had an idea for a movie about cross-country; then, this overlap of identity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How did that get layered in?\u2014where did that come from? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> The identity portion came about a year-and-a-half ago, where I felt the Lord tugging on our hearts\u2014and Stephen and Shannon\u2014tugging on our hearts to talk about the fact that the Creator should be the One that gets to define His creation. When the rest of the world is saying, \u201cOh, it\u2019s whatever I feel like\u201d; or what culture says; or these back-and-forth waves of emotion that are going through our culture, ultimately, you have to have an anchor for your identity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Lord says, \u201cWhen you find your identity in Me\u2014because I created you\u2014you are the fullest version of yourself.\u201d We want people to find themselves in Christ, who died for them\/who loves them. When we find ourselves in Christ and live that way, that is the best version of ourselves\u2014really, the only real version of ourselves, I would say. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> People are always curious about the casting of these films. Your process is a little different than the normal Hollywood casting process. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> We ask everyone who wants to be in our film, \u201cIs there anything in your life that would prevent God from blessing your work on this movie?\u201d Because you cannot duplicate the favor of God. He either gives it or He doesn\u2019t. So we seek after that. We want the people that He wants in the movie. Part of that is having people who truly believe in the message that we are presenting. It\u2019s not a gig for them. So when you see Thomas in the movie talking about identity and talking about his relationship with God it doesn\u2019t come from just an acting role. It comes from his heart. Now, he is a good actor on top of that but we love the fact that the people\u2014Priscilla Shirer, Cameron Arnett, and the young lady who plays Hannah all of them are believers and we love that that comes across on the screen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Hannah is the heart of the movie. Tell us about where you found her and how you found her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<h5>\n\t\t\t\tAlex: That is Aryn Wright-Thompson. She\u2019s a 15-year-old girl from North Carolina. She came and auditioned. Her mother had just gone through heart surgery and she was at a very tender place trying to trust God with what\u2019s going to happen to my mom when she came to auditions. \n\t\t\t<\/h5>\n\t\t\t<h5>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/h5>\n\t\t\t<h5>\n\t\t\t\tWhen she did the scene in the film where she does the speech and drama class, \u201cThe Who Am I\u201d speech. Which is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. When she did that we about fell out of our chair because it was 100 percent authentic. \n\t\t\t<\/h5>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we asked about it she shared her testimony on how she learning to walk with God and she wanted to give God any desire to act and any skill she has. That won us over. Of course, we prayed about it as well. The Lord confirmed pretty quickly this is my one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe man who plays Thomas Hill\u2014I met at NRB a little over a year ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014National Religious Broadcasters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> He is an ordained minister. He has been an actor for some time and is just\u2014he is just ready for his breakout role. He loves the Lord, and I hope it is this one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, would you like to meet Cameron Arnett? [Applause] Cameron, come on up here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> They put me in the hot seat. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You saw the movie for the first time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> First time, yesterday. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was it like for you to watch this film for the first time? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> Well, you saw the result\u2014I came up on stage and could not speak; I\u2019m rarely speechless. It just <em>wowed<\/em> me to see it for the first time\u2014to realize what God did. As Alex was saying\u2014the coordination\/how God puts things together\u2014you cannot deny. To see the final result on the screen, I\u2019m as blown away as anybody else is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you bumped into Alex Kendrick at the National Religious Broadcasters convention\u2014[Laughter]\u2014you\u2019re an actor; you\u2019re familiar with the Kendrick brothers\/their movies. There had to be a little voice inside of you going, \u201cOh, don\u2019t blow this, man\u201d; right? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> I\u2019m part of a group called ICVM, so we had to be at NRB. I\u2019m at the hotel, and God\/the Holy Spirit is prompting me\u2014I mean, all day long: \u201cGo. Go to the other hotel; go to the other hotel.\u201d I don\u2019t, and I\u2019m <em>tired<\/em>. <em>Finally<\/em>, I said, \u201cOkay,\u201d\u2014I decided. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI get out of my hotel, get in the car, drive over. As I am getting on the escalator\u2014I put my foot on the platform\u2014and I hear, \u201cCameron Arnett!\u201d I shook; I\u2019m looking at Alex. I\u2019m thinking, \u201cDid Alex Kendrick just yell my name?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cjust call my name?!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> Right? He said: \u201cOh, I\u2019m\u2014what are you doing in the next ten minutes? What are you doing in the next ten?\u201d I\u2019m thinking to myself\u2014you know how you watch the video\u2014and I\u2019m saying: \u201cDude, my feet are going to be planted right here; okay? I don\u2019t care what you\u2019re doing. I\u2019ll be here when you come out.\u201d He came out, and we went to eat something. Basically, he told me the whole story. I\u2019m crying while he\u2019s telling me this story; at the same time, thinking, \u201cGod, what are You doing?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; your acting goes back a couple of decades. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, <em>Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> \u2014<em>The Next Generation<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right? So, yes; yes; somebody going, \u201cI remember him in that\u201d; yes. [Applause] <em>Doogie Howser<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> <em>Doogie Howser<\/em>, <em>China Beach<\/em>, <em>Miami Vice<\/em>\u2014all the above. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How did you get into the business, and were you a Christian back then? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> I\u2014you know how we are\u2014I knew about God, but I didn\u2019t know God like I know Him now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> So, back in college, I was a pre-med\/pre-law student in college. I answered an ad during the summer for the first time: \u201cModels and actors wanted\u201d\u2014that kind of thing. I wanted to do something just for fun that was different, so I entered that competition; and I ended up winning. I ended up entering another ten competitions and won eight out of ten. It kind of started to take off; so I moved out of the whole realm of the doctor and all that stuff I had in my mind, which I really didn\u2019t want to do anyway. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI ended up in New York; I ended up in California, doing all these episodic roles. I went to\/I was at\u2014in Toronto, Canada. I was doing a movie of the week. From that, I came back to California. They called me in for my first television series, which would have been my starring role. I got the role; everything was fine. I\u2019m auditioning against all these other people that you know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRight before I signed on the dotted line, they said, \u201cOh, by the way, we want you to do partial-body nudity.\u201d This was when, you know, cable and regular TV were really at odds with each other; TV is trying to keep up with cable. When they told me that, you know, I felt that little tap on the shoulder by God, saying, \u201cIt\u2019s time to get out of the system.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> When I told them that I couldn\u2019t do it, they said, \u201cWell, you know, we\u2019ll give you a body double.\u201d When they gave me the body double, the Lord said to me, \u201cWell, you have to even shun the appearance of evil or people will think it is <em>you<\/em>.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> So, I left everything; I chose Christ. [Applause] You know, I ended up sleeping in the back room of a woman, who was on welfare. I lost a big house, Mercedes\u2014everything. I went to teach at a small church; God said, \u201cIf you really believe Me, go do that.\u201d I started teaching at a small church, and people started to live; the church started to thrive. God called me to that, and I went to full-time ministry for like 16\/17 years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI left California, came to Atlanta, met this beautiful woman over here\u2014where did she go? Oh, there she is! That\u2019s my beautiful, lovely\u2014[Applause]\u2014God\u2019s gift to me. We got married; started two different churches, left the\u2014never thought I\u2019d be doing this again\u2014around 2013, God sent us back into the Christian side of things. I\u2019ve been doing Christian films ever since. This is probably about my 15<sup>th<\/sup> Christian film. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen Alex said, \u201cCameron Arnett,\u201d I <em>knew<\/em> my life had changed. That\u2019s\u2014you know, I\u2019m still kind of reeling, because it\u2019s still surreal to me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You [Alex] come up to a weekend like this weekend, and you can\u2019t do anything at this point to affect what happens this weekend. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Pray. [Laughter] We can pray. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you find\u2014do you find your identity connected to what\u2019s going to happen this weekend? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Perfect question because I even asked myself when the Lord said, \u201cThis is the path you are going to take on identity.\u201d I had to ask myself, \u201cIf I am <em>never<\/em> allowed to do another movie, or act, or direct, or even another book again, do I still know who I am?\u201d because most of us put our identity in what we <em>do<\/em>, or in our position, or some measure of success; but the Lord says, \u201cYou put your identity in <em>Me<\/em> first.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen my identity is in Christ, and that is my foundation, everything else on top of that may shift or change; but I should still know who I am because I find myself in Christ; and Jesus doesn\u2019t change; right? So, He is my rock. Even for me, making this movie, I went back and I had to ask myself: \u201cIs my identity in the correct order?\u2014the Lord is first; He is my foundation\u2014then I\u2019m a husband and a father\u2014and then I\u2019m a filmmaker, and author, and all these other things.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen it\u2019s in the right order, and life does allow things to change\u2014we all go through ups and downs\u2014but when my identity is in Christ, that shouldn\u2019t change. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> Amen; amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you can say that, here, on this side of this weekend; but if I call you Monday\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> \u2014it didn\u2019t do well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014it does not do as well as you\u2019d hoped\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> \u2014then I <em>should<\/em> have the same answer: \u201cPraise God!\u201d either way: \u201cI\u2019m still saved. He is still my Savior. I still know where my eternal home is and where my value lies.\u201d [Applause] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There was a scene in the film that, as I watched it, I thought, \u201cIn terms of plot and development, you probably could have taken that scene out, but you left it in.\u201d The scene I\u2019m thinking of is the scene where you and your wife have conflict in the film. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Why did you decide, \u201cI want that scene to stay in this film\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s a great question. I\u2019m going to admit to you\u2014I have multiple motives. The first one is to tackle identity\u2014for John\u2019s side, his identity\u2014and the Lord is allowing this\u2014his identity is crumbling. All the things I was grabbing hold of to be a successful basketball coach are being ripped away until his team is ripped away, and he has no season; there is no team anymore. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, now, he has to do something he doesn\u2019t want to do; he has no confidence in and doesn\u2019t see any way to win. For a guy to be told, \u201cThis is what you have to do, but there is no way to win,\u201d\u2014wow; that\u2019s frustrating\u2014[Laughter]\u2014<em>really<\/em> frustrating. So, he\u2019s discouraged. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, in the scene with his wife\u2014and his wife comes out to talk to him\u2014he, essentially, is a jerk to his wife because he\u2019s so down. His wife comes back out to talk to him. She could have played the card of: \u201cYou owe me an apology\u201d; because he <em>did<\/em> owe her an apology\u2014right?\u2014but she doesn\u2019t do that. She plays the <em>love<\/em> card instead. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe scene is cute, because she comes out there. First, she sits across from him\u2014about eight feet across. Then she scoots up until she\u2019s about four feet across. He\u2019s thinking, \u201cOkay; don\u2019t get in my space.\u201d [Laughter] Then she comes right in his space, as a woman would do,\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> \u2014right up next to him. Once she invades his space, and he\u2019s ready for another argument, she doesn\u2019t go there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> She doesn\u2019t pull out the ammunition. She plays the love card, and it makes him melt. That is a reminder to me, even when I was working on it, of sometimes how marriage should be. Even when you have ammunition against your spouse, sometimes, you drop it; you play the love card. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s why I <em>loved<\/em> that scene\/loved the fact that it was still in the film. What I really loved was how you ended that scene, with two boys watching mom and dad. [Applause] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> You know, that\u2019s a great point. We wanted to show that in the movie, where there are two sons in the movie\u2014see them fight and, then, see them make up. Wow; more than your words\u2014when we display to our children how to love, that makes a bigger impact. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I also thought\u2014and again, because I\u2019m looking at marriage and parenting every time I watch movies like this\u2014here are two kids facing disappointment. Instead of having these kids spin out into the wrong behavior, as kids will often do when they experience disappointment, you had these two young men step up and be godly young men in the midst of this. It was <em>refreshing<\/em> to watch them do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Yes; so, you know, the older son, who was wanting a basketball scholarship\u2014and he\u2019s a senior when his team is lost\u2014at first, he is selfish and discouraged; but then\u2014and he even tries to run cross country\u2014he realizes: \u201cWow! This is not for me. This is <em>way<\/em> harder than I thought\u201d; but he can do <em>something<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> He realizes: \u201cMy parents still love me. My performance on the court or off the court is not going to change my parents\u2019 love. What can I do?\u201d He begins to come out and support and love Hannah who, initially, has no support. He gets some other citizens to do the same thing, which is a very unselfish act. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We have to, again, in the midst of this, just remind viewers this is an important weekend. A lot of folks will see something like this come out; and they\u2019ll say: \u201cWe\u2019ll catch this in a couple of weeks,\u201d or \u201cWe\u2019ll catch this when it comes out on DVD or on TV.\u201d That\u2019s all fine; but if you want to see movies like this in theaters, this is where we need to come out and support a film like this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> This is one of the reasons <em>why<\/em>\u2014if you are hoping it impacts as many people as possible, there is what they call \u201cChase money at the ready.\u201d When the movie comes out in a certain number of theaters, if it hits a certain mark of performance that weekend, the chase money is activated; the theaters expand, and they include more cities and even more territories overseas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if you\u2019re hoping this impacts even more areas\u2014that it starts more conversations on identity; more people hear Priscilla Shirer walk somebody through the plan of salvation\u2014then support it, opening weekend; because it helps to launch it higher and further and more territories are reached. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; so the fact that all of you have seen it does not let you off the hook; right? [Laughter] You\u2019ve got to come back out to the theater. You\u2019ve got to bring your friends, and come out and see this. [Applause] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, again, we\u2019ve been listening to a conversation with Alex Kendrick and Cameron Arnett from the movie, <em>Overcomer<\/em>, that is opening in theaters tonight. It was\u2014here\u2019s what was interesting to me. After seeing the movie, it was like everywhere I went, we were having conversations about identity\u2014not with people who had seen the film\u2014but it was like God was raising identity issues all over the place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you remember our conversation with Jackie Hill Perry, which was all about identity; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I feel like, in our country, identity is a topic that is a <em>buzz<\/em> right now\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014in the secular world and the Christian world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you understand who you are at the core and live out of that, it does change everything. When we understand that who we are at the core is adopted sons and daughters of the King, who have been brought into His family that transforms the way we live our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It\u2019s great to think that you\u2019re going to walk out of a theater and start talking about identity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You know, of all places to start that conversation, you don\u2019t often think of a movie. So, again, I can\u2019t wait to see that; because, I mean, identity is the <em>foundation<\/em> of living life and living, definitely, the Christian life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Will you get the big bucket of popcorn? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes, Bob! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that you can go back and get refills on?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Here is the funny thing\u2014every time we go, we\u2019re like: \u201cDon\u2019t get the big one. Don\u2019t get the big one.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And we do every time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And we walk out\u2014and I\u2019m not telling listeners to do that\u2014but we get the big one, and we put all the butter on it. Then we get\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the refill? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014to balance it out, we get the Diet Coke<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014[Laughter]\u2014because that makes it <em>work<\/em>. You can get all the butter and popcorn as long as you get the Diet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We can go to movies together\u2014you and me\u2014because I\u2019m right there with you, buddy, on that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; me too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Alright. Well, again, it\u2019s in theaters today. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I first heard you talking about this film and the idea for this film years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How does a movie go from an idea\u2014how does the idea you get in your head and how do you decide, \u201cThat\u2019s the one that needs to be a movie\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> We have <em>many<\/em> ideas, just among the brothers, and then we get <em>thousands<\/em> of ideas from other people. What we tend to do is\u2014we go through a season of prayer, saying, \u201cGod, what direction do we go in?\u201d After a <em>season<\/em>, He usually says, \u201cThis is the direction,\u201d and He gives us a <em>theme<\/em> and a message; so we begin pursuing that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis one originated in 2011, even before <em>War Room<\/em>. It was in the incubator all this time; so the Lord would say, \u201cOkay; now is the time.\u201d It\u2019s interesting to be how the Lord will prepare us to address a theme. Right now I would not have known in 2019 how our culture\u2019s dealing with identity but the Lord knew. So we made this film about identity and God\u2019s timing is perfect. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you just wake up one morning from a dream about a cross-country runner? How did\u2014I mean, where does that come from? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Well, the first time I had the imagery for a cross-country runner was in 2011. I didn\u2019t know what to do with it. Sometimes the Lord will give me something and I\u2019ll be like well, that\u2019s interesting.\u00a0 But after we did <em>War Room<\/em> and started praying, all these pieces started coming back. I was like, \u201cOh!\u201d It\u2019s like the Lord gives you 350 pieces of a puzzle but you don\u2019t really see it come together until the season He wants you to do it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You had an idea for a movie about cross-country; then, this overlap of identity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How did that get layered in?\u2014where did that come from? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> The identity portion came about a year-and-a-half ago, where I felt the Lord tugging on our hearts\u2014and Stephen and Shannon\u2014tugging on our hearts to talk about the fact that the Creator should be the One that gets to define His creation. When the rest of the world is saying, \u201cOh, it\u2019s whatever I feel like\u201d; or what culture says; or these back-and-forth waves of emotion that are going through our culture, ultimately, you have to have an anchor for your identity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Lord says, \u201cWhen you find your identity in Me\u2014because I created you\u2014you are the fullest version of yourself.\u201d We want people to find themselves in Christ, who died for them\/who loves them. When we find ourselves in Christ and live that way, that is the best version of ourselves\u2014really, the only real version of ourselves, I would say. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> People are always curious about the casting of these films. Your process is a little different than the normal Hollywood casting process. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> We ask everyone who wants to be in our film, \u201cIs there anything in your life that would prevent God from blessing your work on this movie?\u201d Because you cannot duplicate the favor of God. He either gives it or He doesn\u2019t. So we seek after that. We want the people that He wants in the movie. Part of that is having people who truly believe in the message that we are presenting. It\u2019s not a gig for them. So when you see Thomas in the movie talking about identity and talking about his relationship with God it doesn\u2019t come from just an acting role. It comes from his heart. Now, he is a good actor on top of that but we love the fact that the people\u2014Priscilla Shirer, Cameron Arnett, and the young lady who plays Hannah all of them are believers and we love that that comes across on the screen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Hannah is the heart of the movie. Tell us about where you found her and how you found her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<h5>\n\t\t\t\tAlex: That is Aryn Wright-Thompson. She\u2019s a 15-year-old girl from North Carolina. She came and auditioned. Her mother had just gone through heart surgery and she was at a very tender place trying to trust God with what\u2019s going to happen to my mom when she came to auditions. \n\t\t\t<\/h5>\n\t\t\t<h5>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/h5>\n\t\t\t<h5>\n\t\t\t\tWhen she did the scene in the film where she does the speech and drama class, \u201cThe Who Am I\u201d speech. Which is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. When she did that we about fell out of our chair because it was 100 percent authentic. \n\t\t\t<\/h5>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we asked about it she shared her testimony on how she learning to walk with God and she wanted to give God any desire to act and any skill she has. That won us over. Of course, we prayed about it as well. The Lord confirmed pretty quickly this is my one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe man who plays Thomas Hill\u2014I met at NRB a little over a year ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014National Religious Broadcasters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> He is an ordained minister. He has been an actor for some time and is just\u2014he is just ready for his breakout role. He loves the Lord, and I hope it is this one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, would you like to meet Cameron Arnett? [Applause] Cameron, come on up here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> They put me in the hot seat. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You saw the movie for the first time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> First time, yesterday. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was it like for you to watch this film for the first time? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> Well, you saw the result\u2014I came up on stage and could not speak; I\u2019m rarely speechless. It just <em>wowed<\/em> me to see it for the first time\u2014to realize what God did. As Alex was saying\u2014the coordination\/how God puts things together\u2014you cannot deny. To see the final result on the screen, I\u2019m as blown away as anybody else is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you bumped into Alex Kendrick at the National Religious Broadcasters convention\u2014[Laughter]\u2014you\u2019re an actor; you\u2019re familiar with the Kendrick brothers\/their movies. There had to be a little voice inside of you going, \u201cOh, don\u2019t blow this, man\u201d; right? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> I\u2019m part of a group called ICVM, so we had to be at NRB. I\u2019m at the hotel, and God\/the Holy Spirit is prompting me\u2014I mean, all day long: \u201cGo. Go to the other hotel; go to the other hotel.\u201d I don\u2019t, and I\u2019m <em>tired<\/em>. <em>Finally<\/em>, I said, \u201cOkay,\u201d\u2014I decided. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI get out of my hotel, get in the car, drive over. As I am getting on the escalator\u2014I put my foot on the platform\u2014and I hear, \u201cCameron Arnett!\u201d I shook; I\u2019m looking at Alex. I\u2019m thinking, \u201cDid Alex Kendrick just yell my name?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cjust call my name?!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> Right? He said: \u201cOh, I\u2019m\u2014what are you doing in the next ten minutes? What are you doing in the next ten?\u201d I\u2019m thinking to myself\u2014you know how you watch the video\u2014and I\u2019m saying: \u201cDude, my feet are going to be planted right here; okay? I don\u2019t care what you\u2019re doing. I\u2019ll be here when you come out.\u201d He came out, and we went to eat something. Basically, he told me the whole story. I\u2019m crying while he\u2019s telling me this story; at the same time, thinking, \u201cGod, what are You doing?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; your acting goes back a couple of decades. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, <em>Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> \u2014<em>The Next Generation<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right? So, yes; yes; somebody going, \u201cI remember him in that\u201d; yes. [Applause] <em>Doogie Howser<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> <em>Doogie Howser<\/em>, <em>China Beach<\/em>, <em>Miami Vice<\/em>\u2014all the above. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How did you get into the business, and were you a Christian back then? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> I\u2014you know how we are\u2014I knew about God, but I didn\u2019t know God like I know Him now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> So, back in college, I was a pre-med\/pre-law student in college. I answered an ad during the summer for the first time: \u201cModels and actors wanted\u201d\u2014that kind of thing. I wanted to do something just for fun that was different, so I entered that competition; and I ended up winning. I ended up entering another ten competitions and won eight out of ten. It kind of started to take off; so I moved out of the whole realm of the doctor and all that stuff I had in my mind, which I really didn\u2019t want to do anyway. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI ended up in New York; I ended up in California, doing all these episodic roles. I went to\/I was at\u2014in Toronto, Canada. I was doing a movie of the week. From that, I came back to California. They called me in for my first television series, which would have been my starring role. I got the role; everything was fine. I\u2019m auditioning against all these other people that you know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRight before I signed on the dotted line, they said, \u201cOh, by the way, we want you to do partial-body nudity.\u201d This was when, you know, cable and regular TV were really at odds with each other; TV is trying to keep up with cable. When they told me that, you know, I felt that little tap on the shoulder by God, saying, \u201cIt\u2019s time to get out of the system.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> When I told them that I couldn\u2019t do it, they said, \u201cWell, you know, we\u2019ll give you a body double.\u201d When they gave me the body double, the Lord said to me, \u201cWell, you have to even shun the appearance of evil or people will think it is <em>you<\/em>.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> So, I left everything; I chose Christ. [Applause] You know, I ended up sleeping in the back room of a woman, who was on welfare. I lost a big house, Mercedes\u2014everything. I went to teach at a small church; God said, \u201cIf you really believe Me, go do that.\u201d I started teaching at a small church, and people started to live; the church started to thrive. God called me to that, and I went to full-time ministry for like 16\/17 years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI left California, came to Atlanta, met this beautiful woman over here\u2014where did she go? Oh, there she is! That\u2019s my beautiful, lovely\u2014[Applause]\u2014God\u2019s gift to me. We got married; started two different churches, left the\u2014never thought I\u2019d be doing this again\u2014around 2013, God sent us back into the Christian side of things. I\u2019ve been doing Christian films ever since. This is probably about my 15<sup>th<\/sup> Christian film. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen Alex said, \u201cCameron Arnett,\u201d I <em>knew<\/em> my life had changed. That\u2019s\u2014you know, I\u2019m still kind of reeling, because it\u2019s still surreal to me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You [Alex] come up to a weekend like this weekend, and you can\u2019t do anything at this point to affect what happens this weekend. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Pray. [Laughter] We can pray. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you find\u2014do you find your identity connected to what\u2019s going to happen this weekend? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Perfect question because I even asked myself when the Lord said, \u201cThis is the path you are going to take on identity.\u201d I had to ask myself, \u201cIf I am <em>never<\/em> allowed to do another movie, or act, or direct, or even another book again, do I still know who I am?\u201d because most of us put our identity in what we <em>do<\/em>, or in our position, or some measure of success; but the Lord says, \u201cYou put your identity in <em>Me<\/em> first.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen my identity is in Christ, and that is my foundation, everything else on top of that may shift or change; but I should still know who I am because I find myself in Christ; and Jesus doesn\u2019t change; right? So, He is my rock. Even for me, making this movie, I went back and I had to ask myself: \u201cIs my identity in the correct order?\u2014the Lord is first; He is my foundation\u2014then I\u2019m a husband and a father\u2014and then I\u2019m a filmmaker, and author, and all these other things.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen it\u2019s in the right order, and life does allow things to change\u2014we all go through ups and downs\u2014but when my identity is in Christ, that shouldn\u2019t change. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong> Amen; amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you can say that, here, on this side of this weekend; but if I call you Monday\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> \u2014it didn\u2019t do well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014it does not do as well as you\u2019d hoped\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> \u2014then I <em>should<\/em> have the same answer: \u201cPraise God!\u201d either way: \u201cI\u2019m still saved. He is still my Savior. I still know where my eternal home is and where my value lies.\u201d [Applause] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There was a scene in the film that, as I watched it, I thought, \u201cIn terms of plot and development, you probably could have taken that scene out, but you left it in.\u201d The scene I\u2019m thinking of is the scene where you and your wife have conflict in the film. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Why did you decide, \u201cI want that scene to stay in this film\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s a great question. I\u2019m going to admit to you\u2014I have multiple motives. The first one is to tackle identity\u2014for John\u2019s side, his identity\u2014and the Lord is allowing this\u2014his identity is crumbling. All the things I was grabbing hold of to be a successful basketball coach are being ripped away until his team is ripped away, and he has no season; there is no team anymore. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, now, he has to do something he doesn\u2019t want to do; he has no confidence in and doesn\u2019t see any way to win. For a guy to be told, \u201cThis is what you have to do, but there is no way to win,\u201d\u2014wow; that\u2019s frustrating\u2014[Laughter]\u2014<em>really<\/em> frustrating. So, he\u2019s discouraged. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, in the scene with his wife\u2014and his wife comes out to talk to him\u2014he, essentially, is a jerk to his wife because he\u2019s so down. His wife comes back out to talk to him. She could have played the card of: \u201cYou owe me an apology\u201d; because he <em>did<\/em> owe her an apology\u2014right?\u2014but she doesn\u2019t do that. She plays the <em>love<\/em> card instead. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe scene is cute, because she comes out there. First, she sits across from him\u2014about eight feet across. Then she scoots up until she\u2019s about four feet across. He\u2019s thinking, \u201cOkay; don\u2019t get in my space.\u201d [Laughter] Then she comes right in his space, as a woman would do,\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> \u2014right up next to him. Once she invades his space, and he\u2019s ready for another argument, she doesn\u2019t go there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> She doesn\u2019t pull out the ammunition. She plays the love card, and it makes him melt. That is a reminder to me, even when I was working on it, of sometimes how marriage should be. Even when you have ammunition against your spouse, sometimes, you drop it; you play the love card. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s why I <em>loved<\/em> that scene\/loved the fact that it was still in the film. What I really loved was how you ended that scene, with two boys watching mom and dad. [Applause] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> You know, that\u2019s a great point. We wanted to show that in the movie, where there are two sons in the movie\u2014see them fight and, then, see them make up. Wow; more than your words\u2014when we display to our children how to love, that makes a bigger impact. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I also thought\u2014and again, because I\u2019m looking at marriage and parenting every time I watch movies like this\u2014here are two kids facing disappointment. Instead of having these kids spin out into the wrong behavior, as kids will often do when they experience disappointment, you had these two young men step up and be godly young men in the midst of this. It was <em>refreshing<\/em> to watch them do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> Yes; so, you know, the older son, who was wanting a basketball scholarship\u2014and he\u2019s a senior when his team is lost\u2014at first, he is selfish and discouraged; but then\u2014and he even tries to run cross country\u2014he realizes: \u201cWow! This is not for me. This is <em>way<\/em> harder than I thought\u201d; but he can do <em>something<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> He realizes: \u201cMy parents still love me. My performance on the court or off the court is not going to change my parents\u2019 love. What can I do?\u201d He begins to come out and support and love Hannah who, initially, has no support. He gets some other citizens to do the same thing, which is a very unselfish act. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We have to, again, in the midst of this, just remind viewers this is an important weekend. A lot of folks will see something like this come out; and they\u2019ll say: \u201cWe\u2019ll catch this in a couple of weeks,\u201d or \u201cWe\u2019ll catch this when it comes out on DVD or on TV.\u201d That\u2019s all fine; but if you want to see movies like this in theaters, this is where we need to come out and support a film like this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> This is one of the reasons <em>why<\/em>\u2014if you are hoping it impacts as many people as possible, there is what they call \u201cChase money at the ready.\u201d When the movie comes out in a certain number of theaters, if it hits a certain mark of performance that weekend, the chase money is activated; the theaters expand, and they include more cities and even more territories overseas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if you\u2019re hoping this impacts even more areas\u2014that it starts more conversations on identity; more people hear Priscilla Shirer walk somebody through the plan of salvation\u2014then support it, opening weekend; because it helps to launch it higher and further and more territories are reached. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; so the fact that all of you have seen it does not let you off the hook; right? [Laughter] You\u2019ve got to come back out to the theater. You\u2019ve got to bring your friends, and come out and see this. [Applause] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, again, we\u2019ve been listening to a conversation with Alex Kendrick and Cameron Arnett from the movie, <em>Overcomer<\/em>, that is opening in theaters tonight. It was\u2014here\u2019s what was interesting to me. After seeing the movie, it was like everywhere I went, we were having conversations about identity\u2014not with people who had seen the film\u2014but it was like God was raising identity issues all over the place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you remember our conversation with Jackie Hill Perry, which was all about identity; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I feel like, in our country, identity is a topic that is a <em>buzz<\/em> right now\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014in the secular world and the Christian world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you understand who you are at the core and live out of that, it does change everything. When we understand that who we are at the core is adopted sons and daughters of the King, who have been brought into His family that transforms the way we live our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It\u2019s great to think that you\u2019re going to walk out of a theater and start talking about identity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> You know, of all places to start that conversation, you don\u2019t often think of a movie. So, again, I can\u2019t wait to see that; because, I mean, identity is the <em>foundation<\/em> of living life and living, definitely, the Christian life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Will you get the big bucket of popcorn? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes, Bob! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that you can go back and get refills on?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Here is the funny thing\u2014every time we go, we\u2019re like: \u201cDon\u2019t get the big one. Don\u2019t get the big one.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And we do every time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And we walk out\u2014and I\u2019m not telling listeners to do that\u2014but we get the big one, and we put all the butter on it. Then we get\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the refill? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014to balance it out, we get the Diet Coke<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014[Laughter]\u2014because that makes it <em>work<\/em>. You can get all the butter and popcorn as long as you get the Diet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We can go to movies together\u2014you and me\u2014because I\u2019m right there with you, buddy, on that.
