[Laughter] We\u2019re going to call on all of our listeners to get out their weed whackers and go to work on those things\u2014what the Bible says: \u201cThose things that can so easily entangle.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014entangle; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I tell you, Bob. You should see my wife with weed whacker. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I\u2019m good at this. I like it, too. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I am not kidding. Our whole neighborhood watches her go out there. She, like, knocks down <em>trees<\/em> and mailbox posts. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What is it about the weed whacker that you like? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> She loves it! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I like those tools. I like to see the before and after. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Mary Ann is the same way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Is she? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; she\u2014we\u2019ve got one of those rechargeable weed-whacker things. She loves to get out and tear it up; and loves to be able to look at it and go,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u201cLook at what I did.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cI\u2019ve <em>accomplished<\/em> something here today.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Me, too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019re going to talk\u2014not about cleaning your garden today\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but we are going to talk about how you cultivate your life and deal with the weeds that grow up because those weeds\/those sins\u2014those patterns\/those habit patterns in our lives\u2014can so easily entangle us unless we are being proactive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Just like a yard\u2014if you don\u2019t deal with it quickly\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014and maintain it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014and take care of it, that weed can choke out life. I\u2019ve seen it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTemptation\u2014this is what this day is about\u2014is something that we play with, and it\u2019s going to <em>get<\/em> you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, here is who we are going to hear from today. We\u2019re going to hear from a movie star; I mean, he really is! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes; he is! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Alex Kendrick is part of the Kendrick brothers\u2019 movie team. This was a <em>men\u2019s<\/em> session that he did; it was all about cleaning up the weeds in the garden. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> At my house in Albany, Georgia, we have a large playground that my wife and I built for our kids, some nine years ago. Right next to the playground, I built a six-and-half foot tall wooden fence. On the other side of my fence was my neighbor\u2019s regular-sized, chain-link fence. Between those two fences is about four inches. I got along with my neighbor; but about a year\/year-and-a-half ago, I noticed that something was growing between the two fences. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs the months went by, I noticed this <em>weed<\/em> was starting to look like a small tree; right? This is a gnarly-looking bush, and it really <em>irritated<\/em> me. I would go out there\u2014trim it back; trim it back. This past summer, when we went to shoot <em>Overcomer<\/em> in Columbus, Georgia, my family basically <em>moved<\/em> up to Columbus from Albany. When we get back home, and I get to the backyard, my wife says: \u201cAlex! What in the world?!\u201d This <em>thing<\/em> has taken over the fence. When I go around the fence to look between the two fences, I see this thing is now a <em>trunk<\/em>. I was like: \u201cThat\u2019s it. I\u2019ve got to do <em>something<\/em> about this weed.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI get a yard guy to come over; right? This guy comes over. He starts working on it. He stays out there for <em>hours<\/em> and <em>hours<\/em> until he finally finishes. He comes to my door and knocks on the door. I come out to meet him. He says, \u201cIt\u2019s done.\u201d He says, \u201cThat\u2019s about the hardest thing I\u2019ve ever done as far as yardwork.\u201d It cost me more than I wanted to pay\u2014because I\u2019ve got to pay him well for this hard work; right? Why did it cost so much?\u2014why was it so hard to dig up?\u2014why was it so ugly?\u2014because I had allowed it to grow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn my personal Bible study, I kept coming across a phrase in the Old Testament\u2014it is also found in the New Testament\u2014talking about when sin comes to full bloom or full measure. Then, God comes in and does something drastic. I began to see this pattern, where God would say\u2014of something that began to spring up in regard to sin\u2014and God would say: \u201cHey, deal with this. Deal with this, My people, Israel\u201d\u2014or even other nations\/other cities, like the Amorites, or Nineveh, or Egypt, Edom, Moab. Occasionally, through the Old Testament, God says, \u201cHey, deal with this.\u201d He would give shots across the bow to say: \u201cThis needs to be uprooted. This needs to be dealt with.\u201d He would send prophet, after prophet, after prophet as He did with Israel and Judah. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost of the time, what would they do?\u2014they\u2019d let it keep growing; let it keep growing. Then I see this concept, that he says several times, where\u2014when it finally comes to blossom or full fruition\/full measure\u2014God brings in His backhoe; and He takes it out completely. It\u2019s, usually, <em>devastating<\/em> to the people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to remind you\u2014in the case of Israel, God led them out of Egypt. When they finally get to the Promised Land\u2014Joshua\u2019s bringing them into the Promised Land\u2014and God says\u2014what?\u2014He says: \u201cThis is now your land. Go in and annihilate everybody, and you take over.\u201d There were godless nations there with detestable sins. \u201cI\u2019m giving this land to you\u201d; so they go; and they start wiping one city out after another. He establishes them; and He says: \u201cI am your God, and you are My people. Do not engage with the godless nations around you and their immorality or their idol worship.\u201d He made it very clear, <em>numerous<\/em> times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, eventually, after obeying the Lord\/walking with Him for a while, what do the Israelite men do?\u2014start looking over the borders. They start checking out what their neighbors are doing: \u201cHey, guys, you\u2014come here! You see what these women are doing over here with their little idol worship and these dances. Hey, let\u2019s go check this out!\u201d At first, they are not <em>engaging<\/em>; but they are observing. Then, these nations start asking them to come participate. At first, they are like, \u201cNo; we don\u2019t do that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut little by little, the godless nations and their practices start creeping in on Israel and Judah until, eventually, they are <em>fully<\/em> engaged with same detestable sins. What does God do? He sees it springing up; and He sends prophet after prophet: \u201cCome back to Me. Uproot this. Come back to Me. I am your God. You are my people. I am the One that blesses you; I am the one that protects you; I am God; there is no other.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what do they do?\u2014they stiffen their neck; and they allow sin to grow, and grow, and grow. When it comes to full blossom, what does God do?\u2014He sends in His backhoe, and it is devastating. In Ezekiel 7:5-10, listen to what God says through the prophet Ezekiel: \u201cThis is what the sovereign Lord says: \u2018Disaster\u2014unheard of disaster! See, it comes. The end has come; it has roused itself against you. Doom has come upon you, upon you who dwell in this land. The time has come; the day is here. There will be panic, not joy in the land. I am about to pour out My wrath on you, and spend My anger against you. I will judge you according to your conduct and will repay you for all your detestable practices. I will not look on you with pity. I will not spare you.\u2019\u201d He\u2019s not just trimming back anymore. He\u2019s uprooting from the ground up: \u201cI will not spare you; I will repay you for your conduct\u2014for your detestable practices. Then you will know that I am the Lord. The day is here. Doom has burst forth.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, listen to this: \u201cThe rod has budded; arrogance has now blossomed.\u201d There it is again\u2014God says: \u201cI\u2019m seeing your sin. Your arrogance has now blossomed.\u201d Something sprouts; God says, \u201cTake care of it.\u201d If they don\u2019t take care of it, He starts sending warning shots\u2014He starts sending His prophets: \u201cDeal with it now. Deal with it early. Uproot it <em>now<\/em>.\u201d When they didn\u2019t, and it came to full blossom\/full fruition, God comes in; because He is a <em>just<\/em> God, and He deals with it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s interesting that He says this about the Amorites. Before Joshua took the people of Canaan\u2014the Amorites\u2014God was giving <em>them<\/em> time to come back to Him. He, actually, says this in Genesis 15:16: \u201cI\u2019m not dealing with them yet for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full fruition.\u201d Another verse says, \u201cfull measure.\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat?!\u201d In His mercy, He was still giving them time: \u201cRepent.\u201d He says, \u201cThe sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure\u201d; but when it did, He told the Israelites, \u201cWipe them all out.\u201d Again, when God brings in His backhoe, nothing is left. Blossoming sin leads to death. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI noticed this in Scripture\u2014this pattern over and over\u2014and I\u2019m going to give you the six stages of sin. The first stage is: \u201cThought and temptation.\u201d Now, this is not sin, <em>yet<\/em>. It\u2019s just the thought that comes into your mind or the temptation presents itself. Jesus was tempted but did not sin. The first stage is thought and temptation; but if we don\u2019t <em>reject<\/em> it, it leads to the second stage, where you allow it to \u201cConceive.\u201d Now, at this stage, usually, sin stays hidden. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStage Three: \u201cYou allow it to grow.\u201d Now, this is where I would use the term, a toehold. It\u2019s when the door is cracked, and sin just gets a little bit of a toehold in there. At this stage, which is Stage Three, God usually starts to send conviction: \u201cHey, stop this. Come back to Me.\u201d In other words, the weed is starting to grow. God sees it; you know it; He starts to send conviction\u2014if you are a child of God, by the way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStage Four: If you still do not do anything about it, Stage Four is when you begin to \u201cNurture it.\u201d This is when it goes from a toehold to a foothold. The door opens a little bit more, and that toe slides right in there. It\u2019s starting to try to squeeze in the door. Sin is looking to take over. God\u2019s warnings become more prominent, and it\u2019s out of His <em>mercy<\/em> that He sends these warning shots across our bow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we <em>still<\/em> do <em>not<\/em> do anything about it, and allow it to grow, Number Five is when we embrace it; \u201cWe embrace sin.\u201d This is a <em>dangerous<\/em> phase; this is when sin becomes a stronghold. It\u2019s nearing full bloom. God usually begins discipline of His children at this stage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, Stage One: \u201cThought and temptation\u201d\u2014not necessarily sin yet. Thought and temptation\u2014if we don\u2019t reject it\u2014Stage Two: \u201cWe allow it to conceive,\u201d but it usually stays hidden. Stage Three: \u201cWe allow it to grow,\u201d\u2014it becomes a toehold. God starts to convict. Stage Four: \u201cWe nurture it.\u201d It becomes a foothold, and God\u2019s warnings start coming more heavily. Stage Five: \u201cWe embrace it\u201d; it becomes a stronghold. It\u2019s nearing full bloom; God begins to discipline us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStage Six: If we <em>still<\/em> stiffen our neck and say, \u201cNo, Lord; we want to continue doing this,\u201d\u2014Stage Six is \u201cDeath.\u201d Over and over in Scripture, I see this\u2014Old Testament\/New Testament. It could be any form of death\u2014not just <em>physical<\/em> death\u2014it could be <em>relational<\/em> death; it could be <em>financial<\/em> death; your reputation could be taken away\u2014but that\u2019s what follows when we do not deal with sin. In other words, deal with sin early; uproot it before it grows. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, we can choose to sin; but guys, we <em>cannot<\/em> choose the consequence or when it comes. I can choose whether to get involved with pornography. I can choose whether to go outside of my marriage. I can choose whether to cheat in my business or to lie; but I <em>cannot<\/em> choose the consequence or when it comes. That is up to the Lord; but I can tell you this: \u201cThe consequence is <em>never<\/em> what you would choose.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, when God says, \u201cCome back to Me,\u201d and we reject Him; \u201cCome back to Me,\u201d and we reject Him\u2014we allow it to grow: we nurture the weed; we nurture the sin. At some point\u2014because He is a <em>just<\/em> God and because you are His child\u2014you\u2019re <em>inviting<\/em> God\u2019s discipline on you; and He will bring in His backhoe. It is always more severe than we want it to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou do <em>not<\/em> follow your heart; you <em>lead<\/em> your heart to seek the Lord. Jeremiah 17:9 says: \u201cThe heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?\u201d Galatians 6:7: \u201cDo not be deceived. God cannot be mocked. A man will reap what he sows.\u201d Hebrews 12:1-11\u2014we get a picture of why God allows discipline and chastisement in our life\u2014it\u2019s because, if we belong to the Lord, He loves us. In \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHebrews 12, it says: \u201cMy son, do not make light of the Lord\u2019s discipline or lose heart when He rebukes you. For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastises everyone He receives as a son.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAre you God\u2019s child? If you are, God loves you; but at the same time, He wants you to grow. He wants you to run from sin; but because we all sin, we will encounter moments, where He chastises us to one degree or another. Woe to the man who says, \u201cI\u2019m allowing sin to grow, even after God convicts me\/even after God sends warning shots across the bow. I\u2019m still hiding it,\u201d\u2014or maybe\u2014\u201cI\u2019m just open with it; I\u2019m still doing it.\u201d My brother in Christ, if you allow it to blossom and come to full measure, you will <em>not<\/em> like the result. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEndure suffering as discipline: \u201cGod is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?\u201d Then listen to this: \u201cIf you do not experience discipline like everyone does, then you are illegitimate children and not true sons.\u201d If someone were to say to you, \u201cHey, I think this is okay, and I\u2019m not convicted,\u201d\u2014but you know Scripture clearly says that it\u2019s wrong; and they reject your admonitions; they reject what Scripture says\u2014\u201cGod\u2019s not convicting me,\u201d\u2014that is a sign: \u201cBy their fruit you shall know them,\u201d that they are <em>not<\/em> a true child of God, which is an even <em>scarier<\/em> thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis message is about what\u2019s growing in the garden of your heart. Proverbs 3: \u201cDo not be wise in your own eyes. Fear the Lord and turn away from evil. This will bring healing to your body, refreshment to your bones.\u201d The older I get, I need refreshment for my bones. [Laughter] Verse 11 in Proverbs 3: \u201cMy son, do not despise the Lord\u2019s discipline. Do not loathe His reproof. For the Lord disciplines those He loves as a father the son in whom He delights.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo not test the Lord. You do not have to look them all up now; but Deuteronomy 6:16, Matthew 4:7, Luke 4:12, 1 Corinthians 10:9\u2014all say the same thing: \u201cDo not put the Lord your God to the test.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, if you are God\u2019s child, He <em>loves<\/em> you; but He <em>will<\/em> discipline you. He is a <em>just<\/em> judge. He has to bring consequences for sin. Yes; He offers us mercy\/offers us grace; but there is a time, where He says: \u201c<em>No<\/em>; you\u2019ve come to full fruition. It\u2019s time to take drastic measure.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy brothers in Christ, there\u2019s not a woman on this boat that wouldn\u2019t want a husband, who was striving to keep the garden of his heart right before the Lord so that he can love God more and, in turn, love her more. What more could we do and, even, offer our wives than to say: \u201cGod, would You go through the garden of my heart? If there is some kudzu sin growing that\u2019s trying to take over my heart, Lord point it out. Help me uproot it early\/uproot it <em>now<\/em>. Lord, don\u2019t let me let this thing grow. I do <em>not<\/em> want to <em>invite<\/em> your discipline on me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou and I already experience enough of that, just growing in our faith; but to taunt God\/to test Him and say, \u201cNo; I can\u2019t get rid of this.\u201d You say: \u201cWell, I\u2019ve got something that\u2019s a toehold,\u201d \u201cI\u2019ve got something that is a foothold.\u201d Maybe, you\u2019ve got something that\u2019s a stronghold. That\u2019s got to be uprooted guys. We can <em>choose<\/em> to sin; we do <em>not<\/em> get to choose the consequence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we sit here today, I\u2019m going to ask you a question: \u201cFirst, what\u2019s growing in the garden of your heart?\u201d Secondly\u2014we\u2019re only guys in here; our wives aren\u2019t in here. I\u2019m not going to ask any details\u2014no details. If you have something today that\u2019s growing in your heart and you know, \u201cI need to uproot this,\u201d in a minute, I\u2019m going to ask you to raise your hand. I want the guys around you to pray for you. We\u2019re going to pray for one another, as brothers in Christ, that God would give us the strength, and the wisdom, and the desire to act <em>now<\/em> to uproot it in our hearts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, again, we\u2019ve been listening to Alex Kendrick from the<em> Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise\u2014a session he did with men on dealing with sin in our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m listening to that, again; and I\u2019m reminded of something I heard Dr. Crawford Loritts say, years ago. He said, \u201cMost of us want to manage the sin in our lives rather than wanting to mortify it.\u201d We don\u2019t want to pull the weeds up by the root; we just want to weed whack them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s what I was going to say. The weed whacker is not the tool to use. You need to get in there with a root digger and dig it out, because it will come back\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014quickly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I think I\u2019ve done this. Every man I know\u2014you play with temptation. I\u2019ve said this: \u201cIt will, eventually, lead to devastation. You can\u2019t play with it.\u201d That\u2019s what Alex was getting at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m thinking\u2014you know, I wasn\u2019t in that room\u2014but I <em>love<\/em> speaking to men, alone,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014because you can just do business. I\u2019m guessing, when he said, \u201cIf you are playing with some sin, raise your hand,\u201d\u2014I\u2019m thinking every hand in the room went up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> A lot of guys, who said, \u201cI need prayer for that,\u201d and a lot of guys who were praying for one another in that moment; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, I think it\u2019s important for listeners to understand there is a lot happening, spiritually, on board the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise. It\u2019s a great getaway\u2014relaxing\/a lot of fun for couples\u2014but it\u2019s a spiritually-enriching week. We expect that we\u2019re going to be sold out on this cruise by the end of June. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things that I <em>love<\/em> about being on the cruise is the opportunity to sit down, have meals with people from all over the country. We had a meal with somebody from Nebraska. They were <em>so glad<\/em>, in the middle of February, to be in the middle of the Caribbean instead of in frozen Nebraska. They were just talking about how the cruise was an unexpected delight for them\u2014not just because of the scenery, or the warmth, or the food, or any of that\u2014but because of how God was present and at work in the midst of the cruise. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid Robbins, who is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, is here with me. We hear that over and over again from people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Whether you\u2019ve been married a long time or whether you are a newlywed, we see people, consistently, tell us how much of a transformative experience it is. I got a note from someone who has been married 43 years; and he said, \u201cThis cruise has infused our marriage with the gospel to a new depth in many areas: our prayer, conflict skills, sexual intimacy, and the desire to live on mission for Christ with our marriage. We needed this time and teaching, and we are <em>so<\/em> grateful.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, we see people that have been married that long bringing their kids with them. One of those kids, who came along, said it to me this way: \u201cBeing newlyweds, we feel so much better equipped to deal with the years and trials ahead. It has helped us build such a better foundation. It was inspiring and gave us so much hope, hearing the success stories of people who have made it through so much through Christ.\u201d There is the teaching the component. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is, also, who you end up meeting\u2014and just these <em>amazing<\/em> people you meet. You should see my wife with weed whacker. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I\u2019m good at this. I like it, too. This was a <em>men\u2019s<\/em> session that he did; it was all about cleaning up the weeds in the garden. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong> At my house in Albany, Georgia, we have a large playground that my wife and I built for our kids, some nine years ago. Right next to the playground, I built a six-and-half foot tall wooden fence. On the other side of my fence was my neighbor\u2019s regular-sized, chain-link fence. Between those two fences is about four inches. I got along with my neighbor; but about a year\/year-and-a-half ago, I noticed that something was growing between the two fences. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs the months went by, I noticed this <em>weed<\/em> was starting to look like a small tree; right? This is a gnarly-looking bush, and it really <em>irritated<\/em> me. I would go out there\u2014trim it back; trim it back. This past summer, when we went to shoot <em>Overcomer<\/em> in Columbus, Georgia, my family basically <em>moved<\/em> up to Columbus from Albany. When we get back home, and I get to the backyard, my wife says: \u201cAlex! What in the world?!\u201d This <em>thing<\/em> has taken over the fence. When I go around the fence to look between the two fences, I see this thing is now a <em>trunk<\/em>. I was like: \u201cThat\u2019s it. I\u2019ve got to do <em>something<\/em> about this weed.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI get a yard guy to come over; right? This guy comes over. He starts working on it. He stays out there for <em>hours<\/em> and <em>hours<\/em> until he finally finishes. He comes to my door and knocks on the door. I come out to meet him. He says, \u201cIt\u2019s done.\u201d He says, \u201cThat\u2019s about the hardest thing I\u2019ve ever done as far as yardwork.\u201d It cost me more than I wanted to pay\u2014because I\u2019ve got to pay him well for this hard work; right? Why did it cost so much?\u2014why was it so hard to dig up?\u2014why was it so ugly?\u2014because I had allowed it to grow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn my personal Bible study, I kept coming across a phrase in the Old Testament\u2014it is also found in the New Testament\u2014talking about when sin comes to full bloom or full measure. Then, God comes in and does something drastic. I began to see this pattern, where God would say\u2014of something that began to spring up in regard to sin\u2014and God would say: \u201cHey, deal with this. Deal with this, My people, Israel\u201d\u2014or even other nations\/other cities, like the Amorites, or Nineveh, or Egypt, Edom, Moab. Occasionally, through the Old Testament, God says, \u201cHey, deal with this.\u201d He would give shots across the bow to say: \u201cThis needs to be uprooted. This needs to be dealt with.\u201d He would send prophet, after prophet, after prophet as He did with Israel and Judah. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost of the time, what would they do?\u2014they\u2019d let it keep growing; let it keep growing. Then I see this concept, that he says several times, where\u2014when it finally comes to blossom or full fruition\/full measure\u2014God brings in His backhoe; and He takes it out completely. It\u2019s, usually, <em>devastating<\/em> to the people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to remind you\u2014in the case of Israel, God led them out of Egypt. When they finally get to the Promised Land\u2014Joshua\u2019s bringing them into the Promised Land\u2014and God says\u2014what?\u2014He says: \u201cThis is now your land. Go in and annihilate everybody, and you take over.\u201d There were godless nations there with detestable sins. \u201cI\u2019m giving this land to you\u201d; so they go; and they start wiping one city out after another. He establishes them; and He says: \u201cI am your God, and you are My people. Do not engage with the godless nations around you and their immorality or their idol worship.\u201d He made it very clear, <em>numerous<\/em> times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, eventually, after obeying the Lord\/walking with Him for a while, what do the Israelite men do?\u2014start looking over the borders. They start checking out what their neighbors are doing: \u201cHey, guys, you\u2014come here! You see what these women are doing over here with their little idol worship and these dances. Hey, let\u2019s go check this out!\u201d At first, they are not <em>engaging<\/em>; but they are observing. Then, these nations start asking them to come participate. At first, they are like, \u201cNo; we don\u2019t do that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut little by little, the godless nations and their practices start creeping in on Israel and Judah until, eventually, they are <em>fully<\/em> engaged with same detestable sins. What does God do? He sees it springing up; and He sends prophet after prophet: \u201cCome back to Me. Uproot this. Come back to Me. I am your God. You are my people. I am the One that blesses you; I am the one that protects you; I am God; there is no other.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what do they do?\u2014they stiffen their neck; and they allow sin to grow, and grow, and grow. When it comes to full blossom, what does God do?\u2014He sends in His backhoe, and it is devastating. In Ezekiel 7:5-10, listen to what God says through the prophet Ezekiel: \u201cThis is what the sovereign Lord says: \u2018Disaster\u2014unheard of disaster! See, it comes. The end has come; it has roused itself against you. Doom has come upon you, upon you who dwell in this land. The time has come; the day is here. There will be panic, not joy in the land. I am about to pour out My wrath on you, and spend My anger against you. I will judge you according to your conduct and will repay you for all your detestable practices. I will not look on you with pity. I will not spare you.\u2019\u201d He\u2019s not just trimming back anymore. He\u2019s uprooting from the ground up: \u201cI will not spare you; I will repay you for your conduct\u2014for your detestable practices. Then you will know that I am the Lord. The day is here. Doom has burst forth.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, listen to this: \u201cThe rod has budded; arrogance has now blossomed.\u201d There it is again\u2014God says: \u201cI\u2019m seeing your sin. Your arrogance has now blossomed.\u201d Something sprouts; God says, \u201cTake care of it.\u201d If they don\u2019t take care of it, He starts sending warning shots\u2014He starts sending His prophets: \u201cDeal with it now. Deal with it early. Uproot it <em>now<\/em>.\u201d When they didn\u2019t, and it came to full blossom\/full fruition, God comes in; because He is a <em>just<\/em> God, and He deals with it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s interesting that He says this about the Amorites. Before Joshua took the people of Canaan\u2014the Amorites\u2014God was giving <em>them<\/em> time to come back to Him. He, actually, says this in Genesis 15:16: \u201cI\u2019m not dealing with them yet for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full fruition.\u201d Another verse says, \u201cfull measure.\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat?!\u201d In His mercy, He was still giving them time: \u201cRepent.\u201d He says, \u201cThe sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure\u201d; but when it did, He told the Israelites, \u201cWipe them all out.\u201d Again, when God brings in His backhoe, nothing is left. Blossoming sin leads to death. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI noticed this in Scripture\u2014this pattern over and over\u2014and I\u2019m going to give you the six stages of sin. The first stage is: \u201cThought and temptation.\u201d Now, this is not sin, <em>yet<\/em>. It\u2019s just the thought that comes into your mind or the temptation presents itself. Jesus was tempted but did not sin. The first stage is thought and temptation; but if we don\u2019t <em>reject<\/em> it, it leads to the second stage, where you allow it to \u201cConceive.\u201d Now, at this stage, usually, sin stays hidden. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStage Three: \u201cYou allow it to grow.\u201d Now, this is where I would use the term, a toehold. It\u2019s when the door is cracked, and sin just gets a little bit of a toehold in there. At this stage, which is Stage Three, God usually starts to send conviction: \u201cHey, stop this. Come back to Me.\u201d In other words, the weed is starting to grow. God sees it; you know it; He starts to send conviction\u2014if you are a child of God, by the way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStage Four: If you still do not do anything about it, Stage Four is when you begin to \u201cNurture it.\u201d This is when it goes from a toehold to a foothold. The door opens a little bit more, and that toe slides right in there. It\u2019s starting to try to squeeze in the door. Sin is looking to take over. God\u2019s warnings become more prominent, and it\u2019s out of His <em>mercy<\/em> that He sends these warning shots across our bow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we <em>still<\/em> do <em>not<\/em> do anything about it, and allow it to grow, Number Five is when we embrace it; \u201cWe embrace sin.\u201d This is a <em>dangerous<\/em> phase; this is when sin becomes a stronghold. It\u2019s nearing full bloom. God usually begins discipline of His children at this stage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, Stage One: \u201cThought and temptation\u201d\u2014not necessarily sin yet. Thought and temptation\u2014if we don\u2019t reject it\u2014Stage Two: \u201cWe allow it to conceive,\u201d but it usually stays hidden. Stage Three: \u201cWe allow it to grow,\u201d\u2014it becomes a toehold. God starts to convict. Stage Four: \u201cWe nurture it.\u201d It becomes a foothold, and God\u2019s warnings start coming more heavily. Stage Five: \u201cWe embrace it\u201d; it becomes a stronghold. It\u2019s nearing full bloom; God begins to discipline us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStage Six: If we <em>still<\/em> stiffen our neck and say, \u201cNo, Lord; we want to continue doing this,\u201d\u2014Stage Six is \u201cDeath.\u201d Over and over in Scripture, I see this\u2014Old Testament\/New Testament. It could be any form of death\u2014not just <em>physical<\/em> death\u2014it could be <em>relational<\/em> death; it could be <em>financial<\/em> death; your reputation could be taken away\u2014but that\u2019s what follows when we do not deal with sin. In other words, deal with sin early; uproot it before it grows. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, we can choose to sin; but guys, we <em>cannot<\/em> choose the consequence or when it comes. I can choose whether to get involved with pornography. I can choose whether to go outside of my marriage. I can choose whether to cheat in my business or to lie; but I <em>cannot<\/em> choose the consequence or when it comes. That is up to the Lord; but I can tell you this: \u201cThe consequence is <em>never<\/em> what you would choose.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, when God says, \u201cCome back to Me,\u201d and we reject Him; \u201cCome back to Me,\u201d and we reject Him\u2014we allow it to grow: we nurture the weed; we nurture the sin. At some point\u2014because He is a <em>just<\/em> God and because you are His child\u2014you\u2019re <em>inviting<\/em> God\u2019s discipline on you; and He will bring in His backhoe. It is always more severe than we want it to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou do <em>not<\/em> follow your heart; you <em>lead<\/em> your heart to seek the Lord. Jeremiah 17:9 says: \u201cThe heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?\u201d Galatians 6:7: \u201cDo not be deceived. God cannot be mocked. A man will reap what he sows.\u201d Hebrews 12:1-11\u2014we get a picture of why God allows discipline and chastisement in our life\u2014it\u2019s because, if we belong to the Lord, He loves us. In \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHebrews 12, it says: \u201cMy son, do not make light of the Lord\u2019s discipline or lose heart when He rebukes you. For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastises everyone He receives as a son.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAre you God\u2019s child? If you are, God loves you; but at the same time, He wants you to grow. He wants you to run from sin; but because we all sin, we will encounter moments, where He chastises us to one degree or another. Woe to the man who says, \u201cI\u2019m allowing sin to grow, even after God convicts me\/even after God sends warning shots across the bow. I\u2019m still hiding it,\u201d\u2014or maybe\u2014\u201cI\u2019m just open with it; I\u2019m still doing it.\u201d My brother in Christ, if you allow it to blossom and come to full measure, you will <em>not<\/em> like the result. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEndure suffering as discipline: \u201cGod is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?\u201d Then listen to this: \u201cIf you do not experience discipline like everyone does, then you are illegitimate children and not true sons.\u201d If someone were to say to you, \u201cHey, I think this is okay, and I\u2019m not convicted,\u201d\u2014but you know Scripture clearly says that it\u2019s wrong; and they reject your admonitions; they reject what Scripture says\u2014\u201cGod\u2019s not convicting me,\u201d\u2014that is a sign: \u201cBy their fruit you shall know them,\u201d that they are <em>not<\/em> a true child of God, which is an even <em>scarier<\/em> thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis message is about what\u2019s growing in the garden of your heart. Proverbs 3: \u201cDo not be wise in your own eyes. Fear the Lord and turn away from evil. This will bring healing to your body, refreshment to your bones.\u201d The older I get, I need refreshment for my bones. [Laughter] Verse 11 in Proverbs 3: \u201cMy son, do not despise the Lord\u2019s discipline. Do not loathe His reproof. For the Lord disciplines those He loves as a father the son in whom He delights.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo not test the Lord. You do not have to look them all up now; but Deuteronomy 6:16, Matthew 4:7, Luke 4:12, 1 Corinthians 10:9\u2014all say the same thing: \u201cDo not put the Lord your God to the test.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, if you are God\u2019s child, He <em>loves<\/em> you; but He <em>will<\/em> discipline you. He is a <em>just<\/em> judge. He has to bring consequences for sin. Yes; He offers us mercy\/offers us grace; but there is a time, where He says: \u201c<em>No<\/em>; you\u2019ve come to full fruition. It\u2019s time to take drastic measure.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy brothers in Christ, there\u2019s not a woman on this boat that wouldn\u2019t want a husband, who was striving to keep the garden of his heart right before the Lord so that he can love God more and, in turn, love her more. What more could we do and, even, offer our wives than to say: \u201cGod, would You go through the garden of my heart? If there is some kudzu sin growing that\u2019s trying to take over my heart, Lord point it out. Help me uproot it early\/uproot it <em>now<\/em>. Lord, don\u2019t let me let this thing grow. I do <em>not<\/em> want to <em>invite<\/em> your discipline on me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou and I already experience enough of that, just growing in our faith; but to taunt God\/to test Him and say, \u201cNo; I can\u2019t get rid of this.\u201d You say: \u201cWell, I\u2019ve got something that\u2019s a toehold,\u201d \u201cI\u2019ve got something that is a foothold.\u201d Maybe, you\u2019ve got something that\u2019s a stronghold. That\u2019s got to be uprooted guys. We can <em>choose<\/em> to sin; we do <em>not<\/em> get to choose the consequence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we sit here today, I\u2019m going to ask you a question: \u201cFirst, what\u2019s growing in the garden of your heart?\u201d Secondly\u2014we\u2019re only guys in here; our wives aren\u2019t in here. I\u2019m not going to ask any details\u2014no details. If you have something today that\u2019s growing in your heart and you know, \u201cI need to uproot this,\u201d in a minute, I\u2019m going to ask you to raise your hand. I want the guys around you to pray for you. We\u2019re going to pray for one another, as brothers in Christ, that God would give us the strength, and the wisdom, and the desire to act <em>now<\/em> to uproot it in our hearts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, again, we\u2019ve been listening to Alex Kendrick from the<em> Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise\u2014a session he did with men on dealing with sin in our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m listening to that, again; and I\u2019m reminded of something I heard Dr. Crawford Loritts say, years ago. He said, \u201cMost of us want to manage the sin in our lives rather than wanting to mortify it.\u201d We don\u2019t want to pull the weeds up by the root; we just want to weed whack them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s what I was going to say. The weed whacker is not the tool to use. You need to get in there with a root digger and dig it out, because it will come back\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> \u2014quickly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I think I\u2019ve done this. Every man I know\u2014you play with temptation. I\u2019ve said this: \u201cIt will, eventually, lead to devastation. You can\u2019t play with it.\u201d That\u2019s what Alex was getting at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m thinking\u2014you know, I wasn\u2019t in that room\u2014but I <em>love<\/em> speaking to men, alone,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2014because you can just do business. I\u2019m guessing, when he said, \u201cIf you are playing with some sin, raise your hand,\u201d\u2014I\u2019m thinking every hand in the room went up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> A lot of guys, who said, \u201cI need prayer for that,\u201d and a lot of guys who were praying for one another in that moment; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, I think it\u2019s important for listeners to understand there is a lot happening, spiritually, on board the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise. It\u2019s a great getaway\u2014relaxing\/a lot of fun for couples\u2014but it\u2019s a spiritually-enriching week. We expect that we\u2019re going to be sold out on this cruise by the end of June. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things that I <em>love<\/em> about being on the cruise is the opportunity to sit down, have meals with people from all over the country. We had a meal with somebody from Nebraska. They were <em>so glad<\/em>, in the middle of February, to be in the middle of the Caribbean instead of in frozen Nebraska. They were just talking about how the cruise was an unexpected delight for them\u2014not just because of the scenery, or the warmth, or the food, or any of that\u2014but because of how God was present and at work in the midst of the cruise. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid Robbins, who is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, is here with me. We hear that over and over again from people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Whether you\u2019ve been married a long time or whether you are a newlywed, we see people, consistently, tell us how much of a transformative experience it is. I got a note from someone who has been married 43 years; and he said, \u201cThis cruise has infused our marriage with the gospel to a new depth in many areas: our prayer, conflict skills, sexual intimacy, and the desire to live on mission for Christ with our marriage. We needed this time and teaching, and we are <em>so<\/em> grateful.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, we see people that have been married that long bringing their kids with them. One of those kids, who came along, said it to me this way: \u201cBeing newlyweds, we feel so much better equipped to deal with the years and trials ahead. It has helped us build such a better foundation. It was inspiring and gave us so much hope, hearing the success stories of people who have made it through so much through Christ.\u201d There is the teaching the component. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is, also, who you end up meeting\u2014and just these <em>amazing<\/em> people you meet. We have those stories of people, who come back, and now plan to get their room near someone else\u2014and request that\u2014because they love doing it together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, we need to make sure listeners understand it looks like it is going to sell out, here, in the next week or two.
