The success of any marriage has something to do\u2014at least, in part\u2014with how husbands and wives carry out our assignments\/our responsibilities to love and serve each other. We\u2019ll talk more about how we do that today with Chip Ingram. Stay with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. I\u2019ve been reflecting, as we\u2019ve been talking this week about a <em>Marriage That Works<\/em>; and I\u2019ve been thinking about a scene in our movie, <em>Like Arrows<\/em>, where the husband and the wife recognize: \u201cWe\u2019ve been kind of going through the spiritual motions, but that hasn\u2019t really been a spiritual reality in our lives and in our marriage. We go to church, and we say grace. I pray bedtime prayers, and that\u2019s kind of all there is to it. It\u2019s not working, and our kids are spinning out as a result of this.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey come to a point, where they recognize, \u201cWe\u2019ve got to do something differently.\u201d The husband tries to exercise a little spiritual leadership, and the wife is cheering him on\u2014she says: \u201cOur job is to be faithful. It\u2019s God\u2019s job to do the work.\u201d I don\u2019t know how many people I\u2019ve talked to, who have seen the movie, who reflect on that scene and what that brings up to them. When it comes to marriage, that\u2019s a big part of what we\u2019ve been talking about this week\u2014our job is to be faithful, not to be perfect, but to be faithful. It\u2019s God\u2019s job to take our faithfulness and to bless it; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; that example is a good one, because it\u2019s not words; it\u2019s not good intentions; it\u2019s actually living it out. I thought of this when you said this, Bob\u2014I don\u2019t know what year it was. I was the Detroit Lions Chaplain; you know? There were different coaches coming in and had me do different things. One season, for about five years, this coach wanted me to pray <em>before<\/em> we went onto the field, so the pregame\u2014last thing we did before we ran out of that locker room. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember some player\/somebody says, \u201cI don\u2019t think it should be the chaplain.\u201d I\u2019ve been doing it for games and games; and of course, we\u2019re not winning. So, maybe, they\u2019re thinking my prayers aren\u2019t very good; [Laughter] but this guy went to the coach and said, \u201cI think a player should pray.\u201d He goes, \u201cOkay.\u201d So, we had a guy pray, and he starts cursing in the middle of the prayer\u2014it was absolutely unbelievable. The next thing I knew, the coach was like, \u201cFrom now on, you\u2019re praying,\u201d\u2014[Laughter]\u2014it was like, \u201cOkay; it\u2019s one thing to pray a prayer; but this guy actually knows how to pray and lives it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it\u2019s the same thing in a marriage. You can say that you want\/you can pray whatever you want; but when you get a marriage that works, it\u2019s got to be lived out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> By the way, I think <em>Like Arrows<\/em> is on Netflix now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I was just going to ask, \u201cHave you told listeners?!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We haven\u2019t mentioned this before, and I haven\u2019t verified; but it was supposed to, this month, come on Netflix. Chip, welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Thank you so much, Bob. Good to be with you all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Chip is a Bible teacher. Recently, after\u2014how many years were you at the church in Northern California? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Ten years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you just recently stepped away from that\u2014handed it off. You\u2019re still going\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014you\u2019re still a part of the church, but you\u2019ve handed off the leadership responsibilities and still giving leadership to <em>Living on the Edge<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup>. You were telling us that, in Asia, the work of <em>Living on the Edge<\/em> is exploding. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Yes; I\u2019ve been to China, I think, three times in the last twelve months. God has opened some doors, even in the midst of kind of all these kind of crackdowns we see. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Why do you think?\u2014why is it taking off? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> You know, I can give you a spiritual answer of the sovereignty of God\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> \u2014and the kindness of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think there was a man, who invested in the registered church for 25 years and built a relationship. I happened to write a book on the attributes of God. I think God so wants His name and the clarity of who He is\u2014and honestly, you know, when I write something\u2014and this is like <em>A.W. Tozer and J.I. Packer for Dummies<\/em>\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I mean, they wouldn\u2019t let me call it that; but we had an opportunity to translate that. God has really used that and kept the door open and been able to provide that to hundreds of thousands of leaders. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019re talking about marriage this week. You\u2019ve just written a book called <em>Marriage That Works: God\u2019s Way of Becoming Spiritual Soul Mates, Best Friends, and Passionate Lovers<\/em>. I think\u2014I hear a lot of people, saying: \u201cThat\u2019s what I want. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cSo, I\u2019m ready to hear how it works.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were talking about what we model in marriage and the impact it has on our children. A lot of our listeners may not know one of your kids by name; but they know one of your sons, because they\u2019ve sung his songs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Sure. Yes; my son, Jason, is a very accomplished songwriter. I don\u2019t know how many Dove Awards, but he just won two Grammys\u2014Lauren Daigle\u2019s song\u2014and is a very humble, godly young man and a good dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe went through a bit of a challenge like you have. Looking back\u2014when we were in it, he was a rebellious son; and it was 98 percent him. Looking back now, he had a wacko dad, whose expectations and intensity\u2014like I pushed all of his buttons. I think we both learned we had a lot to learn; but he did go through a season, where he really doubted God: \u201cI don\u2019t know if I believe.\u201d During that time, it was really, really difficult; and I think he would be fair to say, \u201cDad, I really rebelled; and I pushed all your buttons.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt got to where it was unsustainable\u2014and one of those really, really hard talks, where, \u201cSon, I\u2019ve taught you all I can, and you can do whatever you want and live anywhere you want; but that\u2019s going to mean, probably, relocating.\u201d We saw God do an amazing thing in his life\u2014and just a 180\u2014and God grabbed his heart. Later, I kept waiting to make sure everything was real, and I just wanted to know. You know, in my heart of hearts, I was hoping: \u201cI wonder if it was one of my better sermons. [Laughter] Maybe, I had a <em>really<\/em> good weekend.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we both matured through things, I asked him, \u201cJason, what\u2014you know, what happened?\u2014something happened inside of you.\u201d He said: \u201cWell, I remember we were sitting in the car, and you were having that hard talk. As you were having that hard talk, tears were streaming down your face; and you know, I\u2019ve grown up catching Mom on her knees, and all I know is this Jesus stuff. I didn\u2019t know if I could believe it, or I was just supposed to believe it, or was it just because you all believe? There is something about being a pastor\u2019s kid\u2014I was tired of the pressure I felt.\u201d <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cBut it\u2019s so real to you and Mom, and I saw how it impacted your life. It was just such a strong testament. I said, \u2018If You\u2019re that real to them, show me that in my life.\u2019\u201d He said, \u201cGod did.\u201d As a result, he followed his dream; and he is one of the hardest workers I\u2019ve ever, ever met. The Lord has really used his life, and what I love is he writes songs with real content. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m just watching you recount that season with Jason, and it still stirs up\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Oh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014a lot of emotion. How long were you and Theresa in that season, where you were thinking, \u201cWe don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen here\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> About four years\u2014about four years, and it was\u2014I don\u2019t know how every couple lives, but the ones I get to know\u2014you have issues and seasons. After the day is done, you sit up in bed, and you put the pillows behind you. You look at each other and, you know: \u201cHoney, am I being too strong?\u201d \u201cAm I messing up here?\u201d \u201cHave I done this there?\u201d \u201cHow did I blow it?\u201d \u201cWhat is God up to?\u201d \u201cDo you think this is going to lead to this?\u201d\u2014all of these fears, and you just pray like crazy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI tried to say: \u201cOkay; nothing you do can ever stop me from loving you,\u201d and \u201cYou can\u2019t have your own selfish way.\u201d We talked about marriage and choosing\u2014I would go out to breakfast with him. He\u2019d roll his eyes, like, \u201cDad, I don\u2019t really want to spend any time with you.\u201d Honestly, I didn\u2019t want to spend any time with him either!\u2014but it was a choice. What I knew was\u2014my behavior needed to be: \u201cI\u2019ve got to invest in my son\u2019s life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn the personality range of things, we would not be a marriage made in heaven. He\u2019s an artist; I didn\u2019t understand. He\u2019s an introvert; I\u2019m like, over the top, intense extrovert. Sports, sports, sports\u2014and he\u2019s music, music; art, art. I mean, if we would have both had great attitudes, it would have been hard; so God has been very, very kind. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Tell me\u2014did he write this? \u201cYou say I am loved when I can\u2019t feel a thing. You say I\u2019m strong when I think I\u2019m weak. You say I\u2019m held when I\u2019m falling short. When I don\u2019t belong, oh, you say I am Yours, and I believe this.\u201d I mean, obviously, Lauren Daigle sang the lyrics, but he wrote it. I\u2019m not kidding\u2014when I heard that, as well as it was sung by her, the depth of the meaning of that identity in Christ is <em>so<\/em> powerful. It\u2019s beautiful to know that\u2019s something that was born out of your relationship with him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Yes; very, very, very special. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> We were\u2014you know, looking back\u2014thrilled to be his parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve been talking this week about what it is that makes a marriage work, and this book that you\u2019ve written is anchored in Ephesians, Chapter 5, the classic chapter in the Bible on marriage, where couples have learned\u2014if they\u2019ve read this chapter\u2014they\u2019ve learned about God\u2019s assignment for husbands to love wives\/for wives to respect their husbands. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are directions here for how we are to respond to one another differently in a marriage relationship. There are different things that God\u2019s assigned for husbands than what He\u2019s assigned for wives. They are to come together and to fit together in a complementary way. So, if you were to boil down a husband\u2019s job description in a nutshell, can you do that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> I\u2019ll give it my best shot. What I did in this book\u2014because I didn\u2019t get this, and I didn\u2019t see it\u2014I mean, this is more of a coaching book. This is: \u201cOkay, guys, we are supposed to be the head of our family. We\u2019re supposed to lead. We\u2019re supposed to love sacrificially, intentionally, and sensitively; okay? That\u2019s the job description.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay; what\u2019s that look like with your wife? What\u2019s it look like in the finances? What does it mean to be the spiritual leader? What does it mean with your kids? I, literally, went through and wrote chapters and, real practically, gave guys, \u201cHere are some steps to go from Point A to Point B,\u201d because I didn\u2019t see that; and no one taught me that. God brought some great mentors in my life and, then, kind of teamed up with my wife to do the same thing for women. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I think what we need to understand is\u2014we need to own the responsibility of, if I\u2019m going to love intentionally, it says to care and nurture her. I finally got the picture\u2014because my wife had such a damaged self-image and didn\u2019t like herself\u2014but she was this beautiful, beautiful flower that God had given me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe word, nurture, there and care for means to keep her warm and that my job was to help her become all that God had designed her and made her to be; so that was helping her discover her gifts. That means living with her in an understanding way and realizing, like in her particular case\u2014I don\u2019t think she would mind me sharing this\u2014you know, when you had her kind of father and, then, you\u2019re abandoned by someone, I mean, she is <em>so<\/em> sensitive to rejection. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, after <em>40 years<\/em>\u2014I mean, just so we don\u2019t make this like, \u201cOh, we had marriage counseling 40 years ago, and things are great,\u201d\u2014this was ten days ago. We were trying to get some dates or something. I want to get them done really, really, really fast; and she was asking a bunch of questions. I just raised my voice a little bit [intensely]: \u201cWell, honey, what we need to do is\u2026.\u201d\u2014I said it about like that. I looked at her face, and she just shut down; she didn\u2019t say anything. Then, you know, we did something else; and then, in my mind, like men do, I thought, you know: \u201cGet over it. How many years are we going to go?\u201d\u2014you know? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what I knew\/what I\u2019ve learned is\u2014she heard me yell at her\u2014in her mind, I was <em>yelling<\/em> at her. I\u2019m thinking, \u201cI mean, I just like\u201d\u2014just like I just did\u2014\u201cI raised my\u2014\u2018Come on. We need to\u2026.\u2019\u201d\u2014it was that intensity. I looked over at her; I said, \u201cHoney, did I hurt your feelings?\u201d \u201cYes.\u201d \u201cDid it sound like I really yelled at you?\u201d She goes, \u201cYes.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I think we all need to understand\u2014as a man, all our wives are different; but that\u2019s the assignment. I mean, how does Jesus love the church? I think the thing\u2014if I could flip it around\u2014and maybe, you could speak to this far better than me\u2014I don\u2019t think most women realize how sensitive men are to failing, and how much they need to be affirmed, and how much we need\u2014I talk about a man stepping up; and to me, a woman has to step in\u2014not step over\u2014step in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnything I\u2019ve ever accomplished\u2014I\u2019m absolutely convinced I\u2019m going to get to heaven, and the Lord and Theresa are going to say, \u201cShe prayed like crazy, and she stepped in; and Chip ran the errands.\u201d I mean, I\u2019m one high-energy, Energizer Bunny\u2014blah-blah-blah-blah-blah, go-go-go-go-go\u2014but in my loneliest, most dark times, living with her has been the biggest strength of my whole life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> That\u2019s beautiful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that what happens for us, as women\u2014I\u2019m going to speak for myself\u2014is I didn\u2019t grow up in the church. Submission\u2014I remember going to the first <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> conference. When this topic came up on submission, I was sitting in the back of the room, as an attendee; and I had my arms crossed. I thought: \u201cOh, boy, here we come. I\u2019m going to hear about submission and how I need to be a doormat, and I need to let this strong man rule me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a very strong father; and he was not loving, all the time, to my mom. I wanted to protect my mom, and I also wanted to protect me; so I became very strong, thinking, \u201cYou\u2019re not going to hurt <em>me<\/em>.\u201d I think that is what has happened to women. We\u2019re not sure what that looks like\u2014to respond to a man\u2019s love. I know that I became very controlling, and I think that\u2019s what we do out of our fear. I\u2019ve stepped into that, and I think\u2014wouldn\u2019t you say, \u201cI was pretty controlling, Dave?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> OHHH, yes. [Laughter] Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And strong\u2014I\u2019m a strong woman, too, because I thought, if I was passive and I was weak, he would run over me as I felt like my dad did to my mom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we all bring a lot of baggage into that area. As you describe your treatment for Theresa and what that looks like\u2014your love and your care\u2014what woman doesn\u2019t want to do that?\u2014what woman doesn\u2019t want to receive that kind of care and love?\u2014that feels good. But I think we\u2019ve guarded our hearts; because we\u2019re so fearful that we won\u2019t receive that\u2014that we guard our hearts, and we become hard, and we become controlling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> And I think we\u2019ve got to be honest. So many Christian men have not treated their wives well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> As a result, that\u2019s how they respond. I think a lot of bad teaching has been on submission that, actually, might be mild abuse; but it\u2019s <em>not<\/em> good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJuli Slattery\u2014she, actually, did a little Appendix in the back of the book on \u201cHow do you submit in a difficult situation?\u201d She talks about, you know, women are powerful. I mean, when you really think about who really runs a home, women are powerful. She says: \u201cSubmission is our power; but it\u2019s our power, surrendered in meekness, to equip our husbands to become the kind of men that we need and to be the kind of fathers. You bring you\u2019re A-game, and you\u2019re strong. You bring out in your husband and in your family what they need the most.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll tell you what\u2014my wife is one of the most non-passive women in the entire world\u2014[Laughter]\u2014and very submissive. We discuss and do everything together; but we\u2019ve had those 1 percent of the times, where we disagreed. I mean, find a company that has two CEO\u2019s or two head coaches. I mean, at the end of the day\u2014I tell men: \u201cThis isn\u2019t about an authority issue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> \u201cThis is about responsibility.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. You said guys need to learn how to step up\/wives need to learn how to step in; and I think it goes to what we\u2019re talking about here. The natural tendency for men is not to step up but to be passive\u2014to pull back\/to just coast\u2014and: \u201cIf somebody else wants to take charge, yes; that\u2019s fine with me. Go ahead because I\u2019ll just sit here on the sofa and use the remote.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I found that\u2019s what I did. I was passive; and the only time I took charge, early in our marriage, was with anger and with harshness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Chip, when you were saying that, I\u2019ve seen that look from Ann. I didn\u2019t think I was harsh, but I was. It actually got caught once on video tape. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I finally realized and understood, \u201cThis is what God calls me to\u2014as a man, as a husband, and as a father,\u201d\u2014to reject that passivity\/to overcome that and not respond in anger but in gentleness, and love, and cherish her like you said\u2014the flower: protect and bring out the best\u2014there was a difference in the way she stopped trying to control me, not immediately, but over time. It\u2019s like she started to respect and submit in a beautiful, mutual way that made me a better man. I\u2019m with you, Chip\u2014I did not become a better man\u2014she made me that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> She really did; it\u2019s crazy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Well, we do have so much power, as women\u2014not that we have to exert\u2014we have the power to <em>influence<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> You\u2019re not kidding. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Man, I\u2019ve realized, even raising three sons\u2014as I speak life into them\/as I see the greatness God put in them, there is no greater power than that. It breathes life into a home\/into a relationship. I think Dave and I have both seen that, as he loves, sacrificially, and I\u2019m speaking life and supporting\u2014and we\u2019re, side by side, in this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Yes; absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It\u2019s this beautiful picture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s the stepping <em>in<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She\u2019s an encourager\u2014she is bringing life and energy to the marriage team\/to the family team. It\u2019s <em>huge<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Powerful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> I want to be fair to guys; because what I think happens is\u2014they hear something like this, or their wives hear this\u2014and they say: \u201cOh, you\u2019ve got to listen to this\u2014go, online, FamilyLife. It was so helpful today.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s like: \u201cI don\u2019t know how to do this. How do you actually step up, and what does that look like?\u201d When it comes to relationships and spirituality, and leading in those areas, the reason we work so much and like sports is we are competent there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> But spiritually, you ask a guy how to pray with his wife; and you\u2019re thinking: \u201cIt\u2019s like playing basketball with Michael Jordan. She\u2019s up there, and I\u2019m down here.\u201d So, I think you\u2019ve got to give guys tools and some baby steps. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou were a college quarterback and a coach\u2014it\u2019s like saying, \u201cGo score.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> \u201cGive me a play, man! Give me a couple of plays.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cLet me run the drill a few times.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> That\u2019s what we\u2019ve tried to do in the book\u2014is give men and women some plays. I\u2019ve been reflecting, as we\u2019ve been talking this week about a <em>Marriage That Works<\/em>; and I\u2019ve been thinking about a scene in our movie, <em>Like Arrows<\/em>, where the husband and the wife recognize: \u201cWe\u2019ve been kind of going through the spiritual motions, but that hasn\u2019t really been a spiritual reality in our lives and in our marriage. We go to church, and we say grace. I pray bedtime prayers, and that\u2019s kind of all there is to it. It\u2019s not working, and our kids are spinning out as a result of this.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey come to a point, where they recognize, \u201cWe\u2019ve got to do something differently.\u201d The husband tries to exercise a little spiritual leadership, and the wife is cheering him on\u2014she says: \u201cOur job is to be faithful. It\u2019s God\u2019s job to do the work.\u201d I don\u2019t know how many people I\u2019ve talked to, who have seen the movie, who reflect on that scene and what that brings up to them. When it comes to marriage, that\u2019s a big part of what we\u2019ve been talking about this week\u2014our job is to be faithful, not to be perfect, but to be faithful. It\u2019s God\u2019s job to take our faithfulness and to bless it; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; that example is a good one, because it\u2019s not words; it\u2019s not good intentions; it\u2019s actually living it out. I thought of this when you said this, Bob\u2014I don\u2019t know what year it was. I was the Detroit Lions Chaplain; you know? There were different coaches coming in and had me do different things. One season, for about five years, this coach wanted me to pray <em>before<\/em> we went onto the field, so the pregame\u2014last thing we did before we ran out of that locker room. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember some player\/somebody says, \u201cI don\u2019t think it should be the chaplain.\u201d I\u2019ve been doing it for games and games; and of course, we\u2019re not winning. So, maybe, they\u2019re thinking my prayers aren\u2019t very good; [Laughter] but this guy went to the coach and said, \u201cI think a player should pray.\u201d He goes, \u201cOkay.\u201d So, we had a guy pray, and he starts cursing in the middle of the prayer\u2014it was absolutely unbelievable. The next thing I knew, the coach was like, \u201cFrom now on, you\u2019re praying,\u201d\u2014[Laughter]\u2014it was like, \u201cOkay; it\u2019s one thing to pray a prayer; but this guy actually knows how to pray and lives it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it\u2019s the same thing in a marriage. You can say that you want\/you can pray whatever you want; but when you get a marriage that works, it\u2019s got to be lived out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> By the way, I think <em>Like Arrows<\/em> is on Netflix now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I was just going to ask, \u201cHave you told listeners?!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We haven\u2019t mentioned this before, and I haven\u2019t verified; but it was supposed to, this month, come on Netflix. Chip, welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Thank you so much, Bob. Good to be with you all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Chip is a Bible teacher. Recently, after\u2014how many years were you at the church in Northern California? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Ten years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you just recently stepped away from that\u2014handed it off. You\u2019re still going\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014you\u2019re still a part of the church, but you\u2019ve handed off the leadership responsibilities and still giving leadership to <em>Living on the Edge<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup>. You were telling us that, in Asia, the work of <em>Living on the Edge<\/em> is exploding. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Yes; I\u2019ve been to China, I think, three times in the last twelve months. God has opened some doors, even in the midst of kind of all these kind of crackdowns we see. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Why do you think?\u2014why is it taking off? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> You know, I can give you a spiritual answer of the sovereignty of God\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> \u2014and the kindness of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think there was a man, who invested in the registered church for 25 years and built a relationship. I happened to write a book on the attributes of God. I think God so wants His name and the clarity of who He is\u2014and honestly, you know, when I write something\u2014and this is like <em>A.W. Tozer and J.I. Packer for Dummies<\/em>\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I mean, they wouldn\u2019t let me call it that; but we had an opportunity to translate that. God has really used that and kept the door open and been able to provide that to hundreds of thousands of leaders. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019re talking about marriage this week. You\u2019ve just written a book called <em>Marriage That Works: God\u2019s Way of Becoming Spiritual Soul Mates, Best Friends, and Passionate Lovers<\/em>. I think\u2014I hear a lot of people, saying: \u201cThat\u2019s what I want. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cSo, I\u2019m ready to hear how it works.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were talking about what we model in marriage and the impact it has on our children. A lot of our listeners may not know one of your kids by name; but they know one of your sons, because they\u2019ve sung his songs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Sure. Yes; my son, Jason, is a very accomplished songwriter. I don\u2019t know how many Dove Awards, but he just won two Grammys\u2014Lauren Daigle\u2019s song\u2014and is a very humble, godly young man and a good dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe went through a bit of a challenge like you have. Looking back\u2014when we were in it, he was a rebellious son; and it was 98 percent him. Looking back now, he had a wacko dad, whose expectations and intensity\u2014like I pushed all of his buttons. I think we both learned we had a lot to learn; but he did go through a season, where he really doubted God: \u201cI don\u2019t know if I believe.\u201d During that time, it was really, really difficult; and I think he would be fair to say, \u201cDad, I really rebelled; and I pushed all your buttons.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt got to where it was unsustainable\u2014and one of those really, really hard talks, where, \u201cSon, I\u2019ve taught you all I can, and you can do whatever you want and live anywhere you want; but that\u2019s going to mean, probably, relocating.\u201d We saw God do an amazing thing in his life\u2014and just a 180\u2014and God grabbed his heart. Later, I kept waiting to make sure everything was real, and I just wanted to know. You know, in my heart of hearts, I was hoping: \u201cI wonder if it was one of my better sermons. [Laughter] Maybe, I had a <em>really<\/em> good weekend.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we both matured through things, I asked him, \u201cJason, what\u2014you know, what happened?\u2014something happened inside of you.\u201d He said: \u201cWell, I remember we were sitting in the car, and you were having that hard talk. As you were having that hard talk, tears were streaming down your face; and you know, I\u2019ve grown up catching Mom on her knees, and all I know is this Jesus stuff. I didn\u2019t know if I could believe it, or I was just supposed to believe it, or was it just because you all believe? There is something about being a pastor\u2019s kid\u2014I was tired of the pressure I felt.\u201d <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cBut it\u2019s so real to you and Mom, and I saw how it impacted your life. It was just such a strong testament. I said, \u2018If You\u2019re that real to them, show me that in my life.\u2019\u201d He said, \u201cGod did.\u201d As a result, he followed his dream; and he is one of the hardest workers I\u2019ve ever, ever met. The Lord has really used his life, and what I love is he writes songs with real content. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m just watching you recount that season with Jason, and it still stirs up\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Oh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014a lot of emotion. How long were you and Theresa in that season, where you were thinking, \u201cWe don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen here\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> About four years\u2014about four years, and it was\u2014I don\u2019t know how every couple lives, but the ones I get to know\u2014you have issues and seasons. After the day is done, you sit up in bed, and you put the pillows behind you. You look at each other and, you know: \u201cHoney, am I being too strong?\u201d \u201cAm I messing up here?\u201d \u201cHave I done this there?\u201d \u201cHow did I blow it?\u201d \u201cWhat is God up to?\u201d \u201cDo you think this is going to lead to this?\u201d\u2014all of these fears, and you just pray like crazy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI tried to say: \u201cOkay; nothing you do can ever stop me from loving you,\u201d and \u201cYou can\u2019t have your own selfish way.\u201d We talked about marriage and choosing\u2014I would go out to breakfast with him. He\u2019d roll his eyes, like, \u201cDad, I don\u2019t really want to spend any time with you.\u201d Honestly, I didn\u2019t want to spend any time with him either!\u2014but it was a choice. What I knew was\u2014my behavior needed to be: \u201cI\u2019ve got to invest in my son\u2019s life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn the personality range of things, we would not be a marriage made in heaven. He\u2019s an artist; I didn\u2019t understand. He\u2019s an introvert; I\u2019m like, over the top, intense extrovert. Sports, sports, sports\u2014and he\u2019s music, music; art, art. I mean, if we would have both had great attitudes, it would have been hard; so God has been very, very kind. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Tell me\u2014did he write this? \u201cYou say I am loved when I can\u2019t feel a thing. You say I\u2019m strong when I think I\u2019m weak. You say I\u2019m held when I\u2019m falling short. When I don\u2019t belong, oh, you say I am Yours, and I believe this.\u201d I mean, obviously, Lauren Daigle sang the lyrics, but he wrote it. I\u2019m not kidding\u2014when I heard that, as well as it was sung by her, the depth of the meaning of that identity in Christ is <em>so<\/em> powerful. It\u2019s beautiful to know that\u2019s something that was born out of your relationship with him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Yes; very, very, very special. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> We were\u2014you know, looking back\u2014thrilled to be his parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve been talking this week about what it is that makes a marriage work, and this book that you\u2019ve written is anchored in Ephesians, Chapter 5, the classic chapter in the Bible on marriage, where couples have learned\u2014if they\u2019ve read this chapter\u2014they\u2019ve learned about God\u2019s assignment for husbands to love wives\/for wives to respect their husbands. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are directions here for how we are to respond to one another differently in a marriage relationship. There are different things that God\u2019s assigned for husbands than what He\u2019s assigned for wives. They are to come together and to fit together in a complementary way. So, if you were to boil down a husband\u2019s job description in a nutshell, can you do that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> I\u2019ll give it my best shot. What I did in this book\u2014because I didn\u2019t get this, and I didn\u2019t see it\u2014I mean, this is more of a coaching book. This is: \u201cOkay, guys, we are supposed to be the head of our family. We\u2019re supposed to lead. We\u2019re supposed to love sacrificially, intentionally, and sensitively; okay? That\u2019s the job description.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay; what\u2019s that look like with your wife? What\u2019s it look like in the finances? What does it mean to be the spiritual leader? What does it mean with your kids? I, literally, went through and wrote chapters and, real practically, gave guys, \u201cHere are some steps to go from Point A to Point B,\u201d because I didn\u2019t see that; and no one taught me that. God brought some great mentors in my life and, then, kind of teamed up with my wife to do the same thing for women. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I think what we need to understand is\u2014we need to own the responsibility of, if I\u2019m going to love intentionally, it says to care and nurture her. I finally got the picture\u2014because my wife had such a damaged self-image and didn\u2019t like herself\u2014but she was this beautiful, beautiful flower that God had given me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe word, nurture, there and care for means to keep her warm and that my job was to help her become all that God had designed her and made her to be; so that was helping her discover her gifts. That means living with her in an understanding way and realizing, like in her particular case\u2014I don\u2019t think she would mind me sharing this\u2014you know, when you had her kind of father and, then, you\u2019re abandoned by someone, I mean, she is <em>so<\/em> sensitive to rejection. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, after <em>40 years<\/em>\u2014I mean, just so we don\u2019t make this like, \u201cOh, we had marriage counseling 40 years ago, and things are great,\u201d\u2014this was ten days ago. We were trying to get some dates or something. I want to get them done really, really, really fast; and she was asking a bunch of questions. I just raised my voice a little bit [intensely]: \u201cWell, honey, what we need to do is\u2026.\u201d\u2014I said it about like that. I looked at her face, and she just shut down; she didn\u2019t say anything. Then, you know, we did something else; and then, in my mind, like men do, I thought, you know: \u201cGet over it. How many years are we going to go?\u201d\u2014you know? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what I knew\/what I\u2019ve learned is\u2014she heard me yell at her\u2014in her mind, I was <em>yelling<\/em> at her. I\u2019m thinking, \u201cI mean, I just like\u201d\u2014just like I just did\u2014\u201cI raised my\u2014\u2018Come on. We need to\u2026.\u2019\u201d\u2014it was that intensity. I looked over at her; I said, \u201cHoney, did I hurt your feelings?\u201d \u201cYes.\u201d \u201cDid it sound like I really yelled at you?\u201d She goes, \u201cYes.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I think we all need to understand\u2014as a man, all our wives are different; but that\u2019s the assignment. I mean, how does Jesus love the church? I think the thing\u2014if I could flip it around\u2014and maybe, you could speak to this far better than me\u2014I don\u2019t think most women realize how sensitive men are to failing, and how much they need to be affirmed, and how much we need\u2014I talk about a man stepping up; and to me, a woman has to step in\u2014not step over\u2014step in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnything I\u2019ve ever accomplished\u2014I\u2019m absolutely convinced I\u2019m going to get to heaven, and the Lord and Theresa are going to say, \u201cShe prayed like crazy, and she stepped in; and Chip ran the errands.\u201d I mean, I\u2019m one high-energy, Energizer Bunny\u2014blah-blah-blah-blah-blah, go-go-go-go-go\u2014but in my loneliest, most dark times, living with her has been the biggest strength of my whole life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> That\u2019s beautiful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that what happens for us, as women\u2014I\u2019m going to speak for myself\u2014is I didn\u2019t grow up in the church. Submission\u2014I remember going to the first <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> conference. When this topic came up on submission, I was sitting in the back of the room, as an attendee; and I had my arms crossed. I thought: \u201cOh, boy, here we come. I\u2019m going to hear about submission and how I need to be a doormat, and I need to let this strong man rule me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a very strong father; and he was not loving, all the time, to my mom. I wanted to protect my mom, and I also wanted to protect me; so I became very strong, thinking, \u201cYou\u2019re not going to hurt <em>me<\/em>.\u201d I think that is what has happened to women. We\u2019re not sure what that looks like\u2014to respond to a man\u2019s love. I know that I became very controlling, and I think that\u2019s what we do out of our fear. I\u2019ve stepped into that, and I think\u2014wouldn\u2019t you say, \u201cI was pretty controlling, Dave?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> OHHH, yes. [Laughter] Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And strong\u2014I\u2019m a strong woman, too, because I thought, if I was passive and I was weak, he would run over me as I felt like my dad did to my mom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we all bring a lot of baggage into that area. As you describe your treatment for Theresa and what that looks like\u2014your love and your care\u2014what woman doesn\u2019t want to do that?\u2014what woman doesn\u2019t want to receive that kind of care and love?\u2014that feels good. But I think we\u2019ve guarded our hearts; because we\u2019re so fearful that we won\u2019t receive that\u2014that we guard our hearts, and we become hard, and we become controlling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> And I think we\u2019ve got to be honest. So many Christian men have not treated their wives well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> As a result, that\u2019s how they respond. I think a lot of bad teaching has been on submission that, actually, might be mild abuse; but it\u2019s <em>not<\/em> good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJuli Slattery\u2014she, actually, did a little Appendix in the back of the book on \u201cHow do you submit in a difficult situation?\u201d She talks about, you know, women are powerful. I mean, when you really think about who really runs a home, women are powerful. She says: \u201cSubmission is our power; but it\u2019s our power, surrendered in meekness, to equip our husbands to become the kind of men that we need and to be the kind of fathers. You bring you\u2019re A-game, and you\u2019re strong. You bring out in your husband and in your family what they need the most.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll tell you what\u2014my wife is one of the most non-passive women in the entire world\u2014[Laughter]\u2014and very submissive. We discuss and do everything together; but we\u2019ve had those 1 percent of the times, where we disagreed. I mean, find a company that has two CEO\u2019s or two head coaches. I mean, at the end of the day\u2014I tell men: \u201cThis isn\u2019t about an authority issue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> \u201cThis is about responsibility.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. You said guys need to learn how to step up\/wives need to learn how to step in; and I think it goes to what we\u2019re talking about here. The natural tendency for men is not to step up but to be passive\u2014to pull back\/to just coast\u2014and: \u201cIf somebody else wants to take charge, yes; that\u2019s fine with me. Go ahead because I\u2019ll just sit here on the sofa and use the remote.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I found that\u2019s what I did. I was passive; and the only time I took charge, early in our marriage, was with anger and with harshness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Chip, when you were saying that, I\u2019ve seen that look from Ann. I didn\u2019t think I was harsh, but I was. It actually got caught once on video tape. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I finally realized and understood, \u201cThis is what God calls me to\u2014as a man, as a husband, and as a father,\u201d\u2014to reject that passivity\/to overcome that and not respond in anger but in gentleness, and love, and cherish her like you said\u2014the flower: protect and bring out the best\u2014there was a difference in the way she stopped trying to control me, not immediately, but over time. It\u2019s like she started to respect and submit in a beautiful, mutual way that made me a better man. I\u2019m with you, Chip\u2014I did not become a better man\u2014she made me that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> She really did; it\u2019s crazy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Well, we do have so much power, as women\u2014not that we have to exert\u2014we have the power to <em>influence<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> You\u2019re not kidding. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Man, I\u2019ve realized, even raising three sons\u2014as I speak life into them\/as I see the greatness God put in them, there is no greater power than that. It breathes life into a home\/into a relationship. I think Dave and I have both seen that, as he loves, sacrificially, and I\u2019m speaking life and supporting\u2014and we\u2019re, side by side, in this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> Yes; absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It\u2019s this beautiful picture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s the stepping <em>in<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She\u2019s an encourager\u2014she is bringing life and energy to the marriage team\/to the family team. It\u2019s <em>huge<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Powerful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> I want to be fair to guys; because what I think happens is\u2014they hear something like this, or their wives hear this\u2014and they say: \u201cOh, you\u2019ve got to listen to this\u2014go, online, FamilyLife. It was so helpful today.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s like: \u201cI don\u2019t know how to do this. How do you actually step up, and what does that look like?\u201d When it comes to relationships and spirituality, and leading in those areas, the reason we work so much and like sports is we are competent there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> But spiritually, you ask a guy how to pray with his wife; and you\u2019re thinking: \u201cIt\u2019s like playing basketball with Michael Jordan. She\u2019s up there, and I\u2019m down here.\u201d So, I think you\u2019ve got to give guys tools and some baby steps. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou were a college quarterback and a coach\u2014it\u2019s like saying, \u201cGo score.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chip:<\/strong> \u201cGive me a play, man!
