Have you guys heard my Bible memory stories?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I think we\u2019re about to, Bob. This should be fun!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I know!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When Mary Ann and I were dating\u2013\u2013I\u2019ll never forget this\u2013\u2013we were sitting, side by side, listening to a speaker. We were at a Bible study, and the speaker was talking about our relationship with Christ. He says, \u201cGod\u2019s given us the Holy Spirit\u2013\u2013it\u2019s like an engagement ring\u2013\u2013we\u2019re sealed with the Spirit.\u201d When he said that, he didn\u2019t use a Scripture verse or anything; he just said, \u201c\u2026we\u2019re sealed with the Spirit.\u201d I watched my girlfriend, who I was sitting next to\u2013\u2013Mary Ann\u2013\u2013I watched her turn in her Bible to Ephesians 1. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; I know right where it is, Bob\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u20141:13.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And she\u2019s got it <em>underlined<\/em> in her Bible. I\u2019m thinking to myself, \u201cWait; he didn\u2019t say where that was and <em>she<\/em> knew where it was!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Were you impressed?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was impressed and intimidated, simultaneously. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh! Okay!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think I asked her later\u2014I said, \u201cHow did you know where that verse was?\u201d She said: \u201cWell, when I was a freshman at the University of Arkansas, the church I was going to\u2013\u2013they gave us Bible memory verses. We had this package of verses that we would memorize, and I memorized it.\u201d And I thought, \u201cYou <em>memorized<\/em> <em>Bible verses<\/em>?\u201d I mean, this was\u2013\u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh, this was <em>new<\/em> for you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This was brand new; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I thought, \u201cWell, that\u2019s pretty interesting.\u201d Later, we\u2019re dating\u2013\u2013this is a few years later\u2013\u2013and she comes to me and she says, \u201cWhat do you think about us memorizing some Scripture together?\u201d I said, \u201cThat would be great.\u201d I said it because we were dating; right?\u2014[Laughter]\u2014not because I thought it was great\u2013\u2013but she\u2019s\u2013\u2013it, obviously, matters to her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> But you\u2019re <em>winning<\/em> her\u2013\u2013you\u2019re <em>wooing<\/em> her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \u201cThat would be great!\u201d I said, \u201cDid you have some verses in mind?\u201d She said, \u201cI was thinking we could memorize, like, maybe a whole chapter.\u201d [Laughter] And I went, \u201cWow!\u201d Of course, I\u2019m thinking: \u201cAre you out of your mind?!\u2014a <em>whole<\/em> chapter of the Bible?!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> This\u2013\u2013this was a test to see\u2013\u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think you\u2019re right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2013\u2013if you were really going to pursue her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I said: \u201cWow! Did you have a chapter in mind?\u201d She said, \u201cI was thinking Philippians 2.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave and Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think I said, \u201cOh, that\u2019s a good one.\u201d I was thinking, \u201cPhilippians\u2013\u2013is that New Testament or Old Testament?\u201d [Laughter] I\u2019m so\u2013\u2013but I said, \u201cOh yes, that would be a good one.\u201d So we started off, together, memorizing Philippians, Chapter 2. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was never\u2014I mean, this was never anything that I was like good at\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014sitting down and memorizing Bible verses. I thought: \u201cYou know, if you need them, they\u2019re there [in the Bible]. Go find them. Why would you memorize them?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we got to Philippians 2, verse 3; and for whatever reason, it memorized quick. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The verse is: \u201cDo nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself.\u201d That verse locked in; and it was locking in because God was saying: \u201cYou need to know that verse. That verse is going to <em>serve<\/em> you well throughout your whole lifetime.\u201d And it has! It\u2019s been one of those things that\u2019s marked my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason I\u2019m talking about Scripture memory is because we\u2019ve got people here who would put you and me\u2013\u2013all of us\u2013\u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob and Ann:<\/strong> \u2013\u2013to shame!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2013\u2013when it comes to this because these guys are involved with the National Bible Bee. Let me introduce them: Hannah Leary is here from the Bible Bee\u2013\u2013welcome back, Hannah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Thank you so much for having me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And Seth Ross is joining us as well. This is your first time to be on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> to talk about the Bible Bee; right Seth?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell everybody, Seth\u2013\u2013how old are you and where are you from? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> I\u2019m 12 and from Mission Viejo, California.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve been involved in the Bible Bee for\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> \u2014three years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; alright. We\u2019re going to dive into this; but just in case our listeners don\u2019t know\u2013\u2013because you guys [Dave and Ann]\u2013\u2013had you heard of the Bible Bee before we\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> No; I had never heard of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No; I\u2019ve heard of the <em>Spelling Bee<\/em>, but not the Bible Bee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s a little bit of how this whole thing got started. In fact, Hannah, you can probably tell the story better than I can. There was a man in Texas, who watched kids getting a lot of money for memorizing spelling words; and he thought, \u201cWhy are we wasting our time on spelling words?\u201d\u2014right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Exactly; yes. It\u2019s funded by the Shelby Kennedy Foundation. It was inspired by a young 23-year-old girl, who had a <em>love<\/em> for Scripture memory. A Texas gentleman was at her funeral\u2013\u2013she died of cancer at the age of 23 years old. He was sitting there, at her funeral, and just was thinking: \u201cWow. We need to pass on her legacy through inspiring kids to memorize Scripture.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis idea came to him\u2013\u2013he <em>loved<\/em> competition\u2013\u2013he loved watching the Spelling Bee and he\u2019s like, \u201cWhat if we could incentivize kids to learn verses and memorize Scripture? And what if we could make it a competition, where it\u2019s a fun way to incentivize kids to get into the Word of God?\u201d And that\u2019s exactly what he did. The competition started in 2009, and it\u2019s been going ever since.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was just at the tenth anniversary of the Bible Bee\u2013\u2013back in December of 2018\u2013\u2013and got to watch competitors from both the Primary Division, then the Junior Division and then the Senior Division\u2013\u2013there are three divisions of the kids. These kids\u2013\u2013I mean, the first time you\u2019re there, and you\u2019re watching these kids just recite\u2013\u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And it\u2019s not just one verse, I\u2019m assuming.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No! They\u2019re reciting chapters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They\u2019re reciting extended portions of Scripture from memory. The experience of being in the audience\u2013\u2013two-fold\u2013\u2013first of all, you\u2019re amazed at these kids and what they\u2019ve learned. Secondly, you are <em>washed<\/em> with the Word over and over again\u2013\u2013I mean, you\u2019re just hearing Scripture recited over and over again\u2013\u2013and that\u2019s <em>powerful<\/em>. Then, you\u2019ve got the experience of recognizing that this is not just a competition but these kids\u2019 lives are being molded and shaped by what they\u2019ve spent their time in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were a competitor in Year One of the Bible Bee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Yes; when I was 12 years old\u2013\u20132009\u2013\u2013I signed up for the competition. I had been involved in spelling bees and geography bees in the past, and I saw this ad for the National Bible Bee. I was like: \u201cMom! Dad! Don\u2019t you think we can get involved with this?\u201d I love competition\u2013\u2013I was not good at spelling\u2013\u2013but I was involved in spelling bees. [Laughter] But this is something I could get really excited about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe signed up that first year, when I was 12 years old\u2013\u2013qualified for the national competition\u2014and I just kept doing it. It was something that was addicting\u2013\u2013I wanted to come back and do more. I competed from the time I was 12 until I won, when I was 17\u2014so six years of my life I devoted to memorizing and studying Scripture. I couldn\u2019t be more grateful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How many verses\u2013\u2013do you know how many you\u2019ve memorized?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> A lot! [Laughter] Between\u2013\u2013like I said, it\u2019s addicting and the more\u2013\u2013once you start, you just get a hunger and a thirst for the Word of God. The Bible Bee starts with a summer study and the National Competition ends in the fall. In the off-season\u2013\u2013what I would do\u2013\u2013in fact, after that first year, I noticed that I had a bunch of Ephesians 1 memorized; and a little bit of Ephesians 2; and a big portion of Ephesians 3; and a little bit of Ephesians 4\u2013\u2013and I\u2019m like, \u201cI might as well memorize the whole book!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> So I went ahead\u2013\u2013in the off-season\u2014and memorized the whole Book of Ephesians. Then, I was like: \u201cOh! I could do that with Philippians!\u201d And I ended up\u2013\u2013not just that year\u2014but throughout the years of my competing in the National Bible Bee, I memorized 12 books of the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> <em>Really?!<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> That is <em>phenomenal!<\/em> I think so many of us have that aspiration, but for you\u2013\u2013I love the word, \u201caddicted,\u201d to memorizing Scripture. That\u2019s not something you hear very often, and this would be a <em>good<\/em> addiction; because I\u2019m guessing, as you\u2019ve memorized it, it\u2019s gone into your mind; it drops into your heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Has that happened to you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Exactly. I think I realize that\u2013\u2013I\u2019m 21 right now\u2013\u2013and I think I realize that, more and more, as I continue to grow older and move into adulthood. You notice it, when you\u2019re in middle school and high school, and you\u2019re making some life decisions; and you\u2019re just seeking God\u2019s will for your life. As I\u2019ve moved into adulthood, I just realized, even more, what an <em>amazing<\/em> treasure that is and what an amazing <em>foundation<\/em> that is for the rest of my life; you know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Seth, you\u2019re in the Junior Division. For last year, do you know how many verses you had to memorize to get ready?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Approximately 844\u2013\u2013then, there\u2019s also the books studies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201c<em>Approximately<\/em>\u201d 844; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cApproximately\u201d; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right\u2013\u2013give or take a verse\u2013\u2013and then, book studies. What are the book studies?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Each year, the summer study gives you a book to study, along with a Discovery Journal. Then, after the summer study, the top 120 contestants in each of the 3 divisions are chosen. Then, you have another book to study. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis year, it was James for the summer study. We went through all four chapters in the Discovery Journal as well as memorizing one passage from each chapter in James. Then, also, some other cross references around the Scriptures\u2013\u2013so one passage for each passage in James. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, Philippians\u2014we had the entire book to study, <em>but<\/em> there was no Discovery Journal for when you do it for the National Competition; so you have to study it yourself. The really nice thing about it is that the contestants actually <em>help<\/em> each other. They make Quizlet sets and post those on Quizlet. Then, we can all get the Quizlet sets and study from those; and that helps us too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; so we\u2019re in the off-season right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Are you working on something right now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Um, yes! Was it your parents or was it <em>you<\/em>, who said, \u201cI want to be in the Bible Bee.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Bible Bee\u2013\u2013someone from Awana<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> told us about it. They\u2019re like: \u201cHey! Let\u2019s go check it out!\u201d\u2014sort of both me and my parents. They were like, \u201cOh, this seems fun!\u201d And then, we started with it; and they\u2019re like: \u201cYes! Let\u2019s keep doing this!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What is so exciting about it? Why do you love it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Fun, fellowship, and just learning God\u2019s Word. God loves us and He gave us His Word so that we can enjoy it! It\u2019s not just a book of the rules that we <em>must<\/em> follow or we get zapped or stuck in the time loop or something\u2013\u2013but it\u2019s things that actually help us to enjoy our lives. If God made us\u2013\u2013and He made the world\u2013\u2013then He really ought to be the Person who <em>knows<\/em> how to live best, what do with our lives best\u2014our bodies, the world, the earth\u2013\u2013how to take care of <em>everything<\/em> best.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what He does in His Word\u2013\u2013He gives us that manual for life; so that we can understand life, understand Him, and <em>really, truly<\/em> enjoy life to the fullest.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Could I just say, again?\u2013\u201312.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; 12 years old!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Hannah, Seth was awarded with an award at this year\u2019s Bible Bee. Tell us about that award.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Seth won the Chairman\u2019s Oratory Award at this year\u2019s National Competition. That award is given to one competitor, who proclaims God\u2019s Word with passion, with excitement, with enthusiasm\u2013\u2013and like you said, not just rote memory\u2013\u2013but proclaims it as if he<em> knows<\/em> what he\u2019s saying and really does it with passion. This year, we were so excited that Seth won that award. He got up there\u2014so excited to then <em>explain<\/em> why he loves it, and why he loves memorizing Scripture, and what that means to him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And when he started doing that, we just had church right then!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No kidding!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m telling you!\u2014he just started preaching.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And everybody was like: \u201cYou go! C\u2019mon!\u201d It was great!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wow! Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was a great moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I think there are probably a lot of listeners that are thinking: \u201cOh! I would <em>love<\/em> my kids to memorize the Word of God, but they have no interest.\u201d Maybe\u2013\u2013like, how do we go about this? Do you have any advice for them? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Yes! So that\u2019s one of the great things about God\u2019s Word. You don\u2019t have to force kids to play video games.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> That\u2019s true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Wonder: \u201cWhy is that?\u201d It\u2019s like video games are <em>designed<\/em> to make you want to play them. The great thing is\u2014God\u2019s Word can do the same thing. If you just spend time in God\u2019s Word\u2013\u2013and also, sometimes, if you look at the more <em>interesting<\/em> passages\u2013\u2013and when you start reading the exciting passages\u2014maybe, you\u2019ll glide into some of the more doctrinal passages that focus on that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod\u2019s Word says\u2013\u2013it\u2019s for \u201creproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto every good work.\u201d So God\u2019s Word has something for <em>everyone<\/em>. That treasure shows you how to find wisdom, which is more precious than rubies. Then, as you learn more of it, it really becomes a <em>part<\/em> of you\u2013\u2013and then, when things pop up, you can say: \u201cWait a second! I know a Scripture for that.\u201d Then, you just get into it, and into it more, and more, and more; and you really start <em>enjoying<\/em> it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike they say: \u201cIf you pretend that you\u2019re happy, you\u2019ll eventually be happy,\u201d \u201cIf you start getting into God\u2019s Word, you\u2019ll eventually love it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> How do <em>you<\/em> go about memorizing Scripture? What does that look like to you, Hannah?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Often\u2013\u2013having memorized so much in my middle school and high school years\u2013\u2013you\u2019re like: \u201cOh, I\u2019m good to go. I don\u2019t need to\u2013\u2013I\u2019ve memorized as much as I need to.\u201d Sometimes, you can use that excuse. I\u2019m convicted every year, when I go back to the National Bible Bee, and I moderate the competition. I watch contestants like Seth come up\u2014and like Bob said\u2014just be washed by the Word and, once again, convicted of how I need that daily in my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not rocket science\u2013\u2013it\u2019s just the discipline to just, every day, get into the Word of God. And repetition and\u2013\u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Do you write it? Do you listen to it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Sometimes, I will write it\u2014especially, when I\u2019m studying specifically\u2013\u2013but I will write it and then I just speak it over, and over, and over, and over again. Oftentimes, when I\u2019m on my way to work, I\u2019ll\u2013\u2013before I get out of my car, I\u2019ll just pull it up on my phone; and I\u2019ll recite whatever I\u2019m trying to learn that day. Having those specific times to do it, whether it\u2019s right before bed, when I wake up, or when I\u2019m getting out of the car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHaving an accountability partner\u2013\u2013our family loves to memorize Scripture\/our church loves to memorize Scripture together; so having those people to memorize with you is always super, super helpful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s one of the great things about the National Bible Bee. You can hear our story\u2013\u2013Seth\u2014and I think: \u201cWow; I could never do that. I could never memorize that much Scripture; I could never do books of the Bible or get up on stage in front of hundreds of people and quote word-perfectly\u201d; but the National Bible Bee doesn\u2019t start there. It starts with the summer study, and we\u2019re in the registration period for that right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe summer study goes from the beginning of June to the end of August. It\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> starting place for families to get into the Word of God together. You don\u2019t have to know <em>how<\/em> to memorize. You don\u2019t have to have all this knowledge, coming into it\u2013\u2013and if you do have some experience, that\u2019s great as well. It\u2019s a great place for kids of all ages\u2014family units\/communities\u2014there\u2019s host groups across the country that you can join. It\u2019s a great starting point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s a Discovery Journal, like Seth mentioned. It\u2019s an eight-week study that takes you through a specific portion of Scripture, and there\u2019s 14 memory verses. Our family hosts a local group. We had a family, who had not done a ton of memory\u2013\u2013Scripture memory\u2013\u2013in the past. When they signed up, their son was seven years old, which is the beginning age for the Primary Division. He was super-excited to participate, and he ended up memorizing all 14 passages that summer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was <em>so<\/em> excited; his family was so excited! One of the best things about it\u2013\u2013at the end of the summer\u2013\u2013we have a Proclaim Day, in which the kids can recite the Scriptures and just have a celebration of what they\u2019ve learned throughout the summer. He recited his verses\u2013\u2013he was so excited about it! One of the really cool things about it was his younger sister\u2013\u2013who was probably three of four at the time\u2013\u2013wasn\u2019t competing\/wasn\u2019t part of the study\u2014but obviously, was <em>around<\/em> her brother as he was learning these verses; and she could recite them as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> That\u2019s amazing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> That\u2019s one of the <em>best<\/em> things about the National Bible Bee, because it brings <em>families<\/em> together around the Word of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There are churches that take this on as kind of a summer family activity, where different families in the church say, \u201cLet\u2019s do this and make this a part of what we\u2019re doing for our summer.\u201d As you think about what you\u2019re headed into this summer, you\u2019re probably thinking about: \u201cOkay; do we have our vacation time set?\u201d \u201cWhere are we going?\u201d \u201cWhat week are you going to take off?\u201d \u201cAre the kids doing camp?\u201d \u201cWhat about swimming lessons?\u201d or whatever you\u2019ve got in your summer mix of things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if you said: \u201cYou know what?\u2013\u2013take eight weeks and just have a project, where as a family, you\u2019re working on memorizing verses of Scripture.\u201d You get to the end of the summer; and you\u2019ll have great memories of sailing, or swimming, or whatever your family is doing on vacation\u2013\u2013but you\u2019ve got something, now, that\u2019s more than just great memories\u2013\u2013you\u2019ve got something that\u2019s a foundation for a lifetime. You\u2019ll watch\u2013\u2013some of your kids, who will get <em>really<\/em> excited about this, and when the summer is over, they\u2019re like, \u201cCan we do more?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> The greatest thing is the Word of God is life-changing. I mean, you two know it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember back to my first months of committing my life to Christ\u2013\u2013one of the first things my discipler\/my mentor told me\u2013\u2013I was in college\u2013\u2013is: \u201cYou need to become a man of the Word.\u201d I was like, \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d You know, I honestly didn\u2019t know one Bible verse in the entire Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe showed me what Scripture memorization looked like. I can remember the first verse I ever memorized\u2013\u2013Psalm 119:6. I had little 3x5 cards in my car\/on my mirror\u2013\u2013it was like the Word of God is your foundation with Christ\u2013\u2013and literally, it\u2019s life-changing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> So to hear what you guys are doing\u2013\u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It\u2019s inspiring!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes! But this is being intentional and purposeful, as a family, to make sure that the spiritual foundation of your family is what\u2019s important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThank you, guys, for being with us. As the competition goes on, you will need to spend more time with it. You know, that\u2019s the thing about the summer study\u2013\u2013you might not even memorize all 14 passages. [Laughter] That feels like such a cop-out!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That is a cop-out, but we\u2019ll take it anyway.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> There you go! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You do think Scripture memory is important?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> I <em>do<\/em> recall things in moments. I <em>know<\/em> the Spirit prompts me in certain situations or in certain decision points to things that I go, \u201cI have not thought of that verse in forever!\u201d but because it was imbedded, at one point, the Spirit makes it come alive. I think that\u2019s the benefit of Scripture memory. I just think: \u201cWhat an encouragement\u2013\u2013listening to these kids today! There\u2019s something so inspiring\u2013\u2013and also convicting, if I\u2019m honest\u2013\u2013about hearing these young people speak the Word of God with such clarity and passion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt reminds me of a John Stott quote\u2013\u2013he said, \u201cA man who loves his wife will love her letters and her photographs, because they speak to him of her; so if we love the Lord Jesus, we shall love the Bible because it speaks to us of Him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s two questions I ask myself and I invite us <em>all<\/em> to ask ourselves\u2014one: \u201cWhat am I doing to fan into flame my love for the Word of God today?\u201d And two: \u201cAm I encouraging and equipping my kids, or my grandkids, and others that God has put in my path to fall more in love with the living and active Word of God?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you get the Timothy trophy\u2013\u2013in Awana?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> I never won it. Have you guys heard my Bible memory stories?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I think we\u2019re about to, Bob. This should be fun!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I know!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When Mary Ann and I were dating\u2013\u2013I\u2019ll never forget this\u2013\u2013we were sitting, side by side, listening to a speaker. We were at a Bible study, and the speaker was talking about our relationship with Christ. He says, \u201cGod\u2019s given us the Holy Spirit\u2013\u2013it\u2019s like an engagement ring\u2013\u2013we\u2019re sealed with the Spirit.\u201d When he said that, he didn\u2019t use a Scripture verse or anything; he just said, \u201c\u2026we\u2019re sealed with the Spirit.\u201d I watched my girlfriend, who I was sitting next to\u2013\u2013Mary Ann\u2013\u2013I watched her turn in her Bible to Ephesians 1. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; I know right where it is, Bob\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u20141:13.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And she\u2019s got it <em>underlined<\/em> in her Bible. I\u2019m thinking to myself, \u201cWait; he didn\u2019t say where that was and <em>she<\/em> knew where it was!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Were you impressed?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was impressed and intimidated, simultaneously. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh! Okay!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think I asked her later\u2014I said, \u201cHow did you know where that verse was?\u201d She said: \u201cWell, when I was a freshman at the University of Arkansas, the church I was going to\u2013\u2013they gave us Bible memory verses. We had this package of verses that we would memorize, and I memorized it.\u201d And I thought, \u201cYou <em>memorized<\/em> <em>Bible verses<\/em>?\u201d I mean, this was\u2013\u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh, this was <em>new<\/em> for you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This was brand new; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I thought, \u201cWell, that\u2019s pretty interesting.\u201d Later, we\u2019re dating\u2013\u2013this is a few years later\u2013\u2013and she comes to me and she says, \u201cWhat do you think about us memorizing some Scripture together?\u201d I said, \u201cThat would be great.\u201d I said it because we were dating; right?\u2014[Laughter]\u2014not because I thought it was great\u2013\u2013but she\u2019s\u2013\u2013it, obviously, matters to her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> But you\u2019re <em>winning<\/em> her\u2013\u2013you\u2019re <em>wooing<\/em> her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \u201cThat would be great!\u201d I said, \u201cDid you have some verses in mind?\u201d She said, \u201cI was thinking we could memorize, like, maybe a whole chapter.\u201d [Laughter] And I went, \u201cWow!\u201d Of course, I\u2019m thinking: \u201cAre you out of your mind?!\u2014a <em>whole<\/em> chapter of the Bible?!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> This\u2013\u2013this was a test to see\u2013\u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think you\u2019re right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u2013\u2013if you were really going to pursue her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I said: \u201cWow! Did you have a chapter in mind?\u201d She said, \u201cI was thinking Philippians 2.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave and Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think I said, \u201cOh, that\u2019s a good one.\u201d I was thinking, \u201cPhilippians\u2013\u2013is that New Testament or Old Testament?\u201d [Laughter] I\u2019m so\u2013\u2013but I said, \u201cOh yes, that would be a good one.\u201d So we started off, together, memorizing Philippians, Chapter 2. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was never\u2014I mean, this was never anything that I was like good at\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014sitting down and memorizing Bible verses. I thought: \u201cYou know, if you need them, they\u2019re there [in the Bible]. Go find them. Why would you memorize them?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Oh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we got to Philippians 2, verse 3; and for whatever reason, it memorized quick. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The verse is: \u201cDo nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself.\u201d That verse locked in; and it was locking in because God was saying: \u201cYou need to know that verse. That verse is going to <em>serve<\/em> you well throughout your whole lifetime.\u201d And it has! It\u2019s been one of those things that\u2019s marked my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason I\u2019m talking about Scripture memory is because we\u2019ve got people here who would put you and me\u2013\u2013all of us\u2013\u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob and Ann:<\/strong> \u2013\u2013to shame!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2013\u2013when it comes to this because these guys are involved with the National Bible Bee. Let me introduce them: Hannah Leary is here from the Bible Bee\u2013\u2013welcome back, Hannah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Thank you so much for having me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And Seth Ross is joining us as well. This is your first time to be on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> to talk about the Bible Bee; right Seth?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell everybody, Seth\u2013\u2013how old are you and where are you from? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> I\u2019m 12 and from Mission Viejo, California.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve been involved in the Bible Bee for\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> \u2014three years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; alright. We\u2019re going to dive into this; but just in case our listeners don\u2019t know\u2013\u2013because you guys [Dave and Ann]\u2013\u2013had you heard of the Bible Bee before we\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> No; I had never heard of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No; I\u2019ve heard of the <em>Spelling Bee<\/em>, but not the Bible Bee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s a little bit of how this whole thing got started. In fact, Hannah, you can probably tell the story better than I can. There was a man in Texas, who watched kids getting a lot of money for memorizing spelling words; and he thought, \u201cWhy are we wasting our time on spelling words?\u201d\u2014right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Exactly; yes. It\u2019s funded by the Shelby Kennedy Foundation. It was inspired by a young 23-year-old girl, who had a <em>love<\/em> for Scripture memory. A Texas gentleman was at her funeral\u2013\u2013she died of cancer at the age of 23 years old. He was sitting there, at her funeral, and just was thinking: \u201cWow. We need to pass on her legacy through inspiring kids to memorize Scripture.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis idea came to him\u2013\u2013he <em>loved<\/em> competition\u2013\u2013he loved watching the Spelling Bee and he\u2019s like, \u201cWhat if we could incentivize kids to learn verses and memorize Scripture? And what if we could make it a competition, where it\u2019s a fun way to incentivize kids to get into the Word of God?\u201d And that\u2019s exactly what he did. The competition started in 2009, and it\u2019s been going ever since.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was just at the tenth anniversary of the Bible Bee\u2013\u2013back in December of 2018\u2013\u2013and got to watch competitors from both the Primary Division, then the Junior Division and then the Senior Division\u2013\u2013there are three divisions of the kids. These kids\u2013\u2013I mean, the first time you\u2019re there, and you\u2019re watching these kids just recite\u2013\u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> And it\u2019s not just one verse, I\u2019m assuming.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No! They\u2019re reciting chapters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They\u2019re reciting extended portions of Scripture from memory. The experience of being in the audience\u2013\u2013two-fold\u2013\u2013first of all, you\u2019re amazed at these kids and what they\u2019ve learned. Secondly, you are <em>washed<\/em> with the Word over and over again\u2013\u2013I mean, you\u2019re just hearing Scripture recited over and over again\u2013\u2013and that\u2019s <em>powerful<\/em>. Then, you\u2019ve got the experience of recognizing that this is not just a competition but these kids\u2019 lives are being molded and shaped by what they\u2019ve spent their time in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were a competitor in Year One of the Bible Bee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Yes; when I was 12 years old\u2013\u20132009\u2013\u2013I signed up for the competition. I had been involved in spelling bees and geography bees in the past, and I saw this ad for the National Bible Bee. I was like: \u201cMom! Dad! Don\u2019t you think we can get involved with this?\u201d I love competition\u2013\u2013I was not good at spelling\u2013\u2013but I was involved in spelling bees. [Laughter] But this is something I could get really excited about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe signed up that first year, when I was 12 years old\u2013\u2013qualified for the national competition\u2014and I just kept doing it. It was something that was addicting\u2013\u2013I wanted to come back and do more. I competed from the time I was 12 until I won, when I was 17\u2014so six years of my life I devoted to memorizing and studying Scripture. I couldn\u2019t be more grateful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How many verses\u2013\u2013do you know how many you\u2019ve memorized?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> A lot! [Laughter] Between\u2013\u2013like I said, it\u2019s addicting and the more\u2013\u2013once you start, you just get a hunger and a thirst for the Word of God. The Bible Bee starts with a summer study and the National Competition ends in the fall. In the off-season\u2013\u2013what I would do\u2013\u2013in fact, after that first year, I noticed that I had a bunch of Ephesians 1 memorized; and a little bit of Ephesians 2; and a big portion of Ephesians 3; and a little bit of Ephesians 4\u2013\u2013and I\u2019m like, \u201cI might as well memorize the whole book!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> So I went ahead\u2013\u2013in the off-season\u2014and memorized the whole Book of Ephesians. Then, I was like: \u201cOh! I could do that with Philippians!\u201d And I ended up\u2013\u2013not just that year\u2014but throughout the years of my competing in the National Bible Bee, I memorized 12 books of the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> <em>Really?!<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> That is <em>phenomenal!<\/em> I think so many of us have that aspiration, but for you\u2013\u2013I love the word, \u201caddicted,\u201d to memorizing Scripture. That\u2019s not something you hear very often, and this would be a <em>good<\/em> addiction; because I\u2019m guessing, as you\u2019ve memorized it, it\u2019s gone into your mind; it drops into your heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Has that happened to you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Exactly. I think I realize that\u2013\u2013I\u2019m 21 right now\u2013\u2013and I think I realize that, more and more, as I continue to grow older and move into adulthood. You notice it, when you\u2019re in middle school and high school, and you\u2019re making some life decisions; and you\u2019re just seeking God\u2019s will for your life. As I\u2019ve moved into adulthood, I just realized, even more, what an <em>amazing<\/em> treasure that is and what an amazing <em>foundation<\/em> that is for the rest of my life; you know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Seth, you\u2019re in the Junior Division. For last year, do you know how many verses you had to memorize to get ready?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Approximately 844\u2013\u2013then, there\u2019s also the books studies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201c<em>Approximately<\/em>\u201d 844; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> \u201cApproximately\u201d; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right\u2013\u2013give or take a verse\u2013\u2013and then, book studies. What are the book studies?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Each year, the summer study gives you a book to study, along with a Discovery Journal. Then, after the summer study, the top 120 contestants in each of the 3 divisions are chosen. Then, you have another book to study. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis year, it was James for the summer study. We went through all four chapters in the Discovery Journal as well as memorizing one passage from each chapter in James. Then, also, some other cross references around the Scriptures\u2013\u2013so one passage for each passage in James. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, Philippians\u2014we had the entire book to study, <em>but<\/em> there was no Discovery Journal for when you do it for the National Competition; so you have to study it yourself. The really nice thing about it is that the contestants actually <em>help<\/em> each other. They make Quizlet sets and post those on Quizlet. Then, we can all get the Quizlet sets and study from those; and that helps us too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; so we\u2019re in the off-season right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Are you working on something right now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Um, yes! They\u2019re like: \u201cHey! Let\u2019s go check it out!\u201d\u2014sort of both me and my parents. They were like, \u201cOh, this seems fun!\u201d And then, we started with it; and they\u2019re like: \u201cYes! Let\u2019s keep doing this!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What is so exciting about it? Why do you love it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Fun, fellowship, and just learning God\u2019s Word. God loves us and He gave us His Word so that we can enjoy it! It\u2019s not just a book of the rules that we <em>must<\/em> follow or we get zapped or stuck in the time loop or something\u2013\u2013but it\u2019s things that actually help us to enjoy our lives. If God made us\u2013\u2013and He made the world\u2013\u2013then He really ought to be the Person who <em>knows<\/em> how to live best, what do with our lives best\u2014our bodies, the world, the earth\u2013\u2013how to take care of <em>everything<\/em> best.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what He does in His Word\u2013\u2013He gives us that manual for life; so that we can understand life, understand Him, and <em>really, truly<\/em> enjoy life to the fullest.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Could I just say, again?\u2013\u201312.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes; 12 years old!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Hannah, Seth was awarded with an award at this year\u2019s Bible Bee. Tell us about that award.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Seth won the Chairman\u2019s Oratory Award at this year\u2019s National Competition. That award is given to one competitor, who proclaims God\u2019s Word with passion, with excitement, with enthusiasm\u2013\u2013and like you said, not just rote memory\u2013\u2013but proclaims it as if he<em> knows<\/em> what he\u2019s saying and really does it with passion. This year, we were so excited that Seth won that award. He got up there\u2014so excited to then <em>explain<\/em> why he loves it, and why he loves memorizing Scripture, and what that means to him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And when he started doing that, we just had church right then!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> No kidding!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m telling you!\u2014he just started preaching.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And everybody was like: \u201cYou go! C\u2019mon!\u201d It was great!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Wow! Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was a great moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> I think there are probably a lot of listeners that are thinking: \u201cOh! I would <em>love<\/em> my kids to memorize the Word of God, but they have no interest.\u201d Maybe\u2013\u2013like, how do we go about this? Do you have any advice for them? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Yes! So that\u2019s one of the great things about God\u2019s Word. You don\u2019t have to force kids to play video games.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> That\u2019s true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seth:<\/strong> Wonder: \u201cWhy is that?\u201d It\u2019s like video games are <em>designed<\/em> to make you want to play them. The great thing is\u2014God\u2019s Word can do the same thing. If you just spend time in God\u2019s Word\u2013\u2013and also, sometimes, if you look at the more <em>interesting<\/em> passages\u2013\u2013and when you start reading the exciting passages\u2014maybe, you\u2019ll glide into some of the more doctrinal passages that focus on that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod\u2019s Word says\u2013\u2013it\u2019s for \u201creproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto every good work.\u201d So God\u2019s Word has something for <em>everyone<\/em>. That treasure shows you how to find wisdom, which is more precious than rubies. Then, as you learn more of it, it really becomes a <em>part<\/em> of you\u2013\u2013and then, when things pop up, you can say: \u201cWait a second! I know a Scripture for that.\u201d Then, you just get into it, and into it more, and more, and more; and you really start <em>enjoying<\/em> it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike they say: \u201cIf you pretend that you\u2019re happy, you\u2019ll eventually be happy,\u201d \u201cIf you start getting into God\u2019s Word, you\u2019ll eventually love it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> How do <em>you<\/em> go about memorizing Scripture? What does that look like to you, Hannah?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Often\u2013\u2013having memorized so much in my middle school and high school years\u2013\u2013you\u2019re like: \u201cOh, I\u2019m good to go. I don\u2019t need to\u2013\u2013I\u2019ve memorized as much as I need to.\u201d Sometimes, you can use that excuse. I\u2019m convicted every year, when I go back to the National Bible Bee, and I moderate the competition. I watch contestants like Seth come up\u2014and like Bob said\u2014just be washed by the Word and, once again, convicted of how I need that daily in my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not rocket science\u2013\u2013it\u2019s just the discipline to just, every day, get into the Word of God. And repetition and\u2013\u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> Do you write it? Do you listen to it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Sometimes, I will write it\u2014especially, when I\u2019m studying specifically\u2013\u2013but I will write it and then I just speak it over, and over, and over, and over again. Oftentimes, when I\u2019m on my way to work, I\u2019ll\u2013\u2013before I get out of my car, I\u2019ll just pull it up on my phone; and I\u2019ll recite whatever I\u2019m trying to learn that day. Having those specific times to do it, whether it\u2019s right before bed, when I wake up, or when I\u2019m getting out of the car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHaving an accountability partner\u2013\u2013our family loves to memorize Scripture\/our church loves to memorize Scripture together; so having those people to memorize with you is always super, super helpful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s one of the great things about the National Bible Bee. You can hear our story\u2013\u2013Seth\u2014and I think: \u201cWow; I could never do that. I could never memorize that much Scripture; I could never do books of the Bible or get up on stage in front of hundreds of people and quote word-perfectly\u201d; but the National Bible Bee doesn\u2019t start there. It starts with the summer study, and we\u2019re in the registration period for that right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe summer study goes from the beginning of June to the end of August. It\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> starting place for families to get into the Word of God together. You don\u2019t have to know <em>how<\/em> to memorize. You don\u2019t have to have all this knowledge, coming into it\u2013\u2013and if you do have some experience, that\u2019s great as well. It\u2019s a great place for kids of all ages\u2014family units\/communities\u2014there\u2019s host groups across the country that you can join. It\u2019s a great starting point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s a Discovery Journal, like Seth mentioned. It\u2019s an eight-week study that takes you through a specific portion of Scripture, and there\u2019s 14 memory verses. Our family hosts a local group. We had a family, who had not done a ton of memory\u2013\u2013Scripture memory\u2013\u2013in the past. When they signed up, their son was seven years old, which is the beginning age for the Primary Division. He was super-excited to participate, and he ended up memorizing all 14 passages that summer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was <em>so<\/em> excited; his family was so excited! One of the best things about it\u2013\u2013at the end of the summer\u2013\u2013we have a Proclaim Day, in which the kids can recite the Scriptures and just have a celebration of what they\u2019ve learned throughout the summer. He recited his verses\u2013\u2013he was so excited about it! One of the really cool things about it was his younger sister\u2013\u2013who was probably three of four at the time\u2013\u2013wasn\u2019t competing\/wasn\u2019t part of the study\u2014but obviously, was <em>around<\/em> her brother as he was learning these verses; and she could recite them as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> That\u2019s amazing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> That\u2019s one of the <em>best<\/em> things about the National Bible Bee, because it brings <em>families<\/em> together around the Word of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There are churches that take this on as kind of a summer family activity, where different families in the church say, \u201cLet\u2019s do this and make this a part of what we\u2019re doing for our summer.\u201d As you think about what you\u2019re headed into this summer, you\u2019re probably thinking about: \u201cOkay; do we have our vacation time set?\u201d \u201cWhere are we going?\u201d \u201cWhat week are you going to take off?\u201d \u201cAre the kids doing camp?\u201d \u201cWhat about swimming lessons?\u201d or whatever you\u2019ve got in your summer mix of things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if you said: \u201cYou know what?\u2013\u2013take eight weeks and just have a project, where as a family, you\u2019re working on memorizing verses of Scripture.\u201d You get to the end of the summer; and you\u2019ll have great memories of sailing, or swimming, or whatever your family is doing on vacation\u2013\u2013but you\u2019ve got something, now, that\u2019s more than just great memories\u2013\u2013you\u2019ve got something that\u2019s a foundation for a lifetime. You\u2019ll watch\u2013\u2013some of your kids, who will get <em>really<\/em> excited about this, and when the summer is over, they\u2019re like, \u201cCan we do more?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> The greatest thing is the Word of God is life-changing. I mean, you two know it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember back to my first months of committing my life to Christ\u2013\u2013one of the first things my discipler\/my mentor told me\u2013\u2013I was in college\u2013\u2013is: \u201cYou need to become a man of the Word.\u201d I was like, \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d You know, I honestly didn\u2019t know one Bible verse in the entire Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe showed me what Scripture memorization looked like. I can remember the first verse I ever memorized\u2013\u2013Psalm 119:6. I had little 3x5 cards in my car\/on my mirror\u2013\u2013it was like the Word of God is your foundation with Christ\u2013\u2013and literally, it\u2019s life-changing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> So to hear what you guys are doing\u2013\u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong> It\u2019s inspiring!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Think of this\u2013\u2013three hours of Fortnight or three hours of being in the Word; you pick. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Exactly; good point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> They both have consequences.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> Even three minutes! You know, that\u2019s the thing about the summer study\u2013\u2013you might not even memorize all 14 passages. Some people\u2013\u201314 is a lot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong> But one verse memorized is better than nothing. Did you do a lot of Scripture memory when you were growing up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> You know, I did do some Awana\u2013\u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> \u2013\u2013growing up, so there was a baseline.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Give me a verse\u2013\u2013what do you remember from Awana?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Candidly, at the table, John 3:16 is the first verse coming to mind. [Laughter] That feels like such a cop-out!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That is a cop-out, but we\u2019ll take it anyway.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> There you go! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You do think Scripture memory is important?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> I <em>do<\/em> recall things in moments. I <em>know<\/em> the Spirit prompts me in certain situations or in certain decision points to things that I go, \u201cI have not thought of that verse in forever!\u201d but because it was imbedded, at one point, the Spirit makes it come alive. I think that\u2019s the benefit of Scripture memory. I just think: \u201cWhat an encouragement\u2013\u2013listening to these kids today! There\u2019s something so inspiring\u2013\u2013and also convicting, if I\u2019m honest\u2013\u2013about hearing these young people speak the Word of God with such clarity and passion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt reminds me of a John Stott quote\u2013\u2013he said, \u201cA man who loves his wife will love her letters and her photographs, because they speak to him of her; so if we love the Lord Jesus, we shall love the Bible because it speaks to us of Him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s two questions I ask myself and I invite us <em>all<\/em> to ask ourselves\u2014one: \u201cWhat am I doing to fan into flame my love for the Word of God today?\u201d And two: \u201cAm I encouraging and equipping my kids, or my grandkids, and others that God has put in my path to fall more in love with the living and active Word of God?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you get the Timothy trophy\u2013\u2013in Awana?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> I never won it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Busted\u2014right here on national radio.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Yes. Busted; right.
