I know that he was going to do anything he could do to come home to us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Or like Gracia Burnham who, with her husband Martin, was serving as a missionary in the Philippians before the two of them were abducted. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gracia: <\/strong>I looked over at him, and he was bleeding from his chest. I knew from experience that leg wounds heal\u2014but chest wounds don\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Or like Jerry Sittser who in one moment was in a car wreck where he lost his wife, his mother, and his daughter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry: <\/strong>I got the kids out who were mobile and then went back to try to attend to Lynda. I got a pulse but knew she wasn\u2019t going to live. One of the most profound stories, I think, we\u2019ve ever told here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> was told by Dr. Jerry Sittser who is a professor at Whitworth University who was on a road trip with his four children, his wife, and his mom to minister to Native Americans\u2014and on his way home, there was a tragic accident. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry: <\/strong>On a lonely stretch of highway, I noticed a car coming on at a really rapid rate of speed. Without any warning, he just drove right into me at 85 miles an hour. In fact, it was so head-on that his car cartwheeled over ours. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it was\u2014it was awful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the wake of that accident, as soon as I could collect myself, I looked around and knew that it was really bad. My mother who was sitting way in the back was seriously injured; and I could tell Lynda, my wife, was catastrophically injured, too. My four year old\u2014I could tell was dead. She was\u2014it had broken her neck. I tried to get a pulse, did mouth-to-mouth, but it was hopeless. My other kids were dazed, crying, screaming\u2014it was just chaotic. All the windows were broken on the car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got the kids out who were mobile and then went back to try to attend to Lynda. I got a pulse but knew she wasn\u2019t going to live. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer injuries were just too severe. As I said, I did mouth-to-mouth on Diana Jane on the ground\u2014but she was gone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, something really beautiful happened. You know you find these flowers in the midst of ashes almost right away. Some guy got out of the car and went over to my mother and reached out to her through the broken window and held her hand and stroked her arm until she died. That is a beautiful act of grace to me. It was very courageous of him in the midst of that chaos and that violence to breakthrough that with love and mercy. I wish I knew who that man was. I\u2019d like to thank him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAfter about an hour, Catherine, David, John, and I were all put in the same emergency vehicle and then were transported another hour up to Coeur d'Alene for emergency care. That one hour was probably the most significant hour I\u2019ve ever had in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt really was a turning point for me. It was like a wormhole from one reality to another. Honestly, that is the most accurate way I could describe it. Time ceased to have meaning. It could have been ten years. That is frozen in my memory\u2014that period of time. It was probably the most rational moment I\u2019ve ever had in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was quiet. John was sedated. The other kids were whimpering, but it was quiet. The emergency personnel didn\u2019t say anything, and I had one hour to just be. I thought about the accident. I thought about the scene. I knew what had happened, and I thought about what would be as a result. I considered the task set before me. I really was\u2014I was\u2014I had a burden that was placed on my shoulders and\u2014in a sense\u2014a divine mandate that said, \u201cYou draw a line in the sand right now and decide what you want to be\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cand what you want to come from this experience.\u201d And I did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cI want the bleeding to stop right here. This is it. I don\u2019t want to do things that are going to set in motion more and more pain and more and more bleeding that could go on for generations.\u201d I made the basic decision right there and then that I was going to somehow\u2014by the grace of God\u2014respond and live this story out in a way that was going to be redemptive. And redemption was really the key term that just kept coming back to me\u2014redemption. This is not the final word. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, again, that\u2019s Dr. Jerry Sittser sharing with us about the tragedy in his life and his family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know as he was talking, I was just thinking again of the quote, \u201cThe doors of opportunity swing on the little hinges of obedience.\u201d What Jerry Sittser chose to do in that moment was believe\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that God is the God of Redemption, and He was going to use it for His purposes, His glory. It didn\u2019t mean it would be easy, but it did mean that there was a bigger story taking place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have to believe, right now, we\u2019re talking to listeners who are in the middle of their own story and may need to be reminded that God is the God of Redemption. Will you trust Him? Will you obey with what He asks you to do? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>One of the people we had an opportunity to visit with was the widow of Todd Beamer\u2014his wife, Lisa. Todd was onboard Flight 93\u2014the flight that did not make its target\u2014the flight that went down in a field in Pennsylvania. Todd had called and talked to an operator and asked her to relay a message to his wife. Then, he had marshalled his fellow passengers together and they stormed the cockpit. Everybody knew that it was Todd Beamer who had said, \u201cLet\u2019s roll.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe talked with Lisa Beamer as she shared her reflections on that day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>I saw the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania, and when I saw that flight, I got a bad feeling just because I knew that that was the direction his plane would have been travelling. The time was about right from when I thought his flight would have taken off. A few minutes later, they came back on and said it was a Newark to San Francisco United flight. When they said that, I instantly knew that that was his flight. So, it was at that moment on TV, that I knew the fate of Todd\u2014and I had an instant picture of what our family was facing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>One of the things Lisa\u2014that you wrote about in your book that I smiled as I read about it and I wept\u2014were the gifts that people sent you after this occurred. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Throughout the fall, I transformed the dining room\u2014or the dining room was transformed into\u2014an assortment of things that had been sent from people across America\u2014literally across the world\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014mementos of Flight 93, hats, mugs, \u201cLet\u2019s Roll\u201d-this and \u201cLet\u2019s Roll\u201d-that. [Laughter]\u00a0 People really attached themselves to that phrase. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Of course, we know that phrase because of the phone call that Todd was able to make. When were you aware\u2014how did you find out that that call had been made? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>It was the Friday after September 11<sup>th<\/sup>. So, I guess it was the 15<sup>th<\/sup>. United Airlines called me and let me know that there had been a phone call made, and that the FBI had cleared the information in the phone call that I was able to receive it at that point. He gave me the number of Lisa Jefferson who was the operator who Todd spoke to from the air phone, and I was able to speak with her on Saturday morning and get her feelings and thoughts about what they had talked about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a blessing to get that. I never expected to have any more information or knowledge of what had happened to Todd in those last minutes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf anything could be great at that point\u2014that was great. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When she told you that the two of them had said The Lord\u2019s Prayer together, that he\u2019d recited Psalm 23, and that what she\u2019d heard at the end was that phrase, \u201cLet\u2019s roll,\u201d it had to be part of you just smiling knowing that\u2019s Todd\u2014and another part of you missing him at the same time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. You know since I have those days of not knowing what had happened\u2014we had a lot of people saying, \u201cDid you get a phone call? Did you hear from Todd? What happened?\u201d All I could say is \u201cI don\u2019t know what happened. I\u2019m not\u2014I don\u2019t think we\u2019ll ever know, but I do know that Todd\u2014his faith kept him strong and courageous and focused until the end. I know that he was going to do anything he could do to come home to us\u2014and I know that we were at the forefront of his mind.\u201d <br><br>When I got the details of the phone call, it confirmed all those elements that had\u2014obviously, it was his faith that was holding him steady. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe actions that he took in those last 15 minutes were just a tribute to a person that he was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>On occasion, as you just in your mind play through things like this, I\u2019ve thought, \u201cOne of the hardest things that I would think of experiencing, if I were in your shoes, would be that day when David come to you\u2014or climb up in your lap\u2014and just say, \u2018I miss Daddy;\u2019 and it would just touch something right inside of you saying, \u2018I miss Daddy too.\u2019\u201d I\u2019m sure the two of you have just wept together over that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes, especially as David gets a little older, he\u2019s starting to internalize it more and realize all the things that Todd\u2019s not going to be here for. He was at swimming lessons recently, and we were driving home, and he was quiet. Then, he just said, \u201cI wish Daddy could be here at my swimming lessons.\u201d I said, \u201cI do too, David.\u201d Those are the hardest times, definitely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know I didn\u2019t know how God was going to use that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014for a bigger perspective on faith and how it really looks when it\u2019s put into action every day. In the case of Todd, that\u2019s how it started out. I didn\u2019t know that from there He was also going to be using me and my story from here on out\u2014and I certainly don\u2019t know what He has for the future\u2014but if I\u2019ve learned anything since September 11<sup>th<\/sup>, it\u2019s just really that what we\u2019re called to do is live on faith moment by moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe way I live my life, usually, is to kind of have things orchestrated and planned; but there is nothing about the events of the last year that I know anything about or that I can prepare for or anticipate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve really been impressed all the more that when we just sit back and say, \u201cGod, I\u2019m Your vessel. Use me. I\u2019m here to really obey and to share what You have me to share with whoever I\u2019m going to bump shoulders with today,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s a really peaceful life. I\u2014quite frankly\u2014haven\u2019t had more peace\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014in my heart and in my soul in the last year than I\u2019ve ever had in my whole life because I have a much stronger sense that\u2014really\u2014God is in control. And when we fall in line with His plans\u2014that\u2019s the best place to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Again, we\u2019ve been listening to Lisa Beamer reflecting on the events of 9\/11 and the death of her husband, Todd. We often think to ourselves, \u201cI don\u2019t know how I would handle something like that.\u201d Lisa reminds us\u2014in the moment\u2014God gives grace for us to walk by faith; doesn\u2019t He? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He does. He also promises us in Romans, chapter 5, that suffering can produce endurance. If we allow God to do His work in our souls, endurance produces character\u2014and ultimately\u2014character produces hope. That\u2019s what we heard in her voice\u2014a suffering that was unthinkable\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that had been processed by her\u2014I\u2019m sure\u2014not perfectly. Nonetheless, she talked about her faith growing through this trial\u2014through this deep, dark valley. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There is one other widow we want to hear from today. Gracia Burnham and her husband Martin were missionaries in the Philippines when they were kidnapped by a terrorist group\u2014and ultimately, it was their rescue\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014that led to Martin\u2019s death. Gracia reflected on her last day with her husband. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Audio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gracia: <\/strong>We were looking for the elusive village\u2014the village where there was\u2014the second ransom was there\u2014they were going to turn us over to civilians, and this was all going to going to be over\u2014but we were actually kind of lost. Our guide didn\u2019t exactly know where we were. One night we were going to cross a logging road to get to this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014village that we thought was over there\u2014and I said to my guard, \u201cCould you go tell them not to cross this road? I don\u2019t have a good feeling about this. Someone is going to see our tracks and follow us.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, they didn\u2019t pay any attention to me\u2014and as the sun went down, when no one could see us, we crossed the road, hiked all night. But there were three kind of rules with this war. One was we never fought in the rain, we never fought after dark, and they never pursued us. We would have our gun battle. Then, we would go our way\u2014and they would go theirs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, it cloudy up to rain that day. So, we put our hammocks up, we put our little plastic shelters over the hammocks to keep the rain off, and we laid down for a rest. We didn\u2019t know that that morning they\u2019d seen our footprints and had been following us all day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe soldiers came over the hill and opened fire on our camp. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I knew what to do right away\u2014I dropped\u2014but even before I got to the ground, I\u2019d been shot in the leg. There was enough rain already that I kind of just slid down the hill and came to rest beside Martin. I looked over at him, and he was bleeding from his chest\u2014I knew from experience that leg wounds heal\u2014but chest wounds don\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You didn\u2019t have any words with him then. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gracia: <\/strong>No, I didn\u2019t say anything to him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The two of you had had a conversation\u2014what?\u2014the night before as you\u2019d gone to sleep. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gracia: <\/strong>No, just minutes before\u2014when we were sitting down in our hammock to have our rest, Martin had said to me, \u201cGracia, I don\u2019t know why this has happened to us but Psalm 100 has been\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cjust running through my head all day, especially the verse that says, \u2018Serve the Lord with gladness.\u2019\u201d He said, \u201cThis may not seem like serving the Lord, but let\u2019s just choose to serve Him with gladness.\u201d Those are the last words he ever said\u2014well, we prayed together and laid down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I didn\u2019t hear the languages of the Abu Sayyaf coming from the river, I started moving my hands just very slowly so someone would know I was alive. I didn\u2019t want them to be startled and shoot me. Some soldiers saw me right away and came down the hill and started dragging me up to the ridge. As they drug me up the hill, I looked back at Martin; and he was white\u2014and that\u2019s when I knew he was dead. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know the Lord gave me real grace right then. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had been praying that we would get out of there\u2014and to be quite honest, we didn\u2019t care how anymore\u2014we had just had it. And right in that moment, I thought, \u201cThis is God\u2019s answer. Martin\u2019s with Him, and they\u2019re going to take care of me.\u201d I just had a real peace\u2014and you know what? That peace has never left me. I have a real peace in my heart that \u201cThis is God\u2019s plan. It is not how I would have planned it\u2014but you know what? God is God\u2014and I\u2019m not the one that does the choosing. He\u2019s the one that does the choosing\u2014and I trust Him\u2014and I trust that He is good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Again, that\u2019s Gracia Burnham talking about the death of her husband and the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014faith that God has given her to walk through the valley of the shadow of death and to cling to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ve been spending a lot of time in recent weeks in the Psalms. It is amazing how many times the psalmist moves from wondering where God is\u2014why God\u2019s silent\u2014and then how the psalmist moves to finding God as his refuge\u2014his source of strength\u2014just as Gracia so eloquently took us into a spot that is unimaginable and yet demonstrates such a real faith\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014in such an ordeal. I just want to encourage a listener\u2014regardless of where you are in the journey\u2014what you\u2019re facing\u2014what you\u2019ve been through\u2014it may have lasted longer than a year. Let God be your refuge\u2014turn to Him\u2014get in the Book\u2014start reading the Psalms, and cry out to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is no reason to be ashamed. One of the most profound stories, I think, we\u2019ve ever told here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> was told by Dr. Jerry Sittser who is a professor at Whitworth University who was on a road trip with his four children, his wife, and his mom to minister to Native Americans\u2014and on his way home, there was a tragic accident. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry: <\/strong>On a lonely stretch of highway, I noticed a car coming on at a really rapid rate of speed. Without any warning, he just drove right into me at 85 miles an hour. In fact, it was so head-on that his car cartwheeled over ours. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it was\u2014it was awful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the wake of that accident, as soon as I could collect myself, I looked around and knew that it was really bad. My mother who was sitting way in the back was seriously injured; and I could tell Lynda, my wife, was catastrophically injured, too. My four year old\u2014I could tell was dead. She was\u2014it had broken her neck. I tried to get a pulse, did mouth-to-mouth, but it was hopeless. My other kids were dazed, crying, screaming\u2014it was just chaotic. All the windows were broken on the car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got the kids out who were mobile and then went back to try to attend to Lynda. I got a pulse but knew she wasn\u2019t going to live. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer injuries were just too severe. As I said, I did mouth-to-mouth on Diana Jane on the ground\u2014but she was gone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, something really beautiful happened. You know you find these flowers in the midst of ashes almost right away. Some guy got out of the car and went over to my mother and reached out to her through the broken window and held her hand and stroked her arm until she died. That is a beautiful act of grace to me. It was very courageous of him in the midst of that chaos and that violence to breakthrough that with love and mercy. I wish I knew who that man was. I\u2019d like to thank him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAfter about an hour, Catherine, David, John, and I were all put in the same emergency vehicle and then were transported another hour up to Coeur d'Alene for emergency care. That one hour was probably the most significant hour I\u2019ve ever had in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt really was a turning point for me. It was like a wormhole from one reality to another. Honestly, that is the most accurate way I could describe it. Time ceased to have meaning. It could have been ten years. That is frozen in my memory\u2014that period of time. It was probably the most rational moment I\u2019ve ever had in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was quiet. John was sedated. The other kids were whimpering, but it was quiet. The emergency personnel didn\u2019t say anything, and I had one hour to just be. I thought about the accident. I thought about the scene. I knew what had happened, and I thought about what would be as a result. I considered the task set before me. I really was\u2014I was\u2014I had a burden that was placed on my shoulders and\u2014in a sense\u2014a divine mandate that said, \u201cYou draw a line in the sand right now and decide what you want to be\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cand what you want to come from this experience.\u201d And I did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cI want the bleeding to stop right here. This is it. I don\u2019t want to do things that are going to set in motion more and more pain and more and more bleeding that could go on for generations.\u201d I made the basic decision right there and then that I was going to somehow\u2014by the grace of God\u2014respond and live this story out in a way that was going to be redemptive. And redemption was really the key term that just kept coming back to me\u2014redemption. This is not the final word. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, again, that\u2019s Dr. Jerry Sittser sharing with us about the tragedy in his life and his family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know as he was talking, I was just thinking again of the quote, \u201cThe doors of opportunity swing on the little hinges of obedience.\u201d What Jerry Sittser chose to do in that moment was believe\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that God is the God of Redemption, and He was going to use it for His purposes, His glory. It didn\u2019t mean it would be easy, but it did mean that there was a bigger story taking place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have to believe, right now, we\u2019re talking to listeners who are in the middle of their own story and may need to be reminded that God is the God of Redemption. Will you trust Him? Will you obey with what He asks you to do? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>One of the people we had an opportunity to visit with was the widow of Todd Beamer\u2014his wife, Lisa. Todd was onboard Flight 93\u2014the flight that did not make its target\u2014the flight that went down in a field in Pennsylvania. Todd had called and talked to an operator and asked her to relay a message to his wife. Then, he had marshalled his fellow passengers together and they stormed the cockpit. Everybody knew that it was Todd Beamer who had said, \u201cLet\u2019s roll.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe talked with Lisa Beamer as she shared her reflections on that day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>I saw the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania, and when I saw that flight, I got a bad feeling just because I knew that that was the direction his plane would have been travelling. The time was about right from when I thought his flight would have taken off. A few minutes later, they came back on and said it was a Newark to San Francisco United flight. When they said that, I instantly knew that that was his flight. So, it was at that moment on TV, that I knew the fate of Todd\u2014and I had an instant picture of what our family was facing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>One of the things Lisa\u2014that you wrote about in your book that I smiled as I read about it and I wept\u2014were the gifts that people sent you after this occurred. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Throughout the fall, I transformed the dining room\u2014or the dining room was transformed into\u2014an assortment of things that had been sent from people across America\u2014literally across the world\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014mementos of Flight 93, hats, mugs, \u201cLet\u2019s Roll\u201d-this and \u201cLet\u2019s Roll\u201d-that. [Laughter]\u00a0 People really attached themselves to that phrase. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Of course, we know that phrase because of the phone call that Todd was able to make. When were you aware\u2014how did you find out that that call had been made? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>It was the Friday after September 11<sup>th<\/sup>. So, I guess it was the 15<sup>th<\/sup>. United Airlines called me and let me know that there had been a phone call made, and that the FBI had cleared the information in the phone call that I was able to receive it at that point. He gave me the number of Lisa Jefferson who was the operator who Todd spoke to from the air phone, and I was able to speak with her on Saturday morning and get her feelings and thoughts about what they had talked about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a blessing to get that. I never expected to have any more information or knowledge of what had happened to Todd in those last minutes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf anything could be great at that point\u2014that was great. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When she told you that the two of them had said The Lord\u2019s Prayer together, that he\u2019d recited Psalm 23, and that what she\u2019d heard at the end was that phrase, \u201cLet\u2019s roll,\u201d it had to be part of you just smiling knowing that\u2019s Todd\u2014and another part of you missing him at the same time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. You know since I have those days of not knowing what had happened\u2014we had a lot of people saying, \u201cDid you get a phone call? Did you hear from Todd? What happened?\u201d All I could say is \u201cI don\u2019t know what happened. I\u2019m not\u2014I don\u2019t think we\u2019ll ever know, but I do know that Todd\u2014his faith kept him strong and courageous and focused until the end. I know that he was going to do anything he could do to come home to us\u2014and I know that we were at the forefront of his mind.\u201d <br><br>When I got the details of the phone call, it confirmed all those elements that had\u2014obviously, it was his faith that was holding him steady. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe actions that he took in those last 15 minutes were just a tribute to a person that he was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>On occasion, as you just in your mind play through things like this, I\u2019ve thought, \u201cOne of the hardest things that I would think of experiencing, if I were in your shoes, would be that day when David come to you\u2014or climb up in your lap\u2014and just say, \u2018I miss Daddy;\u2019 and it would just touch something right inside of you saying, \u2018I miss Daddy too.\u2019\u201d I\u2019m sure the two of you have just wept together over that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes, especially as David gets a little older, he\u2019s starting to internalize it more and realize all the things that Todd\u2019s not going to be here for. He was at swimming lessons recently, and we were driving home, and he was quiet. Then, he just said, \u201cI wish Daddy could be here at my swimming lessons.\u201d I said, \u201cI do too, David.\u201d Those are the hardest times, definitely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know I didn\u2019t know how God was going to use that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014for a bigger perspective on faith and how it really looks when it\u2019s put into action every day. In the case of Todd, that\u2019s how it started out. I didn\u2019t know that from there He was also going to be using me and my story from here on out\u2014and I certainly don\u2019t know what He has for the future\u2014but if I\u2019ve learned anything since September 11<sup>th<\/sup>, it\u2019s just really that what we\u2019re called to do is live on faith moment by moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe way I live my life, usually, is to kind of have things orchestrated and planned; but there is nothing about the events of the last year that I know anything about or that I can prepare for or anticipate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve really been impressed all the more that when we just sit back and say, \u201cGod, I\u2019m Your vessel. Use me. I\u2019m here to really obey and to share what You have me to share with whoever I\u2019m going to bump shoulders with today,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s a really peaceful life. I\u2014quite frankly\u2014haven\u2019t had more peace\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014in my heart and in my soul in the last year than I\u2019ve ever had in my whole life because I have a much stronger sense that\u2014really\u2014God is in control. And when we fall in line with His plans\u2014that\u2019s the best place to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Again, we\u2019ve been listening to Lisa Beamer reflecting on the events of 9\/11 and the death of her husband, Todd. We often think to ourselves, \u201cI don\u2019t know how I would handle something like that.\u201d Lisa reminds us\u2014in the moment\u2014God gives grace for us to walk by faith; doesn\u2019t He? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He does. He also promises us in Romans, chapter 5, that suffering can produce endurance. If we allow God to do His work in our souls, endurance produces character\u2014and ultimately\u2014character produces hope. That\u2019s what we heard in her voice\u2014a suffering that was unthinkable\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that had been processed by her\u2014I\u2019m sure\u2014not perfectly. Nonetheless, she talked about her faith growing through this trial\u2014through this deep, dark valley. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There is one other widow we want to hear from today. Gracia Burnham and her husband Martin were missionaries in the Philippines when they were kidnapped by a terrorist group\u2014and ultimately, it was their rescue\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014that led to Martin\u2019s death. Gracia reflected on her last day with her husband. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Audio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gracia: <\/strong>We were looking for the elusive village\u2014the village where there was\u2014the second ransom was there\u2014they were going to turn us over to civilians, and this was all going to going to be over\u2014but we were actually kind of lost. Our guide didn\u2019t exactly know where we were. One night we were going to cross a logging road to get to this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014village that we thought was over there\u2014and I said to my guard, \u201cCould you go tell them not to cross this road? I don\u2019t have a good feeling about this. Someone is going to see our tracks and follow us.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, they didn\u2019t pay any attention to me\u2014and as the sun went down, when no one could see us, we crossed the road, hiked all night. But there were three kind of rules with this war. One was we never fought in the rain, we never fought after dark, and they never pursued us. We would have our gun battle. Then, we would go our way\u2014and they would go theirs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, it cloudy up to rain that day. So, we put our hammocks up, we put our little plastic shelters over the hammocks to keep the rain off, and we laid down for a rest. We didn\u2019t know that that morning they\u2019d seen our footprints and had been following us all day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe soldiers came over the hill and opened fire on our camp. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I knew what to do right away\u2014I dropped\u2014but even before I got to the ground, I\u2019d been shot in the leg. There was enough rain already that I kind of just slid down the hill and came to rest beside Martin. I looked over at him, and he was bleeding from his chest\u2014I knew from experience that leg wounds heal\u2014but chest wounds don\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You didn\u2019t have any words with him then. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gracia: <\/strong>No, I didn\u2019t say anything to him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The two of you had had a conversation\u2014what?\u2014the night before as you\u2019d gone to sleep. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gracia: <\/strong>No, just minutes before\u2014when we were sitting down in our hammock to have our rest, Martin had said to me, \u201cGracia, I don\u2019t know why this has happened to us but Psalm 100 has been\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cjust running through my head all day, especially the verse that says, \u2018Serve the Lord with gladness.\u2019\u201d He said, \u201cThis may not seem like serving the Lord, but let\u2019s just choose to serve Him with gladness.\u201d Those are the last words he ever said\u2014well, we prayed together and laid down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I didn\u2019t hear the languages of the Abu Sayyaf coming from the river, I started moving my hands just very slowly so someone would know I was alive. I didn\u2019t want them to be startled and shoot me. Some soldiers saw me right away and came down the hill and started dragging me up to the ridge. As they drug me up the hill, I looked back at Martin; and he was white\u2014and that\u2019s when I knew he was dead. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know the Lord gave me real grace right then. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had been praying that we would get out of there\u2014and to be quite honest, we didn\u2019t care how anymore\u2014we had just had it. And right in that moment, I thought, \u201cThis is God\u2019s answer. Martin\u2019s with Him, and they\u2019re going to take care of me.\u201d I just had a real peace\u2014and you know what? That peace has never left me. I have a real peace in my heart that \u201cThis is God\u2019s plan. It is not how I would have planned it\u2014but you know what? God is God\u2014and I\u2019m not the one that does the choosing. He\u2019s the one that does the choosing\u2014and I trust Him\u2014and I trust that He is good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Again, that\u2019s Gracia Burnham talking about the death of her husband and the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014faith that God has given her to walk through the valley of the shadow of death and to cling to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ve been spending a lot of time in recent weeks in the Psalms. It is amazing how many times the psalmist moves from wondering where God is\u2014why God\u2019s silent\u2014and then how the psalmist moves to finding God as his refuge\u2014his source of strength\u2014just as Gracia so eloquently took us into a spot that is unimaginable and yet demonstrates such a real faith\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014in such an ordeal.
