You hear him chuckling in the background.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s not the voice of Elvis, folks\u2014that\u2019s my friend and co-host here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, Bob Lepine. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, there were some news recently in your life that really has put a cramp in your style\u2014it\u2019s going to further alter your style\u2014that really is the source of what we want to talk about today. What is that news, and what do we want to talk about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, that news has to do with college tuition in the year 2010 and how much it\u2019s going to cost and who we\u2019re going to be sending at that point. Let me tell you how this all came about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes\u2014do that why don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We became suspicious a few months ago that Mary Ann might\u2014in fact\u2014be pregnant. Now, we did what every American couple does when you are suspicious of such a thing\u2014we went straight to the Walmart and bought one of those eight-dollar\u2014 nine-dollar tests that is going to confirm it for you one way or another. We were on a Wednesday night shopping trip, and she had the pregnancy test there in her purse, and we went into the next store, and I said, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you just go into the ladies\u2019 room here and let\u2019s get this thing over with? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI mean, why wait until we get home? Let\u2019s solve it once and for all.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You didn\u2019t really do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We really did! I went and browsed through the book section while Mary Ann went into the ladies\u2019 room, and I just waited for her come out and either confirm or deny our suspicions. She motioned to me as she came out of the ladies\u2019 room and said, \u201cCome here, honey.\u201d She showed me the instructions and said, \u201cSee, there will be a red stripe in this line if in fact I\u2019m pregnant.\u201d I said, \u201cYes.\u201d And then she showed me the test, and there was the red stripe right there in that line. And the news was hatched that baby Lepine\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014number five.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014number five\u2014will be born sometime in August of 1994.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, I want you to help dads with just a couple of application points to really move toward fatherhood expectantly and believing God to use us in his life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I would encourage couples to wrestle with the kinds of issues we\u2019ve been talking about before the happy day arrives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you can\u2014do it before you find out you\u2019re pregnant\u2014but if you\u2019ve found out your pregnant, wrestle with them now, because you\u2019re going to be taxed to the limit on issues like selfishness and how you\u2019re going to deal with materialism. I\u2019d encourage dads\u2014and again\u2014dads ought to be the leaders in this area. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey ought to be the instigators and the pro-visionaries who say to their wives, \u201cHoney, let\u2019s go out this Friday night and let\u2019s sit down and let\u2019s talk through issues about, \u201cHow do we feel about children? How many do we think we want? What was it like when you were growing up? What were the good memories? What did you learn from your childhood that you want to replicate with our kids? What did you learn from your parents or from observing other parents that you want to try to make sure we don\u2019t replicate in the lives of our kids?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStart developing a strategy\u2014a mindset\u2014an orientation\u2014toward, \u201cHow will we be as parents?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo it as far ahead of the curve as you can, and it is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay, okay, okay. Details, details!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I mentioned a resource on the program today\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know\u2014listening to that, Dennis, here\u2019s what\u2019s interesting\u2014I\u2019ve spend the last year working on a video series that\u2019ll be coming out here in a few months on the <em>Art of Parenting<\/em>\u2122, and it\u2019s all about the need for parents to be purposeful and intentional as they raise the next generation, because too many of us as moms and dads\u2014we\u2019re not thinking long-term, we\u2019re just thinking, \u201cHow do I get through this day\u2014or this week?\u201d rather than thinking, \u201cWhat\u2019s the end product I\u2019m aiming for, and how do I be intentional in raising my child in that direction?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Parenting is not <em>a la carte<\/em>\u2014it is having an overall plan and knowing where you\u2019re headed. The <em>Art of Parenting<\/em> is going to give you that. We believe couples need help in four areas: helping their child discover his or her identity, helping them develop relationships, their character\u2014and finally, their mission. If you get those four things in proper balance and keep them in front of you, your children are going to benefit\u2014especially if your playbook\u2014if the blueprints that you\u2019re speaking from\u2014are the Scriptures.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You and Barbara are writing a book on this right now. The video series comes out this year, and we\u2019re hoping to impact millions of parents around the world with a strategy for how to raise the next generation. So again, we\u2019ll tell you more about that in the months to come on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had the opportunity a few years after we recorded that to write a book called <em>The Christian Husband<\/em>. When that book came out, you interviewed me for a couple of days on a husband\u2019s responsibility in a marriage relationship\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and one of the things we talked about was what it means for a husband to love his wife the way Christ loves the church. What does that love look like in practical terms? Here\u2019s how we addressed that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The writer Ray Lauren said, \u201cWhat good is patience and kindness,\u201d \u2014the things that 1 Corinthians 13 has been talking about\u2014\u201cwhat good is generosity, humility, courtesy, unselfishness, good-nature, charitableness, sincerity\u2014all of these qualities, what good are they unless they continue?\u201d Most of us can be kind of a day, but love is kindness that endures.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Most of us can be patient for a while, but love is patience that endures. When the Bible says, \u201cLove bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things,\u201d it says love goes the distance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s really what the preacher tried to say when he said the vows. He said, \u201cAre you in this for sickness or for health? Are you in this for better or for worse? Are you in this for richer or for poorer? Are you going the distance on this? Will your love continue in the face of adversity?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what I think Paul\u2019s summing it up with. He\u2019s saying real love doesn\u2019t change when the circumstances around it change\u2014real love stays with it, even when the circumstances are fighting against that feeling, are fighting against the flesh. Real love bears, believes, hopes, and endures\u2014and that\u2019s what a husband has to do. He has to endure. His wife needs him to provide that kind of commitment, stability, and certainty in their marriage that says, \u201cI\u2019m going to love you no matter what you do\u2014no matter what the circumstances are. I\u2019m here for you\u2014and for us\u2014for good.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s Bob Lepine talking about his book, <em>The Christian Husband<\/em>. I\u2019m listening to you, Bob, and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYou know what?\u201d Those words were practical\u2014they were wise\u2014and they were stout back in 1999. They\u2019re still relevant today\u2014and that book is relevant as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, if what you\u2019re talking about is anchored in Scripture, then\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014it\u2019s going to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014it\u2019s going to be relevant a hundred years from now\u2014a thousand years from now\u2014because the Word of God is living and active. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the Word endures forever. That\u2019s been one of the things here at <em>FamilyLife<\/em> that we\u2019ve tried to make sure we\u2019re doing\u2014pointing people to something that is transcendent\u2014that\u2019s not culturally relevant\u2014but something that\u2019s eternally relevant. Now listen to me\u2014some of you, I know, are wondering, \u201cDr. Love, where did you get your wisdom on romance?\u201d Everything I learned on romance I learned from pop songs in the \u201960s and the \u201970s. It starts with, \u201cThe first time ever I saw your face,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re just too good to be true\u2014I can\u2019t take my eyes off of you,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re the woman that I\u2019ve always dreamed of\u2014I knew it from the start\u2014I saw your face and that\u2019s the last I\u2019ve seen of my heart.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBless my soul, what\u2019s wrong with me?\u2014I\u2019m itching like a man on a fuzzy tree.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter] \u201cMy friends say I\u2019m acting wild as a bug\u2014I\u2019m in love, I\u2019m all shook up. Hey, hey, hey.\u201d [Laughter] \u201cWhy do birds suddenly appear\u2014Every time you\u2019re near?\u201d \u201cSomething tells me I\u2019m into something good. Could it be I\u2019m falling in love?\u201d \u201cYou see this guy, this guy\u2019s in love with you. And it\u2019s more than a feeling, you\u2019re more than a woman\u2014I love you more than I can say. Whoa, whoa, hey, hey.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, \u201cYou can\u2019t hurry love, you just have to wait\u2014And I\u2019m talking about moving in and I don\u2019t want to change your life\u2014But there\u2019s a warm wind blowing, the stars are out\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019d really love to see you tonight. She loves you, yes, yes, yes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cOh baby, I love your way\u2014I want to be with you night and day. You asked me if there\u2019ll come a time\u2014When I grow tired of you; never, my love. I can see me loving nobody but you\u2014For all my life. We\u2019re going to the chapel and we\u2019re going to get married\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGoing to the\u2014\u201d What? \u201c\u2014Chapel of love.\u201d \u201cWe\u2019ve only just begun to live\u2014Always and forever, babe. I got you, babe\u2014\u201d Yes, you\u2019ve got it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cEvery day with you, girl\u2014Is sweeter than the day before; I love you more today than yesterday\u2014But not as much as tomorrow. Love will keep us together.\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t go changing to try to please me\u2014I love you just the way you are.\u201d \u201cMaybe if I make you mad with something\u2014I might have said please; Forget the past, the future looks bright ahead. Don\u2019t be cruel.\u201d \u201cYou have to change you evil ways, baby\u2014\" [Laughter] \u201cBefore I stop loving you. You\u2019re nothing but a hound dog.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNo, let\u2019s hang onto what we\u2019ve got\u2014Don\u2019t let go, girl; We got a lot of love between us\u2014Hang on, hang on, hang on to what we\u2019ve got. Woo, woo, woo, woo.\u201d \u201cBaby, where did our love go? You don\u2019t bring me flowers\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201c\u2014You don\u2019t sing me love songs\u2014\u201c \u201cYou\u2019ve lost that loving feeling\u2014Now it\u2019s gone, gone, gone. Whoa, whoa, whoa.\u201d Yes, you\u2019ve got it! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m all out of love\u2014\u201c \u201cBye-bye, love\u2014Bye-bye, happiness\u2014Hello loneliness\u2014I think I\u2019m going to cry.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBreaking up is hard to do\u2014It\u2019s too late, baby\u2014No, it\u2019s too late\u2014But we really did try to make it.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m almost over you\u2014Alone again, naturally\u2014\u201c \u201cOne is the loneliest number\u2014That you\u2019ll ever do\u2014\u201c \u201cAnd I\u2019ll never fall in love again.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Dr. Love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, those song lyrics from the \u201960s and the \u201970s\u2014anymore, if I am speaking to a group\u2014I don\u2019t use that unless the group is people as old as me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>A little older. But you know what you\u2019re pointing out, Bob, is the culture sends certain messages about love and commitment and marriage. We need\u2014as never before\u2014the biblical blueprints\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and we need to hear what God has said about what real love is and how real love operates between two broken\u2014selfish\u2014and even sinful man and woman. How does that work in a marriage relationship?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There\u2019s a foundation to all of this that is essential. I had the opportunity to speak to our staff and to talk about the fact that we have to make sure that we are clear and accurate when we present the truth about the Gospel. If we\u2019re going to provide any real help for marriage or for parenting, we have to make sure that that help is anchored in what the Scripture teaches and in the message of the Gospel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI quoted at length from an article I read that has impacted me as much as anything that I\u2019ve ever read. This was actually written by J.I. Packer back in 1959. He wrote the preface for a re-release of a book from John Owen, called <em>The Death of Death in the Death of God<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that introduction J.I. Packer said the problem is that our message\u2014the Gospel message\u2014which is about God sending His Son to redeem and reconcile men, to bring them forgiveness of sin, and to give them new life. He said that message has fallen on hard times because\u2014instead of it being a God-centered message\u2014it has become a man-centered message. Instead of it being about Jesus, it\u2019s become about us, and that\u2019s where the problem is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cIf we go to the root of the matter, we shall find that these perplexities are ultimately due to our having lost our grip on the biblical Gospel.\u201d He said, \u201cWithout realizing it, we have\u2014during the past hundred years\u2014bartered the biblical Gospel for a substitute product, which although it looks similar enough in points of detail is, as a whole, a decidedly different thing.\u201d Hear what he\u2019s saying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Gospel that we\u2019re proclaiming, he said, is a substitute gospel\u2014it\u2019s not the biblical Gospel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe went on to explain. He said, \u201cThis new substitute and counterfeit gospel fails to make men God-centered in their thinking and God-fearing in their hearts.\u201d I love that phrase, because what the Gospel ought to do is make you God-centered in your thinking and God-fearing in your hearts. He said what we\u2019re preaching today as the gospel is not doing that, and I would suggest to you that when we stop and think about how we proclaim the Gospel, it\u2019s ultimately about that end: do we make people God-fearing in their hearts and God-centered in their thinking?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe goes on to say, \u201cOne way of stating the difference between the old Gospel and the new gospel is to say that the new gospel is too exclusively concerned with being helpful to men\u2014bringing them peace, comfort, happiness, and satisfaction\u2014and too little concerned with glorifying God.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said the message that we\u2019re preaching is too focused on man and his need and not focused enough on God and His glory. \u201cThe old Gospel,\u201d he says, \u201cwas helpful, too; more so, indeed, than the new, but its first concern was always to give glory to God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe goes on to say, \u201cIt was always and essentially a proclamation of divine sovereignty and mercy and judgment.\u201d \u201cThe old Gospel,\u201d he says, \u201cwas always about proclaiming first and foremost that here is a sovereign who shows divine mercy and judgment, and it was a summons to bow down and worship the mighty Lord on whom we depend for good, both in nature and grace.\u201d The center of its reference\u2014the old Gospel, when you talked about it\u2014the center of its reference was unambiguously God, but in the new gospel the center of the reference is unashamedly man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat he\u2019s saying is there\u2019s a difference between a man-centered gospel and a God-centered Gospel, and a man-centered gospel is no gospel at all\u2014it is deficient in its presentation\u2014it\u2019s a substitute or a counterfeit. And, as he says, a half-truth is really an untruth\u2014it\u2019s no truth at all. He said by being too focused on man, his need, his focus, and making him the center of the Gospel has been what has taken us off-course and caused a lack of evangelism\u2014a lack of holiness, all of the maladies in the church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe goes on to say, \u201cThe chief aim of the old Gospel was to teach people to worship God. The concern of the new gospel seems limited to making them feel better. The subject of the old Gospel was God and His ways with men\u2014the subject of the new gospel is man and the help God gives him.\u201d See the difference? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is a world of difference, he says\u2014the whole perspective and emphasis of the Gospel preaching has changed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cTo recover the old, authentic, biblical Gospel and to bring our preaching and practice back in line with it is perhaps the most pressing need of our day.\u201d That was Packer\u2019s conclusion, and I would say today the same is true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Again, hard to believe he wrote that in 1959, but it is the case again today\u2014that we\u2019ve lost our focus on the centrality of God and put man at the center of the universe, and that messes up your thinking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It does. We\u2019re calling people away from focusing on self and living life your way\u2014the way you want to live\u2014and challenging you to pick up a new way\u2014the way of the Scriptures. Jesus Christ called you and me to pick up our cross and follow Him and deny yourself and to fulfill His will for your life. It\u2019s all about making God the center of your life and thinking rightly about who He is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and that has been the foundation of what <em>FamilyLife<\/em> has been about for more than four decades now and\u2014as we head into the New Year\u2014that continues to be our foundation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, in order to move forward we need folks standing with us\u2014alongside us financially\u2014giving us the resources to be able to syndicate and produce and broadcast this program across the country, and to look to the new year and tackle some of the most important issues we could possibly take on, which is the <em>Art of Parenting<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe want to equip a generation of parents\u2014one million parents\u2014with the biblical blueprints of how to go about raising the next generation, and sending an arrow. You hear him chuckling in the background.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s not the voice of Elvis, folks\u2014that\u2019s my friend and co-host here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, Bob Lepine. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, there were some news recently in your life that really has put a cramp in your style\u2014it\u2019s going to further alter your style\u2014that really is the source of what we want to talk about today. What is that news, and what do we want to talk about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, that news has to do with college tuition in the year 2010 and how much it\u2019s going to cost and who we\u2019re going to be sending at that point. Let me tell you how this all came about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes\u2014do that why don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We became suspicious a few months ago that Mary Ann might\u2014in fact\u2014be pregnant. Now, we did what every American couple does when you are suspicious of such a thing\u2014we went straight to the Walmart and bought one of those eight-dollar\u2014 nine-dollar tests that is going to confirm it for you one way or another. We were on a Wednesday night shopping trip, and she had the pregnancy test there in her purse, and we went into the next store, and I said, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you just go into the ladies\u2019 room here and let\u2019s get this thing over with? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI mean, why wait until we get home? Let\u2019s solve it once and for all.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You didn\u2019t really do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We really did! I went and browsed through the book section while Mary Ann went into the ladies\u2019 room, and I just waited for her come out and either confirm or deny our suspicions. She motioned to me as she came out of the ladies\u2019 room and said, \u201cCome here, honey.\u201d She showed me the instructions and said, \u201cSee, there will be a red stripe in this line if in fact I\u2019m pregnant.\u201d I said, \u201cYes.\u201d And then she showed me the test, and there was the red stripe right there in that line. And the news was hatched that baby Lepine\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014number five.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014number five\u2014will be born sometime in August of 1994.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, I want you to help dads with just a couple of application points to really move toward fatherhood expectantly and believing God to use us in his life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I would encourage couples to wrestle with the kinds of issues we\u2019ve been talking about before the happy day arrives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you can\u2014do it before you find out you\u2019re pregnant\u2014but if you\u2019ve found out your pregnant, wrestle with them now, because you\u2019re going to be taxed to the limit on issues like selfishness and how you\u2019re going to deal with materialism. I\u2019d encourage dads\u2014and again\u2014dads ought to be the leaders in this area. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey ought to be the instigators and the pro-visionaries who say to their wives, \u201cHoney, let\u2019s go out this Friday night and let\u2019s sit down and let\u2019s talk through issues about, \u201cHow do we feel about children? How many do we think we want? What was it like when you were growing up? What were the good memories? What did you learn from your childhood that you want to replicate with our kids? What did you learn from your parents or from observing other parents that you want to try to make sure we don\u2019t replicate in the lives of our kids?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStart developing a strategy\u2014a mindset\u2014an orientation\u2014toward, \u201cHow will we be as parents?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo it as far ahead of the curve as you can, and it is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay, okay, okay. Details, details!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I mentioned a resource on the program today\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know\u2014listening to that, Dennis, here\u2019s what\u2019s interesting\u2014I\u2019ve spend the last year working on a video series that\u2019ll be coming out here in a few months on the <em>Art of Parenting<\/em>\u2122, and it\u2019s all about the need for parents to be purposeful and intentional as they raise the next generation, because too many of us as moms and dads\u2014we\u2019re not thinking long-term, we\u2019re just thinking, \u201cHow do I get through this day\u2014or this week?\u201d rather than thinking, \u201cWhat\u2019s the end product I\u2019m aiming for, and how do I be intentional in raising my child in that direction?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Parenting is not <em>a la carte<\/em>\u2014it is having an overall plan and knowing where you\u2019re headed. The <em>Art of Parenting<\/em> is going to give you that. We believe couples need help in four areas: helping their child discover his or her identity, helping them develop relationships, their character\u2014and finally, their mission. If you get those four things in proper balance and keep them in front of you, your children are going to benefit\u2014especially if your playbook\u2014if the blueprints that you\u2019re speaking from\u2014are the Scriptures.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You and Barbara are writing a book on this right now. The video series comes out this year, and we\u2019re hoping to impact millions of parents around the world with a strategy for how to raise the next generation. So again, we\u2019ll tell you more about that in the months to come on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had the opportunity a few years after we recorded that to write a book called <em>The Christian Husband<\/em>. When that book came out, you interviewed me for a couple of days on a husband\u2019s responsibility in a marriage relationship\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and one of the things we talked about was what it means for a husband to love his wife the way Christ loves the church. What does that love look like in practical terms? Here\u2019s how we addressed that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The writer Ray Lauren said, \u201cWhat good is patience and kindness,\u201d \u2014the things that 1 Corinthians 13 has been talking about\u2014\u201cwhat good is generosity, humility, courtesy, unselfishness, good-nature, charitableness, sincerity\u2014all of these qualities, what good are they unless they continue?\u201d Most of us can be kind of a day, but love is kindness that endures.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Most of us can be patient for a while, but love is patience that endures. When the Bible says, \u201cLove bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things,\u201d it says love goes the distance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s really what the preacher tried to say when he said the vows. He said, \u201cAre you in this for sickness or for health? Are you in this for better or for worse? Are you in this for richer or for poorer? Are you going the distance on this? Will your love continue in the face of adversity?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what I think Paul\u2019s summing it up with. He\u2019s saying real love doesn\u2019t change when the circumstances around it change\u2014real love stays with it, even when the circumstances are fighting against that feeling, are fighting against the flesh. Real love bears, believes, hopes, and endures\u2014and that\u2019s what a husband has to do. He has to endure. His wife needs him to provide that kind of commitment, stability, and certainty in their marriage that says, \u201cI\u2019m going to love you no matter what you do\u2014no matter what the circumstances are. I\u2019m here for you\u2014and for us\u2014for good.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s Bob Lepine talking about his book, <em>The Christian Husband<\/em>. I\u2019m listening to you, Bob, and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYou know what?\u201d Those words were practical\u2014they were wise\u2014and they were stout back in 1999. They\u2019re still relevant today\u2014and that book is relevant as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, if what you\u2019re talking about is anchored in Scripture, then\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014it\u2019s going to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014it\u2019s going to be relevant a hundred years from now\u2014a thousand years from now\u2014because the Word of God is living and active. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the Word endures forever. That\u2019s been one of the things here at <em>FamilyLife<\/em> that we\u2019ve tried to make sure we\u2019re doing\u2014pointing people to something that is transcendent\u2014that\u2019s not culturally relevant\u2014but something that\u2019s eternally relevant. I\u2019ve had people who have asked me, \u201cHow did you get so smart when it comes to marriage and family issues?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI actually explained that to our listeners when they joined us at an event that we hosted. I explained where all my wisdom on marriage and family came from.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m here tonight, ladies and gentleman, as Dr. Love\u2014to give you my prescription for how to deal with romance\u2014how to bring back the romance into your romance-tired blood. Now listen to me\u2014some of you, I know, are wondering, \u201cDr. Love, where did you get your wisdom on romance?\u201d Everything I learned on romance I learned from pop songs in the \u201960s and the \u201970s. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can chart the entire trajectory of a marriage relationship through pop songs from the \u201960s and the \u201970s. It starts with, \u201cThe first time ever I saw your face,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re just too good to be true\u2014I can\u2019t take my eyes off of you,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re the woman that I\u2019ve always dreamed of\u2014I knew it from the start\u2014I saw your face and that\u2019s the last I\u2019ve seen of my heart.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBless my soul, what\u2019s wrong with me?\u2014I\u2019m itching like a man on a fuzzy tree.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter] \u201cMy friends say I\u2019m acting wild as a bug\u2014I\u2019m in love, I\u2019m all shook up. Hey, hey, hey.\u201d [Laughter] \u201cWhy do birds suddenly appear\u2014Every time you\u2019re near?\u201d \u201cSomething tells me I\u2019m into something good. Could it be I\u2019m falling in love?\u201d \u201cYou see this guy, this guy\u2019s in love with you. And it\u2019s more than a feeling, you\u2019re more than a woman\u2014I love you more than I can say. Whoa, whoa, hey, hey.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, \u201cYou can\u2019t hurry love, you just have to wait\u2014And I\u2019m talking about moving in and I don\u2019t want to change your life\u2014But there\u2019s a warm wind blowing, the stars are out\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019d really love to see you tonight. She loves you, yes, yes, yes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cOh baby, I love your way\u2014I want to be with you night and day. You asked me if there\u2019ll come a time\u2014When I grow tired of you; never, my love. I can see me loving nobody but you\u2014For all my life. We\u2019re going to the chapel and we\u2019re going to get married\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGoing to the\u2014\u201d What? \u201c\u2014Chapel of love.\u201d \u201cWe\u2019ve only just begun to live\u2014Always and forever, babe. I got you, babe\u2014\u201d Yes, you\u2019ve got it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cEvery day with you, girl\u2014Is sweeter than the day before; I love you more today than yesterday\u2014But not as much as tomorrow. Love will keep us together.\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t go changing to try to please me\u2014I love you just the way you are.\u201d \u201cMaybe if I make you mad with something\u2014I might have said please; Forget the past, the future looks bright ahead. Don\u2019t be cruel.\u201d \u201cYou have to change you evil ways, baby\u2014\" [Laughter] \u201cBefore I stop loving you. You\u2019re nothing but a hound dog.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNo, let\u2019s hang onto what we\u2019ve got\u2014Don\u2019t let go, girl; We got a lot of love between us\u2014Hang on, hang on, hang on to what we\u2019ve got. Woo, woo, woo, woo.\u201d \u201cBaby, where did our love go? You don\u2019t bring me flowers\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201c\u2014You don\u2019t sing me love songs\u2014\u201c \u201cYou\u2019ve lost that loving feeling\u2014Now it\u2019s gone, gone, gone. Whoa, whoa, whoa.\u201d Yes, you\u2019ve got it! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m all out of love\u2014\u201c \u201cBye-bye, love\u2014Bye-bye, happiness\u2014Hello loneliness\u2014I think I\u2019m going to cry.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBreaking up is hard to do\u2014It\u2019s too late, baby\u2014No, it\u2019s too late\u2014But we really did try to make it.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m almost over you\u2014Alone again, naturally\u2014\u201c \u201cOne is the loneliest number\u2014That you\u2019ll ever do\u2014\u201c \u201cAnd I\u2019ll never fall in love again.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Dr. Love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, those song lyrics from the \u201960s and the \u201970s\u2014anymore, if I am speaking to a group\u2014I don\u2019t use that unless the group is people as old as me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>A little older. But you know what you\u2019re pointing out, Bob, is the culture sends certain messages about love and commitment and marriage. We need\u2014as never before\u2014the biblical blueprints\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and we need to hear what God has said about what real love is and how real love operates between two broken\u2014selfish\u2014and even sinful man and woman. How does that work in a marriage relationship?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There\u2019s a foundation to all of this that is essential. I had the opportunity to speak to our staff and to talk about the fact that we have to make sure that we are clear and accurate when we present the truth about the Gospel. If we\u2019re going to provide any real help for marriage or for parenting, we have to make sure that that help is anchored in what the Scripture teaches and in the message of the Gospel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI quoted at length from an article I read that has impacted me as much as anything that I\u2019ve ever read. This was actually written by J.I. Packer back in 1959. He wrote the preface for a re-release of a book from John Owen, called <em>The Death of Death in the Death of God<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that introduction J.I. Packer said the problem is that our message\u2014the Gospel message\u2014which is about God sending His Son to redeem and reconcile men, to bring them forgiveness of sin, and to give them new life. He said that message has fallen on hard times because\u2014instead of it being a God-centered message\u2014it has become a man-centered message. Instead of it being about Jesus, it\u2019s become about us, and that\u2019s where the problem is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cIf we go to the root of the matter, we shall find that these perplexities are ultimately due to our having lost our grip on the biblical Gospel.\u201d He said, \u201cWithout realizing it, we have\u2014during the past hundred years\u2014bartered the biblical Gospel for a substitute product, which although it looks similar enough in points of detail is, as a whole, a decidedly different thing.\u201d Hear what he\u2019s saying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Gospel that we\u2019re proclaiming, he said, is a substitute gospel\u2014it\u2019s not the biblical Gospel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe went on to explain. He said, \u201cThis new substitute and counterfeit gospel fails to make men God-centered in their thinking and God-fearing in their hearts.\u201d I love that phrase, because what the Gospel ought to do is make you God-centered in your thinking and God-fearing in your hearts. He said what we\u2019re preaching today as the gospel is not doing that, and I would suggest to you that when we stop and think about how we proclaim the Gospel, it\u2019s ultimately about that end: do we make people God-fearing in their hearts and God-centered in their thinking?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe goes on to say, \u201cOne way of stating the difference between the old Gospel and the new gospel is to say that the new gospel is too exclusively concerned with being helpful to men\u2014bringing them peace, comfort, happiness, and satisfaction\u2014and too little concerned with glorifying God.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said the message that we\u2019re preaching is too focused on man and his need and not focused enough on God and His glory. \u201cThe old Gospel,\u201d he says, \u201cwas helpful, too; more so, indeed, than the new, but its first concern was always to give glory to God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe goes on to say, \u201cIt was always and essentially a proclamation of divine sovereignty and mercy and judgment.\u201d \u201cThe old Gospel,\u201d he says, \u201cwas always about proclaiming first and foremost that here is a sovereign who shows divine mercy and judgment, and it was a summons to bow down and worship the mighty Lord on whom we depend for good, both in nature and grace.\u201d The center of its reference\u2014the old Gospel, when you talked about it\u2014the center of its reference was unambiguously God, but in the new gospel the center of the reference is unashamedly man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat he\u2019s saying is there\u2019s a difference between a man-centered gospel and a God-centered Gospel, and a man-centered gospel is no gospel at all\u2014it is deficient in its presentation\u2014it\u2019s a substitute or a counterfeit. And, as he says, a half-truth is really an untruth\u2014it\u2019s no truth at all. He said by being too focused on man, his need, his focus, and making him the center of the Gospel has been what has taken us off-course and caused a lack of evangelism\u2014a lack of holiness, all of the maladies in the church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe goes on to say, \u201cThe chief aim of the old Gospel was to teach people to worship God. The concern of the new gospel seems limited to making them feel better. The subject of the old Gospel was God and His ways with men\u2014the subject of the new gospel is man and the help God gives him.\u201d See the difference? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is a world of difference, he says\u2014the whole perspective and emphasis of the Gospel preaching has changed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cTo recover the old, authentic, biblical Gospel and to bring our preaching and practice back in line with it is perhaps the most pressing need of our day.\u201d That was Packer\u2019s conclusion, and I would say today the same is true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Again, hard to believe he wrote that in 1959, but it is the case again today\u2014that we\u2019ve lost our focus on the centrality of God and put man at the center of the universe, and that messes up your thinking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It does. We\u2019re calling people away from focusing on self and living life your way\u2014the way you want to live\u2014and challenging you to pick up a new way\u2014the way of the Scriptures. Jesus Christ called you and me to pick up our cross and follow Him and deny yourself and to fulfill His will for your life. It\u2019s all about making God the center of your life and thinking rightly about who He is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and that has been the foundation of what <em>FamilyLife<\/em> has been about for more than four decades now and\u2014as we head into the New Year\u2014that continues to be our foundation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, in order to move forward we need folks standing with us\u2014alongside us financially\u2014giving us the resources to be able to syndicate and produce and broadcast this program across the country, and to look to the new year and tackle some of the most important issues we could possibly take on, which is the <em>Art of Parenting<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe want to equip a generation of parents\u2014one million parents\u2014with the biblical blueprints of how to go about raising the next generation, and sending an arrow.
