Right after Will Franklin was born, I had a gallbladder attack; and I had it the night that he got on a bus to go to Texas to be Steven Curtis Chapman in a big concert in Texas. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Mr. Bigshot\u2014Mr. Steven Curtis Chapman!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>Well, if you\u2019ll remember\u2014the song, <em>I Will Be Here<\/em>, was on that record\u2014[Laughter]\u2014and he was <em>there<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, November 6<sup>th<\/sup>. Steven Curtis Chapman and his wife Mary Beth are just a few of the people who have joined us over the years to share with us their own insights on marriage and family. We\u2019ll hear some of those voices today. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Monday edition. Here it is\u2014it\u2019s birthday week! This week, we will celebrate our 25<sup>th<\/sup> birthday! We look a lot older than that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think we do; no doubt about it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, as I think back 25 years, Bob, one of my favorite memories is how we started. I mean, we couldn\u2019t afford a top studio, here, in town \/ we didn\u2019t have a studio\u2014so we had to rent it. We found a place\u2014you remember this. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was dirt cheap. It had egg cartons\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The egg cartons, burlap and lattice\u2014yes; it was well sound-proofed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh my goodness. But we named the place \u201cBethlehem,\u201d because we were hoping something <em>great<\/em> would happen out of something so humble. It\u2019s been quite a ride; and it has, indeed, been a privilege to come to you, as a listener, now for 25 years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to, at the outset, say, \u201cThank you,\u201d to two groups of people. First of all, \u201cThank you,\u201d for the listeners, who faithfully tune in\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I just ran into one; you did too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She\u2019s in your fan club, though, Bob. [Laughter] She didn\u2019t want to meet <em>me<\/em>; she wanted to meet <em>you<\/em>. [Laughter] I love it; it absolutely is fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the other group of people I want to say\u2014in addition to listeners\u2014I want to say, \u201cThanks,\u201d to those of you who are stakeholders and stockholders in this ministry\u2014who have given to keep this broadcast on the air for <em>25 years<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cThank you,\u201d for looking past your own needs to the needs of other marriages and families in our nation. <em>You<\/em> have been a difference-maker.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019ve been the folks who have made it possible for the reach of this program to be extended every year, and we are grateful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe thought, in celebration of our 25<sup>th<\/sup> birthday, we would revisit some of the highlights of the last 25 years\u2014some of the people we\u2019ve had a chance to meet, and to befriend, and to get to know. One of those folks was the BMI [Broadcast Music Inc.] songwriter of the year five years in a row, from 1986 to 1991. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe wrote the song that Randy Travis recorded, <em>Forever and Ever, Amen<\/em>. His name\u2019s Paul Overstreet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Good friend.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You remember\u2014when we sat down with him and asked him about that song, <em>Forever and Ever, Amen<\/em>, he shared with us that song had kind of an unusual beginning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I never really saw marriage at work\u2014other than people outside of our immediate family\u2014so I didn\u2019t really know what it looked like. I mentioned that to Julie\u2014I said: \u201cWell, you know, we\u2019ll give it our best. If it doesn\u2019t work, we can go our separate ways.\u201d In a conversation we had one time, I said that; and she went, \u201cNo!\u201d She said: \u201cThis is it! There is no other one for me. This is the one.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I was still trying to get my life together. I mean, the Lord had appeared to me in a dream\u2014and showed me that He was on a horse, calling His army together to go to battle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was standing by the side of the road that He was coming down. I had my hand in the air, saying, \u201cI\u2019ll go.\u201d He didn\u2019t recognize me. I woke up at that moment; and I just realized, at that moment, that the life I was living was useless to Him. You know, music \/ business\u2014music was my god. I had replaced Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior with the industry\u2014the music business\u2014and it was not a very good god.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I realized that all the joy and the zest for life had gone\u2014at that point, I started really looking at my life and trying to find out what it was that was missing. I found it\u2014it was Jesus Christ\u2014He was missing. I said: \u201cThat\u2019s what I want. More than the music business \/ more than anything, I want that happiness \/ that joy that comes from that relationship with Him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt that point, I surrendered it all. That\u2019s why I thought He was going to tell me to get out of business, because that was still something I wanted; but I felt like the Lord started telling me ideas. The first song that I remember Him telling me that, really, was to write a certain way was a song I wrote with Tom Skylar called <em>I Fell in Love Again Last Night<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>When I got the idea, it tried to be like: \u201cOh, I met somebody in a club last night,\u201d you know, \u201cand I fell in love again.\u201d It was like\u2014you know, that kind of thing. I remember making that conscious decision of going: \u201cThat\u2019s not what the Lord wants from me anymore. He wants me to say\u201d\u2014and I wasn\u2019t sure how to go about it; but when I got with Tom Skylar\u2014he\u2019s a tremendous writer\u2014and we were able to channel it in that it happens with the same person, over and over again\u2014that you keep falling in love with that person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well again, that\u2019s Paul Overstreet, country music singer\/songwriter. So many of his songs just are what we\u2019re all about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They are, and what he found was help and hope in the person of Jesus Christ. That\u2019s what <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> has been all about over the past 25 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We had the opportunity, over the years, to make friends with Steven Curtis and Mary Beth Chapman. They\u2019ve been with us at a number of events \/ been here, in the studio with us, many times. They\u2019ve been very candid and transparent about their own challenges\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They have. It\u2019s great.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014their own struggles. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, Mary Beth talked about what was really a very dark time in their marriage, and it was right at the point where Steven\u2019s career was taking off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>I think, early on, at the beginning, Steven was right at the point of\u2014it was around 1991\u2014<em>The Great Adventure<\/em> was just coming out. I don\u2019t know if you remember this, but that was back in the day where there were <em>massive<\/em> tours. I had just had Will \/ we had just moved into a different home. For anybody that has followed us \/ our journey, it\u2019s: \u201cHoly wedlock and holy headlock all mixed together\u201d\u2014[Laughter]\u2014that\u2019s what our pastor, who\u2019s done much counseling with us over the years, kind of dubbed it\u2014and dubbed him \u201cTigger\u201d and I\u2019m \u201cEeyore.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLooking back, I had struggled all along\u2014didn\u2019t really realize or know really how to put a finger on it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot many people were talking about depression back then; but right after Will Franklin was born, I had a gallbladder attack. I had it the night\u2014well, I hadn\u2019t been feeling well for a long time\u2014and I had it the night that he got on a bus to go to Texas to be Steven Curtis Chapman in a big concert in Texas. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Mr. Bigshot\u2014Mr. Steven Curtis Chapman!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>Well, if you\u2019ll remember\u2014the song, <em>I Will Be Here<\/em>, was on that record\u2014[Laughter]\u2014and he was <em>there<\/em>. All of this was\u2014I was the ripe old age of 26\u2014three children-in at that point. I really wanted him to go, and I <em>really<\/em> was trying to be behind him and support him; but obviously, didn\u2019t know I was going to have this gallbladder thing come up. Mom was in town, helping, because Will Franklin was brand new; Caleb was 15 months old; and Emily was, I guess, four-and-a-half at the time\u2014so she came to help. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, I think, looking back, the enemy is just like\u2014he knew what was getting ready to happen. I think he knew that there was just going to be this longevity of a career\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014not because of the talent \/ not because of the songs\u2014[speaking to Steven] you are talented, and you have great songs\u2014but because of what God was going to accomplish through him, there was just this full onslaught attack. It was really the first time that I just kind of imploded. That\u2019s when it really began to become something that I had to recognize\u2014as well as Steve, then, had to recognize with me\u2014and then kind of get a good game plan, as far as that goes, to help me to begin to deal with it the best way that we knew how and with the right help.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt continues today; and about the time we get a good handle on it, something else happens. In 2008, when Maria passed away\u2014and it was traumatic and a tragedy, and it involved another child of ours\u2014it rears its ugly head again. We\u2019re just really kind of committed to take it a day at a time\u2014<em>v<\/em><em>ery<\/em> honest, obviously, with my own children, too; and they know the journey that I\u2019m on; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well again, that\u2019s Mary Beth Chapman, along with her husband, Steven Curtis Chapman. I just appreciated their willingness to just be real people and let folks know, \u201cWe go through struggles too.\u201d There is something about that kind of transparency that\u2019s attractive; don\u2019t you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think so; and it just points out: \u201cNo one\u2019s exempt. You can sing about it, you can tell people about it, you can attempt to walk with Christ yourself; you are going to face days that are <em>tough<\/em>, and He can meet you in those tough days.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, one of the things that has been really delightful about our broadcast is\u2014not only sharing, you know, hard stories \/ dark stories like Mary Beth just shared\u2014but also stories of guys who were \u201cbest in class.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know this\u2014this is one of my top-five favorite interviews out of a thousand that we\u2019ve done over the years\u2014Coach John Wooden, coach of the UCLA Bruins, who coached basketball \/ won ten NCA championships in <em>twelve<\/em> years. What a privilege to sit at the table with him, at the age of 92, and listen to him share lessons of life\u2014really, from a patriarch.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and when we sat down with him, we started asking questions that the average sports broadcaster doesn\u2019t ask. We started asking about his family, and we heard that part of the man he was went all the way back to the father he had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your dad had a profound impact on your life. In fact, I was so looking forward to this interview with you; because I\u2019ve quoted you about something that you said you carried around in your pocket\u2014or it, first of all, was carried around in your father\u2019s pocket; is that right?\u2014and then you started carrying it around?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was your dad\u2019s creed, and then a poem by a pastor by the name of Henry Van Dyke.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John: <\/strong>My father gave it to me when I graduated from the eighth grade. He gave me a $2 bill\u2014one of those large $2 dollar bills\u2014and said, \u201cSon, as long as you keep this, you\u2019ll never be broke.\u201d [Laughter] Then he also gave me a card, and on one side was a verse by Reverend Van Dyke that said: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFour things a man must learn to do \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf he would make his life more true:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo think without confusion, clearly;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo love his fellow man sincerely;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo act from honest motives purely;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo trust in God and heaven securely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd on the other side was a seven-point creed:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe seven-point creed consisted of, first of all, I think it was \u201cBe true to yourself.\u201d I think we know, if we\u2019re true to ourselves, we will be true to others. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second was \u201cHelp others.\u201d There\u2019s no greater joy that a person can have than do something for someone else, especially when you do it without thought of something in return. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother one was \u201cMake friendship a fine art.\u201d Work at it; don\u2019t take it for granted. Work at making friends and making friendship flourish. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then was one that I think stood out to me a great deal\u2014was: \u201cMake each day your masterpiece.\u201d I tried to teach that, as time went by, to my players and my English students\u2014to just try to do the best you can each day\u2014just make each day your masterpiece. It\u2019s the only thing over which you have control. You have no control over yesterday\u2014that\u2019ll never change. The only way you can affect tomorrow is today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then another one was to \u201cDrink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then was \u201cBuild a shelter against a rainy day.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe wasn\u2019t thinking about a physical shelter; he was thinking about a more lasting shelter. When I think about that, I think of when Socrates was unjustly imprisoned and facing imminent death. The jailers, who were mean people\u2014they couldn\u2019t understand his serenity\u2014and they said, \u201cWhy aren\u2019t you preparing for death?\u201d His statement was, \u201cI\u2019ve been preparing for death all my life with the life I\u2019ve led.\u201d When I think of building a shelter against a rainy day, I think that\u2019s what Dad had in mind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen the last was\u2014the seventh was: \u201cGive thanks for your blessings and pray for guidance every day.\u201d I\u2019ve carried that with me in one form or another since those days; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s Coach John Wooden from UCLA, who, of course, has gone on to be with the Lord at this point; but when we met with him, he just didn\u2019t carry that in his pocket\u2014he shared that with his teams. He was as much about building character in the lives of young men as he was about teaching basketball.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He was; and Bob, he was about racial reconciliation and addressing the issue of race, back when it had a different look than it has today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; we asked him about an early tournament that he took a team from Indiana to, and he found that there was a line drawn between black and white.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John: <\/strong>I had one black player on my team, and they wouldn\u2019t let him play in the tournament. Even though this was\u2014of the 12 men on our team, he played the least of all \/ he didn\u2019t get to play very much\u2014and I wouldn\u2019t go without him, because he was a part of the team. I refused the invitation and wouldn\u2019t go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the next year, I had everybody back on this team\u2014exactly the same team\u2014no one came in, beat anybody else out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the next year, we had a good year and were invited again; I refused again. Finally, they reluctantly said that he could come; but he couldn\u2019t stay in the Muehlebach Hotel, where the teams were staying\u2014he\u2019d have to stay someplace else. He could have his meals there, providing we would take them in a private room. I said: \u201cNo. No; we wouldn\u2019t do that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut then, I was persuaded by the NCAA and his parents that we should go: \u201cIt might help.\u201d So, we went. He stayed with a minister and his wife and didn\u2019t get to play very much at all, but that was the first black player that had ever played in that tournament. I think, a few years later, an all-black team won it. So, we sort of opened the door.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>[Laughter] I love that story!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Isn\u2019t that a great story?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It speaks of courage\u2014of one man who stood for something. Bob, I think we can go to\u2014I think we can go to school on him and apply that same courage in our lives today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There\u2019s another courageous coach we had a chance to sit down with\u2014that\u2019s Coach Tony Dungy, who was a Super Bowl champion coach. Now, most of us see him Sunday nights\u2014on football night in America. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe sat down and talked with him about a dark chapter he went through in his life when his son took his own life. That, of course, was crushing for Tony and his wife \/ it was very painful. He shared about it at the Athletes in Action Super Bowl breakfast. We aired his story and, then, we visited with him a little bit about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>When I was at the funeral, I talked about one of my biggest regrets. James was home for Thanksgiving and was leaving\u2014going back to school and going back to work\u2014and just a normal process. You don\u2019t think about it\u2014I said, \u201cHey, I\u2019ll see you later.\u201d My daughter took him to the airport \/ we just exchanged a, \u201cSee you later,\u201d\u2014and that was the last time I saw him. I talked to him on the phone a lot but never saw him again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI shared, at the funeral, that my biggest regret was that I didn\u2019t give him a big hug the very last time I saw him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI met a guy the next day after the funeral; and he said: \u201cYou know, I was there\u2014I heard you talking. I took off work today. I called my son and I said, \u201cI\u2019m going to take you to the movies, and we\u2019re going to spend some time and go to dinner.\u201d That was a real, real blessing to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were able to donate some of James\u2019 organs to organ donors\u2019 program. We got a letter back, about two weeks ago, that two people had received his corneas and now can see. We got a letter from a girl in our church, who had grown up with James; and she said: \u201cYou know, we\u2019ve been going to the same church in Tampa for all these years. I sat there in church every Sunday, but never really knowing if there was a God or not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI came to the funeral because I knew James. When I saw what happened at the funeral\u2014and your family, and how it was handled\u2014that was the first time I realized, \u2018There <em>has<\/em> to be a God.\u2019 I accepted Christ into my life and my life\u2019s been different since that day.\u201d [Applause] And that was an awesome blessing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll those things have kind of made me realize what God\u2019s love is all about\u2014but here\u2019s the biggest part of that\u2014if God had had a conversation with me and said, \u201cI can help some people see; I can heal some relationships; I can give some people eternal life; but I have to take your son to do it\u2014you make the choice,\u201d I know how I\u2019d have answered that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d have said: \u201cNo; I\u2019m sorry. As great as all that is, I don\u2019t want to do that.\u201d And that\u2019s the awesome thing about God\u2014He had that choice\u2014and He said, \u201cYes; I\u2019m going to do it,\u201d 2,000 years ago, with His Son Jesus on the cross.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Coach, what\u2019s it like to listen to your words?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>I can hardly even believe it. I guess\u2014when you\u2019re up there, talking\u2014you don\u2019t know how it sounds. I\u2019d always had the dream of taking my team to that breakfast and talking about the game; and that\u2019s what I had hoped to do that year, and it didn\u2019t work out that way. But I realized, at the time, I had a great opportunity to tell people about something more important than the Super Bowl \/ more important than the team\u2014to talk about Christ and the lessons that I had learned from all three of my boys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tListening to it, it\u2019s hard to believe; but that was <em>really<\/em> what was on my heart at the time, and it was just the proper place to say it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019ve taken the story on more than one occasion to be able to point people back to God and not become embittered toward Him but, ultimately, to move toward Him, and toward faith, and trust in Him. You really believe that\u2019s what we must do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>We have to do that. There are things that we don\u2019t understand\u2014and \u201cWhy does God allow these things to happen? Why does God take situations that we think are tragic and use them? Why doesn\u2019t He <em>always<\/em> bless us the way we want to be blessed?\u201d\u2014those are the questions that we\u2019ll never really be able to answer, but faith and believing really mean believing in <em>all<\/em> situations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>One of the things I\u2019ve heard you say, Coach, is that rather than asking the question, \u201cWhy?\u201d we need to ask the question, \u201cWhat?\u201d That\u2019s the question you\u2019re trying to answer in the loss of your son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>\u201cWhat am I supposed to learn from this? What am I supposed to do to help other people? How can we make it as positive as we can?\u201d You\u2019re always going to have the heartbreak \/ you\u2019re always going to have the pain in your heart, but how do you really look forward and see how you can go and grow from that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well again, Coach Tony Dungy, from an earlier <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> program. Steven Curtis Chapman and his wife Mary Beth are just a few of the people who have joined us over the years to share with us their own insights on marriage and family. Thanks for joining us on the Monday edition. Here it is\u2014it\u2019s birthday week! This week, we will celebrate our 25<sup>th<\/sup> birthday! We look a lot older than that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think we do; no doubt about it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, as I think back 25 years, Bob, one of my favorite memories is how we started. I mean, we couldn\u2019t afford a top studio, here, in town \/ we didn\u2019t have a studio\u2014so we had to rent it. We found a place\u2014you remember this. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was dirt cheap. It had egg cartons\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The egg cartons, burlap and lattice\u2014yes; it was well sound-proofed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh my goodness. But we named the place \u201cBethlehem,\u201d because we were hoping something <em>great<\/em> would happen out of something so humble. It\u2019s been quite a ride; and it has, indeed, been a privilege to come to you, as a listener, now for 25 years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to, at the outset, say, \u201cThank you,\u201d to two groups of people. First of all, \u201cThank you,\u201d for the listeners, who faithfully tune in\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I just ran into one; you did too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She\u2019s in your fan club, though, Bob. [Laughter] She didn\u2019t want to meet <em>me<\/em>; she wanted to meet <em>you<\/em>. [Laughter] I love it; it absolutely is fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the other group of people I want to say\u2014in addition to listeners\u2014I want to say, \u201cThanks,\u201d to those of you who are stakeholders and stockholders in this ministry\u2014who have given to keep this broadcast on the air for <em>25 years<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cThank you,\u201d for looking past your own needs to the needs of other marriages and families in our nation. <em>You<\/em> have been a difference-maker.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019ve been the folks who have made it possible for the reach of this program to be extended every year, and we are grateful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe thought, in celebration of our 25<sup>th<\/sup> birthday, we would revisit some of the highlights of the last 25 years\u2014some of the people we\u2019ve had a chance to meet, and to befriend, and to get to know. One of those folks was the BMI [Broadcast Music Inc.] songwriter of the year five years in a row, from 1986 to 1991. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe wrote the song that Randy Travis recorded, <em>Forever and Ever, Amen<\/em>. His name\u2019s Paul Overstreet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Good friend.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You remember\u2014when we sat down with him and asked him about that song, <em>Forever and Ever, Amen<\/em>, he shared with us that song had kind of an unusual beginning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I never really saw marriage at work\u2014other than people outside of our immediate family\u2014so I didn\u2019t really know what it looked like. I mentioned that to Julie\u2014I said: \u201cWell, you know, we\u2019ll give it our best. If it doesn\u2019t work, we can go our separate ways.\u201d In a conversation we had one time, I said that; and she went, \u201cNo!\u201d She said: \u201cThis is it! There is no other one for me. This is the one.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I was still trying to get my life together. I mean, the Lord had appeared to me in a dream\u2014and showed me that He was on a horse, calling His army together to go to battle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was standing by the side of the road that He was coming down. I had my hand in the air, saying, \u201cI\u2019ll go.\u201d He didn\u2019t recognize me. I woke up at that moment; and I just realized, at that moment, that the life I was living was useless to Him. You know, music \/ business\u2014music was my god. I had replaced Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior with the industry\u2014the music business\u2014and it was not a very good god.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I realized that all the joy and the zest for life had gone\u2014at that point, I started really looking at my life and trying to find out what it was that was missing. I found it\u2014it was Jesus Christ\u2014He was missing. I said: \u201cThat\u2019s what I want. More than the music business \/ more than anything, I want that happiness \/ that joy that comes from that relationship with Him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt that point, I surrendered it all. That\u2019s why I thought He was going to tell me to get out of business, because that was still something I wanted; but I felt like the Lord started telling me ideas. The first song that I remember Him telling me that, really, was to write a certain way was a song I wrote with Tom Skylar called <em>I Fell in Love Again Last Night<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>When I got the idea, it tried to be like: \u201cOh, I met somebody in a club last night,\u201d you know, \u201cand I fell in love again.\u201d It was like\u2014you know, that kind of thing. I remember making that conscious decision of going: \u201cThat\u2019s not what the Lord wants from me anymore. He wants me to say\u201d\u2014and I wasn\u2019t sure how to go about it; but when I got with Tom Skylar\u2014he\u2019s a tremendous writer\u2014and we were able to channel it in that it happens with the same person, over and over again\u2014that you keep falling in love with that person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well again, that\u2019s Paul Overstreet, country music singer\/songwriter. So many of his songs just are what we\u2019re all about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They are, and what he found was help and hope in the person of Jesus Christ. That\u2019s what <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> has been all about over the past 25 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We had the opportunity, over the years, to make friends with Steven Curtis and Mary Beth Chapman. They\u2019ve been with us at a number of events \/ been here, in the studio with us, many times. They\u2019ve been very candid and transparent about their own challenges\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They have. It\u2019s great.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014their own struggles. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, Mary Beth talked about what was really a very dark time in their marriage, and it was right at the point where Steven\u2019s career was taking off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>I think, early on, at the beginning, Steven was right at the point of\u2014it was around 1991\u2014<em>The Great Adventure<\/em> was just coming out. I don\u2019t know if you remember this, but that was back in the day where there were <em>massive<\/em> tours. I had just had Will \/ we had just moved into a different home. For anybody that has followed us \/ our journey, it\u2019s: \u201cHoly wedlock and holy headlock all mixed together\u201d\u2014[Laughter]\u2014that\u2019s what our pastor, who\u2019s done much counseling with us over the years, kind of dubbed it\u2014and dubbed him \u201cTigger\u201d and I\u2019m \u201cEeyore.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLooking back, I had struggled all along\u2014didn\u2019t really realize or know really how to put a finger on it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot many people were talking about depression back then; but right after Will Franklin was born, I had a gallbladder attack. I had it the night\u2014well, I hadn\u2019t been feeling well for a long time\u2014and I had it the night that he got on a bus to go to Texas to be Steven Curtis Chapman in a big concert in Texas. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Mr. Bigshot\u2014Mr. Steven Curtis Chapman!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>Well, if you\u2019ll remember\u2014the song, <em>I Will Be Here<\/em>, was on that record\u2014[Laughter]\u2014and he was <em>there<\/em>. All of this was\u2014I was the ripe old age of 26\u2014three children-in at that point. I really wanted him to go, and I <em>really<\/em> was trying to be behind him and support him; but obviously, didn\u2019t know I was going to have this gallbladder thing come up. Mom was in town, helping, because Will Franklin was brand new; Caleb was 15 months old; and Emily was, I guess, four-and-a-half at the time\u2014so she came to help. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, I think, looking back, the enemy is just like\u2014he knew what was getting ready to happen. I think he knew that there was just going to be this longevity of a career\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014not because of the talent \/ not because of the songs\u2014[speaking to Steven] you are talented, and you have great songs\u2014but because of what God was going to accomplish through him, there was just this full onslaught attack. It was really the first time that I just kind of imploded. That\u2019s when it really began to become something that I had to recognize\u2014as well as Steve, then, had to recognize with me\u2014and then kind of get a good game plan, as far as that goes, to help me to begin to deal with it the best way that we knew how and with the right help.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt continues today; and about the time we get a good handle on it, something else happens. In 2008, when Maria passed away\u2014and it was traumatic and a tragedy, and it involved another child of ours\u2014it rears its ugly head again. We\u2019re just really kind of committed to take it a day at a time\u2014<em>v<\/em><em>ery<\/em> honest, obviously, with my own children, too; and they know the journey that I\u2019m on; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well again, that\u2019s Mary Beth Chapman, along with her husband, Steven Curtis Chapman. I just appreciated their willingness to just be real people and let folks know, \u201cWe go through struggles too.\u201d There is something about that kind of transparency that\u2019s attractive; don\u2019t you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think so; and it just points out: \u201cNo one\u2019s exempt. You can sing about it, you can tell people about it, you can attempt to walk with Christ yourself; you are going to face days that are <em>tough<\/em>, and He can meet you in those tough days.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, one of the things that has been really delightful about our broadcast is\u2014not only sharing, you know, hard stories \/ dark stories like Mary Beth just shared\u2014but also stories of guys who were \u201cbest in class.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know this\u2014this is one of my top-five favorite interviews out of a thousand that we\u2019ve done over the years\u2014Coach John Wooden, coach of the UCLA Bruins, who coached basketball \/ won ten NCA championships in <em>twelve<\/em> years. What a privilege to sit at the table with him, at the age of 92, and listen to him share lessons of life\u2014really, from a patriarch.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and when we sat down with him, we started asking questions that the average sports broadcaster doesn\u2019t ask. We started asking about his family, and we heard that part of the man he was went all the way back to the father he had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your dad had a profound impact on your life. In fact, I was so looking forward to this interview with you; because I\u2019ve quoted you about something that you said you carried around in your pocket\u2014or it, first of all, was carried around in your father\u2019s pocket; is that right?\u2014and then you started carrying it around?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was your dad\u2019s creed, and then a poem by a pastor by the name of Henry Van Dyke.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John: <\/strong>My father gave it to me when I graduated from the eighth grade. He gave me a $2 bill\u2014one of those large $2 dollar bills\u2014and said, \u201cSon, as long as you keep this, you\u2019ll never be broke.\u201d [Laughter] Then he also gave me a card, and on one side was a verse by Reverend Van Dyke that said: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFour things a man must learn to do \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf he would make his life more true:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo think without confusion, clearly;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo love his fellow man sincerely;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo act from honest motives purely;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo trust in God and heaven securely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd on the other side was a seven-point creed:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe seven-point creed consisted of, first of all, I think it was \u201cBe true to yourself.\u201d I think we know, if we\u2019re true to ourselves, we will be true to others. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second was \u201cHelp others.\u201d There\u2019s no greater joy that a person can have than do something for someone else, especially when you do it without thought of something in return. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother one was \u201cMake friendship a fine art.\u201d Work at it; don\u2019t take it for granted. Work at making friends and making friendship flourish. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then was one that I think stood out to me a great deal\u2014was: \u201cMake each day your masterpiece.\u201d I tried to teach that, as time went by, to my players and my English students\u2014to just try to do the best you can each day\u2014just make each day your masterpiece. It\u2019s the only thing over which you have control. You have no control over yesterday\u2014that\u2019ll never change. The only way you can affect tomorrow is today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then another one was to \u201cDrink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then was \u201cBuild a shelter against a rainy day.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe wasn\u2019t thinking about a physical shelter; he was thinking about a more lasting shelter. When I think about that, I think of when Socrates was unjustly imprisoned and facing imminent death. The jailers, who were mean people\u2014they couldn\u2019t understand his serenity\u2014and they said, \u201cWhy aren\u2019t you preparing for death?\u201d His statement was, \u201cI\u2019ve been preparing for death all my life with the life I\u2019ve led.\u201d When I think of building a shelter against a rainy day, I think that\u2019s what Dad had in mind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen the last was\u2014the seventh was: \u201cGive thanks for your blessings and pray for guidance every day.\u201d I\u2019ve carried that with me in one form or another since those days; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s Coach John Wooden from UCLA, who, of course, has gone on to be with the Lord at this point; but when we met with him, he just didn\u2019t carry that in his pocket\u2014he shared that with his teams. He was as much about building character in the lives of young men as he was about teaching basketball.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He was; and Bob, he was about racial reconciliation and addressing the issue of race, back when it had a different look than it has today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; we asked him about an early tournament that he took a team from Indiana to, and he found that there was a line drawn between black and white.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John: <\/strong>I had one black player on my team, and they wouldn\u2019t let him play in the tournament. Even though this was\u2014of the 12 men on our team, he played the least of all \/ he didn\u2019t get to play very much\u2014and I wouldn\u2019t go without him, because he was a part of the team. I refused the invitation and wouldn\u2019t go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the next year, I had everybody back on this team\u2014exactly the same team\u2014no one came in, beat anybody else out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the next year, we had a good year and were invited again; I refused again. Finally, they reluctantly said that he could come; but he couldn\u2019t stay in the Muehlebach Hotel, where the teams were staying\u2014he\u2019d have to stay someplace else. He could have his meals there, providing we would take them in a private room. I said: \u201cNo. No; we wouldn\u2019t do that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut then, I was persuaded by the NCAA and his parents that we should go: \u201cIt might help.\u201d So, we went. He stayed with a minister and his wife and didn\u2019t get to play very much at all, but that was the first black player that had ever played in that tournament. I think, a few years later, an all-black team won it. So, we sort of opened the door.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>[Laughter] I love that story!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Isn\u2019t that a great story?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It speaks of courage\u2014of one man who stood for something. Bob, I think we can go to\u2014I think we can go to school on him and apply that same courage in our lives today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There\u2019s another courageous coach we had a chance to sit down with\u2014that\u2019s Coach Tony Dungy, who was a Super Bowl champion coach. Now, most of us see him Sunday nights\u2014on football night in America. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe sat down and talked with him about a dark chapter he went through in his life when his son took his own life. That, of course, was crushing for Tony and his wife \/ it was very painful. He shared about it at the Athletes in Action Super Bowl breakfast. We aired his story and, then, we visited with him a little bit about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>When I was at the funeral, I talked about one of my biggest regrets. James was home for Thanksgiving and was leaving\u2014going back to school and going back to work\u2014and just a normal process. You don\u2019t think about it\u2014I said, \u201cHey, I\u2019ll see you later.\u201d My daughter took him to the airport \/ we just exchanged a, \u201cSee you later,\u201d\u2014and that was the last time I saw him. I talked to him on the phone a lot but never saw him again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI shared, at the funeral, that my biggest regret was that I didn\u2019t give him a big hug the very last time I saw him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI met a guy the next day after the funeral; and he said: \u201cYou know, I was there\u2014I heard you talking. I took off work today. I called my son and I said, \u201cI\u2019m going to take you to the movies, and we\u2019re going to spend some time and go to dinner.\u201d That was a real, real blessing to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were able to donate some of James\u2019 organs to organ donors\u2019 program. We got a letter back, about two weeks ago, that two people had received his corneas and now can see. We got a letter from a girl in our church, who had grown up with James; and she said: \u201cYou know, we\u2019ve been going to the same church in Tampa for all these years. I sat there in church every Sunday, but never really knowing if there was a God or not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI came to the funeral because I knew James. When I saw what happened at the funeral\u2014and your family, and how it was handled\u2014that was the first time I realized, \u2018There <em>has<\/em> to be a God.\u2019 I accepted Christ into my life and my life\u2019s been different since that day.\u201d [Applause] And that was an awesome blessing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll those things have kind of made me realize what God\u2019s love is all about\u2014but here\u2019s the biggest part of that\u2014if God had had a conversation with me and said, \u201cI can help some people see; I can heal some relationships; I can give some people eternal life; but I have to take your son to do it\u2014you make the choice,\u201d I know how I\u2019d have answered that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d have said: \u201cNo; I\u2019m sorry. As great as all that is, I don\u2019t want to do that.\u201d And that\u2019s the awesome thing about God\u2014He had that choice\u2014and He said, \u201cYes; I\u2019m going to do it,\u201d 2,000 years ago, with His Son Jesus on the cross.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Coach, what\u2019s it like to listen to your words?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>I can hardly even believe it. I guess\u2014when you\u2019re up there, talking\u2014you don\u2019t know how it sounds. I\u2019d always had the dream of taking my team to that breakfast and talking about the game; and that\u2019s what I had hoped to do that year, and it didn\u2019t work out that way. But I realized, at the time, I had a great opportunity to tell people about something more important than the Super Bowl \/ more important than the team\u2014to talk about Christ and the lessons that I had learned from all three of my boys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tListening to it, it\u2019s hard to believe; but that was <em>really<\/em> what was on my heart at the time, and it was just the proper place to say it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019ve taken the story on more than one occasion to be able to point people back to God and not become embittered toward Him but, ultimately, to move toward Him, and toward faith, and trust in Him. You really believe that\u2019s what we must do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>We have to do that. There are things that we don\u2019t understand\u2014and \u201cWhy does God allow these things to happen? Why does God take situations that we think are tragic and use them? Why doesn\u2019t He <em>always<\/em> bless us the way we want to be blessed?\u201d\u2014those are the questions that we\u2019ll never really be able to answer, but faith and believing really mean believing in <em>all<\/em> situations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>One of the things I\u2019ve heard you say, Coach, is that rather than asking the question, \u201cWhy?\u201d we need to ask the question, \u201cWhat?\u201d That\u2019s the question you\u2019re trying to answer in the loss of your son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>\u201cWhat am I supposed to learn from this? What am I supposed to do to help other people?
