My mom made all of us play the <em>We Gather Together<\/em> song, and it sounded <em>terrible<\/em>!\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we were not good at piano. It was like [mimicking musical notes], but I know what you\u2019re talking about. We praised the Lord through our bad piano playing! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, Barbara, you\u2019re really calling families to, once again, focus on the concept of gathering. I watched you kind of circle this word, and Tracy\u2019s nodding her head too. Why the word, \u201cgather\u201d? It seems like it\u2019s a word we take for granted; maybe you need to just revisit it for a moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019ve discovered that \u201cgather\u201d is used in the Bible over and over again. I didn\u2019t really know that before. You see \u201cgather\u201d stitched on pillows and you see it used in marketing or in the fall; but I realized it\u2019s not just a great marketing word\u2014it\u2019s a biblical word. God uses the word, \u201cgather,\u201d throughout the Old and the New Testament, primarily to talk about how He longs to gather His people and how He will gather His people. The concept of bringing them from all over the globe, together again, is a picture of a Father\u2019s heart, I think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe <em>wants<\/em> His children to be together, because He loves His children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI like that; because, as a mom, I <em>love <\/em>it when my kids come home and we gather together at home, especially around Thanksgiving, because we get to be together, and we get to love one another, and we get to enjoy one another and have a great time together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, stop and think about this\u2014of the major holidays, maybe only Christmas has more gathering power than Thanksgiving\u2014because families may get together on the Fourth of July if they live near one another; they may get together at Easter, although we spent Easter with people from church and with none of our kids\u2014they were all back home with their families. But there is something about\u2014is it November? Is it\u2014it\u2019s three or four weeks before Christmas; and if they\u2019re coming for Christmas, why is it that Thanksgiving is a gathering time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, I think there\u2019s something to coming home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think a lot of families\u2014and this is true in our family\u2014a lot of families spend Christmas with their nuclear family. Our kids all spend Christmas with their kids in their various locations around the country. Because none of our children live at home\u2014they all live in different states\u2014Thanksgiving is the <em>easiest<\/em> time for them to come home. They don\u2019t have to bring packages \/ they don\u2019t have to bring snowsuits, because it\u2019s not that cold yet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThanksgiving is much less encumbered. It\u2019s easier to gather together as a family\u2014and play games, and visit, and conversation\u2014without the complexity of gifts and all of the things that are associated with Christmas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tracy, you\u2019re in the middle\u2014with your own children but, also, with extended family and parents\u2014what\u2019s typical for your family at Thanksgiving?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tracy:<\/strong> What\u2019s really fun is that, even though we have two young kids now, at Thanksgiving, it\u2019s the one holiday where we still do what I did when I grew up\u2014so, we still travel\u2014Matt and I pack up our little girls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Over the river and through the woods?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tracy:<\/strong> We do! And we sing that song too. [Laughter] We drive about six hours to western Oklahoma, and we visit my grandmother. She just turned 90 in September, and we still all go there every Thanksgiving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; but aren\u2019t there times in late November when you go: \u201cLet\u2019s\u2014we should just cancel it this year. I mean, there\u2019s so much going on, and it\u2019s a six-hour trip. The weather may be bad,\u201d\u2014all of that! Have you had those thoughts?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tracy:<\/strong> We have; and that\u2019s when my five-year-old Audrey says: \u201cBut, Mama! We have to go to Nanaw\u2019s house!\u201d And that\u2019s when I remember why we do it, because that was me when I was a little girl: \u201cBut, mama, we\u2019re going to Nanaw\u2019s house; aren\u2019t we?\u201d And now\u2014just to see that we\u2019re passing that on to my girls \/ that\u2019s what we want to do\u2014just that legacy of gathering together, and the importance of celebrating, and honoring my grandma.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I just want to throw out something, as folks think about heading home for the holidays over Thanksgiving, because it\u2019s not cluttered with a lot of materialism\u2014there\u2019s not nearly as much commercialism around Thanksgiving. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d like to challenge every dad \/ every mom, who\u2019s listening to this broadcast\u2014and maybe a kid or two\u2014to, when you head home or as you host your family coming home, decide what you\u2019re going to do: \u201cWhat\u2019s going to be the focus of the Thanksgiving?\u201d\u2014just one big idea. Maybe it\u2019s to spend time honoring \u201cNana,\u201d or \u201cPapa,\u201d or grandma for the role she\u2019s played in the family\u2014give her tributes \/ give her honor\u2014take letters back and read them back to her\u2014but go on purpose. Take a little something with you and give some gifts this Thanksgiving season that, perhaps, you\u2019ve never given in the past. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, one of the things that I would suggest, in light of what you just said, is for families to try the \u201cUntie Your Story\u201d product that we\u2019ve created at Ever Thine Home. It\u2019s a spool of ribbon, and the ribbon has questions printed on it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a great way to have meaningful conversation with people who are the most important people in your life. It\u2019s so <em>easy<\/em> to have trivial conversations about the football games, or the weather, or whatever\u2014politics \/ things that we can talk about at any time of the year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut when we\u2019re gathered together with the people who mean the most to us\u2014which, again, as we talked about earlier, is a picture of God gathering His family together\u2014so when your family gathers together, take something like this with you and have a conversation that you\u2019ll never forget with aunts and uncles, and cousins, and grandmothers\u2014even your own family \/ your own husband, or your own wife, or one of your kids\u2014you might learn something about them that you didn\u2019t know by answering these questions around the table.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This spool that I\u2019ve got is called \u201cUntie Your Story: Memories.\u201d It has\u2014it says, \u201cTwelve napkin ribbons; twelve engaging questions.\u201d So, you actually pull this off the spool\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014pull out a pair of scissors, and cut them into 12 individual napkin ties.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And then place them around the table, and go around the table and let people answer them; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; and we\u2019ve done it with our kids. We had so much fun with one of these questions at Thanksgiving a year or two ago. One of the questions says, \u201cTell about your favorite teacher in school and why.\u201d [Laughter] My kids \/ our kids started talking about some of their favorite teachers. We never got to any of the other questions, because we had so much fun laughing about their memories of different teachers that they had. I remembered who those teachers were, and they all remembered because some of them had the same teachers. They would say, \u201cDo you remember how Mrs. So-and-so did this?!\u201d \u201cDo you remember this?\u201d It was really, really fun. We laughed so hard for about two hours, just about that one question.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are other questions on there that are maybe more meaningful, but the point is that you\u2019ll have conversations that you\u2019ll never forget. That\u2019s what we all long for as families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The purpose here is to make sure that your time has some meaning \/ has some intentionality\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that it\u2019s not just squandered. When you get the family together, one of the things you want to do is create some memories. You want to drive memory markers into the fabric of your family; but you\u2019re also wanting to make sure that you\u2019re having focused conversations on things that are eternally important, not just things that are casually important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I do think\u2014I mean, having a conversation about who your favorite teacher was\u2014those are fun conversations to have, and there\u2019s laughter, and all of that. But there\u2019s also an opportunity to talk about: \u201cWhat was it about that person\u2019s character?\u201d or \u201cWhat was it about what they taught you?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cHow did you see Jesus in them?\u201d that can really bring the whole thing back to where it belongs, which is thanks to God for His care in your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And, if you haven\u2019t read Psalm 100 recently, I just want to read it to you; because this is a great Psalm to think about as you enter the Thanksgiving holiday. This really talks about being intentional. Psalm 100, verse 1:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMake a joyful noise to the\u00a0Lord, all the earth!<br>Serve the\u00a0Lord\u00a0with gladness!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCome into his presence with singing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKnow that\u00a0the\u00a0Lord, he is God!<br>It is he who\u00a0made us, and\u00a0we are his;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are his\u00a0people, and\u00a0the sheep of his pasture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow listen to these two concluding verses:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEnter his gates with thanksgiving<br>And his\u00a0courts with praise!<br>Give thanks to him;\u00a0bless his name!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor the\u00a0Lord\u00a0is good; <br>His steadfast love endures forever,<br>And his\u00a0faithfulness to all generations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s speaking to families\u2014families need to celebrate who God is and give thanks, looking back over the past year, for what He\u2019s done in your individual lives and in your family. There may be some great stories that need to be told, that no one knows anything about, all because you entered His gates with thanksgiving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t13:00\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob: And, by the way, if you go to a church\u2014and it\u2019s been more than five years since they\u2019ve sung the 100th Psalm\u2014you know that one, too; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTracy: Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob: \u201cAll people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord a cheerful song.\u201d Then go to your worship pastor and say: \u201cCould we sing this? This is an old favorite of mine.\u201d Then just nudge him a little bit; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTracy: Or, you could just go to Nanaw\u2019s house. My grandma\u2014who, as I said, just turned 90\u2014we\u2019ll be there in a few weeks. She has her pump organ; so she gets her legs going\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara: Does she really?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob: Awesome!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTracy: Yes! Her voice isn\u2019t as good as it used to be; but she makes us sing those songs still, to this day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you were talking about\u2014His faithfulness goes on through all generations\u2014my daughter asked me, not long ago, \u201cMommy, how did you know to tell me about Jesus?\u201d It was just the sweetest thing, because what I got to tell her is, \u201cWell, my mommy told me; and her mommy told her\u2014and that\u2019s Nanaw.\u201d So we still go and celebrate Nanaw, who\u2019s the matriarch of our family, and has passed on God\u2019s faithfulness to all of these generations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; I just need to ask you guys: \u201cWhat do you do if the family dynamic is not the happy family that we\u2019re talking about here?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, Bob! I want to answer that! You still do it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tracy:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen when you ask a meaningful question that forces people to think. I know of a guy, who actually stepped out and did this with his family. He brought a relative to his home for Thanksgiving\u2014and he thought, \u201cThis is a gamble.\u201d They went around the table, and did \u201cUntie Your Story,\u201d and reflected back on their memories. At the end of the dinner, as the relative was walking to the car, he said, \u201cThis has been the best Thanksgiving I can recall in my life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I think we have this idealized image of what Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and other holidays look like; because we want them to be happy \/ we want them to be meaningful. We want them to be something where everyone goes home and says: \u201cThat was so great! I can\u2019t wait until next year.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the reality is\u2014we\u2019re all sinful people. The reality is\u2014kids are going to be unhappy; Aunt So-and-so\u2019s not going to be pleased with the way the casserole was made, because it wasn\u2019t made her way; whatever it is. Or you might have someone who\u2019s sick. I remember, a couple of years ago\u2014because we always gather at my mother\u2019s house for Thanksgiving. One year, we were all there; and one of my nephews got sick. It went to two or three people after him\u2014within 24 hours, we had a whole bunch of people sick. I mean, it was <em>bad <\/em>sick too!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you know\u2014it is life! It\u2019s just the way it is. You\u2019re going to have those people who are unhappy people, or the kids who are unhappy, or someone who\u2019s sick; and that\u2019s just a part of it. It\u2019s also a part of the memory, because we\u2019ve never forgotten that Thanksgiving when half of us got sick. [Laughter] But it is a part of being intentional. As you said, Dennis, we intentionally get together; because we love one another and we\u2019re committed to one another in family, even if we\u2019re not always happy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the bottom line\u2014is that we\u2019ve chosen to be together, because we are committed. It doesn\u2019t matter\u2014we\u2019re not going to stop going just because it\u2019s not perfect.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Some people are thinking back to last Thanksgiving and going: \u201cIt got angry; it got scary; it got loud. We hated it! We drove home, saying, \u2018We\u2019re never golng back.\u2019\u201d What do you do in those moments?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, I think I would evaluate what made it get scary, and angry, and loud. Was it because last year was an election year, and everybody was talking about what had just happened?\u2014[Laughter]\u2014and people just got out of control? I mean, it could be that it was the topic of conversation. Maybe, what God wants you to do is to be the one to steer the conversation and direct the time together so that it\u2019s intentionally focused on things that will be meaningful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I do think if you go home \/ go to the gathering with the intention: \u201cI\u2019m here to bless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m here to love. I\u2019m here, in the midst of the disruption, to turn the conversation in a different direction\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cto affirm \/ to say positive things\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cto point out the things I see in my relatives that I can\u2014that are praise-worthy \/ to give thanks for them.\u201d You can go into it with the right mindset; and at the end of the time, you can say: \u201cYou know what? Mission accomplished. I came to do what God would have me do, which is to love and to be an agent of grace in the midst of this place.\u201d Maybe it gets hurtful for some reason; but you just remember that you\u2019re there, first of all, to please the Lord and minister to the folks that God\u2019s given you to minister to at this holiday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tracy:<\/strong> I think it goes back to what you said in the beginning, Barbara\u2014gathering is not our idea; it\u2019s not something we came up with; it\u2019s not a consumeristic thing\u2014it\u2019s God! He\u2019s the One who is that example for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe gathers us as His children. If that\u2019s something that He does; and we can imitate Him in that way, it\u2019s worth doing. We can ask His Holy Spirit to empower us to do what we need to do in loving our families well and getting them together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; and God doesn\u2019t wait to gather us until we\u2019re perfect; He gathers us when we\u2019re imperfect. He loves us when we\u2019re sinful, and when we\u2019re not happy, and when we\u2019re not obeying, even. I think He\u2014it\u2019s a great reminder to remember that God calls us to imitate Him and to love, even when we\u2019re not loved in return.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Romans 5:8 says, \u201cWhile we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014\u201csinners.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> God\u2019s love was demonstrated when we were still His enemies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So Christ-likeness is demonstrating love, even if they\u2019re still enemies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to read here\u2014can I read this? This is the last verse of our hymn; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tracy:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So in the hymn, <em>Come, Ye Thankful People, Come<\/em>, the first verse is calling everybody to come for thanksgiving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second verse is all about how the harvest season is a picture of the spiritual harvest that God is engaged in. The third verse is a verse that says there is going to be a day of harvest coming when God will gather all His children in. And then the last verse is this: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven so, Lord, quickly come,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBring Thy final harvest home;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGather Thou Thy people in,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFree from sorrow, free from sin,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere forever purified,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Thy garner to abide;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCome with all Thine angels come,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRaise the glorious harvest home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Amen!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Pretty good; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> <em>Really <\/em>good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; and if they\u2019re not singing it at your church this Thanksgiving\u2014[Laughter] No; I\u2019m done; okay? That\u2019s all!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, Jesus said in John 14:3\u2014just to kind of finish this up\u2014He said: \u201cBehold, I go to prepare a place for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI will come again, and I will gather you to Myself.\u201d The gathering you\u2019re singing about, Bob, is when time will end. We\u2019ll all stand before God; and we will be truly in His courts, experiencing thanksgiving in person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to encourage families: \u201cThis Thanksgiving\u2014be intentional\u201d; would you? And one last thought: \u201cTake a family picture \/ get a picture of your family; and then blow it up for all of the families that are represented there, and send it to them as a gift.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was standing in front of the gallery in our kitchen. I wish you all could come to our kitchen and see how Barbara has created a little bit of a\u2014I don\u2019t even know how to describe it\u2014it\u2019s like a photo gallery of our grandkids \/ all of the families\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014of her family and the extended family that gathers together every Thanksgiving. I just was standing there, looking at it. It\u2019s amazing\u2014just looking at a picture and going: \u201cMan, Grandma\u2019s hanging in there\u2014almost 92! Man, she\u2019s in a lot of pain, but look at her\u2014she\u2019s loving it! She\u2019s surrounded by her family, gathered together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBe intentional about it this year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; and if we\u2019re going to be intentional, we\u2019ve got to make our relationships, as a family, a priority \/ make them central. My mom made all of us play the <em>We Gather Together<\/em> song, and it sounded <em>terrible<\/em>!\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we were not good at piano. It was like [mimicking musical notes], but I know what you\u2019re talking about. We praised the Lord through our bad piano playing! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, Barbara, you\u2019re really calling families to, once again, focus on the concept of gathering. I watched you kind of circle this word, and Tracy\u2019s nodding her head too. Why the word, \u201cgather\u201d? It seems like it\u2019s a word we take for granted; maybe you need to just revisit it for a moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019ve discovered that \u201cgather\u201d is used in the Bible over and over again. I didn\u2019t really know that before. You see \u201cgather\u201d stitched on pillows and you see it used in marketing or in the fall; but I realized it\u2019s not just a great marketing word\u2014it\u2019s a biblical word. God uses the word, \u201cgather,\u201d throughout the Old and the New Testament, primarily to talk about how He longs to gather His people and how He will gather His people. The concept of bringing them from all over the globe, together again, is a picture of a Father\u2019s heart, I think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe <em>wants<\/em> His children to be together, because He loves His children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI like that; because, as a mom, I <em>love <\/em>it when my kids come home and we gather together at home, especially around Thanksgiving, because we get to be together, and we get to love one another, and we get to enjoy one another and have a great time together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, stop and think about this\u2014of the major holidays, maybe only Christmas has more gathering power than Thanksgiving\u2014because families may get together on the Fourth of July if they live near one another; they may get together at Easter, although we spent Easter with people from church and with none of our kids\u2014they were all back home with their families. But there is something about\u2014is it November? Is it\u2014it\u2019s three or four weeks before Christmas; and if they\u2019re coming for Christmas, why is it that Thanksgiving is a gathering time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, I think there\u2019s something to coming home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think a lot of families\u2014and this is true in our family\u2014a lot of families spend Christmas with their nuclear family. Our kids all spend Christmas with their kids in their various locations around the country. Because none of our children live at home\u2014they all live in different states\u2014Thanksgiving is the <em>easiest<\/em> time for them to come home. They don\u2019t have to bring packages \/ they don\u2019t have to bring snowsuits, because it\u2019s not that cold yet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThanksgiving is much less encumbered. It\u2019s easier to gather together as a family\u2014and play games, and visit, and conversation\u2014without the complexity of gifts and all of the things that are associated with Christmas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tracy, you\u2019re in the middle\u2014with your own children but, also, with extended family and parents\u2014what\u2019s typical for your family at Thanksgiving?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tracy:<\/strong> What\u2019s really fun is that, even though we have two young kids now, at Thanksgiving, it\u2019s the one holiday where we still do what I did when I grew up\u2014so, we still travel\u2014Matt and I pack up our little girls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Over the river and through the woods?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tracy:<\/strong> We do! And we sing that song too. [Laughter] We drive about six hours to western Oklahoma, and we visit my grandmother. She just turned 90 in September, and we still all go there every Thanksgiving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; but aren\u2019t there times in late November when you go: \u201cLet\u2019s\u2014we should just cancel it this year. I mean, there\u2019s so much going on, and it\u2019s a six-hour trip. The weather may be bad,\u201d\u2014all of that! Have you had those thoughts?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tracy:<\/strong> We have; and that\u2019s when my five-year-old Audrey says: \u201cBut, Mama! We have to go to Nanaw\u2019s house!\u201d And that\u2019s when I remember why we do it, because that was me when I was a little girl: \u201cBut, mama, we\u2019re going to Nanaw\u2019s house; aren\u2019t we?\u201d And now\u2014just to see that we\u2019re passing that on to my girls \/ that\u2019s what we want to do\u2014just that legacy of gathering together, and the importance of celebrating, and honoring my grandma.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I just want to throw out something, as folks think about heading home for the holidays over Thanksgiving, because it\u2019s not cluttered with a lot of materialism\u2014there\u2019s not nearly as much commercialism around Thanksgiving. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d like to challenge every dad \/ every mom, who\u2019s listening to this broadcast\u2014and maybe a kid or two\u2014to, when you head home or as you host your family coming home, decide what you\u2019re going to do: \u201cWhat\u2019s going to be the focus of the Thanksgiving?\u201d\u2014just one big idea. Maybe it\u2019s to spend time honoring \u201cNana,\u201d or \u201cPapa,\u201d or grandma for the role she\u2019s played in the family\u2014give her tributes \/ give her honor\u2014take letters back and read them back to her\u2014but go on purpose. Take a little something with you and give some gifts this Thanksgiving season that, perhaps, you\u2019ve never given in the past. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, one of the things that I would suggest, in light of what you just said, is for families to try the \u201cUntie Your Story\u201d product that we\u2019ve created at Ever Thine Home. It\u2019s a spool of ribbon, and the ribbon has questions printed on it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a great way to have meaningful conversation with people who are the most important people in your life. It\u2019s so <em>easy<\/em> to have trivial conversations about the football games, or the weather, or whatever\u2014politics \/ things that we can talk about at any time of the year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut when we\u2019re gathered together with the people who mean the most to us\u2014which, again, as we talked about earlier, is a picture of God gathering His family together\u2014so when your family gathers together, take something like this with you and have a conversation that you\u2019ll never forget with aunts and uncles, and cousins, and grandmothers\u2014even your own family \/ your own husband, or your own wife, or one of your kids\u2014you might learn something about them that you didn\u2019t know by answering these questions around the table.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This spool that I\u2019ve got is called \u201cUntie Your Story: Memories.\u201d It has\u2014it says, \u201cTwelve napkin ribbons; twelve engaging questions.\u201d So, you actually pull this off the spool\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014pull out a pair of scissors, and cut them into 12 individual napkin ties.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And then place them around the table, and go around the table and let people answer them; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; and we\u2019ve done it with our kids. We had so much fun with one of these questions at Thanksgiving a year or two ago. One of the questions says, \u201cTell about your favorite teacher in school and why.\u201d [Laughter] My kids \/ our kids started talking about some of their favorite teachers. We never got to any of the other questions, because we had so much fun laughing about their memories of different teachers that they had. I remembered who those teachers were, and they all remembered because some of them had the same teachers. They would say, \u201cDo you remember how Mrs. So-and-so did this?!\u201d \u201cDo you remember this?\u201d It was really, really fun. We laughed so hard for about two hours, just about that one question.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are other questions on there that are maybe more meaningful, but the point is that you\u2019ll have conversations that you\u2019ll never forget. That\u2019s what we all long for as families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The purpose here is to make sure that your time has some meaning \/ has some intentionality\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that it\u2019s not just squandered. When you get the family together, one of the things you want to do is create some memories. You want to drive memory markers into the fabric of your family; but you\u2019re also wanting to make sure that you\u2019re having focused conversations on things that are eternally important, not just things that are casually important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I do think\u2014I mean, having a conversation about who your favorite teacher was\u2014those are fun conversations to have, and there\u2019s laughter, and all of that. But there\u2019s also an opportunity to talk about: \u201cWhat was it about that person\u2019s character?\u201d or \u201cWhat was it about what they taught you?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cHow did you see Jesus in them?\u201d that can really bring the whole thing back to where it belongs, which is thanks to God for His care in your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And, if you haven\u2019t read Psalm 100 recently, I just want to read it to you; because this is a great Psalm to think about as you enter the Thanksgiving holiday. This really talks about being intentional. Psalm 100, verse 1:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMake a joyful noise to the\u00a0Lord, all the earth!<br>Serve the\u00a0Lord\u00a0with gladness!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCome into his presence with singing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKnow that\u00a0the\u00a0Lord, he is God!<br>It is he who\u00a0made us, and\u00a0we are his;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are his\u00a0people, and\u00a0the sheep of his pasture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow listen to these two concluding verses:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEnter his gates with thanksgiving<br>And his\u00a0courts with praise!<br>Give thanks to him;\u00a0bless his name!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor the\u00a0Lord\u00a0is good; <br>His steadfast love endures forever,<br>And his\u00a0faithfulness to all generations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s speaking to families\u2014families need to celebrate who God is and give thanks, looking back over the past year, for what He\u2019s done in your individual lives and in your family. There may be some great stories that need to be told, that no one knows anything about, all because you entered His gates with thanksgiving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t13:00\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob: And, by the way, if you go to a church\u2014and it\u2019s been more than five years since they\u2019ve sung the 100th Psalm\u2014you know that one, too; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTracy: Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob: \u201cAll people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord a cheerful song.\u201d Then go to your worship pastor and say: \u201cCould we sing this? This is an old favorite of mine.\u201d Then just nudge him a little bit; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTracy: Or, you could just go to Nanaw\u2019s house. My grandma\u2014who, as I said, just turned 90\u2014we\u2019ll be there in a few weeks. She has her pump organ; so she gets her legs going\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara: Does she really?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob: Awesome!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTracy: Yes! Her voice isn\u2019t as good as it used to be; but she makes us sing those songs still, to this day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you were talking about\u2014His faithfulness goes on through all generations\u2014my daughter asked me, not long ago, \u201cMommy, how did you know to tell me about Jesus?\u201d It was just the sweetest thing, because what I got to tell her is, \u201cWell, my mommy told me; and her mommy told her\u2014and that\u2019s Nanaw.\u201d So we still go and celebrate Nanaw, who\u2019s the matriarch of our family, and has passed on God\u2019s faithfulness to all of these generations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; I just need to ask you guys: \u201cWhat do you do if the family dynamic is not the happy family that we\u2019re talking about here?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, Bob! I want to answer that! You still do it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tracy:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen when you ask a meaningful question that forces people to think. I know of a guy, who actually stepped out and did this with his family. He brought a relative to his home for Thanksgiving\u2014and he thought, \u201cThis is a gamble.\u201d They went around the table, and did \u201cUntie Your Story,\u201d and reflected back on their memories. At the end of the dinner, as the relative was walking to the car, he said, \u201cThis has been the best Thanksgiving I can recall in my life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I think we have this idealized image of what Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and other holidays look like; because we want them to be happy \/ we want them to be meaningful. We want them to be something where everyone goes home and says: \u201cThat was so great! I can\u2019t wait until next year.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the reality is\u2014we\u2019re all sinful people. The reality is\u2014kids are going to be unhappy; Aunt So-and-so\u2019s not going to be pleased with the way the casserole was made, because it wasn\u2019t made her way; whatever it is. Or you might have someone who\u2019s sick. I remember, a couple of years ago\u2014because we always gather at my mother\u2019s house for Thanksgiving. One year, we were all there; and one of my nephews got sick. It went to two or three people after him\u2014within 24 hours, we had a whole bunch of people sick. I mean, it was <em>bad <\/em>sick too!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you know\u2014it is life! It\u2019s just the way it is. You\u2019re going to have those people who are unhappy people, or the kids who are unhappy, or someone who\u2019s sick; and that\u2019s just a part of it. It\u2019s also a part of the memory, because we\u2019ve never forgotten that Thanksgiving when half of us got sick. [Laughter] But it is a part of being intentional. As you said, Dennis, we intentionally get together; because we love one another and we\u2019re committed to one another in family, even if we\u2019re not always happy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the bottom line\u2014is that we\u2019ve chosen to be together, because we are committed. It doesn\u2019t matter\u2014we\u2019re not going to stop going just because it\u2019s not perfect.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Some people are thinking back to last Thanksgiving and going: \u201cIt got angry; it got scary; it got loud. We hated it! We drove home, saying, \u2018We\u2019re never golng back.\u2019\u201d What do you do in those moments?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, I think I would evaluate what made it get scary, and angry, and loud. Was it because last year was an election year, and everybody was talking about what had just happened?\u2014[Laughter]\u2014and people just got out of control? I mean, it could be that it was the topic of conversation. Maybe, what God wants you to do is to be the one to steer the conversation and direct the time together so that it\u2019s intentionally focused on things that will be meaningful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I do think if you go home \/ go to the gathering with the intention: \u201cI\u2019m here to bless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m here to love. I\u2019m here, in the midst of the disruption, to turn the conversation in a different direction\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cto affirm \/ to say positive things\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cto point out the things I see in my relatives that I can\u2014that are praise-worthy \/ to give thanks for them.\u201d You can go into it with the right mindset; and at the end of the time, you can say: \u201cYou know what? Mission accomplished. I came to do what God would have me do, which is to love and to be an agent of grace in the midst of this place.\u201d Maybe it gets hurtful for some reason; but you just remember that you\u2019re there, first of all, to please the Lord and minister to the folks that God\u2019s given you to minister to at this holiday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tracy:<\/strong> I think it goes back to what you said in the beginning, Barbara\u2014gathering is not our idea; it\u2019s not something we came up with; it\u2019s not a consumeristic thing\u2014it\u2019s God! He\u2019s the One who is that example for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe gathers us as His children. If that\u2019s something that He does; and we can imitate Him in that way, it\u2019s worth doing. We can ask His Holy Spirit to empower us to do what we need to do in loving our families well and getting them together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; and God doesn\u2019t wait to gather us until we\u2019re perfect; He gathers us when we\u2019re imperfect. He loves us when we\u2019re sinful, and when we\u2019re not happy, and when we\u2019re not obeying, even. I think He\u2014it\u2019s a great reminder to remember that God calls us to imitate Him and to love, even when we\u2019re not loved in return.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Romans 5:8 says, \u201cWhile we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014\u201csinners.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> God\u2019s love was demonstrated when we were still His enemies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So Christ-likeness is demonstrating love, even if they\u2019re still enemies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to read here\u2014can I read this? This is the last verse of our hymn; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tracy:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So in the hymn, <em>Come, Ye Thankful People, Come<\/em>, the first verse is calling everybody to come for thanksgiving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second verse is all about how the harvest season is a picture of the spiritual harvest that God is engaged in. The third verse is a verse that says there is going to be a day of harvest coming when God will gather all His children in. And then the last verse is this: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven so, Lord, quickly come,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBring Thy final harvest home;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGather Thou Thy people in,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFree from sorrow, free from sin,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere forever purified,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Thy garner to abide;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCome with all Thine angels come,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRaise the glorious harvest home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Amen!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Pretty good; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> <em>Really <\/em>good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; and if they\u2019re not singing it at your church this Thanksgiving\u2014[Laughter] No; I\u2019m done; okay? That\u2019s all!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, Jesus said in John 14:3\u2014just to kind of finish this up\u2014He said: \u201cBehold, I go to prepare a place for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI will come again, and I will gather you to Myself.\u201d The gathering you\u2019re singing about, Bob, is when time will end. We\u2019ll all stand before God; and we will be truly in His courts, experiencing thanksgiving in person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to encourage families: \u201cThis Thanksgiving\u2014be intentional\u201d; would you? And one last thought: \u201cTake a family picture \/ get a picture of your family; and then blow it up for all of the families that are represented there, and send it to them as a gift.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was standing in front of the gallery in our kitchen. I wish you all could come to our kitchen and see how Barbara has created a little bit of a\u2014I don\u2019t even know how to describe it\u2014it\u2019s like a photo gallery of our grandkids \/ all of the families\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014of her family and the extended family that gathers together every Thanksgiving. I just was standing there, looking at it. It\u2019s amazing\u2014just looking at a picture and going: \u201cMan, Grandma\u2019s hanging in there\u2014almost 92! Man, she\u2019s in a lot of pain, but look at her\u2014she\u2019s loving it! She\u2019s surrounded by her family, gathered together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBe intentional about it this year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; and if we\u2019re going to be intentional, we\u2019ve got to make our relationships, as a family, a priority \/ make them central.
