Now I don\u2019t think we should have a long list of convictions\u2014if that\u2019s the way we\u2019re defining it\u2014because life is precious. Life is not something that you flippantly give up for anything. But the problem with most people out there is not that their list is too long\u2014it\u2019s that there\u2019s nothing on it. You know, they don\u2019t want to inconvenience themselves. Thanks for joining us on the Friday edition.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things we\u2019ve been doing this year is spending a little time reflecting on the last quarter-century\u2014because a quarter-century\u2019s a long time. We\u2019ve been doing this for a long time, haven\u2019t we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Ancient!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Time flies when you\u2019re having fun. [Laughter] And it drags sometimes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There have been those days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, there have been. No doubt about it. We just want to say thanks to the listeners\u2014first of all for listening and applying what we share here. I think it\u2019s been a healthy 25 years, Bob. So we\u2019re going to hear from some guys who understand what masculinity\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You left me off the list!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I left you off because we hear from you every day!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m just glad I made the list!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When Rick Philips was here, we were talking about\u2014and what we\u2019re talking about this week is the whole issue of masculinity and understand what it is that God has designed us for as men\u2014that\u2019s been a theme we\u2019ve come back to over and over again\u2014and Rick Philips, who\u2019s a pastor in South Carolina, wrote a book called <em>The Masculine Mandate<\/em>, and he explained that there are a lot of young men today who just aren\u2019t sure what they\u2019re supposed to do or be as men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick: <\/strong>I\u2019m reading a sports magazine and I read a story\u2014it was actually ESPN, the magazine, and they\u2019re telling the story of Brian Deegan. Do you guys know who Brian Deegan is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick: <\/strong>He is the Michael Jordan of Moto X. This is that x-game sport where they flip the motorcycles and do all those terrifying things. He forms a Moto X group called \u201cThe Metal Militia.\u201d It\u2019s all Nazi tattoos and it\u2019s mayhem and violence. Well, three things happened in Brian Deegan\u2019s life. One is he\u2019s filming a commercial and he\u2019s doing this death-defying leap, and he crashes, and virtually kills himself. His handlebars go through several organs, he loses as much blood as you can lose and still live.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPrior to that he\u2019d gotten his girlfriend pregnant, and she had gone home, and when she was home to have the baby, her friends took her to an evangelical church. Sure enough, they weren\u2019t mean people who were judgmental. They loved her, they led her to Christ. So when Deegan is injured, he goes to be with his girlfriend, and she takes him to church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd he comes to faith in Jesus Christ. So that combination of events happens\u2014and by the time I read this article this hooligan hero of the Moto X scene has become a Christian. Boy, isn\u2019t the new birth wonderful? Because he comes back with a great boldness, and this ESPN magazine tells the story of him doing Bible studies in the Metal Militia and leading them to Christ one by one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen the interview concludes with them saying to him, \u201cWhat\u2019s going on in your life now?\u201d Here\u2019s where I\u2019m going, because he has this little baby girl, now\u2014in his lap\u2014and he says, \u201cDude, now I have to figure out how to be a man,\u201d or words to that effect. \u201cI have to be a father\u2014I have to be a man that she\u2019ll look up to.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought to myself, \u201cThis guy needs biblical instruction.\u201d How many guys are there like this, who need biblical truth coming out of all the confusion of our culture for what men\u2014and a guy like this, Nazi tattoos, drunkenness, drugs, women, and all that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s a believer in Christ now, and here\u2019s the question: Will the Bible give a clear, simple, powerful answer to the question, \u201cDude, how do I become a man?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Again, that\u2019s Rick Philips, and a great story, huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It really is. I was thinking back to when the doctor placed our firstborn, Ashley, into my arms, and I began to ask the question, \u201cWhat do you do with this?\u201d You know, \u201cWhat does this mean?\u201d I didn\u2019t have the foggiest idea how she, along with her other three sisters and two brothers, would assist Barbara in helping me find out how to become a man and finish the process of growing up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and trying to embrace and understand our masculinity apart from Christ, that\u2019s a challenge when we know Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s still a challenge.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s still a challenge, but now we have a frame of reference; don\u2019t we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We do\u2014and we have the Scriptures that can give us those wheel alignments and adjustments in our lives and point out to us when we\u2019ve stepped over the line, which men do occasionally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You talked about this. In fact, it\u2019s one of the things you\u2019ve talked about many times on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014the steps to manhood that you outlined in your book <em>Stepping Up<\/em>. Just run through those five steps.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, the first one is boyhood, and it\u2019s where we start out, obviously. That becomes the next step of adolescence. Then you step away from boyhood and adolescence and turn your back on them and step up to manhood, but there are two other steps, Bob, where I believe the real payoff is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next one is the mentor step. That\u2019s where you take responsibility for impacting another young man\u2019s life in terms of what you\u2019ve learned about Jesus Christ. Then the final step\u2014which is patriarch\u2014which is the influence step without having to have the authority in your life that maybe you had in the earlier years. It\u2019s the payoff step, and I think men lose sight of a vision for manhood today because they don\u2019t have the sight of becoming a patriarch someday\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that can be a gentle, gracious, loving, firm believer in Jesus Christ, guiding the next generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>As you talk about those five steps, one of the things you\u2019ve said over the years is that a lot of guys find themselves stuck between one step and another, and we\u2019re going to hear you talking about that from a message that you gave a number of years ago. I think this is really profound.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now I have to confess to you that for the first few years of our marriage I would have to say I straddled these two steps. I was not fully turning and facing upward toward the next step. I would have to say I was part teenager and part man. Part teenager in that I wanted my way\u2014part teenager in still being passive\u2014not caring for my wife\u2019s needs, but being lazy on Saturday. You\u2019ve heard me describe myself as a giant amoeba on Saturday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTurning on the TV, watching the game of the week, feeling like that was my right as a \u201cman.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI believe our churches and our ministries are full of young men who are just like I was. They are young men who have one foot on adolescence and one foot on manhood, and they have not turned from the lust, the selfishness, the passivity, the rebellion of the teenage years to become what God called them to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was sharing this material, a guy who runs Asher Auto Salvage\u2014his name is Pod Buoy\u2014Pod came to me and he said, \u201cTwo times this week, Dennis, I stepped up from being a teenager to being a man.\u201d He said, \u201cCan you believe it? I\u2019m 63 years old and I\u2019m still struggling with being an adolescent.\u201d And he grinned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the men\u2014when we led Men\u2019s Fraternity\u2014one of the mornings came and stood on this adolescent step, and he said, \u201cFor a number of years I treated my wife like she was a possession, yet ultimately ended in a divorce with two sons who were left in the wake of that divorce.\u201d He said, \u201cBut God has convicted me of my selfishness and my sin,\u201d and he said, \u201cTomorrow night we\u2019re getting remarried, and I\u2019m stepping up to not only become a man, but I\u2019m also stepping up to something greater,\u201d and I\u2019ll share that with you in a minute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think just having those three steps outlined for men today provide incredible direction. But the last two steps I believe are the crowning glory for men, and if we can lock our radar on these things and if we can begin to get them firmly in our mind that this is our call. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat guy who said he had been a teenager was remarrying his wife, they were going to get remarried, they were moving back in, said, \u201cI\u2019m stepping up to become the mentor my boys need me to be to help them step to maturity.\u201d He had this biggest grin on his face. About 35, 36 years old, and it was like, \u201cFinally, I understand what I\u2019m supposed to do as a man.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well again, that\u2019s Dennis Rainey talking about moving beyond adolescence into manhood\u2014and that\u2019s not a one-time event. That\u2019s a daily decision, isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It really is, and it\u2019s turning your back on the foolishness of boyhood and adolescence and it\u2019s embracing what God\u2019s called you to be\u2014whether it\u2019s a husband, a father, a grandfather, or just be the man He\u2019s called you to be in the assignment He has for you today\u2014but in all things being obedient to Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019ve had a chance to dialogue with a lot of guys about what it means for a man to be a man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the men we talked to about this is our friend Dr. Dan Allender, and he had an interesting perspective on what\u2019s at the heart of masculinity. Here\u2019s our conversation with Dan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What would you say is the essence of true, biblical, God-created manhood?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>I would say the simple phrase: A warrior servant. A man who\u2019s committed to engagement with war\u2014therefore he always leads. He leads to die first. That is the core of what leadership is\u2014it\u2019s the man who\u2019s willing to own the fact that in every problem in his marriage he is the first to own his own log. Even when it\u2019s clear that his wife is wrong in certain matters\u2014his part is to bear the bullet first\u2014and therefore to lead by sacrifice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I hear \u201cinitiation\u201d written all over that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Oh, it\u2019s a glorious sense of movement; isn\u2019t it? An initiation into the world. He is\u2014in one sense\u2014to trample the world down. That\u2019s what the word \u201crule and subdue\u201d means. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe idea of subduing that we talked about yesterday is the idea\u2014somehow\u2014of treading down a virgin forest\u2014making a mark by my existence. Now my wife is to follow behind me, but she\u2019s not to sort of toddle behind me\u2014she\u2019s also to be\u2014in one sense\u2014the navigator\u2014the one who brings truth to bear about what it is I\u2019m moving toward. If I don\u2019t have my wife with me, I\u2019m not going to move toward the very end of my life as to what it\u2019s meant to be\u2014and that is a reflection of the relationship of the Trinity. So, bottom line: my wife points me toward relationship\u2014which is the ultimate task I\u2019m to fulfill.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Again, that\u2019s Dr. Dan Allender. What a great picture of the complementary relationship between men and women and why men\u2014apart from women\u2014can be really dangerous\u2014and why women need men to be men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, and I just thinking of Barbara and how she\u2019d been that in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSpeaking the truth to me, encouraging, exhorting, correcting at points\u2014they\u2019re all a part of what I think God has used in my life along with the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit to help me become the man God created me to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, and Dan talked about being the first to take the bullet\u2014being ready to die. There is something about masculinity that calls us to be ready to sacrifice at whatever level we\u2019re called to sacrifice; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I know a dad who had four daughters, and he had a couple of young men who showed up at his house wanting to date a couple of his daughters. So he said, \u201cI need to have a conversation with you first. You\u2019re going to take my daughters to the prom, so I just want you to know what I expect of you. If a group of terrorists were to break into the place where you\u2019re having your party, I expect you to take a bullet.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI bet those young men will never, ever forget being called up by a dad to say, \u201cI want you to protect my daughter. Protect her physically, protect her innocence, her dignity\u2014\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What you\u2019re talking about his convictions and courage, and this is something that our friend Dr. Tim Kimmel talked about when he was a guest on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014the need for men to be men of conviction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Men of honor are men who hold to their convictions. Let me define a conviction for you\u2014I define a conviction as what you\u2019re willing to die for. Now I don\u2019t think we should have a long list of convictions\u2014if that\u2019s the way we\u2019re defining it\u2014because life is precious. Life is not something that you flippantly give up for anything. But the problem with most people out there is not that their list is too long\u2014it\u2019s that there\u2019s nothing on it. You know, they don\u2019t want to inconvenience themselves. But I think we do have to have convictions\u2014and when you challenge men to convictions they come through.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll give you a little laundry list of at least four things that I think are worth giving your life for: our faith, our family, our friends, and our freedom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think those are four things that deserve for us to be willing to give our lives for. The Bible says, \u201cGreater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, how would we know? How would our wife know? How would our children know that we would give our lives for them without hesitating? Well, it\u2019s simple\u2014are we willing to live for them every day? That\u2019s the litmus test\u2014because for most of us\u2014we\u2019ll never have to give our life; right? Most of us won\u2019t have to give our life for our friends or our freedom or our faith. But are we willing to reprioritize our lives and inconvenience our lives on behalf of these very things and live for them? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen they see that over and over again\u2014that Dad changes his schedule to make sure that he is there when they need him\u2014that we are willing to play hurt and do without for the best interests of someone else\u2014that\u2019s saying that they wouldn\u2019t hesitate if it came down to it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Again, that\u2019s Dr. Tim Kimmel. The whole issue of sacrifice is all over what it is for us to be men; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s what I was thinking as he was talking. I was thinking, \u201cHow will my wife\u2014how will my children\u2014know if I\u2019ve truly denied myself?\u201d They\u2019re going to see me give up some of my agenda, a good bit of my agenda if not\u2014on some days\u2014all of my agenda, to be able to take care of them and do what needs to be done there. That\u2019s not always convenient, Bob, and it\u2019s not always the natural response of my flesh\u2014to want to give it up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Can I tell you how I spent the Labor Day holiday? This was back several months ago. For years I\u2019ve said this\u2014I\u2019ve said, \u201cWe should hire somebody to come out and cut off those lower branches on our trees in the back yard.\u201d Mary Ann decided, \u201cNo, we shouldn\u2019t hire anybody\u2014we have a ladder, we have a saw, and we have some time on Labor Day weekend.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo Labor Day weekend was all about cutting branches off trees, and here\u2019s what I thought about it in the middle of it, as I was doing the work\u2014and you know, here I\u2019m griping about it, but I thought, \u201cI should have paid somebody to do this,\u201d and then I thought, \u201cNo\u2014you know what? I\u2019m loving my wife.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cI\u2019m not cutting limbs down\u2014I\u2019m loving Mary Ann.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, Dr. Robert Lewis helps us think clearly about what God\u2019s called us to as men, and I think as guys listen to him talk, there\u2019s just something in what he says that every man goes, \u201cThat\u2019s right. I feel that. I know that\u2019s true, and that\u2019s how I need to be living.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>The Bible says that a man and real manhood revolves around just two things. I want to make it as simple as possible. Here are the two things: It revolves around accepting the biblical responsibilities of manhood, and secondly\u2014courageously living these responsibilities out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst, he was given a will to obey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Genesis God gave Adam specific commands to follow. He was not on his own\u2014he was a man under authority. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, he was a given a woman to love\u2014because the word of God had been given to him\u2014love her, protect her, and share the Scriptures with her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThirdly, he was given a work to do. At least it started with the garden. It probably would have gone bigger than that, but that was his first assignment. He had a work that he was gifted for. And finally, he had a world to better. He was told to rule and subdue the whole earth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo right there in the opening pages of the Scripture\u2014here is God commissioning this first man\u2014that we are like\u2014into the world and telling him, \u201cThis is how you can be a real man\u2014by obeying and accepting these four responsibilities.\u201d If I\u2019m going to embrace these\u2014I have to embrace these with passion. They become four points on the compass\u2014every day when I get up, here\u2019s my compass. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you know what my compass tells me for today? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy compass tells me today that I need to know God\u2019s Word and live it. That\u2019s true north. East is I have a woman that I need to love and lead. Now if I\u2019m a single guy, it\u2019s in my dating life. It doesn\u2019t start just with marriage. I want to set standards in our relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have a work to do\u2014I don\u2019t know where it\u2019s going to be for you\u2014we all have different gifts, but when I walk into the office I need to work hard and honorably, and create a name for myself. That\u2019s what I told my son. The Proverbs say, \u201cHe who works hard will stand before kings.\u201d I have a community to better. There are things beyond my workplace and home that need my gifting, because I\u2019m commissioned to change the world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well again, that\u2019s Dr. Robert Lewis, charging us to be the men God\u2019s called us to be. You have a final charge for guys today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I just was thinking of King David, who charged his son, \u201cShow yourself to be a man.\u201d I think we need more dads to look their sons in the face\u2014eye to eye, chest to chest\u2014and say, \u201cSon, let\u2019s be a man.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If the dad\u2019s going to do that he has to step up himself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It means he has to do it as well, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I do think our words\u2014not used to condemn or shame but to actually invite\u2014invite them to step out of immaturity, foolishness, boyhood, and into the payoff of being who God made you to be. Genesis one makes it clear, \u201cMale and female created He them.\u201d In the image of God He created you\u2014and that means there are some distinct responsibilities for men that a man needs to embrace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis foolishness today of homogenizing the sexes and blending them together where there are no distinctives of any kind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t think it celebrates the design of God and how He made men and women different. You can see it physically, and you can also see it in other ways as well in the Scriptures.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and it does not put us on a healthy trajectory as a culture if we\u2019re seeing manhood and womanhood as interchangeable and gender as fluid. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d just encourage guys\u2014if they\u2019ve not read your book <em>Stepping Up<\/em>\u2014we have copies of the book in our <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> Resource Center. This would be great for you to read a chapter a day\u2014or you can go through this with a group of guys. In fact, the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video series would be a great resource for a group of men to go through together, or fathers and teenage sons. Thanks for joining us on the Friday edition.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things we\u2019ve been doing this year is spending a little time reflecting on the last quarter-century\u2014because a quarter-century\u2019s a long time. We\u2019ve been doing this for a long time, haven\u2019t we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Ancient!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Time flies when you\u2019re having fun. [Laughter] And it drags sometimes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There have been those days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, there have been. No doubt about it. We just want to say thanks to the listeners\u2014first of all for listening and applying what we share here. We try to bring you the truth from the blueprints of Scripture to apply to your relationship with God, your spouse, your kids, and beyond that to your world. I think it\u2019s been a healthy 25 years, Bob. We\u2019ve learned a few things as we\u2019ve been mentored by the guests we\u2019ve had here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, and I look at the lineup today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust tell them who\u2019s going to be on here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019re hearing from people who have been guests with us over the last quarter-century, and we\u2019re just going back and kind of reflecting on some of the profound things folks had to say, like Rick Philips and Dan Allender and Tim Kimmel and Robert Lewis. So we\u2019re going to hear from some guys who understand what masculinity\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You left me off the list!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I left you off because we hear from you every day!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m just glad I made the list!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When Rick Philips was here, we were talking about\u2014and what we\u2019re talking about this week is the whole issue of masculinity and understand what it is that God has designed us for as men\u2014that\u2019s been a theme we\u2019ve come back to over and over again\u2014and Rick Philips, who\u2019s a pastor in South Carolina, wrote a book called <em>The Masculine Mandate<\/em>, and he explained that there are a lot of young men today who just aren\u2019t sure what they\u2019re supposed to do or be as men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick: <\/strong>I\u2019m reading a sports magazine and I read a story\u2014it was actually ESPN, the magazine, and they\u2019re telling the story of Brian Deegan. Do you guys know who Brian Deegan is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick: <\/strong>He is the Michael Jordan of Moto X. This is that x-game sport where they flip the motorcycles and do all those terrifying things. He forms a Moto X group called \u201cThe Metal Militia.\u201d It\u2019s all Nazi tattoos and it\u2019s mayhem and violence. Well, three things happened in Brian Deegan\u2019s life. One is he\u2019s filming a commercial and he\u2019s doing this death-defying leap, and he crashes, and virtually kills himself. His handlebars go through several organs, he loses as much blood as you can lose and still live.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPrior to that he\u2019d gotten his girlfriend pregnant, and she had gone home, and when she was home to have the baby, her friends took her to an evangelical church. Sure enough, they weren\u2019t mean people who were judgmental. They loved her, they led her to Christ. So when Deegan is injured, he goes to be with his girlfriend, and she takes him to church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd he comes to faith in Jesus Christ. So that combination of events happens\u2014and by the time I read this article this hooligan hero of the Moto X scene has become a Christian. Boy, isn\u2019t the new birth wonderful? Because he comes back with a great boldness, and this ESPN magazine tells the story of him doing Bible studies in the Metal Militia and leading them to Christ one by one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen the interview concludes with them saying to him, \u201cWhat\u2019s going on in your life now?\u201d Here\u2019s where I\u2019m going, because he has this little baby girl, now\u2014in his lap\u2014and he says, \u201cDude, now I have to figure out how to be a man,\u201d or words to that effect. \u201cI have to be a father\u2014I have to be a man that she\u2019ll look up to.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought to myself, \u201cThis guy needs biblical instruction.\u201d How many guys are there like this, who need biblical truth coming out of all the confusion of our culture for what men\u2014and a guy like this, Nazi tattoos, drunkenness, drugs, women, and all that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s a believer in Christ now, and here\u2019s the question: Will the Bible give a clear, simple, powerful answer to the question, \u201cDude, how do I become a man?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Again, that\u2019s Rick Philips, and a great story, huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It really is. I was thinking back to when the doctor placed our firstborn, Ashley, into my arms, and I began to ask the question, \u201cWhat do you do with this?\u201d You know, \u201cWhat does this mean?\u201d I didn\u2019t have the foggiest idea how she, along with her other three sisters and two brothers, would assist Barbara in helping me find out how to become a man and finish the process of growing up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and trying to embrace and understand our masculinity apart from Christ, that\u2019s a challenge when we know Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s still a challenge.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s still a challenge, but now we have a frame of reference; don\u2019t we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We do\u2014and we have the Scriptures that can give us those wheel alignments and adjustments in our lives and point out to us when we\u2019ve stepped over the line, which men do occasionally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You talked about this. In fact, it\u2019s one of the things you\u2019ve talked about many times on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014the steps to manhood that you outlined in your book <em>Stepping Up<\/em>. Just run through those five steps.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, the first one is boyhood, and it\u2019s where we start out, obviously. That becomes the next step of adolescence. Then you step away from boyhood and adolescence and turn your back on them and step up to manhood, but there are two other steps, Bob, where I believe the real payoff is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next one is the mentor step. That\u2019s where you take responsibility for impacting another young man\u2019s life in terms of what you\u2019ve learned about Jesus Christ. Then the final step\u2014which is patriarch\u2014which is the influence step without having to have the authority in your life that maybe you had in the earlier years. It\u2019s the payoff step, and I think men lose sight of a vision for manhood today because they don\u2019t have the sight of becoming a patriarch someday\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that can be a gentle, gracious, loving, firm believer in Jesus Christ, guiding the next generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>As you talk about those five steps, one of the things you\u2019ve said over the years is that a lot of guys find themselves stuck between one step and another, and we\u2019re going to hear you talking about that from a message that you gave a number of years ago. I think this is really profound.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now I have to confess to you that for the first few years of our marriage I would have to say I straddled these two steps. I was not fully turning and facing upward toward the next step. I would have to say I was part teenager and part man. Part teenager in that I wanted my way\u2014part teenager in still being passive\u2014not caring for my wife\u2019s needs, but being lazy on Saturday. You\u2019ve heard me describe myself as a giant amoeba on Saturday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTurning on the TV, watching the game of the week, feeling like that was my right as a \u201cman.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI believe our churches and our ministries are full of young men who are just like I was. They are young men who have one foot on adolescence and one foot on manhood, and they have not turned from the lust, the selfishness, the passivity, the rebellion of the teenage years to become what God called them to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was sharing this material, a guy who runs Asher Auto Salvage\u2014his name is Pod Buoy\u2014Pod came to me and he said, \u201cTwo times this week, Dennis, I stepped up from being a teenager to being a man.\u201d He said, \u201cCan you believe it? I\u2019m 63 years old and I\u2019m still struggling with being an adolescent.\u201d And he grinned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the men\u2014when we led Men\u2019s Fraternity\u2014one of the mornings came and stood on this adolescent step, and he said, \u201cFor a number of years I treated my wife like she was a possession, yet ultimately ended in a divorce with two sons who were left in the wake of that divorce.\u201d He said, \u201cBut God has convicted me of my selfishness and my sin,\u201d and he said, \u201cTomorrow night we\u2019re getting remarried, and I\u2019m stepping up to not only become a man, but I\u2019m also stepping up to something greater,\u201d and I\u2019ll share that with you in a minute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think just having those three steps outlined for men today provide incredible direction. But the last two steps I believe are the crowning glory for men, and if we can lock our radar on these things and if we can begin to get them firmly in our mind that this is our call. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat guy who said he had been a teenager was remarrying his wife, they were going to get remarried, they were moving back in, said, \u201cI\u2019m stepping up to become the mentor my boys need me to be to help them step to maturity.\u201d He had this biggest grin on his face. About 35, 36 years old, and it was like, \u201cFinally, I understand what I\u2019m supposed to do as a man.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well again, that\u2019s Dennis Rainey talking about moving beyond adolescence into manhood\u2014and that\u2019s not a one-time event. That\u2019s a daily decision, isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It really is, and it\u2019s turning your back on the foolishness of boyhood and adolescence and it\u2019s embracing what God\u2019s called you to be\u2014whether it\u2019s a husband, a father, a grandfather, or just be the man He\u2019s called you to be in the assignment He has for you today\u2014but in all things being obedient to Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019ve had a chance to dialogue with a lot of guys about what it means for a man to be a man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the men we talked to about this is our friend Dr. Dan Allender, and he had an interesting perspective on what\u2019s at the heart of masculinity. Here\u2019s our conversation with Dan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What would you say is the essence of true, biblical, God-created manhood?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>I would say the simple phrase: A warrior servant. A man who\u2019s committed to engagement with war\u2014therefore he always leads. He leads to die first. That is the core of what leadership is\u2014it\u2019s the man who\u2019s willing to own the fact that in every problem in his marriage he is the first to own his own log. Even when it\u2019s clear that his wife is wrong in certain matters\u2014his part is to bear the bullet first\u2014and therefore to lead by sacrifice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I hear \u201cinitiation\u201d written all over that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Oh, it\u2019s a glorious sense of movement; isn\u2019t it? An initiation into the world. He is\u2014in one sense\u2014to trample the world down. That\u2019s what the word \u201crule and subdue\u201d means. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe idea of subduing that we talked about yesterday is the idea\u2014somehow\u2014of treading down a virgin forest\u2014making a mark by my existence. Now my wife is to follow behind me, but she\u2019s not to sort of toddle behind me\u2014she\u2019s also to be\u2014in one sense\u2014the navigator\u2014the one who brings truth to bear about what it is I\u2019m moving toward. If I don\u2019t have my wife with me, I\u2019m not going to move toward the very end of my life as to what it\u2019s meant to be\u2014and that is a reflection of the relationship of the Trinity. So, bottom line: my wife points me toward relationship\u2014which is the ultimate task I\u2019m to fulfill.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Again, that\u2019s Dr. Dan Allender. What a great picture of the complementary relationship between men and women and why men\u2014apart from women\u2014can be really dangerous\u2014and why women need men to be men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, and I just thinking of Barbara and how she\u2019d been that in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSpeaking the truth to me, encouraging, exhorting, correcting at points\u2014they\u2019re all a part of what I think God has used in my life along with the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit to help me become the man God created me to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, and Dan talked about being the first to take the bullet\u2014being ready to die. There is something about masculinity that calls us to be ready to sacrifice at whatever level we\u2019re called to sacrifice; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I know a dad who had four daughters, and he had a couple of young men who showed up at his house wanting to date a couple of his daughters. So he said, \u201cI need to have a conversation with you first. You\u2019re going to take my daughters to the prom, so I just want you to know what I expect of you. If a group of terrorists were to break into the place where you\u2019re having your party, I expect you to take a bullet.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI bet those young men will never, ever forget being called up by a dad to say, \u201cI want you to protect my daughter. Protect her physically, protect her innocence, her dignity\u2014\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What you\u2019re talking about his convictions and courage, and this is something that our friend Dr. Tim Kimmel talked about when he was a guest on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014the need for men to be men of conviction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Men of honor are men who hold to their convictions. Let me define a conviction for you\u2014I define a conviction as what you\u2019re willing to die for. Now I don\u2019t think we should have a long list of convictions\u2014if that\u2019s the way we\u2019re defining it\u2014because life is precious. Life is not something that you flippantly give up for anything. But the problem with most people out there is not that their list is too long\u2014it\u2019s that there\u2019s nothing on it. You know, they don\u2019t want to inconvenience themselves. But I think we do have to have convictions\u2014and when you challenge men to convictions they come through.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll give you a little laundry list of at least four things that I think are worth giving your life for: our faith, our family, our friends, and our freedom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think those are four things that deserve for us to be willing to give our lives for. The Bible says, \u201cGreater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, how would we know? How would our wife know? How would our children know that we would give our lives for them without hesitating? Well, it\u2019s simple\u2014are we willing to live for them every day? That\u2019s the litmus test\u2014because for most of us\u2014we\u2019ll never have to give our life; right? Most of us won\u2019t have to give our life for our friends or our freedom or our faith. But are we willing to reprioritize our lives and inconvenience our lives on behalf of these very things and live for them? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen they see that over and over again\u2014that Dad changes his schedule to make sure that he is there when they need him\u2014that we are willing to play hurt and do without for the best interests of someone else\u2014that\u2019s saying that they wouldn\u2019t hesitate if it came down to it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Again, that\u2019s Dr. Tim Kimmel. The whole issue of sacrifice is all over what it is for us to be men; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s what I was thinking as he was talking. I was thinking, \u201cHow will my wife\u2014how will my children\u2014know if I\u2019ve truly denied myself?\u201d They\u2019re going to see me give up some of my agenda, a good bit of my agenda if not\u2014on some days\u2014all of my agenda, to be able to take care of them and do what needs to be done there. That\u2019s not always convenient, Bob, and it\u2019s not always the natural response of my flesh\u2014to want to give it up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Can I tell you how I spent the Labor Day holiday? This was back several months ago. For years I\u2019ve said this\u2014I\u2019ve said, \u201cWe should hire somebody to come out and cut off those lower branches on our trees in the back yard.\u201d Mary Ann decided, \u201cNo, we shouldn\u2019t hire anybody\u2014we have a ladder, we have a saw, and we have some time on Labor Day weekend.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo Labor Day weekend was all about cutting branches off trees, and here\u2019s what I thought about it in the middle of it, as I was doing the work\u2014and you know, here I\u2019m griping about it, but I thought, \u201cI should have paid somebody to do this,\u201d and then I thought, \u201cNo\u2014you know what? I\u2019m loving my wife.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cI\u2019m not cutting limbs down\u2014I\u2019m loving Mary Ann.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, Dr. Robert Lewis helps us think clearly about what God\u2019s called us to as men, and I think as guys listen to him talk, there\u2019s just something in what he says that every man goes, \u201cThat\u2019s right. I feel that. I know that\u2019s true, and that\u2019s how I need to be living.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>The Bible says that a man and real manhood revolves around just two things. I want to make it as simple as possible. Here are the two things: It revolves around accepting the biblical responsibilities of manhood, and secondly\u2014courageously living these responsibilities out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst, he was given a will to obey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Genesis God gave Adam specific commands to follow. He was not on his own\u2014he was a man under authority. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, he was a given a woman to love\u2014because the word of God had been given to him\u2014love her, protect her, and share the Scriptures with her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThirdly, he was given a work to do. At least it started with the garden. It probably would have gone bigger than that, but that was his first assignment. He had a work that he was gifted for. And finally, he had a world to better. He was told to rule and subdue the whole earth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo right there in the opening pages of the Scripture\u2014here is God commissioning this first man\u2014that we are like\u2014into the world and telling him, \u201cThis is how you can be a real man\u2014by obeying and accepting these four responsibilities.\u201d If I\u2019m going to embrace these\u2014I have to embrace these with passion. They become four points on the compass\u2014every day when I get up, here\u2019s my compass. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you know what my compass tells me for today? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy compass tells me today that I need to know God\u2019s Word and live it. That\u2019s true north. East is I have a woman that I need to love and lead. Now if I\u2019m a single guy, it\u2019s in my dating life. It doesn\u2019t start just with marriage. I want to set standards in our relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have a work to do\u2014I don\u2019t know where it\u2019s going to be for you\u2014we all have different gifts, but when I walk into the office I need to work hard and honorably, and create a name for myself. That\u2019s what I told my son. The Proverbs say, \u201cHe who works hard will stand before kings.\u201d I have a community to better. There are things beyond my workplace and home that need my gifting, because I\u2019m commissioned to change the world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well again, that\u2019s Dr. Robert Lewis, charging us to be the men God\u2019s called us to be. You have a final charge for guys today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I just was thinking of King David, who charged his son, \u201cShow yourself to be a man.\u201d I think we need more dads to look their sons in the face\u2014eye to eye, chest to chest\u2014and say, \u201cSon, let\u2019s be a man.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If the dad\u2019s going to do that he has to step up himself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It means he has to do it as well, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I do think our words\u2014not used to condemn or shame but to actually invite\u2014invite them to step out of immaturity, foolishness, boyhood, and into the payoff of being who God made you to be. Genesis one makes it clear, \u201cMale and female created He them.\u201d In the image of God He created you\u2014and that means there are some distinct responsibilities for men that a man needs to embrace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis foolishness today of homogenizing the sexes and blending them together where there are no distinctives of any kind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t think it celebrates the design of God and how He made men and women different. You can see it physically, and you can also see it in other ways as well in the Scriptures.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and it does not put us on a healthy trajectory as a culture if we\u2019re seeing manhood and womanhood as interchangeable and gender as fluid. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d just encourage guys\u2014if they\u2019ve not read your book <em>Stepping Up<\/em>\u2014we have copies of the book in our <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> Resource Center. This would be great for you to read a chapter a day\u2014or you can go through this with a group of guys. In fact, the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video series would be a great resource for a group of men to go through together, or fathers and teenage sons.
