Here\u2019s Dave Harvey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> I think of a guy named\u2014I\u2019ll call him Tom. You know, he was raised in a Christian home \/ went to Christian school; but, in high school, just began to make foolish choices. His parents would be <em>accommodating<\/em> him at each step of the way, and so he was never able to experience the <em>effects<\/em> of his poor choices. That\u2019s a great example of a wayward person; and it\u2019s also an example of how, I think, people that love them accommodate their desires and protect them from the consequences of their choices.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, October 9<sup>th<\/sup>. We\u2019ve had occasion to talk a number of times here about the issue of parents with prodigal children, but it occurs to me that a prodigal is not always a child. There can be lots of prodigals in lots of relationships in our lives; can\u2019t there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are prodigal saints. We have a couple of pastors with us, who I have just an inkling of an idea that you guys got part of your passion for prodigals and for those who are struggling \/ those who are wayward as you wrote a book called <em>Letting Go: Rugged Love for Wayward Souls.<\/em> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDave Harvey and Paul Gilbert join us on <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>Welcome back, Dave; and Paul, welcome to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It\u2019s great to be back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> Thanks for having us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Paul is a pastor in Tallahassee at Four Oaks Community Church. Dave has gone south into Deep South Florida.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Naples.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Naples, Florida.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The church there is The Summit Church. Was I right about you guys first seeing this among Christians \/ among those who are in the church today\u2014where you got your passion for prodigals?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, I think we probably first got it in the experience of our own lives\u2014just living life\u2014having a family \/ having extended family\u2014seeing it touch people that we love\u2014and beginning to think about what this really represents\u2014what it represents to God \/ how we\u2019re supposed to position ourselves and love them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, you begin pastoring\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you begin walking through churches and you realize that you can\u2019t\u2014you can\u2019t throw a rock in any direction without hitting <em>somebody<\/em> that isn\u2019t <em>profoundly<\/em> affected by this topic. It may be somebody that\u2019s in their home, who is a prodigal \/ it may be somebody that they know who loves a prodigal; but <em>everybody<\/em> seems to be connected in some way to this topic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And, Paul, you\u2019re expanding the idea of prodigal. We typically think of it as a child who has become wayward,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014but there can be prodigals in all kinds of relationships.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> Oh, sure! We might think about somebody at church in our small group, who decides to leave their family, or a spouse who is discovered to have some sort of secret life. It can really extend to a variety of relationships beyond just the typical parent\/child. It\u2019s anyone who\u2019s straying\u2014anyone who is kind of rejecting the roles, and relationships, and the voices that God has put into their lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And the pain that is associated when a friend, a loved one, a spouse, [or] a child starts to wander \/ becomes wayward\u2014that\u2019s a unique kind of pain. I mean, we have pain in all kinds of relationships, but there\u2019s something deep and profound about somebody moving away from what is core to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> It can feel like you\u2019re losing a part of your body \/ one of your limbs. You keep looking down for that limb, and it\u2019s gone \/ it\u2019s absent. It\u2019s something that is haunting. It\u2019s an ongoing pain\u2014it\u2019s an acute pain \/ it\u2019s chronic. And so, as such, it\u2019s very hard to escape from it. In fact, you feel like you can\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, we live in this network of relationships, where there are all of these kinds of agreements, and codes, and implied covenants and arrangements, where we feel like we have a certain role \/ we act a certain way. When you have somebody, who you\u2019re close to that, all of a sudden, says: \u201cYou know what? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThat role that I\u2019ve had in your life\u2014I\u2019m going to reject that role. I\u2019m going to back away and reject <em>your<\/em> voice into my life.\u201d It\u2019s a <em>profoundly<\/em> unsettling experience, which goes all of the way down to that person\u2019s identity; because their whole world is shaken: \u201cWhat else can unravel if this can unravel?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I had a friend one time that I had lunch with, just to plead with him about a decision he\u2019d made to divorce his wife and leave his three daughters. I just remember the anguish I went through with a friend. Now, I had a good relationship with him; but later on, I went through that same experience with an extended family member. I\u2019m telling you\u2014the deeper the love, the greater the anguish. It\u2019s back to what you talked about, Paul\u2014feeling like you\u2019ve lost an arm or a leg. It\u2019s a dramatic hurt, because you really care about the person and want the best. You see them headed in a self-destructive way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And that\u2019s part of the importance of getting the word, prodigal, and expanding it out so that people understand that this is happening far beyond just what parents experience with kids. It happens with siblings; it happens in marriages; it happens to people that love another person as a friend; and they just see them spin out and embrace this narrative, where they are no longer responsible \/ they no longer have any kind of agency.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s funny\u2014I was just reading <em>Hillbilly Elegy, <\/em>by J.D. Vance\u2014it\u2019s a new book that\u2019s out. He was talking about the Hillbilly code and how there are two Hillbilly codes. One is embodied in the hard-working person, who will just always get it done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the other\u2014he told a story about being in a tile factory, where he had to work there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a man who was hired that had a pregnant wife\u2014who had a <em>great<\/em> job there \/ he had insurance; but the guy just wouldn\u2019t arrive at work on time. He would take breaks for an hour rather than just the regular fifteen-minute break. Eventually, the man was fired. What J.D. Vance was reflecting on was just how the man, when he would describe the problem, could never come to terms with his own sense of agency \/ his own sense of responsibility. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I read that, I thought, \u201cYou know, I think what we\u2019re talking about there is the core of waywardness.\u201d It goes all the way back to Genesis 3: \u201cIt\u2019s the woman You gave me, Lord.\u201d So it\u2019s not only \u201cnot my problem\u201d but \u201cIt\u2019s the woman\u2019s problem. And, as a matter of fact, Lord, You gave her to me\u2014so You are roped into this as well.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s that sense where people\u2014even people who say that they love Christ\u2014can sometimes come to a place where they\u2019ll reject the relationship that they have \/ they\u2019ll reject the role that they\u2019re in\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they\u2019ll say, \u201cYou know, I\u2019m no longer really responsible for those things.\u201d That can be <em>profoundly<\/em> unsettling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Paul, the seeds of waywardness are in all of us; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> Of course!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is not something that Christians are immune to or that good people are protected from, but any of us could wander this path at any moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> We\u2019re all born wayward. We have a disposition that wants to wander from God\u2014that does not want to acknowledge His authority, His rule, or His care in our lives. Of course, God pursues us through His Son, Jesus, through the gospel. So, we want to be careful here to say, \u201cWe\u2019re all wayward.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> You know, we\u2019re all in need of God\u2019s grace, and His mercy, and His forgiveness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe would distinguish between that and the fact that the wayward that we are talking about are those who seem to have found a home in their waywardness \/ they\u2019ve become entrenched. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey\u2019re not only comfortable there, but they feel like they have a <em>right<\/em> to remain there\u2014as [opposed to] someone, who\u2019s a believer, who\u2019s been indwelt with the Spirit of Christ, who knows they\u2019re wayward, trusts in the Lord\u2014wants to return to the Lord \/ wants to repent of their sin. The wayward person that we write about is one who doesn\u2019t even acknowledge that dynamic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So give me an example, from pastoral ministry that you\u2019ve done, where you\u2019ve been with somebody\u2014maybe either of you if you have an example\u2014you\u2019ve been with somebody, who\u2019s one of these entrenched wayward and: \u201cIt\u2019s just the way it is. You just need to adjust to it. This is who I am.\u201d Can you remember conversations you\u2019ve had like that with people?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> More than I would like to remember. I distinctly remember\u2014we\u2019ll call him Darren. There was this pastoral crisis. The wife, named Jennifer, had said, \u201cHe\u2019s leaving.\u201d It just came down to the point where he even acknowledged, \u201cI know this is not what God would want me to do, but I\u2019m going to do it; because I think my ultimate happiness is going to be found in pursuing this other relationship,\u201d or \u201c\u2026this other woman.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, sometimes, men or women won\u2019t even acknowledge that what they\u2019re doing is wrong; although, I think, intuitively, they <em>do <\/em>know. That\u2019s heartbreaking; because they have simply said, \u201cI think that my path to happiness and fulfillment\u2014I know that better than God knows and prescribes for me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Dave, when you\u2019ve got a guy like Darren, who says, \u201cI know this is wrong, but I\u2019m going to do it anyway,\u201d is there anything you can do with a guy like that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, I think the gospel speaks to situations like that; because I think there\u2019s a willful stubbornness that exists within all of us. You know, there\u2019s a point of continuity where, as Paul was saying, we\u2019re all wayward\u2014that\u2019s factory-installed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> So we can identify with the desire to just want to do our own thing and find a connection with him there; but then, you know, we have to be able to speak truth to that and help them to understand that there is a <em>path<\/em> that they\u2019re beginning to walk down that has <em>horrific<\/em> implications and has <em>incredibly<\/em> bad fruit attached to it; because, ultimately, what we\u2019re talking about is the path of the fool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re not talking about, you know, those sinful patterns, even, that you might fall into\u2014but you struggle back and forth and make a little bit of growth but, then, fall backwards\u2014we\u2019re talking about somebody, who is\u2014willfully, obstinately, in an entrenched manner\u2014electing to <em>disobey<\/em> what they know to be true in an effort to just move forward in a direction that <em>violates<\/em> everything they\u2019ve said in the past.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They\u2019re not saying [quoting <em>Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing<\/em>]: \u201cProne to wander, Lord, I feel it; Prone to leave the God I love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cHere\u2019s my heart; Take and seal it; Seal it for Thy courts above.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They\u2019re saying: \u201cProne to wander; I kind of like it! Get out of my way!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> They\u2019re saying: \u201cI love to wander, and I\u2019m wandering right now. That\u2019s where I\u2019m going \/ that\u2019s my destination.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think of a guy named\u2014I\u2019ll call him Tom. You know, he\u2019s professed Christ\u2014raised in a Christian home \/ went to Christian school\u2014but just, in high school, just began to make foolish choices. His parents would be <em>accommodating<\/em> him at each step of the way, and so he was never able to experience the <em>effects<\/em> of his poor choices. In each season, he just seemed to be <em>determined<\/em> to move <em>away<\/em> from God rather than toward God \/ away from what he grew up with rather than toward what he grew up with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s a great example of a wayward person; and it\u2019s also an example of how, I think, people that love them can be <em>so <\/em>tempted\u2014it\u2019s such a strong temptation\u2014to want to define love in a way that we accommodate their desires and protect them from the consequences of their choices.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And a big part of what you\u2019ve written in your book is: \u201cThat\u2019s not real love.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> That\u2019s not love at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I want to go back to my friend\u2014that I went and had lunch with in an attempt to appeal to him, \u201cDon\u2019t do this thing!\u201d I didn\u2019t come with stones in my hand to stone him for being this wandering friend. I came to him, appealing to him; to say: \u201cDon\u2019t do this to your wife \/ to your daughters. The trajectory of your life will not be good.\u201d And, yet, the reality was then\u2014and still remains today\u2014he really refused to hear the truth and also renounced his responsibilities.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you get somebody who doesn\u2019t want to hear the truth, and doesn\u2019t want to be responsible, that\u2019s a tough person to appeal to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It is. The good news is: \u201cThere\u2019s hope\u2014there\u2019s hope in Scripture.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are many people who God has reached out to and powerfully transformed, who have walked that road. But understanding the nature of that waywardness, and understanding how to actually care and actually love somebody in the reality that might speed them along the way toward the right kind of help is really an important part of them moving forward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I think you have to realize you\u2019re not responsible for that other person\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Which is <em>really <\/em>hard to come to terms with sometimes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Especially if it\u2019s your child that\u2019s the prodigal or if it\u2019s your spouse who is leaving you\u2014I mean, the depth of relationship\u2014you feel, like you said, like you\u2019re losing a limb: \u201cThis is a part of me!\u201d It\u2019s hard not to feel responsible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Part of the burden\u2014part of the shame, part of the wounds, the weight\u2014whether it\u2019s parents or anybody who loves a prodigal\u2014what they carry is a sense of \/ that sense of responsibility. It binds its way into their mind every day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it\u2019s not just the <em>worry<\/em> that they feel; but it\u2019s the <em>crushing<\/em> condemnation that\u2014somehow, in some way, that they\u2019re not completely aware\u2014they\u2019re responsible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And they caused it. I mean, a parent is set up to evaluate all of the mistakes he or she has made in raising a son or daughter, who has taken a wayward path. It\u2019s sure easy to condemn yourself in the midst of that. Speak to that person \/ that parent, who\u2019s feeling that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> A prodigal is a great opportunity to be able to say, \u201cYou know, I haven\u2019t been a perfect parent.\u201d If we\u2019re talking about a parent, there may be things that a child\u2019s prodigal behavior does reveal about the imperfections within the home and the imperfections within the parenting, but that kind of response\u2014the extremeness of that response\u2014isn\u2019t typically just that somebody hasn\u2019t been doing something. There\u2019s far more at work there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFolks that are living in that way need to really understand the gospel hope and gospel encouragement that can come to them so they can position themselves in a way to really care for and love that prodigal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I remember coming to terms with the idea that, as a parent, I felt like my child\u2019s behavior was all about me and my parenting\u2014that: \u201cIf I\u2019ve done the right things, they\u2019re going to behave the right way. If I\u2019ve done the wrong things, they\u2019re going to behave the wrong way.\u201d Then I started to think about me, as a child; and I thought: \u201cWell, now, wait! I didn\u2019t feel that way as a child. I felt like: \u2018I am the one making the decisions about these things. Sure, my parents influenced me in one way or another, for better or for worse; but ultimately, I make my own calls.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo when we can stop and think about the fact that our kids, even if they\u2019re making bad choices, they\u2019re aware that: \u201cThese are my choices. This is not Mom and Dad pushing me on the wrong path. This is the path I\u2019m choosing to go on.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Mom and Dad\u2014again, as you\u2019ve said\u2014we may have influenced it in some way, but the ultimate choice to become wayward is a choice that comes more from the sin nature inside of a person than it does from any external influence.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> Yes; Larry Osborn always talks about how, as parents, we do have great influence over our kids\u2014no one would argue with that\u2014but the one thing we do not have is ultimate control.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> And so, parents or spouses of wayward husbands\/wives\u2014what have you\u2014as they delve into the book \/ as they delve into their own personal situations\u2014absolutely, there\u2019s going to be introspection, there\u2019s going to be examining of the heart, examining of unhealthy patterns, but also recognizing that, you know, we just sow seed. God is the One who makes things <em>grow<\/em>. No matter what we do, we don\u2019t have control of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So here\u2019s my question: \u201cIf somebody is moving in a wayward direction\u2014a child, a spouse, somebody in our small group\u2014like you said, it can be any number\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cI have an initial impulse, which is to feel betrayed, to feel angry, [and] to be hurt by the choice that person\u2019s making. My initial impulse is not compassion for that person \/ it is not wanting to help. I feel more prophetic than I do wanting to care for their needs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow should I be feeling? How does Jesus feel about the person who is becoming wayward? Is He angry, or is He moved with compassion?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, I think there are a lot of passages that come into play there. That was part of why, in wrestling through this, we ended up coming up with the concept of rugged love, which is not a new way of thinking about love as much as it is just trying to go back and rethink about the part of love that has teeth\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the part of love that is speaking truth is willing to enforce consequences, is willing to define behavior as it is, is willing to be sinned against and continue to show mercy\u2014you know, the kind of love that is sturdy and rugged. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of what we\u2019re advocating is that: \u201cIf God is inviting you into that kind of relationship, then you\u2019re being invited into a season\u2014it may be a long season. And you\u2019re being invited into something that isn\u2019t first about that prodigal. It\u2019s probably first about something God wants to do in and through you, as it relates to your own heart; that is, God wants to expand out your own understanding of love so that you can enjoy it more and then apply it to another person, who\u2019s sinning, but relate to that sinner with the kind of love and mercy in which the Savior related to us.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As I\u2019m listening here, I can\u2019t help but think about Galatians, Chapter 6, where it talks about: \u201cIf someone\u2019s caught in a trespass\u2026\u201d\u2014speaks to us, who aren\u2019t caught\u2014he says, \u201cBrothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the nature of someone going off on a prodigal wandering\u2014that\u2019s really impacting a parent, or a spouse, or a close friend\u2014the nature of it is to take it so personally that you want to preach \/ you don\u2019t want to be gentle\u2014you don\u2019t want to seek to come after them in a way to restore. You want to convince them that what they\u2019re doing is destructive; that what they\u2019re doing is wrong, and appeal to them to come out of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think where the Bible points us is to evaluate our own hearts first. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, it says: \u201cRestore that person in that spirit of gentleness,\u201d going as you would want someone to come to you if you were off-track.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, and I think it helps for us to have some coaching as we enter into a process like this, as we try to apply Galatians, Chapter 6, in a relationship with somebody who\u2019s gotten off-track. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. We\u2019ve had occasion to talk a number of times here about the issue of parents with prodigal children, but it occurs to me that a prodigal is not always a child. There can be lots of prodigals in lots of relationships in our lives; can\u2019t there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are prodigal saints. We have a couple of pastors with us, who I have just an inkling of an idea that you guys got part of your passion for prodigals and for those who are struggling \/ those who are wayward as you wrote a book called <em>Letting Go: Rugged Love for Wayward Souls.<\/em> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDave Harvey and Paul Gilbert join us on <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>Welcome back, Dave; and Paul, welcome to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It\u2019s great to be back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> Thanks for having us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Paul is a pastor in Tallahassee at Four Oaks Community Church. Dave has gone south into Deep South Florida.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Naples.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Naples, Florida.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The church there is The Summit Church. Was I right about you guys first seeing this among Christians \/ among those who are in the church today\u2014where you got your passion for prodigals?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, I think we probably first got it in the experience of our own lives\u2014just living life\u2014having a family \/ having extended family\u2014seeing it touch people that we love\u2014and beginning to think about what this really represents\u2014what it represents to God \/ how we\u2019re supposed to position ourselves and love them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, you begin pastoring\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you begin walking through churches and you realize that you can\u2019t\u2014you can\u2019t throw a rock in any direction without hitting <em>somebody<\/em> that isn\u2019t <em>profoundly<\/em> affected by this topic. It may be somebody that\u2019s in their home, who is a prodigal \/ it may be somebody that they know who loves a prodigal; but <em>everybody<\/em> seems to be connected in some way to this topic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And, Paul, you\u2019re expanding the idea of prodigal. We typically think of it as a child who has become wayward,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014but there can be prodigals in all kinds of relationships.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> Oh, sure! We might think about somebody at church in our small group, who decides to leave their family, or a spouse who is discovered to have some sort of secret life. It can really extend to a variety of relationships beyond just the typical parent\/child. It\u2019s anyone who\u2019s straying\u2014anyone who is kind of rejecting the roles, and relationships, and the voices that God has put into their lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And the pain that is associated when a friend, a loved one, a spouse, [or] a child starts to wander \/ becomes wayward\u2014that\u2019s a unique kind of pain. I mean, we have pain in all kinds of relationships, but there\u2019s something deep and profound about somebody moving away from what is core to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> It can feel like you\u2019re losing a part of your body \/ one of your limbs. You keep looking down for that limb, and it\u2019s gone \/ it\u2019s absent. It\u2019s something that is haunting. It\u2019s an ongoing pain\u2014it\u2019s an acute pain \/ it\u2019s chronic. And so, as such, it\u2019s very hard to escape from it. In fact, you feel like you can\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, we live in this network of relationships, where there are all of these kinds of agreements, and codes, and implied covenants and arrangements, where we feel like we have a certain role \/ we act a certain way. When you have somebody, who you\u2019re close to that, all of a sudden, says: \u201cYou know what? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThat role that I\u2019ve had in your life\u2014I\u2019m going to reject that role. I\u2019m going to back away and reject <em>your<\/em> voice into my life.\u201d It\u2019s a <em>profoundly<\/em> unsettling experience, which goes all of the way down to that person\u2019s identity; because their whole world is shaken: \u201cWhat else can unravel if this can unravel?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I had a friend one time that I had lunch with, just to plead with him about a decision he\u2019d made to divorce his wife and leave his three daughters. I just remember the anguish I went through with a friend. Now, I had a good relationship with him; but later on, I went through that same experience with an extended family member. I\u2019m telling you\u2014the deeper the love, the greater the anguish. It\u2019s back to what you talked about, Paul\u2014feeling like you\u2019ve lost an arm or a leg. It\u2019s a dramatic hurt, because you really care about the person and want the best. You see them headed in a self-destructive way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> And that\u2019s part of the importance of getting the word, prodigal, and expanding it out so that people understand that this is happening far beyond just what parents experience with kids. It happens with siblings; it happens in marriages; it happens to people that love another person as a friend; and they just see them spin out and embrace this narrative, where they are no longer responsible \/ they no longer have any kind of agency.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s funny\u2014I was just reading <em>Hillbilly Elegy, <\/em>by J.D. Vance\u2014it\u2019s a new book that\u2019s out. He was talking about the Hillbilly code and how there are two Hillbilly codes. One is embodied in the hard-working person, who will just always get it done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the other\u2014he told a story about being in a tile factory, where he had to work there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a man who was hired that had a pregnant wife\u2014who had a <em>great<\/em> job there \/ he had insurance; but the guy just wouldn\u2019t arrive at work on time. He would take breaks for an hour rather than just the regular fifteen-minute break. Eventually, the man was fired. What J.D. Vance was reflecting on was just how the man, when he would describe the problem, could never come to terms with his own sense of agency \/ his own sense of responsibility. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I read that, I thought, \u201cYou know, I think what we\u2019re talking about there is the core of waywardness.\u201d It goes all the way back to Genesis 3: \u201cIt\u2019s the woman You gave me, Lord.\u201d So it\u2019s not only \u201cnot my problem\u201d but \u201cIt\u2019s the woman\u2019s problem. And, as a matter of fact, Lord, You gave her to me\u2014so You are roped into this as well.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s that sense where people\u2014even people who say that they love Christ\u2014can sometimes come to a place where they\u2019ll reject the relationship that they have \/ they\u2019ll reject the role that they\u2019re in\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they\u2019ll say, \u201cYou know, I\u2019m no longer really responsible for those things.\u201d That can be <em>profoundly<\/em> unsettling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Paul, the seeds of waywardness are in all of us; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> Of course!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is not something that Christians are immune to or that good people are protected from, but any of us could wander this path at any moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> We\u2019re all born wayward. We have a disposition that wants to wander from God\u2014that does not want to acknowledge His authority, His rule, or His care in our lives. Of course, God pursues us through His Son, Jesus, through the gospel. So, we want to be careful here to say, \u201cWe\u2019re all wayward.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> You know, we\u2019re all in need of God\u2019s grace, and His mercy, and His forgiveness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe would distinguish between that and the fact that the wayward that we are talking about are those who seem to have found a home in their waywardness \/ they\u2019ve become entrenched. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey\u2019re not only comfortable there, but they feel like they have a <em>right<\/em> to remain there\u2014as [opposed to] someone, who\u2019s a believer, who\u2019s been indwelt with the Spirit of Christ, who knows they\u2019re wayward, trusts in the Lord\u2014wants to return to the Lord \/ wants to repent of their sin. The wayward person that we write about is one who doesn\u2019t even acknowledge that dynamic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So give me an example, from pastoral ministry that you\u2019ve done, where you\u2019ve been with somebody\u2014maybe either of you if you have an example\u2014you\u2019ve been with somebody, who\u2019s one of these entrenched wayward and: \u201cIt\u2019s just the way it is. You just need to adjust to it. This is who I am.\u201d Can you remember conversations you\u2019ve had like that with people?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> More than I would like to remember. I distinctly remember\u2014we\u2019ll call him Darren. There was this pastoral crisis. The wife, named Jennifer, had said, \u201cHe\u2019s leaving.\u201d It just came down to the point where he even acknowledged, \u201cI know this is not what God would want me to do, but I\u2019m going to do it; because I think my ultimate happiness is going to be found in pursuing this other relationship,\u201d or \u201c\u2026this other woman.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, sometimes, men or women won\u2019t even acknowledge that what they\u2019re doing is wrong; although, I think, intuitively, they <em>do <\/em>know. That\u2019s heartbreaking; because they have simply said, \u201cI think that my path to happiness and fulfillment\u2014I know that better than God knows and prescribes for me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Dave, when you\u2019ve got a guy like Darren, who says, \u201cI know this is wrong, but I\u2019m going to do it anyway,\u201d is there anything you can do with a guy like that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, I think the gospel speaks to situations like that; because I think there\u2019s a willful stubbornness that exists within all of us. You know, there\u2019s a point of continuity where, as Paul was saying, we\u2019re all wayward\u2014that\u2019s factory-installed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> So we can identify with the desire to just want to do our own thing and find a connection with him there; but then, you know, we have to be able to speak truth to that and help them to understand that there is a <em>path<\/em> that they\u2019re beginning to walk down that has <em>horrific<\/em> implications and has <em>incredibly<\/em> bad fruit attached to it; because, ultimately, what we\u2019re talking about is the path of the fool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re not talking about, you know, those sinful patterns, even, that you might fall into\u2014but you struggle back and forth and make a little bit of growth but, then, fall backwards\u2014we\u2019re talking about somebody, who is\u2014willfully, obstinately, in an entrenched manner\u2014electing to <em>disobey<\/em> what they know to be true in an effort to just move forward in a direction that <em>violates<\/em> everything they\u2019ve said in the past.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They\u2019re not saying [quoting <em>Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing<\/em>]: \u201cProne to wander, Lord, I feel it; Prone to leave the God I love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cHere\u2019s my heart; Take and seal it; Seal it for Thy courts above.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They\u2019re saying: \u201cProne to wander; I kind of like it! Get out of my way!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> They\u2019re saying: \u201cI love to wander, and I\u2019m wandering right now. That\u2019s where I\u2019m going \/ that\u2019s my destination.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think of a guy named\u2014I\u2019ll call him Tom. You know, he\u2019s professed Christ\u2014raised in a Christian home \/ went to Christian school\u2014but just, in high school, just began to make foolish choices. His parents would be <em>accommodating<\/em> him at each step of the way, and so he was never able to experience the <em>effects<\/em> of his poor choices. In each season, he just seemed to be <em>determined<\/em> to move <em>away<\/em> from God rather than toward God \/ away from what he grew up with rather than toward what he grew up with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s a great example of a wayward person; and it\u2019s also an example of how, I think, people that love them can be <em>so <\/em>tempted\u2014it\u2019s such a strong temptation\u2014to want to define love in a way that we accommodate their desires and protect them from the consequences of their choices.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And a big part of what you\u2019ve written in your book is: \u201cThat\u2019s not real love.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> That\u2019s not love at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I want to go back to my friend\u2014that I went and had lunch with in an attempt to appeal to him, \u201cDon\u2019t do this thing!\u201d I didn\u2019t come with stones in my hand to stone him for being this wandering friend. I came to him, appealing to him; to say: \u201cDon\u2019t do this to your wife \/ to your daughters. The trajectory of your life will not be good.\u201d And, yet, the reality was then\u2014and still remains today\u2014he really refused to hear the truth and also renounced his responsibilities.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you get somebody who doesn\u2019t want to hear the truth, and doesn\u2019t want to be responsible, that\u2019s a tough person to appeal to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> It is. The good news is: \u201cThere\u2019s hope\u2014there\u2019s hope in Scripture.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are many people who God has reached out to and powerfully transformed, who have walked that road. But understanding the nature of that waywardness, and understanding how to actually care and actually love somebody in the reality that might speed them along the way toward the right kind of help is really an important part of them moving forward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I think you have to realize you\u2019re not responsible for that other person\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Which is <em>really <\/em>hard to come to terms with sometimes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Especially if it\u2019s your child that\u2019s the prodigal or if it\u2019s your spouse who is leaving you\u2014I mean, the depth of relationship\u2014you feel, like you said, like you\u2019re losing a limb: \u201cThis is a part of me!\u201d It\u2019s hard not to feel responsible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Part of the burden\u2014part of the shame, part of the wounds, the weight\u2014whether it\u2019s parents or anybody who loves a prodigal\u2014what they carry is a sense of \/ that sense of responsibility. It binds its way into their mind every day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it\u2019s not just the <em>worry<\/em> that they feel; but it\u2019s the <em>crushing<\/em> condemnation that\u2014somehow, in some way, that they\u2019re not completely aware\u2014they\u2019re responsible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And they caused it. I mean, a parent is set up to evaluate all of the mistakes he or she has made in raising a son or daughter, who has taken a wayward path. It\u2019s sure easy to condemn yourself in the midst of that. Speak to that person \/ that parent, who\u2019s feeling that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> A prodigal is a great opportunity to be able to say, \u201cYou know, I haven\u2019t been a perfect parent.\u201d If we\u2019re talking about a parent, there may be things that a child\u2019s prodigal behavior does reveal about the imperfections within the home and the imperfections within the parenting, but that kind of response\u2014the extremeness of that response\u2014isn\u2019t typically just that somebody hasn\u2019t been doing something. There\u2019s far more at work there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFolks that are living in that way need to really understand the gospel hope and gospel encouragement that can come to them so they can position themselves in a way to really care for and love that prodigal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I remember coming to terms with the idea that, as a parent, I felt like my child\u2019s behavior was all about me and my parenting\u2014that: \u201cIf I\u2019ve done the right things, they\u2019re going to behave the right way. If I\u2019ve done the wrong things, they\u2019re going to behave the wrong way.\u201d Then I started to think about me, as a child; and I thought: \u201cWell, now, wait! I didn\u2019t feel that way as a child. I felt like: \u2018I am the one making the decisions about these things. Sure, my parents influenced me in one way or another, for better or for worse; but ultimately, I make my own calls.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo when we can stop and think about the fact that our kids, even if they\u2019re making bad choices, they\u2019re aware that: \u201cThese are my choices. This is not Mom and Dad pushing me on the wrong path. This is the path I\u2019m choosing to go on.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Mom and Dad\u2014again, as you\u2019ve said\u2014we may have influenced it in some way, but the ultimate choice to become wayward is a choice that comes more from the sin nature inside of a person than it does from any external influence.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> Yes; Larry Osborn always talks about how, as parents, we do have great influence over our kids\u2014no one would argue with that\u2014but the one thing we do not have is ultimate control.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul:<\/strong> And so, parents or spouses of wayward husbands\/wives\u2014what have you\u2014as they delve into the book \/ as they delve into their own personal situations\u2014absolutely, there\u2019s going to be introspection, there\u2019s going to be examining of the heart, examining of unhealthy patterns, but also recognizing that, you know, we just sow seed. God is the One who makes things <em>grow<\/em>. No matter what we do, we don\u2019t have control of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So here\u2019s my question: \u201cIf somebody is moving in a wayward direction\u2014a child, a spouse, somebody in our small group\u2014like you said, it can be any number\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cI have an initial impulse, which is to feel betrayed, to feel angry, [and] to be hurt by the choice that person\u2019s making. My initial impulse is not compassion for that person \/ it is not wanting to help. I feel more prophetic than I do wanting to care for their needs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow should I be feeling? How does Jesus feel about the person who is becoming wayward? Is He angry, or is He moved with compassion?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave:<\/strong> Well, I think there are a lot of passages that come into play there. That was part of why, in wrestling through this, we ended up coming up with the concept of rugged love, which is not a new way of thinking about love as much as it is just trying to go back and rethink about the part of love that has teeth\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the part of love that is speaking truth is willing to enforce consequences, is willing to define behavior as it is, is willing to be sinned against and continue to show mercy\u2014you know, the kind of love that is sturdy and rugged. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of what we\u2019re advocating is that: \u201cIf God is inviting you into that kind of relationship, then you\u2019re being invited into a season\u2014it may be a long season. And you\u2019re being invited into something that isn\u2019t first about that prodigal. It\u2019s probably first about something God wants to do in and through you, as it relates to your own heart; that is, God wants to expand out your own understanding of love so that you can enjoy it more and then apply it to another person, who\u2019s sinning, but relate to that sinner with the kind of love and mercy in which the Savior related to us.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As I\u2019m listening here, I can\u2019t help but think about Galatians, Chapter 6, where it talks about: \u201cIf someone\u2019s caught in a trespass\u2026\u201d\u2014speaks to us, who aren\u2019t caught\u2014he says, \u201cBrothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the nature of someone going off on a prodigal wandering\u2014that\u2019s really impacting a parent, or a spouse, or a close friend\u2014the nature of it is to take it so personally that you want to preach \/ you don\u2019t want to be gentle\u2014you don\u2019t want to seek to come after them in a way to restore. You want to convince them that what they\u2019re doing is destructive; that what they\u2019re doing is wrong, and appeal to them to come out of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think where the Bible points us is to evaluate our own hearts first. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, it says: \u201cRestore that person in that spirit of gentleness,\u201d going as you would want someone to come to you if you were off-track.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, and I think it helps for us to have some coaching as we enter into a process like this, as we try to apply Galatians, Chapter 6, in a relationship with somebody who\u2019s gotten off-track.
