Before I signed it, I had\u2014because we were, I think, just emailing at that point; we weren\u2019t talking any other way\u2014I remember I had sent him one last email. I told him again: \u201cThis is not what I choose. This is not what I want; but if this is what you asking for, then I\u2019m going to sign the papers.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, September 26<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. We\u2019ll hear about what led up to the death of Chris and Stephanie Teague\u2019s marriage today and how God was not done with them yet. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are some couples who\u2014they never expected their marriage would end up where it ended up\u2014couples who, when they stood and said, \u201cI do,\u201d were rock solid in their commitment to one another\u2014only to find that, months later or years later, that rock-solid commitment had started to erode. They were now looking at one another and thinking, \u201cI\u2019m not sure I want to be married to you anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Thirty or forty years ago, it was called the seven-year itch\u2014marriage kind of goes through the ups and downs of the honeymoon and then breaking in a marriage relationship; and then, there\u2019s an itch that used to be said occurs around seven years. That now occurs around three-and-a-half years, if you take a look at the stats. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe couple that are with us experienced that almost literally; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> On the dot; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Chris and Stephanie Teague join us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie: <\/strong>Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Thank you for having us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They are a singing duo from near Nashville. Their group is called Out of the Dust. You shared, earlier, that in 2006 you married; and about three-and-a-half years later, Chris, you had wandered and gotten off into drugs. What else were you off into?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Off into drugs and <em>doubt<\/em>\u2014a lot of hiding \/ a lot of questioning\u2014a lot of shame.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Lost your faith temporarily.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Stephanie, you watched all this happen; and finally, he came home and said, \u201cI want a divorce.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Basically.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Thought you\u2019d never hear those words.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Oh! Absolutely not! No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Describe what it\u2019s like, as a wife, who\u2019s been married for three-and-a-half years\u2014yes; there are rocky spots in your marriage; but for the most part, you\u2019re doing okay; or you think you\u2019re doing okay\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I thought so; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014to have your husband sit you down and say: \u201cI don\u2019t believe in God, and I don\u2019t want to be married to you anymore.\u201d You said you couldn\u2019t speak for\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> It was probably for half an hour. I literally could not form thoughts! I couldn\u2019t, because in my brain\u2014I\u2019m very much a mental processor \/ you know, I think things through very thoroughly. I could not make sense of what he was telling me; because it did not \/ it just didn\u2019t compute with what my life was\u2014like: \u201cThis was not a possibility. This was <em>not<\/em> in our plan. There\u2019s no way!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t have a category for this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t; no!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> I chased her through the house\u2014not literally\u2014but I followed her through the house after I told her. She\u2019s just sitting on the side of the bed; and I sat down beside her and I said, \u201cWhat are you thinking?\u201d And she said, \u201cI just\u2014I can\u2019t even\u2014I can\u2019t even talk right now.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you want to walk it back at all? Was there any part of you, saying, \u201cMaybe I\u2018m\u2014maybe I just misspoke\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Or was it a relief?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris: <\/strong>I was ready \/ I was studied\u2014I was ready for\u2014not battle\u2014but I had gotten ready.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You had mentally prepared for this moment,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014knowing what you might face.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you were resolute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; and again, I mean, I am a people-pleaser. There is nothing \/ <em>nothing<\/em> in me that wanted to hurt people \/ nothing in me that wanted to tear somebody\u2019s life apart. But what I wanted was still more important. I would say, very quickly, that I hated hurting people. She would\u2014we\u2019ve said this before\u2014I was like an iron fist with a velvet glove \/ I was very nice: \u201cI hate to hurt you, but I\u2019m going to hit you in the face anyway.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So Stephanie, when you finally were able to speak, what were the words you said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I don\u2019t even remember! I think it was just a lot of: \u201cWhy?\u201d\u2014like: \u201cWhat? I don\u2019t understand!\u201d I think, also, I remember us having conversation\u2014maybe even just in the couple of days that followed\u2014of: \u201cWe can still make this work; you know? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cJust because you\u2019re going through this, it\u2019s not \/ it doesn\u2019t mean we have to get divorced. We can still figure this out together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You fought for the marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I did; yes, I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Looking back, now, I think\u2014and there\u2019s still that blindness\u2014but I think I knew, in my heart, that we could make it work: \u201cYou know, there\u2019s people that believe and don\u2019t believe; they stay married.\u201d But at the end of the day, Stephanie, and God, and our marriage stood in the way of me being able to live this life that I wanted to live. I didn\u2019t want to stop hanging out \/ I didn\u2019t want to stop doing drugs\u2014I wanted to live this kind of life that I\u2019d never gotten to experience since we were married so young. So, it didn\u2019t matter, at the end of the day, that we could make it work\u2014I <em>didn\u2019t<\/em> want to make it work \/ I was done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You ended up\u2014the night that you told her you wanted out\u2014you ended, going over to her parents\u2019 house and telling them?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; fun night\u2014yes; all of that in one night.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was their response?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Same thing as Stephanie\u2014just: \u201cWhy? We don\u2019t understand.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was your answer to: \u201cWhy?\u201d [Chris sighs] You couldn\u2019t say: \u201cBecause I\u2019m selfish, and I just want to do what I want to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Right! Exactly. My cover and my explanation was just that it didn\u2019t make sense: \u201cWhy should we stay married? Who wants that? I want\u201d \u2014I don\u2019t know that I ever said this but\u2014saying: \u201cWhat\u2019s best for Stephanie?\u2014to be with a Shmoe like me, who doesn\u2019t believe \/ who\u2019s, you know, bored? Shouldn\u2019t we just end it?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As a boy, you\u2019re parents divorced. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>A lot of listeners, here, listening to this broadcast <em>vowed<\/em>\u2014after they watched their parents\u2019 divorce\u2014that they would <em>never<\/em> go back on their promise. Had you made a vow like that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> I remember\u2014I remember making that vow! You know, I remember saying: \u201cI\u2019m never going to do that. I won\u2019t ever do that to a wife. I won\u2019t ever do that to our kids,\u201d or \u201c\u2026to my kids.\u201d But then, there\u2019s that moment, again, back in the garden with Adam and Eve: \u201cDid God really say, \u2018Do not eat?\u2019\u201d\u2014I hear: \u201cDo you really have to stay married? There\u2019s no <em>law<\/em>.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Last night, Barbara and I were sitting on the couch. It had been a full day. She was tired, and she does a lot on behalf of FamilyLife that no one ever sees. I was just cuddled up to her, and she was there by me. I said: \u201cYou know, you\u2019ve been really pro our marriage and our family, but also pro other peoples\u2019 marriage and family. I just want to thank you \/ thank you for doing that.\u201d For a moment, we both revisited our promise. It was really healthy to look her in the eye and say: \u201cI want you to know I have kept my promise. You\u2019re the one and only.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat promise is the most sacred pledge two human beings ever make. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf there is somebody listening, right now, that\u2019s on the precipice: \u201cListen to me!! You\u2019re only a step away from destruction!\u201d Anybody, who thinks they are standing and couldn\u2019t fall needs to be wise; because it\u2014basically, if you listened earlier to your story, you were kind of the model couple.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes, leading worship \/ being on stage\u2014we were involved in the church. We were young but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cDon\u2019t do it!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cDon\u2019t do it!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> There\u2019s a purpose to the pain. If you\u2019re not happy, that\u2019s not what\u2014it\u2019s not about happiness\u2014you know, there\u2019s a purpose in our own growth. If we had stayed\u2014I don\u2019t know; we\u2019re both thankful for the experience\u2014but if we had stayed, I think, the story could have been just as powerful in our lives\u2014perhaps, not as <em>exciting<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Stephanie, you\u2014for the first week or so after Chris said, \u201cI want out,\u201d\u2014you thought: \u201cThere\u2019s still hope. We can still put this back together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I thought so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But there came a point\u2014I don\u2019t know whether it was weeks or months later\u2014where you thought, \u201cThis isn\u2019t going to get put back together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, he was on a jet sled\u2014I mean, he was running toward the divorce courts; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> He was! Again, very nice about it all\u2014he agreed to meetings with pastors, and friends, and family\u2014very nice in his conversations\u2014but nothing was changing his mind. We stayed up late, several nights after that conversation, and argued and pleading\u2014you know, it didn\u2019t matter. It was about a month \/ about a month of that and just seeing: \u201cThis isn\u2019t going anywhere.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So should you have contested this harder and longer?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> You know, I spent a lot of time in prayer about this; because I had actually just walked through this same thing with one of my best friends and her husband, who\u2019s in a very similar situation\u2014seeing the pain that she went through, fighting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to do what was best for him in, potentially\u2014not even bringing him back to me\u2014but bringing him back to the Lord. I knew\u2014you know, if I continued to be oppositional to him \/ if I became a very aggressive thing, I didn\u2019t see any fruit that would come from that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> To me, it was an obstacle course\u2014I met with pastors; I met with friends; I met with family members\u2014it was like \/ it was just a check list. To me\u2014the end goal was freedom \/ the end goal was me. It didn\u2019t matter\u2014you know, I wasn\u2019t listening \/ I was just as good at hiding my true intentions. I\u2019m sitting there, being this great actor, you know: \u201cOh, yeah; I do \/ I do see that point,\u201d and \u201cThank you for saying that.\u201d There are so many things that I <em>endured<\/em>, in my own mind, as I\u2019m sitting there with people and meeting. It\u2019s all just checks on a list to get to where I want to go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So take us to the moment the divorce was finalized. Were you in court that day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> We didn\u2019t have to go to court\u2014I just had to go into the office of the lawyer that he had hired and sign. Oh, gosh, such a bizarre thing. But I know, right before I signed it, I had \u2014because we were just, I think, emailing at that point; we weren\u2019t talking any other way\u2014I remember I had sent him one last email. I told him, again: \u201cThis is not what I choose. This is not what I want. What I want is <em>you<\/em> and for our marriage; but if this is what you are asking for, then I am going to sign the papers.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce I\u2014I felt released, at that point. He knew where I stood, and he still wanted to move forward. So I had to\u2014in the most bizarre, probably, experience of my life\u2014I had to walk into a lawyer\u2019s office, sign my name a couple of times, and walk out. And that was it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you go home from a meeting like that\u2014to an empty apartment, or a house, or wherever you were living at the time\u2014you just feel numb; don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes; yes! Throughout that season, I\u2019d been through the gamut of emotions. You know, it was anger\u2014and I\u2019m very justice-minded\u2014so it just felt so unfair!\u2014you know: \u201cThis isn\u2019t what I chose for my life. I\u2019m here trying to fight for our marriage, and I can\u2019t <em>do<\/em> anything about it.\u201d I think that was the <em>hardest<\/em> part\u2014was the helplessness for me\u2014that I couldn\u2019t <em>do<\/em> anything \/ that I couldn\u2019t <em>change<\/em> his decision. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA lot of it, too, was I felt <em>shame<\/em>; because, here I am\u2014I\u2019m very achievement-driven\u2014you know, for people to <em>see<\/em> what had happened in our marriage. I mean, we were well-known in our community and in our church. I\u2019ve never been one to care a whole lot about what people think of me; but for people to see me as: \u201cOh!\u201d\u2014like: \u201cShe\u2019s like 23\/24 and divorced. What <em>really<\/em> happened?\u201d\u2014you know?\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014just that shame of being a divorcee, at such a young age.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you knew that the divorce was final\u2014when the lawyer called and said: \u201cShe signed it. We\u2019re done,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s the goal you had been aiming for\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014was there the momentary euphoria of: \u201cNow, I\u2019m free\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> No; no. Not at all\u2014my heart was hardened\u2014I do believe that. But at the same time, I remember the two really key moments I\u2014it was when the papers were filed and, then again, when I took over the house\u2014you know, I remember sitting in a banker\u2019s office in downtown Nashville, fighting tears, while I\u2019m sitting with this person across from me: \u201cSign here,\u201d \u201cSign here,\u201d\u2014you know, this huge HUD form and all that\u2014holding back tears, trying to keep it together, while I\u2019m sitting there. There was still that spark, but the enemy just had such a hold on me for what I thought was best and for what <em>I<\/em> wanted to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Even though this is what you <em>wanted<\/em>\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014there was still something inside, going, \u201cThis is wrong\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; and just the hurt and the: \u201cThis is not where I thought I would be\u201d; you know? There was a lot of confusion, I think, during those moments.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You had quit going to church at this point; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Oh yes; absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Because in your mind, the whole God-thing has just been wrong. You\u2019re starting to hang out with different folks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You are now a 24-year-old single guy, hanging out with people, who don\u2019t have any spiritual convictions. That\u2019s a dangerous place to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; yes! It felt like freedom, though. I had felt like I\u2019d been living \/ I\u2019d been living in duplicity for <em>years<\/em> and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>For how long did it feel like freedom?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Not long! But for those\u2014you know, that first rush of dopamine\/adrenaline\u2014that cocktail\u2014it felt <em>great<\/em>, but it was very short lived. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The Bible says there is pleasure in sin for a season. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; I believe that! Nobody would sin if it wasn\u2019t fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you got the initial pleasure out of: \u201cOkay; this is what I was looking for. I\u2019m free. I can do what I want \/ I can make those choices.\u201d But there\u2019s a bitter aftertaste that comes with that, and you experienced it pretty quick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes! Another analogy\u2014I love the idea of Wiley Coyote running. He doesn\u2019t even know that the ground is gone any more\u2014he just keeps on running and running\u2014and that was me, you know, very quickly. Sin does have consequences. The relationships that I started were\u2014I wouldn\u2019t say numerous\u2014but it wasn\u2019t just one. I was doing things \/ being with people\u2014 starting new relationships \/ ending relationships\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it all\u2014it was all out of this just massive desire\u2014I felt like I\u2019d been cooped up. I sort of exploded in this big blaze of\u2014I guess, yeah\u2014of pleasure, and the sin, and all that that entails\u2014in the freedom that I <em>felt<\/em> like I had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you know this was his new life? Were you hearing word, around town, that: \u201cHe\u2019s going out with So-and-so\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> A little bit\u2014I mean, we\u2019re in the same town. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> So you can only avoid so much. But I\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> And Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> too\u2014it\u2019s impossible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> \u2014but I blocked it so I couldn\u2019t see his Facebook, because it was <em>nothing<\/em> but painful to hear what was going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Any part of <em>you<\/em>, thinking to yourself: \u201cWell, maybe God is protecting me from what would have been a terrible\u201d\u2014you know\u2014\u201cthis guy. Maybe, now, I can meet some really godly guy\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes! I mean, you have to make sense of it somehow. You believe the Scriptures that there\u2019s a purpose in that suffering. I didn\u2019t know what it was, at that point; but I did know\u2014hearing and seeing what he was doing\u2014I knew that I didn\u2019t want to be a part of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m not that familiar with all the songs you\u2019ve written.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Was there a song written about this particular moment in your relationship?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> We see this as a ministry. We think our story serves the music and the music serves the story as a platform together. Anything we write\u2014typically, we try to have, not generic, but we want it to relate to our story\u2014but also, we know that this is not common\u2014so we do try to make it point outward as well. There\u2019s no\u2014there definitely is a downer\u2014\u201cWe need help\u201d song\u2014but there\u2019s nothing that speaks specifically to this moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You have written about the fact that God has purposes in suffering\u2014that God redeems suffering \/ that suffering is not something you run from but something you lean into. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What\u2019s a song that captures that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> <em>Make Us Whole<\/em>, for sure\u2014our song\u2014it\u2019s on our record. We do believe that <em>so<\/em> much. We wouldn\u2019t trade our story. One of our counselors, as we were coming back around\u2014I\u2019m jumping ahead \/ I\u2019m sorry but\u2014said: \u201cGod allowed you to go through this.\u201d That\u2019s hard to hear sometimes; but our song, <em>Make Us Whole<\/em>, says: \u201cWe are tested; we are tried. But there\u2019s a blessing on the other side,\u201d because He does redeem that suffering when we give it over to Him. Before I signed it, I had\u2014because we were, I think, just emailing at that point; we weren\u2019t talking any other way\u2014I remember I had sent him one last email. I told him again: \u201cThis is not what I choose. This is not what I want; but if this is what you asking for, then I\u2019m going to sign the papers.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, September 26<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. We\u2019ll hear about what led up to the death of Chris and Stephanie Teague\u2019s marriage today and how God was not done with them yet. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are some couples who\u2014they never expected their marriage would end up where it ended up\u2014couples who, when they stood and said, \u201cI do,\u201d were rock solid in their commitment to one another\u2014only to find that, months later or years later, that rock-solid commitment had started to erode. They were now looking at one another and thinking, \u201cI\u2019m not sure I want to be married to you anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Thirty or forty years ago, it was called the seven-year itch\u2014marriage kind of goes through the ups and downs of the honeymoon and then breaking in a marriage relationship; and then, there\u2019s an itch that used to be said occurs around seven years. That now occurs around three-and-a-half years, if you take a look at the stats. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe couple that are with us experienced that almost literally; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> On the dot; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Chris and Stephanie Teague join us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie: <\/strong>Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Thank you for having us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They are a singing duo from near Nashville. Their group is called Out of the Dust. You shared, earlier, that in 2006 you married; and about three-and-a-half years later, Chris, you had wandered and gotten off into drugs. What else were you off into?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Off into drugs and <em>doubt<\/em>\u2014a lot of hiding \/ a lot of questioning\u2014a lot of shame.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Lost your faith temporarily.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Stephanie, you watched all this happen; and finally, he came home and said, \u201cI want a divorce.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Basically.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Thought you\u2019d never hear those words.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Oh! Absolutely not! No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Describe what it\u2019s like, as a wife, who\u2019s been married for three-and-a-half years\u2014yes; there are rocky spots in your marriage; but for the most part, you\u2019re doing okay; or you think you\u2019re doing okay\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I thought so; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014to have your husband sit you down and say: \u201cI don\u2019t believe in God, and I don\u2019t want to be married to you anymore.\u201d You said you couldn\u2019t speak for\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> It was probably for half an hour. I literally could not form thoughts! I couldn\u2019t, because in my brain\u2014I\u2019m very much a mental processor \/ you know, I think things through very thoroughly. I could not make sense of what he was telling me; because it did not \/ it just didn\u2019t compute with what my life was\u2014like: \u201cThis was not a possibility. This was <em>not<\/em> in our plan. There\u2019s no way!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t have a category for this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t; no!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> I chased her through the house\u2014not literally\u2014but I followed her through the house after I told her. She\u2019s just sitting on the side of the bed; and I sat down beside her and I said, \u201cWhat are you thinking?\u201d And she said, \u201cI just\u2014I can\u2019t even\u2014I can\u2019t even talk right now.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you want to walk it back at all? Was there any part of you, saying, \u201cMaybe I\u2018m\u2014maybe I just misspoke\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Or was it a relief?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris: <\/strong>I was ready \/ I was studied\u2014I was ready for\u2014not battle\u2014but I had gotten ready.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You had mentally prepared for this moment,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014knowing what you might face.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you were resolute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; and again, I mean, I am a people-pleaser. There is nothing \/ <em>nothing<\/em> in me that wanted to hurt people \/ nothing in me that wanted to tear somebody\u2019s life apart. But what I wanted was still more important. I would say, very quickly, that I hated hurting people. She would\u2014we\u2019ve said this before\u2014I was like an iron fist with a velvet glove \/ I was very nice: \u201cI hate to hurt you, but I\u2019m going to hit you in the face anyway.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So Stephanie, when you finally were able to speak, what were the words you said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I don\u2019t even remember! I think it was just a lot of: \u201cWhy?\u201d\u2014like: \u201cWhat? I don\u2019t understand!\u201d I think, also, I remember us having conversation\u2014maybe even just in the couple of days that followed\u2014of: \u201cWe can still make this work; you know? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cJust because you\u2019re going through this, it\u2019s not \/ it doesn\u2019t mean we have to get divorced. We can still figure this out together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You fought for the marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I did; yes, I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Looking back, now, I think\u2014and there\u2019s still that blindness\u2014but I think I knew, in my heart, that we could make it work: \u201cYou know, there\u2019s people that believe and don\u2019t believe; they stay married.\u201d But at the end of the day, Stephanie, and God, and our marriage stood in the way of me being able to live this life that I wanted to live. I didn\u2019t want to stop hanging out \/ I didn\u2019t want to stop doing drugs\u2014I wanted to live this kind of life that I\u2019d never gotten to experience since we were married so young. So, it didn\u2019t matter, at the end of the day, that we could make it work\u2014I <em>didn\u2019t<\/em> want to make it work \/ I was done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You ended up\u2014the night that you told her you wanted out\u2014you ended, going over to her parents\u2019 house and telling them?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; fun night\u2014yes; all of that in one night.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was their response?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Same thing as Stephanie\u2014just: \u201cWhy? We don\u2019t understand.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was your answer to: \u201cWhy?\u201d [Chris sighs] You couldn\u2019t say: \u201cBecause I\u2019m selfish, and I just want to do what I want to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Right! Exactly. My cover and my explanation was just that it didn\u2019t make sense: \u201cWhy should we stay married? Who wants that? I want\u201d \u2014I don\u2019t know that I ever said this but\u2014saying: \u201cWhat\u2019s best for Stephanie?\u2014to be with a Shmoe like me, who doesn\u2019t believe \/ who\u2019s, you know, bored? Shouldn\u2019t we just end it?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As a boy, you\u2019re parents divorced. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>A lot of listeners, here, listening to this broadcast <em>vowed<\/em>\u2014after they watched their parents\u2019 divorce\u2014that they would <em>never<\/em> go back on their promise. Had you made a vow like that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> I remember\u2014I remember making that vow! You know, I remember saying: \u201cI\u2019m never going to do that. I won\u2019t ever do that to a wife. I won\u2019t ever do that to our kids,\u201d or \u201c\u2026to my kids.\u201d But then, there\u2019s that moment, again, back in the garden with Adam and Eve: \u201cDid God really say, \u2018Do not eat?\u2019\u201d\u2014I hear: \u201cDo you really have to stay married? There\u2019s no <em>law<\/em>.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Last night, Barbara and I were sitting on the couch. It had been a full day. She was tired, and she does a lot on behalf of FamilyLife that no one ever sees. I was just cuddled up to her, and she was there by me. I said: \u201cYou know, you\u2019ve been really pro our marriage and our family, but also pro other peoples\u2019 marriage and family. I just want to thank you \/ thank you for doing that.\u201d For a moment, we both revisited our promise. It was really healthy to look her in the eye and say: \u201cI want you to know I have kept my promise. You\u2019re the one and only.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat promise is the most sacred pledge two human beings ever make. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf there is somebody listening, right now, that\u2019s on the precipice: \u201cListen to me!! You\u2019re only a step away from destruction!\u201d Anybody, who thinks they are standing and couldn\u2019t fall needs to be wise; because it\u2014basically, if you listened earlier to your story, you were kind of the model couple.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes, leading worship \/ being on stage\u2014we were involved in the church. We were young but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cDon\u2019t do it!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cDon\u2019t do it!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> There\u2019s a purpose to the pain. If you\u2019re not happy, that\u2019s not what\u2014it\u2019s not about happiness\u2014you know, there\u2019s a purpose in our own growth. If we had stayed\u2014I don\u2019t know; we\u2019re both thankful for the experience\u2014but if we had stayed, I think, the story could have been just as powerful in our lives\u2014perhaps, not as <em>exciting<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Stephanie, you\u2014for the first week or so after Chris said, \u201cI want out,\u201d\u2014you thought: \u201cThere\u2019s still hope. We can still put this back together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I thought so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But there came a point\u2014I don\u2019t know whether it was weeks or months later\u2014where you thought, \u201cThis isn\u2019t going to get put back together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, he was on a jet sled\u2014I mean, he was running toward the divorce courts; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> He was! Again, very nice about it all\u2014he agreed to meetings with pastors, and friends, and family\u2014very nice in his conversations\u2014but nothing was changing his mind. We stayed up late, several nights after that conversation, and argued and pleading\u2014you know, it didn\u2019t matter. It was about a month \/ about a month of that and just seeing: \u201cThis isn\u2019t going anywhere.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So should you have contested this harder and longer?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> You know, I spent a lot of time in prayer about this; because I had actually just walked through this same thing with one of my best friends and her husband, who\u2019s in a very similar situation\u2014seeing the pain that she went through, fighting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to do what was best for him in, potentially\u2014not even bringing him back to me\u2014but bringing him back to the Lord. I knew\u2014you know, if I continued to be oppositional to him \/ if I became a very aggressive thing, I didn\u2019t see any fruit that would come from that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> To me, it was an obstacle course\u2014I met with pastors; I met with friends; I met with family members\u2014it was like \/ it was just a check list. To me\u2014the end goal was freedom \/ the end goal was me. It didn\u2019t matter\u2014you know, I wasn\u2019t listening \/ I was just as good at hiding my true intentions. I\u2019m sitting there, being this great actor, you know: \u201cOh, yeah; I do \/ I do see that point,\u201d and \u201cThank you for saying that.\u201d There are so many things that I <em>endured<\/em>, in my own mind, as I\u2019m sitting there with people and meeting. It\u2019s all just checks on a list to get to where I want to go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So take us to the moment the divorce was finalized. Were you in court that day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> We didn\u2019t have to go to court\u2014I just had to go into the office of the lawyer that he had hired and sign. Oh, gosh, such a bizarre thing. But I know, right before I signed it, I had \u2014because we were just, I think, emailing at that point; we weren\u2019t talking any other way\u2014I remember I had sent him one last email. I told him, again: \u201cThis is not what I choose. This is not what I want. What I want is <em>you<\/em> and for our marriage; but if this is what you are asking for, then I am going to sign the papers.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce I\u2014I felt released, at that point. He knew where I stood, and he still wanted to move forward. So I had to\u2014in the most bizarre, probably, experience of my life\u2014I had to walk into a lawyer\u2019s office, sign my name a couple of times, and walk out. And that was it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you go home from a meeting like that\u2014to an empty apartment, or a house, or wherever you were living at the time\u2014you just feel numb; don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes; yes! Throughout that season, I\u2019d been through the gamut of emotions. You know, it was anger\u2014and I\u2019m very justice-minded\u2014so it just felt so unfair!\u2014you know: \u201cThis isn\u2019t what I chose for my life. I\u2019m here trying to fight for our marriage, and I can\u2019t <em>do<\/em> anything about it.\u201d I think that was the <em>hardest<\/em> part\u2014was the helplessness for me\u2014that I couldn\u2019t <em>do<\/em> anything \/ that I couldn\u2019t <em>change<\/em> his decision. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA lot of it, too, was I felt <em>shame<\/em>; because, here I am\u2014I\u2019m very achievement-driven\u2014you know, for people to <em>see<\/em> what had happened in our marriage. I mean, we were well-known in our community and in our church. I\u2019ve never been one to care a whole lot about what people think of me; but for people to see me as: \u201cOh!\u201d\u2014like: \u201cShe\u2019s like 23\/24 and divorced. What <em>really<\/em> happened?\u201d\u2014you know?\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014just that shame of being a divorcee, at such a young age.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you knew that the divorce was final\u2014when the lawyer called and said: \u201cShe signed it. We\u2019re done,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s the goal you had been aiming for\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014was there the momentary euphoria of: \u201cNow, I\u2019m free\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> No; no. Not at all\u2014my heart was hardened\u2014I do believe that. But at the same time, I remember the two really key moments I\u2014it was when the papers were filed and, then again, when I took over the house\u2014you know, I remember sitting in a banker\u2019s office in downtown Nashville, fighting tears, while I\u2019m sitting with this person across from me: \u201cSign here,\u201d \u201cSign here,\u201d\u2014you know, this huge HUD form and all that\u2014holding back tears, trying to keep it together, while I\u2019m sitting there. There was still that spark, but the enemy just had such a hold on me for what I thought was best and for what <em>I<\/em> wanted to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Even though this is what you <em>wanted<\/em>\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014there was still something inside, going, \u201cThis is wrong\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; and just the hurt and the: \u201cThis is not where I thought I would be\u201d; you know? There was a lot of confusion, I think, during those moments.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You had quit going to church at this point; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Oh yes; absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Because in your mind, the whole God-thing has just been wrong. You\u2019re starting to hang out with different folks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You are now a 24-year-old single guy, hanging out with people, who don\u2019t have any spiritual convictions. That\u2019s a dangerous place to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; yes! It felt like freedom, though. I had felt like I\u2019d been living \/ I\u2019d been living in duplicity for <em>years<\/em> and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>For how long did it feel like freedom?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Not long! But for those\u2014you know, that first rush of dopamine\/adrenaline\u2014that cocktail\u2014it felt <em>great<\/em>, but it was very short lived. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The Bible says there is pleasure in sin for a season. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; I believe that! Nobody would sin if it wasn\u2019t fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you got the initial pleasure out of: \u201cOkay; this is what I was looking for. I\u2019m free. I can do what I want \/ I can make those choices.\u201d But there\u2019s a bitter aftertaste that comes with that, and you experienced it pretty quick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes! Another analogy\u2014I love the idea of Wiley Coyote running. He doesn\u2019t even know that the ground is gone any more\u2014he just keeps on running and running\u2014and that was me, you know, very quickly. Sin does have consequences. The relationships that I started were\u2014I wouldn\u2019t say numerous\u2014but it wasn\u2019t just one. I was doing things \/ being with people\u2014 starting new relationships \/ ending relationships\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it all\u2014it was all out of this just massive desire\u2014I felt like I\u2019d been cooped up. I sort of exploded in this big blaze of\u2014I guess, yeah\u2014of pleasure, and the sin, and all that that entails\u2014in the freedom that I <em>felt<\/em> like I had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you know this was his new life? Were you hearing word, around town, that: \u201cHe\u2019s going out with So-and-so\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> A little bit\u2014I mean, we\u2019re in the same town. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> So you can only avoid so much. But I\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> And Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> too\u2014it\u2019s impossible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> \u2014but I blocked it so I couldn\u2019t see his Facebook, because it was <em>nothing<\/em> but painful to hear what was going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Any part of <em>you<\/em>, thinking to yourself: \u201cWell, maybe God is protecting me from what would have been a terrible\u201d\u2014you know\u2014\u201cthis guy. Maybe, now, I can meet some really godly guy\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes! I mean, you have to make sense of it somehow. You believe the Scriptures that there\u2019s a purpose in that suffering. I didn\u2019t know what it was, at that point; but I did know\u2014hearing and seeing what he was doing\u2014I knew that I didn\u2019t want to be a part of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m not that familiar with all the songs you\u2019ve written.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Was there a song written about this particular moment in your relationship?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> We see this as a ministry. We think our story serves the music and the music serves the story as a platform together. Anything we write\u2014typically, we try to have, not generic, but we want it to relate to our story\u2014but also, we know that this is not common\u2014so we do try to make it point outward as well. There\u2019s no\u2014there definitely is a downer\u2014\u201cWe need help\u201d song\u2014but there\u2019s nothing that speaks specifically to this moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You have written about the fact that God has purposes in suffering\u2014that God redeems suffering \/ that suffering is not something you run from but something you lean into. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What\u2019s a song that captures that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> <em>Make Us Whole<\/em>, for sure\u2014our song\u2014it\u2019s on our record. We do believe that <em>so<\/em> much. We wouldn\u2019t trade our story. One of our counselors, as we were coming back around\u2014I\u2019m jumping ahead \/ I\u2019m sorry but\u2014said: \u201cGod allowed you to go through this.\u201d That\u2019s hard to hear sometimes; but our song, <em>Make Us Whole<\/em>, says: \u201cWe are tested; we are tried. But there\u2019s a blessing on the other side,\u201d because He does redeem that suffering when we give it over to Him. I was also thinking about Romans, Chapter 5, as well\u2014it talks about how tribulation works about and results in patience, and perseverance, and proven character. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>All of those result in good fruit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; in fact, in the midst of all that was going on in your marriage, you didn\u2019t realize that God was at work in some significant ways; but He was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe good fruit was just beginning to ripen as you were going through all of these trials.
