Then it jumps to drugs, because that didn\u2019t do it. The parade of idols and counterfeit gods in my life\u2014I welcomed them all; you know? You know, every marriage is going to face some bumps in the road \/ some potholes\u2014sometimes, when maybe you\u2019ve got to pull the car off to the side and get things worked out. Some marriages face detours that are unexpected\u2014and some detours, where you wonder if you\u2019re ever going to get back to the right road, or maybe you don\u2019t make it back on the right road.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019m thinking of this couple. This is a situation where the bridge was out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t a detour\u2014it was out. It\u2019s not often I introduce a couple as having been married since 2006 and 2011. [Laughter] That doesn\u2019t happen very often; but I want to say, \u201cHi,\u201d to Chris and Stephanie Teague, who join us from Nashvegas!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Hello!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> That\u2019s right; hey!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Nashvegas, near my grandkids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; four of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWelcome to <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Thank you. Thanks for having us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m glad you\u2019re here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn case our listeners don\u2019t know, they have formed a group called Out of the Dust. They have got a brand-new LP; is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Is that how you say it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Long play.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Long play; that\u2019s right. Well, they have two children as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to take you back to when you met. Tell our listeners what happened in Philadelphia, Chris; we\u2019ve got a lot of listeners in Philly that I think will be interested in this\u2014WFIL.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; this was a mission trip that you guys were on; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> It was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. They would be probably interested to know that it felt like a culture shock coming from Nashville\u2014these two little small-town kids going to a big city. We were there to minister and do some VBS. Stephanie and I met at the training. I think she would tell you the guitar that I played probably had a big part in her attraction to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Was his guitar prettier or more handsome than him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Most definitely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> It\u2019s definitely the combination of the two that gets any 16-year-old girl; you know!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Chris, you grew up in a home where your dad left your mom when you were young.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> [Later,] he died when you were 12?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That\u2019s right; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you were raised by your mom. Spiritually, it was kind of up and down for you throughout your young life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> I think so. God really became real to me when I was in high school. I got involved with a lot of ministries, there at the high school I was at. Then, I got into a relationship\u2014like young kids do\u2014and that sort of led to me falling away and turning away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was after that relationship ended that I felt\u2014the crazy story is\u2014I felt God tap me on the shoulder. I\u2019m reluctant to say anything like that, but it was <em>amazing<\/em>\u2014the story of how I ended up on the trip to begin with. We were sitting in the service. I felt a tap on my shoulder. My mom had been bugging me about it; so I turned to her to say, \u201cYes; I know; I know.\u201d I turned, and she was just staring completely forward\u2014her hands were in her lap. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cOh, well, that\u2019s weird!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> And this is as the pastor is saying, \u201cHey, we need some more people to come on the trip.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026on this youth trip.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, Stephanie, what about you? Did you grow up in a Christian home?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You had a faith from a young age?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes; yes. I was blessed to grow up in a very strong, Christian home\u2014very loving home. Both of my parents were also raised in the church\u2014so, really, a comfortable, safe environment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You had signed up early for the mission trip, then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Oh, of course!\u2014as soon as I heard about it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you were going with a noble mission-minded agenda.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You weren\u2019t out scouting boys; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I was not; no! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But somehow, on that trip, the two of you\u2014did one of you sit down on the bus next to the other one?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> We kind of.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> I think so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Well, I\u2014it\u2019s so unlike me, but, you know\u2014I had noticed him in training. I was intrigued by him. I specifically remember picking a seat kind of close to him, just so I could get to know him a little bit. You know, it was a 12-hour drive on a school bus from Nashville. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we ended up\u2014maybe halfway through the trip\u2014groups of us starting playing cards. We ended up in the same group, playing Spades; I think\u2014and kind of never stopped.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> The rest is history.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So how long before he asked you to marry him, and how did he do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> It was, I guess, two years into dating. We were both in college, at that point, at MTSU. We were on a trip with his mom. She took us to\u2014where were we?\u2014Myrtle Beach, I think, South Carolina. He knew I loved the beach\u2014one of my favorite places. So, he got me up at sunrise\u2014we walked the beach, and he got down on one knee and proposed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Chris, because your parents had divorced at a young age, how did that shape your thoughts about marriage? Here you are\u2014diving in, early, to marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was that, in part, because of the divorce that had happened; do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> I don\u2019t really know. I mean, I didn\u2019t have an example. Becoming a father, just in the past couple of years, has helped me sort of deal with and unpack some of that stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I just didn\u2019t really have a day-to-day\u2014my grandfather was <em>incredible<\/em>\u2014he was a huge part of my life; but I didn\u2019t have a steady day-to-day dad coming home \/ mom saying, \u201cHey\u201d; you know?\u2014kissing and all\u2014I didn\u2019t have that. I didn\u2019t have a good example. So I really was just sort of going in blind, you know, with my hands over my eyes, I guess, sort of hoping for the best.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, Stephanie, your parents had to spot that Chris came from a home, where there was a dad missing. Did they have any questions about this relationship and about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Tell them what your mom said!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> So about a week after we came back from the mission trip\u2014or maybe just the Sunday after\u2014my family always had \/ still do\u2014we have Sunday lunch every week after church. It\u2019s our family\u2014my brother and his family; a couple other families, that are not by blood, but they\u2019re family; and all of [us] kids. He came to a Sunday lunch right after the trip. My mom, immediately, when she saw him walk in\u2014she thought, \u201cHe\u2019s trouble.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That was her first impression of me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> That was her first impression.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> And she was right\u2014to her credit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, if I were your dad, one of the questions I would ask you is: \u201cTell me a little bit about Chris\u2019s walk with the Lord. Would you say he\u2019s somebody who\u2019s solid in his faith?\u201d How would you have answered that before he proposed to you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> At that point, you know, when we started dating, we were seniors in high school. We spent hours at night talking on the phone\u2014we would read passages together. God was very much the center of our relationship. We did all sorts of classes at church together. I think we truly were pursuing the Lord and what He wanted for our lives, but that slowly declined.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> And I do\u2014I remember\u2014we would just talk on the phone: \u201cHey, guess what I read today! You\u2019ll never\u2014let me read this to you!\u201d So, we definitely had God in the right place or were trying to keep Him at the center, very early on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So while you were college students\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201420 and 19\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014you stood \u201cbefore God and these witnesses,\u201d looked each other in the eye, and said, \u201c\u2026\u2019til death do us part\u201d; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> We did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Was there something about your wedding day that was out of the ordinary?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Well, being the musician that Chris was, he surprised me with a song that he wrote for me and sang it during the ceremony\u2014had everybody crying in the ceremony. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> It was a bit gratuitous on my part. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Walk over and get your guitar and let\u2019s hear this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Chris, our audience gives us a lot of grace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m sure they\u2019ll give you some too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> I think it was like:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy life is brighter; I breathe lighter;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think\u2014I think that you do too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cWhen I\u2019m with you\u201d? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Does that fit?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Something about:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I couldn\u2019t be prouder\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo say, \u201cForever begins tonight.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr something like that\u2014I don\u2019t know! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So everybody was crying.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were you crying?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> You know\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You had makeup on, so you\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Of course, I was tearing up; but I don\u2019t think I was crying.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, you begin \u201chappily ever after\u201d as college students. I asked you this, when we were talking earlier: \u201cWhen did you start to notice that there were cracks in the foundation of your marriage?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t too long\u2014you know, I would say in the first year of our marriage. Overall, it was great\u2014it was kind of that stereotypical honeymoon phase; but there were definitely things that popped up\u2014both of us coming in, as everybody does in a marriage, coming in with our expectations\u2014some that we were aware of \/ some that we were not aware of. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEspecially for me, coming from the home that I came from\u2014and the home that he came from\u2014him not having that daily picture of what a husband is like in the home, and me having that and expecting him to know that\u2019s how he should be; right?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s how I expected him to be. I expected him to be home when I was home and to not go out all the time with his friends. You know, just different things that I very quickly saw: \u201cOh, okay! This is different than I imagined,\u201d and I think, also, becoming almost prideful about it, like: \u201cWell, he should know better! This is not right! He should know better.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, hold on. He went out with his buddies?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Sure!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014after he married you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> He did!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Like a Friday night?\u2014where you\u2019re both free; and he says: \u201cYou do whatever you want to do. I\u2019m going to go hang out with the guys\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> \u2014after work or\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes! Like I would think \/ I would expect him to come home after work. Instead, he\u2019d want to go out and go hang out with his work buddies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And somebody, along the way, suggested that the two of you guys should go to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> We did! I think that was a couple of years in; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> You\u2019re skipping ahead. In the end, you know, we had some pretty huge potholes that we had to overcome; but at the time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> But there were some great breakthroughs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; we had some huge breakthroughs after that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you remember anything from the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> that was kind of an \u201cAha!\u201d moment for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I think the communication was huge\u2014the session on communication\u2014because we did not deal with conflict well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> We were polar opposites as far as personality. Any test that you take\u2014if there\u2019s a spectrum\u2014then, we\u2019re going to be at the opposite ends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> We\u2019re always opposite.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> \u2014which is beautiful now, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And there did come a point, after you\u2019d been to the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, Stephanie, where you started noticing, maybe, some drifting \/ some isolation that was happening, where you just sensed that something wasn\u2019t right in the relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I did. Some of it was the people that he was hanging out with\u2014people that, just in my spirit, I didn\u2019t feel right about\u2014but, again, our communication was so poor, at that point. If I said anything, he\u2019d get defensive; or I would come across, I don\u2019t know, kind of arrogant about it or judgmental. So then, of course, then he\u2019s getting defensive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t feel comfortable with his friends. He went on a trip with school to Russia; and he did admit to me some drug use that happened then, which was a little scary for me; because that\u2019s something that I just had never been exposed to or expected to have in our marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That is what came out of the FamilyLife conference, by the way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> It did; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s where you fessed up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes; he admitted to that; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; a few years before the big fall-out; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was going on with you?\u2014to be curious about that and to want to experiment with that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That\u2019s the best question you could ask! After we went through what we went through, our pastor gave me a book called <em>Counterfeit Gods <\/em>by Tim Keller\u2014incredible book! It helped me recognize this pattern of idolatry in my life, going from this thing to this thing. Nothing satisfies; so you just keep jumping from one thing to the next; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst, it was marriage; you know? I thought that was going to be incredible and fix me and be everything\u2014and that wasn\u2019t so. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo then, it jumps to identity\u2014and school and music\u2014and pursuing that. Then, it jumps to drugs; because that didn\u2019t do it. So, everything\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> [Quoting from a song lyric] \u201cYou still hadn\u2019t found what you were looking for.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; U2\u2014great reference. Yes; the parade of idols and counterfeit gods in my life\u2014I welcomed them all; you know? They just all came down the pike, and nothing satisfied.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We scooted past it; but 1 Corinthians, Chapter 15, talks about bad company corrupting good morals. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t think we talked much about this; and we probably should, here, on the broadcast\u2014that who you hang out with and who you are kindred spirit with is determinative around the spiritual well-being for your own soul\u2014but also those who are closest to you\u2014if you\u2019re married: your spouse \/ your children. Talk about the influence these friends had on you and how dangerous it was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That\u2019s great. I was an only child. My mom\u2014I never lived in the neighborhood that I went to school at\u2014so I didn\u2019t have the opportunity to just hang out with a lot of people. I spent a lot of time, alone, as a kid. As we got to college, it was like you\u2019re right there\u2014we\u2019re living on campus; there are friends; we\u2019re in college and married. I have friends at work, now, that live close.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, for the first time in my life\u2014and this isn\u2019t a pity party\u2014this is just sort of where I was at that time\u2014I had friends that I could go hang out with, you know, at a very prime time in my life. The places that I was at were college, and the music industry, and restaurants with servers. I did notice that there was an influence; but at that time, there was a naivet\u00e9 about what it was <em>doing<\/em> to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re nodding your head, Stephanie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes, yes; because I could see it. I could see it when he came home. I could see the conversations that would happen\u2014just the way of thinking was shifting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And Chris, some of what was going on in your own heart and your own thinking\u2014you weren\u2019t sharing with anybody\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but you were starting to question your faith; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Absolutely! I\u2019ve always loved science and apologetics; but as you\u2014again, as you go off to university and get in that life and that realm\u2014I didn\u2019t have any professors, necessarily, that were just shoving it down my throat\u2014you know\u2014godlessness and \u201cHow can you believe that?!\u201d\u2014but slowly, the naivet\u00e9\u2014those things can be subversive to faith if you don\u2019t know what to look for \/ if you don\u2019t\u2014and not sharing that with anyone, and keeping that all inside\u2014because, like I said, I did spend a lot of time alone. Even though I\u2019m an extrovert, I\u2019m a bit of a weird extrovert; because I hide\u2014I\u2019m a <em>great<\/em> hider!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd some of those things, when you live in a household and grew up in community where\u2014not feeling safe about being able to share some of these things that you find\u2014some of these: \u201cHey, I heard this on this documentary. What\u2019s going on with that?\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014not having that checks and balances system \/ the naivet\u00e9 that I had\u2014I didn\u2019t see. The wall gets built behind you, brick by brick; and you don\u2019t see the bricks being laid until you turn around one day and see that there\u2019s this huge wall between you and God or you and your wife. It happened so slowly, at times, that I didn\u2019t even see the bricks that were going down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What you\u2019re really talking about is hanging out with people who have a worldview that is different than someone who has a biblical and a God-centered worldview.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And if you\u2019re going to hang out with those people, they\u2019re going to train you to think differently about circumstances, and about life, and choices than those who are influencing you for Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tParents, who are listening to this\u2014kind of thinking about raising their sons or daughters and going, \u201cI don\u2019t want to see my kids go through that,\u201d\u2014you have to train them in how to think, critically. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know, if Barbara were here, she\u2019d be pounding the table with us around helping your children\u2014helping the singles in your life, who you\u2019re friends with\u2014think about life from the Book\u2014not <em>to<\/em> the Book\u2014but <em>from<\/em> the Bible, allowing the Bible to inform your decisions, and who you hang out with, and how you behave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Stephanie, all of this led to an evening\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014where you were expecting that you and your husband were going over to your family\u2019s house for dinner. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He came home and said, \u201cI need to talk.\u201d What he said was stunning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes; he just said, \u201cHey, can you sit down for a minute?\u201d\u2014a minute \/ ha!\u2014a minute\u2014he needed to tell me something. Literally, what came out of his mouth was: \u201cI don\u2019t believe in God anymore, and I don\u2019t want to be married anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How long had you been married?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> At that point, it was three-and-a-half years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The unthinkable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And blindsided you completely?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Absolutely; I had seen the cracks \/ I had seen little red flags pop up. I didn\u2019t press into them \/ I didn\u2019t confront him about them; because our communication was so poor\u2014I felt like: \u201cWhat\u2019s the point?\u201d\u2014you know\u2014\u201cHe\u2019s just going to get defensive and argue about it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I just assumed\u2014I tend to assume the best about people\u2014to a fault, sometimes. I had just assumed: \u201cHe\u2019s working through it. It\u2019s fine. He\u2019ll get through this.\u201d And about a month before that night that he sat down and told me that, I had started noticing a pulling away, more so than just, \u201cWell, we\u2019re in kind of a rough period.\u201d I noticed a pulling away. I remember even thinking, \u201cI <em>really<\/em> have got to find a way for us to sit down and talk about this.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t get to that point; because that night, he sat me down and I knew <em>nothing<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew nothing of any drugs. I had <em>no<\/em> idea he was at the point that he was with his faith or with our marriage. I had no idea!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You were hiding from your wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> There you go. I\u2019m great at it; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I did want to jump in\u2014I remember several really key moments in my life, on the negative end of the spectrum\u2014and it goes back to the garden, in my opinion \/ you know, with Adam and Eve\u2014the serpent \/ the adversary said, \u201cDid God <em>really <\/em>say that?!\u201d And some of the most pivotal moments in my life that have led to the biggest destructions are when I knew in my heart\u2014you know, we said\u2014we said: \u201cWe will <em>never <\/em>get divorced\u201d; you know? And some of those times\u2014when I remember \/ I look back and I heard the whisper: \u201cDo you <em>really <\/em>have to stay married? Do you really have to?\u201d Those smallest ideas can just blossom in your mind if there\u2019s fertile soil for them to take root in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy life, at that time\u2014what I was doing, who I was hanging out with, the things I was reading, the fact that I was hiding\u2014that seed planted and grew into me sitting her down and saying, \u201cI don\u2019t want to be married anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And how long before you divorced her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> It was very quick after that conversation. First it was marriage; you know?\u2014I thought that was going to be incredible and fix me and be everything. Then it jumps to school and music\u2014and pursuing that. Then it jumps to drugs, because that didn\u2019t do it. The parade of idols and counterfeit gods in my life\u2014I welcomed them all; you know? They just all came down the pike, and nothing satisfied.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, September 25<sup>th<\/sup>. You know, every marriage is going to face some bumps in the road \/ some potholes\u2014sometimes, when maybe you\u2019ve got to pull the car off to the side and get things worked out. Some marriages face detours that are unexpected\u2014and some detours, where you wonder if you\u2019re ever going to get back to the right road, or maybe you don\u2019t make it back on the right road.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019m thinking of this couple. This is a situation where the bridge was out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t a detour\u2014it was out. It\u2019s not often I introduce a couple as having been married since 2006 and 2011. Thanks for having us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m glad you\u2019re here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn case our listeners don\u2019t know, they have formed a group called Out of the Dust. Well, they have two children as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to take you back to when you met. Tell our listeners what happened in Philadelphia, Chris; we\u2019ve got a lot of listeners in Philly that I think will be interested in this\u2014WFIL.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; this was a mission trip that you guys were on; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> It was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. They would be probably interested to know that it felt like a culture shock coming from Nashville\u2014these two little small-town kids going to a big city. We were there to minister and do some VBS. Stephanie and I met at the training. I think she would tell you the guitar that I played probably had a big part in her attraction to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Was his guitar prettier or more handsome than him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Most definitely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> It\u2019s definitely the combination of the two that gets any 16-year-old girl; you know!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Chris, you grew up in a home where your dad left your mom when you were young.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> [Later,] he died when you were 12?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That\u2019s right; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you were raised by your mom. Spiritually, it was kind of up and down for you throughout your young life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> I think so. God really became real to me when I was in high school. I got involved with a lot of ministries, there at the high school I was at. Then, I got into a relationship\u2014like young kids do\u2014and that sort of led to me falling away and turning away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was after that relationship ended that I felt\u2014the crazy story is\u2014I felt God tap me on the shoulder. I\u2019m reluctant to say anything like that, but it was <em>amazing<\/em>\u2014the story of how I ended up on the trip to begin with. We were sitting in the service. I felt a tap on my shoulder. My mom had been bugging me about it; so I turned to her to say, \u201cYes; I know; I know.\u201d I turned, and she was just staring completely forward\u2014her hands were in her lap. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cOh, well, that\u2019s weird!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> And this is as the pastor is saying, \u201cHey, we need some more people to come on the trip.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026on this youth trip.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, Stephanie, what about you? Did you grow up in a Christian home?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You had a faith from a young age?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes; yes. I was blessed to grow up in a very strong, Christian home\u2014very loving home. Both of my parents were also raised in the church\u2014so, really, a comfortable, safe environment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You had signed up early for the mission trip, then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Oh, of course!\u2014as soon as I heard about it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you were going with a noble mission-minded agenda.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You weren\u2019t out scouting boys; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I was not; no! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But somehow, on that trip, the two of you\u2014did one of you sit down on the bus next to the other one?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> We kind of.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> I think so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Well, I\u2014it\u2019s so unlike me, but, you know\u2014I had noticed him in training. I was intrigued by him. I specifically remember picking a seat kind of close to him, just so I could get to know him a little bit. You know, it was a 12-hour drive on a school bus from Nashville. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we ended up\u2014maybe halfway through the trip\u2014groups of us starting playing cards. We ended up in the same group, playing Spades; I think\u2014and kind of never stopped.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> The rest is history.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So how long before he asked you to marry him, and how did he do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> It was, I guess, two years into dating. We were both in college, at that point, at MTSU. We were on a trip with his mom. She took us to\u2014where were we?\u2014Myrtle Beach, I think, South Carolina. He knew I loved the beach\u2014one of my favorite places. So, he got me up at sunrise\u2014we walked the beach, and he got down on one knee and proposed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Chris, because your parents had divorced at a young age, how did that shape your thoughts about marriage? Here you are\u2014diving in, early, to marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was that, in part, because of the divorce that had happened; do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> I don\u2019t really know. I mean, I didn\u2019t have an example. Becoming a father, just in the past couple of years, has helped me sort of deal with and unpack some of that stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I just didn\u2019t really have a day-to-day\u2014my grandfather was <em>incredible<\/em>\u2014he was a huge part of my life; but I didn\u2019t have a steady day-to-day dad coming home \/ mom saying, \u201cHey\u201d; you know?\u2014kissing and all\u2014I didn\u2019t have that. I didn\u2019t have a good example. So I really was just sort of going in blind, you know, with my hands over my eyes, I guess, sort of hoping for the best.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, Stephanie, your parents had to spot that Chris came from a home, where there was a dad missing. Did they have any questions about this relationship and about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Tell them what your mom said!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> So about a week after we came back from the mission trip\u2014or maybe just the Sunday after\u2014my family always had \/ still do\u2014we have Sunday lunch every week after church. It\u2019s our family\u2014my brother and his family; a couple other families, that are not by blood, but they\u2019re family; and all of [us] kids. He came to a Sunday lunch right after the trip. My mom, immediately, when she saw him walk in\u2014she thought, \u201cHe\u2019s trouble.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That was her first impression of me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> That was her first impression.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> And she was right\u2014to her credit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, if I were your dad, one of the questions I would ask you is: \u201cTell me a little bit about Chris\u2019s walk with the Lord. Would you say he\u2019s somebody who\u2019s solid in his faith?\u201d How would you have answered that before he proposed to you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> At that point, you know, when we started dating, we were seniors in high school. We spent hours at night talking on the phone\u2014we would read passages together. God was very much the center of our relationship. We did all sorts of classes at church together. I think we truly were pursuing the Lord and what He wanted for our lives, but that slowly declined.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> And I do\u2014I remember\u2014we would just talk on the phone: \u201cHey, guess what I read today! You\u2019ll never\u2014let me read this to you!\u201d So, we definitely had God in the right place or were trying to keep Him at the center, very early on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So while you were college students\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201420 and 19\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014you stood \u201cbefore God and these witnesses,\u201d looked each other in the eye, and said, \u201c\u2026\u2019til death do us part\u201d; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> We did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Was there something about your wedding day that was out of the ordinary?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Well, being the musician that Chris was, he surprised me with a song that he wrote for me and sang it during the ceremony\u2014had everybody crying in the ceremony. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> It was a bit gratuitous on my part. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Walk over and get your guitar and let\u2019s hear this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Chris, our audience gives us a lot of grace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m sure they\u2019ll give you some too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> I think it was like:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy life is brighter; I breathe lighter;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think\u2014I think that you do too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cWhen I\u2019m with you\u201d? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Does that fit?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Something about:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I couldn\u2019t be prouder\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo say, \u201cForever begins tonight.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr something like that\u2014I don\u2019t know! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So everybody was crying.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were you crying?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> You know\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You had makeup on, so you\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Of course, I was tearing up; but I don\u2019t think I was crying.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, you begin \u201chappily ever after\u201d as college students. I asked you this, when we were talking earlier: \u201cWhen did you start to notice that there were cracks in the foundation of your marriage?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t too long\u2014you know, I would say in the first year of our marriage. Overall, it was great\u2014it was kind of that stereotypical honeymoon phase; but there were definitely things that popped up\u2014both of us coming in, as everybody does in a marriage, coming in with our expectations\u2014some that we were aware of \/ some that we were not aware of. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEspecially for me, coming from the home that I came from\u2014and the home that he came from\u2014him not having that daily picture of what a husband is like in the home, and me having that and expecting him to know that\u2019s how he should be; right?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s how I expected him to be. I expected him to be home when I was home and to not go out all the time with his friends. You know, just different things that I very quickly saw: \u201cOh, okay! This is different than I imagined,\u201d and I think, also, becoming almost prideful about it, like: \u201cWell, he should know better! This is not right! He should know better.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, hold on. He went out with his buddies?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Sure!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014after he married you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> He did!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Like a Friday night?\u2014where you\u2019re both free; and he says: \u201cYou do whatever you want to do. I\u2019m going to go hang out with the guys\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> \u2014after work or\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes! Like I would think \/ I would expect him to come home after work. Instead, he\u2019d want to go out and go hang out with his work buddies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And somebody, along the way, suggested that the two of you guys should go to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> We did! I think that was a couple of years in; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> You\u2019re skipping ahead. In the end, you know, we had some pretty huge potholes that we had to overcome; but at the time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> But there were some great breakthroughs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; we had some huge breakthroughs after that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you remember anything from the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> that was kind of an \u201cAha!\u201d moment for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I think the communication was huge\u2014the session on communication\u2014because we did not deal with conflict well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> We were polar opposites as far as personality. Any test that you take\u2014if there\u2019s a spectrum\u2014then, we\u2019re going to be at the opposite ends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> We\u2019re always opposite.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> \u2014which is beautiful now, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And there did come a point, after you\u2019d been to the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, Stephanie, where you started noticing, maybe, some drifting \/ some isolation that was happening, where you just sensed that something wasn\u2019t right in the relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I did. Some of it was the people that he was hanging out with\u2014people that, just in my spirit, I didn\u2019t feel right about\u2014but, again, our communication was so poor, at that point. If I said anything, he\u2019d get defensive; or I would come across, I don\u2019t know, kind of arrogant about it or judgmental. So then, of course, then he\u2019s getting defensive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t feel comfortable with his friends. He went on a trip with school to Russia; and he did admit to me some drug use that happened then, which was a little scary for me; because that\u2019s something that I just had never been exposed to or expected to have in our marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That is what came out of the FamilyLife conference, by the way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> It did; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s where you fessed up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes; he admitted to that; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; a few years before the big fall-out; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was going on with you?\u2014to be curious about that and to want to experiment with that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That\u2019s the best question you could ask! After we went through what we went through, our pastor gave me a book called <em>Counterfeit Gods <\/em>by Tim Keller\u2014incredible book! It helped me recognize this pattern of idolatry in my life, going from this thing to this thing. Nothing satisfies; so you just keep jumping from one thing to the next; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst, it was marriage; you know? I thought that was going to be incredible and fix me and be everything\u2014and that wasn\u2019t so. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo then, it jumps to identity\u2014and school and music\u2014and pursuing that. Then, it jumps to drugs; because that didn\u2019t do it. So, everything\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> [Quoting from a song lyric] \u201cYou still hadn\u2019t found what you were looking for.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; U2\u2014great reference. Yes; the parade of idols and counterfeit gods in my life\u2014I welcomed them all; you know? They just all came down the pike, and nothing satisfied.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We scooted past it; but 1 Corinthians, Chapter 15, talks about bad company corrupting good morals. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t think we talked much about this; and we probably should, here, on the broadcast\u2014that who you hang out with and who you are kindred spirit with is determinative around the spiritual well-being for your own soul\u2014but also those who are closest to you\u2014if you\u2019re married: your spouse \/ your children. Talk about the influence these friends had on you and how dangerous it was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> That\u2019s great. I was an only child. My mom\u2014I never lived in the neighborhood that I went to school at\u2014so I didn\u2019t have the opportunity to just hang out with a lot of people. I spent a lot of time, alone, as a kid. As we got to college, it was like you\u2019re right there\u2014we\u2019re living on campus; there are friends; we\u2019re in college and married. I have friends at work, now, that live close.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, for the first time in my life\u2014and this isn\u2019t a pity party\u2014this is just sort of where I was at that time\u2014I had friends that I could go hang out with, you know, at a very prime time in my life. The places that I was at were college, and the music industry, and restaurants with servers. I did notice that there was an influence; but at that time, there was a naivet\u00e9 about what it was <em>doing<\/em> to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re nodding your head, Stephanie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes, yes; because I could see it. I could see it when he came home. I could see the conversations that would happen\u2014just the way of thinking was shifting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And Chris, some of what was going on in your own heart and your own thinking\u2014you weren\u2019t sharing with anybody\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but you were starting to question your faith; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Absolutely! I\u2019ve always loved science and apologetics; but as you\u2014again, as you go off to university and get in that life and that realm\u2014I didn\u2019t have any professors, necessarily, that were just shoving it down my throat\u2014you know\u2014godlessness and \u201cHow can you believe that?!\u201d\u2014but slowly, the naivet\u00e9\u2014those things can be subversive to faith if you don\u2019t know what to look for \/ if you don\u2019t\u2014and not sharing that with anyone, and keeping that all inside\u2014because, like I said, I did spend a lot of time alone. Even though I\u2019m an extrovert, I\u2019m a bit of a weird extrovert; because I hide\u2014I\u2019m a <em>great<\/em> hider!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd some of those things, when you live in a household and grew up in community where\u2014not feeling safe about being able to share some of these things that you find\u2014some of these: \u201cHey, I heard this on this documentary. What\u2019s going on with that?\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014not having that checks and balances system \/ the naivet\u00e9 that I had\u2014I didn\u2019t see. The wall gets built behind you, brick by brick; and you don\u2019t see the bricks being laid until you turn around one day and see that there\u2019s this huge wall between you and God or you and your wife. It happened so slowly, at times, that I didn\u2019t even see the bricks that were going down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What you\u2019re really talking about is hanging out with people who have a worldview that is different than someone who has a biblical and a God-centered worldview.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And if you\u2019re going to hang out with those people, they\u2019re going to train you to think differently about circumstances, and about life, and choices than those who are influencing you for Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tParents, who are listening to this\u2014kind of thinking about raising their sons or daughters and going, \u201cI don\u2019t want to see my kids go through that,\u201d\u2014you have to train them in how to think, critically. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know, if Barbara were here, she\u2019d be pounding the table with us around helping your children\u2014helping the singles in your life, who you\u2019re friends with\u2014think about life from the Book\u2014not <em>to<\/em> the Book\u2014but <em>from<\/em> the Bible, allowing the Bible to inform your decisions, and who you hang out with, and how you behave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Stephanie, all of this led to an evening\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014where you were expecting that you and your husband were going over to your family\u2019s house for dinner. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He came home and said, \u201cI need to talk.\u201d What he said was stunning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes; he just said, \u201cHey, can you sit down for a minute?\u201d\u2014a minute \/ ha!\u2014a minute\u2014he needed to tell me something. Literally, what came out of his mouth was: \u201cI don\u2019t believe in God anymore, and I don\u2019t want to be married anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How long had you been married?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> At that point, it was three-and-a-half years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The unthinkable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And blindsided you completely?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Absolutely; I had seen the cracks \/ I had seen little red flags pop up. I didn\u2019t press into them \/ I didn\u2019t confront him about them; because our communication was so poor\u2014I felt like: \u201cWhat\u2019s the point?\u201d\u2014you know\u2014\u201cHe\u2019s just going to get defensive and argue about it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I just assumed\u2014I tend to assume the best about people\u2014to a fault, sometimes. I had just assumed: \u201cHe\u2019s working through it. It\u2019s fine. He\u2019ll get through this.\u201d And about a month before that night that he sat down and told me that, I had started noticing a pulling away, more so than just, \u201cWell, we\u2019re in kind of a rough period.\u201d I noticed a pulling away. I remember even thinking, \u201cI <em>really<\/em> have got to find a way for us to sit down and talk about this.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t get to that point; because that night, he sat me down and I knew <em>nothing<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew nothing of any drugs. I had <em>no<\/em> idea he was at the point that he was with his faith or with our marriage. I had no idea!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You were hiding from your wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> There you go. I\u2019m great at it; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I did want to jump in\u2014I remember several really key moments in my life, on the negative end of the spectrum\u2014and it goes back to the garden, in my opinion \/ you know, with Adam and Eve\u2014the serpent \/ the adversary said, \u201cDid God <em>really <\/em>say that?!\u201d And some of the most pivotal moments in my life that have led to the biggest destructions are when I knew in my heart\u2014you know, we said\u2014we said: \u201cWe will <em>never <\/em>get divorced\u201d; you know? And some of those times\u2014when I remember \/ I look back and I heard the whisper: \u201cDo you <em>really <\/em>have to stay married? Do you really have to?\u201d Those smallest ideas can just blossom in your mind if there\u2019s fertile soil for them to take root in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy life, at that time\u2014what I was doing, who I was hanging out with, the things I was reading, the fact that I was hiding\u2014that seed planted and grew into me sitting her down and saying, \u201cI don\u2019t want to be married anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And how long before you divorced her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> It was very quick after that conversation. I mean, I filed papers within\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> \u2014a few months.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes; as soon as I could find a lawyer; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> At the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, our marriage getaways, we talk about how every marriage is either moving toward oneness or it\u2019s moving toward isolation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what you guys have described here is you getting isolated from your wife, and you allowing him to be isolated\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014without challenging him, and going after him, and confronting him. In isolation, the enemy can convince you of anything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And that\u2019s exactly what happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m just sitting here, thinking about what\u2019s going to be taking place this coming weekend in Tampa, Florida, as couples get together for our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaway in that city. We have a lot of couples who come at various places in their marriage\u2014a lot of couples who are doing well and they simply want to do preventative maintenance on their marriage\u2014but there are couples at various stages of isolation when they show up at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>.
