So, she did what she knew she was supposed to do\u2014she stepped in and cared for that child. Here\u2019s Mona. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>The Bible mandates us to take care of widows and orphans. We don\u2019t have to sit down and discuss. This is what we\u2019re supposed to do. So, when you are reading the Word of God\u2014and you\u2019re taking and living and acting out the Word of God\u2014you don\u2019t have to sit down and vote on it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is a special live edition of <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> on Wednesday, August 9<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine. We\u2019re going to introduce you to James and Mona Harper today and hear about <em>all<\/em> of the kids they\u2019ve cared for. Stay with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe typically do our program from our studios in Little Rock; but occasionally, we hit the road. We go out into the byways and the highways and, sometimes, get a studio audience to join us. We\u2019re doing that again today. We are at one of our favorite places with some of our favorite people. We are here at the Christian Alliance for Orphans Summit, and we\u2019ve got a great studio audience joining us. [Applause and cheering]\u00a0 And we are going to get a chance to meet a remarkable couple. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We are. And you are going to be greatly encouraged by the story you\u2019re about to hear. I\u2019d like you to welcome with me James and Mona Harper all the way from Stone Mountain, Georgia. Would you welcome them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Welcome the Harpers as they come out. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Welcome. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Great to see you guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Good to see you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; good morning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>James and Mona Harper just got in from Missouri, where they performed last night. We\u2019ll hear a little bit about that, but you\u2019re a pastor in Stone Mountain\u2014have been. You have two daughters that you\u2019ve raised. When you guys were dating, you had something very unusual that happened right from the start that\u2019s going to give our audience a chance to get a glimpse into what took place in their marriage. James, what happened?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>Unusual. [Laughter]\u00a0 It was a different day. It\u2019s a long story, and just to bring it home\u2014our first date, she had a strong feeling that she was going to marry a preacher; and I said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Were you already a preacher at that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>I wasn\u2019t a preacher at that time. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, okay. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did that convince you to become a preacher; right there?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You got the call right there; didn\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>No. Actually, there were three reasons why I said, \u201cI\u2019m not the guy.\u201d\u00a0 We were 20 years old; and I said: \u201cI\u2019m not getting married until I\u2019m 27. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cSecondly, I just go to church just to show my faith. Thirdly, no way in the world would I ever be a preacher.\u201d\u00a0 Seven weeks later, I asked her to marry me. Six months later, God called me to preach. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, in the midst of that, she\u2014which she would probably tell her version\u2014but I would say she brought a child along. I said: \u201cOkay. This is\u2014you\u2019re not Mary \/ you\u2019re Mona.\u201d\u00a0 It started from there\u2014that she cared and reached out to children. She brought this child into her home; and from there, we started. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Mona, where did you find that child?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>At the gas station. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Was there a rack of children there?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Well, sort of. She was\u2014I spent my entire life working with children, even when I was a child myself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d seen my family taking care of the neighborhood and taking care of children in the neighborhood. So, it was just natural to me. She was at the gas station, and she was pumping gas. She was nine years old, and she was pumping gas for money. She went on to tell me that she was\u2014her mother was soliciting her for drugs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>My heart was crushed. So, I\u201420 years old\u2014I figured, \u201cIf your mother is selling you for drugs, I wonder how much she\u2019d sell you to me for;\u201d you know?\u00a0 I had a pretty good job: \u201cYour mother doesn\u2019t want you,\u201d or \u201cYour mother really\u2014she doesn\u2019t care for you,\u201d\u2014so, I took her home. Eventually, I made contact with her mother. Her mother really did not want her back, and I kept her. We took her to church. My husband and I introduced her to my husband\u2019s family. My husband\u2019s father was a pastor\u2014introduced her, and everybody fell in love with her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was 20 years old at the time, and my life changed. I was 20, and I had a 9-year-old. She dressed like us. We wore coordinated dresses to church\u2014it was cute. I bought her barrettes and started teaching her\u2014homeschooling her. The interesting part is\u2014when I tried to register her for school, that\u2019s when they told me what I had done was kidnapping. So, I kidnapped my first child at 20. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t know that it was kidnapping. I thought it was kid-loving. I really didn\u2019t know. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>So, I didn\u2019t know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, you started your marriage off with a mindset that: \u201cWe\u2019re going to care for kids\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cif we find them.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cat whatever cost.\u201d\u00a0 You know, I didn\u2019t\u2014I mean, I\u2019m an educated person; but it really didn\u2019t cross my mind. There was a need\u2014there wasn\u2019t anything to discuss. There was a desperate need. There was a child that needed the love that I had to give. So, I didn\u2019t stop and think: \u201cWell, what are the legalities?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDo we need to take a vote?\u00a0 Do I need to go to the Senate, or the Congress, or the White House?\u201d Like: \u201cThis child here is in need. So, I\u2019ll take her and give her what she needs and whatever happens afterwards\u2014duh!\u2014I\u2019ll do it.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you warn James about the size of your heart for these homeless children or these children who were in bad situations?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Anybody that knows me knows the size of my heart for children. So, either you are going to get really close or you\u2019re going to get <em>really<\/em> far because you\u2014anybody that knows me knows, when I walk into a place, I don\u2019t see adults\u2014I don\u2019t remember your names. All I know is children. Children\u2014I have my birthday party, and I invite 75 kids; you know. I do. [Laughter]\u00a0 I don\u2019t invite grownups; you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>James, you were obviously okay with this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014that you were going to marry a woman with a nine-year-old daughter in tow. [Laughter] That\u2019s not how most 20-year-olds want to start their marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>Right. It\u2019s not what we may consider the ideal situation, but what I find to be the ideal situation is following through with God\u2019s plan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>James: <\/strong>That\u2019s the ideal situation. So, it wasn\u2019t in my dream\u2014I didn\u2019t see that. I just saw this beautiful woman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Oh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>That\u2019s who I saw. But I saw her heart, and I knew my heart. It was able to gravitate toward children over time. We just\u2014again, bring in them in\u2014there never was, again, a discussion. It wasn\u2019t: \u201cOkay; this is the last one,\u201d or \u201cThis is what we\u2019re going to do next time.\u201d\u00a0 It never was a discussion. If the need was there, we immediately responded. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, this young woman you kidnapped. [Laughter] Did you care for her all the way through her teen years?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>As a matter of fact, I\u2019m still in touch with her now. She\u2019s 41, and I\u2019m 50. There was a time in her life that she was having some trouble, and she actually called me and asked if my husband and I would take custody of her three children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe didn\u2019t sit down and discuss it \/ we didn\u2019t have a meeting with our children; because\u2014I think it\u2019s kind of like when you see someone save a child from a burning house, and you call them a hero. That\u2019s not a hero. That\u2019s human nature. We, oftentimes, want to call someone heroic for doing their reasonable service. That\u2019s like me calling my husband a hero because he kissed me goodnight. That\u2019s not heroic!\u00a0 That\u2019s what you\u2019re supposed to do. [Laughter]\u00a0 I mean, some things are just <em>reasonable<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the Bible mandates us to take care of widows and orphans. We don\u2019t have to sit down and discuss if we\u2019re going to take care of the widow or take care of the orphan. This is what we\u2019re supposed to do. So, when you are reading the Word of God, and when it\u2019s in your heart, and that Word\u2014you are taking and living it \/ acting out the Word of God\u2014you don\u2019t have to sit down and vote on it. It\u2019s already said that the children need to be cared for\u2014not by the government\u2014oops!\u00a0 Did I say that out loud?\u2014but by the church. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2019s what I wanted to ask you, James. How did your church respond to this over the years \u2014because you started pastoring a church, and they are watching you do this. Love is infectious; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>Yes. The church, over the years\u2014they are very receptive to us bringing children in; but especially, this last\u2014I want to say the last set of children that came in\u2014they\u2019re so dear to our hearts. They just overwhelmed the church to the extent where the church actually\u2014I\u2019d say the church\u2014we have a small fellowship\u2014but the size of our fellowship\u2014everyone is now in the mode and the position to foster or adopt children\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>The whole congregation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>\u2014the whole church. That has <em>never<\/em> happened in the life of our church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There were some special circumstances that caused your church to rise to the occasion in 2014\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014a health issue with you, Mona. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Yes; I was diagnosed with a condition through major surgery. I\u2019ve been sick my entire life\u2014misdiagnosed 15\/20 times. I was\u2014I\u2019m the kind of person, like a lot of moms out here, that\u2014especially moms, we\u2019ll have something wrong with us, and we put it on the back burner when we have children. Somebody say, \u201cAmen.\u201d [Laughter] We don\u2019t complain like\u2014men \/ they don\u2019t complain because they\u2019re scared to go to the doctor\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but moms, we don\u2019t go to the doctor because we\u2019re so busy taking our kids to the doctor. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>We\u2019re not scared \/ we\u2019re just busy working. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>They\u2019re busy\u2014yes; working. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, at any rate, I was diagnosed with a condition that was congenital. It has really changed our lives drastically. I\u2019ve been very ill, and it\u2019s been debilitating and deteriorating my health over the last three or four years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wasn\u2019t\u2014one of the things that hurt me the most was that I wasn\u2019t really able to\u2014I wasn\u2019t even able to take care of myself\u2014not able to dress myself, not able to feed myself, not able to walk and put my own shoes on. It\u2019s one of the top five most painful diseases that there\u2019s really no treatment for, no cure, and relatively new in discovery\u2014and I did not stop serving and taking care of others\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014in fact, in the midst of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>\u2014in the midst of that. My doctors have told me the reason I\u2019m still living is that I keep on giving. In the midst of that, one Sunday after church, I\u2014there were three children that visited our church. And one Sunday after church\u2014I do drive-bys\u2014but not the kind you see on the news\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but I do drive-bys. Everybody knows my vehicle. Everybody calls me, \u201cMomma Mona.\u201d\u00a0 They say, \u201cMomma Mona\u2019s coming down the street. Watch out!\u201d because our church is in a neighborhood that a lot of kids need to be fostered\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014where this work is needed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I go on drives through the neighborhood. I\u2019m looking, making sure everybody is\u2014you know, checking to see if everybody\u2019s naughty or nice\u2014and I\u2019m riding. I\u2019m really sick \/ I can hardly move. So, I find little kids walking down the street with no clothes on\u2014three years old. They happened to be the kids that visited our church before. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, to make a long story short\u2014that day, the lady gave us her three-year-old son; and she said: \u201cI don\u2019t want him anymore. Just take him. I can\u2019t stand him. I hate him.\u201d\u00a0 He grabbed my husband by his leg and he said: \u201cI\u2019m a boy. You\u2019re a boy. Please take me with you.\u201d\u00a0 Mind you, this is like months after they told my husband to put me in hospice and let me die. Two days later\u2014two days later, we call her back. She says, \u201cYou can have his twin sister, and you can have the four-year-old\u201d; and I\u2019m fighting for my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have received so much criticism over the years for taking in so many people because our church is a small church, and there is no salary that my husband gets. Even when he did, sometimes, it was like $350 a month. I had Christians tell me, \u201cWhy would you bring those kids in your house and bring those spirits?\u201d because I knew that there were some things \/ trouble with them; but it didn\u2019t matter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>Didn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>It didn\u2019t matter to them, because I knew that their need was greater than mine. So, there wasn\u2019t anything we had to talk about. [Emotion in voice] I knew I was fighting for my life; but just to let you all know\u2014that whatever obstacle that it is that you\u2019re thinking about: \u201cShould you take children?\u201d\u00a0 Those children had a little doctor\u2019s kit\u2014a little plastic one\u2014and they would wake up in the morning. I could hear their little feet run in through the house, and my husband called them: \u201cLittle feet \/ little feet.\u201d\u00a0 They would run downstairs, and they would take turns. They would be lined up, because I would be in so much pain I couldn\u2019t move. [Emotion in voice] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey would take turns to come in and check my blood pressure, and check my heart rate, and check my temperature and to make sure that Aunt Mona was feeling well\u2014we told them not to call us Mommy and Daddy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I\u2019ll let you know this\u2014they\u2019re not with us anymore\u2014but there were people who told us to put them out because of what they had been exposed to. They were Christians\u2014people who professed Christianity\u2014but to sum it all up\u2014not only did we save them, because the mother had them doing drugs and drinking beer, sitting on the top of the roof of the house. She had hit one of them with the car. They had been burned with cigarettes\u2014and everything \/ they had bruises all over them\u2014but they saved my life, because they gave me a reason to fight when I was so down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when you\u2019re thinking, \u201cIs this for [me]?\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s not just for <em>them<\/em>\u2014but it\u2019s also for <em>you<\/em>; because when you do what God has called you to do, He will bless <em>you<\/em> \/ He will bless <em>you<\/em>. He will bring you out. [Applause] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>A hero\u2014a hero is someone who does their duty in the face of fear. What you all don\u2019t know, in the audience\u2014they\u2019ve cared for 36 children. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I want to do right now is\u2014I want to ask your daughters what they thought about all of this, because they\u2019re here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And by the way, their daughters are famous. Morgan and Jamie Grace\u2014yes; welcome them. [Applause] Alright; so, ladies\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>Hello. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014you\u2019ve been a part of this madness your whole lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>Yes, sir. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>We have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>Since before we were born, it started. So, it\u2019s very normal for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I guess when this is what you grow up with, you just think, \u201cThis is how families function\u201d; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>It really is!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly how it was. I\u2019m the oldest. I\u2019m 27 now, and it was never a shock because\u2014even\u2014I mean, I have vivid memories of the first children that started to come into our home when we were growing up; but even prior to that, it wasn\u2019t abnormal for a kid who just needed\u2014we wouldn\u2019t know the whole story a lot of times; but \u201cThis kid needs a place for tonight.\u201d\u00a0 It was like: \u201cOkay; no questions asked. That\u2019s what has to happen.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When your mom and dad said, \u201cMove over,\u201d weren\u2019t there times it was like: \u201cI don\u2019t want to give up my this or that\u2014room\/space\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>Yes; I remember one time of moving over was quitting gymnastics. There was a\u2014we didn\u2019t have a lot of money, and our parents were able to somehow magically scrape up enough of savings to get both Morgan and I into gymnastics. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, we found out about a family at church\u2014where their kids were not able to pay for groceries\u2014and I don\u2019t know if any of your children are in gymnastics, but it ain\u2019t cheap. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur parents talked to us. They never said, \u201cWe want you to stop gymnastics, because a family at church doesn\u2019t have food.\u201d\u00a0 They just kind of presented the situation. It\u2014I am not trying to be prideful or anything\u2014but for Morgan and I\u2014when that\u2019s a part of your core and that\u2019s a part of how you were raised, it\u2019s a part of your natural instinct to think: \u201cWait!\u00a0 But we have extra money. It\u2019s just going to our cartwheels. We\u2019ll be fine.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>Yes; it never\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Because you ended up being a singer anyway\u2014you\u2019re not even a gymnast!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>I\u2019m clumsy anyway. It\u2019s not like it would have worked!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>Yes; the Lord definitely knew what He was doing; but I know, like, for me, being the oldest in terms of moving over\u2014it was like\u2014you know, I always had to move over for her anyway. [Laughter]\u00a0 So, I was\u2014I do think it may have, in some ways\u2014just in terms of like birth order for the youngest\u2014that could be a challenge, because you\u2019re used to being the baby. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>The first girl was hard for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>Yes; we were actually just talking about that this morning. I was saying that even if\u2014we had some different memories about different children and different dynamics because I was the oldest, and she was the youngest. So, there was definitely some of that, but we always worked through it. We\u2019ve been blessed to stay in touch with a lot of the kids that came in our home. I know that doesn\u2019t always happen for everyone, and we\u2019ve been blessed to be friends with them on Instagram<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>\u2014and Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. That\u2019s a blessing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Morgan, how long have you been married?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>Seven years this October. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Have you and your husband kidnapped anybody?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>We have not!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 It\u2019s a lot to live up to\u2014even just hearing the stories again. I\u2019m just\u2014I\u2019m just back there\u2014I\u2019m like, \u201cOh, I\u2019ve got so much work to do!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, is it something you\u2019d like to do, though?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>Yes; yes. And it\u2019s crazy that even though they were so much younger when you started bringing kids to your home and all that\u2014it\u2019s crazy because Jamie and I, both, most of the places where we play shows\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014which is our full-time job\u2014are for kids. We\u2014as of two shows ago, all three of us, in particular, there was a little girl in foster care\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>\u2014that we couldn\u2019t even focus on our show because she was\u2014it was just an awkward situation. We all picked up on it separately. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>We were like, \u201cLet\u2019s go make that little girl feel special.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s just been crazy how we get to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I know more of this story. I wish we could tell it all. This is what we\u2019re supposed to do. So, when you are reading the Word of God\u2014and you\u2019re taking and living and acting out the Word of God\u2014you don\u2019t have to sit down and vote on it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is a special live edition of <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> on Wednesday, August 9<sup>th<\/sup>. We\u2019re going to introduce you to James and Mona Harper today and hear about <em>all<\/em> of the kids they\u2019ve cared for. Stay with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe typically do our program from our studios in Little Rock; but occasionally, we hit the road. We go out into the byways and the highways and, sometimes, get a studio audience to join us. We\u2019re doing that again today. We are at one of our favorite places with some of our favorite people. We are here at the Christian Alliance for Orphans Summit, and we\u2019ve got a great studio audience joining us. [Applause and cheering]\u00a0 And we are going to get a chance to meet a remarkable couple. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We are. And you are going to be greatly encouraged by the story you\u2019re about to hear. I\u2019d like you to welcome with me James and Mona Harper all the way from Stone Mountain, Georgia. Would you welcome them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Welcome the Harpers as they come out. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Welcome. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Great to see you guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Good to see you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; good morning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>James and Mona Harper just got in from Missouri, where they performed last night. We\u2019ll hear a little bit about that, but you\u2019re a pastor in Stone Mountain\u2014have been. You have two daughters that you\u2019ve raised. When you guys were dating, you had something very unusual that happened right from the start that\u2019s going to give our audience a chance to get a glimpse into what took place in their marriage. James, what happened?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>Unusual. [Laughter]\u00a0 It was a different day. It\u2019s a long story, and just to bring it home\u2014our first date, she had a strong feeling that she was going to marry a preacher; and I said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Were you already a preacher at that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>I wasn\u2019t a preacher at that time. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, okay. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did that convince you to become a preacher; right there?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You got the call right there; didn\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>No. Actually, there were three reasons why I said, \u201cI\u2019m not the guy.\u201d\u00a0 We were 20 years old; and I said: \u201cI\u2019m not getting married until I\u2019m 27. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cSecondly, I just go to church just to show my faith. Thirdly, no way in the world would I ever be a preacher.\u201d\u00a0 Seven weeks later, I asked her to marry me. Six months later, God called me to preach. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, in the midst of that, she\u2014which she would probably tell her version\u2014but I would say she brought a child along. I said: \u201cOkay. This is\u2014you\u2019re not Mary \/ you\u2019re Mona.\u201d\u00a0 It started from there\u2014that she cared and reached out to children. She brought this child into her home; and from there, we started. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Mona, where did you find that child?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>At the gas station. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Was there a rack of children there?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Well, sort of. She was\u2014I spent my entire life working with children, even when I was a child myself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d seen my family taking care of the neighborhood and taking care of children in the neighborhood. So, it was just natural to me. She was at the gas station, and she was pumping gas. She was nine years old, and she was pumping gas for money. She went on to tell me that she was\u2014her mother was soliciting her for drugs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>My heart was crushed. So, I\u201420 years old\u2014I figured, \u201cIf your mother is selling you for drugs, I wonder how much she\u2019d sell you to me for;\u201d you know?\u00a0 I had a pretty good job: \u201cYour mother doesn\u2019t want you,\u201d or \u201cYour mother really\u2014she doesn\u2019t care for you,\u201d\u2014so, I took her home. Eventually, I made contact with her mother. Her mother really did not want her back, and I kept her. We took her to church. My husband and I introduced her to my husband\u2019s family. My husband\u2019s father was a pastor\u2014introduced her, and everybody fell in love with her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was 20 years old at the time, and my life changed. I was 20, and I had a 9-year-old. She dressed like us. We wore coordinated dresses to church\u2014it was cute. I bought her barrettes and started teaching her\u2014homeschooling her. The interesting part is\u2014when I tried to register her for school, that\u2019s when they told me what I had done was kidnapping. So, I kidnapped my first child at 20. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t know that it was kidnapping. I thought it was kid-loving. I really didn\u2019t know. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>So, I didn\u2019t know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, you started your marriage off with a mindset that: \u201cWe\u2019re going to care for kids\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cif we find them.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cat whatever cost.\u201d\u00a0 You know, I didn\u2019t\u2014I mean, I\u2019m an educated person; but it really didn\u2019t cross my mind. There was a need\u2014there wasn\u2019t anything to discuss. There was a desperate need. There was a child that needed the love that I had to give. So, I didn\u2019t stop and think: \u201cWell, what are the legalities?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDo we need to take a vote?\u00a0 Do I need to go to the Senate, or the Congress, or the White House?\u201d Like: \u201cThis child here is in need. So, I\u2019ll take her and give her what she needs and whatever happens afterwards\u2014duh!\u2014I\u2019ll do it.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you warn James about the size of your heart for these homeless children or these children who were in bad situations?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Anybody that knows me knows the size of my heart for children. So, either you are going to get really close or you\u2019re going to get <em>really<\/em> far because you\u2014anybody that knows me knows, when I walk into a place, I don\u2019t see adults\u2014I don\u2019t remember your names. All I know is children. Children\u2014I have my birthday party, and I invite 75 kids; you know. I do. [Laughter]\u00a0 I don\u2019t invite grownups; you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>James, you were obviously okay with this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014that you were going to marry a woman with a nine-year-old daughter in tow. [Laughter] That\u2019s not how most 20-year-olds want to start their marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>Right. It\u2019s not what we may consider the ideal situation, but what I find to be the ideal situation is following through with God\u2019s plan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>James: <\/strong>That\u2019s the ideal situation. So, it wasn\u2019t in my dream\u2014I didn\u2019t see that. I just saw this beautiful woman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Oh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>That\u2019s who I saw. But I saw her heart, and I knew my heart. It was able to gravitate toward children over time. We just\u2014again, bring in them in\u2014there never was, again, a discussion. It wasn\u2019t: \u201cOkay; this is the last one,\u201d or \u201cThis is what we\u2019re going to do next time.\u201d\u00a0 It never was a discussion. If the need was there, we immediately responded. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, this young woman you kidnapped. [Laughter] Did you care for her all the way through her teen years?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>As a matter of fact, I\u2019m still in touch with her now. She\u2019s 41, and I\u2019m 50. There was a time in her life that she was having some trouble, and she actually called me and asked if my husband and I would take custody of her three children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe didn\u2019t sit down and discuss it \/ we didn\u2019t have a meeting with our children; because\u2014I think it\u2019s kind of like when you see someone save a child from a burning house, and you call them a hero. That\u2019s not a hero. That\u2019s human nature. We, oftentimes, want to call someone heroic for doing their reasonable service. That\u2019s like me calling my husband a hero because he kissed me goodnight. That\u2019s not heroic!\u00a0 That\u2019s what you\u2019re supposed to do. [Laughter]\u00a0 I mean, some things are just <em>reasonable<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the Bible mandates us to take care of widows and orphans. We don\u2019t have to sit down and discuss if we\u2019re going to take care of the widow or take care of the orphan. This is what we\u2019re supposed to do. So, when you are reading the Word of God, and when it\u2019s in your heart, and that Word\u2014you are taking and living it \/ acting out the Word of God\u2014you don\u2019t have to sit down and vote on it. It\u2019s already said that the children need to be cared for\u2014not by the government\u2014oops!\u00a0 Did I say that out loud?\u2014but by the church. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2019s what I wanted to ask you, James. How did your church respond to this over the years \u2014because you started pastoring a church, and they are watching you do this. Love is infectious; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>Yes. The church, over the years\u2014they are very receptive to us bringing children in; but especially, this last\u2014I want to say the last set of children that came in\u2014they\u2019re so dear to our hearts. They just overwhelmed the church to the extent where the church actually\u2014I\u2019d say the church\u2014we have a small fellowship\u2014but the size of our fellowship\u2014everyone is now in the mode and the position to foster or adopt children\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>The whole congregation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>\u2014the whole church. That has <em>never<\/em> happened in the life of our church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There were some special circumstances that caused your church to rise to the occasion in 2014\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014a health issue with you, Mona. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Yes; I was diagnosed with a condition through major surgery. I\u2019ve been sick my entire life\u2014misdiagnosed 15\/20 times. I was\u2014I\u2019m the kind of person, like a lot of moms out here, that\u2014especially moms, we\u2019ll have something wrong with us, and we put it on the back burner when we have children. Somebody say, \u201cAmen.\u201d [Laughter] We don\u2019t complain like\u2014men \/ they don\u2019t complain because they\u2019re scared to go to the doctor\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but moms, we don\u2019t go to the doctor because we\u2019re so busy taking our kids to the doctor. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>We\u2019re not scared \/ we\u2019re just busy working. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>They\u2019re busy\u2014yes; working. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, at any rate, I was diagnosed with a condition that was congenital. It has really changed our lives drastically. I\u2019ve been very ill, and it\u2019s been debilitating and deteriorating my health over the last three or four years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wasn\u2019t\u2014one of the things that hurt me the most was that I wasn\u2019t really able to\u2014I wasn\u2019t even able to take care of myself\u2014not able to dress myself, not able to feed myself, not able to walk and put my own shoes on. It\u2019s one of the top five most painful diseases that there\u2019s really no treatment for, no cure, and relatively new in discovery\u2014and I did not stop serving and taking care of others\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014in fact, in the midst of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>\u2014in the midst of that. My doctors have told me the reason I\u2019m still living is that I keep on giving. In the midst of that, one Sunday after church, I\u2014there were three children that visited our church. And one Sunday after church\u2014I do drive-bys\u2014but not the kind you see on the news\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but I do drive-bys. Everybody knows my vehicle. Everybody calls me, \u201cMomma Mona.\u201d\u00a0 They say, \u201cMomma Mona\u2019s coming down the street. Watch out!\u201d because our church is in a neighborhood that a lot of kids need to be fostered\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014where this work is needed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I go on drives through the neighborhood. I\u2019m looking, making sure everybody is\u2014you know, checking to see if everybody\u2019s naughty or nice\u2014and I\u2019m riding. I\u2019m really sick \/ I can hardly move. So, I find little kids walking down the street with no clothes on\u2014three years old. They happened to be the kids that visited our church before. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, to make a long story short\u2014that day, the lady gave us her three-year-old son; and she said: \u201cI don\u2019t want him anymore. Just take him. I can\u2019t stand him. I hate him.\u201d\u00a0 He grabbed my husband by his leg and he said: \u201cI\u2019m a boy. You\u2019re a boy. Please take me with you.\u201d\u00a0 Mind you, this is like months after they told my husband to put me in hospice and let me die. Two days later\u2014two days later, we call her back. She says, \u201cYou can have his twin sister, and you can have the four-year-old\u201d; and I\u2019m fighting for my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have received so much criticism over the years for taking in so many people because our church is a small church, and there is no salary that my husband gets. Even when he did, sometimes, it was like $350 a month. I had Christians tell me, \u201cWhy would you bring those kids in your house and bring those spirits?\u201d because I knew that there were some things \/ trouble with them; but it didn\u2019t matter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James: <\/strong>Didn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>It didn\u2019t matter to them, because I knew that their need was greater than mine. So, there wasn\u2019t anything we had to talk about. [Emotion in voice] I knew I was fighting for my life; but just to let you all know\u2014that whatever obstacle that it is that you\u2019re thinking about: \u201cShould you take children?\u201d\u00a0 Those children had a little doctor\u2019s kit\u2014a little plastic one\u2014and they would wake up in the morning. I could hear their little feet run in through the house, and my husband called them: \u201cLittle feet \/ little feet.\u201d\u00a0 They would run downstairs, and they would take turns. They would be lined up, because I would be in so much pain I couldn\u2019t move. [Emotion in voice] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey would take turns to come in and check my blood pressure, and check my heart rate, and check my temperature and to make sure that Aunt Mona was feeling well\u2014we told them not to call us Mommy and Daddy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I\u2019ll let you know this\u2014they\u2019re not with us anymore\u2014but there were people who told us to put them out because of what they had been exposed to. They were Christians\u2014people who professed Christianity\u2014but to sum it all up\u2014not only did we save them, because the mother had them doing drugs and drinking beer, sitting on the top of the roof of the house. She had hit one of them with the car. They had been burned with cigarettes\u2014and everything \/ they had bruises all over them\u2014but they saved my life, because they gave me a reason to fight when I was so down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when you\u2019re thinking, \u201cIs this for [me]?\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s not just for <em>them<\/em>\u2014but it\u2019s also for <em>you<\/em>; because when you do what God has called you to do, He will bless <em>you<\/em> \/ He will bless <em>you<\/em>. He will bring you out. [Applause] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>A hero\u2014a hero is someone who does their duty in the face of fear. What you all don\u2019t know, in the audience\u2014they\u2019ve cared for 36 children. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I want to do right now is\u2014I want to ask your daughters what they thought about all of this, because they\u2019re here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And by the way, their daughters are famous. Morgan and Jamie Grace\u2014yes; welcome them. [Applause] Alright; so, ladies\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>Hello. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014you\u2019ve been a part of this madness your whole lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>Yes, sir. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>We have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>Since before we were born, it started. So, it\u2019s very normal for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I guess when this is what you grow up with, you just think, \u201cThis is how families function\u201d; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>It really is!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly how it was. I\u2019m the oldest. I\u2019m 27 now, and it was never a shock because\u2014even\u2014I mean, I have vivid memories of the first children that started to come into our home when we were growing up; but even prior to that, it wasn\u2019t abnormal for a kid who just needed\u2014we wouldn\u2019t know the whole story a lot of times; but \u201cThis kid needs a place for tonight.\u201d\u00a0 It was like: \u201cOkay; no questions asked. That\u2019s what has to happen.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When your mom and dad said, \u201cMove over,\u201d weren\u2019t there times it was like: \u201cI don\u2019t want to give up my this or that\u2014room\/space\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>Yes; I remember one time of moving over was quitting gymnastics. There was a\u2014we didn\u2019t have a lot of money, and our parents were able to somehow magically scrape up enough of savings to get both Morgan and I into gymnastics. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, we found out about a family at church\u2014where their kids were not able to pay for groceries\u2014and I don\u2019t know if any of your children are in gymnastics, but it ain\u2019t cheap. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur parents talked to us. They never said, \u201cWe want you to stop gymnastics, because a family at church doesn\u2019t have food.\u201d\u00a0 They just kind of presented the situation. It\u2014I am not trying to be prideful or anything\u2014but for Morgan and I\u2014when that\u2019s a part of your core and that\u2019s a part of how you were raised, it\u2019s a part of your natural instinct to think: \u201cWait!\u00a0 But we have extra money. It\u2019s just going to our cartwheels. We\u2019ll be fine.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>Yes; it never\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mona: <\/strong>Because you ended up being a singer anyway\u2014you\u2019re not even a gymnast!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>I\u2019m clumsy anyway. It\u2019s not like it would have worked!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>Yes; the Lord definitely knew what He was doing; but I know, like, for me, being the oldest in terms of moving over\u2014it was like\u2014you know, I always had to move over for her anyway. [Laughter]\u00a0 So, I was\u2014I do think it may have, in some ways\u2014just in terms of like birth order for the youngest\u2014that could be a challenge, because you\u2019re used to being the baby. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>The first girl was hard for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>Yes; we were actually just talking about that this morning. I was saying that even if\u2014we had some different memories about different children and different dynamics because I was the oldest, and she was the youngest. So, there was definitely some of that, but we always worked through it. We\u2019ve been blessed to stay in touch with a lot of the kids that came in our home. I know that doesn\u2019t always happen for everyone, and we\u2019ve been blessed to be friends with them on Instagram<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>\u2014and Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. That\u2019s a blessing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Morgan, how long have you been married?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>Seven years this October. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Have you and your husband kidnapped anybody?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>We have not!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 It\u2019s a lot to live up to\u2014even just hearing the stories again. I\u2019m just\u2014I\u2019m just back there\u2014I\u2019m like, \u201cOh, I\u2019ve got so much work to do!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, is it something you\u2019d like to do, though?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>Yes; yes. And it\u2019s crazy that even though they were so much younger when you started bringing kids to your home and all that\u2014it\u2019s crazy because Jamie and I, both, most of the places where we play shows\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014which is our full-time job\u2014are for kids. We\u2014as of two shows ago, all three of us, in particular, there was a little girl in foster care\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>\u2014that we couldn\u2019t even focus on our show because she was\u2014it was just an awkward situation. We all picked up on it separately. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jamie Grace: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Morgan: <\/strong>We were like, \u201cLet\u2019s go make that little girl feel special.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s just been crazy how we get to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I know more of this story. I wish we could tell it all.
