Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf our listeners don\u2019t know what James 1:27 says, they just haven\u2019t been paying attention; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, the Bible talks about pure and undefiled religion. It\u2019s talking about something that is close to God\u2019s heart that reflects who He is. It\u2019s someone who goes near the orphan\u2014cares for their needs\u2014and also the widows.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a real champion with us today who cares for the widows and the orphans. Before I tell you who he is, he just recited, Bob\u2014I have never seen you as mesmerized in all\u2014in 25 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was pretty spellbinding.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014in 25 years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want our listeners to turn their radios up just a little bit, or their iPod, or their computer, and listen to a rendition of the Gettysburg Address like you\u2019ve never heard before. Hip to the cool groove of liberty, and solid sent with the ace lick that all [the studs, chicks], cats and kitties, red, white, or blue is created level in front. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you heard that\u2014when did you hear that?\u2014in high school?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>High school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you committed it to memory?\u00a0 You have a problem that Bob has. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It is, apparently, because I looked it up online. There was a comedian named Lord Buckley\u2014did you know this?\u2014and this is his rendition of the Gettysburg Address. I found it in a book on Google. You put it to memory, and you really\u2014you are really a frustrated radio guy\u2014you sat down in front of a microphone and thought [speaking in a blue\u2019s accent], \u201cHey, you cats and kittens out there in radio-land.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>The problem is\u2014Bob will have it committed to memory before sunset today. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>[Speaking in a blue\u2019s voice] \u201cFour hits and seven licks ago\u2026\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, that was the voice of JT Olson, the Founder and Executive Director of Both Hands, which is a ministry to both orphans and widows. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExplain what Both Hands does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>We help families raise money for adoptions. We do it by helping them organize a work party among their friends, and they spend the day serving a widow. The way they raise money is \u2014they send letters out to people, saying, \u201cWould you sponsor me for the day?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So you\u2019ve helped over 700 widows and 775 orphans.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes; the numbers change every weekend. I think the numbers for orphans are: 799 kids are no longer orphans and 739 widows have been blessed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The impetus for this comes out of the verse we were talking about; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>James 1:27\u2014which says pure and undefiled religion is to help the widow and the orphan in their distress. How did this get weighty on your heart?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> story. I was on the board on Bethany Christian Services in Nashville\u2014their local board\u2014and my job one year was to do a fundraiser, you know. I chose to do a golf fundraiser, where you mail letters out and say, \u201cWould you sponsor me?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did what I was supposed to do\u2014mail letters out. Nice cause, but not my money.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow; wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, they say the wounds of a friend bring healing; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Every time I read that Proverb, I think of him; and I think of Bill Iverson and his courage to say what was on his mind, you know. It really hurt my feelings; but at the same time, I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s a <em>really<\/em> good idea.\u201d You know, when I called him a couple days later, and we talked about it and laughed about it\u2014he still didn\u2019t give me any money. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you ended up starting a ministry, then, because of that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>You know, it hit me as, \u201cWhat a great idea.\u201d Whenever I saw a fundraiser after that, whether it be a 5K or a golf tournament, I kept asking myself, if they were working on a widow\u2019s house would that be more compelling? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould it mean more? I just couldn\u2019t figure out the other piece to it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I\u2019m in church one day, a couple years later. I run into a good friend of mine, Don Meyer. I say, \u201cDon, what\u2019s up?\u201d He said, \u201cI\u2019m adopting four kids from Moldova.\u201d I\u2019ve adopted; so I knew it was going to be expensive. I said, \u201cHow much is that going to cost?\u201d He said, \u201cWell, it\u2019s about $65,000.\u201d I said, \u201cDo you have any idea how you\u2019re going to raise that?\u201d He said, \u201cNo\u201d; and I said, \u201cI think I have an idea.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe and I got together\u2014put a plan together\u2014we recruited about 13\/14 guys. We all mailed letters out to everyone we knew, saying: \u201cWould you sponsor me while I work on this widow\u2019s house? All the money we raise is going to go towards the cost of this adoption to get these four kids home from Moldova.\u201d We sent letters out. I found a widow in Nashville who needed help\u2014got all the supplies donated \/ we didn\u2019t spend any money.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Cool; cool.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>And we spent the day working on\u00a0 Mrs. Seal\u2019s house. When it was over, we\u2019d raised over $70,000.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So the cost of fundraising was zero, and you raised money to be able to help this guy get four kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes; and a widow was blessed beyond her wildest imagination.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What did you do for her house?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>We put some siding on \/ we took down a chimney that was about to fall off her roof\u2014we got that out of there safely. We took down a dead tree, we painted some of her house, we replaced gas burners, and we had somebody donate a furnace\u2014the kind that you see in a hotel\u2014we put that in her house, in the wall, so it made it a lot safer. We de-cluttered her room. We fixed up the back of her house\u2014I mean, it was great.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Is this your background? Do you do remodeling and home care?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>No! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He\u2019s a golfer!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s a good point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>My wife was laughing right now. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How did you even know how to do any of these things?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t. I didn\u2019t know how to do them, but I figured I knew people who did that. I was in a job where I was actually working in the construction industry\u2014I was more in the recruiting industry\u2014but you know, I knew people who did stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. And you could call a friend who had a friend; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes. Now, when it comes to pressure-washing, I\u2019m a gifted pressure-washer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>\u201cOkay; I can do that.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: \u201c<\/strong>That sounds a little within my skill set.\u201d That\u2019s pretty good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, JT has written a book that\u2019s subtitled: <em>Paying It Forward with Both Hands. <\/em>The name of the book is<em> The Orphan, the Widow, and Me.<\/em> I want to go to the <em>Me<\/em>, which is you. I want to ask you what your story is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Well, you know, it\u2019s interesting; because when Don looked at me and he said, \u201cI\u2019m adopting these four kids from Moldova,\u201d and I said, \u201cWhat happened, Don?\u201d He said: \u201cI went over there on a mission with this group called \u2018Sweet Sleep.\u2019 We deliver beds to orphanages in Moldova. He said, \u201cI fell in love with this boy\u2014this 11-year-old boy, George\u2014we just became inseparable. We started the adoption process. In the process, we found out he has three siblings.\u201d Don looked at me and he said, \u201cWe\u2019re not going to break the siblings up.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat resonated with me, because it took me back to when I was 12 years old. We were living on a farm in northeastern Iowa\u2014there were five of us kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember\u2014in the spring of \u201969, my mom and dad left to go celebrate their 16<sup>th<\/sup> wedding anniversary. Us kids were kind of farmed out to different places, you know. I remember Saturday night we were being brought home because Mom and Dad were coming home. I\u2019d played all that day in my friend\u2019s barn\u2014I was pretty dirty, and I had to go down in the basement. My older brother went upstairs. I remember sitting in this chair, bending over, unlacing my boots. My brother comes down the stairs. I look up at him and\u2014I was excited\u2014I said, \u201cAre Mom and Dad home?!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe looked at me and he said, \u201cMom and Dad are dead.\u201d I said, \u201cWhat?!\u201d He said: \u201cMom and Dad are dead. They were killed in a car accident an hour ago\u201d; and he walked upstairs. I remember hitting the floor\u2014I remember that moment. It stays in your head the rest of your life\u2014that\u2019s what I would call an earth-shattering moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember hitting the floor, and I remember thinking about\u2014the first thought that went through my head was memories of my dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, the thought that goes through you is: \u201cWhat\u2019s going to happen to us? I\u2019m never going to see Mom and Dad again.\u201d I know what it\u2019s like! I know what it\u2019s like to wake up the next morning\u2014and for the first 30 seconds, you think it\u2019s a dream; and then the next 15 seconds you fight with everything you\u2019ve got to make sure it\u2019s a dream; and then it hits you: \u201cThis is not a dream. This is my reality, and I\u2019m never going to see Mom and Dad again this side of heaven.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen Don looked at me and he said, \u201cWe\u2019re not going to break the siblings up,\u201d I\u2019m the just-right guy to say that to; because you know what? I know what it\u2019s like to be an orphan; but I know what it\u2019s like to be rescued because, three months before this accident, my mom and dad changed their will\u2014 that if anything would happen to them, us five kids would go live with my aunt and uncle\u2014Brianna and Ralph Pfeifer in Milwaukee\u2014they live in a very nice suburb in Milwaukee. They had three kids of their own, and they changed their will too; it was vice versa.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, like I said\u2014they had three kids \/ they took all five of us in. They didn\u2019t break up the siblings either. The stepped up\u2014they\u2019re heroes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What was it like for the five of you?\u2014from out in the farmlands to move into the suburbs in Milwaukee with what couldn\u2019t have been a very big house?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>My two little sisters\u2014they were five and three at the time of the accident\u2014they moved in right away with my aunt and uncle. Us three boys\u2014we stayed on the farm to finish the school year out; because my dad had a brother, Uncle Clifford\u2014he was a bachelor \/ he lived with us. [We] three boys stayed on the farm to help Uncle Cliff with chores, and to manage the farm, and to finish the school year out. I think they probably thought that much culture shock would be hard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So you did end up moving, finally, to the suburbs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But then it was realized that you had a farm that either needed to produce or was going to be in jeopardy. So the family you were living with took you back to the farm that summer to work the land.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You, as a young man, helped do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes; the three boys\u2014us three boys did it. Yes; we helped run the farm with Uncle Clifford.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Were you worried? I mean, were you worried about how all that was going to\u2014the planting, the cultivation, the harvesting? I mean, let\u2019s face it\u2014you were young men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes; and that was during the school year\u2014I remember, because the crops were planted before the summertime. I was concerned about it; because you\u2019re wondering: \u201cUncle Clifford can\u2019t do all this,\u201d\u2014Uncle Clifford was 63 years old at the time of the accident. You know, we drove tractors; but we weren\u2019t skilled enough to plant\u2014you know, you have to be a little bit better to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember one day getting off the bus, and it was just amazing\u2014our bus stop was about half a mile from the house, and it\u2019s uphill. You can see a lot of the farm. I remember\u2014it was a beautiful April day\u2014getting off the bus one day\u2014and there were all our neighbors in our fields with their tractors, and their plows, and their planters, and their discs and their drags\u2014and that\u2019s how they did it back then. They were planting our crops. When you\u2019re a farm kid, you know whose tractor belongs to whom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember there were probably seven or eight men out there planting our crops, taking care of their buddy\u2019s kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That had to have an incredible impact on you, as a young man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes; it made me realize, \u201cThis is what people do.\u201d I mean, it\u2019s kind of what you grow up with in a agricultural farm society\u2014you know, when someone\u2019s cows get out, you go help them get them in; and stuff like that\u2014but <em>that<\/em> was just <em>amazing<\/em>. I mean, they took their day and planted our crops.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m just thinking of three young men who\u2019ve lost their daddy. [Emotion in voice] I mean, it wasn\u2019t like you just had some friends show up\u2014they showed up in the midst of your loss.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Right. They showed up and showed us love. They just\u2014it was just one of those\u2014the way the community just kind of came together\u2014it was like: \u201cWe got your back! We care about the Olson boys \/ the Olson girls.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The loss of your parents\u2014how did that shape your thinking about who God is, and about life, and about whether things are fair; and did it shake any of what you\u2019d learned, or did you just figure, like Job did: \u201cThe Lord gives; the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>You know, I was in seventh grade. I don\u2019t remember exactly, from a theological perspective, what I was thinking. I remember some things\u2014I remember something that a lady said the night of the visitation. It\u2019s not theologically-sound at all, but she said something that just for some reason ministered to me\u2014she said, \u201cI guess God needed your parents more than we did.\u201d You know, that\u2019s not really sound; but for some reason, that made\u2014it hit me \/ it didn\u2019t strike me bad\u2014it was like, \u201cOkay.\u201d You know, \u201cI understand that, because I loved them too\u201d; and I loved them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I don\u2019t know\u2014you just keep moving on. I remember there was a Sunday school teacher. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember asking her, about four or five weeks after the accident, you know: \u201cCan people in heaven look down?\u201d I can\u2019t remember an answer; but I remember how it made me feel, and it made me feel like, \u201cIt\u2019s going to be okay.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You started growing up in a larger city \/ larger community, and you got busted in the ninth grade with a dirty novel that you had hidden inside your science book. What happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Well, I was in ninth grade, you know, and\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Is there any other explanation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Enough said; right? No; I had a buddy who\u2019d gotten back from a trip to New York for spring break. He found these things\u2014he brought them back, and he gave me one. I was acting up in class and Mr. Fairgroot [spelling uncertain]\u2014he said: \u201cThat\u2019s enough, Olson. Back there in the back room.\u201d So he sent me out of class. I was sitting back there in the back\u2014I was supposed to be studying my thing\u2014but Bob had given me this book, and so I was reading. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe walked in and looked at me and he saw it\u2014and he saw what happened\u2014he said, \u201cOkay, that\u2019s it\u2014down to the principal\u2019s office.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I got into a little trouble when I got home that night. I\u2019ll never forget that, though; because I walked by my uncle, whose\u2014his business was in the basement, and our bedroom was in the basement that they had. I walked by his office, kind of tiptoeing; but he saw me. I was sitting there about five or six seconds\u2014he says, \u201cJeff, you want to come in here a minute?\u201d I\u2019m thinking: \u201cOh, no! The principal\u2014they did call.\u201d So I remember he sat me down and said, \u201cThe principal called today\u2014said you got in some trouble.\u201d I said, \u201cYes; so what?\u201d\u2014I gave him a flip answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>And I remember he grabbed my shoulder\u2014pulled me\u2014and said: \u201cListen, buddy; I know it\u2019s been tough. I know that you have a situation that probably most people don\u2019t have. But you know, we have nine people in this family pulling one way and you pulling the other, and all you\u2019re doing is feeling sorry for yourself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYou bet it\u2019s time to shape up or ship out, because you can feel sorry for yourself as long as you want; but sooner or later, you\u2019re going to find you\u2019re the only person feeling sorry for you. So it\u2019s time to change your attitude.\u201d I just\u2014I mean, that\u2019s what I needed to hear.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I know that\u2019s a story from a long time ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But I have to believe there are some dads, grandmas, uncles, moms, who may need to square up with a young man or a young lady who\u2019s being sassy, you know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They\u2019re creating a cross-current, or maybe a current in the wrong direction, as your uncle said. Call them up. Don\u2019t just let them destroy their lives. It could be a key defining moment. Was it one for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes, because I noticed it. He was right\u2014I was feeling sorry. I was moping \/ I was walking around, feeling sorry for myself: \u201cPoor, poor me.\u201d It wasn\u2019t getting me anywhere. I did notice a change\u2014I started being a little more happy. I think he probably noticed it too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo that was one of those fence-post pivotal big moments in life that you kind of remember.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, when it got time to go to college, what did you decide?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>I decided that University of Wisconsin, Madison, was a pretty good place to party. That\u2019s where I ended up going, and that\u2019s why I ended up going there; because my last couple years of high school\u2014I refer to them as \u201cthe lost years\u201d\u2014you know, just got in some stuff that probably wasn\u2019t really healthy and got into partying a lot. I still had a lot of friends, and it was great; but I wasn\u2019t headed in the right direction. I went to college, and I remember that I was aimless \/ I didn\u2019t have a lot of purpose.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, how\u2019d you go to college?\u2014I mean, your uncle had eight kids?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Well, I worked. I had a summer job\u2014I mean, you know, in high school, I had a job\u2014I worked during the school year \/ I probably worked about 20\/24 hours a week. In the summertime, I worked 40 hours a week\u2014I had lawn jobs\u2014and I saved money. Back then, tuition, I think, at Madison was $250 a semester. So, I mean, I saved good money. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was also just a little bit of money from some lawsuit from the accident \/ plus, I was an orphan; and there was Social Security. So, between all that, I was able to afford to go to school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And during college, you had people, who saw you were headed in the wrong direction, who tried to get you pointed back in the right direction. You had an uncle who tried to get you turned around\u2014that didn\u2019t work\u2014but there were others who came along and tried to get you rerouted too; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes. Uncle Ralph always encouraged me whenever I\u2019d come home a little too often to party in Milwaukee\u2014he said: \u201cYou have to get back to school. You have to study. You have to do something with your life.\u201d It just didn\u2019t make any sense; but at one point, there in the spring of 1975, is when I heard about this company selling books, door to door\u2014the Southwestern Company. My roommate came back and said, \u201cI signed up to sell books.\u201d I said, \u201cYou\u2019re crazy,\u201d\u2014I made fun of him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen he told me a little bit more about it and found out it was just more about working nights, selling. I said, \u201cWell, maybe I\u2019ll go hear about it.\u201d And I ended up saying, \u201cYes; I think I can do this.\u201d Literally, that summer job changed my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Because?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>I went out\u2014and instead of going back home and being with all my friends who were partying\u2014I went to be around people who were working 75 to 80 hours a week, and knocking on doors and learning how to handle myself. I mean, that summer I think met with 3,000 different families. I learned how to handle myself\u2014learned how to make a good first impression \/ learned how to make a presentation. You know, I learned a lot\u2014more than I would have working at the factory in Milwaukee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You grew up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>[Laughter] Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And he also made a lot of cash too; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>I made some money; yes, I was able to afford school; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So okay; you\u2019re in the process of growing up that summer. What was the takeaway?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>There were several; but the biggest one was\u2014I remember having, at the end of the summertime, my manager, who\u2019d gotten me into it\u2014we were driving away from a Sunday meeting, and I was in Los Angeles. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d never been to the west coast\u2014never seen the ocean \/ never did any of that stuff. I\u2019d had a <em>great<\/em> summer, and I learned a lot. Dick was driving \/ I was in the passenger\u2019s side. I\u2019m watching Los Angeles go by\u2014all this stuff I had seen for the summertime\u2014it was <em>great<\/em>. I looked at Dick and I said: \u201cDick, I just want to thank you for everything you\u2019ve done. You\u2019ve put up with me, you\u2019ve helped me, you\u2019ve helped motivate me, you\u2019ve taught me, and I could not have done this without your help.\u201d He looked at me and he says, \u201cOh, you could have done it without my help.\u201d I said, \u201cNo\u201d; and he said, \u201cWell, you\u2019re welcome.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember turning back and watching the city go by me. The thought hit me, \u201cHe must really feel <em>great<\/em>, because I just thanked him for something that changed my life. If he doesn\u2019t feel great, it\u2019s because I haven\u2019t effectively communicated to him the importance of what he did.\u201d Then it hit me, \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be great if somebody could feel that way about JT Olson someday?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>It was powerful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I have a feeling there are a few. It\u2019s talking about something that is close to God\u2019s heart that reflects who He is. It\u2019s someone who goes near the orphan\u2014cares for their needs\u2014and also the widows.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a real champion with us today who cares for the widows and the orphans. Before I tell you who he is, he just recited, Bob\u2014I have never seen you as mesmerized in all\u2014in 25 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was pretty spellbinding.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014in 25 years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want our listeners to turn their radios up just a little bit, or their iPod, or their computer, and listen to a rendition of the Gettysburg Address like you\u2019ve never heard before. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you heard that\u2014when did you hear that?\u2014in high school?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>High school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you committed it to memory?\u00a0 You have a problem that Bob has. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It is, apparently, because I looked it up online. There was a comedian named Lord Buckley\u2014did you know this?\u2014and this is his rendition of the Gettysburg Address. I found it in a book on Google. You put it to memory, and you really\u2014you are really a frustrated radio guy\u2014you sat down in front of a microphone and thought [speaking in a blue\u2019s accent], \u201cHey, you cats and kittens out there in radio-land.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>The problem is\u2014Bob will have it committed to memory before sunset today. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>[Speaking in a blue\u2019s voice] \u201cFour hits and seven licks ago\u2026\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, that was the voice of JT Olson, the Founder and Executive Director of Both Hands, which is a ministry to both orphans and widows. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExplain what Both Hands does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>We help families raise money for adoptions. We do it by helping them organize a work party among their friends, and they spend the day serving a widow. The way they raise money is \u2014they send letters out to people, saying, \u201cWould you sponsor me for the day?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So you\u2019ve helped over 700 widows and 775 orphans.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes; the numbers change every weekend. I think the numbers for orphans are: 799 kids are no longer orphans and 739 widows have been blessed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The impetus for this comes out of the verse we were talking about; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>James 1:27\u2014which says pure and undefiled religion is to help the widow and the orphan in their distress. How did this get weighty on your heart?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> story. I was on the board on Bethany Christian Services in Nashville\u2014their local board\u2014and my job one year was to do a fundraiser, you know. I chose to do a golf fundraiser, where you mail letters out and say, \u201cWould you sponsor me?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did what I was supposed to do\u2014mail letters out. Nice cause, but not my money.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow; wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, they say the wounds of a friend bring healing; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Every time I read that Proverb, I think of him; and I think of Bill Iverson and his courage to say what was on his mind, you know. It really hurt my feelings; but at the same time, I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s a <em>really<\/em> good idea.\u201d You know, when I called him a couple days later, and we talked about it and laughed about it\u2014he still didn\u2019t give me any money. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you ended up starting a ministry, then, because of that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>You know, it hit me as, \u201cWhat a great idea.\u201d Whenever I saw a fundraiser after that, whether it be a 5K or a golf tournament, I kept asking myself, if they were working on a widow\u2019s house would that be more compelling? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould it mean more? I just couldn\u2019t figure out the other piece to it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I\u2019m in church one day, a couple years later. I run into a good friend of mine, Don Meyer. I say, \u201cDon, what\u2019s up?\u201d He said, \u201cI\u2019m adopting four kids from Moldova.\u201d I\u2019ve adopted; so I knew it was going to be expensive. I said, \u201cHow much is that going to cost?\u201d He said, \u201cWell, it\u2019s about $65,000.\u201d I said, \u201cDo you have any idea how you\u2019re going to raise that?\u201d He said, \u201cNo\u201d; and I said, \u201cI think I have an idea.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe and I got together\u2014put a plan together\u2014we recruited about 13\/14 guys. We all mailed letters out to everyone we knew, saying: \u201cWould you sponsor me while I work on this widow\u2019s house? All the money we raise is going to go towards the cost of this adoption to get these four kids home from Moldova.\u201d We sent letters out. I found a widow in Nashville who needed help\u2014got all the supplies donated \/ we didn\u2019t spend any money.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Cool; cool.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>And we spent the day working on\u00a0 Mrs. Seal\u2019s house. When it was over, we\u2019d raised over $70,000.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So the cost of fundraising was zero, and you raised money to be able to help this guy get four kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes; and a widow was blessed beyond her wildest imagination.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What did you do for her house?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>We put some siding on \/ we took down a chimney that was about to fall off her roof\u2014we got that out of there safely. We took down a dead tree, we painted some of her house, we replaced gas burners, and we had somebody donate a furnace\u2014the kind that you see in a hotel\u2014we put that in her house, in the wall, so it made it a lot safer. We de-cluttered her room. We fixed up the back of her house\u2014I mean, it was great.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Is this your background? Do you do remodeling and home care?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>No! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He\u2019s a golfer!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s a good point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>My wife was laughing right now. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How did you even know how to do any of these things?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t. I didn\u2019t know how to do them, but I figured I knew people who did that. I was in a job where I was actually working in the construction industry\u2014I was more in the recruiting industry\u2014but you know, I knew people who did stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. And you could call a friend who had a friend; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes. Now, when it comes to pressure-washing, I\u2019m a gifted pressure-washer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>\u201cOkay; I can do that.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: \u201c<\/strong>That sounds a little within my skill set.\u201d That\u2019s pretty good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, JT has written a book that\u2019s subtitled: <em>Paying It Forward with Both Hands. <\/em>The name of the book is<em> The Orphan, the Widow, and Me.<\/em> I want to go to the <em>Me<\/em>, which is you. I want to ask you what your story is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Well, you know, it\u2019s interesting; because when Don looked at me and he said, \u201cI\u2019m adopting these four kids from Moldova,\u201d and I said, \u201cWhat happened, Don?\u201d He said: \u201cI went over there on a mission with this group called \u2018Sweet Sleep.\u2019 We deliver beds to orphanages in Moldova. He said, \u201cI fell in love with this boy\u2014this 11-year-old boy, George\u2014we just became inseparable. We started the adoption process. In the process, we found out he has three siblings.\u201d Don looked at me and he said, \u201cWe\u2019re not going to break the siblings up.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat resonated with me, because it took me back to when I was 12 years old. We were living on a farm in northeastern Iowa\u2014there were five of us kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember\u2014in the spring of \u201969, my mom and dad left to go celebrate their 16<sup>th<\/sup> wedding anniversary. Us kids were kind of farmed out to different places, you know. I remember Saturday night we were being brought home because Mom and Dad were coming home. I\u2019d played all that day in my friend\u2019s barn\u2014I was pretty dirty, and I had to go down in the basement. My older brother went upstairs. I remember sitting in this chair, bending over, unlacing my boots. My brother comes down the stairs. I look up at him and\u2014I was excited\u2014I said, \u201cAre Mom and Dad home?!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe looked at me and he said, \u201cMom and Dad are dead.\u201d I said, \u201cWhat?!\u201d He said: \u201cMom and Dad are dead. They were killed in a car accident an hour ago\u201d; and he walked upstairs. I remember hitting the floor\u2014I remember that moment. It stays in your head the rest of your life\u2014that\u2019s what I would call an earth-shattering moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember hitting the floor, and I remember thinking about\u2014the first thought that went through my head was memories of my dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, the thought that goes through you is: \u201cWhat\u2019s going to happen to us? I\u2019m never going to see Mom and Dad again.\u201d I know what it\u2019s like! I know what it\u2019s like to wake up the next morning\u2014and for the first 30 seconds, you think it\u2019s a dream; and then the next 15 seconds you fight with everything you\u2019ve got to make sure it\u2019s a dream; and then it hits you: \u201cThis is not a dream. This is my reality, and I\u2019m never going to see Mom and Dad again this side of heaven.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen Don looked at me and he said, \u201cWe\u2019re not going to break the siblings up,\u201d I\u2019m the just-right guy to say that to; because you know what? I know what it\u2019s like to be an orphan; but I know what it\u2019s like to be rescued because, three months before this accident, my mom and dad changed their will\u2014 that if anything would happen to them, us five kids would go live with my aunt and uncle\u2014Brianna and Ralph Pfeifer in Milwaukee\u2014they live in a very nice suburb in Milwaukee. They had three kids of their own, and they changed their will too; it was vice versa.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, like I said\u2014they had three kids \/ they took all five of us in. They didn\u2019t break up the siblings either. The stepped up\u2014they\u2019re heroes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What was it like for the five of you?\u2014from out in the farmlands to move into the suburbs in Milwaukee with what couldn\u2019t have been a very big house?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>My two little sisters\u2014they were five and three at the time of the accident\u2014they moved in right away with my aunt and uncle. Us three boys\u2014we stayed on the farm to finish the school year out; because my dad had a brother, Uncle Clifford\u2014he was a bachelor \/ he lived with us. [We] three boys stayed on the farm to help Uncle Cliff with chores, and to manage the farm, and to finish the school year out. I think they probably thought that much culture shock would be hard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So you did end up moving, finally, to the suburbs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But then it was realized that you had a farm that either needed to produce or was going to be in jeopardy. So the family you were living with took you back to the farm that summer to work the land.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You, as a young man, helped do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes; the three boys\u2014us three boys did it. Yes; we helped run the farm with Uncle Clifford.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Were you worried? I mean, were you worried about how all that was going to\u2014the planting, the cultivation, the harvesting? I mean, let\u2019s face it\u2014you were young men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes; and that was during the school year\u2014I remember, because the crops were planted before the summertime. I was concerned about it; because you\u2019re wondering: \u201cUncle Clifford can\u2019t do all this,\u201d\u2014Uncle Clifford was 63 years old at the time of the accident. You know, we drove tractors; but we weren\u2019t skilled enough to plant\u2014you know, you have to be a little bit better to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember one day getting off the bus, and it was just amazing\u2014our bus stop was about half a mile from the house, and it\u2019s uphill. You can see a lot of the farm. I remember\u2014it was a beautiful April day\u2014getting off the bus one day\u2014and there were all our neighbors in our fields with their tractors, and their plows, and their planters, and their discs and their drags\u2014and that\u2019s how they did it back then. They were planting our crops. When you\u2019re a farm kid, you know whose tractor belongs to whom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember there were probably seven or eight men out there planting our crops, taking care of their buddy\u2019s kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That had to have an incredible impact on you, as a young man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes; it made me realize, \u201cThis is what people do.\u201d I mean, it\u2019s kind of what you grow up with in a agricultural farm society\u2014you know, when someone\u2019s cows get out, you go help them get them in; and stuff like that\u2014but <em>that<\/em> was just <em>amazing<\/em>. I mean, they took their day and planted our crops.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m just thinking of three young men who\u2019ve lost their daddy. [Emotion in voice] I mean, it wasn\u2019t like you just had some friends show up\u2014they showed up in the midst of your loss.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Right. They showed up and showed us love. They just\u2014it was just one of those\u2014the way the community just kind of came together\u2014it was like: \u201cWe got your back! We care about the Olson boys \/ the Olson girls.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The loss of your parents\u2014how did that shape your thinking about who God is, and about life, and about whether things are fair; and did it shake any of what you\u2019d learned, or did you just figure, like Job did: \u201cThe Lord gives; the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>You know, I was in seventh grade. I don\u2019t remember exactly, from a theological perspective, what I was thinking. I remember some things\u2014I remember something that a lady said the night of the visitation. It\u2019s not theologically-sound at all, but she said something that just for some reason ministered to me\u2014she said, \u201cI guess God needed your parents more than we did.\u201d You know, that\u2019s not really sound; but for some reason, that made\u2014it hit me \/ it didn\u2019t strike me bad\u2014it was like, \u201cOkay.\u201d You know, \u201cI understand that, because I loved them too\u201d; and I loved them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I don\u2019t know\u2014you just keep moving on. I remember there was a Sunday school teacher. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember asking her, about four or five weeks after the accident, you know: \u201cCan people in heaven look down?\u201d I can\u2019t remember an answer; but I remember how it made me feel, and it made me feel like, \u201cIt\u2019s going to be okay.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You started growing up in a larger city \/ larger community, and you got busted in the ninth grade with a dirty novel that you had hidden inside your science book. What happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Well, I was in ninth grade, you know, and\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Is there any other explanation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Enough said; right? No; I had a buddy who\u2019d gotten back from a trip to New York for spring break. He found these things\u2014he brought them back, and he gave me one. I was acting up in class and Mr. Fairgroot [spelling uncertain]\u2014he said: \u201cThat\u2019s enough, Olson. Back there in the back room.\u201d So he sent me out of class. I was sitting back there in the back\u2014I was supposed to be studying my thing\u2014but Bob had given me this book, and so I was reading. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe walked in and looked at me and he saw it\u2014and he saw what happened\u2014he said, \u201cOkay, that\u2019s it\u2014down to the principal\u2019s office.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I got into a little trouble when I got home that night. I\u2019ll never forget that, though; because I walked by my uncle, whose\u2014his business was in the basement, and our bedroom was in the basement that they had. I walked by his office, kind of tiptoeing; but he saw me. I was sitting there about five or six seconds\u2014he says, \u201cJeff, you want to come in here a minute?\u201d I\u2019m thinking: \u201cOh, no! The principal\u2014they did call.\u201d So I remember he sat me down and said, \u201cThe principal called today\u2014said you got in some trouble.\u201d I said, \u201cYes; so what?\u201d\u2014I gave him a flip answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>And I remember he grabbed my shoulder\u2014pulled me\u2014and said: \u201cListen, buddy; I know it\u2019s been tough. I know that you have a situation that probably most people don\u2019t have. But you know, we have nine people in this family pulling one way and you pulling the other, and all you\u2019re doing is feeling sorry for yourself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYou bet it\u2019s time to shape up or ship out, because you can feel sorry for yourself as long as you want; but sooner or later, you\u2019re going to find you\u2019re the only person feeling sorry for you. So it\u2019s time to change your attitude.\u201d I just\u2014I mean, that\u2019s what I needed to hear.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I know that\u2019s a story from a long time ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But I have to believe there are some dads, grandmas, uncles, moms, who may need to square up with a young man or a young lady who\u2019s being sassy, you know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They\u2019re creating a cross-current, or maybe a current in the wrong direction, as your uncle said. Call them up. Don\u2019t just let them destroy their lives. It could be a key defining moment. Was it one for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes, because I noticed it. He was right\u2014I was feeling sorry. I was moping \/ I was walking around, feeling sorry for myself: \u201cPoor, poor me.\u201d It wasn\u2019t getting me anywhere. I did notice a change\u2014I started being a little more happy. I think he probably noticed it too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo that was one of those fence-post pivotal big moments in life that you kind of remember.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, when it got time to go to college, what did you decide?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>I decided that University of Wisconsin, Madison, was a pretty good place to party. That\u2019s where I ended up going, and that\u2019s why I ended up going there; because my last couple years of high school\u2014I refer to them as \u201cthe lost years\u201d\u2014you know, just got in some stuff that probably wasn\u2019t really healthy and got into partying a lot. I still had a lot of friends, and it was great; but I wasn\u2019t headed in the right direction. I went to college, and I remember that I was aimless \/ I didn\u2019t have a lot of purpose.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, how\u2019d you go to college?\u2014I mean, your uncle had eight kids?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Well, I worked. I had a summer job\u2014I mean, you know, in high school, I had a job\u2014I worked during the school year \/ I probably worked about 20\/24 hours a week. In the summertime, I worked 40 hours a week\u2014I had lawn jobs\u2014and I saved money. Back then, tuition, I think, at Madison was $250 a semester. So, I mean, I saved good money. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was also just a little bit of money from some lawsuit from the accident \/ plus, I was an orphan; and there was Social Security. So, between all that, I was able to afford to go to school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And during college, you had people, who saw you were headed in the wrong direction, who tried to get you pointed back in the right direction. You had an uncle who tried to get you turned around\u2014that didn\u2019t work\u2014but there were others who came along and tried to get you rerouted too; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>Yes. Uncle Ralph always encouraged me whenever I\u2019d come home a little too often to party in Milwaukee\u2014he said: \u201cYou have to get back to school. You have to study. You have to do something with your life.\u201d It just didn\u2019t make any sense; but at one point, there in the spring of 1975, is when I heard about this company selling books, door to door\u2014the Southwestern Company. My roommate came back and said, \u201cI signed up to sell books.\u201d I said, \u201cYou\u2019re crazy,\u201d\u2014I made fun of him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen he told me a little bit more about it and found out it was just more about working nights, selling. I said, \u201cWell, maybe I\u2019ll go hear about it.\u201d And I ended up saying, \u201cYes; I think I can do this.\u201d Literally, that summer job changed my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Because?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>I went out\u2014and instead of going back home and being with all my friends who were partying\u2014I went to be around people who were working 75 to 80 hours a week, and knocking on doors and learning how to handle myself. I mean, that summer I think met with 3,000 different families. I learned how to handle myself\u2014learned how to make a good first impression \/ learned how to make a presentation. You know, I learned a lot\u2014more than I would have working at the factory in Milwaukee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You grew up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>[Laughter] Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And he also made a lot of cash too; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>I made some money; yes, I was able to afford school; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So okay; you\u2019re in the process of growing up that summer. What was the takeaway?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>There were several; but the biggest one was\u2014I remember having, at the end of the summertime, my manager, who\u2019d gotten me into it\u2014we were driving away from a Sunday meeting, and I was in Los Angeles. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d never been to the west coast\u2014never seen the ocean \/ never did any of that stuff. I\u2019d had a <em>great<\/em> summer, and I learned a lot. Dick was driving \/ I was in the passenger\u2019s side. I\u2019m watching Los Angeles go by\u2014all this stuff I had seen for the summertime\u2014it was <em>great<\/em>. I looked at Dick and I said: \u201cDick, I just want to thank you for everything you\u2019ve done. You\u2019ve put up with me, you\u2019ve helped me, you\u2019ve helped motivate me, you\u2019ve taught me, and I could not have done this without your help.\u201d He looked at me and he says, \u201cOh, you could have done it without my help.\u201d I said, \u201cNo\u201d; and he said, \u201cWell, you\u2019re welcome.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember turning back and watching the city go by me. The thought hit me, \u201cHe must really feel <em>great<\/em>, because I just thanked him for something that changed my life. If he doesn\u2019t feel great, it\u2019s because I haven\u2019t effectively communicated to him the importance of what he did.\u201d Then it hit me, \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be great if somebody could feel that way about JT Olson someday?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>JT: <\/strong>It was powerful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I have a feeling there are a few.
