What do you do when that happens? Here\u2019s advice from Stephen Williams.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> If your teacher says, \u201cWell we all know that Darwinian naturalistic evolution is proven fact and if you don\u2019t believe in that, you\u2019re stupid.\u201d If a teacher says something along those lines, that actually is viewpoint discrimination and that teacher has said something that is illegal to say in the classroom. How do you deal with that? You don\u2019t go try to get that teacher fired. You would meet with the teacher and try to work that situation out and go through the appropriate channels.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, August 4<sup>th<\/sup>. Most of our listeners probably aren\u2019t aware you spent\u2014was it one day or more than a day that you spent as a public-school teacher?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was one day. Are you trashing me as a public-school teacher?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I am not trashing you at all. You stepped in\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t get fired. Don\u2019t try to cause our audience to think\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m not trying to insinuate anything. You stepped in the middle of a school strike and volunteered to fill a classroom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A number of us parents opened schools\u2014not a school but a number of schools in the county. It was a real education. I made some great relationships in that one school I went and taught English in\u2014which was a great illustration. Let me introduce our guest then I\u2019ll tell him and he can respond to this. We have an author of a book that I think our listeners are going to be very interested in called <em>Navigating Public Schools<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStephen and Sarah Williams have written this. We\u2019ve only got 50% of that deal here. Stephen joins us on the broadcast. Welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Thank you Dennis and Bob. Great to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He and his wife, Sarah, give leadership to a ministry called Prepare the Way Ministries since 2006. He was a public-school teacher for a number of years before starting this ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You lasted longer than a day as a teacher.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Yes. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Glad to hear that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well the strike quit, so my job was over at that point. But I taught 8<sup>th<\/sup> grade English. I had them answer some questions. One of the questions was all about who was the most influential person in your life\u2014and I was unprepared for their answers. I basically said, \u201cWho\u2019s your hero?\u201d One group was predictable\u2014parents, grandparents, etc. It was an inner-city school that we taught in\u2014about a third said that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother third was sports stars, musicians, etc. Michael Jordan, maybe\u2014was famous back then. But I was unprepared, Stephen, for the third group that was listed when I asked, \u201cWho your hero was?\u201d They said \u201cme.\u201d Not me as a teacher but, \u201cMe, myself, and I.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m my own hero.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now think about it. When you were 13 or 14, how prepared were you to be your own hero? And you have to believe it\u2019s only because they didn\u2019t have anybody else that they trusted and looked up to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Hearing you tell that story and thinking about the environment in which teachers are teaching today, I mean it\u2019s easy for us as Christian parents to look at the public schools and think, \u201cBoy we may have some problems with the teachers.\u201d I have to tell you, it\u2019s hard to be a teacher in a lot of public schools today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I say hard, I mean you may be cussed out by your kids with no recourse. You may face threats of violence. There are all kind of issues that school teachers are facing day in and day out. You can understand why they either quit the profession or they just say, \u201cI\u2019m here to get a paycheck and as soon as I can retire, I retire.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Right. During the court case\u2014when I was teaching\u2014loved teaching early U.S. History using primary sourced documents\u2014Sam Adams, William Penn\u2014tons of them really. Whenever we were talking about say\u2014studying up Pennsylvania\u2014founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn, wrote a document called <em>The Frame of Government<\/em>. In this document he quotes Romans 13. He does a little exegesis on it. So, I\u2019m teaching history using these documents and all of a sudden, the school\u2014in 2002-2003 school year\u2014starts censoring them saying they violate the separation of church and state. I said, \u201cWait a second, this isn\u2019t my opinion. This is the founders. These are the actual documents.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis led to ultimately the federal court case that I\u2019ve mentioned before. We prayed on our knees and I literally cried out to the Lord. The next day I go into school and this room mom\u2014she vowed never to be room mom. She had four kids. The oldest was in my sixth-grade class room at the time. She always one in hand and a couple in tow and she was like \u201cI\u2019m never going to be room mom again.\u201d But the Lord called her to be room mom my year. Now I know why. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe comes in and says, \u201cStephen, my mom gets Scripture for people and last night she got all these Scriptures for you.\u201d I\u2019m on my knees crying out to the Lord saying, \u201cLord, what am I going to do with this court case?\u201d She wrote down all these Scriptures. I just felt led to read them right away\u2014I start reading\u2014it was all out of Isaiah 41 and some other places in the Old Testament. Here\u2019s what I start reading.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt says this, \u201cYou are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off; fear not, for I am with you. Do not look around in terror and be dismayed, for I am your God. I am the Lord who will strengthen you and harden you to difficulties. Yes, I will help you and hold you up and retain you with my victorious right hand of rightness and justice.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI literally started to weep right there because I thought, \u201cWell, I\u2019m out of this case.\u201d The fear\u2014and at that moment, fear just completely left me and I just knew the Lord had my back. I mean how could this woman\u2014totally not knowing what we were doing that night\u2014get these exact Scriptures. So\u2014man! I came back and just felt back on fire for the Lord. The last sentence was \u201cI am the Lord who says to you, \u2018Fear not, I am with you.\u2019\u201d I think that\u2019s a <em>huge<\/em> issue for teachers\u2014for parents\u2014for anyone going into the public-school system\u2014Dennis\u2014that you were talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFear can grip us and when we\u2019re led by the Lord we don\u2019t have anything to fear\u2014because He\u2019s got our back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And the reality is\u2014you can paralyze a parent with fear.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A lot of parents know what I\u2019m talking about, especially when they start thinking about tackling the Goliath of the public-school system and feeling like they\u2019re walking off into a valley\u2014into a battle that they don\u2019t really understand what the rules of the battle are all about. When you were a part of that court case, did you realize all of what was at stake as you began it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But you started it by faith; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Exactly. I felt the Lord leading to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What were the takeaways you got as a result of stepping out in faith\u2014being obedient? What did you take away from that\u2014because you won the case; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Yes. Be equipped. Know what your rights are and know\u2014in a Biblical worldview how to\u2014as we\u2019ve talked about before\u2014be ambassadors for Christ\u2014to know the truth but yet represent Christ in a gracious, winsome, and loving way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There are some school administrators who have been intimidated by letters or phone calls by people who say, \u201cIf you do this, we\u2019re going to sue you.\u201d Just the threat of a lawsuit is enough to cause some administrators to go, \u201cI don\u2019t want to waste the time, the effort, the energy\u2014so, we will just not do that\u2014\u201c\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, Bob, you\u2019re speaking of those who are perhaps atheists\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re not talking about Christians threatening a lawsuit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No. I\u2019m talking about the group that would say, \u201cIf you keep using William Penn\u2019s document in the history classroom\u2014the one that\u2019s got Romans 13 referenced in it\u2014we\u2019re going to sue you for violation of church and state.\u201d You can see where an administrator would just say, \u201cLet\u2019s take the easy way out here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> The ACLU, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, The Freedom from Religion Foundation\u2014they know that their losing rate is high\u2014around 80% of cases that they lose\u2014but they know that the mere <em>threat<\/em> of a lawsuit towards the school administrator is all they really need. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow ADF and the ACLJ and Liberty Counsel and the Pacific Justice Institute\u2014there\u2019s great Christian legal firms we reference them in the book, when you get empowered they\u2019re the ones winning 80 to 90% of their cases because they\u2019re on the side of the law in reality. I think getting those administrators\u2014those Christian administrators out there\u2014don\u2019t be afraid. Call up these Christian legal funds\u2014they\u2019ll represent you for free.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are a lot of parents listening to us right now. They\u2019re going, \u201cMy problem isn\u2019t a lawsuit in the school system. My problem is there\u2019s a grocery list of agenda items that are being taught in public schools as though it\u2019s the truth.\u201d Where do you see the greatest offense occurring that parents\u2014who are parents of faith\u2014ought to be aware of?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>I think we talked about it before, but some of those\u2014History, Science, Literature, Sex Ed, Anti-Bullying, Safe Schools\u2014things like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut there\u2019s not a formula. It could crop up anywhere in the public-school system. That\u2019s one of the things we say is just, \u201cBe aware. Be proactive. Be involved.\u201d Then know how to address that\u2014how to\u2014with grace and love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe walk Christians through towards the end of the book\u2014\u201cHow do you deal with conflict? How do you chat with that teacher and try to work that situation out and go through the appropriate channels?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I can understand how you may need to\u2014as a parent\u2014sit down with your child who comes home and says, \u201cWe learned today that the world began with a big bang.\u201d You would say, \u201cThat\u2019s one of many views. Let me read you what the Bible has to say.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou could present a Biblical alternative to what the child is learning at school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen it comes to issues of gender and sexuality in our day, I wonder how any parent navigates that\u2014I wonder how teachers navigate that. If a third-grade little girl wants to be called a boy and the teacher says, \u201cWell from now on we\u2019re going to call Susie a boy and use the name that she prefers and all of the kids have to get in line\u2014and if you don\u2019t you\u2019re bullying Susie.\u201d I just think about that environment and think, \u201cHow confusing is that for a nine-year-old?\u201d and \u201cHow does a parent handle that one at home?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Yes. Whole chapter in the book we write, \u201cWatch out for worldview pirates.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s a huge one\u2014that you\u2019ve got some worldview pirates coming in here with the safe schools or gender identity issues\u2014where they\u2019re attacking Christians and really using that as an anti-Christian mandate\u2014that\u2019s illegal. That\u2019s illegal to do. Knowing how to speak the truth in love in those scenarios\u2014knowing how to meet with not just the teacher but the principal\u2014the superintendent of curriculum, the\u2014you get involved like Dennis, you did\u2014and got involved in that school situation a while back to have a positive influence and to protect the Christian\u2019s worldview is legal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Give us an illustration of what\u2019s happening around the bullying and anti-discrimination because these are really subtle ways these pirates sneak into schools and really put our kids on the spot in the classroom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> By the way, I don\u2019t know anybody who is pro-bullying; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019re not talking about the fact that we should be nice and respectful to other people. We\u2019re talking about what\u2019s coming in under the agenda of bullying\u2014and it\u2019s more than just being nice to one another.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly right. There are great curriculums that are anti-bullying curriculums and safe school curriculums and we had one at Cupertino\u2014it\u2019s actually really interesting. The curriculum was \u201cTreat others the way you want to be treated.\u201d It was completely Biblically based.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We know where that idea comes from.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Yes. Now they didn\u2019t mention it, they didn\u2019t talk about Jesus\u2014but it was absolutely a rock-solid curriculum. That\u2019s a great example, but if you don\u2019t agree with\u2014for example, gender identity issues, homosexuality\u2014if you don\u2019t agree with them, they start targeting people and saying, \u201cWell that\u2019s bigoted and hateful\u201d if you don\u2019t openly embrace it. Christians in a proper Biblical worldview\u2014there is no discrimination and we love every person\u2014human being\u2014that God created in His image.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> All people created with dignity because they\u2019re created in the image of God; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Right. In Christianity there should be no discrimination but yet a lot of these curriculums\u2014at times\u2014are becoming anti-Christian\u2014where they\u2019re pro-homosexual indoctrination. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, if I\u2019m a parent and I come into the school and I say, \u201cAt our house, we\u2019ve taught our kids that God made two kinds of people\u2014He made men and women. We\u2019ve also taught our kids that God made it so that boys should marry girls and girls should marry boys. Now we know the law of the land is different than what we\u2019re teaching at home, but we\u2019d sure like to have our viewpoint at least respected and represented even if it\u2019s an alternate view to what is legal.\u201d Are schools just going to dismiss me as a crackpot or are they going to go, \u201cOkay we\u2019re here to try and help you with that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> If you get the right equipping\u2014get involved\u2014contact a Christian legal firm say, \u201cHey this issue is going on. Can you help me walk this?\u201d They will. They\u2019ll represent you for free and help you out. That\u2019s their ministry. Nine times out of ten you will be able to resolve that issue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if you can\u2019t\u2014if there\u2019s a whole school or a whole district that is just kind off the deep end in this area\u2014we talk about \u201cwhat do you do in those scenarios?\u201d If you\u2019ve got a child K-5 in elementary, they\u2019re in that classroom 1400 hours per year. That teacher is probably with your child more than you are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me give an example. I walk into\u2014I\u2019m doing a teacher training down at Cupertino\u2014I walk into this other teacher\u2019s room at a different school. The teacher wasn\u2019t even there and yet I sit down and I look upon the walls and I notice there is no American flag. Then I see a flag of mother earth and by the flag of mother earth I see a pledge of allegiance to mother earth. You just look around the room and your thinking blatant worldview pirate right in elementary school. We say\u2014look\u2014you should not have your kids in that teacher\u2019s classroom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tParents should go to the principal and request, \u201cI am not comfortable with this teacher.\u201d Again, nine times out of ten, principals in elementary school will honor a parent\u2019s request, \u201cI don\u2019t want my child in this person\u2019s classroom. I would like them over here.\u201d Now middle school and high school\u2014if that\u2019s the case\u2014you can\u2019t do that because they\u2019re in different classes at different times. That\u2019s just a practical example of how you would deal with a worldview pirate like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re a father of four daughters, ages four to 12. How are you preparing them as young ladies around their identity\u2014not only as a follower of Christ but also being a young lady\u2014a woman and not the opposite sex\u2014not gender fluidity\u2014but how are you preparing them for these issues because they will face them by the time they graduate from high school?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> I think if you look at studies\u2014David Kinnaman wrote a book called <em>You Lost Me<\/em>. Kara Powell and Chap Clark wrote a book called <em>Sticky Faith<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you got to boil down the research\u2014there\u2019s no formula\u2014but to raise up Christian kids to successfully launch into adulthood with an on fire Christian faith\u2014I think it takes two things. One, it\u2019s Biblical worldview equipping\u2014it\u2019s knowledge, it\u2019s doctrine, it\u2019s apologetics, it\u2019s theology, it\u2019s taking\u2014 One thing I was reading Deuteronomy 6 and I just said\u2014about six or seven years ago\u2014I said, \u201cHoney, we need to do a family devotional every day and this needs to be our top priority.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow we still do it about five times a week. There\u2019s stuff that just comes up\u2014but boy we\u2019re really trying to say, \u201cWe need to do this every single day.\u201d Every one of our kids starting\u2014even Mary Catherine, our four-year-old, somebody reads to her a little kids Bible story and all six of us share \u201cWhat did you learn about Jesus today?\u201d It could be done in five minutes. It\u2019s not something that needs to take half hour or an hour. That\u2019s one thing\u2014Biblical worldview equipping.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing is so important. It\u2019s having loving adult Christian role models in the kid\u2019s lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve seen people in the homeschool community say, \u201cWell, if you just homeschool,\u201d that\u2019s it. Well, I see homeschoolers walking away from their faith at times. It\u2019s not the silver bullet. The silver bullet, I believe, is those two things together. It\u2019s Biblical worldview equipping and loving adult Christian role models.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What you\u2019re talking about can be found in the bestselling book of all time and I\u2019m sorry to say, Stephen, it\u2019s not your book. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s the Bible\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> The Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s one book in the Bible\u2014if you want to go to, if you want to teach a worldview\u2014it\u2019s the book of Proverbs. Now why do I say that? Because Proverbs is all about wisdom and wisdom is skill to live life the way God designed it. The Book of Proverbs is going to bring your child and you into circumstances where you\u2019re applying the truth about God and the truth of Scripture to situations and circumstances where you\u2019re teaching your kids how to think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is the essence of a Biblical worldview. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur kids would roll their eyes back. We\u2019d be on the way to a football game or another event for the school and one of their friends would be in the backseat. If I knew the kid pretty well, I\u2019d say \u201cSo tell me Mack, what\u2019s your worldview?\u201d My kids would go, \u201cOh Dad, I can\u2019t believe you did it again\u2014ask him what his worldview is.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUsually that would lead to a discussion about \u201cWhat is a worldview?\u201d and \u201cWhat makes one up?\u201d\u2014and we would talk about it. Now my kids didn\u2019t realize this, but I was talking to them more than I was the young man or the young lady in the backseat with my daughters or my sons. I was educating them about how to think about life from the Scripture and to think about how to live life wisely according to God\u2019s perspective.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> That\u2019s one thing that we love about FamilyLife. My wife and I use Barbara\u2019s the seven words and now I think you mentioned there\u2019s 30 names of Christ for Christmas. (<em>His Christmas Names<\/em> and <em>Adornaments<\/em>\u00ae)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve gone to the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>\u2014I just so appreciate what you all are doing here. It\u2019s such a resource for the body of Christ. You\u2019ve made it easy. You\u2019ve given tools to equip the body of Christ on how do you raise up children with a Biblical worldview and live out that worldview as Christ in the center of a family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ll fist bump you right back on that because you\u2019ve given a tool to a lot of moms and dads in the book that you\u2019ve written which is called <em>Navigating Public Schools<\/em>. I do think some of this is because we have removed God and the truth of God from the public-school system and if we can\u2014be a part of being salt and light to permeate the darkness\u2014and that\u2019s what you\u2019re doing\u2014you\u2019re helping parents do that. You stepped in the middle of a school strike and volunteered to fill a classroom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A number of us parents opened schools\u2014not a school but a number of schools in the county. It was a real education. I made some great relationships in that one school I went and taught English in\u2014which was a great illustration. Let me introduce our guest then I\u2019ll tell him and he can respond to this. Great to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He and his wife, Sarah, give leadership to a ministry called Prepare the Way Ministries since 2006. He was a public-school teacher for a number of years before starting this ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You lasted longer than a day as a teacher.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Yes. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Glad to hear that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well the strike quit, so my job was over at that point. But I taught 8<sup>th<\/sup> grade English. I had them answer some questions. One of the questions was all about who was the most influential person in your life\u2014and I was unprepared for their answers. I basically said, \u201cWho\u2019s your hero?\u201d One group was predictable\u2014parents, grandparents, etc. It was an inner-city school that we taught in\u2014about a third said that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother third was sports stars, musicians, etc. Michael Jordan, maybe\u2014was famous back then. But I was unprepared, Stephen, for the third group that was listed when I asked, \u201cWho your hero was?\u201d They said \u201cme.\u201d Not me as a teacher but, \u201cMe, myself, and I.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m my own hero.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now think about it. When you were 13 or 14, how prepared were you to be your own hero? And you have to believe it\u2019s only because they didn\u2019t have anybody else that they trusted and looked up to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Hearing you tell that story and thinking about the environment in which teachers are teaching today, I mean it\u2019s easy for us as Christian parents to look at the public schools and think, \u201cBoy we may have some problems with the teachers.\u201d I have to tell you, it\u2019s hard to be a teacher in a lot of public schools today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I say hard, I mean you may be cussed out by your kids with no recourse. You may face threats of violence. There are all kind of issues that school teachers are facing day in and day out. You can understand why they either quit the profession or they just say, \u201cI\u2019m here to get a paycheck and as soon as I can retire, I retire.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Right. During the court case\u2014when I was teaching\u2014loved teaching early U.S. History using primary sourced documents\u2014Sam Adams, William Penn\u2014tons of them really. Whenever we were talking about say\u2014studying up Pennsylvania\u2014founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn, wrote a document called <em>The Frame of Government<\/em>. In this document he quotes Romans 13. He does a little exegesis on it. So, I\u2019m teaching history using these documents and all of a sudden, the school\u2014in 2002-2003 school year\u2014starts censoring them saying they violate the separation of church and state. I said, \u201cWait a second, this isn\u2019t my opinion. This is the founders. These are the actual documents.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis led to ultimately the federal court case that I\u2019ve mentioned before. We prayed on our knees and I literally cried out to the Lord. The next day I go into school and this room mom\u2014she vowed never to be room mom. She had four kids. The oldest was in my sixth-grade class room at the time. She always one in hand and a couple in tow and she was like \u201cI\u2019m never going to be room mom again.\u201d But the Lord called her to be room mom my year. Now I know why. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe comes in and says, \u201cStephen, my mom gets Scripture for people and last night she got all these Scriptures for you.\u201d I\u2019m on my knees crying out to the Lord saying, \u201cLord, what am I going to do with this court case?\u201d She wrote down all these Scriptures. I just felt led to read them right away\u2014I start reading\u2014it was all out of Isaiah 41 and some other places in the Old Testament. Here\u2019s what I start reading.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt says this, \u201cYou are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off; fear not, for I am with you. Do not look around in terror and be dismayed, for I am your God. I am the Lord who will strengthen you and harden you to difficulties. Yes, I will help you and hold you up and retain you with my victorious right hand of rightness and justice.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI literally started to weep right there because I thought, \u201cWell, I\u2019m out of this case.\u201d The fear\u2014and at that moment, fear just completely left me and I just knew the Lord had my back. I mean how could this woman\u2014totally not knowing what we were doing that night\u2014get these exact Scriptures. So\u2014man! I came back and just felt back on fire for the Lord. The last sentence was \u201cI am the Lord who says to you, \u2018Fear not, I am with you.\u2019\u201d I think that\u2019s a <em>huge<\/em> issue for teachers\u2014for parents\u2014for anyone going into the public-school system\u2014Dennis\u2014that you were talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFear can grip us and when we\u2019re led by the Lord we don\u2019t have anything to fear\u2014because He\u2019s got our back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And the reality is\u2014you can paralyze a parent with fear.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A lot of parents know what I\u2019m talking about, especially when they start thinking about tackling the Goliath of the public-school system and feeling like they\u2019re walking off into a valley\u2014into a battle that they don\u2019t really understand what the rules of the battle are all about. When you were a part of that court case, did you realize all of what was at stake as you began it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But you started it by faith; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Exactly. I felt the Lord leading to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What were the takeaways you got as a result of stepping out in faith\u2014being obedient? What did you take away from that\u2014because you won the case; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Yes. Be equipped. Know what your rights are and know\u2014in a Biblical worldview how to\u2014as we\u2019ve talked about before\u2014be ambassadors for Christ\u2014to know the truth but yet represent Christ in a gracious, winsome, and loving way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There are some school administrators who have been intimidated by letters or phone calls by people who say, \u201cIf you do this, we\u2019re going to sue you.\u201d Just the threat of a lawsuit is enough to cause some administrators to go, \u201cI don\u2019t want to waste the time, the effort, the energy\u2014so, we will just not do that\u2014\u201c\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, Bob, you\u2019re speaking of those who are perhaps atheists\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re not talking about Christians threatening a lawsuit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No. I\u2019m talking about the group that would say, \u201cIf you keep using William Penn\u2019s document in the history classroom\u2014the one that\u2019s got Romans 13 referenced in it\u2014we\u2019re going to sue you for violation of church and state.\u201d You can see where an administrator would just say, \u201cLet\u2019s take the easy way out here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> The ACLU, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, The Freedom from Religion Foundation\u2014they know that their losing rate is high\u2014around 80% of cases that they lose\u2014but they know that the mere <em>threat<\/em> of a lawsuit towards the school administrator is all they really need. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow ADF and the ACLJ and Liberty Counsel and the Pacific Justice Institute\u2014there\u2019s great Christian legal firms we reference them in the book, when you get empowered they\u2019re the ones winning 80 to 90% of their cases because they\u2019re on the side of the law in reality. I think getting those administrators\u2014those Christian administrators out there\u2014don\u2019t be afraid. Call up these Christian legal funds\u2014they\u2019ll represent you for free.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are a lot of parents listening to us right now. They\u2019re going, \u201cMy problem isn\u2019t a lawsuit in the school system. My problem is there\u2019s a grocery list of agenda items that are being taught in public schools as though it\u2019s the truth.\u201d Where do you see the greatest offense occurring that parents\u2014who are parents of faith\u2014ought to be aware of?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>I think we talked about it before, but some of those\u2014History, Science, Literature, Sex Ed, Anti-Bullying, Safe Schools\u2014things like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut there\u2019s not a formula. It could crop up anywhere in the public-school system. That\u2019s one of the things we say is just, \u201cBe aware. Be proactive. Be involved.\u201d Then know how to address that\u2014how to\u2014with grace and love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe walk Christians through towards the end of the book\u2014\u201cHow do you deal with conflict? How do you deal with it in a gracious, winsome, and loving way?\u201d If your teacher says, \u201cWell we all know that Darwinian naturalistic evolution is proven fact and if you don\u2019t believe in that, you\u2019re stupid.\u201d If a teacher says something along those lines, that actually is viewpoint discrimination. That teacher has said something that\u2019s illegal to say in the classroom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow do you deal with that? You don\u2019t go to the superintendent and try to get that teacher fired. You would meet with the teacher and bring along some of the documents that we reference in the book or other places\u2014get equipped. How do you chat with that teacher and try to work that situation out and go through the appropriate channels?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I can understand how you may need to\u2014as a parent\u2014sit down with your child who comes home and says, \u201cWe learned today that the world began with a big bang.\u201d You would say, \u201cThat\u2019s one of many views. Let me read you what the Bible has to say.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou could present a Biblical alternative to what the child is learning at school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen it comes to issues of gender and sexuality in our day, I wonder how any parent navigates that\u2014I wonder how teachers navigate that. If a third-grade little girl wants to be called a boy and the teacher says, \u201cWell from now on we\u2019re going to call Susie a boy and use the name that she prefers and all of the kids have to get in line\u2014and if you don\u2019t you\u2019re bullying Susie.\u201d I just think about that environment and think, \u201cHow confusing is that for a nine-year-old?\u201d and \u201cHow does a parent handle that one at home?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Yes. Whole chapter in the book we write, \u201cWatch out for worldview pirates.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s a huge one\u2014that you\u2019ve got some worldview pirates coming in here with the safe schools or gender identity issues\u2014where they\u2019re attacking Christians and really using that as an anti-Christian mandate\u2014that\u2019s illegal. That\u2019s illegal to do. Knowing how to speak the truth in love in those scenarios\u2014knowing how to meet with not just the teacher but the principal\u2014the superintendent of curriculum, the\u2014you get involved like Dennis, you did\u2014and got involved in that school situation a while back to have a positive influence and to protect the Christian\u2019s worldview is legal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Give us an illustration of what\u2019s happening around the bullying and anti-discrimination because these are really subtle ways these pirates sneak into schools and really put our kids on the spot in the classroom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> By the way, I don\u2019t know anybody who is pro-bullying; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019re not talking about the fact that we should be nice and respectful to other people. We\u2019re talking about what\u2019s coming in under the agenda of bullying\u2014and it\u2019s more than just being nice to one another.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly right. There are great curriculums that are anti-bullying curriculums and safe school curriculums and we had one at Cupertino\u2014it\u2019s actually really interesting. The curriculum was \u201cTreat others the way you want to be treated.\u201d It was completely Biblically based.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We know where that idea comes from.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Yes. Now they didn\u2019t mention it, they didn\u2019t talk about Jesus\u2014but it was absolutely a rock-solid curriculum. That\u2019s a great example, but if you don\u2019t agree with\u2014for example, gender identity issues, homosexuality\u2014if you don\u2019t agree with them, they start targeting people and saying, \u201cWell that\u2019s bigoted and hateful\u201d if you don\u2019t openly embrace it. Christians in a proper Biblical worldview\u2014there is no discrimination and we love every person\u2014human being\u2014that God created in His image.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> All people created with dignity because they\u2019re created in the image of God; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> Right. In Christianity there should be no discrimination but yet a lot of these curriculums\u2014at times\u2014are becoming anti-Christian\u2014where they\u2019re pro-homosexual indoctrination. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, if I\u2019m a parent and I come into the school and I say, \u201cAt our house, we\u2019ve taught our kids that God made two kinds of people\u2014He made men and women. We\u2019ve also taught our kids that God made it so that boys should marry girls and girls should marry boys. Now we know the law of the land is different than what we\u2019re teaching at home, but we\u2019d sure like to have our viewpoint at least respected and represented even if it\u2019s an alternate view to what is legal.\u201d Are schools just going to dismiss me as a crackpot or are they going to go, \u201cOkay we\u2019re here to try and help you with that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> If you get the right equipping\u2014get involved\u2014contact a Christian legal firm say, \u201cHey this issue is going on. Can you help me walk this?\u201d They will. They\u2019ll represent you for free and help you out. That\u2019s their ministry. Nine times out of ten you will be able to resolve that issue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if you can\u2019t\u2014if there\u2019s a whole school or a whole district that is just kind off the deep end in this area\u2014we talk about \u201cwhat do you do in those scenarios?\u201d If you\u2019ve got a child K-5 in elementary, they\u2019re in that classroom 1400 hours per year. That teacher is probably with your child more than you are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me give an example. I walk into\u2014I\u2019m doing a teacher training down at Cupertino\u2014I walk into this other teacher\u2019s room at a different school. The teacher wasn\u2019t even there and yet I sit down and I look upon the walls and I notice there is no American flag. Then I see a flag of mother earth and by the flag of mother earth I see a pledge of allegiance to mother earth. You just look around the room and your thinking blatant worldview pirate right in elementary school. We say\u2014look\u2014you should not have your kids in that teacher\u2019s classroom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tParents should go to the principal and request, \u201cI am not comfortable with this teacher.\u201d Again, nine times out of ten, principals in elementary school will honor a parent\u2019s request, \u201cI don\u2019t want my child in this person\u2019s classroom. I would like them over here.\u201d Now middle school and high school\u2014if that\u2019s the case\u2014you can\u2019t do that because they\u2019re in different classes at different times. That\u2019s just a practical example of how you would deal with a worldview pirate like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re a father of four daughters, ages four to 12. How are you preparing them as young ladies around their identity\u2014not only as a follower of Christ but also being a young lady\u2014a woman and not the opposite sex\u2014not gender fluidity\u2014but how are you preparing them for these issues because they will face them by the time they graduate from high school?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> I think if you look at studies\u2014David Kinnaman wrote a book called <em>You Lost Me<\/em>. Kara Powell and Chap Clark wrote a book called <em>Sticky Faith<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you got to boil down the research\u2014there\u2019s no formula\u2014but to raise up Christian kids to successfully launch into adulthood with an on fire Christian faith\u2014I think it takes two things. One, it\u2019s Biblical worldview equipping\u2014it\u2019s knowledge, it\u2019s doctrine, it\u2019s apologetics, it\u2019s theology, it\u2019s taking\u2014 One thing I was reading Deuteronomy 6 and I just said\u2014about six or seven years ago\u2014I said, \u201cHoney, we need to do a family devotional every day and this needs to be our top priority.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow we still do it about five times a week. There\u2019s stuff that just comes up\u2014but boy we\u2019re really trying to say, \u201cWe need to do this every single day.\u201d Every one of our kids starting\u2014even Mary Catherine, our four-year-old, somebody reads to her a little kids Bible story and all six of us share \u201cWhat did you learn about Jesus today?\u201d It could be done in five minutes. It\u2019s not something that needs to take half hour or an hour. That\u2019s one thing\u2014Biblical worldview equipping.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing is so important. It\u2019s having loving adult Christian role models in the kid\u2019s lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve seen people in the homeschool community say, \u201cWell, if you just homeschool,\u201d that\u2019s it. Well, I see homeschoolers walking away from their faith at times. It\u2019s not the silver bullet. The silver bullet, I believe, is those two things together. It\u2019s Biblical worldview equipping and loving adult Christian role models.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What you\u2019re talking about can be found in the bestselling book of all time and I\u2019m sorry to say, Stephen, it\u2019s not your book. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s the Bible\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> The Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s one book in the Bible\u2014if you want to go to, if you want to teach a worldview\u2014it\u2019s the book of Proverbs. Now why do I say that? Because Proverbs is all about wisdom and wisdom is skill to live life the way God designed it. The Book of Proverbs is going to bring your child and you into circumstances where you\u2019re applying the truth about God and the truth of Scripture to situations and circumstances where you\u2019re teaching your kids how to think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is the essence of a Biblical worldview. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur kids would roll their eyes back. We\u2019d be on the way to a football game or another event for the school and one of their friends would be in the backseat. If I knew the kid pretty well, I\u2019d say \u201cSo tell me Mack, what\u2019s your worldview?\u201d My kids would go, \u201cOh Dad, I can\u2019t believe you did it again\u2014ask him what his worldview is.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUsually that would lead to a discussion about \u201cWhat is a worldview?\u201d and \u201cWhat makes one up?\u201d\u2014and we would talk about it. Now my kids didn\u2019t realize this, but I was talking to them more than I was the young man or the young lady in the backseat with my daughters or my sons. I was educating them about how to think about life from the Scripture and to think about how to live life wisely according to God\u2019s perspective.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong> That\u2019s one thing that we love about FamilyLife. My wife and I use Barbara\u2019s the seven words and now I think you mentioned there\u2019s 30 names of Christ for Christmas. (<em>His Christmas Names<\/em> and <em>Adornaments<\/em>\u00ae)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve gone to the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>\u2014I just so appreciate what you all are doing here. It\u2019s such a resource for the body of Christ. You\u2019ve made it easy.
