Stay tuned. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Friday edition. I read a blog post\u2014this was a number of months ago. It was a dad who was writing and he wrote, \u201cThings I Would Do Differently If I Was Starting Over as a Parent.\u201d I thought, \u201cEverybody could write that blog post.\u201d We all have things we would do differently if we had a second time around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We underestimate the power of children in our lives to redeem us from ourselves\u2014to redeem us from our selfishness\u2014and to frankly, cause us to become more like Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> As you had an opportunity to address students and their spouses at Dallas Theological Seminary, not long ago\u2014you had four days during their spiritual-emphasis week\u2014you talked about marriage, and you talked about parenting. You talked about really having an eternal focus when it comes to the assignment that God\u2019s given us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. I think\u2014for those in the ministry\u2014sometimes, the ministry can\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014compete with our assignment from God, to be a mom and dad. You don\u2019t have to be in the ministry to experience that. You can experience that in business. You can experience that in working at your church\u2014volunteer work. You can even allow your children to rob your marriage of its romance and its relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s a real interesting tension here that we all experience. Let\u2019s put it out there\u2014let\u2019s be honest about it\u2014and lets encourage one another to really be all that God called us to be\u2014as a man, a woman, a husband, a wife, a mom, a dad, a grandparent, maybe\u2014and not waste any of what God\u2019s given us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here\u2019s how you encouraged and challenged the students you spoke to recently at Dallas Seminary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I doubt that John Stott had raising children in mind when he made the following statement: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cLife is a pilgrimage of learning, a voyage of discovery, in which our mistaken views are corrected, our distorted notions are adjusted, our shallow opinions deepened, and some of our vast ignorances are diminished.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things that God used in my life\u2014to correct my views, adjust my notions, deepen my convictions, and diminish my ignorance\u2014has been my wife and family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChildren are a blessing\u2014Psalm 127:3 through 5: \u201cBehold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hands of the warrior are the children of one\u2019s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChildren are also God\u2019s last chance for us, as parents, to grow up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mistakenly thought that God gave me six children to help them grow up. I determined and discovered that God gave us six to help <em>me<\/em> finish the process of moving from boyhood to manhood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChildren are teachers who have divine assignments. They have taught us so much, but one of the most important things they\u2019ve taught us is\u2014they have solidified our doctrine of depravity\u2014[Laughter]\u2014our own depravity, not theirs. Yes, it\u2019s clear they\u2019re selfish, but I am amazed what\u2019s been revealed of what\u2019s in my heart. Children are redemptive. They have saved Barbara and me from toxic self-absorption. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of life is about redemption\u2014taking broken people and doing something marvelous and redeeming them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s one last thing children have taught us. Children can confront us with the forgotten commandment. Exodus 20, verse 12: \u201cHonor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat is it about us\u2014as adults\u2014as we think about our parents, that we want to bash and blame? Looking back at their failures, pulling out a microscope, and focusing on what they didn\u2019t do\u2014and somehow feeling pious and justified? It\u2019s the heart of a Pharisee. To be sure, parents have done evil things\u2014I\u2019m not talking about that\u2014but you and I, my friend, have a responsibility, back to the fifth commandment: \u201cHonor your mother and you father, that it may go well with you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the guys we had on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> was RV Brown. RV works with youth. I forget about how big his biceps are. [Laughter] But RV grew up in a family where he was number 17 of 18 children. His dad, Willy Fish Brown, couldn\u2019t read or write\u2014but he knew the Bible, and he <em>lived<\/em> the Bible. One of the fun things about a national radio program is you give them a chance to express a tribute to a father\u2014to a mother. I want you to listen to some golden audio of one man\u2019s appreciation for Willy Fish Brown.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Audio Clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>RV Brown:<\/strong> Daddy Fish, I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, first of all, for loving my momma and, then secondly, for loving me, and kissing me,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and rubbing my little round head, and telling me to go to school and everything was going to be okay. And then Dad, I want to thank you for taking me fishing, July 6, 1959, for the first time. Today, my son fishes\u2014I took him to the same spot, Daddy\u2014and we stood there until he caught a fish. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDad, I want to just tell you what an awesome leader you was. With no education Dad, you taught me. You educated me how to love\u2014how to appreciate you, Dad\u2014not only how to appreciate you but to enjoy my life today because of what you did and how you loved me, Dad. I wish I could hug you today, Dad. When I look at your picture and mom picture over my head in my easy chair, I always look at it and say, \u201cDaddy, am I doing okay? Am I loving my wife the way you loved my mom?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThank you for taking me fishing and sitting down, talking with me, on the bank when nothing was biting. Dad, thank you for teaching me how to farm and to take\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014care of other people and share whatever I got with other people, Dad. I\u2019m the kind of a man I am today because of who you are, Dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just pray for other dads\u2014that they love their children and love their wives the way my dad loved my mama and loved us. Thank you\u2014Dad and Mom\u2014for being who you are. You live to this day inside of me, Dad. Every day I wake up, I see you Dad. I see you\u2014I see your smile, I see the way you walk, I see the way you talk to people. It\u2019s the same thing Dad, as is happening all over again because of what you did, Dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWilly Fish, you\u2019re a special man. Willy Fish, you\u2019re a godly man. Even though you couldn\u2019t read, you taught me how to love through the Word of God\u2014and not only couldn\u2019t read it\u2014but you <em>explained<\/em> it to me, Father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDad, thank you for being my dad. I wouldn\u2019t want nobody else to be my dad but you, Dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThank you for loving Momma. Thank you for the leadership and the authority in which you raised us in. Thank you for the discipline. Dad, I love you\u2014and one day I\u2019ll spend eternity with you. Thanks, Dad!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[End Audio Clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s the most powerful institution on the planet\u2014it\u2019s where we learn right from wrong, we learn how to love, we get a glimpse of God. In its broken form, it\u2019s still what God created\u2014a family. I\u2019ve got three points for you, as I wrap up here:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber One: Children are your responsibility. If you\u2019re married and you have children\u2014your ministry begins at home. I don\u2019t need to remind such an astute audience as this, of Deuteronomy chapter 6:3-9: \u201cThese words which I am commanding you today\u201d\u2014you have to possess\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you have to love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, mind\u2014\u201cAnd they shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently\u2014\u201d Train them every day\u2014as you walk through your house, as you live out your life\u2014modeling what this Book calls us to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDon\u2019t let the ministry seduce you into ignoring your primary ministry to your spouse and family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to embrace the same goal, as a couple. If you\u2019re going to be successful in your ministry of raising children, you must agree on a single set of blueprints for building those children. Now, the problem is\u2014he\u2019s got a set of blue prints\u2014she\u2019s got a set of blueprints. Sometimes, they overlap a little, but we assume our blueprints are the same. They hand us a baby, they call us Mom and Dad, and we begin the process of realizing we\u2019re different. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe came from vastly different backgrounds and families. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I started out, I began to write out all the things I wanted to teach our kids\u2014started out to be 25 things I wanted to teach our kids. \u201cThis is overwhelming,\u201d\u2014so, I decided to do something different. I took the better part of a year\u2014and I went and interviewed theologians, pastors, and biblically-anchored counselors\u2014asking them, \u201cWhat is the essence of parenting? What is the essence that this Book teaches?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll tell you what I found. I found there are four things:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one: Identity\u2014spiritual and sexual identity. It\u2019s where the Bible begins in Genesis 1:27: \u201cHe created them male and female in the image of God.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIn the image of God he created them.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are image-bearers made for a relationship with God and also to be image-bearers to a broken world. They need to understand their spiritual address\u2014their spiritual identity. To do that, they have to know who God is and think rightly about who God is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s an opportunity\u2014as you raise them\u2014to teach them about faith in God\u2014and may I just give you one little warning? Don\u2019t freak out if they have doubts. Why?\u2014because you and I have doubts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of my favorite quotes\u2014that wraps up kind a how I finally became on fire for Jesus Christ\u2014came from a chaplain of the Washington Redskins, Tom Skinner. He said this: \u201cI spent a long time trying to come to grips with my doubts, when suddenly I realized, I better come to grips with what I believe.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI have since moved from the agony of questions I still can\u2019t answer to the reality of answers that are inescapable\u2014and it\u2019s a great relief.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDon\u2019t freak out when your kids have doubts. Thank them for coming to you and talk about how you have had your doubts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSpiritual identity\u2014sexual identity\u2014we must own training our children to know what it means to be a man\u2014and distinctly a man\u2014and a woman\u2014and distinctly a woman. If we don\u2019t, the world will. This is an urgent issue today. We\u2019ve got to provide it\u2014sexual training for our children\u2014sexual identity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly: Relationships. You know what our Savior said when He was asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s the greatest commandment?\u201d He wrapped it up and said\u2014it is relationships\u2014relationships with God\u2014love Him, relationships with people\u2014love them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were made, by God, for relationship\u2014with Him and with others. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour home is the training ground\u2014the incubator for modeling how two selfish, sinful, depraved, human beings relate to each other. Use your failures to teach your children. Show them how two broken people learn to love and be loved, how they ask for forgiveness when they\u2019ve wronged another, and how they forgive one another. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn more than one occasion, I would stop in the midst of an argument with Barbara\u2014heated exchange\u2014disagreement\u2014whatever you want to call it\u2014because our kids kind of circled us, going like a tennis match, back and forth. I would stop and say, \u201cTime out, Barbara.\u201d I\u2019d turn to the kids and say, \u201cYour mom and I have a disagreement; alright? This happens between human beings. We\u2019re okay. We\u2019re committed. We\u2019re not going anywhere,\u201d\u2014and by the way, they need to know that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird: Character. That\u2019s what the Book of Proverbs is all about\u2014wisdom and not foolishness\u2014choosing right, not wrong. As parents, we are to equip, train, coach, and guide them through the traps that they are going to face in life. That\u2019s what the father did in Proverbs\u2014didn\u2019t he?\u20145 through 7\u2014character. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFourth one: Mission. Neil Postman writes in his book, <em>The Disappearance of Childhood<\/em>, \u201cOur children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see.\u201d The family is the original Great Commission Training Center. This is a spiritual relay race\u2014one where we have to be multiplying out disciples, who have a vision for the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt can take all forms of application. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey all don\u2019t have to be in \u201cvocational Christian ministry\u201d to have a Great Commission mindset. You know some of the things you can do? Take them with you on a mission trip. Expose them to missionaries. Hear their stories\u2014let them share their stories\u2014let your kids hear it. Read stories to them about those who have modeled sacrificial service. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just add this\u2014you want to go near the heart of God? Take them near the orphan. I was asked to speak at a\u2014I think it was called Light Festival. It was in a cornfield\u201425 bands. There were 100,000 people in that field. And I followed a band, where the guys were jumping, this high off the ground, with their guitars; and I\u2019m on the stage, about to walk off, to speak about going near the needs of the orphan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really feel like that\u2019s what God wanted me to speak on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll I can see and hear is the chatter of all these kids, as I begin to give my message. Well, by the time I was over, I was going\u2014\u201cThat was the biggest dud message I\u2019ve ever given.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne thing I didn\u2019t mention to you\u2014that you should know\u2014is that I took my two sons-in-law and three of my grandsons with me to go do that speaking engagement\u2014so they were in the audience. When we were on the plane going back, one of them asked me\u2014one of my sons-in-law\u2014asked me\u2014he said, \u201cHow do you think it went?\u201d I said, \u201cPitiful. I didn\u2019t feel like anybody was listening.\u201d There\u2019s this little voice, from the dark of the plane, goes\u2014\u201cI was listening, Papa. I want to start an orphan ministry in my church.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod is a mischievous God\u2014and now the rest of the story. I didn\u2019t know that Michael and Ashley, my daughter, had been talking about orphans. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was all they needed to goad them to finally launch an orphan community in their church and empty their county of all foster care kids, who need Christian homes to go to. Our God is going to use you in ways you will not even imagine\u2014in spite of you! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne last point\u2014just a word about rebels and prodigals. What do you do when things don\u2019t turn out to be a Norman Rockwell painting? Well, I want you to know there\u2019s a reason why the Bible is filled with stories of dysfunctional people and dysfunctional families. Do you know why it is? Because we\u2019re dysfunctional. I don\u2019t know how perfect you want to make my family\u2014but I\u2019m going to promise you something\u2014it\u2019s not perfect. You\u2019ve got to learn that children aren\u2019t robots. They have to hammer out their own faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Perfect Father\u2014who had the perfect Garden\u2014had two prodigals. You have to learn to protect your marriage in the midst of a prodigal. And\u2026one warning\u2014being a parent is a set-up for being an enabler\u2014rescuing a child when they need to hit rock bottom. I\u2019m going to tell you something\u2014I\u2019ve allowed an adult child to hit rock bottom. It is one of the most courageous things I have ever done. To keep my hands out of it\u2014it is so unnatural.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd finally, as you think about your ministry, you need to realize your assignment in ministry was never based upon perfection in your life. It is a gift from God. In the midst of the ugliness of it all, He\u2019s going to use you in your family\u2014for generations to come.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Again, this week, we\u2019ve had the chance to hear some of what you shared with students and faculty. We haven\u2019t mentioned faculty, but there were some of your old professors were there, listening to you; weren\u2019t there? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. They were\u2014not many of them\u2014but I had a lot of fun with them. At one point, I offered a book on romance to the professor who needed it the most. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s got to be a bold professor, who\u2019s going to come forward to get that one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They looked like the frozen chosen, right there. They did not move! They didn\u2019t grin. They all were kind of looking at each other. Finally, one guy just stood up and said, \u201cGive me the book! I read a blog post\u2014this was a number of months ago. It was a dad who was writing and he wrote, \u201cThings I Would Do Differently If I Was Starting Over as a Parent.\u201d I thought, \u201cEverybody could write that blog post.\u201d We all have things we would do differently if we had a second time around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We underestimate the power of children in our lives to redeem us from ourselves\u2014to redeem us from our selfishness\u2014and to frankly, cause us to become more like Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> As you had an opportunity to address students and their spouses at Dallas Theological Seminary, not long ago\u2014you had four days during their spiritual-emphasis week\u2014you talked about marriage, and you talked about parenting. You talked about really having an eternal focus when it comes to the assignment that God\u2019s given us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. I think\u2014for those in the ministry\u2014sometimes, the ministry can\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014compete with our assignment from God, to be a mom and dad. You don\u2019t have to be in the ministry to experience that. You can experience that in business. You can experience that in working at your church\u2014volunteer work. You can even allow your children to rob your marriage of its romance and its relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s a real interesting tension here that we all experience. Let\u2019s put it out there\u2014let\u2019s be honest about it\u2014and lets encourage one another to really be all that God called us to be\u2014as a man, a woman, a husband, a wife, a mom, a dad, a grandparent, maybe\u2014and not waste any of what God\u2019s given us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here\u2019s how you encouraged and challenged the students you spoke to recently at Dallas Seminary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I doubt that John Stott had raising children in mind when he made the following statement: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cLife is a pilgrimage of learning, a voyage of discovery, in which our mistaken views are corrected, our distorted notions are adjusted, our shallow opinions deepened, and some of our vast ignorances are diminished.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things that God used in my life\u2014to correct my views, adjust my notions, deepen my convictions, and diminish my ignorance\u2014has been my wife and family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChildren are a blessing\u2014Psalm 127:3 through 5: \u201cBehold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hands of the warrior are the children of one\u2019s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChildren are also God\u2019s last chance for us, as parents, to grow up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mistakenly thought that God gave me six children to help them grow up. I determined and discovered that God gave us six to help <em>me<\/em> finish the process of moving from boyhood to manhood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChildren are teachers who have divine assignments. They have taught us so much, but one of the most important things they\u2019ve taught us is\u2014they have solidified our doctrine of depravity\u2014[Laughter]\u2014our own depravity, not theirs. Yes, it\u2019s clear they\u2019re selfish, but I am amazed what\u2019s been revealed of what\u2019s in my heart. Children are redemptive. They have saved Barbara and me from toxic self-absorption. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of life is about redemption\u2014taking broken people and doing something marvelous and redeeming them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s one last thing children have taught us. Children can confront us with the forgotten commandment. Exodus 20, verse 12: \u201cHonor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat is it about us\u2014as adults\u2014as we think about our parents, that we want to bash and blame? Looking back at their failures, pulling out a microscope, and focusing on what they didn\u2019t do\u2014and somehow feeling pious and justified? It\u2019s the heart of a Pharisee. To be sure, parents have done evil things\u2014I\u2019m not talking about that\u2014but you and I, my friend, have a responsibility, back to the fifth commandment: \u201cHonor your mother and you father, that it may go well with you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the guys we had on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> was RV Brown. RV works with youth. I forget about how big his biceps are. [Laughter] But RV grew up in a family where he was number 17 of 18 children. His dad, Willy Fish Brown, couldn\u2019t read or write\u2014but he knew the Bible, and he <em>lived<\/em> the Bible. One of the fun things about a national radio program is you give them a chance to express a tribute to a father\u2014to a mother. I want you to listen to some golden audio of one man\u2019s appreciation for Willy Fish Brown.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Audio Clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>RV Brown:<\/strong> Daddy Fish, I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, first of all, for loving my momma and, then secondly, for loving me, and kissing me,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and rubbing my little round head, and telling me to go to school and everything was going to be okay. And then Dad, I want to thank you for taking me fishing, July 6, 1959, for the first time. Today, my son fishes\u2014I took him to the same spot, Daddy\u2014and we stood there until he caught a fish. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDad, I want to just tell you what an awesome leader you was. With no education Dad, you taught me. You educated me how to love\u2014how to appreciate you, Dad\u2014not only how to appreciate you but to enjoy my life today because of what you did and how you loved me, Dad. I wish I could hug you today, Dad. When I look at your picture and mom picture over my head in my easy chair, I always look at it and say, \u201cDaddy, am I doing okay? Am I loving my wife the way you loved my mom?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThank you for taking me fishing and sitting down, talking with me, on the bank when nothing was biting. Dad, thank you for teaching me how to farm and to take\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014care of other people and share whatever I got with other people, Dad. I\u2019m the kind of a man I am today because of who you are, Dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just pray for other dads\u2014that they love their children and love their wives the way my dad loved my mama and loved us. Thank you\u2014Dad and Mom\u2014for being who you are. You live to this day inside of me, Dad. Every day I wake up, I see you Dad. I see you\u2014I see your smile, I see the way you walk, I see the way you talk to people. It\u2019s the same thing Dad, as is happening all over again because of what you did, Dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWilly Fish, you\u2019re a special man. Willy Fish, you\u2019re a godly man. Even though you couldn\u2019t read, you taught me how to love through the Word of God\u2014and not only couldn\u2019t read it\u2014but you <em>explained<\/em> it to me, Father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDad, thank you for being my dad. I wouldn\u2019t want nobody else to be my dad but you, Dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThank you for loving Momma. Thank you for the leadership and the authority in which you raised us in. Thank you for the discipline. Dad, I love you\u2014and one day I\u2019ll spend eternity with you. Thanks, Dad!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[End Audio Clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s the most powerful institution on the planet\u2014it\u2019s where we learn right from wrong, we learn how to love, we get a glimpse of God. In its broken form, it\u2019s still what God created\u2014a family. I\u2019ve got three points for you, as I wrap up here:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber One: Children are your responsibility. If you\u2019re married and you have children\u2014your ministry begins at home. I don\u2019t need to remind such an astute audience as this, of Deuteronomy chapter 6:3-9: \u201cThese words which I am commanding you today\u201d\u2014you have to possess\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you have to love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, mind\u2014\u201cAnd they shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently\u2014\u201d Train them every day\u2014as you walk through your house, as you live out your life\u2014modeling what this Book calls us to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDon\u2019t let the ministry seduce you into ignoring your primary ministry to your spouse and family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to embrace the same goal, as a couple. If you\u2019re going to be successful in your ministry of raising children, you must agree on a single set of blueprints for building those children. Now, the problem is\u2014he\u2019s got a set of blue prints\u2014she\u2019s got a set of blueprints. Sometimes, they overlap a little, but we assume our blueprints are the same. They hand us a baby, they call us Mom and Dad, and we begin the process of realizing we\u2019re different. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe came from vastly different backgrounds and families. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I started out, I began to write out all the things I wanted to teach our kids\u2014started out to be 25 things I wanted to teach our kids. \u201cThis is overwhelming,\u201d\u2014so, I decided to do something different. I took the better part of a year\u2014and I went and interviewed theologians, pastors, and biblically-anchored counselors\u2014asking them, \u201cWhat is the essence of parenting? What is the essence that this Book teaches?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll tell you what I found. I found there are four things:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one: Identity\u2014spiritual and sexual identity. It\u2019s where the Bible begins in Genesis 1:27: \u201cHe created them male and female in the image of God.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIn the image of God he created them.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are image-bearers made for a relationship with God and also to be image-bearers to a broken world. They need to understand their spiritual address\u2014their spiritual identity. To do that, they have to know who God is and think rightly about who God is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s an opportunity\u2014as you raise them\u2014to teach them about faith in God\u2014and may I just give you one little warning? Don\u2019t freak out if they have doubts. Why?\u2014because you and I have doubts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of my favorite quotes\u2014that wraps up kind a how I finally became on fire for Jesus Christ\u2014came from a chaplain of the Washington Redskins, Tom Skinner. He said this: \u201cI spent a long time trying to come to grips with my doubts, when suddenly I realized, I better come to grips with what I believe.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI have since moved from the agony of questions I still can\u2019t answer to the reality of answers that are inescapable\u2014and it\u2019s a great relief.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDon\u2019t freak out when your kids have doubts. Thank them for coming to you and talk about how you have had your doubts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSpiritual identity\u2014sexual identity\u2014we must own training our children to know what it means to be a man\u2014and distinctly a man\u2014and a woman\u2014and distinctly a woman. If we don\u2019t, the world will. This is an urgent issue today. We\u2019ve got to provide it\u2014sexual training for our children\u2014sexual identity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly: Relationships. You know what our Savior said when He was asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s the greatest commandment?\u201d He wrapped it up and said\u2014it is relationships\u2014relationships with God\u2014love Him, relationships with people\u2014love them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were made, by God, for relationship\u2014with Him and with others. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour home is the training ground\u2014the incubator for modeling how two selfish, sinful, depraved, human beings relate to each other. Use your failures to teach your children. Show them how two broken people learn to love and be loved, how they ask for forgiveness when they\u2019ve wronged another, and how they forgive one another. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn more than one occasion, I would stop in the midst of an argument with Barbara\u2014heated exchange\u2014disagreement\u2014whatever you want to call it\u2014because our kids kind of circled us, going like a tennis match, back and forth. I would stop and say, \u201cTime out, Barbara.\u201d I\u2019d turn to the kids and say, \u201cYour mom and I have a disagreement; alright? This happens between human beings. We\u2019re okay. We\u2019re committed. We\u2019re not going anywhere,\u201d\u2014and by the way, they need to know that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird: Character. That\u2019s what the Book of Proverbs is all about\u2014wisdom and not foolishness\u2014choosing right, not wrong. As parents, we are to equip, train, coach, and guide them through the traps that they are going to face in life. That\u2019s what the father did in Proverbs\u2014didn\u2019t he?\u20145 through 7\u2014character. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFourth one: Mission. Neil Postman writes in his book, <em>The Disappearance of Childhood<\/em>, \u201cOur children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see.\u201d The family is the original Great Commission Training Center. This is a spiritual relay race\u2014one where we have to be multiplying out disciples, who have a vision for the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt can take all forms of application. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey all don\u2019t have to be in \u201cvocational Christian ministry\u201d to have a Great Commission mindset. You know some of the things you can do? Take them with you on a mission trip. Expose them to missionaries. Hear their stories\u2014let them share their stories\u2014let your kids hear it. Read stories to them about those who have modeled sacrificial service. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just add this\u2014you want to go near the heart of God? Take them near the orphan. I was asked to speak at a\u2014I think it was called Light Festival. It was in a cornfield\u201425 bands. There were 100,000 people in that field. And I followed a band, where the guys were jumping, this high off the ground, with their guitars; and I\u2019m on the stage, about to walk off, to speak about going near the needs of the orphan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really feel like that\u2019s what God wanted me to speak on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll I can see and hear is the chatter of all these kids, as I begin to give my message. Well, by the time I was over, I was going\u2014\u201cThat was the biggest dud message I\u2019ve ever given.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne thing I didn\u2019t mention to you\u2014that you should know\u2014is that I took my two sons-in-law and three of my grandsons with me to go do that speaking engagement\u2014so they were in the audience. When we were on the plane going back, one of them asked me\u2014one of my sons-in-law\u2014asked me\u2014he said, \u201cHow do you think it went?\u201d I said, \u201cPitiful. I didn\u2019t feel like anybody was listening.\u201d There\u2019s this little voice, from the dark of the plane, goes\u2014\u201cI was listening, Papa. I want to start an orphan ministry in my church.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod is a mischievous God\u2014and now the rest of the story. I didn\u2019t know that Michael and Ashley, my daughter, had been talking about orphans. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was all they needed to goad them to finally launch an orphan community in their church and empty their county of all foster care kids, who need Christian homes to go to. Our God is going to use you in ways you will not even imagine\u2014in spite of you! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne last point\u2014just a word about rebels and prodigals. What do you do when things don\u2019t turn out to be a Norman Rockwell painting? Well, I want you to know there\u2019s a reason why the Bible is filled with stories of dysfunctional people and dysfunctional families. Do you know why it is? Because we\u2019re dysfunctional. I don\u2019t know how perfect you want to make my family\u2014but I\u2019m going to promise you something\u2014it\u2019s not perfect. You\u2019ve got to learn that children aren\u2019t robots. They have to hammer out their own faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Perfect Father\u2014who had the perfect Garden\u2014had two prodigals. You have to learn to protect your marriage in the midst of a prodigal. And\u2026one warning\u2014being a parent is a set-up for being an enabler\u2014rescuing a child when they need to hit rock bottom. I\u2019m going to tell you something\u2014I\u2019ve allowed an adult child to hit rock bottom. It is one of the most courageous things I have ever done. To keep my hands out of it\u2014it is so unnatural.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd finally, as you think about your ministry, you need to realize your assignment in ministry was never based upon perfection in your life. It is a gift from God. In the midst of the ugliness of it all, He\u2019s going to use you in your family\u2014for generations to come.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Again, this week, we\u2019ve had the chance to hear some of what you shared with students and faculty. We haven\u2019t mentioned faculty, but there were some of your old professors were there, listening to you; weren\u2019t there? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. They were\u2014not many of them\u2014but I had a lot of fun with them. At one point, I offered a book on romance to the professor who needed it the most. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s got to be a bold professor, who\u2019s going to come forward to get that one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They looked like the frozen chosen, right there. They did not move! They didn\u2019t grin. They all were kind of looking at each other. Finally, one guy just stood up and said, \u201cGive me the book! I\u2019m the guy.\u201d The students all applauded the guy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ll bet\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014because I said, at that point\u2014I said, \u201cYou know, we must have the most romantic faculty, here at Dallas Theological Seminary, of any seminary in America because none of them need this book on romance.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We have had a lot of our listeners who have been coming to our website this week to watch the videos of the presentations that you made at Dallas Seminary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are available in their entirety, uninterrupted, on video.
