Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine. How does a man do battle against the temptation to look at pornography? We\u2019ll explore that subject today. Stay with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Wednesday edition. When you went to seminary, did you feel like you were in a bubble for a couple of years? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes. No doubt about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That you were in a spiritually-protected kind of an environment? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Great experience at Dallas Theological Seminary, going from class to class, doing nothing but studying the Bible from <em>great <\/em>patriarchs\u2014from guys who were some of the smartest\u2014most educated\u2014but also the real deal, Bob. There\u2019s no question\u2014in that context\u2014that it is easy to get insulated from the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>I just wondered\u2014as you were talking with students at Dallas Seminary recently, and you talked about the things that can invade a marriage and a family\u2014you talked about, as we\u2019ll hear today\u2014pornography and about emotional affairs. I wondered how many folks had been insulated from that kind of thinking or how many have already experienced it seeping through the cracks of their\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ve got one thing I\u2019ll show you, Bob. What am I holding up right here? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re holding up your smartphone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m holding up a screen. Nobody\u2019s in a bubble anymore. Now, they may have an experience of going to a seminary and immersing yourself in the Scriptures\u2014but you know what? This right here is like a terrorist\u2014this phone can terrorize your soul and control all kinds of stuff before your eyes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, I opened my Bible here and it says, \u201cKeep your heart with all vigilance for from it flow the springs of life.\u201d It goes on to say, \u201cPonder the path of your feet. Then, all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left. Turn your foot away from evil.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to tell you something, Bob\u2014pornography is <em>assaulting <\/em>our nation. Boys and girls\u2014men and women\u2014no one can escape this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd pornography is not just the stuff in the magazines. I think a lot of stuff that\u2019s on billboards today would qualify as pornography. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had the opportunity to address this subject with students at Dallas Seminary as you spoke on four successive days about issues they can expect to face in marriage and in family. Let\u2019s listen today to part of a message that you shared with students about some of these invaders that are finding their way into marriages and families\u2014and the statistics are alarming. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Promise Keepers found that 60 percent of all men and a third of the pastors had seen pornography in the last 30 days. If you have a boy, a grandson, it is not a matter of <em>if<\/em> your son has seen pornography\u2014and I might add your daughter\u2014it\u2019s a matter of <em>when<\/em> they will see it\u2014and how much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a friend who called me, whose 12-year-old daughter\u2014he and his wife are doing a great job with her\u2014good boundaries, healthy home, good conversation, all the good sex ed and prep for adolescence\u2014gone to a friend\u2019s house, friend pulled out a phone who had access that she didn\u2019t, exposed to pornography in an instant. This screen-generation is robbing our sons and daughters\u2014men and women of their innocence. The age now of a boy seeing porn is between the ages of eight and ten\u2014I was twenty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, there\u2019s the increasing number of women who are into romance novels. Bill O\u2019Reilly made 28 million on the sales of his book. Suzanne Collins\u2019 <em>The Hunger Games<\/em> made 55 million\u2014but author E.L. James topped the Forbes richest author list for selling <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what do you do? The terrorist has attacked. Some of us are carrying some heavy baggage. You can\u2019t keep carrying it into ministry\u2014and bring into your marriage and your ministry\u2014and think you\u2019re going to be able to carry it for the next 20 years. What do you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one: It is only a continued experience of the fear of God\u2014and the love of God\u2014that can turn our hearts away from evil. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is not the fist of God that you are afraid of, just by itself\u2014although we need to be afraid of that\u2014it is the grace of God\u2014the love of God\u2014that invites us away from it. You know what\u2019s going on in your life!\u00a0 We all have issues that we struggle with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPersonally, I think we need some fresh teaching, coupling both the love of God and the fear of God together, to raise the standard to who God is. Why? A.W. Tozer said it best, \u201cWhat you think about God is the most important thing about you.\u201d Why?\u2014because as we think about God, it reorders our identity\u2014who we are and who we are accountable to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber two: Know your weaknesses. As you know your weaknesses, counsel your soul. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you and I went to dinner tonight in a section of Dallas and we got mugged\u2014we got robbed\u2014would you like to join me again tomorrow night to go there? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould you go to the same section of town and keep getting mugged? No. In fact, it reminds me of a great quote by the English preacher, D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. Listen carefully to this. It talks about counseling your soul\u2014this is a <em>great <\/em>statement: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you\u2019re listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think Lewis Sperry Chafer would really like this next statement\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe main art in the matter of spiritual living is to know how to handle yourself. You have to take yourself in hand. You have to address yourself\u2014question yourself. You must say to your soul, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHope thou in God instead of muttering in this depressed, unhappy way.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, you must go on to remind yourself of God\u2014who God is, and what God is, and what God has done, and what God has pledged Himself to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLewis Sperry Chafer is really the reason for Spiritual Life Week, here at Dallas Seminary. He believed all of this was about forming character. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird: Know that\u2014as a single man or as a married man\u2014solo-sex siphons off energy and a drive that God gave you to pursue the opposite sex. Did you hear me? I\u2019ll say it again. Know that\u2014as a single man or a married man\u2014solo-sex siphons off energy and a drive that God gave you for good\u2014that causes you to pursue the opposite sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have the oldest average age, in our nation\u2019s history, for men and women getting married\u201429 for men\u201427-and-a-half for women. I believe this subject is one of the primary reasons why\u2014men don\u2019t need women\u2014because they\u2019ve found a fantasy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPornography and solo-sex makes a man lazy. As a single man, you\u2019ll need no woman because you\u2019ve found a solution that isn\u2019t nearly as risky as relating to a real woman. A woman is dangerous! [Laughter] She is a <em>delight,<\/em> but it is one of God\u2019s <em>great <\/em>sanctifying tools in your life\u2014if you receive the gift. For married men, there\u2019s a new kind of marriage emerging called the low sex\u2014no sex marriage\u2014can basically be the same escape the single man makes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFourth: The bad news is\u2014if you build an addiction now, marriage may be an institution\u2014but it is no place for rehab. It is why one of the things I have done is talk to the young men who have come to ask for my daughter\u2019s hand in marriage. They\u2019ll come ask if it\u2019s all okay, I\u2019ll say, \u201cWell, you know what? You can\u2019t have the hand yet\u2014that comes on the wedding day\u2014but you can ask her to marry you. You and I have got six conversations to have before you get the hand and the rest of her. One of those conversations is about sex\u2014and it\u2019s about pornography\u2014\u201cHow much have you seen? Let\u2019s talk about it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI believe daddies need to be the protectors of their daughters\u2014and their sons.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFifth: Genesis 2:25 says, \u201cAnd the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.\u201d That\u2019s the transparency of marriage. Let your wife know when you are struggling with temptation. This may shock you, but I talk to my wife about lust. I tell her when I\u2019m struggling. What a relief that is to be loved like that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSixth: Build a fence at the top of the cliff rather than run an ambulance service at the bottom of it. If you can\u2019t handle it, don\u2019t subscribe to cable. Get some accountability software. Better yet\u2014get a friend you can call when you are tempted. Personally\u2014after being burned a couple of times\u2014I can\u2019t channel surf. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSeven: If you fail\u2014if you fail\u2014it\u2019s all about grace. Find a safe person\u2014come clean before God and that person\u2014but don\u2019t hide. Share what you have been struggling with\u2014share what you have done with a person who can help you get out of jail\u2014who can help you come free. Find a person who will speak the truth\u2014with grace\u2014to you and give that person access to your life. This may not be the area where you are being assaulted. There may be some area\u2014the same principle applies to that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a conversation with a guy, who is an accountability partner in my life\u2014a pastor. I\u2019ve known him for a number of years, and I was upset about something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was angry, and I wanted to wring someone\u2019s neck\u2014some ungodly anger. So, I went and had lunch with him. We broke bread and had a barbeque sandwich. He looked me in the eye, and kind of patted me on the shoulder, and gave me wisdom from the Book\u2014you with me? So, I saw him the next week at church. I said, \u201cI hope I get the chance to kick your tail like you kicked mine someday.\u201d [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEarly in my ministry, I had a young lady call me and ask to be counseled. It seemed pretty harmless\u2014she came into my office. It just so happened, that day\u2014that my wife, Barbara, was there\u2014she was in the external part. I left my door open\u2014as I do when I talk to women. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I remember\u2014when she came in\u2014I just sensed something was up. The longer she talked, the less comfortable I felt. I did not hear an audible voice, but I heard the Holy Spirit say, \u201cKeep your eyes up, son\u2014right on her eyes. Don\u2019t look down.\u201d Later, we found that there were three women\u2014who had kind of banded together in our community\u2014to take three of us Christian leaders down. You never know what\u2019s involved in a single choice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis next terrorist: Emotional affairs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost sexual affairs begin with a friendship: \u201cIt\u2019s just a relationship\u201d\u2014but there is a spark\u2014a catalytic spark that occurs. Protect the gift of sex\u2014don\u2019t be deceived. If you are married, reserve deep friendships with the opposite sex for just your wife\u2014I have some women that I am friends with, but it\u2019s like skipping a rock across a lake compared to the relationship with Barbara. When you sense or feel that spark, terminate that relationship, if need be, and protect your covenant. Protect your relationship with God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis next terrorist is front and center: Sexual affairs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSometimes, the assault can be frontal. Sometimes, it can come in through a side door\u2014a backdoor\u2014but we can get entangled in something, and we can get swept off our feet. Sexual affairs today, range from being attracted to a woman to being attracted to someone of the same sex. I want to remind you that temptation is not a sin. Temptation is just what it is\u2014a temptation. It is when we take the bait that sin is born, and it tricks us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRealize that it is impossible for your spouse to compete with a fantasy relationship. You may go home to your children and to a wife who has had a hard day or\u2014as a wife, you may have worked hard and come home to a husband who has had a hard day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re both going through hard things in life. Meanwhile, you start a relationship, off to the side\u2014that is born in a fantasy world of little reality\u2014swept off your feet by emotions that becomes an affair. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you are pursuing a relationship that is headed in that direction, right now\u2014and I am not so na\u00efve as to think\u2014in this audience of men and women of God\u2014that there are not those who are struggling with this very issue\u2014you must terminate it. Your life, your marriage, your family, your ministry hang in the balance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a speaker team that speaks at our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> marriage conferences. We have a little tradition that we do\u2014we\u2019ll come up to each other, extend the hand, and say, \u201cAre you clean?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat doesn\u2019t ensure each person is going to be clean, but every man\u2014every woman\u2014on that team knows that occasionally they are going to get asked that question. As a result, they know there is an accountability structure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis last terrorist is a subtle one: Debt\u2014D-E-B-T. Do you realize how dangerous credit cards are? I\u2019m going to tell you\u2014I\u2019ve been in ministry a long time. I am <em>astounded<\/em> at how people lose control around credit cards, borrowing money, and get way in over their heads. This includes everybody from doctors, to pastors, to people who sit in the pew. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had one man\u2014who was in leadership in a ministry\u2014who had over $130,000 of consumer debt with about seven credit cards. He had a million-dollar house\u2014a $10,000-a-month house payment\u2014and 2008 hit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can\u2019t live on the brink. Fortunately, God gave me the gift of a great father\u2014for in 1960, when credit cards first came on the scene, my dad applied for a credit card. You know what happened? He couldn\u2019t get one. Why? He had no credit history\u2014he had never borrowed a penny. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDebt\u2014giving God the opportunity to show up instead of just satisfying your desires as they occur. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019ve been listening to some of what you shared with students at Dallas Seminary. You kind of tiptoed near some landmines there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I did\u2014and Bob\u2014I was just trying to prepare them for what they\u2019re going to face not only now, but later on as they begin their ministries\u2014whether here in America or internationally. I just think a lot of followers of Christ are na\u00efve about what\u2019s taking place today. There are a lot of them being taken out by pornography, by extramarital affairs\u2014and also by debt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And the fact that you\u2019ve been to seminary doesn\u2019t insulate you from that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It doesn\u2019t\u2014and the people you are going to minister to\u2014this is what everybody is dealing with. I mean, this is the stuff of this culture. We have to be wise. When you went to seminary, did you feel like you were in a bubble for a couple of years? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes. No doubt about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That you were in a spiritually-protected kind of an environment? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Great experience at Dallas Theological Seminary, going from class to class, doing nothing but studying the Bible from <em>great <\/em>patriarchs\u2014from guys who were some of the smartest\u2014most educated\u2014but also the real deal, Bob. There\u2019s no question\u2014in that context\u2014that it is easy to get insulated from the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>I just wondered\u2014as you were talking with students at Dallas Seminary recently, and you talked about the things that can invade a marriage and a family\u2014you talked about, as we\u2019ll hear today\u2014pornography and about emotional affairs. I wondered how many folks had been insulated from that kind of thinking or how many have already experienced it seeping through the cracks of their\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ve got one thing I\u2019ll show you, Bob. What am I holding up right here? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re holding up your smartphone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m holding up a screen. Nobody\u2019s in a bubble anymore. Now, they may have an experience of going to a seminary and immersing yourself in the Scriptures\u2014but you know what? This right here is like a terrorist\u2014this phone can terrorize your soul and control all kinds of stuff before your eyes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, I opened my Bible here and it says, \u201cKeep your heart with all vigilance for from it flow the springs of life.\u201d It goes on to say, \u201cPonder the path of your feet. Then, all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left. Turn your foot away from evil.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to tell you something, Bob\u2014pornography is <em>assaulting <\/em>our nation. Boys and girls\u2014men and women\u2014no one can escape this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd pornography is not just the stuff in the magazines. I think a lot of stuff that\u2019s on billboards today would qualify as pornography. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had the opportunity to address this subject with students at Dallas Seminary as you spoke on four successive days about issues they can expect to face in marriage and in family. Let\u2019s listen today to part of a message that you shared with students about some of these invaders that are finding their way into marriages and families\u2014and the statistics are alarming. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Promise Keepers found that 60 percent of all men and a third of the pastors had seen pornography in the last 30 days. If you have a boy, a grandson, it is not a matter of <em>if<\/em> your son has seen pornography\u2014and I might add your daughter\u2014it\u2019s a matter of <em>when<\/em> they will see it\u2014and how much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a friend who called me, whose 12-year-old daughter\u2014he and his wife are doing a great job with her\u2014good boundaries, healthy home, good conversation, all the good sex ed and prep for adolescence\u2014gone to a friend\u2019s house, friend pulled out a phone who had access that she didn\u2019t, exposed to pornography in an instant. This screen-generation is robbing our sons and daughters\u2014men and women of their innocence. The age now of a boy seeing porn is between the ages of eight and ten\u2014I was twenty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, there\u2019s the increasing number of women who are into romance novels. Bill O\u2019Reilly made 28 million on the sales of his book. Suzanne Collins\u2019 <em>The Hunger Games<\/em> made 55 million\u2014but author E.L. James topped the Forbes richest author list for selling <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what do you do? The terrorist has attacked. Some of us are carrying some heavy baggage. You can\u2019t keep carrying it into ministry\u2014and bring into your marriage and your ministry\u2014and think you\u2019re going to be able to carry it for the next 20 years. What do you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one: It is only a continued experience of the fear of God\u2014and the love of God\u2014that can turn our hearts away from evil. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is not the fist of God that you are afraid of, just by itself\u2014although we need to be afraid of that\u2014it is the grace of God\u2014the love of God\u2014that invites us away from it. You know what\u2019s going on in your life!\u00a0 We all have issues that we struggle with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPersonally, I think we need some fresh teaching, coupling both the love of God and the fear of God together, to raise the standard to who God is. Why? A.W. Tozer said it best, \u201cWhat you think about God is the most important thing about you.\u201d Why?\u2014because as we think about God, it reorders our identity\u2014who we are and who we are accountable to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber two: Know your weaknesses. As you know your weaknesses, counsel your soul. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you and I went to dinner tonight in a section of Dallas and we got mugged\u2014we got robbed\u2014would you like to join me again tomorrow night to go there? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould you go to the same section of town and keep getting mugged? No. In fact, it reminds me of a great quote by the English preacher, D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. Listen carefully to this. It talks about counseling your soul\u2014this is a <em>great <\/em>statement: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you\u2019re listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think Lewis Sperry Chafer would really like this next statement\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe main art in the matter of spiritual living is to know how to handle yourself. You have to take yourself in hand. You have to address yourself\u2014question yourself. You must say to your soul, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHope thou in God instead of muttering in this depressed, unhappy way.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, you must go on to remind yourself of God\u2014who God is, and what God is, and what God has done, and what God has pledged Himself to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLewis Sperry Chafer is really the reason for Spiritual Life Week, here at Dallas Seminary. He believed all of this was about forming character. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird: Know that\u2014as a single man or as a married man\u2014solo-sex siphons off energy and a drive that God gave you to pursue the opposite sex. Did you hear me? I\u2019ll say it again. Know that\u2014as a single man or a married man\u2014solo-sex siphons off energy and a drive that God gave you for good\u2014that causes you to pursue the opposite sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have the oldest average age, in our nation\u2019s history, for men and women getting married\u201429 for men\u201427-and-a-half for women. I believe this subject is one of the primary reasons why\u2014men don\u2019t need women\u2014because they\u2019ve found a fantasy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPornography and solo-sex makes a man lazy. As a single man, you\u2019ll need no woman because you\u2019ve found a solution that isn\u2019t nearly as risky as relating to a real woman. A woman is dangerous! [Laughter] She is a <em>delight,<\/em> but it is one of God\u2019s <em>great <\/em>sanctifying tools in your life\u2014if you receive the gift. For married men, there\u2019s a new kind of marriage emerging called the low sex\u2014no sex marriage\u2014can basically be the same escape the single man makes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFourth: The bad news is\u2014if you build an addiction now, marriage may be an institution\u2014but it is no place for rehab. It is why one of the things I have done is talk to the young men who have come to ask for my daughter\u2019s hand in marriage. They\u2019ll come ask if it\u2019s all okay, I\u2019ll say, \u201cWell, you know what? You can\u2019t have the hand yet\u2014that comes on the wedding day\u2014but you can ask her to marry you. You and I have got six conversations to have before you get the hand and the rest of her. One of those conversations is about sex\u2014and it\u2019s about pornography\u2014\u201cHow much have you seen? Let\u2019s talk about it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI believe daddies need to be the protectors of their daughters\u2014and their sons.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFifth: Genesis 2:25 says, \u201cAnd the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.\u201d That\u2019s the transparency of marriage. Let your wife know when you are struggling with temptation. This may shock you, but I talk to my wife about lust. I tell her when I\u2019m struggling. What a relief that is to be loved like that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSixth: Build a fence at the top of the cliff rather than run an ambulance service at the bottom of it. If you can\u2019t handle it, don\u2019t subscribe to cable. Get some accountability software. Better yet\u2014get a friend you can call when you are tempted. Personally\u2014after being burned a couple of times\u2014I can\u2019t channel surf. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSeven: If you fail\u2014if you fail\u2014it\u2019s all about grace. Find a safe person\u2014come clean before God and that person\u2014but don\u2019t hide. Share what you have been struggling with\u2014share what you have done with a person who can help you get out of jail\u2014who can help you come free. Find a person who will speak the truth\u2014with grace\u2014to you and give that person access to your life. This may not be the area where you are being assaulted. There may be some area\u2014the same principle applies to that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a conversation with a guy, who is an accountability partner in my life\u2014a pastor. I\u2019ve known him for a number of years, and I was upset about something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was angry, and I wanted to wring someone\u2019s neck\u2014some ungodly anger. So, I went and had lunch with him. We broke bread and had a barbeque sandwich. He looked me in the eye, and kind of patted me on the shoulder, and gave me wisdom from the Book\u2014you with me? So, I saw him the next week at church. I said, \u201cI hope I get the chance to kick your tail like you kicked mine someday.\u201d [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEarly in my ministry, I had a young lady call me and ask to be counseled. It seemed pretty harmless\u2014she came into my office. It just so happened, that day\u2014that my wife, Barbara, was there\u2014she was in the external part. I left my door open\u2014as I do when I talk to women. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I remember\u2014when she came in\u2014I just sensed something was up. The longer she talked, the less comfortable I felt. I did not hear an audible voice, but I heard the Holy Spirit say, \u201cKeep your eyes up, son\u2014right on her eyes. Don\u2019t look down.\u201d Later, we found that there were three women\u2014who had kind of banded together in our community\u2014to take three of us Christian leaders down. You never know what\u2019s involved in a single choice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis next terrorist: Emotional affairs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost sexual affairs begin with a friendship: \u201cIt\u2019s just a relationship\u201d\u2014but there is a spark\u2014a catalytic spark that occurs. Protect the gift of sex\u2014don\u2019t be deceived. If you are married, reserve deep friendships with the opposite sex for just your wife\u2014I have some women that I am friends with, but it\u2019s like skipping a rock across a lake compared to the relationship with Barbara. When you sense or feel that spark, terminate that relationship, if need be, and protect your covenant. Protect your relationship with God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis next terrorist is front and center: Sexual affairs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSometimes, the assault can be frontal. Sometimes, it can come in through a side door\u2014a backdoor\u2014but we can get entangled in something, and we can get swept off our feet. Sexual affairs today, range from being attracted to a woman to being attracted to someone of the same sex. I want to remind you that temptation is not a sin. Temptation is just what it is\u2014a temptation. It is when we take the bait that sin is born, and it tricks us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRealize that it is impossible for your spouse to compete with a fantasy relationship. You may go home to your children and to a wife who has had a hard day or\u2014as a wife, you may have worked hard and come home to a husband who has had a hard day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re both going through hard things in life. Meanwhile, you start a relationship, off to the side\u2014that is born in a fantasy world of little reality\u2014swept off your feet by emotions that becomes an affair. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you are pursuing a relationship that is headed in that direction, right now\u2014and I am not so na\u00efve as to think\u2014in this audience of men and women of God\u2014that there are not those who are struggling with this very issue\u2014you must terminate it. Your life, your marriage, your family, your ministry hang in the balance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a speaker team that speaks at our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> marriage conferences. We have a little tradition that we do\u2014we\u2019ll come up to each other, extend the hand, and say, \u201cAre you clean?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat doesn\u2019t ensure each person is going to be clean, but every man\u2014every woman\u2014on that team knows that occasionally they are going to get asked that question. As a result, they know there is an accountability structure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis last terrorist is a subtle one: Debt\u2014D-E-B-T. Do you realize how dangerous credit cards are? I\u2019m going to tell you\u2014I\u2019ve been in ministry a long time. I am <em>astounded<\/em> at how people lose control around credit cards, borrowing money, and get way in over their heads. This includes everybody from doctors, to pastors, to people who sit in the pew. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had one man\u2014who was in leadership in a ministry\u2014who had over $130,000 of consumer debt with about seven credit cards. He had a million-dollar house\u2014a $10,000-a-month house payment\u2014and 2008 hit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can\u2019t live on the brink. Fortunately, God gave me the gift of a great father\u2014for in 1960, when credit cards first came on the scene, my dad applied for a credit card. You know what happened? He couldn\u2019t get one. Why? He had no credit history\u2014he had never borrowed a penny. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDebt\u2014giving God the opportunity to show up instead of just satisfying your desires as they occur. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019ve been listening to some of what you shared with students at Dallas Seminary. You kind of tiptoed near some landmines there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I did\u2014and Bob\u2014I was just trying to prepare them for what they\u2019re going to face not only now, but later on as they begin their ministries\u2014whether here in America or internationally. I just think a lot of followers of Christ are na\u00efve about what\u2019s taking place today. There are a lot of them being taken out by pornography, by extramarital affairs\u2014and also by debt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And the fact that you\u2019ve been to seminary doesn\u2019t insulate you from that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It doesn\u2019t\u2014and the people you are going to minister to\u2014this is what everybody is dealing with. I mean, this is the stuff of this culture. We have to be wise.
