What they didn\u2019t realize was that God\u2019s plans were bigger than their plans were.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>We were sitting in the room. The social worker said, \u201cI have a boy that\u2019s six years old.\u201d She says, \u201cBut I also have his brother,\u201d and \u201cWould you consider taking both of them?\u201d Domingo said, \u201cYes, we would.\u201d I remember thinking: \u201cWe didn\u2019t talk about it! We didn\u2019t talk about it!\u201d I\u2019m thinking, \u201cLord\u2014one! We said one!\u201d All of a sudden, my heart was pounding; and I thought, \u201cI\u2019m in too deep.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, July 7<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. What Irene Garcia didn\u2019t realize, when she thought she was in too deep, was that she was still in the shallow end of the pool God had for her. We\u2019ll hear her story today. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>Thanks for joining us. You know, I have to wonder if couples\u2014who would look at their lives and their marriages and say: \u201cThis has been a bumpy ride. God\u2019s been at work, but we do have a lot of baggage in the past,\u201d\u2014I wonder if those couples would say: \u201cWe need to play it safe, from here on out; because with all the bumps we have had, we have all that we can handle, back in the early years. We just need kind of no turbulence from here to the finish line.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \u201cLet\u2019s just take it easy and coast all the way in.\u201d But the couple we have with us today didn\u2019t coast; in fact, if you\u2019re a listener and you don\u2019t have a seatbelt on, you could be in for a dangerous ride if you don\u2019t have a seatbelt on. [Laughter] Irene and Domingo Garcia join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Domingo\/Irene, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Thank you so much for having us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Irene has written a book called <em>Rich in Love<\/em>. You\u2019re about to hear, in the words of a famous broadcaster, \u201c\u2026the rest of the story.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s 1 Timothy 6\u2014where you pulled the title for the book; right?\u2014where it says \u201cteach those who are wealthy in this world to be rich in love\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right\u2014it\u2019s a great verse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You guys did have a rocky beginning. Your first decade of marriage was, as you describe it, \u201ca mucky, yucky mess.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, there\u2019s alcoholism\u2014you were drinking regularly\u2014right, Domingo?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes sir; I was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There was domestic violence going on. You\u2019d had a couple of kids. Irene, you were trying to plot your way out\u2014figured\u2014if you could save enough money, then just be done with this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you had one of your customers, at the hair salon where you worked\u2014who discipled you\u2014led you to Christ and discipled you. Domingo, you wound up coming to faith after being arrested on a DUI. You guys got into a good solid church\u2014got discipled along the way. Your family changed \/ your marriage changed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the point where I think a lot of couples would say: \u201cI like the smooth road a whole lot better than the bumpy road. Let\u2019s just stay on this kind of smooth, clear highway.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes: \u201cWe have two kids\u2014you know, it\u2019s kind of the perfect family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s the way America kind of views it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So Irene, you apparently like roller-coasters better than you like smooth roads because, at some point in all of this, God put an idea in your heart to expand your family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>He did. Domingo had been gone a lot\u2014so it was usually just me and the boys. I felt empty. Obviously, God was working on my heart. I just thought, \u201cWell, I would really like to adopt,\u201d\u2014I couldn\u2019t have any more kids. So I actually had mentioned it to Mary; and Mary told me, \u201cWell, pray about it, honey.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Mary is the woman who had led you to Christ?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes. Anyway, I had asked Domingo about it\u2014and asked him how he felt about it. He said: \u201cWell, Irene, things are going really well right now. Give it some time\u2014we\u2019ll talk about it later.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you think she was losing her mind, Domingo?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>No, I understood her emptiness; but I just felt we weren\u2019t ready. I felt we had a lot of healing to do yet, and I just didn\u2019t feel ready.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Well, I continued to pray about it. Then, one day, Domingo said: \u201cIrene, you know what? Go ahead and call the county. Go ahead and pursue adoption if you really feel that\u2019s something you want to do.\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cAre you kidding me?\u201d I couldn\u2019t believe it\u2014I was dancing\u2014I was just so excited. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I did. I called the county and got the ball rolling. Then the social worker came\u2014we had a meeting. She shared the story about how there was really a need for kids \/ and Mexican children to be adopted. We\u2019d be put right on the top of the list, and she liked us. So, we started this journey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, Domingo had told me that he didn\u2019t think they were going to give us any kids\u2014so he went along with it. [Laughter] He thought this would pacify me. We\u2019d go through this process and then get to the point and they\u2019d say: \u201cWell, you know what? I\u2019m sorry\u2014you\u2019re not going to get a child.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; hang on. So, when you said, \u201cYes, honey, call the county,\u201d you were thinking, \u201cThis will never happen.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes; I did. I knew my past and our track record. I felt they were just going to reject us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>As soon as they see your rap sheet, from when you were 15 years old,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>I was used to that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014they\u2019re never going to let anybody into your house; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This had been how long since you had been locked up on a DUI?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Boy, I have to think here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>About a year-and-a-half later.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Is that all? Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Things change really quickly. You know, Irene was persistent. Sometimes\u2014Irene\u2019s a very emotional lady. Sometimes, she\u2019ll have a whim, one way or the other; and it\u2019ll go away\u2014but this wasn\u2019t going away. So, we said, \u201cWell, let\u2019s pursue it.\u201d I figured it wouldn\u2019t go anywhere\u2014I really did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, when the social worker said, \u201cYou know, we may have a child for you,\u201d what did you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now, it wasn\u2019t just any child\u2014it was a <em>fragile<\/em> child.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Being the logical man that I am, I said: \u201cWell, wait a minute, Irene. Let\u2019s think about this,\u201d\u2014this is all a plot to escape\u2014it was: \u201cLet\u2019s think through\u2014we\u2019re both working\u2026dah, dah, dah.\u201d I said, \u201cWe can take in another child, but we probably couldn\u2019t handle a special-needs child and one that would require a lot of time \/ a lot of care\u2014that kind of stuff. It\u2019s just not going to fit.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI kind of convinced her of that. We agreed that we would take everything but a special-needs child. I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve ever seen the form you can fill out\u2014these forms are worse than buying a house\u2014you have all this information. The only thing we wrote down is\u2014we wanted a baby girl\u2014beyond that\u2014other than we couldn\u2019t have special needs. But we got a call after that. I\u2019ll let Irene tell this story\u2014she likes to tell that part of the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>The funny thing was\u2014the social worker called Domingo first to tell him that they had a little baby girl, who had the possibility of brain damage. He said, \u201cWe have a meeting.\u201d I\u2019m thinking, \u201cThis is really going to happen!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnyway, we go for this meeting. She starts to tell us about this little girl\u2014and she was very ill \/ very sick\u2014failure to thrive. They didn\u2019t think she\u2019d make a year. She said, \u201cI really feel, if I put this baby in your household, you\u2019ll stimulate her \/ you\u2019ll love her and she\u2019ll be fine.\u201d She said, \u201cLet me bring the baby. Meanwhile, you guys go out to breakfast.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we were sitting at the table, Domingo is starting to talk. I\u2019m thinking, \u201cSomething\u2019s wrong.\u201d Well anyway, he bent down to pray for our food. As he was praying, he sat up and he said, \u201cHere I was going to pray, and then it hit me. I committed my life to God. Here God is giving me this gift \/ this child, and I\u2019m ready to figure out a way how I\u2019m going to get out of it. I\u2019m sitting here, thinking, \u2018How can I get out of this gracefully?\u2019\u201d He said, \u201cGod\u2019s giving me this baby\u2014this innocent victim\u2014and I\u2019m saying, \u2018No\u2019?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cIrene, forgive me.\u201d He said, \u201cFrom this day forward, I will do whatever I have to. If this baby can\u2019t walk, can\u2019t talk, can\u2019t eat\u2014I will take this baby. I\u2019ll push her in a wheelchair \/ I\u2019ll do whatever I need to do. Never again will I reject a gift from God like this.\u201d He asked for forgiveness. He prayed, and then we met the baby. That was it\u2014we were in love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Domingo, what did you have for breakfast?\u2014[Laughter]\u2014is what I want to know\u2014because something\u2014I mean, what a remarkable moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>It was just conviction. I went to pray\u2014the words wouldn\u2019t come out. I just realized: \u201cWhat did I just commit to?\u201d I\u2019m sitting here, trying to weasel out of something that God is just giving me, as a gift, and something that my wife really wanted.\u201d It just went contrary to everything that I had committed to\u2014it convicted me. What I realized is: \u201cNo,\u201d\u2014I remember the words\u2014\u201cI will do it.\u201d I said, \u201cI will do this to the end.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is the story we usually hear\u2014where, more than likely, it is the wife and the mom who wants to adopt\u2014and the dad, who\u2019s dragging his heels, feeling a lot of responsibility. I think what you just demonstrated for men is: \u201cAre you going to walk by faith? Are you going to respond to what God\u2019s doing, and are you going to trust Him in the midst of those circumstances?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTell us about Esther.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Well, she was a handful. She was this itty, bitty little thing. She had grand mal seizures. One time, we almost lost her\u2014she stopped breathing, and the ambulance came.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember, on the ride to the hospital, thinking, \u201cLord, why would You give us this baby and now You\u2019re taking her?\u201d because we thought we were losing her\u2014that she was dying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember my husband\u2014he looked at me\u2014he grabbed my hand; and he said: \u201cIrene! We\u2019ve had this baby for 18 months. Instead of saying, \u2018Why are you taking it, Lord?\u2019 we need to say, \u2018Thank you for sharing her.\u2019\u201d I looked at this man\u2014I\u2019m thinking, \u201cThis is the new creature in Christ.\u201d I mean, he had <em>just <\/em>become a Christian. He hadn\u2019t been a Christian very long, and I realized what a man of God I was married to. I realized that he was right\u2014I needed to be thankful. We continued on the quest. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe ended up being okay; but they had drugged her up really badly, and we were having a lot of problems. Her crying kept her from breathing. She\u2019d go into these fits\u2014and in the crying process, she\u2019d quit breathing. In that process, she\u2019d have a grand mal seizure; and she\u2019d fall to the floor. They were horrible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember, one day, just getting on my knees and praying: \u201cLord, what can we do to make a difference? There <em>has<\/em> to be something we can do.\u201d It was then that He said, \u201cTeach her to blow on your finger.\u201d I know that sounds weird; but if I put my finger up and I\u2019d say, \u201cBlow, Esther, blow,\u201d she would look at my finger and she\u2019d start to blow on it. When she\u2019d start to blow on my finger, she\u2019d get her air back, and then she wouldn\u2019t go into the seizure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe longer she could go without having a seizure, the doctors said the better it would be that they would cease\u2014you have to go, I guess, for periods of time\u2014but anyway, we ended up taking her off all meds. We were able to control her seizures by blowing on my finger or our finger. Then, within a year, she no longer had seizures any more. She was mentally delayed; but the grand mal seizures were just adding more to it. So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, I have to tell you\u2014we talked about a bumpy early years of your marriage\u2014and then you make the courageous decision to adopt a special-needs daughter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you\u2019ve just described\u2014if I was in <em>your<\/em> situation, I would say, \u201cI think we\u2019ve done enough.\u201d You know? I would say: \u201cI think we made some sacrifices here. We\u2019re going to take Esther and raise her, but we\u2019re pretty much done.\u201d That\u2019s not what you felt or thought; is it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>No, it wasn\u2019t. Once again, we felt that we needed to help Esther. We ended up thinking that, if we adopted a sibling for her, it would be stimulating for her. So, we decided to go again\u2014and go to the county and ask to adopt another child. Well, it happened really quickly. We were sitting in the room; and the social worker said: \u201cI have a boy that\u2019s six years old, but I also have his brother,\u201d and \u201cWould you consider taking both of them?\u201d Domingo said, \u201cYes, we would.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember thinking, \u201cWe didn\u2019t talk about it! We didn\u2019t talk about it!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m thinking, \u201cLord\u2014one! We said one! Now, I\u2019m thinking, like you are saying, \u2018But I have Esther!\u2019\u201d; you know. All of a sudden my heart was pounding. I thought: \u201cI\u2019m in too deep. Okay, this is far enough. Let\u2019s back up here.\u201d Then I realized that I was wrong\u2014and watching my husband be the example\u2014I thought, \u201cNo, this is what we need to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now, wait a second; because, initially, it was Domingo who was dragging his feet\u2014in fact, he was actually taking his feet and wanting to find a way to escape. [Laughter] <em>Now<\/em>, you\u2019re the one who wants to escape.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Domingo, you\u2019re over here, going, \u201cYes, we\u2019ll take two boys.\u201d What\u2019s going on there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Well, we had seen the difference it makes in an innocent life. Both of our boys, who were now probably ten and twelve, had to sacrifice tremendously\u2014their whole life changed\u2014we took in a special-needs child. But I saw it all for the better\u2014what it was teaching them\u2014because we had so much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod has blessed us with so much that we had, at that point. We said, \u201cWe need to share that.\u201d So, I wanted to continue to do that. I don\u2019t want to hop on the story; but it was great for the boys to see that\u2014to grow up with a special-needs sibling. It really was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So how\u2019d you say, \u201cYes,\u201d Irene?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I said \u201cYes.\u201d Maybe everybody thought I was saying a normal \u201cYes\u201d; but, inside, I was thinking: \u201cI don\u2019t want to do this. I don\u2019t want to do this. I don\u2019t want to do this.\u201d But I knew it was the right thing to do. God had shown me over and over: \u201cYou step out in faith, and you\u2019re going to grow. You step out in faith; you\u2019re going to see Me at work.\u201d And I really liked seeing God at work. So, I decided to close my eyes, hold His hand, and let Him take me where He was going to take me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then this is when we had Joseph and Alfred\u2014they were rambunctious \/ they were difficult\u2014especially Joseph. He was the older one of seven siblings. He wanted to control our house, our family, me. He had every bad habit. Every unimaginable thing that he could do, he would do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you adopt older children, you don\u2019t have those sweet memories. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I always say it\u2019s like credit in the bank. It\u2019s like you have all these sweet memories. Then, as they do these awful things, some memories are taken away; but new ones fill back up. But here\u2014you have everything negative. I\u2019m looking at this boy; and I remember, one day, just crying. I called my husband and I said: \u201cI don\u2019t love this boy. He\u2019s <em>my son<\/em>\u2014we\u2019ve adopted him. I look at him, and I still don\u2019t have the emotion of love. I don\u2019t love him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was feeling so ugly about who I was in Christ because God says we are to love\u2014we are to love. What I wasn\u2019t realizing is\u2014God wants us to love through Him. I couldn\u2019t love in my own strength\u2014it had to be in His strength. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Domingo, being the man of wisdom now\u2014he said: \u201cIrene, you are loving this boy. When you feed him, when you clothe him, when you care for him, when you train him, you\u2019re doing <em>agape l<\/em>ove. That is the love God has called you to do, and you need to pursue that. You\u2019ll see\u2014eventually, that love \/ that <em>agape<\/em> love will turn into emotion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ll see. Trust me. Just keep being obedient. You\u2019ll see that, one day, you\u2019ll love your boy.\u201d And it happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think, when many folks adopt\u2014and I\u2019ve said this many times on the broadcast\u2014our regular listeners know what I\u2019m about to say\u2014we typically think of it as this beautiful photograph of smiling faces, and it\u2019s a story that has just a great ending.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That the rescued kids are going to just go, \u201cThank you so much for the great sacrifice you\u2019ve made to provide for me,\u201d\u2014that they\u2019re going to understand that in some way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. And yet, this story doesn\u2019t have quite that twist. What happened to Joseph?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Well, I was going to camp. I had two daughters\u2014one that could go to camp alone and one that I had to be at camp with because she could cause a ruckus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And how old was Joseph at this time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>He was 13.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, he\u2019d been with you for four years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes; I was on my way to camp. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDomingo had hurt his back\u2014so Domingo was inside the van, waiting for me, as the bus came. My son said, \u201cMom, I\u2019ll take your bags.\u201d So, this little guy came\u2014took my bags\u2014and he walked me to the bus. I looked at him and I remember saying to him: \u201cSon! I am madly in love with you. I have fallen <em>madly<\/em> in love with you! I am so proud to be your mother. You\u2019re flesh of my flesh.\u201d I looked at this charismatic little boy, and he just smiled and glowed. I just remember thinking the words that Domingo had said, \u201cOne day, you\u2019re going to have that emotion.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I was on my way to camp. I said goodbye, I hugged him, and I kissed him all over his face. While I was at camp one night, a camp counselor came up\u2014and came to wake me up and said, \u201cYou have a phone call down below.\u201d I know my husband\u2014and I know my husband would never call me\u2014so I <em>knew<\/em> something had happened. I don\u2019t know why, but I knew something had happened to Joseph. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I was driving down, all of a sudden, we got to the bottom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI saw Domingo and my two boys. They were standing there, and they looked at me. I <em>knew<\/em> Joseph was dead\u2014I just knew it. I remember walking to my husband, and I asked him what happened. He said, \u201cIrene, there was an accident.\u201d He started to tell me that Joseph had strangled and had died that night. I can\u2019t even explain it. You know, all of a sudden, my world just stopped. My knees felt like they were rubber, and I just wanted to die. I let out this sob. I just couldn\u2019t believe: \u201cLord, why did You allow this? Why would You give me this boy, teach me to love him, and now You just take him out of our life?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went home that night. After a few days, I cried and cried. I remember thinking, \u201cI never got to say goodbye to Joseph.\u201d My daughter-in-law said: \u201cMom, you\u2019re the only one that got to say goodbye. You said, \u2018Goodbye, Joseph.\u2019\u201d When I did say goodbye to Joseph, I told him I loved him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it was something that God really brought to my mind that day. He said\u2014when I pleaded, \u201cWhy did You take him?\u201d\u2014and then God said: \u201cIt\u2019s because I needed to show you how to love. I gave you this boy to teach you how to love.\u201d It was through this boy that God taught me that it didn\u2019t matter their habits\u2014it didn\u2019t matter how ugly it seemed\u2014it didn\u2019t matter that I didn\u2019t love him the moment they walked in my door. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll that mattered was I could love them through Christ\u2019s love. His love was pouring\u2014and it pours out, and it pours out. So, it was through <em>His<\/em> love I could love. My love was conditional, but God\u2019s love wasn\u2019t. God showed me: \u201cI gave you this boy, Irene, to show you how I was going to teach you to love.\u201d It was through Joseph and his death that God taught me that it didn\u2019t matter what kind of child came in my house after that\u2014that I would be able to love them through Christ\u2019s love. That was the lesson that God taught me through Joseph.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I listen to your story\u2014and I can\u2019t help but reflect back on how a child, whether it\u2019s your own biological child or your own child through adoption that you choose to bring into your family\u2014a child\u2019s a risk.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s dangerous to love. And yet, I think a part of what God has in mind\u2014over in James, Chapter 1, where He says, \u201cIt\u2019s good to go near the orphan and the widow in their distress,\u201d\u2014because I think, in those moments, we go near the heart of God; and we do learn how to love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know the rest of your story. We don\u2019t have time to finish out telling the rest of your story; but not long after you lost Joseph, you went on to adopt Marie\u2014who, at 12 years of age, had been molested\u2014Felix at the age of 14\u2014and Doreen, who was a little girl who wanted to be a boy. Risk again\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014love again. And it didn\u2019t stop there. Before you guys were done\u2014and this is the amazing thing about the redemption story we\u2019ve heard this week\u2014you two went on, not only to have two biological children of your own, but adopt seventeen children and to be foster care parents to another thirteen. That\u2019s what I call risky love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just have to tell you\u2014it\u2019s a remarkable story of redemption\u2014just to have heard God\u2019s salvation of you, Domingo, and your obedience\u2014\u2014and then to become a man of God, who begins to call his wife up \/ to lead her and to love her\u2014and for you to follow, Irene\u2014and for God to use your family to display God\u2019s love, His grace, His mercy to others. What they didn\u2019t realize was that God\u2019s plans were bigger than their plans were.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>We were sitting in the room. The social worker said, \u201cI have a boy that\u2019s six years old.\u201d She says, \u201cBut I also have his brother,\u201d and \u201cWould you consider taking both of them?\u201d Domingo said, \u201cYes, we would.\u201d I remember thinking: \u201cWe didn\u2019t talk about it! We didn\u2019t talk about it!\u201d I\u2019m thinking, \u201cLord\u2014one! We said one!\u201d All of a sudden, my heart was pounding; and I thought, \u201cI\u2019m in too deep.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, July 7<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. What Irene Garcia didn\u2019t realize, when she thought she was in too deep, was that she was still in the shallow end of the pool God had for her. We\u2019ll hear her story today. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>Thanks for joining us. You know, I have to wonder if couples\u2014who would look at their lives and their marriages and say: \u201cThis has been a bumpy ride. God\u2019s been at work, but we do have a lot of baggage in the past,\u201d\u2014I wonder if those couples would say: \u201cWe need to play it safe, from here on out; because with all the bumps we have had, we have all that we can handle, back in the early years. We just need kind of no turbulence from here to the finish line.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \u201cLet\u2019s just take it easy and coast all the way in.\u201d But the couple we have with us today didn\u2019t coast; in fact, if you\u2019re a listener and you don\u2019t have a seatbelt on, you could be in for a dangerous ride if you don\u2019t have a seatbelt on. [Laughter] Irene and Domingo Garcia join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Domingo\/Irene, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Thank you so much for having us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Irene has written a book called <em>Rich in Love<\/em>. You\u2019re about to hear, in the words of a famous broadcaster, \u201c\u2026the rest of the story.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s 1 Timothy 6\u2014where you pulled the title for the book; right?\u2014where it says \u201cteach those who are wealthy in this world to be rich in love\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right\u2014it\u2019s a great verse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You guys did have a rocky beginning. Your first decade of marriage was, as you describe it, \u201ca mucky, yucky mess.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, there\u2019s alcoholism\u2014you were drinking regularly\u2014right, Domingo?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes sir; I was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There was domestic violence going on. You\u2019d had a couple of kids. Irene, you were trying to plot your way out\u2014figured\u2014if you could save enough money, then just be done with this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you had one of your customers, at the hair salon where you worked\u2014who discipled you\u2014led you to Christ and discipled you. Domingo, you wound up coming to faith after being arrested on a DUI. You guys got into a good solid church\u2014got discipled along the way. Your family changed \/ your marriage changed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the point where I think a lot of couples would say: \u201cI like the smooth road a whole lot better than the bumpy road. Let\u2019s just stay on this kind of smooth, clear highway.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes: \u201cWe have two kids\u2014you know, it\u2019s kind of the perfect family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s the way America kind of views it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So Irene, you apparently like roller-coasters better than you like smooth roads because, at some point in all of this, God put an idea in your heart to expand your family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>He did. Domingo had been gone a lot\u2014so it was usually just me and the boys. I felt empty. Obviously, God was working on my heart. I just thought, \u201cWell, I would really like to adopt,\u201d\u2014I couldn\u2019t have any more kids. So I actually had mentioned it to Mary; and Mary told me, \u201cWell, pray about it, honey.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Mary is the woman who had led you to Christ?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes. Anyway, I had asked Domingo about it\u2014and asked him how he felt about it. He said: \u201cWell, Irene, things are going really well right now. Give it some time\u2014we\u2019ll talk about it later.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you think she was losing her mind, Domingo?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>No, I understood her emptiness; but I just felt we weren\u2019t ready. I felt we had a lot of healing to do yet, and I just didn\u2019t feel ready.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Well, I continued to pray about it. Then, one day, Domingo said: \u201cIrene, you know what? Go ahead and call the county. Go ahead and pursue adoption if you really feel that\u2019s something you want to do.\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cAre you kidding me?\u201d I couldn\u2019t believe it\u2014I was dancing\u2014I was just so excited. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I did. I called the county and got the ball rolling. Then the social worker came\u2014we had a meeting. She shared the story about how there was really a need for kids \/ and Mexican children to be adopted. We\u2019d be put right on the top of the list, and she liked us. So, we started this journey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, Domingo had told me that he didn\u2019t think they were going to give us any kids\u2014so he went along with it. [Laughter] He thought this would pacify me. We\u2019d go through this process and then get to the point and they\u2019d say: \u201cWell, you know what? I\u2019m sorry\u2014you\u2019re not going to get a child.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; hang on. So, when you said, \u201cYes, honey, call the county,\u201d you were thinking, \u201cThis will never happen.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes; I did. I knew my past and our track record. I felt they were just going to reject us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>As soon as they see your rap sheet, from when you were 15 years old,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>I was used to that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014they\u2019re never going to let anybody into your house; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This had been how long since you had been locked up on a DUI?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Boy, I have to think here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>About a year-and-a-half later.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Is that all? Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Things change really quickly. You know, Irene was persistent. Sometimes\u2014Irene\u2019s a very emotional lady. Sometimes, she\u2019ll have a whim, one way or the other; and it\u2019ll go away\u2014but this wasn\u2019t going away. So, we said, \u201cWell, let\u2019s pursue it.\u201d I figured it wouldn\u2019t go anywhere\u2014I really did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, when the social worker said, \u201cYou know, we may have a child for you,\u201d what did you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now, it wasn\u2019t just any child\u2014it was a <em>fragile<\/em> child.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Being the logical man that I am, I said: \u201cWell, wait a minute, Irene. Let\u2019s think about this,\u201d\u2014this is all a plot to escape\u2014it was: \u201cLet\u2019s think through\u2014we\u2019re both working\u2026dah, dah, dah.\u201d I said, \u201cWe can take in another child, but we probably couldn\u2019t handle a special-needs child and one that would require a lot of time \/ a lot of care\u2014that kind of stuff. It\u2019s just not going to fit.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI kind of convinced her of that. We agreed that we would take everything but a special-needs child. I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve ever seen the form you can fill out\u2014these forms are worse than buying a house\u2014you have all this information. The only thing we wrote down is\u2014we wanted a baby girl\u2014beyond that\u2014other than we couldn\u2019t have special needs. But we got a call after that. I\u2019ll let Irene tell this story\u2014she likes to tell that part of the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>The funny thing was\u2014the social worker called Domingo first to tell him that they had a little baby girl, who had the possibility of brain damage. He said, \u201cWe have a meeting.\u201d I\u2019m thinking, \u201cThis is really going to happen!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnyway, we go for this meeting. She starts to tell us about this little girl\u2014and she was very ill \/ very sick\u2014failure to thrive. They didn\u2019t think she\u2019d make a year. She said, \u201cI really feel, if I put this baby in your household, you\u2019ll stimulate her \/ you\u2019ll love her and she\u2019ll be fine.\u201d She said, \u201cLet me bring the baby. Meanwhile, you guys go out to breakfast.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we were sitting at the table, Domingo is starting to talk. I\u2019m thinking, \u201cSomething\u2019s wrong.\u201d Well anyway, he bent down to pray for our food. As he was praying, he sat up and he said, \u201cHere I was going to pray, and then it hit me. I committed my life to God. Here God is giving me this gift \/ this child, and I\u2019m ready to figure out a way how I\u2019m going to get out of it. I\u2019m sitting here, thinking, \u2018How can I get out of this gracefully?\u2019\u201d He said, \u201cGod\u2019s giving me this baby\u2014this innocent victim\u2014and I\u2019m saying, \u2018No\u2019?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cIrene, forgive me.\u201d He said, \u201cFrom this day forward, I will do whatever I have to. If this baby can\u2019t walk, can\u2019t talk, can\u2019t eat\u2014I will take this baby. I\u2019ll push her in a wheelchair \/ I\u2019ll do whatever I need to do. Never again will I reject a gift from God like this.\u201d He asked for forgiveness. He prayed, and then we met the baby. That was it\u2014we were in love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Domingo, what did you have for breakfast?\u2014[Laughter]\u2014is what I want to know\u2014because something\u2014I mean, what a remarkable moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>It was just conviction. I went to pray\u2014the words wouldn\u2019t come out. I just realized: \u201cWhat did I just commit to?\u201d I\u2019m sitting here, trying to weasel out of something that God is just giving me, as a gift, and something that my wife really wanted.\u201d It just went contrary to everything that I had committed to\u2014it convicted me. What I realized is: \u201cNo,\u201d\u2014I remember the words\u2014\u201cI will do it.\u201d I said, \u201cI will do this to the end.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is the story we usually hear\u2014where, more than likely, it is the wife and the mom who wants to adopt\u2014and the dad, who\u2019s dragging his heels, feeling a lot of responsibility. I think what you just demonstrated for men is: \u201cAre you going to walk by faith? Are you going to respond to what God\u2019s doing, and are you going to trust Him in the midst of those circumstances?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTell us about Esther.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Well, she was a handful. She was this itty, bitty little thing. She had grand mal seizures. One time, we almost lost her\u2014she stopped breathing, and the ambulance came.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember, on the ride to the hospital, thinking, \u201cLord, why would You give us this baby and now You\u2019re taking her?\u201d because we thought we were losing her\u2014that she was dying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember my husband\u2014he looked at me\u2014he grabbed my hand; and he said: \u201cIrene! We\u2019ve had this baby for 18 months. Instead of saying, \u2018Why are you taking it, Lord?\u2019 we need to say, \u2018Thank you for sharing her.\u2019\u201d I looked at this man\u2014I\u2019m thinking, \u201cThis is the new creature in Christ.\u201d I mean, he had <em>just <\/em>become a Christian. He hadn\u2019t been a Christian very long, and I realized what a man of God I was married to. I realized that he was right\u2014I needed to be thankful. We continued on the quest. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe ended up being okay; but they had drugged her up really badly, and we were having a lot of problems. Her crying kept her from breathing. She\u2019d go into these fits\u2014and in the crying process, she\u2019d quit breathing. In that process, she\u2019d have a grand mal seizure; and she\u2019d fall to the floor. They were horrible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember, one day, just getting on my knees and praying: \u201cLord, what can we do to make a difference? There <em>has<\/em> to be something we can do.\u201d It was then that He said, \u201cTeach her to blow on your finger.\u201d I know that sounds weird; but if I put my finger up and I\u2019d say, \u201cBlow, Esther, blow,\u201d she would look at my finger and she\u2019d start to blow on it. When she\u2019d start to blow on my finger, she\u2019d get her air back, and then she wouldn\u2019t go into the seizure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe longer she could go without having a seizure, the doctors said the better it would be that they would cease\u2014you have to go, I guess, for periods of time\u2014but anyway, we ended up taking her off all meds. We were able to control her seizures by blowing on my finger or our finger. Then, within a year, she no longer had seizures any more. She was mentally delayed; but the grand mal seizures were just adding more to it. So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, I have to tell you\u2014we talked about a bumpy early years of your marriage\u2014and then you make the courageous decision to adopt a special-needs daughter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you\u2019ve just described\u2014if I was in <em>your<\/em> situation, I would say, \u201cI think we\u2019ve done enough.\u201d You know? I would say: \u201cI think we made some sacrifices here. We\u2019re going to take Esther and raise her, but we\u2019re pretty much done.\u201d That\u2019s not what you felt or thought; is it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>No, it wasn\u2019t. Once again, we felt that we needed to help Esther. We ended up thinking that, if we adopted a sibling for her, it would be stimulating for her. So, we decided to go again\u2014and go to the county and ask to adopt another child. Well, it happened really quickly. We were sitting in the room; and the social worker said: \u201cI have a boy that\u2019s six years old, but I also have his brother,\u201d and \u201cWould you consider taking both of them?\u201d Domingo said, \u201cYes, we would.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember thinking, \u201cWe didn\u2019t talk about it! We didn\u2019t talk about it!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m thinking, \u201cLord\u2014one! We said one! Now, I\u2019m thinking, like you are saying, \u2018But I have Esther!\u2019\u201d; you know. All of a sudden my heart was pounding. I thought: \u201cI\u2019m in too deep. Okay, this is far enough. Let\u2019s back up here.\u201d Then I realized that I was wrong\u2014and watching my husband be the example\u2014I thought, \u201cNo, this is what we need to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now, wait a second; because, initially, it was Domingo who was dragging his feet\u2014in fact, he was actually taking his feet and wanting to find a way to escape. [Laughter] <em>Now<\/em>, you\u2019re the one who wants to escape.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Domingo, you\u2019re over here, going, \u201cYes, we\u2019ll take two boys.\u201d What\u2019s going on there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Well, we had seen the difference it makes in an innocent life. Both of our boys, who were now probably ten and twelve, had to sacrifice tremendously\u2014their whole life changed\u2014we took in a special-needs child. But I saw it all for the better\u2014what it was teaching them\u2014because we had so much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod has blessed us with so much that we had, at that point. We said, \u201cWe need to share that.\u201d So, I wanted to continue to do that. I don\u2019t want to hop on the story; but it was great for the boys to see that\u2014to grow up with a special-needs sibling. It really was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So how\u2019d you say, \u201cYes,\u201d Irene?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I said \u201cYes.\u201d Maybe everybody thought I was saying a normal \u201cYes\u201d; but, inside, I was thinking: \u201cI don\u2019t want to do this. I don\u2019t want to do this. I don\u2019t want to do this.\u201d But I knew it was the right thing to do. God had shown me over and over: \u201cYou step out in faith, and you\u2019re going to grow. You step out in faith; you\u2019re going to see Me at work.\u201d And I really liked seeing God at work. So, I decided to close my eyes, hold His hand, and let Him take me where He was going to take me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then this is when we had Joseph and Alfred\u2014they were rambunctious \/ they were difficult\u2014especially Joseph. He was the older one of seven siblings. He wanted to control our house, our family, me. He had every bad habit. Every unimaginable thing that he could do, he would do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you adopt older children, you don\u2019t have those sweet memories. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I always say it\u2019s like credit in the bank. It\u2019s like you have all these sweet memories. Then, as they do these awful things, some memories are taken away; but new ones fill back up. But here\u2014you have everything negative. I\u2019m looking at this boy; and I remember, one day, just crying. I called my husband and I said: \u201cI don\u2019t love this boy. He\u2019s <em>my son<\/em>\u2014we\u2019ve adopted him. I look at him, and I still don\u2019t have the emotion of love. I don\u2019t love him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was feeling so ugly about who I was in Christ because God says we are to love\u2014we are to love. What I wasn\u2019t realizing is\u2014God wants us to love through Him. I couldn\u2019t love in my own strength\u2014it had to be in His strength. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Domingo, being the man of wisdom now\u2014he said: \u201cIrene, you are loving this boy. When you feed him, when you clothe him, when you care for him, when you train him, you\u2019re doing <em>agape l<\/em>ove. That is the love God has called you to do, and you need to pursue that. You\u2019ll see\u2014eventually, that love \/ that <em>agape<\/em> love will turn into emotion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ll see. Trust me. Just keep being obedient. You\u2019ll see that, one day, you\u2019ll love your boy.\u201d And it happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think, when many folks adopt\u2014and I\u2019ve said this many times on the broadcast\u2014our regular listeners know what I\u2019m about to say\u2014we typically think of it as this beautiful photograph of smiling faces, and it\u2019s a story that has just a great ending.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That the rescued kids are going to just go, \u201cThank you so much for the great sacrifice you\u2019ve made to provide for me,\u201d\u2014that they\u2019re going to understand that in some way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. And yet, this story doesn\u2019t have quite that twist. What happened to Joseph?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Well, I was going to camp. I had two daughters\u2014one that could go to camp alone and one that I had to be at camp with because she could cause a ruckus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And how old was Joseph at this time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>He was 13.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, he\u2019d been with you for four years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes; I was on my way to camp. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDomingo had hurt his back\u2014so Domingo was inside the van, waiting for me, as the bus came. My son said, \u201cMom, I\u2019ll take your bags.\u201d So, this little guy came\u2014took my bags\u2014and he walked me to the bus. I looked at him and I remember saying to him: \u201cSon! I am madly in love with you. I have fallen <em>madly<\/em> in love with you! I am so proud to be your mother. You\u2019re flesh of my flesh.\u201d I looked at this charismatic little boy, and he just smiled and glowed. I just remember thinking the words that Domingo had said, \u201cOne day, you\u2019re going to have that emotion.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I was on my way to camp. I said goodbye, I hugged him, and I kissed him all over his face. While I was at camp one night, a camp counselor came up\u2014and came to wake me up and said, \u201cYou have a phone call down below.\u201d I know my husband\u2014and I know my husband would never call me\u2014so I <em>knew<\/em> something had happened. I don\u2019t know why, but I knew something had happened to Joseph. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I was driving down, all of a sudden, we got to the bottom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI saw Domingo and my two boys. They were standing there, and they looked at me. I <em>knew<\/em> Joseph was dead\u2014I just knew it. I remember walking to my husband, and I asked him what happened. He said, \u201cIrene, there was an accident.\u201d He started to tell me that Joseph had strangled and had died that night. I can\u2019t even explain it. You know, all of a sudden, my world just stopped. My knees felt like they were rubber, and I just wanted to die. I let out this sob. I just couldn\u2019t believe: \u201cLord, why did You allow this? Why would You give me this boy, teach me to love him, and now You just take him out of our life?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went home that night. After a few days, I cried and cried. I remember thinking, \u201cI never got to say goodbye to Joseph.\u201d My daughter-in-law said: \u201cMom, you\u2019re the only one that got to say goodbye. You said, \u2018Goodbye, Joseph.\u2019\u201d When I did say goodbye to Joseph, I told him I loved him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it was something that God really brought to my mind that day. He said\u2014when I pleaded, \u201cWhy did You take him?\u201d\u2014and then God said: \u201cIt\u2019s because I needed to show you how to love. I gave you this boy to teach you how to love.\u201d It was through this boy that God taught me that it didn\u2019t matter their habits\u2014it didn\u2019t matter how ugly it seemed\u2014it didn\u2019t matter that I didn\u2019t love him the moment they walked in my door. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll that mattered was I could love them through Christ\u2019s love. His love was pouring\u2014and it pours out, and it pours out. So, it was through <em>His<\/em> love I could love. My love was conditional, but God\u2019s love wasn\u2019t. God showed me: \u201cI gave you this boy, Irene, to show you how I was going to teach you to love.\u201d It was through Joseph and his death that God taught me that it didn\u2019t matter what kind of child came in my house after that\u2014that I would be able to love them through Christ\u2019s love. That was the lesson that God taught me through Joseph.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I listen to your story\u2014and I can\u2019t help but reflect back on how a child, whether it\u2019s your own biological child or your own child through adoption that you choose to bring into your family\u2014a child\u2019s a risk.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s dangerous to love. And yet, I think a part of what God has in mind\u2014over in James, Chapter 1, where He says, \u201cIt\u2019s good to go near the orphan and the widow in their distress,\u201d\u2014because I think, in those moments, we go near the heart of God; and we do learn how to love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know the rest of your story. We don\u2019t have time to finish out telling the rest of your story; but not long after you lost Joseph, you went on to adopt Marie\u2014who, at 12 years of age, had been molested\u2014Felix at the age of 14\u2014and Doreen, who was a little girl who wanted to be a boy. Risk again\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014love again. And it didn\u2019t stop there. Before you guys were done\u2014and this is the amazing thing about the redemption story we\u2019ve heard this week\u2014you two went on, not only to have two biological children of your own, but adopt seventeen children and to be foster care parents to another thirteen. That\u2019s what I call risky love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just have to tell you\u2014it\u2019s a remarkable story of redemption\u2014just to have heard God\u2019s salvation of you, Domingo, and your obedience\u2014\u2014and then to become a man of God, who begins to call his wife up \/ to lead her and to love her\u2014and for you to follow, Irene\u2014and for God to use your family to display God\u2019s love, His grace, His mercy to others.
