It was a marriage that did not begin well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>It was the second day after we were married. They were planning this reception for us with Domingo\u2019s family. People came into the house that weren\u2019t family, and I saw a look of change in Domingo. Domingo said: \u201cIrene, I need to talk to you. You need to go to the room. I don\u2019t want you to come out. You need to stay in the room. I want you to stay in the room the rest of the evening.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy only thought was: \u201cWhy?! What do you mean I can\u2019t go out?\u00a0 This is a reception for us!\u201d\u00a0 And then, the next thing I remember is just his fist across my face\u2014but I was 16 [emotion in voice]. Nobody had ever said to me what marriage was supposed to be like. So, I thought this was part of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, July 6<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine. We\u2019ll hear today about God\u2019s transforming work in the lives of Irene and Domingo Garcia. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. If I were to sit down with a young couple and hear their story\u2014that they\u2019d got married when they were both 16 years old, pregnant\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014that, early in their marriage, there was abuse\u2014the husband was abusing the wife\u2014they didn\u2019t have a whole lot of hope for their marriage\u2014what kind of odds would you give that marriage?\u00a0 Or for that matter, what hope would you point that couple to?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you know the percentages don\u2019t matter because God is the God of the power that works best in a graveyard\u2014where things are dead and need to be brought alive. And that\u2019s the story of Domingo and Irene Garcia, who join us again with their story, here, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Irene\/Domingo, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Thank you very much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Irene: <\/strong>Thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It really was a mess that you were in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>We were in a mess!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you write about it in your book, <em>Rich in Love<\/em>, which, interestingly, is subtitled: <em>When God Rescues Messy People<\/em>. I might say, \u201c\u2026in messy circumstances.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And really, the first decade of your marriage was a messy\u2014just a messy season; wasn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>It was very messy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>There was a point in that first ten-year period where something pivotal happened in your life, Irene. It was one of your clients\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014who\u2014you\u2019re a hairdresser; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes; I am. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, you\u2019re cutting hair with somebody. She\u2019s just asking: \u201cHow is your marriage? How are your kids?\u201d\u2014that kind of stuff?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>She was a client of mine. There was a group of women that would come in; and they all were going to Grace Community Church, back then. They would come in, and they all would talk about Jesus. I\u2019d like to tell you that they all had these great walks, but they all didn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe one particular woman who did\u2014her name was Mary Barshaw. She came and sat in my chair, and she just loved on me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe just took me under her wing, and I saw something different\u2014she had peace \/ she had joy. She had a wonderful family, and I wanted that. She was loved by her husband and respected, and I wanted that. But I used to tell her things\u2014just to shake her boots. I used to say things to her just to see how she\u2019d respond. She\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Things like what?\u00a0 What would you say?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Well, I probably shouldn\u2019t be able to say them on this media. They weren\u2019t very nice things\u2014just some things that we were doing and things that were not proper\u2014things that I would say to my husband that weren\u2019t good or things about my husband that weren\u2019t good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis godly woman\u2014she\u2019d just say, \u201cOkay, honey; but this is what God says.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019d think, \u201cWell, what does God say about this?\u201d\u00a0 I would just drill her, and drill her, and drill her. She would just come back with godly remarks and Scripture. She would say: \u201cThat\u2019s okay, honey. You know, you need to love him.\u201d I\u2019m thinking: \u201cYou don\u2019t know, lady. You come from your <em>Kumbaya<\/em> world. You have <em>no<\/em> idea what it\u2019s really like.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, anyway, as time went on, she would invite me to her house. I\u2014we had two kids by then. She would invite me. I\u2019d say, \u201cOkay\u201d; and then, I\u2019d back out at the last minute. Well, one particular time, I thought, \u201cI need to be right, and I need to go to her house.\u201d I went to lunch. The funny thing was her husband was there. I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWhat is this man doing, here, in the middle of the day?\u201d\u00a0 Well, it was a plan!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had lunch with him. She ended up getting up from the table, and he started to talk to me. He just, point blank, said: \u201cAre you a Christian?\u00a0 Do you have a relationship with Jesus?\u201d\u00a0 He, point blank, confronted me on the gospel message. I remember he said: \u201cDo you <em>want<\/em> to know Jesus?\u00a0 Do you <em>want<\/em> to become a Christian?\u00a0 Do you <em>want<\/em> to follow Him?\u00a0 Do you want to give up your life and follow Him?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYes; I do.\u201d\u00a0 I knew I wanted what they had. So, he said, \u201cOkay; pray this prayer with me.\u201d\u00a0 He bowed down, and he prayed. Everything that he said I accepted, and I prayed with him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe only thing was\u2014I didn\u2019t tell him. So, he didn\u2019t know that I had accepted Christ that day. I\u2014then, later, I thought, \u201cWhere is Mary?\u201d\u00a0 Well, she had to have been in the kitchen praying\u2014she had to be. Well, anyway, I ended up leaving their house and thanking them. I ended up moving salons\u2014so, I didn\u2019t see her anymore. So, she didn\u2019t know I had come to know the Lord. Then, one day, I went to church. I realized that I had come to know the Lord\u2014that I had made a profession of faith. So, I called her\u2014I said, \u201cI need your help, Mary. I will do your hair every week if you come in and teach me about God. In return, I will do your hair.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, she would have come in anyway, but I didn\u2019t know that. So, she came in\u2014this woman discipled me over 25 years. It was, then, that I said, \u201cDid you know that I prayed that prayer?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cNo, honey; I never knew.\u201d\u00a0 Well, then, when she found out I was a Christian\u2014she started talking to me, and teaching me, and sharing the gospel with me, and sharing Scripture with me, and just\u2014she was that Titus 2 woman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Domingo, did you have any idea that this discipleship was going on or that there had been a spiritual change in your wife\u2019s life?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes. She had mentioned that she was meeting somebody and talking to somebody, but I had no interest in it. I was going on about my own life, at that point. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Were you seeing any difference in her?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes; I had started to see some changes in her, where she\u2014I could see she was trying to control \/ to stay her tongue\u2014where she would just lash out continuously at me with different things\u2014and just a calmness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, she was constantly reading different books\u2014and even trying to read them to me and trying to get my interest in salvation and things that were going on. And so, seeds were being planted in my life, at that point. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019d been married now for nine years. What condition was your marriage in?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Irene: <\/strong>A wreck!\u00a0 I was already making plans\u2014I was saving money, and I was on my way out. I was pretty much on my way out. We\u2019d gotten to the point that our relationship was so caustic, and my children were watching it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, one night, it was really a bad night\u2014when Domingo\u2019s leg just broke, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, wait. How\u2019d that happen?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Well, he had come home from drinking. It was going to be one of those really bad evenings. I always knew when it would happen. He walked into the room, and I was pretending to be asleep. He walked in, and he was pretty wasted. He said, \u201cIrene, what are you doing?\u201d\u00a0 He started to kind of badger me a bit. I just remember sitting up and looking at him, and I just spewed the most vile things to him\u2014I just lost all control. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I remember looking at his face. It was like it was somebody else. I remember thinking: \u201cOh, dear God, please save me tonight. I\u2019m going to die,\u201d because he had that look. And he, all of a sudden, just turned his body. He was going to come at me; and all of a sudden, he fell to the ground. I heard this crack; and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cHis leg just broke.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019m thinking, \u201cNo way!\u201d\u00a0 But it did. He fell and went to sleep on the floor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next morning, he said, \u201cIrene, I think my leg is broken.\u201d\u00a0 I just said, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t care,\u201d and I walked out to go to work. I got the keys to his car and moved them because his car was blocking mine. Just to be spiteful, I parked it <em>way <\/em>down the street so that he would have to walk all the way over there. So, he had to have my two boys hold him up and take him to his car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe went to the doctor, and he had broken his leg in three places\u2014the fibula and the tibia\u2014I mean, right in half\u2014it was broken. Both of us just kind of took that day out of our minds. We never thought about it again until many years later\u2014we thought, \u201cGod broke your leg!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your marriage was, for all practical purposes, done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes; it was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>At that point, Domingo, God did something to get your attention in a big-time way when you were arrested for a DUI. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes; He did. That was one of several DUI\u2019s; yes. I---along with being an alcoholic, I was a workaholic. So, I worked a lot\u2014I never sat still. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was just going 24\/7. And for me, to be put in jail for a week was like an eternity. Through that process of every day\u2014God humbled me to the point that I realized, \u201cWhy did I really, really drink?\u201d\u00a0 I realized why an older brother and a little sister both drank themselves to death\u2014and having to do with a lot of their childhood. I realized that I was trying to forget my childhood and the things that happened to me\u2014for the fact that my dad was never there and all the things that my family suffered without. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I realized those <em>exact<\/em> things were the things I was doing to my children. I had two boys at home and that they were probably going to do it to their kids. I envisioned this endless downward spiral from generation to generation\u2014just: \u201cSomebody\u2019s got to stop this.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s at the point where I said, \u201cI need help.\u201d\u00a0 And back again\u2014reviewing everything I knew about God\u2014I attempted to pray to the best of my ability \/ the knowledge that I had of the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was more of a bargaining; but I said, \u201cYou restore my family and take the desire of drink away from me, I will follow You\u2014whatever that means. I know I don\u2019t know what it means, but whatever it means I will do it. I will do that.\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s what happened. No sooner than I finished that than my name came over the PA\u2014I was released. Things totally changed after that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You went home to pursue Irene instead of to abuse her. You went after her heart, at that point. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes, sir; I did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Irene, what did you think about that?\u00a0 Here is your husband, coming out of jail. He\u2019s coming after you to love you, as best he knew how, then. Yet, you\u2019re feeling horribly unsafe, unprotected, hurt, wounded\u2014probably, very distrustful of him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>How did I feel?\u00a0 Mad at God. I\u2019d already come to know the Lord, and a godly woman was discipling me. I remember she said, \u201cIrene, you have to be quiet, and you have to win your husband over.\u201d\u00a0 We were going through 1 Peter 3:1-4. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe kept saying: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 He\u2019s not a believer, but you still have to love him. And you have to do the things that God has called you to do.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, for ten years, I was planning my way of escape. I was going to leave. I was right there. I had already talked to a lawyer\u2014I mean\u2014I was done. I really\u2014my heart was done, and I had made a decision that I was not going to forgive him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Well, I was at work; and I got a call. He was on the other line\u2014he said, \u201cI just want you to know I\u2019m never going to drink again.\u201d I remember thinking, \u201cYes; right!\u201d\u00a0 But then, there was something gnawing at me. He said, \u201cIrene,\u201d\u2014he said, \u201cI need you to forgive me.\u201d\u00a0 And I didn\u2019t want to forgive him. I was so busy looking at his sin when I first became a Christian\u2014that my sin looked pretty good. I wasn\u2019t focused on the cross, but I was focused on him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI realized that this was the crossroads of my walk with God. I needed to trust God and forgive him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was really funny because he said to me: \u201cIrene, I\u2019ve just given you the ten worst years of my life. Would you like me to give my best years to someone else?\u00a0 I feel like you deserve them.\u201d\u00a0 That kind of struck a nerve down me. I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWhat do you mean somebody else?!\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>Well, anyway, I got off the phone. I went to go do my client, who happened to be the lady who had been discipling me\u2014and she was a godly, Christian woman. She said, \u201cIrene, you have to forgive your husband.\u201d\u00a0 I remember saying: \u201cI\u2019m not going to forgive him!\u00a0 I don\u2019t have to forgive him.\u201d\u00a0 She said: \u201cHoney, yes, you do have to forgive him. You\u2019re a Christian, and he\u2019s asking you for forgiveness.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Well, anyway, as I drove home that day, I was really mad. I used to pray that God would just take him\u2014have him drive off the cliff or whatever it would be\u2014but just take him and give me a new husband that I thought I deserved. And God did. You know, He ended up changing Domingo. I thank God for the Spirit who mediates our prayer. As I was praying, \u201cGod take my husband,\u201d I believe by the time those prayers reached God\u2019s ears, it was: \u201cChange this man. Make him a new creature.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, as I was driving home, it was like I was wrestling with Jesus. He said, \u201cYou will forgive.\u201d\u00a0 And I was battling. I realized: \u201cYou\u2019re right. You stretched out your arms for me, Lord. And you stretched them out for him too. And if I want to walk Your walk, I have to forgive.\u201d\u00a0 And so, I did\u2014I forgave. On the way home, I remember praying\u2014I said, \u201cI will forgive him.\u201d\u00a0 And then, we spoke; and I did forgive Domingo. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI asked God\u2014I got on my knees\u2014and asked God to forgive me because my view of Christianity was really skewed. I thought my sin was not as bad as his sin. So, that day, I forgave him and decided to trust God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And something remarkable happened in your heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>It was changed. I felt\u2014well, I didn\u2019t fall in love with him right away. I forgave him; but then, I continued to pray, \u201cLord, I don\u2019t love this man.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, I hated my husband. I feel embarrassed to say that, but I did. I hated him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd even though I forgave him, I still didn\u2019t have that love for him. But I just started praying, \u201cLord, if You would just show me how to love my husband and if you would just teach me to love my husband\u2026\u201d About a year later, I remember sitting across the table\u2014I looked at this man, and I realized I had fallen madly in love with him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>The funny thing is\u2014Domingo shares his testimony a lot. He always says, \u201cWhen my wife could keep her mouth shut, I knew there had to be a God.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter] You know, that\u2019s really kind of funny; but I would use my words as my weapons. You know, Domingo was strong; and I couldn\u2019t match him physically. So, I thought, \u201cWhen he\u2019s sober, I\u2019m going to let him have it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut He did\u2014He taught me to forgive him. Then, about a year later, He put that love inside of me. And it gets better, and better, and better. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There is hope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Irene: <\/strong>There is <em>so much hope<\/em>. If God can come in and fix <em>our<\/em> mess\u2014because we were in the muck \/ we were two ugly creatures\u2014if God could come in and fix <em>our<\/em> mess\u2014because it was a mess \/ it was yucky \/ it was awful\u2014He can fix anybody\u2019s mess.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Domingo, this wasn\u2019t an overnight transformation\u2014I don\u2019t imagine. It\u2019s not like, all of a sudden, everything was fine at home. You guys had some patterns that had to be unlearned and had some spiritual growth that had to happen in both of your lives; didn\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes, sir; very much, sir. I mean, I believe that salvation is instantaneous, positionally, but the practical part takes time. It takes a lot of healing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI felt I\u2019d made a mess of my 20-some years that I was in control. It was time to give God the control. I realize that, in Him\u2014He did take away my desire to drink\u2014it just stopped. I say I had no more desire to drink whatsoever. It was gone completely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut yet, I knew I had a responsibility, from there on, to find out what it meant to follow God. I had no clue what that meant. So, I started to give up my\u2014changing my calendar around and started to go to church to learn what that meant \/ what was expected of me. I didn\u2019t know what was expected of me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I learned things \/ as I started reading and going through the Bible and everything\u2014just one step at a time\u2014started changing, started changing, started changing. And my boys loved it. By no time, they were just following me. They had had a void for a dad anyway. We were out, doing all kinds of great things. We were\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt work\u2014I used to work\u2014I remember, prior to my salvation, I was working, day and night sometimes. I would\u2014I think, one year, I was gone 48 weekends out of the year\u2014just traveling and different things. So, I said, \u201cOkay; I need to be home.\u201d\u00a0 So, I went, and I said: \u201cHey, I can only work 40 hours a week. If that\u2019s not good enough for you, that\u2019s fine\u2014I\u2019ll leave. I\u2019ll drop the career \/ change everything.\u201d\u00a0 He said: \u201cNo; we\u2019ll take what we can get. If 40 hours is all you can give us, that\u2019s what we\u2019ll take.\u201d\u00a0 So, that drastically changed. I was home at 5:30 every day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What did you do with Irene?\u00a0 You went after her heart to love her. Explain how different you were with her after your conversion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>I realized my responsibility to make her number two in my life\u2014should I say, after Christ\u2014and started cultivating the relationship, pursuing her, doing\u2014the Bible says you have to earn trust. I knew she no longer trusted me. And I had to do things to earn that. So, everything I said\u2014I made sure that I did \/ that I would do\u2014whether it be home at 5:30, whether it be doing this\u2014the promises made and everything we did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we built some great memories. We had so much\u2014ten years of a disastrous marriage\u2014that I had \/ I felt like we needed to build some fond memories. So, we went out\u2014and I remember we bought a camping conversion van, and a boat, and motorcycles. We just went out and played for a year and did all kinds of fun\u2014spent time together, just every weekend, and doing all these neat things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Irene, he said that he noticed the ability for you to control your tongue. [Laughter] What did you notice about him that struck you as he began to pursue Christ?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I think what I <em>loved<\/em> about him was watching how passionate he was becoming for his love for God\u2014I mean\u2014he did a 180. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo this day, I\u2019ve never met anybody who was walking one way and turned around <em>completely<\/em> and walked the other way. He was becoming a man of God\u2014he was studying the Word, and he was growing. He started to woo me\u2014I guess you could say\u2014and he started doing things. He started to cherish who I was, and I was valuable to him. And to be loved and to love is an amazing thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe changed <em>so much<\/em> that I knew God was in his life, and I <em>knew<\/em> God had His hand on him. So, I knew that, if I held onto his hand\u2014that he was holding onto God\u2019s hand\u2014we were going to go in the right direction. So, I surrendered. That was tough because I don\u2019t surrender easily, but I knew that God had given me this man. He was a new creature, and I was going to do everything to fall in love with him that I could do. God filled me with that desire, but I had to also do my part. He wooed, and he won; because I\u2019m still madly in love with him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did it take ten years?\u2014because he talks about ten years of a bad marriage, and now, he has to repair the years that the locusts had eaten. How long before you were looking at him and going, \u201cGod gave me a new husband\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Well, you know, when he started to change\u2014it happened so quickly that he did these big changes\u2014like he stopped drinking. So, it wasn\u2019t really that difficult because he was like two people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen he was drinking, he was ugly; but when he was sober, he was beautiful. And so, they were so extreme. So, it wasn\u2019t hard because I knew that side of him\u2014there was that side of him. We never talked about it, but there was that beautiful side of him. And he was an <em>amazing<\/em> dad. He <em>never<\/em> hurt my kids. He was <em>such<\/em> a good dad. So, when I saw that he was <em>trying<\/em> and God was working in him, I knew that he\u2014God was taking him on a journey. I didn\u2019t want to get left behind\u2014is the bottom line!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, this is a love story that doesn\u2019t end here. Truthfully, Bob started today\u2019s broadcast by asking me a question, \u201cWhat kind of chance would you give a couple who were married at 16\u2014had to get married\u2014there was abuse\u2014emotional\/physical\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cno pattern for how to survive a marriage.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No; but if you asked me, Bob, \u201cWhat would you think of that couple, who started out that way\u2014went on to become parents and foster care parents of 32 children?\u201d\u00a0 I would say, \u201cApart from God\u2014no chance.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019d say, \u201cWe ought to get them on the radio,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s what you\u2019d say. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019d say, \u201cI want to tell that story!\u201d [Laughter] And there is more to this story; but what I want the listener to hear: \u201cRegardless of your circumstances, regardless of your track record, regardless of your spouse\u2019s track record, there is a God. He cares about you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes; He does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cHe <em>does<\/em> show up in peoples\u2019 lives, continuously. He\u2019s there\u2014He is at work. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to trust Him; and you need to be a part of a growing, Christian community\u2014a church that\u2019s supports you \/ that\u2019s discipling you so you know how to respond to these circumstances; but you need to hang in there and not quit.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; I think that one way couples receive hope to go the distance is by hearing stories like the story we\u2019re hearing this week from Irene and Domingo Garcia. If I were to sit down with a young couple and hear their story\u2014that they\u2019d got married when they were both 16 years old, pregnant\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014that, early in their marriage, there was abuse\u2014the husband was abusing the wife\u2014they didn\u2019t have a whole lot of hope for their marriage\u2014what kind of odds would you give that marriage?\u00a0 Or for that matter, what hope would you point that couple to?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you know the percentages don\u2019t matter because God is the God of the power that works best in a graveyard\u2014where things are dead and need to be brought alive. And that\u2019s the story of Domingo and Irene Garcia, who join us again with their story, here, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Irene\/Domingo, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Thank you very much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Irene: <\/strong>Thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It really was a mess that you were in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>We were in a mess!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you write about it in your book, <em>Rich in Love<\/em>, which, interestingly, is subtitled: <em>When God Rescues Messy People<\/em>. I might say, \u201c\u2026in messy circumstances.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And really, the first decade of your marriage was a messy\u2014just a messy season; wasn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>It was very messy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>There was a point in that first ten-year period where something pivotal happened in your life, Irene. It was one of your clients\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014who\u2014you\u2019re a hairdresser; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes; I am. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, you\u2019re cutting hair with somebody. She\u2019s just asking: \u201cHow is your marriage? How are your kids?\u201d\u2014that kind of stuff?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>She was a client of mine. There was a group of women that would come in; and they all were going to Grace Community Church, back then. They would come in, and they all would talk about Jesus. I\u2019d like to tell you that they all had these great walks, but they all didn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe one particular woman who did\u2014her name was Mary Barshaw. She came and sat in my chair, and she just loved on me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe just took me under her wing, and I saw something different\u2014she had peace \/ she had joy. She had a wonderful family, and I wanted that. She was loved by her husband and respected, and I wanted that. But I used to tell her things\u2014just to shake her boots. I used to say things to her just to see how she\u2019d respond. She\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Things like what?\u00a0 What would you say?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Well, I probably shouldn\u2019t be able to say them on this media. They weren\u2019t very nice things\u2014just some things that we were doing and things that were not proper\u2014things that I would say to my husband that weren\u2019t good or things about my husband that weren\u2019t good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis godly woman\u2014she\u2019d just say, \u201cOkay, honey; but this is what God says.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019d think, \u201cWell, what does God say about this?\u201d\u00a0 I would just drill her, and drill her, and drill her. She would just come back with godly remarks and Scripture. She would say: \u201cThat\u2019s okay, honey. You know, you need to love him.\u201d I\u2019m thinking: \u201cYou don\u2019t know, lady. You come from your <em>Kumbaya<\/em> world. You have <em>no<\/em> idea what it\u2019s really like.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, anyway, as time went on, she would invite me to her house. I\u2014we had two kids by then. She would invite me. I\u2019d say, \u201cOkay\u201d; and then, I\u2019d back out at the last minute. Well, one particular time, I thought, \u201cI need to be right, and I need to go to her house.\u201d I went to lunch. The funny thing was her husband was there. I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWhat is this man doing, here, in the middle of the day?\u201d\u00a0 Well, it was a plan!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had lunch with him. She ended up getting up from the table, and he started to talk to me. He just, point blank, said: \u201cAre you a Christian?\u00a0 Do you have a relationship with Jesus?\u201d\u00a0 He, point blank, confronted me on the gospel message. I remember he said: \u201cDo you <em>want<\/em> to know Jesus?\u00a0 Do you <em>want<\/em> to become a Christian?\u00a0 Do you <em>want<\/em> to follow Him?\u00a0 Do you want to give up your life and follow Him?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYes; I do.\u201d\u00a0 I knew I wanted what they had. So, he said, \u201cOkay; pray this prayer with me.\u201d\u00a0 He bowed down, and he prayed. Everything that he said I accepted, and I prayed with him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe only thing was\u2014I didn\u2019t tell him. So, he didn\u2019t know that I had accepted Christ that day. I\u2014then, later, I thought, \u201cWhere is Mary?\u201d\u00a0 Well, she had to have been in the kitchen praying\u2014she had to be. Well, anyway, I ended up leaving their house and thanking them. I ended up moving salons\u2014so, I didn\u2019t see her anymore. So, she didn\u2019t know I had come to know the Lord. Then, one day, I went to church. I realized that I had come to know the Lord\u2014that I had made a profession of faith. So, I called her\u2014I said, \u201cI need your help, Mary. I will do your hair every week if you come in and teach me about God. In return, I will do your hair.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, she would have come in anyway, but I didn\u2019t know that. So, she came in\u2014this woman discipled me over 25 years. It was, then, that I said, \u201cDid you know that I prayed that prayer?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cNo, honey; I never knew.\u201d\u00a0 Well, then, when she found out I was a Christian\u2014she started talking to me, and teaching me, and sharing the gospel with me, and sharing Scripture with me, and just\u2014she was that Titus 2 woman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Domingo, did you have any idea that this discipleship was going on or that there had been a spiritual change in your wife\u2019s life?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes. She had mentioned that she was meeting somebody and talking to somebody, but I had no interest in it. I was going on about my own life, at that point. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Were you seeing any difference in her?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes; I had started to see some changes in her, where she\u2014I could see she was trying to control \/ to stay her tongue\u2014where she would just lash out continuously at me with different things\u2014and just a calmness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, she was constantly reading different books\u2014and even trying to read them to me and trying to get my interest in salvation and things that were going on. And so, seeds were being planted in my life, at that point. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019d been married now for nine years. What condition was your marriage in?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Irene: <\/strong>A wreck!\u00a0 I was already making plans\u2014I was saving money, and I was on my way out. I was pretty much on my way out. We\u2019d gotten to the point that our relationship was so caustic, and my children were watching it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, one night, it was really a bad night\u2014when Domingo\u2019s leg just broke, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, wait. How\u2019d that happen?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Well, he had come home from drinking. It was going to be one of those really bad evenings. I always knew when it would happen. He walked into the room, and I was pretending to be asleep. He walked in, and he was pretty wasted. He said, \u201cIrene, what are you doing?\u201d\u00a0 He started to kind of badger me a bit. I just remember sitting up and looking at him, and I just spewed the most vile things to him\u2014I just lost all control. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I remember looking at his face. It was like it was somebody else. I remember thinking: \u201cOh, dear God, please save me tonight. I\u2019m going to die,\u201d because he had that look. And he, all of a sudden, just turned his body. He was going to come at me; and all of a sudden, he fell to the ground. I heard this crack; and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cHis leg just broke.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019m thinking, \u201cNo way!\u201d\u00a0 But it did. He fell and went to sleep on the floor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next morning, he said, \u201cIrene, I think my leg is broken.\u201d\u00a0 I just said, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t care,\u201d and I walked out to go to work. I got the keys to his car and moved them because his car was blocking mine. Just to be spiteful, I parked it <em>way <\/em>down the street so that he would have to walk all the way over there. So, he had to have my two boys hold him up and take him to his car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe went to the doctor, and he had broken his leg in three places\u2014the fibula and the tibia\u2014I mean, right in half\u2014it was broken. Both of us just kind of took that day out of our minds. We never thought about it again until many years later\u2014we thought, \u201cGod broke your leg!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your marriage was, for all practical purposes, done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes; it was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>At that point, Domingo, God did something to get your attention in a big-time way when you were arrested for a DUI. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes; He did. That was one of several DUI\u2019s; yes. I---along with being an alcoholic, I was a workaholic. So, I worked a lot\u2014I never sat still. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was just going 24\/7. And for me, to be put in jail for a week was like an eternity. Through that process of every day\u2014God humbled me to the point that I realized, \u201cWhy did I really, really drink?\u201d\u00a0 I realized why an older brother and a little sister both drank themselves to death\u2014and having to do with a lot of their childhood. I realized that I was trying to forget my childhood and the things that happened to me\u2014for the fact that my dad was never there and all the things that my family suffered without. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I realized those <em>exact<\/em> things were the things I was doing to my children. I had two boys at home and that they were probably going to do it to their kids. I envisioned this endless downward spiral from generation to generation\u2014just: \u201cSomebody\u2019s got to stop this.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s at the point where I said, \u201cI need help.\u201d\u00a0 And back again\u2014reviewing everything I knew about God\u2014I attempted to pray to the best of my ability \/ the knowledge that I had of the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was more of a bargaining; but I said, \u201cYou restore my family and take the desire of drink away from me, I will follow You\u2014whatever that means. I know I don\u2019t know what it means, but whatever it means I will do it. I will do that.\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s what happened. No sooner than I finished that than my name came over the PA\u2014I was released. Things totally changed after that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You went home to pursue Irene instead of to abuse her. You went after her heart, at that point. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes, sir; I did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Irene, what did you think about that?\u00a0 Here is your husband, coming out of jail. He\u2019s coming after you to love you, as best he knew how, then. Yet, you\u2019re feeling horribly unsafe, unprotected, hurt, wounded\u2014probably, very distrustful of him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>How did I feel?\u00a0 Mad at God. I\u2019d already come to know the Lord, and a godly woman was discipling me. I remember she said, \u201cIrene, you have to be quiet, and you have to win your husband over.\u201d\u00a0 We were going through 1 Peter 3:1-4. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe kept saying: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 He\u2019s not a believer, but you still have to love him. And you have to do the things that God has called you to do.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, for ten years, I was planning my way of escape. I was going to leave. I was right there. I had already talked to a lawyer\u2014I mean\u2014I was done. I really\u2014my heart was done, and I had made a decision that I was not going to forgive him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Well, I was at work; and I got a call. He was on the other line\u2014he said, \u201cI just want you to know I\u2019m never going to drink again.\u201d I remember thinking, \u201cYes; right!\u201d\u00a0 But then, there was something gnawing at me. He said, \u201cIrene,\u201d\u2014he said, \u201cI need you to forgive me.\u201d\u00a0 And I didn\u2019t want to forgive him. I was so busy looking at his sin when I first became a Christian\u2014that my sin looked pretty good. I wasn\u2019t focused on the cross, but I was focused on him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI realized that this was the crossroads of my walk with God. I needed to trust God and forgive him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was really funny because he said to me: \u201cIrene, I\u2019ve just given you the ten worst years of my life. Would you like me to give my best years to someone else?\u00a0 I feel like you deserve them.\u201d\u00a0 That kind of struck a nerve down me. I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWhat do you mean somebody else?!\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>Well, anyway, I got off the phone. I went to go do my client, who happened to be the lady who had been discipling me\u2014and she was a godly, Christian woman. She said, \u201cIrene, you have to forgive your husband.\u201d\u00a0 I remember saying: \u201cI\u2019m not going to forgive him!\u00a0 I don\u2019t have to forgive him.\u201d\u00a0 She said: \u201cHoney, yes, you do have to forgive him. You\u2019re a Christian, and he\u2019s asking you for forgiveness.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Well, anyway, as I drove home that day, I was really mad. I used to pray that God would just take him\u2014have him drive off the cliff or whatever it would be\u2014but just take him and give me a new husband that I thought I deserved. And God did. You know, He ended up changing Domingo. I thank God for the Spirit who mediates our prayer. As I was praying, \u201cGod take my husband,\u201d I believe by the time those prayers reached God\u2019s ears, it was: \u201cChange this man. Make him a new creature.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, as I was driving home, it was like I was wrestling with Jesus. He said, \u201cYou will forgive.\u201d\u00a0 And I was battling. I realized: \u201cYou\u2019re right. You stretched out your arms for me, Lord. And you stretched them out for him too. And if I want to walk Your walk, I have to forgive.\u201d\u00a0 And so, I did\u2014I forgave. On the way home, I remember praying\u2014I said, \u201cI will forgive him.\u201d\u00a0 And then, we spoke; and I did forgive Domingo. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI asked God\u2014I got on my knees\u2014and asked God to forgive me because my view of Christianity was really skewed. I thought my sin was not as bad as his sin. So, that day, I forgave him and decided to trust God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And something remarkable happened in your heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>It was changed. I felt\u2014well, I didn\u2019t fall in love with him right away. I forgave him; but then, I continued to pray, \u201cLord, I don\u2019t love this man.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, I hated my husband. I feel embarrassed to say that, but I did. I hated him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd even though I forgave him, I still didn\u2019t have that love for him. But I just started praying, \u201cLord, if You would just show me how to love my husband and if you would just teach me to love my husband\u2026\u201d About a year later, I remember sitting across the table\u2014I looked at this man, and I realized I had fallen madly in love with him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>The funny thing is\u2014Domingo shares his testimony a lot. He always says, \u201cWhen my wife could keep her mouth shut, I knew there had to be a God.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter] You know, that\u2019s really kind of funny; but I would use my words as my weapons. You know, Domingo was strong; and I couldn\u2019t match him physically. So, I thought, \u201cWhen he\u2019s sober, I\u2019m going to let him have it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut He did\u2014He taught me to forgive him. Then, about a year later, He put that love inside of me. And it gets better, and better, and better. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There is hope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Irene: <\/strong>There is <em>so much hope<\/em>. If God can come in and fix <em>our<\/em> mess\u2014because we were in the muck \/ we were two ugly creatures\u2014if God could come in and fix <em>our<\/em> mess\u2014because it was a mess \/ it was yucky \/ it was awful\u2014He can fix anybody\u2019s mess.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Domingo, this wasn\u2019t an overnight transformation\u2014I don\u2019t imagine. It\u2019s not like, all of a sudden, everything was fine at home. You guys had some patterns that had to be unlearned and had some spiritual growth that had to happen in both of your lives; didn\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes, sir; very much, sir. I mean, I believe that salvation is instantaneous, positionally, but the practical part takes time. It takes a lot of healing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI felt I\u2019d made a mess of my 20-some years that I was in control. It was time to give God the control. I realize that, in Him\u2014He did take away my desire to drink\u2014it just stopped. I say I had no more desire to drink whatsoever. It was gone completely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut yet, I knew I had a responsibility, from there on, to find out what it meant to follow God. I had no clue what that meant. So, I started to give up my\u2014changing my calendar around and started to go to church to learn what that meant \/ what was expected of me. I didn\u2019t know what was expected of me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I learned things \/ as I started reading and going through the Bible and everything\u2014just one step at a time\u2014started changing, started changing, started changing. And my boys loved it. By no time, they were just following me. They had had a void for a dad anyway. We were out, doing all kinds of great things. We were\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt work\u2014I used to work\u2014I remember, prior to my salvation, I was working, day and night sometimes. I would\u2014I think, one year, I was gone 48 weekends out of the year\u2014just traveling and different things. So, I said, \u201cOkay; I need to be home.\u201d\u00a0 So, I went, and I said: \u201cHey, I can only work 40 hours a week. If that\u2019s not good enough for you, that\u2019s fine\u2014I\u2019ll leave. I\u2019ll drop the career \/ change everything.\u201d\u00a0 He said: \u201cNo; we\u2019ll take what we can get. If 40 hours is all you can give us, that\u2019s what we\u2019ll take.\u201d\u00a0 So, that drastically changed. I was home at 5:30 every day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What did you do with Irene?\u00a0 You went after her heart to love her. Explain how different you were with her after your conversion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>I realized my responsibility to make her number two in my life\u2014should I say, after Christ\u2014and started cultivating the relationship, pursuing her, doing\u2014the Bible says you have to earn trust. I knew she no longer trusted me. And I had to do things to earn that. So, everything I said\u2014I made sure that I did \/ that I would do\u2014whether it be home at 5:30, whether it be doing this\u2014the promises made and everything we did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we built some great memories. We had so much\u2014ten years of a disastrous marriage\u2014that I had \/ I felt like we needed to build some fond memories. So, we went out\u2014and I remember we bought a camping conversion van, and a boat, and motorcycles. We just went out and played for a year and did all kinds of fun\u2014spent time together, just every weekend, and doing all these neat things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Irene, he said that he noticed the ability for you to control your tongue. [Laughter] What did you notice about him that struck you as he began to pursue Christ?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I think what I <em>loved<\/em> about him was watching how passionate he was becoming for his love for God\u2014I mean\u2014he did a 180. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo this day, I\u2019ve never met anybody who was walking one way and turned around <em>completely<\/em> and walked the other way. He was becoming a man of God\u2014he was studying the Word, and he was growing. He started to woo me\u2014I guess you could say\u2014and he started doing things. He started to cherish who I was, and I was valuable to him. And to be loved and to love is an amazing thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe changed <em>so much<\/em> that I knew God was in his life, and I <em>knew<\/em> God had His hand on him. So, I knew that, if I held onto his hand\u2014that he was holding onto God\u2019s hand\u2014we were going to go in the right direction. So, I surrendered. That was tough because I don\u2019t surrender easily, but I knew that God had given me this man. He was a new creature, and I was going to do everything to fall in love with him that I could do. God filled me with that desire, but I had to also do my part. He wooed, and he won; because I\u2019m still madly in love with him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did it take ten years?\u2014because he talks about ten years of a bad marriage, and now, he has to repair the years that the locusts had eaten. How long before you were looking at him and going, \u201cGod gave me a new husband\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Well, you know, when he started to change\u2014it happened so quickly that he did these big changes\u2014like he stopped drinking. So, it wasn\u2019t really that difficult because he was like two people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen he was drinking, he was ugly; but when he was sober, he was beautiful. And so, they were so extreme. So, it wasn\u2019t hard because I knew that side of him\u2014there was that side of him. We never talked about it, but there was that beautiful side of him. And he was an <em>amazing<\/em> dad. He <em>never<\/em> hurt my kids. He was <em>such<\/em> a good dad. So, when I saw that he was <em>trying<\/em> and God was working in him, I knew that he\u2014God was taking him on a journey. I didn\u2019t want to get left behind\u2014is the bottom line!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, this is a love story that doesn\u2019t end here. Truthfully, Bob started today\u2019s broadcast by asking me a question, \u201cWhat kind of chance would you give a couple who were married at 16\u2014had to get married\u2014there was abuse\u2014emotional\/physical\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cno pattern for how to survive a marriage.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No; but if you asked me, Bob, \u201cWhat would you think of that couple, who started out that way\u2014went on to become parents and foster care parents of 32 children?\u201d\u00a0 I would say, \u201cApart from God\u2014no chance.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019d say, \u201cWe ought to get them on the radio,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s what you\u2019d say. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019d say, \u201cI want to tell that story!\u201d [Laughter] And there is more to this story; but what I want the listener to hear: \u201cRegardless of your circumstances, regardless of your track record, regardless of your spouse\u2019s track record, there is a God. He cares about you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes; He does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cHe <em>does<\/em> show up in peoples\u2019 lives, continuously. He\u2019s there\u2014He is at work. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to trust Him; and you need to be a part of a growing, Christian community\u2014a church that\u2019s supports you \/ that\u2019s discipling you so you know how to respond to these circumstances; but you need to hang in there and not quit.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; I think that one way couples receive hope to go the distance is by hearing stories like the story we\u2019re hearing this week from Irene and Domingo Garcia.
