The two of them decided to marry, and Domingo and Irene Garcia\u2019s marriage did not start off in a healthy place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>I drank to the point that everybody around me was associated with drinking. Every occasion was an occasion for a party and to get drunk. That\u2019s what that turned into\u2014a lot of people coming in that I didn\u2019t know\u2014men that were foul. They were just very negative and had cruel things to say. I knew that it would be a bad place for Irene to be, and she was a 16-year-old girl. These guys would just get drunk and foul. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, July 5<sup>th<\/sup>. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever heard you and Barbara described as messy people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, have you been to our house and had a surprise visit?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 That\u2019s only because we know how to prepare our house when we invite guests. Isn\u2019t that what we all do?\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There is that room that I\u2019ve seen you put stuff in when you have a guest coming over. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Ohhh! Yes; you should see my hunting closet. It\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But that\u2019s not the kind of messy people were talking about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No; it\u2019s not. We\u2019re talking about how\u2014well, just how life spins out people that\u2014well, they need a lot of love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And we may not be described as messy people, but the truth is all of us are; aren\u2019t we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We are messy people, and the subtitle of the book we\u2019re going to talk about today is <em>When God Rescues Messy People<\/em>. The name of the book is <em>Rich in Love<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIrene Garcia wrote it. She is here, along with her husband Domingo. Welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Thank you for having us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Thank you so much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Domingo and Irene live in California. They have been married since 1968. They have been foster care parents\u2014or had children of their own for\u2014count it\u201432 children. Now, is that the accurate number now, or has it gone up?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>No; it\u2019s 32 still. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s still 32. Well, with folks like you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019ll check before the time the program\u2019s over\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014to see if it has changed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You guys have quite a story. In fact, your story really begins with the homes that you come from. They couldn\u2019t be more different. What three words would you use, Irene, to describe the home you grew up in?\u00a0 Domingo, it\u2019s coming to you next\u2014same question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I would say, \u201cMexican, happy, and musical.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow!\u00a0 Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was a fun environment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>It was a <em>great<\/em> environment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a real typical Mexican\u2014jovial\u2014just full of love and laughter. I mean, I had a happy childhood. I loved my life!\u00a0 I think back on my life, and I just\u2014what memories. I <em>loved<\/em> my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay. How about you, Domingo?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>I would have to say, \u201cCold, hungry, and afraid.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow!\u00a0 Unpack that a bit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Well, with ten of us kids, there just wasn\u2019t enough of anything to go around\u2014whether it was warmth, or food, or love. There wasn\u2019t any of that. My dad was pretty physical, and he had a temper. You had a tendency to be cautious about everything you did, wondering if it was right or wrong\u2014not knowing because you weren\u2019t taught what right or wrong was \/ not knowing whether you were crossing a line or not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you grew up in an abusive home? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes, sir. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Were you ever hit?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes, sir. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you ever vow, when you grew up and became a husband and a daddy, that you would never do that to your kids?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>No; I don\u2019t think I did. I didn\u2019t think that far. I was pretty young\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I was pretty young. I think my dad left when I was about seven\u2014best of my memory. That came later in life but not at that point\u2014no. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You met Irene when the two of you were in junior high; right?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes, sir. We were 13 years old. <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And were you instantly attracted to her?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>No; I have to say not. I was more of a wild party kind of guy and more running around with the guys than I was so much with the girls\u2014but no; not instantly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you notice him, Irene?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Immediately. I went to the water faucet to take a drink. I looked up and I saw this <em>cute<\/em> boy. I thought \/ I said\u2014this is the truth: \u201cI\u2019m going to marry that boy.\u201d After I said that, I thought: \u201cWhat?!\u00a0 Why did I say such a silly thing?\u201d And I <em>did<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you know anything about him?\u00a0 Did you know he was a troublemaker?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>All I knew was that he was <em>cute<\/em>, and he was new at our school. [Laughter]\u00a0 And he was one of those guys that\u2014everything my dad would not want me to be involved in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember seeing him\u2014and he was 13, and we were in junior high, and he was smoking on campus. Back then\u2014you know how far we go back\u2014that was like a no-no. I mean, you would\u2014you\u2019d be suspended for wearing strapless shoes, you know?\u00a0 It was very different back then. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But I saw him\u2014and I don\u2019t know\u2014I remember just thinking, \u201cI\u2019m going to marry him.\u201d Then, I thought, \u201cThat was just a dumb thing to say\u201d; but obviously, God was working all the way back then. <br><br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What did your dad think about him?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>My dad didn\u2019t want me to have anything to do with him. First, my dad said we could start seeing each other at 15. Then, when I turned 15, my dad said, \u201cAbsolutely not.\u201d\u00a0 Then, we started sneaking around. One day, my dad came home and found him. We were\u2014he would sneak in through my window. So, one day, my dad came home, and we\u2019d fallen asleep\u2014we were just lying on the bed\u2014but my dad opened my bedroom door, and there we were. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He called the police. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>He did call the police. He called the police\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And as a result, found out some things about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Lots of things. I found out some things too. At that time, I think he was 15. The police were reading his record\u2014and it just kept going, and going, and going. At that point, things weren\u2019t as good as they were in the beginning\u2014you know\u2014infatuation. I was\u2014didn\u2019t know what to do. I was kind of lost, at that point; but at that time, my father and I didn\u2019t talk because so much had happened between Domingo, and me, and my father. <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat particular night, my father walked in\u2014and I\u2019ll never forget\u2014my father held his cool. He didn\u2019t get mad. He just called the police. Domingo sat there, with his head down, and we heard his record. Then, the police took him. My father went to his room\u2014didn\u2019t say anything to me except: \u201cYou know what? I\u2019m going to lock you up if that\u2019s what I have to do to keep you in the house.\u201d So, that was it. That was the beginning of his relationship with Domingo. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Domingo, what was on your rap sheet that was read that night?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Just a lot of\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014theft and\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014everything from breaking curfew to vandalism to drinking in public\u2014all kinds of different things. I think I had even stolen a car\u2014different things of that nature. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re 15. You don\u2019t even have a driver\u2019s license, and you\u2019re stealing cars?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Well, I was caught driving a car without a license. So, they labeled it as being stolen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Were these just survival skills for you? What was going on?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>I have to say that I grew up pretty much a good boy\u2014I was mischievous. I got in trouble, like any other child, but I wasn\u2019t wicked. I didn\u2019t want to go out and destroy the world or anything and start fires or whatever. It was just that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember coming to a point, at nine or ten years old, where I realized that things were different for me than other kids. You know\u2014they had dads \/ they had moms\u2014they had all these things that were\u2014they would go to Disneyland, and go camping, and do all these things. We did nothing\u2014absolutely nothing. I said, \u201cWell, this isn\u2019t fair.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI grew up in a Baptist church. So, I knew of God and what He stood for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just kind of came to the conclusion that: \u201cIf there is a God, then He\u2019s not fair, and I want nothing to do with Him.\u201d At that point, I started to get in trouble. I was about ten years old. That\u2019s when I started doing anything to get out of going to church, and jumping out the window and running away, and doing different stuff\u2014just getting involved with the bad element and doing what I wanted to do, which was all the wrong way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Irene, when the police took Domingo away, back when you were15 years old\u2014and you just heard his rap sheet read to you and your dad said, \u201cI\u2019ll lock you up if that\u2019s what I have to do\u201d\u2014that should have been the end of the story; shouldn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>It should have been. It wasn\u2019t. There was a series of things that had happened. Domingo and I were already involved, sexually, at that point. Afterwards, I was starting to get fearful. I knew what I was doing was wrong. I felt very broken-hearted that I was hurting my father, because my father\u2019s always been my hero. I <em>loved<\/em> my father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know why I was attracted to Domingo and why I did the things\u2014I cut school. I started doing all these bad things that I shouldn\u2019t have done, but I can\u2019t explain why. I do know, at that point\u2014a few months later\u2014I realized that my father was right, and I needed to start making some changes. Then, that\u2019s when I eventually broke up with Domingo and just said, \u201cThis is not good.\u201d\u00a0 We were actually broken up. At the time I found out I was pregnant, we were not together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How did you find out you were pregnant?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Well, I went to a friend\u2019s house. Her older sister\u2014we were there talking. She said to me: \u201cLook at you!\u00a0 You look like you\u2019re filling out.\u201d She goes, \u201cAre you pregnant?!\u201d\u00a0 And there was\u2014everybody was in the room. It was like somebody took water and just threw it at me. I mean, I never even thought of that. So, I realized then\u2014as I started getting sick every morning and I had all the symptoms of being pregnant. I realized that was a possibility. So, I had to wait until I was 16 to go to the doctor\u2019s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to the doctor\u2019s, and he told me that I was pregnant. I didn\u2019t want Domingo to know, because I realized that we shouldn\u2019t have been together. I just decided that I was going to look to find a home for unwed mothers and see what I could do. I didn\u2019t know what I was going to do, but I knew I had to do something. I didn\u2019t want to bring shame to my family because, during those days, when you were pregnant, they shipped you away or they sent you away to get an abortion. So, it was a very, very serious thing\u2014especially in the Mexican culture\u2014to be pregnant and not to be married. So, I didn\u2019t want to bring shame on my family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How did you ultimately end up telling Domingo that you were pregnant?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I ended up going to tell him when I found out I was pregnant. I went to his work, and he was sitting on a chair. I remember thinking I had to tell him I was pregnant. I was just sick to my stomach, thinking that he was going to reject me or send me away; and he didn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was a 16-year-old boy, and he sat in his chair. I remember telling him I was pregnant. He looked up in the sky, and he was thinking. I remember thinking, \u201cOh, my gosh\u2014he\u2019s going to let me have it.\u201d\u00a0 He looked at me and he said, \u201cWell, Irene, we\u2019ll just have to get married. I\u2019ll take care of you and the baby.\u201d\u00a0 I just remember thinking, \u201cYou\u2019re only 16!\u201d but he kept his word. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What was going on, Domingo?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Well, Irene was the only friend I ever really had. It wasn\u2019t\u2014when you asked me earlier about the physical attraction with Irene, it wasn\u2019t that so much as she listened\u2014she asked me questions\u2014she wanted to know about me. That had never happened before. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019d built this relationship\u2014this real relationship. To her, it was probably one of many. To me, it was the one and only. So, I pursued that\u2014I wanted that. I also knew that I had a responsibility, and I wanted to take that\u2014take care of that. Like I said before, I wasn\u2019t evil. I didn\u2019t want to burn down the world. I knew right from wrong; I wanted to do what was right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI felt it was my responsibility, at that point, to get married and raise this child\u2014had to fight for that. It was a battle to even get married, at that time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How did your dad find out that you were pregnant?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I told him. One night, I waited for him to come home from work; because he would come home about two in the morning. He walked in the door. I said, \u201cDaddy, I have something to tell you.\u201d When I told him, he, once again, didn\u2019t say a word. He just looked at me and walked into his room. I said, \u201cDad, Domingo wants to talk to you.\u201d\u00a0 He said: \u201cI don\u2019t want to talk to him. Get him out of the house.\u201d\u00a0 I knew it was not a good idea. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>So, I went to bed that night. Then, the next day, Domingo knocked at the door and said, \u201cI\u2019m talking to your dad.\u201d He went and he pounded on his bedroom door. My father let him in, and Domingo can explain to you what happened after that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>I just\u2014I just told him that I wanted to get married\u2014that this is something that I was responsible for and we wanted to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just kind of read off criteria\u2014where I wasn\u2019t\u2014although I had a big rap sheet, I wasn\u2019t your normal 15-year-old. I had been on my own since I was 12. I had a full-time job. I had a car \/ I had insurance. I had a place to live. I had everything set-up\u2014so I was ready to take that responsibility on, and that I was responsible, and that if he would consent to us getting married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And he said, \u201cYes\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>No; he didn\u2019t answer me at that point. He just said\u2014he was very quiet\u2014didn\u2019t say much of anything\u2014didn\u2019t\u2014he really didn\u2019t ask me anything. He just let me speak. Then, he said, \u201cI\u2019ll have Irene call you and get back with you,\u201d or something along those lines. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you got married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>We did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He finally gave consent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>He did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It wasn\u2019t long after you were married that you saw another dark side of Domingo. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I did. I started to see that there was a dark side, but I didn\u2019t really know how bad it really was. It was the second day after we were married. They were planning this reception for us with Domingo\u2019s family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of a sudden\u2014you know, it was kind of a happy time\u2014people came into the house that weren\u2019t family. I saw a look of change in Domingo. Domingo said: \u201cIrene, I need to talk to you. You need to go to the room.\u201d I followed him and I thought, \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWhat happened?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe looked at me\u2014he said: \u201cIrene, I don\u2019t want you to come out. You need to stay in the room. I want you to stay in the room the rest of the evening.\u201d The way I was brought up\u2014I mean, that would be very rude to do to his family. So, my only thought was: \u201cWhy? What do you mean I can\u2019t go out? This is a reception for us! I\u2019m going to go out.\u201d\u00a0 I started to argue with him. I was very belligerent, strong-willed, and mouthy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cNo; you\u2019re not.\u201d And then, the next thing I remember is just his fist across my face. He said, \u201cYou\u2019re staying in here.\u201d I was afraid\u2014I mean, I was fearful. It kind of took the air out of me. I didn\u2019t know how to respond, but I was 16 [emotion in voice]. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNobody had ever said to me what marriage was supposed to be like. So, I thought this was part of it, but I felt like nothing. Here I was\u2014my husband walked out\u2014and I thought, \u201cI\u2019m letting fear dictate who I am.\u201d But I was fearful. I stayed in the room that night; and then, the reception went on. I thought this was my penance for having sex with my husband outside of marriage. I thought that this is what I had to go through so God would forgive me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Domingo, what was going on that night?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>I vaguely remember that night, and that\u2019s not a cop-out. I take responsibility for everything I\u2019ve done; but obviously, when you drink, you don\u2019t remember a lot. There was that time, and times after that, where I would black out. By that, I mean you don\u2019t remember things. The last thing you remembered was something in the afternoon, and you woke up the next morning\u2014type thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>To hit her, though, as you hit her\u2014that was the pattern you had experienced as a child. You were just doing what had been modeled for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes; I believe so. You, statistically, could read all about that; but I don\u2019t want that to be a cop-out. I still did that. I should take responsibility for that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s exactly why we do what we do with kids today because\u2014for Irene and I, married that young\u2014nobody told us\u2014nobody sat down and took the time to tell us what marriage should be like, what raising a child should be like, what any of those things\u2014you know, there was no training\u2014not even a mom and dad coming alongside and telling us certain things\u2014we get to figure it out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it was tough. Like I said, you will normally repeat the things that you see in your childhood. You just emulate those things. We tell that to parents, all the time, nowadays: \u201cYou\u2019re teaching your kids, whether you know it or not \/ whether you intend to or not. Everything\u2014every action you do \/ every word you say\u2014it\u2019s going to have an effect on those kids.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Irene was pregnant. There was another incident that happened, not long after that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes. Domingo was going out, and he would go out with a friend of his\u2014they\u2019d go out, and they\u2019d go drinking. This particular day\u2014he was getting dressed. I asked him where he was going. He just said, \u201cI\u2019m going out.\u201d\u00a0 You know, I started badgering. I\u2019d say: \u201cWhy are you going? Why can\u2019t you stay here with me?\u201d\u00a0 Somehow, when he came out of the bathroom, I grabbed his arm. I just\u2014you know, I was pregnant\u2014I felt ugly, and young, and alone. I just felt like he couldn\u2019t stand to be around me. So, when I grabbed his arm, he knocked me down. When he came out of the bathroom, I was lying on the floor and he kicked my stomach. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve talked about this. One day, when Domingo and I were talking about it\u2014he looked at me and he said, \u201cI don\u2019t even remember doing that, Irene.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI feel bad to talk about these things, but the reason we have talked about sharing these things is because there\u2019s hope. There is always hope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you would have told me <em>that<\/em> when I was lying on the floor\u2014feeling like no one loved me and worthless\u2014if you would have told me, then, there was hope, I would have never believed it. But God allowed me to go through all of this\u2014and Domingo\u2014so that we could see the hope that there is in Christ. You know, it was a bad day \/ it was a bad experience; but you know what? Now, here we are talking about it. I\u2019m married to an <em>amazing<\/em> man. So, there is hope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, we talked about statistics\u2014statistically\u2014the two of you getting married young, already pregnant, nobody giving you any premarital counsel\u2014that shouldn\u2019t have lasted a year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>You should have either been a single-parent mom, raising that one child, or maybe had the baby\u2014but, at some point, the two of you should have just said, \u201cForget it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Actually, it shouldn\u2019t have even taken place. We had to get consent from our parents, a priest, and a judge in order to get married at that age. It was quite a hurdle. The priest told us to give the child up and different things that we still\u2014we had to fight for that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t realize it then\u2014and still kind of funny now\u2014but we\u2019ve talked to people who said: \u201cGod was working, back then, because anybody else would have just walked away or just said, \u2018Well, there\u2019s my excuse.\u2019\u201d Everybody I knew and worked with said, \u201cHey, it\u2019s not your problem. Just go your way. Walk your way. Walk away.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 And I said, \u201cNo. No; it is.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know\u2014I know I never had any intention of hurting my child or Irene. So, some of those things I don\u2019t even remember. Here again, I\u2019m not excusing it; but I don\u2019t remember those things. Somehow, God was working, back then, because we had to work through a lot of issues, just to get this\u2014and then sitting in court all day, at the age of 16, with our parents\u2014with my mom and Irene\u2019s dad\u2014to get consent to get married. That was a big one there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I know you guys have talked to a lot of young couples who are in circumstances similar to the circumstances you were in when you first got married. You have to focus on a wife being safe\u2014protection being in place. You have to be able to address the issues of abuse--the alcohol\u2014all that was going on with you guys. I mean, you can\u2019t just ignore that stuff. But because of what you\u2019ve experienced, you have an opportunity to say to couples: \u201cThere is a chance for you to have a completely different marriage than the one you are in right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cThat doesn\u2019t happen by getting a divorce. That happens by you becoming different people. That happens through the transforming power of God\u2019s grace in your lives.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, we\u2019re going to hear, this week, your story of how God did that for both of you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to encourage our listeners to stay with us this week and hear the entire story. The two of them decided to marry, and Domingo and Irene Garcia\u2019s marriage did not start off in a healthy place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>I drank to the point that everybody around me was associated with drinking. Every occasion was an occasion for a party and to get drunk. That\u2019s what that turned into\u2014a lot of people coming in that I didn\u2019t know\u2014men that were foul. They were just very negative and had cruel things to say. I knew that it would be a bad place for Irene to be, and she was a 16-year-old girl. These guys would just get drunk and foul. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, July 5<sup>th<\/sup>. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever heard you and Barbara described as messy people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, have you been to our house and had a surprise visit?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 That\u2019s only because we know how to prepare our house when we invite guests. Isn\u2019t that what we all do?\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There is that room that I\u2019ve seen you put stuff in when you have a guest coming over. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Ohhh! Yes; you should see my hunting closet. It\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But that\u2019s not the kind of messy people were talking about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No; it\u2019s not. We\u2019re talking about how\u2014well, just how life spins out people that\u2014well, they need a lot of love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And we may not be described as messy people, but the truth is all of us are; aren\u2019t we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We are messy people, and the subtitle of the book we\u2019re going to talk about today is <em>When God Rescues Messy People<\/em>. The name of the book is <em>Rich in Love<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIrene Garcia wrote it. She is here, along with her husband Domingo. Welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Thank you for having us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Thank you so much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Domingo and Irene live in California. They have been married since 1968. They have been foster care parents\u2014or had children of their own for\u2014count it\u201432 children. Now, is that the accurate number now, or has it gone up?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>No; it\u2019s 32 still. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s still 32. Well, with folks like you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019ll check before the time the program\u2019s over\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014to see if it has changed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You guys have quite a story. In fact, your story really begins with the homes that you come from. They couldn\u2019t be more different. What three words would you use, Irene, to describe the home you grew up in?\u00a0 Domingo, it\u2019s coming to you next\u2014same question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I would say, \u201cMexican, happy, and musical.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow!\u00a0 Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was a fun environment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>It was a <em>great<\/em> environment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a real typical Mexican\u2014jovial\u2014just full of love and laughter. I mean, I had a happy childhood. I loved my life!\u00a0 I think back on my life, and I just\u2014what memories. I <em>loved<\/em> my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay. How about you, Domingo?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>I would have to say, \u201cCold, hungry, and afraid.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow!\u00a0 Unpack that a bit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Well, with ten of us kids, there just wasn\u2019t enough of anything to go around\u2014whether it was warmth, or food, or love. There wasn\u2019t any of that. My dad was pretty physical, and he had a temper. You had a tendency to be cautious about everything you did, wondering if it was right or wrong\u2014not knowing because you weren\u2019t taught what right or wrong was \/ not knowing whether you were crossing a line or not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you grew up in an abusive home? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes, sir. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Were you ever hit?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes, sir. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you ever vow, when you grew up and became a husband and a daddy, that you would never do that to your kids?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>No; I don\u2019t think I did. I didn\u2019t think that far. I was pretty young\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I was pretty young. I think my dad left when I was about seven\u2014best of my memory. That came later in life but not at that point\u2014no. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You met Irene when the two of you were in junior high; right?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes, sir. We were 13 years old. <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And were you instantly attracted to her?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>No; I have to say not. I was more of a wild party kind of guy and more running around with the guys than I was so much with the girls\u2014but no; not instantly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you notice him, Irene?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Immediately. I went to the water faucet to take a drink. I looked up and I saw this <em>cute<\/em> boy. I thought \/ I said\u2014this is the truth: \u201cI\u2019m going to marry that boy.\u201d After I said that, I thought: \u201cWhat?!\u00a0 Why did I say such a silly thing?\u201d And I <em>did<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you know anything about him?\u00a0 Did you know he was a troublemaker?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>All I knew was that he was <em>cute<\/em>, and he was new at our school. [Laughter]\u00a0 And he was one of those guys that\u2014everything my dad would not want me to be involved in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember seeing him\u2014and he was 13, and we were in junior high, and he was smoking on campus. Back then\u2014you know how far we go back\u2014that was like a no-no. I mean, you would\u2014you\u2019d be suspended for wearing strapless shoes, you know?\u00a0 It was very different back then. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But I saw him\u2014and I don\u2019t know\u2014I remember just thinking, \u201cI\u2019m going to marry him.\u201d Then, I thought, \u201cThat was just a dumb thing to say\u201d; but obviously, God was working all the way back then. <br><br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What did your dad think about him?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>My dad didn\u2019t want me to have anything to do with him. First, my dad said we could start seeing each other at 15. Then, when I turned 15, my dad said, \u201cAbsolutely not.\u201d\u00a0 Then, we started sneaking around. One day, my dad came home and found him. We were\u2014he would sneak in through my window. So, one day, my dad came home, and we\u2019d fallen asleep\u2014we were just lying on the bed\u2014but my dad opened my bedroom door, and there we were. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He called the police. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>He did call the police. He called the police\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And as a result, found out some things about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Lots of things. I found out some things too. At that time, I think he was 15. The police were reading his record\u2014and it just kept going, and going, and going. At that point, things weren\u2019t as good as they were in the beginning\u2014you know\u2014infatuation. I was\u2014didn\u2019t know what to do. I was kind of lost, at that point; but at that time, my father and I didn\u2019t talk because so much had happened between Domingo, and me, and my father. <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat particular night, my father walked in\u2014and I\u2019ll never forget\u2014my father held his cool. He didn\u2019t get mad. He just called the police. Domingo sat there, with his head down, and we heard his record. Then, the police took him. My father went to his room\u2014didn\u2019t say anything to me except: \u201cYou know what? I\u2019m going to lock you up if that\u2019s what I have to do to keep you in the house.\u201d So, that was it. That was the beginning of his relationship with Domingo. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Domingo, what was on your rap sheet that was read that night?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Just a lot of\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014theft and\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014everything from breaking curfew to vandalism to drinking in public\u2014all kinds of different things. I think I had even stolen a car\u2014different things of that nature. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re 15. You don\u2019t even have a driver\u2019s license, and you\u2019re stealing cars?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Well, I was caught driving a car without a license. So, they labeled it as being stolen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Were these just survival skills for you? What was going on?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>I have to say that I grew up pretty much a good boy\u2014I was mischievous. I got in trouble, like any other child, but I wasn\u2019t wicked. I didn\u2019t want to go out and destroy the world or anything and start fires or whatever. It was just that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember coming to a point, at nine or ten years old, where I realized that things were different for me than other kids. You know\u2014they had dads \/ they had moms\u2014they had all these things that were\u2014they would go to Disneyland, and go camping, and do all these things. We did nothing\u2014absolutely nothing. I said, \u201cWell, this isn\u2019t fair.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI grew up in a Baptist church. So, I knew of God and what He stood for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just kind of came to the conclusion that: \u201cIf there is a God, then He\u2019s not fair, and I want nothing to do with Him.\u201d At that point, I started to get in trouble. I was about ten years old. That\u2019s when I started doing anything to get out of going to church, and jumping out the window and running away, and doing different stuff\u2014just getting involved with the bad element and doing what I wanted to do, which was all the wrong way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Irene, when the police took Domingo away, back when you were15 years old\u2014and you just heard his rap sheet read to you and your dad said, \u201cI\u2019ll lock you up if that\u2019s what I have to do\u201d\u2014that should have been the end of the story; shouldn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>It should have been. It wasn\u2019t. There was a series of things that had happened. Domingo and I were already involved, sexually, at that point. Afterwards, I was starting to get fearful. I knew what I was doing was wrong. I felt very broken-hearted that I was hurting my father, because my father\u2019s always been my hero. I <em>loved<\/em> my father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know why I was attracted to Domingo and why I did the things\u2014I cut school. I started doing all these bad things that I shouldn\u2019t have done, but I can\u2019t explain why. I do know, at that point\u2014a few months later\u2014I realized that my father was right, and I needed to start making some changes. Then, that\u2019s when I eventually broke up with Domingo and just said, \u201cThis is not good.\u201d\u00a0 We were actually broken up. At the time I found out I was pregnant, we were not together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How did you find out you were pregnant?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Well, I went to a friend\u2019s house. Her older sister\u2014we were there talking. She said to me: \u201cLook at you!\u00a0 You look like you\u2019re filling out.\u201d She goes, \u201cAre you pregnant?!\u201d\u00a0 And there was\u2014everybody was in the room. It was like somebody took water and just threw it at me. I mean, I never even thought of that. So, I realized then\u2014as I started getting sick every morning and I had all the symptoms of being pregnant. I realized that was a possibility. So, I had to wait until I was 16 to go to the doctor\u2019s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to the doctor\u2019s, and he told me that I was pregnant. I didn\u2019t want Domingo to know, because I realized that we shouldn\u2019t have been together. I just decided that I was going to look to find a home for unwed mothers and see what I could do. I didn\u2019t know what I was going to do, but I knew I had to do something. I didn\u2019t want to bring shame to my family because, during those days, when you were pregnant, they shipped you away or they sent you away to get an abortion. So, it was a very, very serious thing\u2014especially in the Mexican culture\u2014to be pregnant and not to be married. So, I didn\u2019t want to bring shame on my family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How did you ultimately end up telling Domingo that you were pregnant?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I ended up going to tell him when I found out I was pregnant. I went to his work, and he was sitting on a chair. I remember thinking I had to tell him I was pregnant. I was just sick to my stomach, thinking that he was going to reject me or send me away; and he didn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was a 16-year-old boy, and he sat in his chair. I remember telling him I was pregnant. He looked up in the sky, and he was thinking. I remember thinking, \u201cOh, my gosh\u2014he\u2019s going to let me have it.\u201d\u00a0 He looked at me and he said, \u201cWell, Irene, we\u2019ll just have to get married. I\u2019ll take care of you and the baby.\u201d\u00a0 I just remember thinking, \u201cYou\u2019re only 16!\u201d but he kept his word. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What was going on, Domingo?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Well, Irene was the only friend I ever really had. It wasn\u2019t\u2014when you asked me earlier about the physical attraction with Irene, it wasn\u2019t that so much as she listened\u2014she asked me questions\u2014she wanted to know about me. That had never happened before. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019d built this relationship\u2014this real relationship. To her, it was probably one of many. To me, it was the one and only. So, I pursued that\u2014I wanted that. I also knew that I had a responsibility, and I wanted to take that\u2014take care of that. Like I said before, I wasn\u2019t evil. I didn\u2019t want to burn down the world. I knew right from wrong; I wanted to do what was right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI felt it was my responsibility, at that point, to get married and raise this child\u2014had to fight for that. It was a battle to even get married, at that time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How did your dad find out that you were pregnant?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I told him. One night, I waited for him to come home from work; because he would come home about two in the morning. He walked in the door. I said, \u201cDaddy, I have something to tell you.\u201d When I told him, he, once again, didn\u2019t say a word. He just looked at me and walked into his room. I said, \u201cDad, Domingo wants to talk to you.\u201d\u00a0 He said: \u201cI don\u2019t want to talk to him. Get him out of the house.\u201d\u00a0 I knew it was not a good idea. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>So, I went to bed that night. Then, the next day, Domingo knocked at the door and said, \u201cI\u2019m talking to your dad.\u201d He went and he pounded on his bedroom door. My father let him in, and Domingo can explain to you what happened after that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>I just\u2014I just told him that I wanted to get married\u2014that this is something that I was responsible for and we wanted to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just kind of read off criteria\u2014where I wasn\u2019t\u2014although I had a big rap sheet, I wasn\u2019t your normal 15-year-old. I had been on my own since I was 12. I had a full-time job. I had a car \/ I had insurance. I had a place to live. I had everything set-up\u2014so I was ready to take that responsibility on, and that I was responsible, and that if he would consent to us getting married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And he said, \u201cYes\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>No; he didn\u2019t answer me at that point. He just said\u2014he was very quiet\u2014didn\u2019t say much of anything\u2014didn\u2019t\u2014he really didn\u2019t ask me anything. He just let me speak. Then, he said, \u201cI\u2019ll have Irene call you and get back with you,\u201d or something along those lines. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you got married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>We did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He finally gave consent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>He did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It wasn\u2019t long after you were married that you saw another dark side of Domingo. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I did. I started to see that there was a dark side, but I didn\u2019t really know how bad it really was. It was the second day after we were married. They were planning this reception for us with Domingo\u2019s family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of a sudden\u2014you know, it was kind of a happy time\u2014people came into the house that weren\u2019t family. I saw a look of change in Domingo. Domingo said: \u201cIrene, I need to talk to you. You need to go to the room.\u201d I followed him and I thought, \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWhat happened?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe looked at me\u2014he said: \u201cIrene, I don\u2019t want you to come out. You need to stay in the room. I want you to stay in the room the rest of the evening.\u201d The way I was brought up\u2014I mean, that would be very rude to do to his family. So, my only thought was: \u201cWhy? What do you mean I can\u2019t go out? This is a reception for us! I\u2019m going to go out.\u201d\u00a0 I started to argue with him. I was very belligerent, strong-willed, and mouthy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cNo; you\u2019re not.\u201d And then, the next thing I remember is just his fist across my face. He said, \u201cYou\u2019re staying in here.\u201d I was afraid\u2014I mean, I was fearful. It kind of took the air out of me. I didn\u2019t know how to respond, but I was 16 [emotion in voice]. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNobody had ever said to me what marriage was supposed to be like. So, I thought this was part of it, but I felt like nothing. Here I was\u2014my husband walked out\u2014and I thought, \u201cI\u2019m letting fear dictate who I am.\u201d But I was fearful. I stayed in the room that night; and then, the reception went on. I thought this was my penance for having sex with my husband outside of marriage. I thought that this is what I had to go through so God would forgive me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Domingo, what was going on that night?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>I vaguely remember that night, and that\u2019s not a cop-out. I take responsibility for everything I\u2019ve done; but obviously, when you drink, you don\u2019t remember a lot. There was that time, and times after that, where I would black out. By that, I mean you don\u2019t remember things. The last thing you remembered was something in the afternoon, and you woke up the next morning\u2014type thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>To hit her, though, as you hit her\u2014that was the pattern you had experienced as a child. You were just doing what had been modeled for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Yes; I believe so. You, statistically, could read all about that; but I don\u2019t want that to be a cop-out. I still did that. I should take responsibility for that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s exactly why we do what we do with kids today because\u2014for Irene and I, married that young\u2014nobody told us\u2014nobody sat down and took the time to tell us what marriage should be like, what raising a child should be like, what any of those things\u2014you know, there was no training\u2014not even a mom and dad coming alongside and telling us certain things\u2014we get to figure it out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it was tough. Like I said, you will normally repeat the things that you see in your childhood. You just emulate those things. We tell that to parents, all the time, nowadays: \u201cYou\u2019re teaching your kids, whether you know it or not \/ whether you intend to or not. Everything\u2014every action you do \/ every word you say\u2014it\u2019s going to have an effect on those kids.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Irene was pregnant. There was another incident that happened, not long after that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>Yes. Domingo was going out, and he would go out with a friend of his\u2014they\u2019d go out, and they\u2019d go drinking. This particular day\u2014he was getting dressed. I asked him where he was going. He just said, \u201cI\u2019m going out.\u201d\u00a0 You know, I started badgering. I\u2019d say: \u201cWhy are you going? Why can\u2019t you stay here with me?\u201d\u00a0 Somehow, when he came out of the bathroom, I grabbed his arm. I just\u2014you know, I was pregnant\u2014I felt ugly, and young, and alone. I just felt like he couldn\u2019t stand to be around me. So, when I grabbed his arm, he knocked me down. When he came out of the bathroom, I was lying on the floor and he kicked my stomach. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve talked about this. One day, when Domingo and I were talking about it\u2014he looked at me and he said, \u201cI don\u2019t even remember doing that, Irene.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI feel bad to talk about these things, but the reason we have talked about sharing these things is because there\u2019s hope. There is always hope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you would have told me <em>that<\/em> when I was lying on the floor\u2014feeling like no one loved me and worthless\u2014if you would have told me, then, there was hope, I would have never believed it. But God allowed me to go through all of this\u2014and Domingo\u2014so that we could see the hope that there is in Christ. You know, it was a bad day \/ it was a bad experience; but you know what? Now, here we are talking about it. I\u2019m married to an <em>amazing<\/em> man. So, there is hope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, we talked about statistics\u2014statistically\u2014the two of you getting married young, already pregnant, nobody giving you any premarital counsel\u2014that shouldn\u2019t have lasted a year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Irene: <\/strong>I know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>You should have either been a single-parent mom, raising that one child, or maybe had the baby\u2014but, at some point, the two of you should have just said, \u201cForget it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo: <\/strong>Actually, it shouldn\u2019t have even taken place. We had to get consent from our parents, a priest, and a judge in order to get married at that age. It was quite a hurdle. The priest told us to give the child up and different things that we still\u2014we had to fight for that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t realize it then\u2014and still kind of funny now\u2014but we\u2019ve talked to people who said: \u201cGod was working, back then, because anybody else would have just walked away or just said, \u2018Well, there\u2019s my excuse.\u2019\u201d Everybody I knew and worked with said, \u201cHey, it\u2019s not your problem. Just go your way. Walk your way. Walk away.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 And I said, \u201cNo. No; it is.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know\u2014I know I never had any intention of hurting my child or Irene. So, some of those things I don\u2019t even remember. Here again, I\u2019m not excusing it; but I don\u2019t remember those things. Somehow, God was working, back then, because we had to work through a lot of issues, just to get this\u2014and then sitting in court all day, at the age of 16, with our parents\u2014with my mom and Irene\u2019s dad\u2014to get consent to get married. That was a big one there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I know you guys have talked to a lot of young couples who are in circumstances similar to the circumstances you were in when you first got married. You have to focus on a wife being safe\u2014protection being in place. You have to be able to address the issues of abuse--the alcohol\u2014all that was going on with you guys. I mean, you can\u2019t just ignore that stuff. But because of what you\u2019ve experienced, you have an opportunity to say to couples: \u201cThere is a chance for you to have a completely different marriage than the one you are in right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Domingo:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cThat doesn\u2019t happen by getting a divorce. That happens by you becoming different people.
