I think with Lieutenant Hoe, a huge part of me died that day. I think everything changed in my head, for the worst, at that moment. On the inside, I was a complete failure\u2014I mean, I failed to keep that man alive. As long as I stayed drunk, I could deal with that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, July 4<sup>th<\/sup>. Over the years, we\u2019ve had a lot of people who have asked us, in almost 25 years of programming now, what have been our favorite programs. I always tell people that my favorite programs are interviews we\u2019ve done with people whose names they would not recognize, because we\u2019ve heard some amazing stories that are all about God over that 25 year period; haven\u2019t we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We have. Among my favorite stories are those that end up showing off a couple who are trophies of God\u2019s grace and redemption in front of a live audience, like we have here\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>We do have a live audience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014on the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> cruise. [Applause]\u00a0 We are somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>The sun is setting, and it\u2019s a great day to be alive. We\u2019re going to hear a great story about Rusty and Marsha Mauney who have a blended family. You have four children between the ages of 9 and 19; is that right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>That\u2019s right!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay. Rusty, you served in the U.S. Army for more than a decade\u2014from 2003 to 2013\u2014and Marsha, you\u2019re a nurse stenographer for the Hope Pregnancy Center. You\u2014although you have a great marriage today, it was not always so. Take us back to how you two met, Rusty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou didn\u2019t waste any time in this relationship; did you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>No. We were actually on the campus of Mississippi State\u2014Mississippi State University\u2014in Starkville, Mississippi. Next to a porta potty, I met my wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s really romantic; huh?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Only one way to go from there. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, were you at a football game?\u00a0 Or what was it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>We were at a concert. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>My friend somehow stumbled upon Marsha and one of her friends, and I ended up back with the group. He had the idea that he was going to meet up with Marsha, or he was going to take her home\u2014or something like that. And somehow, I flipped the script and ended up with the good one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, give me background at this point. How old were you guys when this was going on?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Nineteen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Nineteen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were 19. Rusty, what was it about her that made you think, \u201cI think she\u2019s the one\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>I don\u2019t know\u2014 I just knew. I don\u2019t\u2014as soon as we made eye contact, it was like, \u201cThat\u2019s it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow. So, there is love at first sight. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt least, for one of you, there was love at first sight. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Yes; it took her awhile. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>We dated for a little while. Then, he was going to go to Ole Miss in Oxford, and I was still at the junior college in another city. I did not think that a long distance relationship would be good for nursing school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy intentions were that I would tell him that we didn\u2019t need to spend any time together and that he would kind of chase me\u2014he would tell me all the reasons we were meant to be\u2014but he actually didn\u2019t. He just said, \u201cOkay,\u201d and came and picked up his guitar and went to Oxford. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, after this opening whirlwind, it kind of died; and you figured it was over?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Different, various things kind of kept bringing us back and forth into each other\u2019s lives over the next, probably, four to five years. We date\u2014then, we wouldn\u2019t talk for a while\u2014nothing major\u2014just life going in different directions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rusty, what was going on with you over that four- to five-year period?\u00a0 You said you\u2019d wanted to marry her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Yes. It kind of surprised me when she couldn\u2019t see it. It was obvious that it was going to happen. [Laughter] She just ran away. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I remember having to tell her that I already had a kid. As a 19-year-old guy\u2014you know, freshman year \/ first semester of my freshman year at college\u2014 I have a son. Then, to fall in love with somebody and then have to tell them that\u2014I think the way I said it\u2014I was like: \u201cSo, do you have any kids?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI do.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 And [she]: \u201cReally?\u201d\u00a0 So, that\u2019s kind of how I broke the ice with that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, Marsha, what did you think at that point?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>I was okay with that. That was a little scary, because we were only 19; but I was okay with that. I believe I wrote him a letter, actually, telling him that I was okay and that I wanted to meet Jimmy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Enough so you continued on with the relationship over the next five years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>\u2014off and on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, was there anything spiritual going on in either of your lives during this five-year period that you were dating one another?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>I was practically born into a church\u2014my father was a deacon \/ my mother was a Sunday school teacher. I was in church every time the doors were open until I got into my college years and I had that freedom to, all of a sudden, make those choices on my own. I kind of wandered into that college life a little bit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rusty, what about you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>For me, it was\u2014I knew there was a God. I believed in Jesus, but the problem I had with church was they were too judgmental on\u2014they wouldn\u2019t understand. Nobody ever would be okay with my lifestyle, which was drinking and partying all the time. Really, I just needed an excuse not to go; and that was the one I picked. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I\u2019m curious: \u201cDid you know that was his lifestyle\u2014drinking and partying all the time?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha:<\/strong> Originally, I did not know, at the time, the depth that that was a part of his life. I mean, so many people in college drink; but I didn\u2019t really realize that there was a deeper level to that than just kind of a social drink. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you got married?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>So, we got married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And immediately\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>\u2014we got in a car with my guitar, a Chihuahua, and a jar of change\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>\u2014my grandmother\u2019s jar of change. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>\u2014and drove to Fort Lewis, Washington, outside of Seattle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How long after marriage were you deployed?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Eight months. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Eight months. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell us about your deployment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>It was rough. I was assigned to an infantry platoon in the 25<sup>th<\/sup> Infantry Division. Then, I remember, on January 22, 2005, a very close friend of mine died in my arms\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201416:02 was the time of death. I think everything changed in my head, for the worst, at that moment. That was by far the worst day of my life. It was that day\u2014I still had to get up, put the uniform on, put the boots on, and go out and do the deal. You didn\u2019t have time to cry\u2014I mean, if you cried, you got shot. If you showed any emotion, you got shot or blown up. So, I put my game face on \/ put my uniform on, and I did what I needed to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think with Lieutenant Hoe, who was my friend that died, a huge part of me died that day. That\u2019s my\u2014everything up here in my head has not been the same since. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had the \u201cSuck it up, walk it off, drink water, drive on\u201d mentality. That\u2019s what I did for years after that, where it was\u2014I was fine to talk about it, because it was completely emotionless; because I didn\u2019t have any emotion. I had two\u2014<em>nothing<\/em> and extremely mad\u2014like to the point of rage\u2014not just \u201cI\u2019m mad at you,\u201d but rage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a little brief part of reprieve in there\u2014where in the deployment, I came home for R&amp;R\u2014and I actually got to see my youngest son born. I went from: one minute, I was on the streets of Mosul in a fire-fight. Two days later \/ two or three days later, I was in a hospital room watching my son being born. Then, ten days later, I was back in Mosul. So, it was just bam, bam, bam. It\u2019s just hard to\u2014there is no adjustment there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Marsha, did you have any sense that there was trauma in your husband\u2019s life?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Not during that two-week time period. It wasn\u2019t until after he got home from that deployment. Here we are\u2014I had moved back to Mississippi during the deployment, because I was pregnant with my first child. Me and the baby went back to Seattle to welcome him home. That\u2019s when I knew, pretty quickly, this was not the same man that I sent to war. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>How did you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>The drinking went to very high levels. All those emotions that I had fallen in love with in this man\u2014the one that had written poetry, and played the guitar for me, and loved me so well\u2014there was none of that there. There was just this\u2014it was either, like he said\u2014it was either nothingness or it was extreme rage that could be about <em>anything<\/em>. He would come home drinking, and he would go to bed drinking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just something I was so not used to\u2014I mean, I never had seen my parents drink at all growing up; you know?\u00a0 It was just such a <em>shock<\/em> to me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Rusty, you indicated when you did come home on U.S. soil that you began to have an affair\u2014not with a woman?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>The drinking became the center of my life\u2014it became my god, my wife\u2014my everything. I didn\u2019t realize that until we actually went to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the speakers was talking about how he had a porn addiction or some sort vice that\u2014no; he had not been cheating on his wife with another woman\u2014but he\u2019d been cheating on her with this other non-flesh-and-blood thing. That smacked me upside the head\u2014it was like: \u201cWow!\u00a0 I really do have a problem with this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m married to a bottle right now.\u201d\u00a0 And she was completely on the back burner. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Nine years into your marriage, then, another bombshell took place when he revealed\u2014what?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>There was a situation with, actually, somebody I went to church with that I kept thinking was a little too friendly; but there was no real evidence of that until after we left Texas and we moved to Tennessee\u2014the evidence was kind of shoved into my face. I confronted him with it. That was a <em>really<\/em> hard day, because that was the day that there had been another woman that he was having too much communication with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>By God\u2019s grace, this had not become a physical affair; but it was an emotional affair. It was headed in the wrong direction; wasn\u2019t it, Rusty?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Yes; she was the babysitter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>At the time that he left for his deployment in 2010, I was literally praying, \u201cGod, just don\u2019t let me hate him\u201d; but I was actually almost relieved he was going on another deployment because, then, there would be peace in my home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere wouldn\u2019t be fighting \/ there wouldn\u2019t be drinking\u2014I could just take care of the kids and have some peace. I didn\u2019t want anything bad to happen to him, but I was almost glad he was leaving so we wouldn\u2019t separate from a legal standpoint. The Army was going to separate us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Were you thinking about divorce?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>At that point, no. I just wanted things to be quiet. I had a deployment\u2014so I didn\u2019t have to think about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>\u2014divorce. God just removed him and took him to Afghanistan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And Afghanistan had to be Mosul times two; wasn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Not\u2014well, at that point, I knew how to do it. I was\u2014I had been there, done that, and got the t-shirt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>So, then, he\u2014yes; he came back\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>I was good at that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Marsha: <\/strong>\u2014from Afghanistan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Everything on this side\u2014the U.S. side\u2014I was horrible at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Over there, I was the <em>man<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>He came back from Afghanistan. I thought, after this year of deployment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I had really gotten pretty close to God during that time\u2014and I began to feel hopeful that, when he came home, things would be different and things would get better. They were for a little while. Then, the drinking came back. Then, there was another situation with a female coworker. It was another situation that was teetering on the edge of going off a cliff. At that point, he was actually gone doing some training in Louisiana. I found this out and called my mom and said: \u201cCan you meet me half way and take the kids?\u00a0 I just need you to take the kids a couple of days,\u201d\u2014which is something that I never ever do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey didn\u2019t know why, but they came and got the kids. I literally rented a carpet cleaner and was standing in my living room cleaning carpets just to get out some aggression and cry. That\u2019s when the FamilyLife radio program came on, and it was the voice Sherry telling her story. I ended up sitting on the floor, sobbing, listening to their story of what God did in their marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s when I knew that I had to find out more, because I was starting to feel like: \u201cEither my life is going to be like this forever,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m going to end up in a divorce. I do <em>not<\/em> want that for us, and I do not want that for these four children that we have brought together.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The person you heard on the radio that day\u2014Sherry Jennings \/ she and her husband Scott\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014their story was one that we spent, I think, three days unpacking on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. It had parallels. Scott was drinking. He had been more than emotionally-unfaithful with his wife. Their marriage had ended up in a divorce. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It wasn\u2019t until Scott, really, hit bottom and realized that he needed Christ that began the turnaround that led to them ultimately reconciling \/ remarrying. By the time we were talking to them, they were leading a marriage ministry at their church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you heard that, what kind of hope did it give you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>For me, it made all the difference; because we had not divorced yet. I just knew that if God could take, literally, a dead marriage that had ended in divorce and turn it into a marriage ministry, then, God could do anything with our marriage too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When did you have a confrontation with your husband about where your relationship was?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>It was a drunk night, where I literally went into my closet. I took my wedding band off, because I was so tired. I took my wedding ring off, and I looked at my hand\u2014I imagined Rusty\u2019s life if we divorced, and I imagined what my life would be like if we divorced. Then, I imagined Jimmy, and Lizzie, and Aaron, and Natalie. I couldn\u2019t find one of those six people whose lives would be better if we divorced. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I put my ring back on my finger; and I think we just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014there was never a big \u201cAha!\u201d moment for us. I know a lot of people look for that\u2014like: \u201cThis happened, and everything changed\u201d; but it was slow, little incremental movements. It started with\u2014we got into some Christian counseling. Then, in February of 2013, we went to our first <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> in Nashville, North Carolina. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You got tricked into that; didn\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Yes. [Laughter]\u00a0 I did <em>not<\/em> want to go. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re still not sure how that happened; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Yes: \u201cI don\u2019t see how <em>this<\/em> happened!\u00a0 How did she sucker me into\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>All weekend!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cgetting me on stage with Dennis Rainey and Bob Lepine?\u201d but I went. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of me went just because I was in trouble, and I had to check the block and do it. There was a part of me, on the inside, that knew that it wasn\u2019t all my fault\u2014actually, none of it was my fault \/ it was all her fault. They were going to say some cool stuff that would give me ammo to fire back at her. I was like: \u201cI\u2019ll beat you at your own game. I\u2019ll show you how much your marriage stuff will do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>\u00a0It was a cool weekend away. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How did that work for you at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>God slapped me a bunch that weekend. Everything up until that point was\u2014and up until recently, really, has been: \u201c<em>I<\/em> didn\u2019t get treated right by my wife,\u201d \u201c<em>I<\/em> didn\u2019t get to have as much sex as I wanted to,\u201d \u201c<em>I<\/em> didn\u2019t get to drink when I wanted to,\u201d \u201c<em>I<\/em> didn\u2019t get to go hunting when I wanted to,\u201d \u201c<em>I<\/em> didn\u2019t get to do this, and I didn\u2019t get to do that.\u201d\u00a0 It occurred to me, one day, that everything I said had <em>I<\/em> in it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>The one big thing we did take away from that <em>Weekend to Remember <\/em>was\u2014we got really excited about <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em>. I don\u2019t know if it was because we were in such a bad place and they knew that or they just weren\u2019t interested, but we didn\u2019t get the reception that we wanted to. We wanted to get three or four couples to go away for a weekend and do <em>Art of Marriage<\/em>. Then, we were going to give it to the masses; and we were excited about that; but nobody really was interested in it. So, that kind of fizzled away and went kind of off to the side. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe kept doing our same dance of getting along for a while. He would have a little sober time for two to three months, and things would seem a little bit better. Then, it would blow up again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>It really never occurred to me during this whole thing\u2014hindsight is 20\/20\u2014the times we would get along would be those sixty to ninety days of sober time, but I never really worked on the underlying problem. The drinking was not my biggest problem. The drinking was a symptom of my biggest problem. My selfishness was my biggest problem\u2014I was putting me before Marsha; I was putting me before God; I was putting me before everything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was doing that because I\u2014working through some of the stuff from Iraq\u2014I mean, I failed to keep that man alive. When you get down to the nitty-gritty stuff\u2014I mean, it\u2019s\u2014I was\u2014on the inside, I was a complete failure. As long as I stayed drunk, then, I was good; and I could deal with that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>And God was working on me throughout all of this; because it\u2019s very easy, when you have a spouse that has <em>big<\/em> flaws that you\u2019re looking at, to really put all that emphasis on that person. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was very confused, like: \u201cHow am I supposed to be this Christian, godly, submissive wife to a husband who is an addict and is not acting like Christ?\u201d I didn\u2019t know where to go in that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAbout six months after we went to <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, Sherry Jennings had been advertising about wanting to do a Bible study about the Laura Doyle book, <em>The Surrendered Wife<\/em>; and that\u2019s very counterintuitive to everything I knew in my heart of how I lived. I was not a surrendered wife\u2014I was a control-freak. If I couldn\u2019t control his drinking, I could control every other aspect of our lives. Finally, I broke down on the 12<sup>th<\/sup> of August that year of 2013 and ordered the book through Amazon\u2014<em>The Surrendered Wife<\/em>. The next day was my 34<sup>th<\/sup> birthday. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut on August 20<sup>th<\/sup>, I actually had a seizure, driving down the road with two of our children in the car. That was quite a terrifying moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I came to, and you realize that your children could have been dead: \u201cWho knows what could have happened?\u201d\u00a0 It was a very scary moment. But what also happens, when you have a seizure driving down the road, is that the state of Tennessee does not like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>And they don\u2019t let you drive for six months. So, here we are\u2014we don\u2019t live in the state with our family. I have four children, and I can\u2019t drive for six months; but the next day in the mail that book, <em>The Surrendered Wife<\/em>, showed up on August 21<sup>st<\/sup>. God had literally made me be still; but it was just God\u2019s perfect timing because I was in a place where I had to start relinquishing some of my control. He was <em>never<\/em> going to be leader of our household as long as I was trying to lead and control everything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, God actually ended up doing some healing between you two\u2014so much so that by 2016, you ultimately did host an <em>Art of Marriage<\/em> weekend for\u2014how many couples?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Sixty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sixty couples. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Sixty couples. [Applause]\u00a0 That\u2019s God!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Our story could have easily ended in divorce\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>\u2014many, many stops along that timeline. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But it didn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>But it didn\u2019t. That commitment to God, sometimes, was stronger than my commitment to Rusty; because there were times when marriage was really hard. I had to stop leaning on this man to make me happy, because he wasn\u2019t making me happy. I had to get really serious with God that God was the only person that could fix this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>And that\u2019s the key\u2014God in the middle. That\u2019s the glue that held us together. Like she said, it could have gone so many different directions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you\u2019re really on the line now because you\u2019ve told your story to several hundred thousand people\u2014a lot in your community that are going to hold you accountable to keep on keepin\u2019 on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>On January 22, 2005, a very close friend of mine died in my arms. I think with Lieutenant Hoe, a huge part of me died that day. I think everything changed in my head, for the worst, at that moment. On the inside, I was a complete failure\u2014I mean, I failed to keep that man alive. As long as I stayed drunk, I could deal with that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, July 4<sup>th<\/sup>. Over the years, we\u2019ve had a lot of people who have asked us, in almost 25 years of programming now, what have been our favorite programs. I always tell people that my favorite programs are interviews we\u2019ve done with people whose names they would not recognize, because we\u2019ve heard some amazing stories that are all about God over that 25 year period; haven\u2019t we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We have. Among my favorite stories are those that end up showing off a couple who are trophies of God\u2019s grace and redemption in front of a live audience, like we have here\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>We do have a live audience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014on the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> cruise. [Applause]\u00a0 We are somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>The sun is setting, and it\u2019s a great day to be alive. We\u2019re going to hear a great story about Rusty and Marsha Mauney who have a blended family. You have four children between the ages of 9 and 19; is that right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>That\u2019s right!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay. Rusty, you served in the U.S. Army for more than a decade\u2014from 2003 to 2013\u2014and Marsha, you\u2019re a nurse stenographer for the Hope Pregnancy Center. You\u2014although you have a great marriage today, it was not always so. Take us back to how you two met, Rusty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou didn\u2019t waste any time in this relationship; did you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>No. We were actually on the campus of Mississippi State\u2014Mississippi State University\u2014in Starkville, Mississippi. Next to a porta potty, I met my wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s really romantic; huh?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Only one way to go from there. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, were you at a football game?\u00a0 Or what was it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>We were at a concert. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>My friend somehow stumbled upon Marsha and one of her friends, and I ended up back with the group. He had the idea that he was going to meet up with Marsha, or he was going to take her home\u2014or something like that. And somehow, I flipped the script and ended up with the good one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, give me background at this point. How old were you guys when this was going on?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Nineteen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Nineteen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were 19. Rusty, what was it about her that made you think, \u201cI think she\u2019s the one\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>I don\u2019t know\u2014 I just knew. I don\u2019t\u2014as soon as we made eye contact, it was like, \u201cThat\u2019s it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow. So, there is love at first sight. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt least, for one of you, there was love at first sight. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Yes; it took her awhile. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>We dated for a little while. Then, he was going to go to Ole Miss in Oxford, and I was still at the junior college in another city. I did not think that a long distance relationship would be good for nursing school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy intentions were that I would tell him that we didn\u2019t need to spend any time together and that he would kind of chase me\u2014he would tell me all the reasons we were meant to be\u2014but he actually didn\u2019t. He just said, \u201cOkay,\u201d and came and picked up his guitar and went to Oxford. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, after this opening whirlwind, it kind of died; and you figured it was over?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Different, various things kind of kept bringing us back and forth into each other\u2019s lives over the next, probably, four to five years. We date\u2014then, we wouldn\u2019t talk for a while\u2014nothing major\u2014just life going in different directions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rusty, what was going on with you over that four- to five-year period?\u00a0 You said you\u2019d wanted to marry her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Yes. It kind of surprised me when she couldn\u2019t see it. It was obvious that it was going to happen. [Laughter] She just ran away. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I remember having to tell her that I already had a kid. As a 19-year-old guy\u2014you know, freshman year \/ first semester of my freshman year at college\u2014 I have a son. Then, to fall in love with somebody and then have to tell them that\u2014I think the way I said it\u2014I was like: \u201cSo, do you have any kids?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI do.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 And [she]: \u201cReally?\u201d\u00a0 So, that\u2019s kind of how I broke the ice with that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, Marsha, what did you think at that point?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>I was okay with that. That was a little scary, because we were only 19; but I was okay with that. I believe I wrote him a letter, actually, telling him that I was okay and that I wanted to meet Jimmy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Enough so you continued on with the relationship over the next five years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>\u2014off and on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, was there anything spiritual going on in either of your lives during this five-year period that you were dating one another?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>I was practically born into a church\u2014my father was a deacon \/ my mother was a Sunday school teacher. I was in church every time the doors were open until I got into my college years and I had that freedom to, all of a sudden, make those choices on my own. I kind of wandered into that college life a little bit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rusty, what about you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>For me, it was\u2014I knew there was a God. I believed in Jesus, but the problem I had with church was they were too judgmental on\u2014they wouldn\u2019t understand. Nobody ever would be okay with my lifestyle, which was drinking and partying all the time. Really, I just needed an excuse not to go; and that was the one I picked. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I\u2019m curious: \u201cDid you know that was his lifestyle\u2014drinking and partying all the time?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha:<\/strong> Originally, I did not know, at the time, the depth that that was a part of his life. I mean, so many people in college drink; but I didn\u2019t really realize that there was a deeper level to that than just kind of a social drink. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you got married?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>So, we got married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And immediately\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>\u2014we got in a car with my guitar, a Chihuahua, and a jar of change\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>\u2014my grandmother\u2019s jar of change. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>\u2014and drove to Fort Lewis, Washington, outside of Seattle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How long after marriage were you deployed?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Eight months. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Eight months. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell us about your deployment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>It was rough. I was assigned to an infantry platoon in the 25<sup>th<\/sup> Infantry Division. Then, I remember, on January 22, 2005, a very close friend of mine died in my arms\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201416:02 was the time of death. I think everything changed in my head, for the worst, at that moment. That was by far the worst day of my life. It was that day\u2014I still had to get up, put the uniform on, put the boots on, and go out and do the deal. You didn\u2019t have time to cry\u2014I mean, if you cried, you got shot. If you showed any emotion, you got shot or blown up. So, I put my game face on \/ put my uniform on, and I did what I needed to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think with Lieutenant Hoe, who was my friend that died, a huge part of me died that day. That\u2019s my\u2014everything up here in my head has not been the same since. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had the \u201cSuck it up, walk it off, drink water, drive on\u201d mentality. That\u2019s what I did for years after that, where it was\u2014I was fine to talk about it, because it was completely emotionless; because I didn\u2019t have any emotion. I had two\u2014<em>nothing<\/em> and extremely mad\u2014like to the point of rage\u2014not just \u201cI\u2019m mad at you,\u201d but rage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a little brief part of reprieve in there\u2014where in the deployment, I came home for R&amp;R\u2014and I actually got to see my youngest son born. I went from: one minute, I was on the streets of Mosul in a fire-fight. Two days later \/ two or three days later, I was in a hospital room watching my son being born. Then, ten days later, I was back in Mosul. So, it was just bam, bam, bam. It\u2019s just hard to\u2014there is no adjustment there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Marsha, did you have any sense that there was trauma in your husband\u2019s life?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Not during that two-week time period. It wasn\u2019t until after he got home from that deployment. Here we are\u2014I had moved back to Mississippi during the deployment, because I was pregnant with my first child. Me and the baby went back to Seattle to welcome him home. That\u2019s when I knew, pretty quickly, this was not the same man that I sent to war. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>How did you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>The drinking went to very high levels. All those emotions that I had fallen in love with in this man\u2014the one that had written poetry, and played the guitar for me, and loved me so well\u2014there was none of that there. There was just this\u2014it was either, like he said\u2014it was either nothingness or it was extreme rage that could be about <em>anything<\/em>. He would come home drinking, and he would go to bed drinking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just something I was so not used to\u2014I mean, I never had seen my parents drink at all growing up; you know?\u00a0 It was just such a <em>shock<\/em> to me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Rusty, you indicated when you did come home on U.S. soil that you began to have an affair\u2014not with a woman?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>The drinking became the center of my life\u2014it became my god, my wife\u2014my everything. I didn\u2019t realize that until we actually went to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the speakers was talking about how he had a porn addiction or some sort vice that\u2014no; he had not been cheating on his wife with another woman\u2014but he\u2019d been cheating on her with this other non-flesh-and-blood thing. That smacked me upside the head\u2014it was like: \u201cWow!\u00a0 I really do have a problem with this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m married to a bottle right now.\u201d\u00a0 And she was completely on the back burner. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Nine years into your marriage, then, another bombshell took place when he revealed\u2014what?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>There was a situation with, actually, somebody I went to church with that I kept thinking was a little too friendly; but there was no real evidence of that until after we left Texas and we moved to Tennessee\u2014the evidence was kind of shoved into my face. I confronted him with it. That was a <em>really<\/em> hard day, because that was the day that there had been another woman that he was having too much communication with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>By God\u2019s grace, this had not become a physical affair; but it was an emotional affair. It was headed in the wrong direction; wasn\u2019t it, Rusty?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Yes; she was the babysitter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>At the time that he left for his deployment in 2010, I was literally praying, \u201cGod, just don\u2019t let me hate him\u201d; but I was actually almost relieved he was going on another deployment because, then, there would be peace in my home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere wouldn\u2019t be fighting \/ there wouldn\u2019t be drinking\u2014I could just take care of the kids and have some peace. I didn\u2019t want anything bad to happen to him, but I was almost glad he was leaving so we wouldn\u2019t separate from a legal standpoint. The Army was going to separate us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Were you thinking about divorce?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>At that point, no. I just wanted things to be quiet. I had a deployment\u2014so I didn\u2019t have to think about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>\u2014divorce. God just removed him and took him to Afghanistan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And Afghanistan had to be Mosul times two; wasn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Not\u2014well, at that point, I knew how to do it. I was\u2014I had been there, done that, and got the t-shirt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>So, then, he\u2014yes; he came back\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>I was good at that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Marsha: <\/strong>\u2014from Afghanistan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Everything on this side\u2014the U.S. side\u2014I was horrible at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Over there, I was the <em>man<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>He came back from Afghanistan. I thought, after this year of deployment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I had really gotten pretty close to God during that time\u2014and I began to feel hopeful that, when he came home, things would be different and things would get better. They were for a little while. Then, the drinking came back. Then, there was another situation with a female coworker. It was another situation that was teetering on the edge of going off a cliff. At that point, he was actually gone doing some training in Louisiana. I found this out and called my mom and said: \u201cCan you meet me half way and take the kids?\u00a0 I just need you to take the kids a couple of days,\u201d\u2014which is something that I never ever do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey didn\u2019t know why, but they came and got the kids. I literally rented a carpet cleaner and was standing in my living room cleaning carpets just to get out some aggression and cry. That\u2019s when the FamilyLife radio program came on, and it was the voice Sherry telling her story. I ended up sitting on the floor, sobbing, listening to their story of what God did in their marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s when I knew that I had to find out more, because I was starting to feel like: \u201cEither my life is going to be like this forever,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m going to end up in a divorce. I do <em>not<\/em> want that for us, and I do not want that for these four children that we have brought together.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The person you heard on the radio that day\u2014Sherry Jennings \/ she and her husband Scott\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014their story was one that we spent, I think, three days unpacking on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. It had parallels. Scott was drinking. He had been more than emotionally-unfaithful with his wife. Their marriage had ended up in a divorce. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It wasn\u2019t until Scott, really, hit bottom and realized that he needed Christ that began the turnaround that led to them ultimately reconciling \/ remarrying. By the time we were talking to them, they were leading a marriage ministry at their church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you heard that, what kind of hope did it give you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>For me, it made all the difference; because we had not divorced yet. I just knew that if God could take, literally, a dead marriage that had ended in divorce and turn it into a marriage ministry, then, God could do anything with our marriage too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When did you have a confrontation with your husband about where your relationship was?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>It was a drunk night, where I literally went into my closet. I took my wedding band off, because I was so tired. I took my wedding ring off, and I looked at my hand\u2014I imagined Rusty\u2019s life if we divorced, and I imagined what my life would be like if we divorced. Then, I imagined Jimmy, and Lizzie, and Aaron, and Natalie. I couldn\u2019t find one of those six people whose lives would be better if we divorced. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I put my ring back on my finger; and I think we just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014there was never a big \u201cAha!\u201d moment for us. I know a lot of people look for that\u2014like: \u201cThis happened, and everything changed\u201d; but it was slow, little incremental movements. It started with\u2014we got into some Christian counseling. Then, in February of 2013, we went to our first <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> in Nashville, North Carolina. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You got tricked into that; didn\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Yes. [Laughter]\u00a0 I did <em>not<\/em> want to go. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re still not sure how that happened; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Yes: \u201cI don\u2019t see how <em>this<\/em> happened!\u00a0 How did she sucker me into\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>All weekend!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cgetting me on stage with Dennis Rainey and Bob Lepine?\u201d but I went. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of me went just because I was in trouble, and I had to check the block and do it. There was a part of me, on the inside, that knew that it wasn\u2019t all my fault\u2014actually, none of it was my fault \/ it was all her fault. They were going to say some cool stuff that would give me ammo to fire back at her. I was like: \u201cI\u2019ll beat you at your own game. I\u2019ll show you how much your marriage stuff will do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>\u00a0It was a cool weekend away. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How did that work for you at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>God slapped me a bunch that weekend. Everything up until that point was\u2014and up until recently, really, has been: \u201c<em>I<\/em> didn\u2019t get treated right by my wife,\u201d \u201c<em>I<\/em> didn\u2019t get to have as much sex as I wanted to,\u201d \u201c<em>I<\/em> didn\u2019t get to drink when I wanted to,\u201d \u201c<em>I<\/em> didn\u2019t get to go hunting when I wanted to,\u201d \u201c<em>I<\/em> didn\u2019t get to do this, and I didn\u2019t get to do that.\u201d\u00a0 It occurred to me, one day, that everything I said had <em>I<\/em> in it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>The one big thing we did take away from that <em>Weekend to Remember <\/em>was\u2014we got really excited about <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em>. I don\u2019t know if it was because we were in such a bad place and they knew that or they just weren\u2019t interested, but we didn\u2019t get the reception that we wanted to. We wanted to get three or four couples to go away for a weekend and do <em>Art of Marriage<\/em>. Then, we were going to give it to the masses; and we were excited about that; but nobody really was interested in it. So, that kind of fizzled away and went kind of off to the side. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe kept doing our same dance of getting along for a while. He would have a little sober time for two to three months, and things would seem a little bit better. Then, it would blow up again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>It really never occurred to me during this whole thing\u2014hindsight is 20\/20\u2014the times we would get along would be those sixty to ninety days of sober time, but I never really worked on the underlying problem. The drinking was not my biggest problem. The drinking was a symptom of my biggest problem. My selfishness was my biggest problem\u2014I was putting me before Marsha; I was putting me before God; I was putting me before everything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was doing that because I\u2014working through some of the stuff from Iraq\u2014I mean, I failed to keep that man alive. When you get down to the nitty-gritty stuff\u2014I mean, it\u2019s\u2014I was\u2014on the inside, I was a complete failure. As long as I stayed drunk, then, I was good; and I could deal with that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>And God was working on me throughout all of this; because it\u2019s very easy, when you have a spouse that has <em>big<\/em> flaws that you\u2019re looking at, to really put all that emphasis on that person. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was very confused, like: \u201cHow am I supposed to be this Christian, godly, submissive wife to a husband who is an addict and is not acting like Christ?\u201d I didn\u2019t know where to go in that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAbout six months after we went to <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, Sherry Jennings had been advertising about wanting to do a Bible study about the Laura Doyle book, <em>The Surrendered Wife<\/em>; and that\u2019s very counterintuitive to everything I knew in my heart of how I lived. I was not a surrendered wife\u2014I was a control-freak. If I couldn\u2019t control his drinking, I could control every other aspect of our lives. Finally, I broke down on the 12<sup>th<\/sup> of August that year of 2013 and ordered the book through Amazon\u2014<em>The Surrendered Wife<\/em>. The next day was my 34<sup>th<\/sup> birthday. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut on August 20<sup>th<\/sup>, I actually had a seizure, driving down the road with two of our children in the car. That was quite a terrifying moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I came to, and you realize that your children could have been dead: \u201cWho knows what could have happened?\u201d\u00a0 It was a very scary moment. But what also happens, when you have a seizure driving down the road, is that the state of Tennessee does not like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>And they don\u2019t let you drive for six months. So, here we are\u2014we don\u2019t live in the state with our family. I have four children, and I can\u2019t drive for six months; but the next day in the mail that book, <em>The Surrendered Wife<\/em>, showed up on August 21<sup>st<\/sup>. God had literally made me be still; but it was just God\u2019s perfect timing because I was in a place where I had to start relinquishing some of my control. He was <em>never<\/em> going to be leader of our household as long as I was trying to lead and control everything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, God actually ended up doing some healing between you two\u2014so much so that by 2016, you ultimately did host an <em>Art of Marriage<\/em> weekend for\u2014how many couples?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Sixty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sixty couples. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Sixty couples. [Applause]\u00a0 That\u2019s God!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>Our story could have easily ended in divorce\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>\u2014many, many stops along that timeline. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But it didn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marsha: <\/strong>But it didn\u2019t. That commitment to God, sometimes, was stronger than my commitment to Rusty; because there were times when marriage was really hard. I had to stop leaning on this man to make me happy, because he wasn\u2019t making me happy. I had to get really serious with God that God was the only person that could fix this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty: <\/strong>And that\u2019s the key\u2014God in the middle. That\u2019s the glue that held us together. Like she said, it could have gone so many different directions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you\u2019re really on the line now because you\u2019ve told your story to several hundred thousand people\u2014a lot in your community that are going to hold you accountable to keep on keepin\u2019 on.
