Laura says there have been challenges in their marriage as a result. There have also been a lot of blessings that have come through those challenges.\n\n<strong>Laura: <\/strong>Martin\u2019s disability isn\u2019t the problem in our marriage. Our sin is the problem in our marriage. It\u2019s not that: \u201cIt\u2019s a husband\u2019s job that\u2019s the problem,\u201d or it\u2019s not that: \u201cIt\u2019s the wife\u2019s past.\u201d The problem in our marriage is always our sin. With his disability, there are times that he\u2019ll have to ask me things over and over again. For me, I can either get <em>frustrated<\/em> with that and act out because of my sin, and selfishness, and not wanting to be inconvenienced\u2014or if I truly am living the way that God wants me to\u2014I can see that as an opportunity to serve, and honor, and love my husband five more times.\n\n<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n[Laura singing four lines of <em>Blessings<\/em>]\n\n<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, July 3<sup>rd<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. We\u2019re going to go back in time today for a conversation we had a number of years ago with singer\/songwriter Laura Story. Stay with us.\n\n[Recorded Message]\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. We\u2019re doing a little time travel today. We are going back in time to the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>marriage cruise, which is where we are as we\u2019re recording this program. We have a live studio audience onboard the cruise with us. [Audience cheers] We are at sea.\n\n<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nI got excited about this cruise when we were starting to put the plans together. I got a call in my office one day; and they said, \u201cLaura Story is going on the cruise with us.\u201d I got really excited because, Dennis, I became a Laura Story fan the first time I heard the song <em>Indescribable<\/em>. The reason is because\u2014not only was it a great song, melodically\u2014but it was a theologically-substantive song. They aren\u2019t always theologically-substantive, but you could get your chops into this song. I really liked it. I said, \u201cWho wrote that song?\u201d because Chris Tomlin was singing it. I said, \u201cWho wrote that song?\u201d \u201cLaura Story.\u201d \u201cWho\u2019s Laura Story?\u201d\u2014that\u2019s where the journey began for me.\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That was over\u2014how many years?\u201412 years ago?\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Yes; 12 years ago!\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Long time. So here\u2019s the thing\u2014\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> So, I must have been like\u2014\n\n<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Fourteen.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> \u201414 when I\u2014[Laughter]\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I have never done this. We\u2019ve been doing radio, now\u2014Bob and I\u2014for 21 years.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Oh, no. I\u2019m scared. [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes. You should be.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Me too!\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You said \u201cYes,\u201d to being on our broadcast.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> I know.\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to ask you to sing that song for us, right now\u2014<em>Indescribable. <\/em>[Applause]\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Jump up.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Let\u2019s do it! And if anyone in our live studio audience happens to know it, I\u2019m\u2014\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wait, wait. If anybody doesn\u2019t know it, we need to witness to you because I think you have to sing this at your baptism today; right?\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Oh, y\u2019all are so kind. I\u2019m a worship leader\u2014so, I\u2019m always more comfortable when you\u2019re singing with me than when I\u2019m just singing at you. So, feel free to join me.\n\n[Laura sings <em>Indescribable<\/em>]\n\n<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Amen. Isn\u2019t that great? [Applause]\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Thank you, guys.\n\n<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, Laura\u2014tell us how you met your husband, Martin.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Well, we met in high school. We\u2019re high school sweethearts. [Applause]\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Yes. We met\u2014this is kind of funny. We met at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes event that I still, to this very day, am not entirely sure why I was attending this event.\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How long did you date?\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> We dated for maybe two or three years, and then were just good friends for about seven years, and then got back together and got married.\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh now, wait.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, wait.\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wait, wait; wait.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> I know it\u2019s kind of weird.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What happened three years in?\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Well, so, I was a Christian at the time.\n\nMartin grew up in the church and would have told you he was a Christian. By the time I got to college, I got very involved with a couple of ministries at school and met some Christian men. Their relationship with God\u2014it wasn\u2019t just one of the parts of their life\u2014it was the central piece in their life.\n\n<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nI began to talk with Martin about this, and it was really clear that he didn\u2019t really understand that. So, we broke up because of just some convictions. Then, about a year later, he became a Christian; and he said, \u201cAll of it makes sense now.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> And it wasn\u2019t: \u201cHey, I\u2019m a Christian now. Let\u2019s get back together.\u201d It was just us\u2014we would see each other every three, four, five months and just talk about what the Lord was doing in our lives. It was really a neat thing.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, seven years later, what happened?\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Seven years later\u2014the short version was\u2014he came to me and said, \u201cI really think you\u2019re the person I want to be with the rest of my life.\u201d I said, \u201cWell, I\u2019m just not sure.\u201d\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nHe said, \u201cOkay, well, then, let\u2019s take a break.\u201d So, after about three months of the break, I was just desperate. I showed up at his house; and I said, \u201cYes, yes!\u201d He was like: \u201cWhat? What? I\u2019m not asking anything,\u201d [Laughter] \u201ccrazy woman!\u201d\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, you proposed to him?\n\n<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Basically, yes\u2014pretty much. [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Way to go!\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> I know\u2014a little bit unconventional.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You guys went through a really challenging season. Tell the listeners about that.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Yes. We have. About eight years ago, Martin was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He went through a couple different surgeries and lives today with a brain injury. I think anyone who has either done life with a disability\u2014mental or physical\u2014or has done life with someone with a disability\u2014knows that it\u2019s just a tough road.\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nMarriage is hard anyway. I think that marriage, plus disability\u2014it definitely teaches you to rely on the Lord.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you got that diagnosis, take us to that moment when you found out he had a brain tumor.\n\n<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Yes\u2014it was\u2014we got married. Probably, within four or five months, we started seeing symptoms\u2014him being lethargic. He never had headaches or anything. So, we never thought, \u201cTumor.\u201d We just thought, \u201cMaybe, some sort of infection or something.\u201d And then, after going to see different doctors for maybe 9\/12 months, we found out that he had the tumor.\n\nThis is kind of funny\u2014we were meeting with the doctor. The doctor said: \u201cMartin has to have surgery. It\u2019s possible that when he comes out of the surgery that he won\u2019t remember who you are.\u201d I remember thinking about how heartbreaking that would be. Sure enough\u2014we come out of surgery\u2014and as soon as he sees me, he says, \u201cLaura Story!\u201d I thought, \u201cOh, he remembers me!\u201d\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nAnd then he said, \u201cWhat are <em>you<\/em> doing here?\u201d I could tell that he knew exactly who I was, but he had no idea that we were married\u2014which is really weird news to tell somebody! So, I finally got around to breaking this news to him. His response was: \u201cWe\u2019re married? Yes!\u201d\n\n<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\n[Laughter] Which is really the best way something like that could go down\u2014if you ever find yourself in that situation\u2014of telling your spouse they\u2019re your spouse.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What are his disabilities today?\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Oh, gracious. Well, he has a short-term memory deficit. He has some balance issues. He only has 50 percent of his vision\u2014has trouble\u2014kind of a time-conception deficit trouble. He had damage to his hypothalamus\u2014so, he has trouble sensing hot and cold, or full\/hungry, thirsty\u2014things like that.\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nBrain injuries are so funny because sometimes there\u2019s one area that isn\u2019t affected at all. As far as his cognitive ability\u2014he\u2019s still there. He\u2019s still the same person he\u2019s always been. But on the other side\u2014with the memory\u2014it really is kind of interesting. Hopefully, you\u2019ll get to meet him\u2014he\u2019s here this week. You can have a conversation with him and he seems just fine.\n\n<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> As a husband, there\u2019s this\u2014it\u2019s built into us to want to provide, protect, take care of\u2014to do all the things a husband is supposed to do. Is he able to embrace that and be that for you?\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> I think it depends on what your definition of: \u201cThe husband being the leader.\u201d For me, he\u2019s the spiritual leader of our family because he is the lead pray-er. He\u2019s the lead repent-er. He is far more spiritual than I will ever be.\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nHe doesn\u2019t <em>provide<\/em> for us financially; but in some ways, I wonder whether <em>I<\/em> really do. I feel like to write songs and to get checks in the mail\u2014that\u2019s really <em>God<\/em> providing for us. I truly see Him as our Provider. [Applause] Yes.\n\n<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\nMartin is a great, great man; and no disability\u2014it\u2019s funny\u2014this is kind of related. I think, for a while, disability really is <em>very<\/em> tough in a marriage. Anyone who\u2019s been through that, even if it\u2019s a short-term thing, knows that it\u2019s just hard. For a while, we really saw it as being, \u201cThat\u2019s the problem in our marriage.\u201d\n\nFor me, I guess it was a couple years ago when I realized that Martin\u2019s disability isn\u2019t the problem in our marriage. Our sin is the problem in our marriage. It\u2019s not that: \u201cIt\u2019s the husband\u2019s job that\u2019s the problem,\u201d or it\u2019s not that: \u201cIt\u2019s the wife\u2019s past\u201d\u2014it\u2019s not things like that. The problem in our marriage is always our sin.\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> With his disability, there are times that he\u2019ll have to ask me things over and over again. The question is: \u201cDo we deal with those challenges in a God-honoring way or in a selfish way?\u201d\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. And people have disabilities\u2014and they have limps you can see\u2014some have disabilities and limps you can\u2019t see. But all of those were meant to be, I think, used in our lives to bless us. You think that, as well, because you wrote a song that ultimately went on\u2014\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh, that was smooth the way you did that. I just picked up\u2014you were segueing right into her song. That is\u2014\n\n<strong>Laura: <\/strong>You must be a professional! [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve done this before; haven\u2019t you? [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, all I know is she won the Grammy for the Best Christian Contemporary Song. It\u2019s entitled <em>Blessings. <\/em>[Applause]\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, would you sing it for us?\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> I would love that. Thank you.\n\n[Laura singing <em>Blessings<\/em>]\n\n<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\n<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\n<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\n<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\n<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n[Applause]\n\n<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, thank you for using your gifts to honor God and for suffering well. When you get married, you don\u2019t get married to go through what you\u2019ve been through; but when we pledge, \u201c\u2026in sickness and in health,\u201d it\u2019s a covenant. I admire your keeping your covenant, and caring for your husband, and writing about it to give others hope and encouragement to do the same.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> I think a lot of times people feel like God blesses us when He gives us that health, wealth and prosperity. I think that a couple really learns to be a couple when they walk through suffering\u2014whether it\u2019s a loss of a child, whether it\u2019s job loss, whether it\u2019s an illness. I almost feel like there\u2019s a blessing that they\u2019re missing.\n\nFor us\u2014and sometimes, I think we didn\u2019t even know what it meant to be married until just a few years ago. We thought it was this thing that the two of us did together\u2014which, yes, I guess that it is\u2014but it\u2019s this thing that God really does in us, and He\u2019s that glue.\n\n<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\nIt\u2019s not just Martin, and I, and God\u2014it\u2019s also, God never created marriage to exist apart from your local church. I believe that two people aren\u2019t enough to hold a marriage together. I think it\u2019s the church coming around you to encourage you\u2014to give you resources. Churches that are okay with you coming to them, saying, \u201cHey, we need\n\nhelp,\u201d\u2014that they\u2019re not going to point at you and think that you\u2019re a bad person.\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nWe\u2019ve had a <em>hard<\/em> road that we\u2019ve walked; but man, we have seen God bless us in some ways\u2014even if it was just showing us how <em>deeply<\/em> we need God \/ how deeply we need Jesus, at the very core of our marriage, every single day.\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We do. We do.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Would you thank Laura Story? Laura says there have been challenges in their marriage as a result. There have also been a lot of blessings that have come through those challenges.\n\n<strong>Laura: <\/strong>Martin\u2019s disability isn\u2019t the problem in our marriage. Our sin is the problem in our marriage. It\u2019s not that: \u201cIt\u2019s a husband\u2019s job that\u2019s the problem,\u201d or it\u2019s not that: \u201cIt\u2019s the wife\u2019s past.\u201d The problem in our marriage is always our sin. With his disability, there are times that he\u2019ll have to ask me things over and over again. For me, I can either get <em>frustrated<\/em> with that and act out because of my sin, and selfishness, and not wanting to be inconvenienced\u2014or if I truly am living the way that God wants me to\u2014I can see that as an opportunity to serve, and honor, and love my husband five more times.\n\n<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n[Laura singing four lines of <em>Blessings<\/em>]\n\n<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, July 3<sup>rd<\/sup>. We\u2019re going to go back in time today for a conversation we had a number of years ago with singer\/songwriter Laura Story. Stay with us.\n\n[Recorded Message]\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. We\u2019re doing a little time travel today. We are going back in time to the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>marriage cruise, which is where we are as we\u2019re recording this program. We have a live studio audience onboard the cruise with us. [Audience cheers] We are at sea.\n\n<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nI got excited about this cruise when we were starting to put the plans together. I got a call in my office one day; and they said, \u201cLaura Story is going on the cruise with us.\u201d I got really excited because, Dennis, I became a Laura Story fan the first time I heard the song <em>Indescribable<\/em>. The reason is because\u2014not only was it a great song, melodically\u2014but it was a theologically-substantive song. They aren\u2019t always theologically-substantive, but you could get your chops into this song. I really liked it. I said, \u201cWho wrote that song?\u201d because Chris Tomlin was singing it. I said, \u201cWho wrote that song?\u201d \u201cLaura Story.\u201d \u201cWho\u2019s Laura Story?\u201d\u2014that\u2019s where the journey began for me.\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That was over\u2014how many years?\u201412 years ago?\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Yes; 12 years ago!\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Long time. So here\u2019s the thing\u2014\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> So, I must have been like\u2014\n\n<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Fourteen.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> \u201414 when I\u2014[Laughter]\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I have never done this. We\u2019ve been doing radio, now\u2014Bob and I\u2014for 21 years.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Oh, no. I\u2019m scared. [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes. You should be.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Me too!\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You said \u201cYes,\u201d to being on our broadcast.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> I know.\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to ask you to sing that song for us, right now\u2014<em>Indescribable. <\/em>[Applause]\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Jump up.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Let\u2019s do it! If anybody doesn\u2019t know it, we need to witness to you because I think you have to sing this at your baptism today; right?\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Oh, y\u2019all are so kind. I\u2019m a worship leader\u2014so, I\u2019m always more comfortable when you\u2019re singing with me than when I\u2019m just singing at you. So, feel free to join me.\n\n[Laura sings <em>Indescribable<\/em>]\n\n<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Amen. Isn\u2019t that great? [Applause]\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Thank you, guys.\n\n<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, Laura\u2014tell us how you met your husband, Martin.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Well, we met in high school. We\u2019re high school sweethearts. [Applause]\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Yes. We met\u2014this is kind of funny. We met at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes event that I still, to this very day, am not entirely sure why I was attending this event.\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How long did you date?\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> We dated for maybe two or three years, and then were just good friends for about seven years, and then got back together and got married.\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh now, wait.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, wait.\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wait, wait; wait.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> I know it\u2019s kind of weird.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What happened three years in?\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Well, so, I was a Christian at the time.\n\nMartin grew up in the church and would have told you he was a Christian. By the time I got to college, I got very involved with a couple of ministries at school and met some Christian men. Their relationship with God\u2014it wasn\u2019t just one of the parts of their life\u2014it was the central piece in their life.\n\n<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nI began to talk with Martin about this, and it was really clear that he didn\u2019t really understand that. So, we broke up because of just some convictions. Then, about a year later, he became a Christian; and he said, \u201cAll of it makes sense now.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> And it wasn\u2019t: \u201cHey, I\u2019m a Christian now. Let\u2019s get back together.\u201d It was just us\u2014we would see each other every three, four, five months and just talk about what the Lord was doing in our lives. It was really a neat thing.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, seven years later, what happened?\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Seven years later\u2014the short version was\u2014he came to me and said, \u201cI really think you\u2019re the person I want to be with the rest of my life.\u201d I said, \u201cWell, I\u2019m just not sure.\u201d\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nHe said, \u201cOkay, well, then, let\u2019s take a break.\u201d So, after about three months of the break, I was just desperate. I showed up at his house; and I said, \u201cYes, yes!\u201d He was like: \u201cWhat? What? I\u2019m not asking anything,\u201d [Laughter] \u201ccrazy woman!\u201d\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, you proposed to him?\n\n<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Basically, yes\u2014pretty much. [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Way to go!\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> I know\u2014a little bit unconventional.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You guys went through a really challenging season. Tell the listeners about that.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Yes. We have. About eight years ago, Martin was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He went through a couple different surgeries and lives today with a brain injury. I think anyone who has either done life with a disability\u2014mental or physical\u2014or has done life with someone with a disability\u2014knows that it\u2019s just a tough road.\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nMarriage is hard anyway. I think that marriage, plus disability\u2014it definitely teaches you to rely on the Lord.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you got that diagnosis, take us to that moment when you found out he had a brain tumor.\n\n<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Yes\u2014it was\u2014we got married. Probably, within four or five months, we started seeing symptoms\u2014him being lethargic. He never had headaches or anything. So, we never thought, \u201cTumor.\u201d We just thought, \u201cMaybe, some sort of infection or something.\u201d And then, after going to see different doctors for maybe 9\/12 months, we found out that he had the tumor.\n\nThis is kind of funny\u2014we were meeting with the doctor. The doctor said: \u201cMartin has to have surgery. It\u2019s possible that when he comes out of the surgery that he won\u2019t remember who you are.\u201d I remember thinking about how heartbreaking that would be. Sure enough\u2014we come out of surgery\u2014and as soon as he sees me, he says, \u201cLaura Story!\u201d I thought, \u201cOh, he remembers me!\u201d\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nAnd then he said, \u201cWhat are <em>you<\/em> doing here?\u201d I could tell that he knew exactly who I was, but he had no idea that we were married\u2014which is really weird news to tell somebody! So, I finally got around to breaking this news to him. His response was: \u201cWe\u2019re married? Yes!\u201d\n\n<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\n[Laughter] Which is really the best way something like that could go down\u2014if you ever find yourself in that situation\u2014of telling your spouse they\u2019re your spouse.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What are his disabilities today?\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Oh, gracious. Well, he has a short-term memory deficit. He has some balance issues. He only has 50 percent of his vision\u2014has trouble\u2014kind of a time-conception deficit trouble. He had damage to his hypothalamus\u2014so, he has trouble sensing hot and cold, or full\/hungry, thirsty\u2014things like that.\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nBrain injuries are so funny because sometimes there\u2019s one area that isn\u2019t affected at all. As far as his cognitive ability\u2014he\u2019s still there. He\u2019s still the same person he\u2019s always been. But on the other side\u2014with the memory\u2014it really is kind of interesting. Hopefully, you\u2019ll get to meet him\u2014he\u2019s here this week. You can have a conversation with him and he seems just fine.\n\n<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> As a husband, there\u2019s this\u2014it\u2019s built into us to want to provide, protect, take care of\u2014to do all the things a husband is supposed to do. Is he able to embrace that and be that for you?\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> I think it depends on what your definition of: \u201cThe husband being the leader.\u201d For me, he\u2019s the spiritual leader of our family because he is the lead pray-er. He\u2019s the lead repent-er. He is far more spiritual than I will ever be.\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nHe doesn\u2019t <em>provide<\/em> for us financially; but in some ways, I wonder whether <em>I<\/em> really do. I feel like to write songs and to get checks in the mail\u2014that\u2019s really <em>God<\/em> providing for us. I truly see Him as our Provider. [Applause] Yes.\n\n<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\nMartin is a great, great man; and no disability\u2014it\u2019s funny\u2014this is kind of related. I think, for a while, disability really is <em>very<\/em> tough in a marriage. Anyone who\u2019s been through that, even if it\u2019s a short-term thing, knows that it\u2019s just hard. For a while, we really saw it as being, \u201cThat\u2019s the problem in our marriage.\u201d\n\nFor me, I guess it was a couple years ago when I realized that Martin\u2019s disability isn\u2019t the problem in our marriage. Our sin is the problem in our marriage. It\u2019s not that: \u201cIt\u2019s the husband\u2019s job that\u2019s the problem,\u201d or it\u2019s not that: \u201cIt\u2019s the wife\u2019s past\u201d\u2014it\u2019s not things like that. The problem in our marriage is always our sin.\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> With his disability, there are times that he\u2019ll have to ask me things over and over again. The question is: \u201cDo we deal with those challenges in a God-honoring way or in a selfish way?\u201d\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. And people have disabilities\u2014and they have limps you can see\u2014some have disabilities and limps you can\u2019t see. But all of those were meant to be, I think, used in our lives to bless us. You think that, as well, because you wrote a song that ultimately went on\u2014\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh, that was smooth the way you did that. I just picked up\u2014you were segueing right into her song. That is\u2014\n\n<strong>Laura: <\/strong>You must be a professional! [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve done this before; haven\u2019t you? [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, all I know is she won the Grammy for the Best Christian Contemporary Song. It\u2019s entitled <em>Blessings. <\/em>[Applause]\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, would you sing it for us?\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> I would love that. When you get married, you don\u2019t get married to go through what you\u2019ve been through; but when we pledge, \u201c\u2026in sickness and in health,\u201d it\u2019s a covenant. I admire your keeping your covenant, and caring for your husband, and writing about it to give others hope and encouragement to do the same.\n\n<strong>Laura:<\/strong> I think a lot of times people feel like God blesses us when He gives us that health, wealth and prosperity. I think that a couple really learns to be a couple when they walk through suffering\u2014whether it\u2019s a loss of a child, whether it\u2019s job loss, whether it\u2019s an illness. I almost feel like there\u2019s a blessing that they\u2019re missing.\n\nFor us\u2014and sometimes, I think we didn\u2019t even know what it meant to be married until just a few years ago. We thought it was this thing that the two of us did together\u2014which, yes, I guess that it is\u2014but it\u2019s this thing that God really does in us, and He\u2019s that glue.\n\n<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\nIt\u2019s not just Martin, and I, and God\u2014it\u2019s also, God never created marriage to exist apart from your local church. I believe that two people aren\u2019t enough to hold a marriage together. I think it\u2019s the church coming around you to encourage you\u2014to give you resources. Churches that are okay with you coming to them, saying, \u201cHey, we need\n\nhelp,\u201d\u2014that they\u2019re not going to point at you and think that you\u2019re a bad person.\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nWe\u2019ve had a <em>hard<\/em> road that we\u2019ve walked; but man, we have seen God bless us in some ways\u2014even if it was just showing us how <em>deeply<\/em> we need God \/ how deeply we need Jesus, at the very core of our marriage, every single day.\n\n<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We do. We do.\n\n<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Would you thank Laura Story?
