The real lie there is that God has forgotten about me; or I have missed God\u2019s plan\u2014God\u2019s perfect plan\u2014and I\u2019m living some weird parallel strategy or some weird parallel life to what I could have been or should have been\u2014or whatever. Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know we will occasionally hear from men who have been listening to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>; and they\u2019ve been listening to programs we\u2019ve done where we\u2019ve been challenging husbands and dads to step up and to embrace their responsibilities and to act like men and to get in the game. And I get the emails\u2014you see them as well\u2014from guys who say, \u201cWhy are you guys always beating up on us? Why are you going after us all the time?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, we\u2019re not beating up on them. We put our arms around the guy and say, \u201cLet\u2019s go, and just keep stepping up.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And maybe, we do it with a little more locker room, you know, fervor; but today, we\u2019re turning the tables, and we\u2019re going to be giving an exhortative challenge\u2014a gentle challenge, I hope\u2014to the wives that\u2014they have responsibilities in marriage to be all that God has called them to be as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They do, Bob. You remember a number of years ago we used to do a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014radio program called <em>Mom Check<\/em>?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We would call moms in the middle of their day and say, \u201cTell us what your kitchen looks like.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell us what real life looks like at your house.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What does your living room look like? What are you doing right now? And we found some great moms. We found some great moms who were in the middle of a mess with their kids\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014having fun.\u00a0 Their tanks weren\u2019t empty, but you could hear them getting drained because of the kids. But we\u2019ve got a mom here who just cheered. She kind of gave two thumbs up. Becky Thompson joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Becky, welcome back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Becky:<\/strong> Thanks so much, again, for having me. It\u2019s an honor to be with you both.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Becky has a little blog called Scissortail SILK.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, it\u2019s at BeckyThompson.com; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you can also find it that way, though; can\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> You can. In this, she confronted a time when she realized she was not doing a good job of loving her husband.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGuess who taught her? Guess who exhorted her? Not her husband.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But your daddy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I just have to tell you\u2014you\u2019re a smart young lady to listen to your dad.\u00a0 I\u2019m not saying that because I\u2019m an older daddy.\u00a0 [Laughter] I\u2019m really not.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But he is hoping that some of his daughters are listening\u2014[Laughter]\u2014to today\u2019s program. I want to know how you and Jared met because this was not your plan to marry Jared when you were 19 years old; was it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> It was not my plan\u2014no, sir. No, I intended to be in full-time ministry, married to a pastor of a church somewhere.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t know which church\u2014didn\u2019t know which pastor. It was just who\u2014that part the Lord could choose freely, but the part that I was kind of focusing in on is that I would be a pastor\u2019s wife. That was my intention.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You had grown up\u2014your dad was a pastor. So, it\u2019s really\u2014it\u2019s kind of sweet that what you had seen was what you wanted and what you aspired to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> I wanted a life full of ministry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s sometimes rare for a pastor\u2019s kid\u2014to want to step back into that role\u2014but it had worked, and I had seen the good fruit from it. That\u2019s what I wanted.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I went to Bible college. I went to Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma; and I was there for my MRS Degree\u2014I was. I was looking for a husband\u2014for a spouse. So, when I walked in and they said, \u201cWhat do you want to major in?\u201d I actually said, \u201cWell, where do the pastors\u2014where are the pastors? If you wanted to be a pastor, what classes would you take?\u201d And I ended up majoring in\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it wasn\u2019t just\u2014let\u2019s make sure the audience gets this. It wasn\u2019t because you wanted to be a pastor.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> No, sir.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You wanted to be a pastor\u2019s wife.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> I was just hoping to sit at their table at lunch and meet one. So, walked in\u2014ended up majoring in Communications and minoring in Pastoral Care\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Of course.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> \u2014which incidentally does not mean caring for the pastor.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> So, after my first year of school at Oral Roberts, I went home for the summer having not met a pastor-husband.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, I would think there are lots of guys there. You couldn\u2019t find one?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> I found a few. I found a few.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you propose to some of them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Not on the first day.\u00a0 [Laughter] So, I didn\u2019t find anybody that year.\u00a0 I was also\u2014in sincerity, I was following the Lord and listening to His plan for my life and taking good classes and doing all of that; but my parents had moved to Norman, Oklahoma, which is not where I had grown up and not where the university was. So, I didn\u2019t have any friends when I moved home to stay with them until the next year began.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I went and got a job at the mall, and I thought, \u201cThis will just be something simple that can occupy my time.\u201d I wish I could say I had just done missions or something really respectful.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What store\u2014what store were you working in?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> So, here\u2019s the interesting thing\u2014I ended up working at a kiosk. So, you know, the things where they do the nail things.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That was you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> That was not quite me. So, they shipped clothes in from L.A., and this was sort of before pop-up boutiques and things like that. So, it was a cart that was in the middle of the mall with a stool and some clothes hanging on there outside of it. I thought, \u201cI will sit there on that stool, and I will sell\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cglitter fashion belts and read my Bible. I can handle that. That\u2019s an easy summer for me.\u201d What I was not anticipating was the cute boy who worked at the shoe store behind my cart, and that\u2019s how I met my husband.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the funny thing is I really thought that at the end of the story\u2014you know, as I fall in love with this guy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, we can\u2019t go there. Did you go up and say, \u201cHello, cute boy?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> No, so, I actually asked him to watch my cart while I took a restroom break; and I bought him a cookie on the way back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Six months later, he bought me an engagement ring.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh! So, you flirted a little bit?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> I did a little. No, here\u2019s the thing\u2014I had every intention of just saving him. I was not going to date him.\u00a0 I was just going to help him meet Jesus\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> \u2014get his life on a good track\u2014because from conversations, I knew he wasn\u2019t walking with the Lord\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> \u2014like he needed to. So, that was my plan, but I accidentally fell in love with him in the process. It was pure accident.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let\u2019s stop you right there.\u00a0 Was he a believer at the time?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> He was a believer, but he was not walking with the Lord.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, he knew who Jesus was. He knew that he was his Savior, but he was not making Him Lord or his life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you were skating on some thin ice at that point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> I do not recommend to anyone listening to do what\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s called missionary dating.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> It is.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t mean to do it, but I did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But you fell in love.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> This is why we don\u2019t missionary date.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, what got his attention spiritually speaking besides a beautiful young lady?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Well, spiritually speaking, he encountered the presence of God.\u00a0 He encountered the truth of who God was for him. There was such a transformation in just those few three months. Over the summer, he rededicated his heart to the Lord; he was re-baptized; and just experienced God for himself\u2014got to know the Lord on a personal level.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut at the end of the summer, he wrote me this letter, he said, \u201cI will be first in line when your something special happens. I will be first in line when God reveals to you whatever this big thing is that you\u2019re after, and I will be there to champion you on; but I know\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cit won\u2019t be as your partner. I\u2019m releasing you\u201d\u2014basically\u2014\u201cback to live the life that God has called you to live.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the end of the summer, I went back to Oral Roberts University, continued on my track of Communications degree, and all of that. It was just about a month into school that the school hosted this campus-wide worship service; and I got a text message from Jared saying, \u201cI\u2019d like to come to that. I heard that that was happening. I\u2019d like to be there.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd in this service, he had this encounter with the Lord, and he was\u2014well, I\u2019ve got some things I joke about\u2014but he was crying on his knees and just sobbing, with the tears, and just this beautiful moment of complete surrender before God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wish that I could say that standing next to him in this worship service I put my hand on his shoulder and just prayed that God would release him into whatever it was that he had for him; but the reality is I stepped away to make sure that all the pastors in the room didn\u2019t think we were dating. And that\u2019s the truth of what happened. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCan you imagine? Can you imagine?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was so certain that my life would look a certain way. I was so certain that I would be in the type of ministry that I had planned. I was so focused on that goal that I almost missed this moment.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, what brought you from that focus\u2014\u201cI know where the future is, and I know the plans I have for me,\u201d says Becky\u2014what brought you from that moment to the place where you said, \u201cI think God has me on a different path?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Well, I heard the voice of the Lord\u2014a voice that I have felt in my spirit many times. He says, \u201cThis is your husband.\u201d\u00a0 It was just a few months later, and Jared began to sort of pursue me and really pursue me\u2014asked my dad\u2019s permission to just sort of date and court and spend more time with me, focused on relationship.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the back of my heart, this is what I believed\u2014\u201cThis guy has no idea that, at the end of this story, he is a pastor.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was so certain that, because I was going to be a pastor\u2019s wife and because God said, \u201cMarry him,\u201d that at the end of this whole thing, this guy is going to be a pastor. Really, that\u2019s not the story of our lives. That\u2019s not what happened.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, just a few years into our marriage, I had this honest moment where I looked around and I realized, \u201cDid I miss it? Did I marry the wrong guy, or do I need to just submit to the Lord and listen for who He is really calling me to be\u2014what our lives are really supposed to look like?\u201d So, I had a lot of very unrealistic expectations at the beginning of our marriage that I had to sort through before anything else could really go forward between my husband and me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Some people who are listening right now are right where you were\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Sure.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014kind of stuck in\u2014\u201cI thought life would work out this way. It\u2019s worked out a different way, and it\u2019s not what I\u2019ve longed for all my life.\u201d There\u2019s just kind of a lingering depression.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, what\u2019s your counsel to somebody\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014who is facing that reality of\u2014\u201cMy life is not turning out the way I thought it was going to turn out, and this is kind of lonely and disappointing?\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> That\u2019s a very heavy place to be; and it\u2019s actually something I addressed in my first book, <em>Hope Unfolding<\/em>, where I looked at some of the lies that I think are very common throughout all of womanhood\u2014which is\u2014\u201cMy life is not turning out like I imagined.\u00a0 What do I do about it now?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe real lie there is that God has forgotten about me; or I have missed God\u2019s plan\u2014God\u2019s perfect plan\u2014and I\u2019m living some weird parallel strategy or some weird parallel life to what I could have been or should have been\u2014or whatever. How do I rectify my expectations with my realities?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I found, in my own heart and my own walk, was when I surrendered these thoughts before the Lord and was honest about them, the truth of who God is, is always the answer. And the truth for them is that God has not forgotten about them. There is no Plan B life. There is no Plan B circumstance.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is no alternative that could have been that would have been better. We have the lives that we\u2019re currently in, and the best answer is inviting the Lord to be in that moment with us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He can handle the reality of you spilling your guts out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> He can.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s not going to crush God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> It\u2019s not. You know, He\u2019s not surprised. I think, for me, it was realizing that God was not surprised that I was living in Northwest Oklahoma married to a pipeline welder.\u00a0 God was not like\u2014\u201cWell, what are we going to do about this?! This really didn\u2019t turn out the way we thought we were going here?\u201d He is fully invested in each intimate detail of our lives.\u00a0 <br><br>There is this thread of His presence that weaves through every moment of our lives. I believe that there is this thread of His presence where we can look and we can see exactly where He was. And I could see where He was in the leading up to marrying my husband. I could see where He was in the years before, as He prepared\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014my heart to lead others to love His ministry, to love being in His presence.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut when I got to that moment, I had to look for the string of His presence that was still there. The thing that would lead me out of those moments of desperation and uncertainty\u2014what was going to take me out? That was that God was not surprised by it. Therefore, God must have strategy and goodness in it. If God is not surprised by our current circumstances, then, He has everything that we need for that circumstance.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd for a lot of us, it\u2019s just hope that someday it might not look the way it does\u2014hope that our husbands who have gone off and they\u2019re not living for the Lord are reconciled back into a relationship with the living God; you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think you\u2019ve hit on a key point because even when you\u2019re in a moment where you don\u2019t see that hope to know\u2014\u201cGod\u2019s here. He\u2019s with me. This has not taking Him by surprise.\u00a0 He\u2019s not going\u2014\u2018I don\u2019t have any answers here.\u2019\u201d He\u2019s right there, and He has\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014a purpose for that moment. When we can say, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m ready for that purpose. I\u2019m ready to walk the path that You\u2019re on with me to get me where You want me to go,\u201d that\u2019s the beginning of the transformation that God will often do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Exactly, that\u2019s the beginning of the hope. That\u2019s the hope unfolding.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And that\u2019s where He wants to take every person\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Exactly.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014not just try to change your circumstances or find some mythical love. And that really, ultimately, led you to write this book\u2014this second book\u2014<em>Love Unending<\/em>, which is really a 21-day\u2014not experiment, but more of a spiritual discipline and intentionality of expressing love to your husband just because of coming out of these doldrums that can hit marriages.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I have to ask you about one\u2014because there was a time\u2014when you were dating Jared, wasn\u2019t there a time when he was coming to pick you up and he tried to call and couldn\u2019t get you for some reason?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What\u2019s that story?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> So, the story is that I was living in Tulsa at the time and he was still down in Norman; and he would\u2014he drove. He came all the way up the night before,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Two hours.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> \u2014and he stayed at a friend\u2019s house. He was going to pick me up in my dorm room; and you know men are not allowed passed the front desk; and he didn\u2019t know any of my friends. So, the only way he had to get ahold of me the morning he came to pick me up was my cellphone. That\u2019s the only number he had.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, he starts calling my cellphone, and I don\u2019t answer because I can sleep through just about anything\u2014I mean, at that point, before I became a mom. So, I mean I\u2019d slept through until noon when I woke up; and I had all of these missed calls.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy husband had driven back to Yukon, where we\u2019re going to church on the weekends, without me. He had left me. He gets there, and he has to tell my mom\u2014\u201cShe didn\u2019t wake up.\u00a0 I\u2019m really worried, but I didn\u2019t want you to think that we just weren\u2019t coming.\u00a0 So, I came all the way by myself.\u201d I\u2019m not sure exactly what story he tried to come up with; but I know that my mom just said, \u201cShe can sleep through anything.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> \u201cShe can sleep through anything.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the principle in that is that before we become moms, we might have some ways that we handle certain situations, like sleeping heavily; but once we become moms, we just wake up. We can hear potato chips opening in a back closet over a television and a dishwasher going\u2014when the kids are going to have a snack, and you\u2019re thinking, \u201cClose those bags. I\u2019m making dinner.\u201d You can hear the television click on\u2014that little static noise it makes when someone is trying to have a little more screen time, and you\u2019ve said, \u201cNo.\u201d As moms, our hearing changes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you know as a wife, because there is always so much noise going on, we learn how to be selective with our hearing. We learn how to listen for what\u2019s important and tune out all the rest of the chaos that is just non-stop; but sometimes, we tune our husbands out as well. We tune our husbands out with all the other noise and never really find good moments to tune in until we realize there is all this space and we\u2019re disengaged and\u2014\u201cHow do we come back together where we\u2019re openly sharing our hearts?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSometimes, my mind needs space like my body needs space. You know kids in my lap all the time. So, I push my husband out with everybody else; but we have to, as we look at these strategies, go back to the beginning. As we look at what it was like in the beginning, you know, we spent hours together just talking and sharing and openly discussing what was on our hearts.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd as wives, we have to make sure we are creating that space again for our husbands to share if they want to. I know not all husbands share openly. My husband is pretty reserved; but when he does open up, I have to make sure I\u2019m not\u2014\u201cJust a second. Let me open this for the kids,\u201d or \u201cJust a second. Let me do this for the children.\u201d I have to tell my kids\u2014\u201cMommy and Daddy are talking\u201d\u2014and realize the priority that our marriage needs to take in those moments.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know that\u2019s the truth of <em>Love Unending<\/em> is that there aren\u2019t these big, grand things that up. There are just these small ways that we have to say, \u201cHusband, I see you. You matter, and I want to show you that I\u2019m invested and being intentional with us.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m picturing your two worlds coming together\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014a mommy with three kids, six and under, and a pipe-fitter from an oil rig\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014in Western Oklahoma. That\u2019s a different environment out there\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Exactly.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014what he\u2019s dealing with every day. He\u2019s coming home to these little chirping, open mouths that you\u2019ve been herding all day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And he\u2019s wanting a real relationship with a real adult\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014wife\u2014his wife.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> No matter what worlds we\u2019re coming from\u2014whether our world where he\u2019s welding pipe together and doing back breaking work in the blistering heat and I\u2019m just trying to keep three kids alive, which seems just as important most days and exhausting most days\u2014you know we come together, and we just collapse; but we have to make sure we\u2019re collapsing into each other. We have to make sure we\u2019re collapsing together and not just away\u2014not separating.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen those worlds come back together and collide, there has to be a space for us no matter what that looks like.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re really calling wives\u2014moms\u2014back to what they promised when they got married. It was the pledge to love, honor, and cherish\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u2018til death do us part.\u00a0 And that loving, honoring, cherishing, paying attention is hard work. In staff meeting here recently, Bob and I watched a video from a couple whose marriage\u2014young marriage\u2014probably younger than yours\u2014maybe 5 \/ 6 years married\u2014sounded like it was nearly over. They were struggling with each other, weren\u2019t meeting one another\u2019s need. They had to go back to the beginning\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Becky:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014to their promise and start building from that promise; but they went to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> marriage getaway and got some training at that point to be able to equip them to make good on that pledge and promise. I don\u2019t think people get married to be isolated. They get married to be one; but they need practical tools to be able to do that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In fact, one of the things we hear most often from people who have attended a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> getaway is that they leave the weekend having received some very practical counsel on things that they can do better in their marriage. There are \u201cAha\u201d moments where they go\u2014\u201cOh, I never thought of that.\u00a0 I guess if I did that\u2026. I guess if this happened\u2026. Oh, maybe, if I spoke that way\u2026. Maybe, if we resolved conflict this way\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd they leave with a sense of hope that\u2014\u201cNow, my marriage can be a different marriage.\u201d And when you\u2019ve got help and you\u2019ve got hope, you\u2019ve got the plans for a different marriage than the one you came in with.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.
