And, by the way, there are those who don\u2019t feel guilty about something that they should feel guilty about. So the conscience has to be informed by Scripture. There is development, and there is a way in which the conscience can be shaped.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, June 19<sup>th<\/sup>. We\u2019ll talk more about it today. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. There\u2019s a verse in Scripture that says we\u2019re to be ready to preach in season and out of season.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think our guest is pretty much ready! He probably preaches at night in his sleep! [Laughter] Don\u2019t you, Bob?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think you\u2019re probably right. I think he\u2019s ready at any point in time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He became the pastor of Moody Church\u2014Dr. Lutzer\u2014where he pastored for 37 years, by the way. How you ended up getting that\u2014that is such a great story. Tell them how you ended up preaching your first sermon there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> Well, you know, it is a remarkable story, and I tell it to give glory to God for His providence in my life. My whole life has been, really, a story of God\u2019s providence. I was the pastor of a Baptist church in Chicago called Edgewater. In 1977\u2014a long time ago\u2014I resigned to teach full-time at Moody Bible Institute, so they had a party for us the last Sunday of March. We woke up the next Sunday without a church to go to. I wanted to go to a different church, but my wife, Rebecca, said, \u201cLet\u2019s go to Moody Church, because you have come to know Pastor Wiersbe.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I have to say, whenever I hear the voice of God, it sounds an awful lot like Rebecca. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I thought you were going to say Warren Wiersbe. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> No, we\u2019ll get to that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the point is, we were on our way. I dropped her and the two kids off\u2014we only had two children at the time\u2014and I said, \u201cI\u2019ll find a parking spot and I\u2019ll find you in the back of the church.\u201d LaSalle Street was as tight as a drum. Parking was horrible! I didn\u2019t know where I\u2019d find a spot, but there, in front of me, a man pulled out. I saw him walk across the street; he backed out\u2014I pulled in\u2014100 feet or so from the church door. I walked into the lobby, and there was Rebecca and there was Pastor Wiersbe with his coat on. He was leaving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe didn\u2019t see me, but I saw him. I put my hand on his shoulder, and I said, \u201cWiersbe, what are you doing here? It\u2019s ten minutes before the morning service.\u201d He said, \u201cErwin Lutzer, I\u2019m sick! I\u2019m on my way home. Will you preach for me this morning?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, that morning, I stood on the platform and\u2014only half-seriously\u2014said to myself, \u201cYou know, if they ever call me to be the pastor here, I\u2019ll say yes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it wasn\u2019t serious because, at that point, I had no idea that that would ever happen. I preached on Psalm 1\u2014a message I had preached before about meditating in the Word of God. What\u2019s critical here is that was one of the dots that God connected whereby eventually I became the pastor of Moody Church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I would say to any of our listeners, if you go to Chicago and don\u2019t go by Moody Church and just slip in to the magnificent amphitheater\u2014I don\u2019t know how to describe it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The sanctuary is beautiful!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s magnificent\u2014it really is! You owe it to yourself to see that. The history seems to just kind of seep out of the walls of that church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, Dr. Erwin Lutzer was the pastor there for more than 37 years. He\u2019s also the voice that you hear on the radio in the daily radio program called <em>Running to Win<\/em>. And he\u2019s written a book called <em>The Power of a Clear Conscience.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to take you all of the way back, Dr. Lutzer, to your childhood and the family you grew up in, because you\u2019ve got quite a story\u2014and quite a legacy\u2014that you were given by your parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> My parents were Germans, but they were brought up in the Ukraine; and they came to Canada independently. Now they were Germans and they went through World War I\u2014tremendous suffering. My father was already converted, but my mother wasn\u2019t. She had been baptized, but knew she wasn\u2019t saved. She attended this little church, heard the gospel, and was gloriously converted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe heard my father pray, and he heard her pray. In those days, the men sat on one side, and the women on the other. He asked if he could walk her home. On the way, he asked whether she would marry him. She said she would have to think about it, but, within three weeks, they were married. Now, here\u2019s the thing. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Hold it! Hold it! Hold it! They had never met before?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> Well, just seeing each other in church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy mother said later, she\u2019d heard my dad pray and knew that he must be a godly man. So that was their connection, but that was the <em>only<\/em> connection they had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it worked out okay\u2014their marriage did?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> They lived together for 77 years. My father died at 106, and my mother at 103. I always say that my parents lived so long that I\u2019m sure, until my father died, all of their friends in heaven thought that they just didn\u2019t make it. [Laughter] You know, they said, \u201cWhere are the Lutzers?\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, believe me, the Lutzers made it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> 77 years. You had to have heard the message of their marriage. What was it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> This almost brings tears to my eyes, but let me tell you a story. They were simple people. They didn\u2019t have a chance to get an education, even though they taught themselves how to read German and English. Just dogged determination and faith in just a remarkable way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn about 1958, we had hail out on the farm. I was born on a farm in Saskatchewan, Canada. The crop was wiped out. My father did not have any insurance. Huge hailstones pounding everything into the ground. When it was over, they asked us to get on our knees to thank God, and that God would help us get through the coming year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you know, you can preach sermons. My dad never preached a single sermon, nor did my mother, but that kind of trust in God, after horrible suffering in World War I is really the legacy. So, if you ask the legacy\u2014what they tried to do is to teach us that sin was bad and we were to follow the Lord. We had devotions from the German Bible after breakfast every single morning. I mean, if we missed three times a year\u2014that was remarkable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe got on our knees as kids; and nobody asked us, \u201cDo you like to do this? Are these devotions meaningful?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t up for a vote?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t up for a vote. If you know anything about European parenting, it\u2019s survival. You know, they had come from a difficult life. \u201cHow do we survive? How do we get from one year to another?\u201d It was a matter of survival. We knew that we were loved. They seldom told us that, but we didn\u2019t have to debate that. They took care of us\u2014they clothed us, they fed us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to school with a horse and buggy in the summer and a sleigh in the winter. Those are the kinds of conditions, but hearty people, faith in God, come what may, we\u2019re going to go on believing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t just hint at it\u2014you declared it. They were a couple of great faith. I know\u2014because you\u2019ve mentioned this to me privately\u2014that your mom was a praying woman, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> She really was. Now, let me tell you, they lived together for 77 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt their 70<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary, I was sitting next to my mother and I said, \u201cMother, do you know the names of all of your great-grandchildren?\u201d (All of these kids running around.) And she just waved her hand, and she said, \u201cI have a prayer list, and I mention them to God every day.\u201d When she died, 122 people were on her prayer list. Every child; every grandchild; every great-grandchild\u2014written in her own handwriting\u2014and a number of missionaries.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if you ask this question, \u201cHow come God has used me\u2014and also some of my other siblings?\u201d \u2014I really think that it goes back to the prayers of my parents. Their legacy was one of prayer and simple commitment to God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me tell you about my conversion. You know, being brought up in a Christian home, I accepted Jesus as my Savior, as a child, over and over again\u2014and didn\u2019t feel any differently. I\u2019ll never forget\u2014when I was fourteen, my mother said to me, \u201cWe think it\u2019s time for you to accept Jesus.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I never asked her why she said that, but I remember my answer, specifically, was, \u201cI\u2019ve tried it, but it doesn\u2019t work for me.\u201d I said, \u201cI accept Jesus into my heart and I\u2019m not changed. I don\u2019t feel anything.\u201d She said, \u201cYou have to do that by faith.\u201d So we got down on our knees in the little farm home, and I accepted Christ by faith, whether I felt differently or not.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next day, I <em>knew <\/em>that I knew God. The witness of the Holy Spirit of God\u2014God\u2019s presence\u2014was so powerful. I have never doubted that I belong to God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to turn our conversation now to the fruit of your parents\u2019 marriage and family\u2014to your life and your preaching\u2014and what you preached about at Moody Church; to the subject of a conscience\u2014and having a clear conscience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it was Francis Bacon who made this statement: \u201cA good conscience is a continual feast.\u201d And I believe it was Paul who wrote to Timothy\u2014did he not\u2014\u201cBut the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy did you write this book? Was it because of that goal that Paul talked to Timothy about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> As a pastor, it\u2019s because I\u2019ve encountered so many people whose consciences will not allow them to grow in the Lord. A couple of examples: Here\u2019s a man whose wife does not know that he fathered a child when he was in college. So here\u2019s this boy growing up in another city. This man has a wonderful wife and kids. He\u2019s asked to be an elder in a church but he always turns it down because, in the back of his mind, is an issue. He knows that he\u2019s forgiven by God but you know, the Apostle Paul says,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI make it my aim,\u201d he says, \u201cto have a conscience free of offense before God and before others.\u201d So one of the reasons I wrote the book was to help people not just to get right with God but rather, the whole issue of reconciliation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me give you another example. In the book I talk about a man who was told\u2014when he was 22\u2014his mother was in a psych ward over and over again while he was growing up and finally, when he was 22\u2014she sat him down and said, \u201cI want you to know that the man you think is your father, isn\u2019t.\u201d She had had a relationship with a man in the neighborhood, and that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, just think about his whole identity crashing down on him. But\u2014by the way\u2014he is a very effective minister of the gospel today\u2014which is such an encouragement to the many people who are listening who may have come and who may have been conceived out of wedlock. Does God have a plan for you? Absolutely! God\u2019s grace and God\u2019s mercy extends to all of those who open their hearts to Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo she ended up not having to go to a psych ward anymore because of the resolution of this issue in her mind and heart. I could go on. I could tell you about women who had abortions who didn\u2019t tell their husbands. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I decided to do, with God\u2019s help, was to preach a series of messages\u2014which is this book, <em>The Power of a Clear Conscience<\/em>\u2014in which I would help people to understand that God wanted them to have a clear conscience. There was a path to wholeness, not only before God, but before others.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re saying there are people who are experiencing maybe physical issues\u2014illness or sickness today\u2014that is linked to the fact that their conscience is still bothering? Or they may be experiencing psychological stress and trauma that\u2019s all linked to the fact that they\u2019ve never come clean with what\u2019s in their background?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> I can\u2019t prove this, but I believe that one of the reasons that America goes to bed with so many sleeping pills is because people go to bed with consciences that are unreconciled, and consciences that are not at peace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Bible says, regarding Christians, \u201cSatan accuses the brethren,\u201d during the day and during the night. If you\u2019ve had this experience\u2014as I have\u2014where there\u2019s something on your conscience; you can go to bed and sleep but when you wake up\u2014even if it\u2019s in the morning or the middle of the night\u2014suddenly all of these issues come rushing in. Unless people know how to take care of that, they will be affected physically and in every other way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let\u2019s just talk about what a conscience is. There are some of our listeners who grew up\u2014maybe in some legalistic churches that preached law\u2014that held up a standard\u2014and made them feel guilty or made them feel ashamed\u2014all of the time. In many cases, they can\u2019t tell what\u2019s right or wrong in terms of, \u201cWhat should I be feeling in my conscience?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExplain what a conscience is and where it came from.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> First of all, the word \u201cconscience\u201d comes from two words: con\u2014which means \u201cwith,\u201d and then, science\u2014which means \u201cknowledge.\u201d So it is \u201cknowledge along with.\u201d Now, everybody has a conscience\u2014the Bible makes that very clear. In the book of Romans, Paul says that the Gentiles are going to be judged by their conscience. But the conscience also, and this is to your point\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is development, and there is a way in which the conscience can be shaped. There are people today who feel guilty over things they should not feel guilty about. And, by the way, there are those who <em>don\u2019t<\/em> feel guilty about something that they <em>should<\/em> feel guilty about. So the conscience has to be informed by Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut to the person who is inheriting guilt\u2014and the second chapter of my book is entitled, \u201cIt\u2019s Not All Your Fault.\u201d We\u2019re dealing with people all of the time who, because of bad parenting, they have guilt that has been heaped upon them and they have shame that has been heaped upon them,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tso they need to be able to see God\u2019s grace and mercy there as well. Everyone has a conscience. We have all felt it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s like going through a metal detector at O\u2019Hare airport. Sometimes it is set more sensitively, so it goes off more easily. You may have been in a home where everything was very loose and your conscience doesn\u2019t trouble you; maybe it should. You may be, also, in a home where it was too strict; it\u2019s troubling you about things that shouldn\u2019t trouble you. So we need a conscience that is informed by the Word of God so that we understand that the rudimentary issues of the Law are written on every heart; but, of course, the conscience can be shaped\u2014and has to be\u2014by the Word of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There are some things in every human conscience that are imprinted there by God at birth so that we grow up knowing some right and wrong independent of what cultural data we get; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> Exactly! That\u2019s why people all over the world have a conscience and they are struggling and they have an intuitive sense of right or wrong. Not perfect but, nonetheless, it is there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; as you were talking there, I was thinking about Romans 1. It says, \u201cFor the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.\u201d In other words, they know the truth\u2014they know what\u2019s wrong\u2014what\u2019s right\u2014and they\u2019re suppressing it in their conscience. You use an illustration I want you to comment on here. You say, \u201cSome people feel like they had a mountain of shame and guilt, but God has something better.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> He really does, and you know, the big text there is in the book of Hebrews where it says that \u201cJesus despised the shame.\u201d Jesus shamed shame! So, to the person who is listening today, who is saying, \u201cI am filled with shame,\u201d \u2014you come to Jesus and you spill all of that out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe will receive you. You don\u2019t have to be ashamed in His presence, because He is going to replace it with a sense of wholeness. What you need to do is recognize this\u2014that the shame that you experience could be demonic\u2014perhaps you\u2019re even ashamed about something that you should be ashamed about. Either way Jesus is there, and He\u2019s the One Who is able to cleanse us\u2014to forgive us\u2014so that we can stand in His presence and be welcomed and received and valued.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is, of course, the essence of the gospel as we come to Jesus Christ, the One Who died for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What you talked about in the book that I liked was there\u2019s a mountain of shame that we feel, but God\u2019s got a bigger mountain of grace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> Oh, I love that! I love that! Actually, it\u2019s a quote from Spurgeon, who says that, \u201cNo matter how big the mountain is of our sin, God\u2019s grace is always a bigger mountain.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> And let me say this: the righteousness of Jesus Christ\u2014applied to the human heart\u2014that righteousness is far greater than our sin. I always like to tell people that there\u2019s more grace and love in God\u2019s heart than there is sin in your past. You come as you are, and you receive that. Lay it down, and God is able to give you grace and strength in the midst of your conflict.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You have met people\u2014and we\u2019ve got some listening today\u2014paralyzed by guilt from the past. It is so consuming. They can\u2019t get past it! The shame that they feel\u2014what\u2019s the antidote for that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> Well, the antidote, really, is to recognize a couple of things. First of all\u2014all of us, of course, have experienced shame\u2014but in order to answer your question, let\u2019s go back to the Garden of Eden. It\u2019s there where the conscience began. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is there that we find that Adam and Eve were ashamed. So what are they doing? They\u2019re running from God. They\u2019re not looking for God. They\u2019re running from Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They\u2019re hiding; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> And God brings clothes to them\u2014skins of animals. Do you know what God is saying right there? He\u2019s saying, \u201cThere\u2019s no cheap substitute for sin, but I will provide it.\u201d And I would say to the person out there who is struggling with guilt and an overabundance of shame, \u201cCome to Jesus\u2014as you are\u2014and receive the fact that He is the One Who delivers us from our shame and gives us hope of reconciliation with Him\u2014 and also with others. By the way\u2014let God into your life! The grace of God does not enter into closed doors, but comes when we invite it\u2014as we are\u2014undeserving though we are, we come to Him.\u2019\u2019\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have found great comfort in knowing that the Bible says, \u201cThere is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo know that we are remembering things that God says He\u2019s forgotten. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> You know what I like to do? I like when people memorize a couple of verses of Romans 8. \u201cWho shall lay anything to the charge of God\u2019s elect? It is God who justifies! Who is he that condemns? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again and is, even now, at the right hand of the throne of to God, who also makes intercession for us.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> We have to reject our feelings, because they lie to us! They tell us things, oftentimes, that are unbiblical. So don\u2019t go with your feelings. Go with the Word of God. \u201cThere is no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You have to decide where you\u2019re going to put your trust: in your feelings? Are you going to place it in the Word of God that\u2019s a promise? And the promise is, \u201cThere is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you don\u2019t know Christ, you\u2019ve got a problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re in need of the gospel of Christ and of forgiveness\u2014to become a child of God. And to ultimately get on with this thing you\u2019ve been talking about here\u2014a clear conscience and also spiritual growth, which I want to talk more about this week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If your conscience does continue to condemn you, I think you need to ask the question, \u201cIs it because I don\u2019t really know Christ\u2014because I\u2019ve never really embraced Him as my Lord, my Savior, my Master\u2014I\u2019ve never received the forgiveness that He promises? Or is it because I don\u2019t understand God\u2019s grace and how it applies?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where Dr. Lutzer\u2019s book can be a great salve for a lot of people who have a troubled conscience and who need relief. He probably preaches at night in his sleep! I think he\u2019s ready at any point in time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He became the pastor of Moody Church\u2014Dr. Lutzer\u2014where he pastored for 37 years, by the way. How you ended up getting that\u2014that is such a great story. Tell them how you ended up preaching your first sermon there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> Well, you know, it is a remarkable story, and I tell it to give glory to God for His providence in my life. My whole life has been, really, a story of God\u2019s providence. I was the pastor of a Baptist church in Chicago called Edgewater. In 1977\u2014a long time ago\u2014I resigned to teach full-time at Moody Bible Institute, so they had a party for us the last Sunday of March. We woke up the next Sunday without a church to go to. I wanted to go to a different church, but my wife, Rebecca, said, \u201cLet\u2019s go to Moody Church, because you have come to know Pastor Wiersbe.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I have to say, whenever I hear the voice of God, it sounds an awful lot like Rebecca. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I thought you were going to say Warren Wiersbe. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> No, we\u2019ll get to that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the point is, we were on our way. I dropped her and the two kids off\u2014we only had two children at the time\u2014and I said, \u201cI\u2019ll find a parking spot and I\u2019ll find you in the back of the church.\u201d LaSalle Street was as tight as a drum. Parking was horrible! I didn\u2019t know where I\u2019d find a spot, but there, in front of me, a man pulled out. I saw him walk across the street; he backed out\u2014I pulled in\u2014100 feet or so from the church door. I walked into the lobby, and there was Rebecca and there was Pastor Wiersbe with his coat on. He was leaving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe didn\u2019t see me, but I saw him. I put my hand on his shoulder, and I said, \u201cWiersbe, what are you doing here? It\u2019s ten minutes before the morning service.\u201d He said, \u201cErwin Lutzer, I\u2019m sick! I\u2019m on my way home. Will you preach for me this morning?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, that morning, I stood on the platform and\u2014only half-seriously\u2014said to myself, \u201cYou know, if they ever call me to be the pastor here, I\u2019ll say yes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it wasn\u2019t serious because, at that point, I had no idea that that would ever happen. I preached on Psalm 1\u2014a message I had preached before about meditating in the Word of God. What\u2019s critical here is that was one of the dots that God connected whereby eventually I became the pastor of Moody Church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I would say to any of our listeners, if you go to Chicago and don\u2019t go by Moody Church and just slip in to the magnificent amphitheater\u2014I don\u2019t know how to describe it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The sanctuary is beautiful!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s magnificent\u2014it really is! You owe it to yourself to see that. The history seems to just kind of seep out of the walls of that church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, Dr. Erwin Lutzer was the pastor there for more than 37 years. He\u2019s also the voice that you hear on the radio in the daily radio program called <em>Running to Win<\/em>. And he\u2019s written a book called <em>The Power of a Clear Conscience.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to take you all of the way back, Dr. Lutzer, to your childhood and the family you grew up in, because you\u2019ve got quite a story\u2014and quite a legacy\u2014that you were given by your parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> My parents were Germans, but they were brought up in the Ukraine; and they came to Canada independently. Now they were Germans and they went through World War I\u2014tremendous suffering. My father was already converted, but my mother wasn\u2019t. She had been baptized, but knew she wasn\u2019t saved. She attended this little church, heard the gospel, and was gloriously converted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe heard my father pray, and he heard her pray. In those days, the men sat on one side, and the women on the other. He asked if he could walk her home. On the way, he asked whether she would marry him. She said she would have to think about it, but, within three weeks, they were married. Now, here\u2019s the thing. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Hold it! Hold it! Hold it! They had never met before?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> Well, just seeing each other in church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy mother said later, she\u2019d heard my dad pray and knew that he must be a godly man. So that was their connection, but that was the <em>only<\/em> connection they had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it worked out okay\u2014their marriage did?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> They lived together for 77 years. My father died at 106, and my mother at 103. I always say that my parents lived so long that I\u2019m sure, until my father died, all of their friends in heaven thought that they just didn\u2019t make it. [Laughter] You know, they said, \u201cWhere are the Lutzers?\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, believe me, the Lutzers made it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> 77 years. You had to have heard the message of their marriage. What was it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> This almost brings tears to my eyes, but let me tell you a story. They were simple people. They didn\u2019t have a chance to get an education, even though they taught themselves how to read German and English. Just dogged determination and faith in just a remarkable way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn about 1958, we had hail out on the farm. I was born on a farm in Saskatchewan, Canada. The crop was wiped out. My father did not have any insurance. Huge hailstones pounding everything into the ground. When it was over, they asked us to get on our knees to thank God, and that God would help us get through the coming year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you know, you can preach sermons. My dad never preached a single sermon, nor did my mother, but that kind of trust in God, after horrible suffering in World War I is really the legacy. So, if you ask the legacy\u2014what they tried to do is to teach us that sin was bad and we were to follow the Lord. We had devotions from the German Bible after breakfast every single morning. I mean, if we missed three times a year\u2014that was remarkable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe got on our knees as kids; and nobody asked us, \u201cDo you like to do this? Are these devotions meaningful?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t up for a vote?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t up for a vote. If you know anything about European parenting, it\u2019s survival. You know, they had come from a difficult life. \u201cHow do we survive? How do we get from one year to another?\u201d It was a matter of survival. We knew that we were loved. They seldom told us that, but we didn\u2019t have to debate that. They took care of us\u2014they clothed us, they fed us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to school with a horse and buggy in the summer and a sleigh in the winter. Those are the kinds of conditions, but hearty people, faith in God, come what may, we\u2019re going to go on believing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t just hint at it\u2014you declared it. They were a couple of great faith. I know\u2014because you\u2019ve mentioned this to me privately\u2014that your mom was a praying woman, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> She really was. Now, let me tell you, they lived together for 77 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt their 70<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary, I was sitting next to my mother and I said, \u201cMother, do you know the names of all of your great-grandchildren?\u201d (All of these kids running around.) And she just waved her hand, and she said, \u201cI have a prayer list, and I mention them to God every day.\u201d When she died, 122 people were on her prayer list. Every child; every grandchild; every great-grandchild\u2014written in her own handwriting\u2014and a number of missionaries.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if you ask this question, \u201cHow come God has used me\u2014and also some of my other siblings?\u201d \u2014I really think that it goes back to the prayers of my parents. Their legacy was one of prayer and simple commitment to God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me tell you about my conversion. You know, being brought up in a Christian home, I accepted Jesus as my Savior, as a child, over and over again\u2014and didn\u2019t feel any differently. I\u2019ll never forget\u2014when I was fourteen, my mother said to me, \u201cWe think it\u2019s time for you to accept Jesus.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I never asked her why she said that, but I remember my answer, specifically, was, \u201cI\u2019ve tried it, but it doesn\u2019t work for me.\u201d I said, \u201cI accept Jesus into my heart and I\u2019m not changed. I don\u2019t feel anything.\u201d She said, \u201cYou have to do that by faith.\u201d So we got down on our knees in the little farm home, and I accepted Christ by faith, whether I felt differently or not.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next day, I <em>knew <\/em>that I knew God. The witness of the Holy Spirit of God\u2014God\u2019s presence\u2014was so powerful. I have never doubted that I belong to God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to turn our conversation now to the fruit of your parents\u2019 marriage and family\u2014to your life and your preaching\u2014and what you preached about at Moody Church; to the subject of a conscience\u2014and having a clear conscience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it was Francis Bacon who made this statement: \u201cA good conscience is a continual feast.\u201d And I believe it was Paul who wrote to Timothy\u2014did he not\u2014\u201cBut the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy did you write this book? Was it because of that goal that Paul talked to Timothy about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> As a pastor, it\u2019s because I\u2019ve encountered so many people whose consciences will not allow them to grow in the Lord. A couple of examples: Here\u2019s a man whose wife does not know that he fathered a child when he was in college. So here\u2019s this boy growing up in another city. This man has a wonderful wife and kids. He\u2019s asked to be an elder in a church but he always turns it down because, in the back of his mind, is an issue. He knows that he\u2019s forgiven by God but you know, the Apostle Paul says,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI make it my aim,\u201d he says, \u201cto have a conscience free of offense before God and before others.\u201d So one of the reasons I wrote the book was to help people not just to get right with God but rather, the whole issue of reconciliation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me give you another example. In the book I talk about a man who was told\u2014when he was 22\u2014his mother was in a psych ward over and over again while he was growing up and finally, when he was 22\u2014she sat him down and said, \u201cI want you to know that the man you think is your father, isn\u2019t.\u201d She had had a relationship with a man in the neighborhood, and that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, just think about his whole identity crashing down on him. But\u2014by the way\u2014he is a very effective minister of the gospel today\u2014which is such an encouragement to the many people who are listening who may have come and who may have been conceived out of wedlock. Does God have a plan for you? Absolutely! God\u2019s grace and God\u2019s mercy extends to all of those who open their hearts to Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo she ended up not having to go to a psych ward anymore because of the resolution of this issue in her mind and heart. I could go on. I could tell you about women who had abortions who didn\u2019t tell their husbands. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I decided to do, with God\u2019s help, was to preach a series of messages\u2014which is this book, <em>The Power of a Clear Conscience<\/em>\u2014in which I would help people to understand that God wanted them to have a clear conscience. There was a path to wholeness, not only before God, but before others.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re saying there are people who are experiencing maybe physical issues\u2014illness or sickness today\u2014that is linked to the fact that their conscience is still bothering? Or they may be experiencing psychological stress and trauma that\u2019s all linked to the fact that they\u2019ve never come clean with what\u2019s in their background?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> I can\u2019t prove this, but I believe that one of the reasons that America goes to bed with so many sleeping pills is because people go to bed with consciences that are unreconciled, and consciences that are not at peace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Bible says, regarding Christians, \u201cSatan accuses the brethren,\u201d during the day and during the night. If you\u2019ve had this experience\u2014as I have\u2014where there\u2019s something on your conscience; you can go to bed and sleep but when you wake up\u2014even if it\u2019s in the morning or the middle of the night\u2014suddenly all of these issues come rushing in. Unless people know how to take care of that, they will be affected physically and in every other way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let\u2019s just talk about what a conscience is. There are some of our listeners who grew up\u2014maybe in some legalistic churches that preached law\u2014that held up a standard\u2014and made them feel guilty or made them feel ashamed\u2014all of the time. In many cases, they can\u2019t tell what\u2019s right or wrong in terms of, \u201cWhat should I be feeling in my conscience?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExplain what a conscience is and where it came from.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> First of all, the word \u201cconscience\u201d comes from two words: con\u2014which means \u201cwith,\u201d and then, science\u2014which means \u201cknowledge.\u201d So it is \u201cknowledge along with.\u201d Now, everybody has a conscience\u2014the Bible makes that very clear. In the book of Romans, Paul says that the Gentiles are going to be judged by their conscience. But the conscience also, and this is to your point\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is development, and there is a way in which the conscience can be shaped. There are people today who feel guilty over things they should not feel guilty about. And, by the way, there are those who <em>don\u2019t<\/em> feel guilty about something that they <em>should<\/em> feel guilty about. So the conscience has to be informed by Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut to the person who is inheriting guilt\u2014and the second chapter of my book is entitled, \u201cIt\u2019s Not All Your Fault.\u201d We\u2019re dealing with people all of the time who, because of bad parenting, they have guilt that has been heaped upon them and they have shame that has been heaped upon them,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tso they need to be able to see God\u2019s grace and mercy there as well. Everyone has a conscience. We have all felt it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s like going through a metal detector at O\u2019Hare airport. Sometimes it is set more sensitively, so it goes off more easily. You may have been in a home where everything was very loose and your conscience doesn\u2019t trouble you; maybe it should. You may be, also, in a home where it was too strict; it\u2019s troubling you about things that shouldn\u2019t trouble you. So we need a conscience that is informed by the Word of God so that we understand that the rudimentary issues of the Law are written on every heart; but, of course, the conscience can be shaped\u2014and has to be\u2014by the Word of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There are some things in every human conscience that are imprinted there by God at birth so that we grow up knowing some right and wrong independent of what cultural data we get; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> Exactly! That\u2019s why people all over the world have a conscience and they are struggling and they have an intuitive sense of right or wrong. Not perfect but, nonetheless, it is there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; as you were talking there, I was thinking about Romans 1. It says, \u201cFor the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.\u201d In other words, they know the truth\u2014they know what\u2019s wrong\u2014what\u2019s right\u2014and they\u2019re suppressing it in their conscience. You use an illustration I want you to comment on here. You say, \u201cSome people feel like they had a mountain of shame and guilt, but God has something better.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> He really does, and you know, the big text there is in the book of Hebrews where it says that \u201cJesus despised the shame.\u201d Jesus shamed shame! So, to the person who is listening today, who is saying, \u201cI am filled with shame,\u201d \u2014you come to Jesus and you spill all of that out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe will receive you. You don\u2019t have to be ashamed in His presence, because He is going to replace it with a sense of wholeness. What you need to do is recognize this\u2014that the shame that you experience could be demonic\u2014perhaps you\u2019re even ashamed about something that you should be ashamed about. Either way Jesus is there, and He\u2019s the One Who is able to cleanse us\u2014to forgive us\u2014so that we can stand in His presence and be welcomed and received and valued.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is, of course, the essence of the gospel as we come to Jesus Christ, the One Who died for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What you talked about in the book that I liked was there\u2019s a mountain of shame that we feel, but God\u2019s got a bigger mountain of grace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> Oh, I love that! I love that! Actually, it\u2019s a quote from Spurgeon, who says that, \u201cNo matter how big the mountain is of our sin, God\u2019s grace is always a bigger mountain.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> And let me say this: the righteousness of Jesus Christ\u2014applied to the human heart\u2014that righteousness is far greater than our sin. I always like to tell people that there\u2019s more grace and love in God\u2019s heart than there is sin in your past. You come as you are, and you receive that. Lay it down, and God is able to give you grace and strength in the midst of your conflict.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You have met people\u2014and we\u2019ve got some listening today\u2014paralyzed by guilt from the past. It is so consuming. They can\u2019t get past it! The shame that they feel\u2014what\u2019s the antidote for that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> Well, the antidote, really, is to recognize a couple of things. First of all\u2014all of us, of course, have experienced shame\u2014but in order to answer your question, let\u2019s go back to the Garden of Eden. It\u2019s there where the conscience began. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is there that we find that Adam and Eve were ashamed. So what are they doing? They\u2019re running from God. They\u2019re not looking for God. They\u2019re running from Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They\u2019re hiding; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> And God brings clothes to them\u2014skins of animals. Do you know what God is saying right there? He\u2019s saying, \u201cThere\u2019s no cheap substitute for sin, but I will provide it.\u201d And I would say to the person out there who is struggling with guilt and an overabundance of shame, \u201cCome to Jesus\u2014as you are\u2014and receive the fact that He is the One Who delivers us from our shame and gives us hope of reconciliation with Him\u2014 and also with others. By the way\u2014let God into your life! The grace of God does not enter into closed doors, but comes when we invite it\u2014as we are\u2014undeserving though we are, we come to Him.\u2019\u2019\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have found great comfort in knowing that the Bible says, \u201cThere is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo know that we are remembering things that God says He\u2019s forgotten. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> You know what I like to do? I like when people memorize a couple of verses of Romans 8. \u201cWho shall lay anything to the charge of God\u2019s elect? It is God who justifies! Who is he that condemns? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again and is, even now, at the right hand of the throne of to God, who also makes intercession for us.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Lutzer:<\/strong> We have to reject our feelings, because they lie to us! They tell us things, oftentimes, that are unbiblical. So don\u2019t go with your feelings. Go with the Word of God. \u201cThere is no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You have to decide where you\u2019re going to put your trust: in your feelings? Are you going to place it in the Word of God that\u2019s a promise? And the promise is, \u201cThere is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you don\u2019t know Christ, you\u2019ve got a problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re in need of the gospel of Christ and of forgiveness\u2014to become a child of God. And to ultimately get on with this thing you\u2019ve been talking about here\u2014a clear conscience and also spiritual growth, which I want to talk more about this week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If your conscience does continue to condemn you, I think you need to ask the question, \u201cIs it because I don\u2019t really know Christ\u2014because I\u2019ve never really embraced Him as my Lord, my Savior, my Master\u2014I\u2019ve never received the forgiveness that He promises? Or is it because I don\u2019t understand God\u2019s grace and how it applies?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where Dr. Lutzer\u2019s book can be a great salve for a lot of people who have a troubled conscience and who need relief.
