Pastor H.B. Charles says he caught a lot from watching his own father.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>To sit and watch my father weep in worship while hymns were being sung still has an impact on me. The things that made him laugh, the things that made him cry, watching him forgive. There are times I had seen my father say to someone, \u201cI was wrong; I should not have said that.\u201d So many of those things I learned, not merely from his formal teaching and instruction, but by his example. I was just a kid that just wanted to be with him all the time. We have a guest joining us today, Dennis, who our studio audience\u2014we don\u2019t always have a studio audience, but today we do\u2014our studio audience had a chance to hear this guy a couple of nights ago, Valentine\u2019s week, of the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage cruise. He did a great job; didn\u2019t he? [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. H.B. Charles, Jr., joins us\u2014H.B., good to have you on the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Thank you. It\u2019s a joy to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We\u2019re going to ask you, right off the bat, to save you having to explain it. H.B. stands for what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Absolutely nothing. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re not hiding anything with H.B.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Not hiding anything; nope. My father was named H.B. Charles\u2014he did it to me, and I did it to my son. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you ever ask your grandparents what prompted them to just give initials?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>My father was an older man; and so, on my father\u2019s side, I never met my grandparents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And he didn\u2019t know why he was only H.B.?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>He did not know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Just\u2014that\u2019s what he was?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And that\u2019s what you are, and that\u2019s what your son is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019re going to talk about your dad, here, in a minute, but I just want our audience to know who you are. You are the pastor of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida\u2014married to Crystal for how many years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Eighteen years now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Glad you got that right\u2014and three children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019ve written a number of articles about lessons your dad taught you. I\u2019ve been looking forward to talking with you about this. Bob knows this\u2014this is one of my favorite subjects\u2014to talk about the impact of fathers on sons. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to ask you a question that <em>totally<\/em> causes Bob to short-circuit, but you can handle it; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Oh boy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You had your dad with you for 16 years until his death.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>If you could just keep one memory of your dad in those 16 years, what memory would you keep and why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>I\u2019d just think of what comes to my mind. There are many things flooding my thoughts right now\u2014were just the conversations\u2014where I think he listened as I asked questions about <em>everything<\/em>. As a person who came to Christ, as a boy, I had a lot of questions about the Bible. He listened, and it just feels like my time with my father was one extended conversation\u2014advice he gave me, the way he communicated truth to me, the fact that my father told me, \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d at times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI feel like those things helped shape me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your dad had\u2014he was a remarkable man\u2014I just read what you wrote about him. He pastored for 40 years; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And your dad allowed you to preach at his church. Tell them the first time that your dad allowed you to preach at his church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Sure. So, I professed faith in Christ, as a boy. As a boy, I felt a call to preach. My father was so against this\u2014he did not want me to preach, because my father was a preacher. He did everything he could to discourage me. At the age of 11, he finally permitted me to \u201cpreach\u201d at the end of the youth choir musical\u2014they would give me a few minutes. And to hedge his bets, he <em>wrote<\/em> the message for me. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I had been writing my own message on Daniel 3 and the three Hebrew boys. He wrote a story about Jesus passing by the blind man. They thought that, if they gave me these five minutes, they\u2019d get this out of my system and they wouldn\u2019t have to hear\u2014 but I came to preach that night! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014at 11 years of age.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Oh, at 11 years of age. I had the main script my father wrote for me\u2014I read the first paragraph\u2014and at the end of the paragraph said, \u201cJesus is passing by.\u201d I read that\u2014you know, in the culture I grew up, there were \u201cAmens.\u201d So, there was this pause; and I had a natural break. After they stopped amen-ing and stuff, I said, \u201cYou know, He passed by for the three Hebrew boys one day,\u201d [Laughter] and went on and preached my sermon on the three Hebrew boys; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, what did your dad say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Oooooh, I got a grave fussin\u2019-out. [Laughter] But he encouraged\u2014he was grateful that there was a call for my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>H.B., I would think a dad, who\u2019s pastored his church for 40 years\u2014his son comes to him at\u2014I don\u2019t know how old you were \/ seven, eight, nine years old\u2014you come and you say, \u201cI think I\u2019m called to preach,\u201d\u2014I would think a dad would be delighted with that news.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>No. When I say he tried to discourage me, he was very, very grateful; and his hope was that, one day, I would succeed him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So he tried to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>He wanted to make sure that it was the <em>Lord<\/em> calling me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was not a carnal call\u2014it was a spiritual call on your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And after you preached about the three Hebrew boys, did he affirm that there was some gifting there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And that\u2019s when he started to put some fuel behind what you were trying to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Let me jump ahead to Father\u2019s Day weekend of 1989.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>You were 16 years old; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you were preaching a youth retreat out of state.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell us what happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>So, my father wasn\u2019t feeling well the weekend I was going to preach in Detroit\u2014a youth meeting \/ six days. The day before I was to leave, I went to see him in the hospital. It was the only time in my life my father had been in the hospital\u2014it was such a shocking thing. I just remember I was just overwhelmed and began to cry. My dad was like: \u201cSon, you can\u2019t be crying. They brought you here to cheer me up.\u201d I just remember that good time I had with him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got on the plane. The next day\u2014that Sunday night, he called me after my first day of preaching. He wanted to know how the day went. Just hearing his voice, I just became overwhelmed again. I told him, \u201cI\u2019m ready to come home <em>now<\/em>!\u201d He reminded me I had six more sermons to preach before I could come home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>He said, \u201cSon, I want you to do an old man a favor.\u201d He says, \u201cBe a man and preach.\u201d I said, \u201cYes, sir,\u201d and he said, \u201cNo, son. Promise me you\u2019ll be a man\u2014preach.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did\u2014I promised him. We exchanged \u201cI love yous\u201d and goodnights. That was the last time I ever talked to my father. The next weekend, as I was flying home from Detroit\u2014back to Los Angeles\u2014the Lord called my father upstairs from labor to his final reward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You absorbed that, emotionally\u2014the loss of your father\u2014but it wasn\u2019t long before the congregation that your dad had pastored for 40 years turned around and asked you to do something. What did they ask you to do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes; so a little more than a year later, at the age of 17, I went to the church service\u2014to the church meeting, I should say\u2014to see who would be the next pastor of my dad\u2019s church. In that meeting, they extended a call to me to be the pastor of that church, at the age of 17. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have a 17-year-old son. I really don\u2019t trust him to watch the goldfish in his room, much less pastor a church. [Laughter] So, this is not something I would recommend; but in the providence of God, this is my testimony.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019ve had a while to look back on this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, you\u2019ve now been a pastor for how many years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>I started with that church for 18 years. I\u2019ve been at the church I am now for 8 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m told a story\u2014and I haven\u2019t verified this with you to find out if it\u2019s true or not\u2014but I am told that you would preach on Sunday mornings. What did you do on Sunday nights? If you weren\u2019t preaching, what did you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes. So, if I may very quickly say\u2014early in my pastorate, charismatic stuff started rising. I didn\u2019t know\u2014this was new for our church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>So, I am thumbing through <em>Moody<\/em> magazine\u2014the old <em>Moody<\/em> magazine\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I remember it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>\u2014and I see an advertisement for a book on Charismatics by John MacArthur. I bought that book \/ read that book and began to devour everything I could by Dr. John MacArthur. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I don\u2019t know\u2014at some point, I looked at the back of the book. It dawned on me where he was; and he was just on the other side of the hill, over the 405 freeway. I found out where his church was in Sun Valley, California. On Sunday nights, I\u2019d be sitting in the back of John MacArthur\u2019s church, learning theology and learning how to preach.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I had some people who wanted to know: \u201cWere you just getting next week\u2019s sermon?\u201d\u2014 [Laughter]\u2014whatever he preached, you\u2019re going to do next week. But you were getting a Masters class in preaching technique as you listened to how he exegetes Scripture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes; absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was learning theology. I was learning how to teach in a way to connect Scripture with Scripture; and I was learning\u2014for a term that is being more used now\u2014text-driven preaching.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>He just was working his way through the text. When his time ran out, he was like, \u201cI\u2019ll pick it up next week.\u201d I had not heard that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s not what you started with, as a preacher; but it\u2019s what you gravitated toward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Why is that still the approach that you take as you preach at Shiloh in Jacksonville?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>So, I believe, regardless of the chapter divisions, you have to put 2 Timothy 3:16-17 together with 2 Timothy 4:1-2. The call to preach the Word is resting on the foundation of the fact that \u201cAll Scripture is breathed out by God; and it is profitable for rebuke, instruction, exhortation, training in righteousness.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf this Bible is the God-breathed Scriptures, then why in the world are you running around somewhere else looking for something to say? I am convinced the Bible is the Word of God; and in my teaching and preaching, I want to best let the text speak. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf I may tell a brief story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>My installation, at the age of 17\u2014two very interesting stories. At the end of that service, a note came up from an usher that said to Dr. E. V. Hill, who led my installation, that: \u201cYou have to let this service out.\u201d The usher was my vice-principle. She wrote to Dr. Hill: \u201cYou need to let this service out. H.B. has to be at school in the morning.\u201d [Laughter] That was my installation service. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDr. E. V. Hill preached a message at my installation service that he called\u2014as only Dr. Hill can [imitating Dr. Hill\u2019s voice]: \u201cWhat Can That Boy Tell Me?\u201d\u2014\u201cHe\u2019s only 17 years old. What can that boy tell me when my marriage is in trouble?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat can that boy tell me when my child is going astray?\u201d For 45 minutes, he worked through passages in the Old and the New Testaments that affirm the sufficiency of Scripture and ended by declaring that: \u201cHe can tell you whatever the Word of God tells him to.\u201d [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>I\u2019ve been pastoring 26 years \/ preaching 30 years. I\u2019ve been married 18 years \/ I am blessed with three children; but in the midst of all of that, people on Sunday morning don\u2019t need my advice \/ they don\u2019t need my experience. Thank God for my testimony, but it carries no authority. The authority is in the Word of God. I just want to be a mouthpiece for the text and let God\u2019s Word speak.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How many times, do you think, in the last 20 years \/ 26 years, you\u2019ve wished you could pick up the phone and call your dad and say: \u201cDad, help. I have a question\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes; often. I think of my dad a lot. I remember\u2014the amazing thing is I feel like, even though I had him 16 years, if you asked me the most influential person in my life, it is still him. I feel like I am still learning from the things he taught me, from\u2014my father was a strong man\u2014my father\u2014to sit and watch my father weep in worship, while hymns were being sung, still has an impact on me. The things that made him laugh \/ the things that made him cry\u2014watching him forgive. There are times I had seen my father say to someone: \u201cI was wrong. I should not have said that.\u201d So many of those things I learned, not merely from his formal teaching and instruction, but by his example. I was just a kid that just wanted to be with him all the time. I feel like I\u2019m still learning from him to this day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And there\u2019s a reason for that. One of the things you wrote about your dad was that he raised you like he was training a racehorse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So I don\u2019t think he\u2019d be surprised today that you\u2019re lapping lap after lap and still running to win.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Sure; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How did he train you like a racehorse? Comment on that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes; so, there were times where I just wanted to teach and I wanted to serve. There would be instances where I did not handle something right, and my dad would march me into a meeting and make me apologize. Then, he would\u2014sometimes, after a message\u2014and he would say to the church, \u201cPray for me,\u201d\u2014not referring to me\u2014to him\u2014he said, \u201cI need you to pray for me as I\u2019m dealing with H.B.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says, \u201cIt\u2019s a challenge dealing with him, because I am trying to raise a champion horse.\u201d As a young man, all I heard was him calling me a horse; and I was saying, \u201cWhat?!\u201d But he said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014a champion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>\u2014a champion horse. He says, \u201cThe challenge is that I\u2019m trying to discipline his will without breaking his spirit.\u201d It took me a long time to get the magnitude of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>For ten years after your father died, every Father\u2019s Day, you would not preach a Father\u2019s Day sermon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>I would not. In that regard, grief is elusive. I thank God for the memory of my father, and the legacy of my father, and my time with my father, and that Father\u2019s Day\u2014it would just be rough \/ rough for me. The church never put pressure on me\u2014they understood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, having a son had an effect upon me. I remember preaching, maybe ten years into my pastorate, my first Father\u2019s Day sermon, which was a topical sermon, which I don\u2019t really\u2014I\u2019ve never really preached that often \/ I start with the text, not with the topic. But I preached a message entitled \u201cA Father\u2019s Desire for a Godly Legacy.\u201d I built the message around my funeral. There are people giving remarks, and my son comes to give remarks\u2014and what I hope my son will be able to say about me. The three things \/ the three major movements of the message were that I hope my son will be able to say that: \u201cMy daddy loves Jesus unconditionally,\u201d\u2014that: \u201c\u201dMy daddy loved my mother unconditionally,\u201d\u2014and that: \u201cMy daddy loved me unconditionally.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was a part of, I think, a healing process that was important, at the time, for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, Bob knows that, occasionally, I\u2019ve done this on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em> I don\u2019t do it often, but I\u2019d like to hear you give a tribute to your father. Let\u2019s say\u2014for 120 seconds, we could seat your dad right there. You could look him in the eye and thank him, as your daddy, for what he meant to you, as his son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Sure; wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Would you be willing to try that right now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There are some people listening right now who need to hear how a father did it right\u2014not perfectly\u2014but how a father did it right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And just address your dad with what you called him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDad, the first thing I would just say is: \u201cThank you for the time that you gave me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWith as busy as you were with your ministry, inside and outside of our church, I never felt in competition with the other things that you did. I always felt like I was a priority. Even within the midst of those things, you just let me tag along to be with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to thank you for the fact that you led me in a way that reflected that you had great expectations for me. You didn\u2019t try to corner me into what I would become, but you generally pointed me in the direction with the confidence that God was going to do something great in my life, and gave me freedom to try and freedom to fail. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI never questioned that you loved me; because you were man enough to tell me, with tears in your eyes, that you loved me and that I was a gift from God to you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd your example\u2014I saw you at your best and felt like, at moments, at your worst\u2014and how you handled those high moments with humility and those low moments with repentance has indelibly marked my life. Your faithfulness to your word\u2014good, bad, or indifferent\u2014are things that I am still learning from and I thank God for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I don\u2019t know: \u201cH.B., Sr.\u201d\u2014if you\u2019re listening\u2014\u201cbut you have to be proud of your son.\u201d He has to be proud of you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Would you guys thank H.B.? [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, listening back to that interview\u2014which again, was recorded in front of a live studio audience a few months ago\u2014there\u2019s such power, for good or for ill, in what we do, as parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThank God for His grace; because He does cover a multitude of sins, and He pours grace on a lot of mistakes we make, as parents; but I think, if we are faithful to what He\u2019s called us to, there is blessing in that faithfulness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I was listening to our conversation with H.B., I was thinking about the book that you\u2019ve written, Dennis, called <em>The Forgotten Commandment<\/em>, where you encourage all of us to honor our parents\u2014to keep the fifth commandment no matter what age we are\u2014to speak words of honor \/ to actively honor our parents through writing a tribute to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd of course, too late for anybody to do that in time for Father\u2019s Day this year; but maybe there\u2019s a significant milestone birthday or anniversary, or Christmas this year, or Mother\u2019s Day or Father\u2019s Day next year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTake the challenge to write a tribute to your parents. The things that made him laugh, the things that made him cry, watching him forgive. I was just a kid that just wanted to be with him all the time. We have a guest joining us today, Dennis, who our studio audience\u2014we don\u2019t always have a studio audience, but today we do\u2014our studio audience had a chance to hear this guy a couple of nights ago, Valentine\u2019s week, of the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage cruise. He did a great job; didn\u2019t he? [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. H.B. Charles, Jr., joins us\u2014H.B., good to have you on the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Thank you. It\u2019s a joy to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We\u2019re going to ask you, right off the bat, to save you having to explain it. H.B. stands for what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Absolutely nothing. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re not hiding anything with H.B.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Not hiding anything; nope. My father was named H.B. Charles\u2014he did it to me, and I did it to my son. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you ever ask your grandparents what prompted them to just give initials?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>My father was an older man; and so, on my father\u2019s side, I never met my grandparents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And he didn\u2019t know why he was only H.B.?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>He did not know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Just\u2014that\u2019s what he was?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And that\u2019s what you are, and that\u2019s what your son is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019re going to talk about your dad, here, in a minute, but I just want our audience to know who you are. You are the pastor of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida\u2014married to Crystal for how many years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Eighteen years now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Glad you got that right\u2014and three children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019ve written a number of articles about lessons your dad taught you. I\u2019ve been looking forward to talking with you about this. Bob knows this\u2014this is one of my favorite subjects\u2014to talk about the impact of fathers on sons. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to ask you a question that <em>totally<\/em> causes Bob to short-circuit, but you can handle it; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Oh boy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You had your dad with you for 16 years until his death.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>If you could just keep one memory of your dad in those 16 years, what memory would you keep and why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>I\u2019d just think of what comes to my mind. There are many things flooding my thoughts right now\u2014were just the conversations\u2014where I think he listened as I asked questions about <em>everything<\/em>. As a person who came to Christ, as a boy, I had a lot of questions about the Bible. He listened, and it just feels like my time with my father was one extended conversation\u2014advice he gave me, the way he communicated truth to me, the fact that my father told me, \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d at times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI feel like those things helped shape me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your dad had\u2014he was a remarkable man\u2014I just read what you wrote about him. He pastored for 40 years; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And your dad allowed you to preach at his church. Tell them the first time that your dad allowed you to preach at his church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Sure. So, I professed faith in Christ, as a boy. As a boy, I felt a call to preach. My father was so against this\u2014he did not want me to preach, because my father was a preacher. He did everything he could to discourage me. At the age of 11, he finally permitted me to \u201cpreach\u201d at the end of the youth choir musical\u2014they would give me a few minutes. And to hedge his bets, he <em>wrote<\/em> the message for me. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I had been writing my own message on Daniel 3 and the three Hebrew boys. He wrote a story about Jesus passing by the blind man. They thought that, if they gave me these five minutes, they\u2019d get this out of my system and they wouldn\u2019t have to hear\u2014 but I came to preach that night! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014at 11 years of age.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Oh, at 11 years of age. I had the main script my father wrote for me\u2014I read the first paragraph\u2014and at the end of the paragraph said, \u201cJesus is passing by.\u201d I read that\u2014you know, in the culture I grew up, there were \u201cAmens.\u201d So, there was this pause; and I had a natural break. After they stopped amen-ing and stuff, I said, \u201cYou know, He passed by for the three Hebrew boys one day,\u201d [Laughter] and went on and preached my sermon on the three Hebrew boys; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, what did your dad say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Oooooh, I got a grave fussin\u2019-out. [Laughter] But he encouraged\u2014he was grateful that there was a call for my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>H.B., I would think a dad, who\u2019s pastored his church for 40 years\u2014his son comes to him at\u2014I don\u2019t know how old you were \/ seven, eight, nine years old\u2014you come and you say, \u201cI think I\u2019m called to preach,\u201d\u2014I would think a dad would be delighted with that news.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>No. When I say he tried to discourage me, he was very, very grateful; and his hope was that, one day, I would succeed him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So he tried to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>He wanted to make sure that it was the <em>Lord<\/em> calling me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was not a carnal call\u2014it was a spiritual call on your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And after you preached about the three Hebrew boys, did he affirm that there was some gifting there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And that\u2019s when he started to put some fuel behind what you were trying to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Let me jump ahead to Father\u2019s Day weekend of 1989.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>You were 16 years old; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you were preaching a youth retreat out of state.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell us what happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>So, my father wasn\u2019t feeling well the weekend I was going to preach in Detroit\u2014a youth meeting \/ six days. The day before I was to leave, I went to see him in the hospital. It was the only time in my life my father had been in the hospital\u2014it was such a shocking thing. I just remember I was just overwhelmed and began to cry. My dad was like: \u201cSon, you can\u2019t be crying. They brought you here to cheer me up.\u201d I just remember that good time I had with him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got on the plane. The next day\u2014that Sunday night, he called me after my first day of preaching. He wanted to know how the day went. Just hearing his voice, I just became overwhelmed again. I told him, \u201cI\u2019m ready to come home <em>now<\/em>!\u201d He reminded me I had six more sermons to preach before I could come home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>He said, \u201cSon, I want you to do an old man a favor.\u201d He says, \u201cBe a man and preach.\u201d I said, \u201cYes, sir,\u201d and he said, \u201cNo, son. Promise me you\u2019ll be a man\u2014preach.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did\u2014I promised him. We exchanged \u201cI love yous\u201d and goodnights. That was the last time I ever talked to my father. The next weekend, as I was flying home from Detroit\u2014back to Los Angeles\u2014the Lord called my father upstairs from labor to his final reward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You absorbed that, emotionally\u2014the loss of your father\u2014but it wasn\u2019t long before the congregation that your dad had pastored for 40 years turned around and asked you to do something. What did they ask you to do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes; so a little more than a year later, at the age of 17, I went to the church service\u2014to the church meeting, I should say\u2014to see who would be the next pastor of my dad\u2019s church. In that meeting, they extended a call to me to be the pastor of that church, at the age of 17. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have a 17-year-old son. I really don\u2019t trust him to watch the goldfish in his room, much less pastor a church. [Laughter] So, this is not something I would recommend; but in the providence of God, this is my testimony.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019ve had a while to look back on this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, you\u2019ve now been a pastor for how many years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>I started with that church for 18 years. I\u2019ve been at the church I am now for 8 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m told a story\u2014and I haven\u2019t verified this with you to find out if it\u2019s true or not\u2014but I am told that you would preach on Sunday mornings. What did you do on Sunday nights? If you weren\u2019t preaching, what did you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes. So, if I may very quickly say\u2014early in my pastorate, charismatic stuff started rising. I didn\u2019t know\u2014this was new for our church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>So, I am thumbing through <em>Moody<\/em> magazine\u2014the old <em>Moody<\/em> magazine\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I remember it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>\u2014and I see an advertisement for a book on Charismatics by John MacArthur. I bought that book \/ read that book and began to devour everything I could by Dr. John MacArthur. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I don\u2019t know\u2014at some point, I looked at the back of the book. It dawned on me where he was; and he was just on the other side of the hill, over the 405 freeway. I found out where his church was in Sun Valley, California. On Sunday nights, I\u2019d be sitting in the back of John MacArthur\u2019s church, learning theology and learning how to preach.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I had some people who wanted to know: \u201cWere you just getting next week\u2019s sermon?\u201d\u2014 [Laughter]\u2014whatever he preached, you\u2019re going to do next week. But you were getting a Masters class in preaching technique as you listened to how he exegetes Scripture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes; absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was learning theology. I was learning how to teach in a way to connect Scripture with Scripture; and I was learning\u2014for a term that is being more used now\u2014text-driven preaching.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>He just was working his way through the text. When his time ran out, he was like, \u201cI\u2019ll pick it up next week.\u201d I had not heard that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s not what you started with, as a preacher; but it\u2019s what you gravitated toward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Why is that still the approach that you take as you preach at Shiloh in Jacksonville?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>So, I believe, regardless of the chapter divisions, you have to put 2 Timothy 3:16-17 together with 2 Timothy 4:1-2. The call to preach the Word is resting on the foundation of the fact that \u201cAll Scripture is breathed out by God; and it is profitable for rebuke, instruction, exhortation, training in righteousness.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf this Bible is the God-breathed Scriptures, then why in the world are you running around somewhere else looking for something to say? I am convinced the Bible is the Word of God; and in my teaching and preaching, I want to best let the text speak. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf I may tell a brief story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>My installation, at the age of 17\u2014two very interesting stories. At the end of that service, a note came up from an usher that said to Dr. E. V. Hill, who led my installation, that: \u201cYou have to let this service out.\u201d The usher was my vice-principle. She wrote to Dr. Hill: \u201cYou need to let this service out. H.B. has to be at school in the morning.\u201d [Laughter] That was my installation service. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDr. E. V. Hill preached a message at my installation service that he called\u2014as only Dr. Hill can [imitating Dr. Hill\u2019s voice]: \u201cWhat Can That Boy Tell Me?\u201d\u2014\u201cHe\u2019s only 17 years old. What can that boy tell me when my marriage is in trouble?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat can that boy tell me when my child is going astray?\u201d For 45 minutes, he worked through passages in the Old and the New Testaments that affirm the sufficiency of Scripture and ended by declaring that: \u201cHe can tell you whatever the Word of God tells him to.\u201d [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>I\u2019ve been pastoring 26 years \/ preaching 30 years. I\u2019ve been married 18 years \/ I am blessed with three children; but in the midst of all of that, people on Sunday morning don\u2019t need my advice \/ they don\u2019t need my experience. Thank God for my testimony, but it carries no authority. The authority is in the Word of God. I just want to be a mouthpiece for the text and let God\u2019s Word speak.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How many times, do you think, in the last 20 years \/ 26 years, you\u2019ve wished you could pick up the phone and call your dad and say: \u201cDad, help. I have a question\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes; often. I think of my dad a lot. I remember\u2014the amazing thing is I feel like, even though I had him 16 years, if you asked me the most influential person in my life, it is still him. I feel like I am still learning from the things he taught me, from\u2014my father was a strong man\u2014my father\u2014to sit and watch my father weep in worship, while hymns were being sung, still has an impact on me. The things that made him laugh \/ the things that made him cry\u2014watching him forgive. There are times I had seen my father say to someone: \u201cI was wrong. I should not have said that.\u201d So many of those things I learned, not merely from his formal teaching and instruction, but by his example. I was just a kid that just wanted to be with him all the time. I feel like I\u2019m still learning from him to this day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And there\u2019s a reason for that. One of the things you wrote about your dad was that he raised you like he was training a racehorse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So I don\u2019t think he\u2019d be surprised today that you\u2019re lapping lap after lap and still running to win.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Sure; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How did he train you like a racehorse? Comment on that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes; so, there were times where I just wanted to teach and I wanted to serve. There would be instances where I did not handle something right, and my dad would march me into a meeting and make me apologize. Then, he would\u2014sometimes, after a message\u2014and he would say to the church, \u201cPray for me,\u201d\u2014not referring to me\u2014to him\u2014he said, \u201cI need you to pray for me as I\u2019m dealing with H.B.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says, \u201cIt\u2019s a challenge dealing with him, because I am trying to raise a champion horse.\u201d As a young man, all I heard was him calling me a horse; and I was saying, \u201cWhat?!\u201d But he said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014a champion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>\u2014a champion horse. He says, \u201cThe challenge is that I\u2019m trying to discipline his will without breaking his spirit.\u201d It took me a long time to get the magnitude of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>For ten years after your father died, every Father\u2019s Day, you would not preach a Father\u2019s Day sermon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>I would not. In that regard, grief is elusive. I thank God for the memory of my father, and the legacy of my father, and my time with my father, and that Father\u2019s Day\u2014it would just be rough \/ rough for me. The church never put pressure on me\u2014they understood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, having a son had an effect upon me. I remember preaching, maybe ten years into my pastorate, my first Father\u2019s Day sermon, which was a topical sermon, which I don\u2019t really\u2014I\u2019ve never really preached that often \/ I start with the text, not with the topic. But I preached a message entitled \u201cA Father\u2019s Desire for a Godly Legacy.\u201d I built the message around my funeral. There are people giving remarks, and my son comes to give remarks\u2014and what I hope my son will be able to say about me. The three things \/ the three major movements of the message were that I hope my son will be able to say that: \u201cMy daddy loves Jesus unconditionally,\u201d\u2014that: \u201c\u201dMy daddy loved my mother unconditionally,\u201d\u2014and that: \u201cMy daddy loved me unconditionally.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was a part of, I think, a healing process that was important, at the time, for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, Bob knows that, occasionally, I\u2019ve done this on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em> I don\u2019t do it often, but I\u2019d like to hear you give a tribute to your father. Let\u2019s say\u2014for 120 seconds, we could seat your dad right there. You could look him in the eye and thank him, as your daddy, for what he meant to you, as his son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Sure; wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Would you be willing to try that right now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There are some people listening right now who need to hear how a father did it right\u2014not perfectly\u2014but how a father did it right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And just address your dad with what you called him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDad, the first thing I would just say is: \u201cThank you for the time that you gave me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWith as busy as you were with your ministry, inside and outside of our church, I never felt in competition with the other things that you did. I always felt like I was a priority. Even within the midst of those things, you just let me tag along to be with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to thank you for the fact that you led me in a way that reflected that you had great expectations for me. You didn\u2019t try to corner me into what I would become, but you generally pointed me in the direction with the confidence that God was going to do something great in my life, and gave me freedom to try and freedom to fail. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI never questioned that you loved me; because you were man enough to tell me, with tears in your eyes, that you loved me and that I was a gift from God to you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd your example\u2014I saw you at your best and felt like, at moments, at your worst\u2014and how you handled those high moments with humility and those low moments with repentance has indelibly marked my life. Your faithfulness to your word\u2014good, bad, or indifferent\u2014are things that I am still learning from and I thank God for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I don\u2019t know: \u201cH.B., Sr.\u201d\u2014if you\u2019re listening\u2014\u201cbut you have to be proud of your son.\u201d He has to be proud of you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>H.B.: <\/strong>Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Would you guys thank H.B.? [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, listening back to that interview\u2014which again, was recorded in front of a live studio audience a few months ago\u2014there\u2019s such power, for good or for ill, in what we do, as parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThank God for His grace; because He does cover a multitude of sins, and He pours grace on a lot of mistakes we make, as parents; but I think, if we are faithful to what He\u2019s called us to, there is blessing in that faithfulness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I was listening to our conversation with H.B., I was thinking about the book that you\u2019ve written, Dennis, called <em>The Forgotten Commandment<\/em>, where you encourage all of us to honor our parents\u2014to keep the fifth commandment no matter what age we are\u2014to speak words of honor \/ to actively honor our parents through writing a tribute to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd of course, too late for anybody to do that in time for Father\u2019s Day this year; but maybe there\u2019s a significant milestone birthday or anniversary, or Christmas this year, or Mother\u2019s Day or Father\u2019s Day next year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTake the challenge to write a tribute to your parents.
