Thanks for joining us. With Father\u2019s Day in view, we thought we ought to talk about the responsibility we have, as men, to be dads if God has given us the privilege of being fathers. To do that, we\u2019ve unearthed some\u2014\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014fossils!! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Exactly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I never thought of myself as being a fossil; but on tape, I am! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We carbon-dated\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There may be some listeners who think I\u2019ve even begun to <em>look<\/em> like a fossil.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We carbon-dated this audio, and it goes all the way back to 1994. You\u2019re not going to hear a vintage message.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But you\u2019ll hear a relevant message to the issues you face today at the <em>Weekend to Remember.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve already heard in this message\u2014you talked about the importance of dad being a manager in the family. But there\u2019s more to it than that as we hear in Part Two of the message.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Not only is Dad the family manager, he is also the family minister\u2014not your pastor, but you! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cLetter \u2018A\u2019: He shepherds his flock.\u201d First Peter 5:2: \u201cShepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion but voluntarily according to the will of God; and not with sordid gain but with eagerness, nor yet as lording it over those allotted you to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint \u2018B\u2019: A good dad ministers to his flock by caring for their needs.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNumber 1: He considers it to be a privilege to care for them.\u201d He does it voluntarily, the Scripture says.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint 2: He makes them a priority.\u201d He does it with all eagerness. His calendar reflects it. He spends time with his kids. And it\u2019s not just the quality of time; it is the quantity of time\u2014it\u2019s both\u2014it\u2019s not either\/or. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of my favorite things to do with our kids\u2014and although, it\u2019s becoming a little bit of a problem\u2014is to take them out on dates. I\u2019ll never forget the first date that I had with Ashley. She was a little over three years\u2019 old\u2014chubby cheeks \/ hair coming out the side with little ribbons. I called her on the phone from the office\u2014I said: \u201cAshley, this is Dad. I would really like to have a hot date with you tonight, Sweetheart.\u201d Well, I heard this little laugh and giggle in her voice\u2014she says: \u201cMommy! Daddy wants to take me out on a date!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara was all prompted\u2014they went back in the bedroom \/ they got [her] all dressed. I pulled up in front of the house, went to the door, [knocking sound] knocked on the door. There\u2019s Barbara\u2014and I said, \u201cYes, ma\u2019am; is your daughter home?\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAshley was around the corner in the dining room there; and she\u2019s laughing, and giggling, and stuff\u2014I mean, it was great! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe comes out, and we hold hands; we walk down the steps of the front porch, out to the car. I walk around the door and opened\u2014we had an old Rambler then that I married into\u2014it was a bench seat. I let her sit right there by the door, closed the door, started driving down the road. We\u2019re talking, and we\u2019re laughing about what we are going to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said: \u201cLet\u2019s go to one of these places where you can just eat what you want to eat. We can just pick and choose.\u201d We go to this restaurant and we get chocolate pie, chocolate milk, and chocolate ice cream. [Laughter] And we laugh about what mom would be saying right now\u2014[Laughter]\u2014if she only <em>knew<\/em> that we were having all this sugar! [Laughter]\u00a0 Then, after that, we went to the movie. It was great! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe crawled all over the seats. It was Bambi. I mean, she ate popcorn\u2014we spilled it\u2014and Cokes. We did it all\u2014we did it right! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, after the flick was over, we were driving home, and there was only the little green light of that Rambler speedometer shining in our faces. I turned to her and I said, \u201cAshley, what was your favorite thing about tonight?\u201d I\u2019ll never forget this, guys. Before she answered, a thousand thoughts raced through my mind\u2014I thought: \u201cWell, let\u2019s see. It\u2019d probably be the chocolate pie she really liked \/ thought that was cool. No;\u201d\u2014I thought\u2014\u201cit\u2019d probably be the popcorn \/ we laughed about that a lot.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd her little arm just reached over and patted me on the shoulder; and she said, \u201cJust being with you, Dad; just being with you.\u201d Guys, I became a pool of butter, right there, sitting. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what she exemplified, gentlemen? She exemplified what all your children really want\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s to be with <em>you<\/em>. They don\u2019t want your <em>stuff<\/em> \/ your things, and titles, and accumulation\u2014never! The relationship?\u2014yes! If your son is nine years, you have nine years left. If he\u2019s twelve, you\u2019ve got six years left; and if you\u2019ve got one that\u2019s sixteen, you\u2019ve got two summers left to begin to impact their lives before you turn them loose to go to college \/ to lose them. What are you going to accomplish in those years you have remaining with those children? What\u2019s your vision? Where are you headed?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNumber 3: He shepherds and leads his family by being a model,\u201d \/ by being an example. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNumber 4: He meets their needs.\u201d He shepherds and cares for them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA good shepherd never moves faster than the sheep can follow, though, guys. Some of you are going to come back from this conference, loaded for bear! You\u2019re going to go back and take your three-year-old and want to teach him the entire pre-marriage training. [Laughter] It will short-circuit the poor little fellow, right there! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWrite these down, guys: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat\u2019s your plan for\u201d\u2014Number 1\u2014\u201csex education?\u201d You got one? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly: \u201cWhat about a fire drill? Do your kids know what to do in an emergency?\u201d What if they walked in and found Mom passed out?\u2014do they know what to do? Have you talked about that with them? Have you <em>trained<\/em> them how to handle a crisis? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat about self-protection?\u201d\u2014when you\u2019re met, after school, by a bully and his friend, like I was? They tried to make me eat a\u2014a dead sparrow. [Laughter] It wasn\u2019t very tasty\u2014they were bigger than I was. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat about de-programming them?\u201d Do you know what words they are hearing at school? Ha-ha! I wish I could take you into our kitchen the other night and let you overhear a story that they had\u2014trying to explain an obscene gesture our kids had seen. Oh, man! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou talk about a great conversation. I bet I turned 54 different shades of red before that baby was over. You know what? It was great, because I had a chance to get the Bible open\u2014and had a chance to talk about some of these things, and I learned some things myself. Interesting!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLook at the 23<sup>rd<\/sup> Psalm, just the first sentence: \u201cThe Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.\u201d Write a question there: \u201cDo my kids want?\u201d Are you shepherding them \/ caring for them? \u201cHelping them lie down in green pastures,\u201d\u2014making that home a security station? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCould I give you a fifth point to add to your outline before we turn the page? \u201cHe tells them he loves them.\u201d Guys, do you take those kids and hug them and run your hands through their hair? I pray every night with our kids. I always put my hands on them, because I think there is something about touching that we need to have lots of in the family today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe last point: \u201cDad is the family model.\u201d I\u2019ll never forget a quote that was given to me, by Albert Einstein, to a group of young scientists in the laboratory one day. These young aspiring scientists were seated there. Einstein pointed his boney finger, pushed his glasses up on his nose, and he says, \u201cGentlemen, try not to become men of success; rather become men of value.\u201d I thought, \u201cWhat a great word for our culture today,\u201d\u2014to impart this to our kids: \u201cSon, I want you to become a man of success\u2014<em>no, no, no, son<\/em>\u2014<em>not<\/em> a man of success\u2014that\u2019s what the world will tell you. But I want you, son\u2014I want you to become a man of value.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, gentlemen, to do that, we\u2019ve got to be a model\u2014\u201cLetter \u2018A\u2019\u201d here says: \u201cDad must model God\u2019s truth in his own life.\u201d You\u2019ve got to ask yourself the question, gentlemen, as I\u2019ve asked myself: \u201cWhere do you want to succeed?\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and a second question: \u201cWhere <em>must<\/em> you succeed?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGentlemen, if you and I do not raise a crop of young men, who know what it means to be men, then who is going to lead our corporations, our factories, our banks, our nation in the future generation? Today, I believe America\u2019s greatest problem is in the family unit; because we are not creating a crop that is whole and total for the next generation. We are creating a bunch that are broken by divorce in the home, and a lack of a model, and kids who don\u2019t know what it means to be a man. When you\u2019ve got the women\u2019s lib movement moving in and redefining what it means to be a woman, what does that do to all the men?\u2014makes them very insecure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo guys our work is cut out for us. You and I\u2019ve got to model for the generation that is coming up what it means to be a man, a husband, and a father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLook at this verse [Psalm 78:72]: \u201cSo he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart.\u201d Guys, I fail. I am sorry to admit, but my humanity is still with me so much. I wish I could strip it away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe other day, Benjamin and I were out on our property. Our house is located on a ridge overlooking a lake\u2014it butts up to some property the city owns \/ it\u2019s a park. The park has no road, just a trail through it. It\u2019s just the boonies\u2014there\u2019s just millions and millions of trees there. Our view of the lake is being taken away by these pines and oaks that are growing up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got right down to the edge of our property line to begin to eliminate a few of these pine trees and oaks that were taking our view away. There was this big oak that was just this far across the property line on the city. I looked at that and I looked at the property line\u2014I said: \u201cYou know, these property lines aren\u2019t that exact anyway out here. We\u2019ll just get our chain saw out, Benjamin; and we\u2019ll take care of that.\u201d [Dennis makes a chain saw sound and a tree falling] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll the time, I\u2019m looking at these little orange markers on these trees, where they mark the property lines\u2014it\u2019s only that far across the line. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I\u2019m out on the porch, reading my Bible. I look down the hill; and there\u2019s that tree down there still, pointed down the hill. I remember Benjamin saying, \u201cIsn\u2019t that on the city property, Dad? [Laughter] \u201cNo; it\u2019s just about that far. I mean, property lines aren\u2019t that exact. I mean, hey, millions of trees\u2014they\u2019ll never miss it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what? I got to where I didn\u2019t even want to go out on our back porch and look at our view; because the Lord, Himself, began to go [honking noise from Dennis]. I looked at that tree and I go: Oh, man! You\u2019ve got to be kidding me. Have I got to go to the city and confess my sin?\u201d [Laughter] The Lord said, \u201cYes!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I call down to City Hall\u2014found out who I had to confess my sin to. I was trying to find some oblique engineer down there who wouldn\u2019t care. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou think the Lord would let me off like that?\u2014never!\u00a0 My sons listened to me on the phone. Finally, I had to call a guy, who\u2019s almost a neighbor\u2014oh, that\u2019s really good to call a neighbor, who works out there. I said: \u201cI cut down a tree and I\u2019m wrong. I want to make restitution.\u201d I tell you guys\u2014that tree is still down, and it is a memorial to my humanity\u2014and it stinks! But you know what? I taught my son through that\u2014I said: \u201cYour dad made a very, very serious error here; but he corrected it.\u201d I tell Benjamin, and Samuel, and my other children: \u201cYou know, your dad may not be perfect, but he really <em>wants<\/em> to do what is right.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat a man is determines what a man does,\u201d\u2014<em>that<\/em> is an awesome statement\u2014the character of the man determines that man. A great statement I heard once: \u201cYou do not build a marble tower out of the mixture of mud and manure,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s exactly right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint 2: A man\u2019s character is shaped by his relationship with God.\u201d There\u2019s where the real hope for me lies, gentlemen\u2014is that God has not given up on me. He really hasn\u2019t; He still loves me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint \u2018B\u2019: Dad must transfer God\u2019s truth down through the generations.\u201d Psalm 78:5-7 talks about a relay\u2014a relay. I used to run relays. There are several ways to lose a relay\u2014slow starts, sloppy handoffs, and running out of line. We did it all when I was in high school\u2014it was a crummy relay team. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what? I want to get out of the blocks, as a man, and start. I may fall and stumble, but I\u2019m going to get back up. If you find me, 20 years from now, you can ask me if I\u2019m still running; because, gentlemen, the marathon is cross country. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not just the guy who finishes at the finish line who makes the impact\u2014it\u2019s the guy who finishes with his torch still burning. I want to run, and I want to\u2014I want to give that torch to my children. I want them to carry it to the next generation; because this next generation is going to have <em>fabulous<\/em>, incredible opportunities for preaching the truth of Jesus Christ. The light always shines brightest in the darkness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNumber 1: Dad must have the Word of God in his own heart.\u201d Gentlemen, our lives may be the doorway through which sin can gain entrance into our family\u2019s life; or it can be a doorway and a window where fresh air of truth can enter our homes and our children and permeate their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLook at \u201cPoint 2: Dad uses daily opportunities to equip his children.\u201d He is diligent: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThese words which I am commanding you today shall be on your heart.\u201d Underline those words: \u201c\u2026shall be on your heart.\u201d It\u2019s like a 50-pound sack of flour\u2014it shall be a burden, gentlemen! \u201cAs the sun comes up every day,\u201d\u2014the Hebrew says here\u2014\u201cit should be on your heart.\u201d You should be burdened by your responsibility to lead, and care, and shepherd, and minister, and model it before your kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou, literally, should be stooped over, guys, by the burden\u2014a little weighted every day to lead your family\u2014\u201c\u2026and you shall teach them\u201d\u2014 because you\u2019re burdened\u2014\u00a0 \u201cdiligently to your sons, and you shall talk of them when you sit, when you walk, when lie down, when you rise up.\u201d In other words, you shall teach as a way of life\u2014you watch a commercial, and it communicates wrong values \/ use that opportunity to say, \u201cHey, what did that just tell us right there?\u201d Some of those commercials are R-rated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got in my to-do pad here\u2014where I keep all my stuff\u2014a sheet of paper that started out being \u201cTwenty-five Things I Am Teaching My Kids.\u201d It is right across the page from my to-do list: \u201cTwenty-five Things I Am Teaching My Children.\u201d It started out being 25 \/ it\u2019s now up to 40\u2014little things like: \u201cBeing faithful in little things,\u201d \u201cBecoming a man of character,\u201d \u201cBecoming a woman who has a gentle and quiet spirit.\u201d It reminds me, gentlemen\u2014as I look at all my stuff on my list, which is always full\u2014of what is going to be important beyond this next day that I face to the future. \u201cWhat top five values are you imparting to your kids?\u201d You got 5?\u201410?\u201415?\u201425?\u2014take your pick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint 3: Dad structures formal teaching times to instruct his children.\u201d [Proverbs 4:1]: \u201cHear, O sons, the instruction of a father, and give attention that you may gain understanding, for I give you sound teaching; do not abandon my instruction.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, in conclusion: \u201cWhat is a successful dad?\u201d Three points to answer that question: \u201cLetter \u2018A\u2019: A successful dad must be gripped with the importance of his responsibility to his family,\u201d\u2014he needs time with his children. Secondly, \u201cPoint \u2018B\u2019: A successful dad must ask God to do a work in his heart,\u201d\u2014he needs a touch from God. And \u201c3: A successful dad must persevere as a leader by conquering fear and failure,\u201d\u2014he needs toughness in his heart. Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb, and yet no one would consider Thomas Edison a failure. We are to learn from our failures, and persevere, and be tough to finish the race. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGentlemen, there\u2019s a great question asked in \u201cPoint D: What kind of legacy will you leave?\u201d You see, gentlemen, I spent a long time trying to come to grips with my doubts; when, suddenly, I recognized that I, Dennis Rainey, had better come to grips with what I believe. I have since moved from the agony of questions that I cannot answer to the reality of answers that I cannot escape, and it is a great relief.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Again, we have been listening to Part Two of a message from a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaway. If you didn\u2019t recognize the speaker\u2019s voice, it\u2019s because it\u2019s 23 years ago that that recording was made, back in 1994. You were speaking at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaway. I know the getaway is all about marriage; but we feel like it\u2019s important, in that context, to say a little bit about being a mom and a dad; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We do. I just want to say to the dad, who\u2019s listening, who doesn\u2019t feel like he\u2019s done his duty. Pick the subject that we\u2019ve talked about here\u2014being a family minister, a family model, the spiritual leader of your family\u2014just make it the focus of a prayer: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod, would You help me, as a helpless parent \/ a helpless dad, assume this responsibility, with excitement, with the privilege of impacting the next generation, and give me wisdom to know how to address the needs of my family? Help me to value my wife\u2014and her opinions and her values, as a mom\u2014and what she thinks is important. Give us unity, as a couple, and help us anticipate the issues that we are about to face in these next seasons of parenting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, I think if a dad will pray an honest prayer\u2014and what dad hasn\u2019t felt those emotions of: \u201cThis is a <em>heavy<\/em> weight. Who can do this thing?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is an <em>amazing<\/em> assignment, both in terms of privilege, but also responsibility. But cry out to God\u2014He\u2019ll meet you in your point of weakness. I think He <em>loves<\/em> the prayer of a helpless parent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And keep sharpening the saw too\u2014I mean, keep growing, as a husband and as a father. Keep seeking ways to remind yourself of what is true and to grow more in your faith and in your assignment. Look for people who can mentor you. But there\u2019s more to it than that as we hear in Part Two of the message.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Not only is Dad the family manager, he is also the family minister\u2014not your pastor, but you! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cLetter \u2018A\u2019: He shepherds his flock.\u201d First Peter 5:2: \u201cShepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion but voluntarily according to the will of God; and not with sordid gain but with eagerness, nor yet as lording it over those allotted you to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint \u2018B\u2019: A good dad ministers to his flock by caring for their needs.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNumber 1: He considers it to be a privilege to care for them.\u201d He does it voluntarily, the Scripture says.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint 2: He makes them a priority.\u201d He does it with all eagerness. His calendar reflects it. He spends time with his kids. And it\u2019s not just the quality of time; it is the quantity of time\u2014it\u2019s both\u2014it\u2019s not either\/or. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of my favorite things to do with our kids\u2014and although, it\u2019s becoming a little bit of a problem\u2014is to take them out on dates. I\u2019ll never forget the first date that I had with Ashley. She was a little over three years\u2019 old\u2014chubby cheeks \/ hair coming out the side with little ribbons. I called her on the phone from the office\u2014I said: \u201cAshley, this is Dad. I would really like to have a hot date with you tonight, Sweetheart.\u201d Well, I heard this little laugh and giggle in her voice\u2014she says: \u201cMommy! Daddy wants to take me out on a date!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara was all prompted\u2014they went back in the bedroom \/ they got [her] all dressed. I pulled up in front of the house, went to the door, [knocking sound] knocked on the door. There\u2019s Barbara\u2014and I said, \u201cYes, ma\u2019am; is your daughter home?\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAshley was around the corner in the dining room there; and she\u2019s laughing, and giggling, and stuff\u2014I mean, it was great! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe comes out, and we hold hands; we walk down the steps of the front porch, out to the car. I walk around the door and opened\u2014we had an old Rambler then that I married into\u2014it was a bench seat. I let her sit right there by the door, closed the door, started driving down the road. We\u2019re talking, and we\u2019re laughing about what we are going to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said: \u201cLet\u2019s go to one of these places where you can just eat what you want to eat. We can just pick and choose.\u201d We go to this restaurant and we get chocolate pie, chocolate milk, and chocolate ice cream. [Laughter] And we laugh about what mom would be saying right now\u2014[Laughter]\u2014if she only <em>knew<\/em> that we were having all this sugar! [Laughter]\u00a0 Then, after that, we went to the movie. It was great! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe crawled all over the seats. It was Bambi. I mean, she ate popcorn\u2014we spilled it\u2014and Cokes. We did it all\u2014we did it right! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, after the flick was over, we were driving home, and there was only the little green light of that Rambler speedometer shining in our faces. I turned to her and I said, \u201cAshley, what was your favorite thing about tonight?\u201d I\u2019ll never forget this, guys. Before she answered, a thousand thoughts raced through my mind\u2014I thought: \u201cWell, let\u2019s see. It\u2019d probably be the chocolate pie she really liked \/ thought that was cool. No;\u201d\u2014I thought\u2014\u201cit\u2019d probably be the popcorn \/ we laughed about that a lot.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd her little arm just reached over and patted me on the shoulder; and she said, \u201cJust being with you, Dad; just being with you.\u201d Guys, I became a pool of butter, right there, sitting. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what she exemplified, gentlemen? She exemplified what all your children really want\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s to be with <em>you<\/em>. They don\u2019t want your <em>stuff<\/em> \/ your things, and titles, and accumulation\u2014never! The relationship?\u2014yes! If your son is nine years, you have nine years left. If he\u2019s twelve, you\u2019ve got six years left; and if you\u2019ve got one that\u2019s sixteen, you\u2019ve got two summers left to begin to impact their lives before you turn them loose to go to college \/ to lose them. What are you going to accomplish in those years you have remaining with those children? What\u2019s your vision? Where are you headed?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNumber 3: He shepherds and leads his family by being a model,\u201d \/ by being an example. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNumber 4: He meets their needs.\u201d He shepherds and cares for them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA good shepherd never moves faster than the sheep can follow, though, guys. Some of you are going to come back from this conference, loaded for bear! You\u2019re going to go back and take your three-year-old and want to teach him the entire pre-marriage training. [Laughter] It will short-circuit the poor little fellow, right there! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWrite these down, guys: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat\u2019s your plan for\u201d\u2014Number 1\u2014\u201csex education?\u201d You got one? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly: \u201cWhat about a fire drill? Do your kids know what to do in an emergency?\u201d What if they walked in and found Mom passed out?\u2014do they know what to do? Have you talked about that with them? Have you <em>trained<\/em> them how to handle a crisis? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat about self-protection?\u201d\u2014when you\u2019re met, after school, by a bully and his friend, like I was? They tried to make me eat a\u2014a dead sparrow. [Laughter] It wasn\u2019t very tasty\u2014they were bigger than I was. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat about de-programming them?\u201d Do you know what words they are hearing at school? Ha-ha! I wish I could take you into our kitchen the other night and let you overhear a story that they had\u2014trying to explain an obscene gesture our kids had seen. Oh, man! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou talk about a great conversation. I bet I turned 54 different shades of red before that baby was over. You know what? It was great, because I had a chance to get the Bible open\u2014and had a chance to talk about some of these things, and I learned some things myself. Interesting!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLook at the 23<sup>rd<\/sup> Psalm, just the first sentence: \u201cThe Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.\u201d Write a question there: \u201cDo my kids want?\u201d Are you shepherding them \/ caring for them? \u201cHelping them lie down in green pastures,\u201d\u2014making that home a security station? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCould I give you a fifth point to add to your outline before we turn the page? \u201cHe tells them he loves them.\u201d Guys, do you take those kids and hug them and run your hands through their hair? I pray every night with our kids. I always put my hands on them, because I think there is something about touching that we need to have lots of in the family today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe last point: \u201cDad is the family model.\u201d I\u2019ll never forget a quote that was given to me, by Albert Einstein, to a group of young scientists in the laboratory one day. These young aspiring scientists were seated there. Einstein pointed his boney finger, pushed his glasses up on his nose, and he says, \u201cGentlemen, try not to become men of success; rather become men of value.\u201d I thought, \u201cWhat a great word for our culture today,\u201d\u2014to impart this to our kids: \u201cSon, I want you to become a man of success\u2014<em>no, no, no, son<\/em>\u2014<em>not<\/em> a man of success\u2014that\u2019s what the world will tell you. But I want you, son\u2014I want you to become a man of value.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, gentlemen, to do that, we\u2019ve got to be a model\u2014\u201cLetter \u2018A\u2019\u201d here says: \u201cDad must model God\u2019s truth in his own life.\u201d You\u2019ve got to ask yourself the question, gentlemen, as I\u2019ve asked myself: \u201cWhere do you want to succeed?\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and a second question: \u201cWhere <em>must<\/em> you succeed?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGentlemen, if you and I do not raise a crop of young men, who know what it means to be men, then who is going to lead our corporations, our factories, our banks, our nation in the future generation? Today, I believe America\u2019s greatest problem is in the family unit; because we are not creating a crop that is whole and total for the next generation. We are creating a bunch that are broken by divorce in the home, and a lack of a model, and kids who don\u2019t know what it means to be a man. When you\u2019ve got the women\u2019s lib movement moving in and redefining what it means to be a woman, what does that do to all the men?\u2014makes them very insecure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo guys our work is cut out for us. You and I\u2019ve got to model for the generation that is coming up what it means to be a man, a husband, and a father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLook at this verse [Psalm 78:72]: \u201cSo he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart.\u201d Guys, I fail. I am sorry to admit, but my humanity is still with me so much. I wish I could strip it away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe other day, Benjamin and I were out on our property. Our house is located on a ridge overlooking a lake\u2014it butts up to some property the city owns \/ it\u2019s a park. The park has no road, just a trail through it. It\u2019s just the boonies\u2014there\u2019s just millions and millions of trees there. Our view of the lake is being taken away by these pines and oaks that are growing up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got right down to the edge of our property line to begin to eliminate a few of these pine trees and oaks that were taking our view away. There was this big oak that was just this far across the property line on the city. I looked at that and I looked at the property line\u2014I said: \u201cYou know, these property lines aren\u2019t that exact anyway out here. We\u2019ll just get our chain saw out, Benjamin; and we\u2019ll take care of that.\u201d [Dennis makes a chain saw sound and a tree falling] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll the time, I\u2019m looking at these little orange markers on these trees, where they mark the property lines\u2014it\u2019s only that far across the line. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I\u2019m out on the porch, reading my Bible. I look down the hill; and there\u2019s that tree down there still, pointed down the hill. I remember Benjamin saying, \u201cIsn\u2019t that on the city property, Dad? [Laughter] \u201cNo; it\u2019s just about that far. I mean, property lines aren\u2019t that exact. I mean, hey, millions of trees\u2014they\u2019ll never miss it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what? I got to where I didn\u2019t even want to go out on our back porch and look at our view; because the Lord, Himself, began to go [honking noise from Dennis]. I looked at that tree and I go: Oh, man! You\u2019ve got to be kidding me. Have I got to go to the city and confess my sin?\u201d [Laughter] The Lord said, \u201cYes!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I call down to City Hall\u2014found out who I had to confess my sin to. I was trying to find some oblique engineer down there who wouldn\u2019t care. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou think the Lord would let me off like that?\u2014never!\u00a0 My sons listened to me on the phone. Finally, I had to call a guy, who\u2019s almost a neighbor\u2014oh, that\u2019s really good to call a neighbor, who works out there. I said: \u201cI cut down a tree and I\u2019m wrong. I want to make restitution.\u201d I tell you guys\u2014that tree is still down, and it is a memorial to my humanity\u2014and it stinks! But you know what? I taught my son through that\u2014I said: \u201cYour dad made a very, very serious error here; but he corrected it.\u201d I tell Benjamin, and Samuel, and my other children: \u201cYou know, your dad may not be perfect, but he really <em>wants<\/em> to do what is right.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat a man is determines what a man does,\u201d\u2014<em>that<\/em> is an awesome statement\u2014the character of the man determines that man. A great statement I heard once: \u201cYou do not build a marble tower out of the mixture of mud and manure,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s exactly right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint 2: A man\u2019s character is shaped by his relationship with God.\u201d There\u2019s where the real hope for me lies, gentlemen\u2014is that God has not given up on me. He really hasn\u2019t; He still loves me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint \u2018B\u2019: Dad must transfer God\u2019s truth down through the generations.\u201d Psalm 78:5-7 talks about a relay\u2014a relay. I used to run relays. There are several ways to lose a relay\u2014slow starts, sloppy handoffs, and running out of line. We did it all when I was in high school\u2014it was a crummy relay team. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what? I want to get out of the blocks, as a man, and start. I may fall and stumble, but I\u2019m going to get back up. If you find me, 20 years from now, you can ask me if I\u2019m still running; because, gentlemen, the marathon is cross country. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not just the guy who finishes at the finish line who makes the impact\u2014it\u2019s the guy who finishes with his torch still burning. I want to run, and I want to\u2014I want to give that torch to my children. I want them to carry it to the next generation; because this next generation is going to have <em>fabulous<\/em>, incredible opportunities for preaching the truth of Jesus Christ. The light always shines brightest in the darkness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNumber 1: Dad must have the Word of God in his own heart.\u201d Gentlemen, our lives may be the doorway through which sin can gain entrance into our family\u2019s life; or it can be a doorway and a window where fresh air of truth can enter our homes and our children and permeate their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLook at \u201cPoint 2: Dad uses daily opportunities to equip his children.\u201d He is diligent: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThese words which I am commanding you today shall be on your heart.\u201d Underline those words: \u201c\u2026shall be on your heart.\u201d It\u2019s like a 50-pound sack of flour\u2014it shall be a burden, gentlemen! \u201cAs the sun comes up every day,\u201d\u2014the Hebrew says here\u2014\u201cit should be on your heart.\u201d You should be burdened by your responsibility to lead, and care, and shepherd, and minister, and model it before your kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou, literally, should be stooped over, guys, by the burden\u2014a little weighted every day to lead your family\u2014\u201c\u2026and you shall teach them\u201d\u2014 because you\u2019re burdened\u2014\u00a0 \u201cdiligently to your sons, and you shall talk of them when you sit, when you walk, when lie down, when you rise up.\u201d In other words, you shall teach as a way of life\u2014you watch a commercial, and it communicates wrong values \/ use that opportunity to say, \u201cHey, what did that just tell us right there?\u201d Some of those commercials are R-rated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got in my to-do pad here\u2014where I keep all my stuff\u2014a sheet of paper that started out being \u201cTwenty-five Things I Am Teaching My Kids.\u201d It is right across the page from my to-do list: \u201cTwenty-five Things I Am Teaching My Children.\u201d It started out being 25 \/ it\u2019s now up to 40\u2014little things like: \u201cBeing faithful in little things,\u201d \u201cBecoming a man of character,\u201d \u201cBecoming a woman who has a gentle and quiet spirit.\u201d It reminds me, gentlemen\u2014as I look at all my stuff on my list, which is always full\u2014of what is going to be important beyond this next day that I face to the future. \u201cWhat top five values are you imparting to your kids?\u201d You got 5?\u201410?\u201415?\u201425?\u2014take your pick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint 3: Dad structures formal teaching times to instruct his children.\u201d [Proverbs 4:1]: \u201cHear, O sons, the instruction of a father, and give attention that you may gain understanding, for I give you sound teaching; do not abandon my instruction.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, in conclusion: \u201cWhat is a successful dad?\u201d Three points to answer that question: \u201cLetter \u2018A\u2019: A successful dad must be gripped with the importance of his responsibility to his family,\u201d\u2014he needs time with his children. Secondly, \u201cPoint \u2018B\u2019: A successful dad must ask God to do a work in his heart,\u201d\u2014he needs a touch from God. And \u201c3: A successful dad must persevere as a leader by conquering fear and failure,\u201d\u2014he needs toughness in his heart. Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb, and yet no one would consider Thomas Edison a failure. We are to learn from our failures, and persevere, and be tough to finish the race. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGentlemen, there\u2019s a great question asked in \u201cPoint D: What kind of legacy will you leave?\u201d You see, gentlemen, I spent a long time trying to come to grips with my doubts; when, suddenly, I recognized that I, Dennis Rainey, had better come to grips with what I believe. I have since moved from the agony of questions that I cannot answer to the reality of answers that I cannot escape, and it is a great relief.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Again, we have been listening to Part Two of a message from a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaway. If you didn\u2019t recognize the speaker\u2019s voice, it\u2019s because it\u2019s 23 years ago that that recording was made, back in 1994. You were speaking at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaway. I know the getaway is all about marriage; but we feel like it\u2019s important, in that context, to say a little bit about being a mom and a dad; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We do. I just want to say to the dad, who\u2019s listening, who doesn\u2019t feel like he\u2019s done his duty. Pick the subject that we\u2019ve talked about here\u2014being a family minister, a family model, the spiritual leader of your family\u2014just make it the focus of a prayer: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod, would You help me, as a helpless parent \/ a helpless dad, assume this responsibility, with excitement, with the privilege of impacting the next generation, and give me wisdom to know how to address the needs of my family? Help me to value my wife\u2014and her opinions and her values, as a mom\u2014and what she thinks is important. Give us unity, as a couple, and help us anticipate the issues that we are about to face in these next seasons of parenting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, I think if a dad will pray an honest prayer\u2014and what dad hasn\u2019t felt those emotions of: \u201cThis is a <em>heavy<\/em> weight. Who can do this thing?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is an <em>amazing<\/em> assignment, both in terms of privilege, but also responsibility. But cry out to God\u2014He\u2019ll meet you in your point of weakness. I think He <em>loves<\/em> the prayer of a helpless parent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And keep sharpening the saw too\u2014I mean, keep growing, as a husband and as a father. Keep seeking ways to remind yourself of what is true and to grow more in your faith and in your assignment. Look for people who can mentor you.
